MILTON, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman contacted police Jan. 29 after she discovered more than $78,000 worth of fraudulent checks had been written in her name while she was out of state.

The woman said she had visited California between Jan. 7-27. When she returned on Jan. 28, she found several letters notifying her of insufficient or invalid checks that had

Man loses thousands to online scammer MILTON, Ga. — An Alpharetta man reported Jan. 28 that he had been scammed out of $2,500 by someone claiming to represent Microsoft.

The man told police he had received a call requesting him to pay for his Amazon prime subscription. He was given an email to use to pay the fee.

When the man input the email address, his computer gave him multiple alerts to call Microsoft, because the device had been hacked. The man called the number and, during a conversation with a person on the line, was instructed to send $2,500 worth of eBay cards.

After the man provided his bank account information and the gift card numbers, he realized he had been scammed and contacted police.

Woman’s wallet stolen during shopping trip MILTON, Ga. — Police are investigating the Jan. 24 theft of a woman’s wallet while she was shopping at the Walmart on Windward Parkway.

The woman said she arrived at the store at 10 a.m. and placed her pocketbook, with her wallet, on a shopping

Police advised the woman to contact the credit bureaus to place a fraud alert and freeze her credit.

Thief takes electronics from parked vehicle MILTON, Ga. — An Alpharetta man contacted police Jan. 25 after he noticed that his car had been burglarized.

The man said he had parked it the previous evening at his house on Morris Road. The next morning, he noticed the car had been rummaged through and several items were missing.

The stolen items, most electronics such as a GoPro and an external hard drive, are valued at over $1,600 total.

The man said it was possible he had accidentally left the car unlocked because he could not find signs of forced entry.

Woman’s phone stolen from store shopping cart MILTON, Ga. — Police are investigating the Jan. 25 theft of a woman’s phone from the Walmart on Windward Parkway.

The woman said she had visited the store between 8:30-9 a.m. that day. After she finished her shopping, she realized she had accidentally left her phone in her shopping cart.

Drug arrests Daniel Manuel Leon, 23, of Deer Trail, Milton, was arrested Jan. 25 on Windward Parkway in Milton for possession of schedule I drugs and shoplifting. her shopping cart, which was being used by a man who claimed he had not seen the phone.

The woman went to speak to the manager, and when she returned, she found a note she had placed in her phone’s case left on the shopping cart without the phone.

Parked car burglarized during church visit ROSWELL, Ga. — Police are investigating a Jan. 21 car burglary at Cross of Life Lutheran Church on Hembree Road.

The car owner said he had parked the car around noon. When he returned about 20 minutes later, the man saw that his front driver-side window was shattered. The man’s backpack, which had been stored on the passenger-side floorboard, was gone.

The backpack had contained several identifying documents, $100 in cash and a notebook that contained all of his bank account ID’s and passwords.

Police later received a call about a suspicious backpack on Elkins Road and confirmed that it belonged to the man. He said only the cash was missing from it.

Lockwood gives picture of Milton’s year ahead

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The state of Milton is “strong,” and 2020 is poised to be another year of growth and progress for the city. That was the message from Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood at the city’s annual State of the City address Jan. 30 at City Hall.

Lockwood and the heads of each of the city’s departments outlined the city’s 2019 accomplishments and looked ahead to what residents can expect to see this year.

“It’s been an honor to serve this community for the past 13 years along with our council members, our staff, and most importantly, you guys, our citizens,” Lockwood said. “I’ve seen how much we’ve grown since our incorporation, and I’m pleased to say the state of our city is strong. We aren’t just growing in numbers. In just our 13th year as a city, we are growing as a community and growing into our own.”

Lockwood said the city is continuing to create a sense of place, and positive steps were taken in 2019 to move forward, including breaking ground on the city’s new public safety complex. The 40,000-square foot facility, located on

3.5-acres along Cambridge High School Road, will house the city’s court, police headquarters and Fire Station 44. The station will be the first in Milton to be built by the city, and Lockwood assured the audience it “won’t be the last.”

The mayor also outlined three initiatives the city will undertake in 2020 to uphold its character.

“We know that our rural heritage and beautiful scenery sets Milton apart, and we need to protect this proud, unique identity,” Lockwood said.

Milton is currently in the initial stages of drafting an equestrian/agricultural zoning district that Lockwood said will create regulations to preserve and incentivize those uses.

“The horse on our city logo means a lot to us, that’s why it’s critical for us to preserve that heritage,” he said.

The city continued to use Greenspace Bond dollars to preserve land in 2019, and Lockwood said Milton will add to the 390 acres it has safeguarded from development this year.

Milton is also set to finalize its revised tree ordinance.

Community Development Director Parag Agrawal said seven projects are currently in the works in Crabapple that will create a “lively downtown” in the

near future. His department will also focus on creating more walkability around the city, he said.

Public Works Director Robert Drewry outlined some of the city’s transportation projects, including the Charlotte Drive extension in downtown Crabapple set to be completed in late March or early April.

“We are confident that this improvement will help reduce the traffic in the downtown Crabapple area,” Drewry said.

Economic Development Director Sarah LaDart outlined new initiatives to boost the business climate the city undertook in 2019, including Corridor Conversations and Meet Me in Milton.

She also announced the formation of the Milton Business Council which aims to promote the city’s businesses under the banner of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

LaDart also charted changes to the city’s alcohol ordinances that could pave the way for additional business opportunities in Milton if approved.

Parks and Recreation Director Jim Cregge said 2019 was a year in which Milton could invest in its own parks, a new direction after its parks-sharing agreement with Alpharetta ended. The city has recently added new programs,

constructed a lacrosse wall at Bell Memorial Park and finalized the purchase of the former United Sports Complex on Cox Road “2020 can be our best year yet,” Cregge said. “We are grateful and excited for what is to come.”

Finance Director Bernadette Harvill said the city was honored twice last year for sound financial reporting, and City Clerk Susie Gordon said the city’s new public records system will streamline the open records process and soon go live.

