MILTON, Ga. — Police are investigating the Jan. 12 theft of more than $37,000 worth of jewelry from a house for sale at Manor Bridge Drive. The homeowners and a broker showed the home to two clients for potential purchase that day, then later held an open house in which 11 people visited.

Woman discovers fraud while checking credit MILTON, Ga. — Police met with a Milton woman Jan. 13 after she learned of several fraudulent accounts opened under her name.

In late December, the woman conducted a credit check in order to get a car loan. She told police she found two inquiries on the credit check.

Over the next few weeks, the woman received two unauthorized credit cards at her residence as well as a letter about another credit card application that had been declined.

The woman investigated and found that the suspect had used her former name and an address for a recently listed rental house.

Police hunt shoplifter who stole electronics MILTON, Ga. — Police are looking for a man suspected of shoplifting about $400 worth of items Jan. 10 from the Target on Ga. 9.

The asset protection leader said that on the morning of Jan. 4, the suspect entered the store and used a magnetic key he had on his person to remove the security lock on an Xbox controller.

The suspect was then seen removing two Amazon tablets, worth $150 each, from the shelves and again removing

MILTON, Ga. — Police arrested a man Jan. 10 after he was identified as wanted during a traffic stop.

That afternoon, police were patrolling an active school zone on Birmingham Highway, when they spotted a Jeep pass by at a high rate of speed. The Jeep was clocked at 43 mph in a 25 mph-zone.

After stopping the vehicle police received an alert that the driver had an active warrant from Duluth.

Police arrested the man, 35-year-old Brandon Huff of Cumming, without incident for speeding and on warrant.

Jewelry, cash stolen from locked building ROSWELL, Ga. — Police are investigation a Dec. 30 burglary at a jewelry store on Holcomb Bridge Road in which $9,000 in jewelry and $10,000 in cash was reported stolen.

Police responded to a burglary call at the location that evening.

Police said the suspects had entered the store through the roof, where a security camera was pushed back, and a hole was cut through the roof close to the store’s safe.

Inside the store, a second hole was cut in the wall of the safe. The jewelry and cash were stolen from the safe.

Police said the suspects likely

exited through the back door, which appeared to have been pried open from the inside.

Woman loses thousands to fake ‘Apple’ technician ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman contacted police Jan. 6 after she realized she had been scammed out of $25,000 by someone claiming to represent Apple.

On Black Friday, Nov. 29, the woman received an email that appeared to be from the company. The mail said there was fraud on her computer and provided a number to call.

When she called the number, she was engaged in an 8-9 hour conversation with a person who instructed her to buy gift cards and read off the numbers.

Each time she complied with the request, the scammer said they had found more fraud on her computer.

Eventually, the woman became suspicious and hung up. At that point, she realized she had spent $25,000 on gift cards.

The woman said she had put off on making a report, because recent personal events had put her in a bad place mentally.

City continues to hash out details of new tree ordinance

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Nearly two years have passed since the city adopted an updated tree ordinance, but some of the regulations remain up in the air.

Talks on changes to the regulations continued Jan. 13 with a joint meeting between the Milton City Council and the city’s Planning Commission.

At the heart of the issue is balancing tree preservation without creating an overwhelming burden on developers or homeowners.

After months of talks between the city’s tree stakeholder committee and the Planning Commission, a new draft of the ordinance is close to carrying out that objective, city officials say.

“The ordinance does a great job in balancing the city’s dual objectives of preserving the tree canopy with understanding that open fields, pastures and agriculture setting are also critical in maintaining Milton’s small-town quality of life,” Community Development Director Parag Agrawal said.

Following recent discussions, the city’s representatives were presented with additional updates at last week’s meeting.

One change is the removal of regulations that would have restricted the creation of large, open yards. The update also gives homeowners some leeway when they want to cut down a tree on their property, allowing the city’s arborist to render judgment on whether recompense will be required.

At the heart of the issue is balancing tree preservation without creating an overwhelming burden on developers or homeowners. said. “You could only take down a tree if it was dead, dying or hazardous, and really no other reason. So, we wanted to give more discretion to the city arborist in that respect.”

The regulations will also prevent clearcutting. New language has been added that requires at least one-third of a site’s tree canopy coverage must come from existing trees on the site.