Human Resources Director Sam Trager summarized new health initiatives for city staff and reported that over 25 city employees were hired in 2019, including three department heads.

Community Outreach Manager Courtney Spriggs told the audience about the city’s new comprehensive internship program, and Court of Clerk Brooke Lappin explained how Milton’s new e-court system will streamline and enhance the city’s court.

Police Chief Rich Austin and Fire Chief Robert Edgar each heralded the city’s new public works complex, with Austin calling it a symbol of Milton Police’s progress.

Annual homeless count highlights challenges of addressing poverty 2019 Point in Time Homelessness Findings

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY — Volunteers took to streets and shelters Jan. 23 to get a clearer picture of Fulton County’s homeless population.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires that local governments conduct this Point in Time count each year. The count provides communities with an understanding of the demographics of its homeless population — age, race, veteran status or history of mental illness — and determines how federal funds will be allocated.

“The purpose of it is to try to get as much data as possible around the issue of homelessness,” Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis said. “What does the homeless population look like? Is it families, children, adults, male, female?

So we can try to figure out the best ways to approach the challenges of homelessness as a community.”

The rate of homelessness in Fulton County dropped significantly between 2010 and 2018 but remained far higher than similarly sized communities, according to a county report. Fulton County is paradoxically one of the wealthiest in the nation, but it also ranks high in

“Those organizations have done a good job working together to try to meet the needs that emerge from within the North Fulton footprint,” Ellis said. “I don’t think that the best solutions are going to come from a government entity attempting to work on its own. I think that’s it’s going to be something that’s in partnership with many organizations.”

Ellis said by volunteering for the count over the past few years, he’s gained a better understanding of the unique challenges of suburban homelessness.

“In North Fulton and suburban settings in general, the look and feel of it has trended to be families and older individuals, who often times have jobs yet find themselves in stretches of temporary homelessness,” Ellis said.

These individuals often are living out of a car and finding a public bathroom to clean up each day, which may be because there are not as many options for shelters in the suburbs, Ellis said.

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY — The Georgia Department of Transportation is wrapping up a series of public meetings for input on its plans to bring 18 miles of express lanes to the top end of I-285.

The project, originally estimated at $5 billion, would build barrier-separated express lanes in each direction along I-285 from Paces Ferry Road on the west to Henderson Road on the east, with connections to I-75, Ga. 400 and I-85.

Express lanes would also be built on Ga. 400 from south of Glenridge Connector to the North Springs MARTA Station.

GDOT held a series of public information meetings in January and will accept feedback online at majormobilityga.com/ projects/topend/ until Tuesday, Feb. 25.

GDOT says the express lanes will reduce commuter delay by more than 6,000 hours each day and provide more reliable trip times. GDOT officials point to the success of its existing express lanes on I-85 and I-75.

In its first year, the Northwest Corridor in Cobb County saw its rush hour period decrease by one hour in the morning and evening, according to GDOT reports. Travel times are 20 percent faster for the 27,000 trips in the express lanes each day. Drivers in the traditional lanes see a benefit too, with travel speeds up to 20 miles per hour faster than before the express lanes.

The impact of the I-285 express lanes could be even greater because they’ll run both ways, GDOT Communications Director Scott Higley said.

Preparing for population growth The express lanes are needed not only to relieve existing traffic but to prepare for the region’s future, Higley said.

The metro area’s population is expected to grow by 2.4 million over the next 20 years, according to estimates from the Atlanta Regional Commission.

“If we build more lanes, they just fill up,” Higley said. “We’ve done that for decades. and you just end up with a wider traffic jam.”

By setting pricing based on demand and allowing bus riders and approved vanpools to use the express lanes for free, the project will encourage people to think differently about their commute, he said.

This enthusiasm for the project is not shared by all. A Change.org petition opposing the project has garnered 1,400 signatures, including Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch and City Council members John Heneghan, Pam Tallmadge and Tom Lambert.

“I would like to see the whole 285 Managed Lane Project reevaluated for effectiveness and value added,” Deutsch said in a recent statement. “I believe that there are better strategies to reduce traffic congestion on the Top End. There is a huge need to mitigate the impacts this project is going to have on the communities abutting the interstate.”

Residents near the project have raised concerns about noise, air pollution and property taxes. Dunwoody’s Georgetown community, just north of the highway, could be heavily impacted.

In response to concerns, GDOT has promised to evaluate noise barriers as part of the project. As the environmental field work and roadway design moves forward, nearby property owners and renters will be notified of the opportunity to participate in noise barrier discussions.

Higley also emphasized GDOT only exercises eminent domain after exhausting all other remedies to settle with property owners.

Another common criticism of the express lane project comes from those who would rather see the money go to public transit or would like to see the designs incorporate bus rapid transit (BRT).

Higley noted GDOT’s hands are somewhat tied by the state constitution, which does not permit gas tax revenue to be spent on transit, and that the express lanes will benefit transit riders, as buses will enjoy the benefits of faster travel times.

State Sen. Sally Harrel, speaking before the Dunwoody Homeowners Association on Jan. 26, said she was unhappy with the express lane project and would be looking into a constitutional amendment to unlock transit funding.

“The more I see it, the more I don’t like it,” Harrel said. “Granted, we have got to do something. The reason we’re going with toll lanes is because … by the Georgia Constitution, GDOT cannot spend money on transit, so I will be filing a bill for a constitutional amendment to change that, because I believe our Georgia Constitution is holding us back.”

Harrell acknowledged it probably will not happen this year but said it was time to start the conversation.

Milton Police’s longtime K9 Kyro retires

MILTON, Ga. — A faithful member and ambassador for Milton Police is set to enjoy a relaxing retirement. Kyro, a K9 unit with the department, has retired after serving the city since 2014.

While Kyro is still relatively healthy, he is suffering from hip problems, a common issue in German Shepherds. The department said it was in the best interest of Kyro’s health that he retire from his work with the department and the associated ongoing training involved with his duties.

Kyro will continue his relationship with handler Joshua Reece, a former Milton officer who served in the city for five years before recently leaving the department to serve as a deputy with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Reece said Kyro is adapting well to life at home and continuing to be a part of the family. He describes the 8-year old as full of energy and always wanting to do something. He is also thankful his partner will continue to be by his side.

“You could call him my best friend,” Reece said. “It was a privilege to work with him for three years.”

Kyro served as narcotics and tracking dog and had further training in apprehension. Trrained in Germany, his handlers continued to use commands in German to avoid confusion while officers spoke with others.

His day-to-day duties included situations where narcotics are possibly involved, when a suspect needed to be tracked, assisting in searches for missing persons and participating in educational programs around the city.

Milton Capt. Charles Barstow said Kyro successfully tracked several suspects who fled, was instrumental in narcotics cases and the seizure of illegal drugs, and he located people who were in danger after wandering away from a safe location.

He was also perhaps the department’s most beloved member.

“I can’t think of a better ambassador for the department than Kyro,” Barstow said. “He is well known and liked throughout the city. No matter where he went, people loved to see and interact with him and officer Reece. Kyro has been an integral and welcome member of [Milton Police] since his arrival. To be able to work with such a motivated, well-adjusted, and outgoing member of the department has been a joy for both officers and citizens alike. He is leaving behind big ‘paw prints’ for any potential replacement to fill.”

Kyro was Milton Police’s only K9, and Barstow said the city is considering acquiring another K9 and what its day-to-day duties may entail.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — McKenzie Kurtz has seen her Broadway aspirations come to fruition with the Milton High School graduate cast as Anna in the Tony-nominated adaptation of wildly popular 2013 Disney film “Frozen.”

Kurtz will make her Broadway debut Feb. 18 at the St. James Theatre.

“I still can’t even believe it,” Kurtz said. “I sometimes will just start smiling when I remember, it’s so insane to me.”

Kurtz said she has aspired to reach Broadway since she began singing, dancing and acting at 8-years old, and she is ecstatic for her opportunity.

“It’s always been the hope, but to have it come this soon and to have it be this role I’m excited about in this show I adore, it’s a dream come true,” she said.

While reaching Broadway is a feat in itself, playing a beloved character with worldwide recognition adds to the experience for Kurtz.

“People are so clearly in love with this story, and I fell it love with it when I first

saw the movie,” she said. “To be able to play this character that is so iconic among families and people in our current day is so incredible. I love this part, I think Anna believes in love so much, and she is a strong young woman. She goes on a journey, and I’m excited to be able to do that every night.”

With Kurtz set to make her debut on Broadway, her time with the Milton Theatre Company and its influence on the actress has not been lost.

“I truly believe it shaped everything and made me into the performer and person I am today,” she said. “I’m so grateful for the time I had in high school and the teachers I worked with, including Renee Denney, Larry Smith, Sim Jones, Chris Shumick and Drew Bowers.

I learned so much from them and all the other people in the department. It was an amazing environment to learn my craft.”

Kurtz also thanked her family for playing such a huge role in her success.

“They were always incredibly supportive, and I owe everything to them,” she said.

Kurtz received significant recognitions in her time with Milton Theatre.

She racked up several Shuler Awards, which honor the state’s top high school performers and productions. Kurtz was named Best Leading Actress for Milton’s 2014-15 production of “Mary Poppins” and Best Leading Actress for 2012-13 for the company’s “Spamalot” production.

She was also nominated for Best Leading Actress in 2011-12 and 2013-14.

Kurtz recently graduated from the University of Michigan and performed in several of the school’s productions.

She also performed in several productions at the Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw, Ind., including as Abigail Wil-

lector lanes between Chamblee Dunwoody Road and Ashford Dunwoody Road, changes to the interchange of I-285 and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and extending the auxiliary lane between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive.

These projects would be completed between 2021 and 2024 and lay the groundwork for the express lanes. The east segment of the express lanes, from Ga. 400 to south of I-85, is slated to go to construction in 2023 and open to traffic in 2028. The west half would begin construction in 2026 and open in 2032, according to the latest timeline.

Current plans place two lanes in both directions between I-75 and I-85 with single lanes on either end. GDOT is in the process of determining where the access points will be located along the route.

The $11 billion Major Mobility Investment Program, which includes the I-285 Top End Express Lanes, is a separate project from Transform 285/400. The Transform project is focused on the interchange at I-285 and Ga. 400, including new flyover ramps, new collector lanes, bridge reconstructions and a new diverging diamond interchange at Abernathy Road.

Local therapist begins online venture to help persons with autism

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The diagnosis of autism for a child can be the start of a challenging and expensive journey, and some families may struggle to find even basic help and resources. The new online service Special Needs Ally, created by local therapist Jennifer Zimmerman, could help provide an answer.

Zimmerman, who specializes in behavioral analysis and autism, noticed the need after moving to Georgia in 2004. She regularly sees about 25 children a week in her private practice and found herself unable to take on more clients, despite the demand for her work.

“There are so many kids that need help, but I felt like I couldn’t reach them all,” Zimmerman said. “And then this idea was born.”

The recently launched Special Needs Ally is an online subscription service with resources, videos and blog entries for children with autism. It also connects families with one another to create a community of support.

But one of the most unique aspects of the site, according to Zimmerman, is that she has carved out two timeslots during the week — one in the afternoon and one in the evening — to livechat with subscribers. People can connect with her regardless of whether they live in rural Georgia or in Alaska with little to no access to therapy.

COMMUNITY “It’s so that nobody is left out in the cold,” Zimmerman said. “I see that all the time that families can’t afford therapy, or they might not know who to go to… People can come to me with their unique situations, and they get a therapist that can talk to them for a fraction of the price they would be paying if I was coming into their home.”

Zimmerman regularly helps parents of children with autism find what schools or programs the child should enroll in and for how long to reap maximum benefits. Such attention can help children at a more individual level, as many schools may offer what is most financially feasible instead of what is best for the child, Zimmerman said.

“This particular child with autism may really need some applied behavior analysis, but this particular child over here may really need to be in a typical playschool setting with some support,” she said. “It’s easy for me to see that with my experience, but its challenging for families to know what is really best.”