Most homes within the city fall under AG-1 zoning, which will now require 57 percent tree canopy coverage, down from 60 percent originally required in the document. Coverage is calculated by the total size of the canopy for all trees on a property when each tree reaches full maturity.

Lowering the coverage figure was more in line with the current canopy coverage of the city, Dewitt said, and Milton did not want to burden home-

owners by requiring they add to their property’s canopy.

The updates also raise the requirement from 20 to 30 percent required canopy coverage on business properties.

To incentivize larger lots, any undeveloped residential property over 3 acres would have no minimum canopy size, only that the current canopy be maintained.

Homeowners wishing to remove trees from their property will be required to pay an application fee, $25 per tree, and could have to pay into the city’s tree fund depending on the situation. For dead trees, there would be no fee and the homeowner would not be required to plant additional trees to make up for the lost canopy coverage.

Representatives balked at the $25 application fee, but City Manager Steve Krokoff said it is a policy decision, and the City Council could change the requirement.

For removing healthy trees, a property owner would be required to maintain the minimum canopy coverage based on the site’s zoning. For instance, an AG-1 home that has an existing canopy of 81 percent would not be required to pay tree recompense if the site remained above the 57 percent coverage minimum after removal of the trees.

When cutting down a tree puts the site under the minimum canopy, property owners will be required to plant trees to make up for the lost coverage. Another alternative would be to plant two-thirds of the canopy and pay the remaining onethird into the city’s tree fund.

Property owners could plant any combination of trees for recompense, and the trees can be planted anywhere

on their property.

Milton would require more recompense for the removal of heritage trees, which are either 75 years or older or have been designated as significant by state forestry commissions, which are obtained by the property owner. However, Krokoff said no heritage trees are located in the city, and representatives argued that most homeowners would likely not want to create an added burden on their property by seeking heritage tree designation.

Those seeking waivers from the regulations can present their case to the Planning Commission on a quarterly basis under terms of the updated ordinance.

Krokoff said the adoption of the updates is still a few months down the road with the city still requiring more “wordsmithing” and a legal review of the ordinance.

Once the regulation is passed, many representatives said informing the public will be vital so property owners are aware of the rules before they cut down any trees.

Councilwoman Laura Bentley said the city should also inform tree companies about the updates because most property owners do not remove large trees on their own. Councilman Rick Mohrig suggested also informing neighborhood HOAs. The Jan. 13 discussion comes a few weeks after the city elected to extend the option for developers to either use the city’s tree ordinance adopted in February, 2018, or the prior regulations.

Fulton County commissioners delay action on 2020 budget

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY — Fulton County commissioners are the final stages of locking down the county’s 2020 budget, but first, they have to decide how to spend a $20.4 million windfall.

The total budget is $1.78 billion, an increase of about 6.2 percent over the 2019 budget. The general fund budget, which pays for day-to-day operation of county government, sits at $758 million, up 5.5 percent.

The budget projects the county will be able to lower its property tax rate from 9.89 mills based on the multi-year financial plan and projected growth within the county. However, the tax rate will not be set until this summer.

The budget includes priorities al-

ready approved, such as a new $32.5 million animal shelter, the rollout of new election equipment, improvements to senior centers and senior services, and pay-for-performance employee compensation.

“Those investments in people and assets have allowed us to exceed our customer satisfaction targets of 80 percent again this year,” County Manager Dick Anderson said. “That’s four years in a row citizens have indicated a high level of satisfaction with our services.”

In 2019, the county exceeded its midyear revenue projections of $699 million by $24.7 million. With actual expenses passing expectations by $4.3 million, the county was left with an extra $20.4 million to consider for its 2020 budget.

The 2020 budget leaves a reserve balance equal to 16.7 percent of total

expenditures, but also allocates some of the additional money to strengthen IT infrastructure.

On Jan. 8, Commissioner Bob Ellis moved for approval of the county manager’s budget proposal, which was seconded by Commissioner Lee Morris.

“Looking at what you’d originally proposed, looking at the changes here and where we want to focus and what’s going on around us in the environment, it’s a pretty fair and smart allocation of funds,” Ellis said.