Zimmerman advocates on behalf of a little-known Georgia law called Ava’s Law, which she said entitles children with an autism diagnosis to some applied behavior analysis therapy at little to no cost through their insurance.

“Families don’t even know what that is and how it looks and do they really need this much therapy,” Zimmerman said. “We serve as a guide to help them.”

That help will hopefully grow through Special Needs Ally, she said.

“I just really get excited about helping kids and their families,” Zimmerman said. “I’m very passionate about making sure that everybody can get the most of life and their time together and helping these kids get the tools for success now and for later on.”

“They’re working, they’re sending their kids to school, but for a variety of reasons — whether its loss of job, break up of marriage, a health issue — they’ve found themselves in a temporary state of homelessness,” Ellis said.

Though families experiencing temporary homelessness is more common in the suburbs, Ellis said he also sees examples of chronic homelessness, usually related to a chronic mental illness or substance abuse.

“Homelessness is a complex topic,” Ellis said. “People find themselves in situations of homelessness for many different reasons. There’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all solution to eliminate homelessness.”

This year, Fulton County will take the first step on a project that could address chronic homelessness in a big way, Ellis said.

“One thing we have lacked as a county is a place outside our jail setting for a person with mental health challenges that are manifesting in behavior that is lawbreaking or highly disruptive,” Ellis said. “If they wind up in a jail setting, many times it just causes the problem to get worse. While we’re trying to deliver behavioral health services within that setting, it’s not what it’s designed for.”

As part of the 2020 budget, the county will spend $275,000 on a behavioral health comprehensive plan, which will include a feasibility study for constructing a crisis stabilization center. The goal of crisis centers is to provide emergency support for individuals experiencing mental illness or substance abuse and divert them from incarceration.

Ellis, who represents Milton, Mountain Park, and large portions of Roswell, Alpharetta and Sandy Springs, recently announced his intention to seek re-election for the District 2 County Commission seat.

Summit Hill students share gratitude by constructing ‘Kindness Tunnel’

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Summit Hill Elementary students created quite the cheerful scene last Wednesday decorating the school’s hallways to share their appreciation to city officials, volunteers and first responders. The city representatives walked through the “Kindness Tunnel” while students cheered and thanked them for their service with encouraging signs, banners and high-fives aplenty.

The Kindness Tunnel was a new addition to the school’s Kindness Week and the international initiative, The Great Kindness Challenge.

All last week, students were inspired to be nice to those around them, including marking off items on a kindness checklist that included acts such as smiling at 25 people or helping a friend up who had fallen. The school also formed a “compliment crew” to greet students, and teachers met students with signs saying “You matter” or “Have a great day.”

The initiative was spearheaded by Summit Hill counselor Ruth Bowen, who has been with the school for seven years.

“We encourage our kids to be kind all year long, but Kindness Week is a special time to celebrate truly being kind to other people and to go above to see the impact kindness has in our world,” Bowen said.

The impact was evident for both students, school staff and city representatives on Wednesday at the Kindness Tunnel.

“The students cheered, said thank you and waved their signs, and I think it

was a really neat experience for everybody involved, the students, the guests and even our teachers and employees to see the impact our students’ kindness on the guests that came,” Bowen said. “I had parents say their kids came home talking about it or talking about it before school, and they were so excited about the police officers taking selfies with them, all the high-fives they got or that the city mayor was here.”

Milton city staff and first responders were reveling in the moment as well, Bowen said.

“They were very appreciative, and I think they were blown away by the number of people who came to participate in the tunnel and the excitement the children had on their faces to be able to say thank you,” she said.

The tunnel ended in the school’s cafeteria where students showered guests with thank you cards and shared breakfast.

“Kindness is such an important trait to have,” Bowen said. “Academics are important, too, and we care about academics, but teaching kindness is an invaluable lesson for these future leaders.”

And the students seemed to heed the message.

“Teachers were sending me emails all week long on the kind things their students were doing above and beyond what was on the checklist,” Bowen said.

“It was really heartwarming to see them take that to heart and really going out of their way, not just to complete the checklist, but to find other ways to be kind to the other kids in their class or the other people in the school.”

Maybe it’s trying a new recipe with the grandkids.

Maybe it’s catching up with a friend.

Maybe it’s the aroma of freshly baked bread.

Milton Business Council forms under regional chamber banner

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton Business Alliance is steering a new course under new leadership.

The group announced this month it will join forces with the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce to create the Milton Business Council.

The new entity falls under the umbrella of the GNFCC and will be managed by business leaders within the city.

The move to connect the two groups began last year when the Milton Business Alliance, which began as a volunteer organization in 2009, realized about half its members were also associated with the GNFCC. Leaders with the group decided the Milton Business Alliance could have a farther reach and could better support the city’s business community with the merger.

“I am extremely excited to work with Milton business owners and Milton city leaders to form a business council that creates real value for its members,” GNFCC President Kali Boatright said. “I am also humbled that MBA leadership is willing to put their 10-year history of good work into our trust. We are committed to the success of the Milton Business Council as we move into the new decade.”

John Herbert of Herbert Legal Group will serve as the first chairman of the Milton Business Council. Herbert, who has been a member of both organizations, said the Milton Business Alliance has done well over the last 10 years in its mission of promoting Milton businesses. He said he thinks the group can

“As a volunteer organization, we felt like [the MBA] had hit a turning point, and we took it as far as we could take it,” Herbert said. “We got to 100 members last year, and we felt like it needed an injection of a structured organization and key leadership, and that’s the opportunity we saw with the chamber. We thought it would be a great fit with our cheerleading [Milton businesses] and our

message, and the ability to amplify what we are able to do.”

Sharon Mays, chair of the former Milton Business Alliance, shared that sentiment.

“We believe the partnership with the GNFCC and the valuable leadership it provides will enable the Milton business community to move to the next level, offering our members more support and services,” Mays said.

The merger will allow Milton business

owners the opportunity to promote their companies across all of North Fulton County versus the limited confines of the city’s borders.