However, some commissioners were disappointed their requested items were not funded and wanted to see more funding for court services.

“We took all requests from commissioners and departments and vetted them,” Anderson said.

Some of the requested court improve-

ments were not included in his recommendation because of the large number of vacancies in those department. Right now, he said, there are about 50 vacancies across the district attorney, solicitor general and public defender’s offices and more than 250 throughout the whole justice system.

“We are recommending that we continue to work with the justice partners on reform and recommendations that are emerging before we add new resources,” Anderson said. “I think we have plenty of slack to pick up before additional resources are required.”

In a 4-3 vote the budget was held until the next meeting, with Ellis, Morris and Chair Robb Pitts casting the dissenting votes.

The commissioners’ next scheduled meeting was set for Jan. 22.

R&B artist’s former Milton home going to auction block on Feb. 4

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — A Milton home listed as once being owned by famed R&B artist Keith Sweat will be auctioned off by the city through a fieri fascia, or lien, on the property. The home, located at 2380 Hopewell Plantation Drive, will be auctioned at City Hall on Feb. 4 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Virtualglobetrotting.com lists the house as once belonging to the artist, and Fulton County records show the home as being transferred through a deed of gift from Keith D Sweat to “Sweat Keith D Trustee” in 1999.

The home, which sits on 2.1 acres, was built in 1991 and features five bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two fireplaces.

A July 2017 description says the home was renovated with “elegant appointments” and hardwood and marble flooring. The house also contains a dining room, family room, laundry room, office, pantry and recreation room. There is also an attached garage, basement and patio.

The county’s 2019 full appraisal for the property was $862,800. In 2018, the property tax bill for the home was just over $11,700.

According to Sweat’s website, the artists has made the Billboard 200 Albums of the Year Chart eight times in his career, and his songs have appeared six times on the Billboard Hot 100 Song of Year Charts. Sweat has released 14 solo albums beginning with 1987’s “Make It Last Forever,” which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums Chart.

Sweat is perhaps best known for the title song to his debut solo album, along with “I Want Her,” “I’ll Give All My Love to You,” “Nobody” and “Twisted.”

The artist has been nominated for several accolades at the American Music Awards and was a nominee for the Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award. He was named the favorite male R&B/soul artist for 1997 at the American Music Awards.

The updated ordinance, which is still being fine-tuned, bases tree density by canopy coverage once a tree reaches full maturity.

When the new regulations passed, it was met with criticisms from some developers who argued it was too stringent.

Around six months after the ordinance was adopted, the city began permitting developers to choose which set of regulations to follow. Since then, the city has continued to extend the option to developers.

Kemp continues focus on education issues for 2020 Governor pledges fully funded schools, teacher pay increase

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Standing on the “platform” on which he was elected, Gov. Brian Kemp continued his focus on education and his plans for the state’s 2,000-plus public schools and their 2 million students.

In his Jan. 16 State of the State address to legislators in Atlanta, Kemp frequently referenced his roots in the construction business, comparing it to Georgia as it stands today, and his goals for the future.

“I tip my hat to [former] Gov. Deal and the lawmakers who came before me, those who poured the concrete and laid the footings,” said Kemp.

Last year, Kemp’s first statewide address focused on school safety in the aftermath of high-profile acts of school violence across the nation. He pledged a $30,000 grant for every school in the state — at a cost of $69 million — to beef up measures to protect students.

Moving forward, Kemp said his focus

now is the learning environment inside the schools.

“In year two, it’s time to set our sights on the sheet rock, the siding and the bricks,” said Kemp. “Each side of the structure will protect those on the inside by providing an environment ripe for learning, opportunity and growth.”

The governor also committed to fully funding Quality Based Education (QBE) which provides state dollars to public schools, reducing the number of mandated tests for students and completing the dismantling of the highly maligned Common Core standards.

While he outlined few specifics in the state address, Kemp pledged to provide teachers with the rest of the $5,000 raise he promised on the campaign trail.

Last year, teachers received a $3,000 raise with the promise of the remaining money this year.

“In my budget, I have included a $2,000 pay raise for all public school educators [to enhance] retention rates, boost recruitment numbers and improve educational outcomes,” Kemp said. “By investing in our educators, we can build a strong house.”