“What we are able to do through the chamber is provide a spotlight through the GNFCC on Milton and its businesses,” Herbert said. “We can use the GNFCC megaphone to talk about what’s going on in Milton.

Compared to the other larger cities under GNFCC’s umbrella — Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, Sandy Springs — Milton is unique in that only about 15 percent of the city is zoned commercial, and those areas are divided into three districts: Downtown Crabapple, Birmingham Crossroads and Deerfield Parkway. The Milton Business Council becomes the first group under the Greater North Fulton Chamber banner that will focus on a specific municipality. Herbert said the council is determined to show the parent organization that it is successful.

Still in its infancy, the council has already fostered a connection with the city, Herbert said.

“The city has been great supporters of ours,” he said, adding that both business organizations have close ties to the city.

“To me, it’s what will make this new organization work,” Herbert said.

As the business community grows in Milton, Herbert said he is looking forward to what the future holds for the council.

“We feel like the involvement of the Chamber and the concentrated base in the city of Milton is going to create a receptacle big enough to handle and enhance the growth of Milton businesses in the next 10 or 20 years,” he said.

“All three of my children are ELP graduates from 2017-2019. As high school juniors facing college decisions, ELP helped expand their understanding of our North Fulton community and its structure which helped guide their career interests. The contacts made with fellow students, parents and community leaders have already proven beneficial for each of them.”

Emerging Leaders (ELP) is a yearlong high school program for students who wish to develop leadership skills, identify and address community issues and interact with local leaders. Students will enjoy a combination of interactive lectures, discussions, site visits, community service, and networking opportunities.

Alpharetta continues to feed on its own success The sun came up today. Politicians are fighting. And Alpharetta is getting a new $50 million project.

Right on the heels of completion of its City-Center, and within months Geoff smith of completion of Assurance Financial, Avalon’s new ofgsmith@lendtheway.com fice tower, Greenstone Properties announced plans to start construction on a new six-story, 128,000-square-foot office building estimated at $50 million. The building will be on their property on the southwestern corner of Old Milton Parkway and Ga. 400, right across the street from Avalon and Alpharetta’s planned multiuse trail project called the Alpha-Loop.

One aspect that should not be taken lightly on this project is that it is what real estate professionals call a ‘spec’ project. That means they are starting construction without any tenants signed. While this has become a little more common intown Atlanta, it is very rare outside the perimeter. The developer, and the banks lending them the money to build the project (in this case Federal Capital Partners) have to have a strong confidence in an area to build a spec project there. And there seems to be plenty of confidence in Alpharetta these days.

Avalon has become one of the most admired projects built in the last 10 years. Wakefield told me that communities were coming to him all the time wanting him to help plan an Avalon in their town. He said that’s just not feasible.

“Not everyone can support an Avalon,” he said.

The same goes for this spec, Class-A office building in Alpharetta. The confidence in the project is in place because if you are a company that needs to be in Class A office space, why wouldn’t you want to be within walking distance to Avalon? Or right off the exit of Ga. 400? Or right along a multi-use trail that takes riders and walkers 5 miles throughout the city from the new City Center, through Avalon and throughout the changing North Point Mall area?

Success breeds success. Alpharetta planted a flag back in the 1990s when Jim Cowart convinced local officials it was the right thing to do to build the first gated community in the metro area in Country Club of the South. That brought in CEOs who didn’t want to drive to downtown Atlanta, so they moved their offices to Alpharetta. Someone had the bright idea back then to line Winward Parkway with fiber-optic cable, making the desolate roadway the most connected roadway in

the country back then. That drew in data centers, regional headquarters and headquarters from across the country.

And on and on it goes. Now the uses are all playing off of each other, making each other more successful. With the new City Center, Alpharetta added a significant amount of retail. The thing about retail is that it needs customers to survive. So, all around the City Center are new residential developments that will supply customers on weeknights and on the weekends — and new office buildings that will supply customers on weekdays. The office-buildings are there because the retail provides a vibrant and fun atmosphere for employees to get to be in. Unemployment is low and businesses are doing everything they can to draw in top talent. Being located near an Avalon, or Alpharetta City Center, or the Beltline in Atlanta, give those businesses a huge advantage. A recent study showed that many of today’s employees are willing to take less money to be in an office that is in a walkable and vibrant environment. That’s good because that office space is getting more expensive.

A completion date has not yet been set for the new office project.

Increase Efficiency Save on your monthly utility bills by scheduling inspections and maintenance service calls for your HVAC system, plumbing and electricity. These inspections will ensure your systems are operating effectively and efficiently.

with the highest three Joy Scores were a kitchen renovation (10), closet renovation (10) and full interior paint job (9.8).

If a kitchen or closet renovation sounds daunting and expensive, a change of paint is a basic, fairly cost-effective way to freshen up your home’s interior. Also, simple changes in décor, such as throw pillows or rugs, can make your living spaces feel like new.

Give Your Landscaping a Makeover Weather permitting, you should give your lawn a makeover before the spring season arrives. Allow plants and flowers to blossom easily by laying fresh mulch as well as trimming dead branches from trees and shrubs. This will provide fresh, clear space for new life to flourish. Also, you should remove and replace any dead plants and consider enhancing your landscape with patio pavers and other outdoor additions.

Boys Region 7-6A basketball tournament preview

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The boys Region 7-AAAAAA tournament tips off this week at Chattahoochee. Nine teams will vie for the region title, and the top four teams will earn berths in the state tournament.

No. 1 Chattahoochee Chattahoochee compiled another strong regular season to capture the No. 1 seed with a 13-3 record against region opponents. The Cougars are the only 7-AAAAAA team to carry a top-10 ranking in Class 6A entering the tournament.

Junior AJ White and senior Region Player of the Year Cameron Sheffield continued to lead Hooch offensively this season. Both guards have strong outside shooting, and 6-foot-6 Sheffield is a formidable presence in the paint.

The Cougars enter the tournament averaging 67 points per game in region play and were second in fewest points allowed.