Early bills focus on education The 2020 Session of the Georgia General Assembly officially kicked off on Jan. 13 with 236 senators and representatives gathering under the gold dome for the 40-day legislative session.

No date has been set for the end of the session. Last year, the legislature concluded on April 2.

While topics surrounding casinos, gambling and income tax rates may grab headlines, issues surrounding education and schools will once again be plentiful.

Here is a look at bills introduced in week one in the House and Senate which impact schools across Georgia.

HB 444: “The Dual Enrollment Act.” Aims to refine the process in the popular (and expensive) state-funded program that allows high school students to earn college credits, certifications and degrees. This bill would set a credit hour cap, revise course offerings and limit student eligibility beginning next school year.

HB 736: Establishes a loan forgiveness program for science, technology, engineering, arts and math teachers who

agree to teach for at least five years in an underperforming (turnaround eligible) school, and have a tuition loan balance from a state college or university.

HB 741: Creates and defines a master teacher program in schools with a contract amendment or intervention contract.

HB 764: Expands the state law to allow unused or “surplused” public/ state facilities to be made available to charter schools.

HB 783: Raises the age students can drop out from any public, private or home school program from 16 to 17 years old.

HB 784: Allows local boards to discuss, vote upon, review or assess school safety plans in executive session. Current law exempts safety plans from open records. This bill makes the law clearer for boards.

HR 893: Proposes a constitutional amendment to lower the voting age to 16 for school board elections and school funding (i.e. SPLOST) ballot questions.

SB 298: Adds vaping and smoking information to the required drugs and alcohol curriculum and includes changes in the criminal code around vaping.

Roswell makes strides in courting film industry Lifetime movie filmed at Roswell City Hall

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell’s new initiative to attract the film industry has borne fruit, most recently with the filming of a Lifetime original movie at City Hall. And the city is prepared to extend efforts further.

It’s all thanks to the Mayor’s Movie Task Force, which was created this summer to analyze the industry and market Roswell as a film-ready city.

Mayor Lori Henry praised the task force’s successes.

“We are lightyears ahead of where we were even a year ago,” she said.

The task force — made up of staff from the City of Roswell, Visit Roswell and Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce — identified five areas they want to tackle to make Roswell more film-friendly, including perception, resources, ease of process, opportunities and recruitment.

According to Visit Roswell Executive Director Andy Williams, Georgia is currently the number one filming location in the world. But when film scouts search for filming locations in the North Atlanta area, they are directed inside Atlanta.

The Mayor’s Movie Task Force is changing that, with a newly updated Film Roswell page on the Visit Roswell website.

The city has worked with ReelScout, used by the film industry to scout locations, to create a section on the site featuring only Roswell locations and businesses.

Williams said there are several benefits to bringing the film industry to Roswell.

Films, for example, provide jobs for local businesses, such as caterers, carpenters, electricians, hair stylists, makeup artists and plumbers.

Roswell felt those benefits in November with the Lifetime filming of “You Can’t Take My Daughter,” which generated about $78,500 for the city in four days.

And Roswell has a unique draw for the film industry: it’s vacant jail.

“The fact that we have a vacant jail right now is huge,” Williams said. “Not a lot of communities offer that. It’s one of the most highly sought-after pieces of inventory.”

Henry learned about the attractiveness of the jail firsthand at an Atlanta convention for the film industry.

“I said we’ve got an empty jail in Roswell, and you could have heard a pin drop,” Henry said. “Everybody, all of these scouts, came rushing at us.”

Since the inception of the Mayor’s Movie Task Force, it has received 34 film leads. Of those, it won five, lost 20, has four active and has five inactive.

By comparison, between January 2018-June 2019, Visit Roswell had about half that, at 16 leads.

Some of the latest leads, like Lifetime, are big studios such as Marvel, DC and Warner Bros, Williams said.

“We’re starting to land really qualified production companies,” he said.

Going forward, the task force already has several plans to increase its inventory and generate more leads.

It plans to soon establish quarterly community workshops to educate property and business owners about working with the film industry and how to post listings on ReelScout. It is also planning to create a sizzle reel advertising the city and its assets and to create incentives for filming in Roswell.