Hooch’s three regular season region losses were all by fewer than seven points.

Chattahoochee could be poised to reach its first region tournament finals since the 2012-13 season, falling just short last year with a 72-70 loss to North Atlanta in the semifinals.

Hooch will be chasing its first region title since the 2011-12 season.

In earning the No. 1 seed, the Cougars have an automatic bid to the state tournament. They will take on the winner of No. 4 Johns Creek and No. 5 Centennial in the semifinals.

No. 3 Cambridge Defending 7-AAAAAA champion Cambridge remained among the region’s top teams this year despite losing a talented senior class following the 201819 season. With new talent emerging this year, the Bears have continued the program’s rise to prominence from a bottom-dweller to championship contender. Cambridge compiled an 11-5 region record in the regular season for the No. 3 seed.

The Bears closed out their regular season Jan. 28 with a 68-50 loss to No. 1 seed Chattahoochee.

The Bears have focused on playing better defensive this year, and it has paid off with the team entering the tournament having allowed the fewest points in 7-AAAAAA play. Cambridge has beaten its opponents by an average of 20 points per game in their region wins.

The team has seen significant contributions from several players, with senior forward Sola Adebisi, senior wing E.J. Smith, senior guard Cole Bearden and junior guard Davis Sager leading the way.

A year after earning the program’s first region title, the Bears will look to repeat as champs this week.

Cambridge takes on the winner of No. 6 North Atlanta vs. No. 9 Dunwoody.

The Bears and North Atlanta met in the last two 7-AAAAAA tournament finals, splitting the series.

If the Gladiators are to capture the program’s first region title, their defensive play will need to improve. Only Dunwoody and Centennial allowed more points in region play during the regular season.

At the very least, Johns Creek will look to earn the program’s first playoff bid since the 2015-16 season by placing among the top four teams in the region tournament. The Gladiators open play against No. 5 Centennial with a berth in the state tourney on the line. With a win, Johns Creek could then pursue its firstever win in the state playoffs.

The Gladiators compiled a 16-8 overall regular season record and enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed with 10 wins in region play.

Johns Creek’s success has been driven by a high-caliber offense with five players averaging double digit scoring per game. Led by seniors Chase McKey, Nick Willis, Jordan Johnson, Javani Brown and junior Steven Lyles, the Gladiators were tops in the region in scoring with 73 points per game in 7-AAAAAA play.

No. 5 Centennial Centennial is looking to end its state tournament appearance drought this week. The Knights enter the tournament with a 9-7 mark against its 7-AAAAAA foes in the regular season. They tied with North Atlanta for the No. 5 seed and won tiebreakers.

The Knights’ balanced offense and defense has been led by guards Mansir Williamson, Logan Turner, Kaleb Jordan and forward Julian Nixon. Centennial was fifth in points per game and seventh in points allowed during regular season region games.

Though they enter the region tournament in the middle of the pack, the team has shown it can down top opponents.

Centennial took down Chattahoochee 89-85 in overtime Jan. 10.

Region 7-6A girls basketball tournament preview

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The girls Region 7-AAAAAA tournament tips off this week at Chattahoochee. Nine teams will vie for the region title, and the top four teams will earn berths in the state tournament.

The top four seeds for the region tournament were all decided on tiebreakers. Alpharetta and Cambridge tied for the top spot, while Johns Creek and Pope tied for third.

No. 1 Alpharetta The Raiders needed no adjustment period under first-year head coach Rickey Jordan or the loss of significant players to graduation. Alpharetta charged to a 14-2 region record in the regular season.

The Raiders have one of the region’s top-scoring offenses led by a trio of underclassmen. Sophomores Jodi Goins and Simone Lett each average over 11 points scoring, with Njeri Lewis and

junior Mary Grace Durham each netting eight per contest. Goins also leads the team in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks per game.

Alpharetta and Cambridge jostled for the lead in the region standings much of the year, split their regular season matchups, and each finished at 14-2 in region play. The Raiders earned the No. 1 seed through the third tiebreaker, the number of region road wins in the regular season.

The Raiders will open against the winner of No. 8 Chattahoochee and No. 9 Northview.

If Alpharetta earns a state tournament berth, they will look to end their streak of three straight losses in the opening round.

No. 2 Cambridge Cambridge has already had its best season in program history, and the Bears hope to continue their success with a run in the region tournament and a berth in the state playoffs.

The Bears compiled a 14-2 region record to secure the No. 2 seed, their only losses coming to two of the region’s top teams, Johns Creek and Alpharetta.

Cambridge has the second highest scoring offense behind Pope in regular season games and averaged 57 points a contest. Much of that offense has been generated by standout freshman Jordynn Dudley, with several other players, including sophomore Angelina Confrancesco, having strong seasons on both sides of the court.

Cambridge’s defense led the region in fewest points allowed at 38 per contest, and the Bears allowed their opponents 50 or more points in only four region games.

The Bears will be seeking the program’s first region title this week, a year after the boy’s program won its first.

Cambridge will take on No. 7 North Atlanta in the first round. The Bears won the regular season matchups between the teams, 54-30 and 62-23.

Cambridge is chasing its first appearance in the state tournament.

No. 4 Johns Creek After a strong regular season, the Gladiators enter the region tournament with a 12-4 mark against region opponents and a three-game win streak. The Gladiators tied with Pope in the final region standings, but the Greyhounds took the No. 3 seed through tiebreakers.

The Gladiators have been led offensively by guards Ahmia Childs and Carson Tanguilig, with significant contributions from Kate Powers, Samantha Breslow and Jillian Davis. Johns Creek averaged 55 points per game against region opponents.

Johns Creek had a challenging slate of games in the final weeks of the regular season that included matchups with Pope, Alpharetta and Cambridge.

Milton boys enter postseason as top seed with 21-4 record

By ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com The Milton boys basketball team entered the 2019-20 season with some of the highest expectations surrounding the program in recent history. The season isn’t over yet, but by most measures, the Eagles have lived up to those expectations.

The Eagles wrapped up the regular season with a 21-4 record overall, going undefeated in region play and losing only one game to an in-state team, Grayson, the consensus No. 1 team in the state and one of the top 10 teams in the country. The Eagles played Grayson in the second game of the season and lost by one point.

“For us playing a team of that caliber that early in the season, and honestly we were up double digits most of that game, it gave us a lot of confidence,” Milton head coach Allen Whitehart said. “We discussed that throughout the season that we feel like we can play with anybody. We discussed that we only had one loss in-state and the other three were out-of-state. We have a lot of stuff to work on, but we have a lot of confidence as we go into this playoff run.”

Other than the loss to Grayson, the Eagles fell to teams from New York, Kentucky and Ohio. They defeated teams from Wisconsin, Alabama, North Carolina along with in-state basketball powerhouses Kell and Wheeler.

The Eagles undoubtedly impressed in their non-region schedule, but the record they compiled within Region 5-7A carries much more significance for their postseason hopes.

Milton went 10-0 against region opponents during the regular season, winning by an average of 17.9 points per game.

“As we were goal-setting going into the season, [going undefeated in region

play] was one of our goals,” Whitehart said. “We talked about it going into the game, and we talked about it after. It’s a good sign for us to take care of business within the region.”

Several Milton players were recognized for their standout play during the season with the recent announcement of the 2019-20 All-Region team.

Sophomore guard Bruce Thornton earned Region Player of the Year honors, as announced by the region’s coaches on Feb. 1, and three other Eagles made the All-Region team, senior Evan Hurst and freshmen Kanaan Carlyle and L.T. Overton.

When the Region 5-7A tournament tips off this week at Forsyth Central, the top-seeded Eagles will be resting at home. As the top team in the region, Milton earned a bye during the first round of the region tournament and has technically guaranteed its spot in the state tournament.

The Eagles open up play in the semifinals of the region tournament on Feb. 5 against the winner of the No. 4 seed West Forsyth and the No. 5 seed Forsyth Central. If Milton wins, it would move on to the region championship game on Friday, Feb. 7.

Because the top four teams in the Region 5-7A Tournament advance to the 7A state tournament, the Eagles are guaranteed to make it into the state tournament.

Still, the Eagles still have plenty to play for in the region tournament.

Besides bragging rights, their finish will determine their seeding for the state tournament. A top finish would give them a high seeding in the state tournament.

A win in the region tournament could be the difference between hosting a state playoff game and traveling to an opponent’s gym.

Titans surge past West Hall in second half on senior night BT girls notch win behind Hynekamp

By ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Blessed Trinity boys basketball outclassed West Hall in its final game of the regular season, although the match was a tale of two halves.

After an evenly matched first quarter, Blessed Trinity held a 17-14 lead, but West Hall’s bench caught fire in the second to give the Spartans a 30-27 lead at the half.

Blessed Trinity came out of the locker room and looked like an entirely different team in the second half. The Titans began the third quarter on a 23-2 run and outscored the Spartans 44-15 in the second half.

“We’re a team right now that has peaks and valleys,” Blessed Trinity head coach Mark Moses said. “It’s an intensity thing, and that was the difference in the second half. We clamped down in the second half. We didn’t make any adjustments with what we did, really.”

Senior Justin Zimmer led BT’s offense early with 11 points in the first quarter on senior night. But it was the lone nonsenior in the starting lineup who stole the show in the second half. Junior point guard Jax Bouknight led all scorers in the game with 22 points, 10 coming during the Titans’ explosive third quarter.

“He’s really good,” Moses said. “He’s our offense. He’s averaging about 19 points per game for us. And when he gets motivated to play defense, that’s when you have to watch out.”

The Titans erased West Hall’s lead in the third to take a commanding 53-35 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

All momentum belonged to the home team at that point, and the Titans made sure they kept it that way.

The Zimmer twins combined for 25

points, with Justin scoring 19 and Joseph netting six. Senior forward James Bryant added 11 points and pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.

Blessed Trinity’s win improves their record 15-8 overall and 10-2 in region play, ensuring them the No. 2 seed in the Region 7-AAAA tournament. Both of the Titans’ region losses came against No. 1 Denmark, who finished undefeated in region play.

But the team that took the floor Friday night for the Titans is a vastly different one than what was seen earlier this season. Bouknight has returned from a concussion that sidelined him in the beginning of the season, and Bryant returned from his duties on the Titans state-champion football team in late December.

Before they reach a possible rematch with the Danes, Blessed Trinity will have to get past a couple of opponents. The Titans take on Flowery Branch (0-23, 0-12) in the first round of the region tournament.

“We’ve just been focused on defense and getting stops,” Moses said. “We’re trying to keep teams in the 40s and be in the 50s on offense. Like I said, we’re a peaks and valleys team. If we’re in the valley, it’s going to be a tough game. If we can peak and stay there, I like our chances.”

GIRLS: BLESSED TRINITY 51, WEST HALL 40 The Blessed Trinity and West Hall girls got off to a fast start, but neither had much offensive success. Both teams started the game in a full-court press, resulting in a fast-paced first quarter with plenty of turnovers.

Gatorade names Blessed Trinity athlete Girls Runner of the Year

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Blessed Trinity junior Hannah Miniutti added to her list of accomplishments Jan. 27 when she was named the 2019-20 Gatorade Girls Cross-Country Runner of the Year, earning her the designation as the top female runner in the state for the athletic year.

“I never expected it, and it’s really special to me,” Miniutti said. “I’ve been doing everything I can possible to be the best runner I can be, and getting to run with these incredible people around me has pushed me to my limits. In Georgia, there are so many incredible runners, and it’s cool to have those people around me pushing me every race.”

After struggling with injuries the last two years, Miniutti is now back to full strength, and her Gatorade Runner of the Year award adds to her growing list of accolades over the last few months.

In December, she was named the girls Runner of the Year by the Atlanta Track Club. She also paced the field in the 2019 GHSA cross-country state championship meet to capture the girls Class 4A state championship in November. Her state meet time of 18:51.49 bested the previous BT girls program record by over 34 seconds.

She also took the top spot in the Region 7-AAAA championship meet and the Meet of Champions Tournament.

Miniutti was the only girls runner from Georgia to compete at the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Region championships where she finished 7th overall with a personal record of 17:46.7.

That result allowed the BT standout to qualify for the Nike Nationals in December where she placed 75th out of the country’s top 201 girls runners.

“Competing at nationals was so special, I never could have seen myself getting there at the beginning of the season,” Miniutti said. “I had watched YouTube videos of people talking about their experience at nationals, I thought how much of a dream it would be to compete there.”

As the cross-country season progressed, Minuitti’s coach said she could potentially qualify for nationals. While she believed that might not be a strong possibility until next season, as the year went on she saw her goal of reaching the pinnacle of high school girls cross-country become a reality.

“The experience was unreal,” she said.

“They go all-out for the athletes. I got to meet so many new people and connections in the running world, and it is inspiring to have those runners by you.”

ever ask for. He cares so much for the runners, and he focuses on individualism and creating a training set for one person that is best for them. And my teammates and I always push each other. They are sisters to me. I couldn’t be more thankful to have that atmosphere.”

Miniutti will now turn her attention to track and field where she competes in the 1600- and 3200-meter races. She will also continue to seek out a program to join at the collegiate level. She has had unofficial visits to Georgia Tech and Georgia and will soon visit Furman University. A focus for the junior will be finding a program where she feels like a part of a second family, which is how she feels at Blessed Trinity, she said.

In winning the Gatorade award, Miniutti can bestow a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of her choosing. She is also now in the running for the Gatorade National Girls Cross-Country Runner of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.

Miniutti is the third North Fulton female athlete to earn the award in recent years. Lindsay Billings of Northview took the 2015-16 award, and Fellowship Christian’s Emma Grace Hurley was named runner of the year for the 201415 season.

Northview is seeking its first region tournament win since the 2011-12 season and face No. 8 Alpharetta in the first round. The teams split their regular season meetings with Northview winning 70-57 on Dec. 6 and Alpharetta taking the Jan. 17 matchup, 60-50.

The Wildcats enter the tournament averaging a region-low 50 points per game and are last in points allowed in 7-AAAAAA play.

Dunwoody has not won a region tournament game since finishing as the 7-AAAAAA tournament runner-up in the 2016-17 season. The Wildcats will look to end that streak when they take on No. 6 North Atlanta in the first round of the tournament.

Titans: Continued from Page 26 Blessed Trinity’s offense began finding its groove in the second quarter, and the Titans ended up taking the lead before halftime. Titans senior Erin Hynekamp led all scorers with 7 points, and junior Emma Jacobs finished with 10 rebounds in the half.

The Titans extended their lead after halftime with a 22-point third quarter.

Hynekamp, the lone senior on their roster, put on a show on senior night. The lefty couldn’t seem to miss, scoring 14 points off seven baskets in the third period.

The Titans led 39-26 after three quarters, and they were able to hold on to the lead in the fourth to earn a victory in their regular season finale.

Hynekamp put the finishing touch on her senior night with a few rebounds in the fourth to finish with a double-double (23 points and 10 rebounds). Jacobs finished the game with nine points and 15 rebounds.

“It was great for Erin to step up and play big for her team,” Blessed Trinity head coach Tim Rountree said. “Being our lone senior, this was her moment to shine tonight. She really stepped up as a leader and captain and played tremendous for us. I’m just so proud of her. To get a win on senior night in her last time playing in Titans gymnasium, we’re really happy for her.”

For Blessed Trinity, the win over West Hall could end up improving their seed in the region tournament.

The Titans finished 8-15 overall and compiled a 3-9 record in region play, tied with Denmark. A tiebreaker, which Rountree said might end up being a coin toss, will determine who gets the fifth seed and who gets the sixth seed. West Hall finished winless in region play and will be the seventh and lowest seed in the upcoming region tournament.

Milton: Continued from Page 26 “You want to get a No. 1 seed [in the state tournament],” Whitehart said. “It puts you in the driver’s seat and gives you an opportunity to host some playoff games at home. So, one of our other goals is to win the region tournament as well.”

Already, this season has been one that Whitehart and Milton likely won’t forget any time soon.

“This group’s just a fun group to coach,” Whitehart said. “It’s fun to come to practice every day. When you talk to wins, there’s that culture of comradery. And we definitely have that. I think that’s a big part of our success is the fact that they play for each other.”

The team been led on both sides of the court by senior guard Adrien Lawrence, who averages 14 points per game.

She also leads the team in rebounds and steals. Jordan Strozier, a 6-foot-2 center, is a formidable presence in the paint and averages two blocks per game, while sophomore Gabby Litvak is one of the region’s top three-point scorers.

Dunwoody enters the tournament with three wins in their final five games.

The Wildcats were swept by the region’s leading teams but notched 2-0 records against Centennial, North Atlanta, Chattahoochee and Northview.

Dunwoody will battle Johns Creek in the opening round. The Wildcats

dropped both regular season meetings between the teams, 51-46 and 53-37.

No. 6 Centennial Centennial will look to break away from the middle of the pack in the region tournament and secure its first postseason trip since the 2015-16 season.

The Knights enter the tournament after a challenging slate of games to close out their regular season. After dropping a 39-37 heartbreaker to region leaders Alpharetta, the Knights took down North Atlanta but fell to Pope and Johns Creek in lopsided affairs.

No. 8 Chattahoochee Tournament hosts Chattahoochee (3-21, 2-14) notched just two region wins in the regular season, both against Northview.

The Cougars, under first year head coach Lorenzo Withrite, began the season with a non-region win against Berkmar but have since fallen on hard times.

Hooch has played Centennial close this season, losing the two matchups by a combined seven points, but the Cougars dropped their other 12 region games by at least 10 points.

The Cougars will be seeking their first region tournament win since 2017 when they take on Northview in the opening round. The winner of that contests faces No. 1 seed Alpharetta.