E-signed closings a sign of the times We are now 12 years removed from the recession that crashed a huge party in our country, spurring regulators and policy-makers to implement stiff new checks-andbalances. I was asked by a friend the other day: “are we better off now?”

I would say yes, in many ways we certainly are. I cannot Geoff smith speak for the highest levels of Assurance Financial, this industry. If you read “The Big gsmith@lendtheway.com Short,” the one entity that really had the ability to stop the crisis was the ratings agencies who were rating very risky loans as if they were top-tier. Whether it was because they were goaded to do so or because they were just sloppy, it could have prevented some of the country’s largest investment firms from investing in what they may have thought were solid investments — or at least hedged better against them, knowing the amount of risk that was really associated with them.

I cannot speak for those folks. Here on the ground, things have certainly tightened up. Our version of those ratings agencies, in some ways, are the appraisers and underwriters. The appraisal system is riddled with checks and balances right now. Almost every appraisal now goes through a national review and is graded based on data of recent sales and on recent appraisals in the area and on each house they are appraising for.

The criteria are pretty simple too.

An appraiser wants to value your house based typically on three houses that have sold in the same neigh-

borhood in the last six months with the same number of bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage. If they don’t have those, they can stretch it a little.

This has forced some of the larger appraisal management companies, out of fear for getting a low score on their record, to put out appraisals that might be lower than actual value. It has also done a decent job of keeping others in check from handing out unreasonable values. Here at Assurance, we have three solid appraisers on a rotation that nearly guarantees a reasonable appraisal on every deal.

Values on houses have gone up quickly here in Atlanta over the last 12 years. It wasn’t because people were willing to buy houses for way more than they were worth, and banks were willing to lend them the money to do it. It’s because of the solid market principals of supply and demand. Our city keeps growing and our homebuilders cannot keep up. So more people are fighting for fewer houses, which is driving up prices.

That isn’t going to change much anytime soon.

How we underwrite loans changed a whole lot after the crash too. And for several years you heard borrowers complaining about lenders “wanting everything including my DNA,” or “my first-born child.” It was kind of a wild time as banks and underwriters were trying to wrap their arms around the bevy of new regulations.

They were doing it with a fear that if they did it wrong, they would have their licenses to make loans pulled. So there was some redundancy for sure.

For example, to figure out a person’s income, lenders were required to get two years of tax returns, two years of W2s, paystubs showing year-to-date totals, and if that wasn’t enough, written confirmation from

someone in their company’s HR department. That’s a lot of redundant information just to find one salary.

Today, here at Assurance, because technology has progressed and because we are allowed to trust it more, some clients’ incomes are verified digitally during the application process. And some can actually get approved in seconds after submitting an application.

Another huge improvement here is that we just started allowing borrowers to e-sign most of their closing documents. So instead of having to hand-sign 40 minutes-worth of documents at the closing, it’s more like 10 minutes-worth. I had my first closing on a home purchase last week and we were done in 25 minutes — and it was only that long because the buyer and seller kept talking about the neighborhood. Once we were done, we all just sat there and kept talking, like we didn’t know what to do. It was fantastic.

So the lending industry, for some banks anyway, has become more streamlined and sensible. That’s great because it gives lenders a better opportunity to make the experience more about the home-buying or money-saving than about the process of approval.

at a lot of events, shaking a lot of hands, and handing out a lot of business cards is not a measure of effective networking.

When you show up at a networking event, be prepared. It is not the time to spend 20 minutes telling a few people about your business. It’s a time to spend a few minutes with a lot of people letting them know who you are, what you do, the type of customers you serve and the value you provide. It’s best to ask questions about their business before telling them about yours!

Chambers of commerce, Rotaries, business associations, industry groups and professional associations all offer a tremendous opportunity to develop new contacts. Pick your networking events wisely, because going to all of them is simply impossible.

If you’re not attending networking events, you’re missing a big opportunity to generate more business leads. Put a plan together and get out there. You’ll be happy you did!

Teams, swimmers earn Fulton County championships Johns Creek boys repeat as champs; Cambridge girls team earns top spot

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — North Fulton swim and dive programs competed for Fulton County championships Jan. 9 at West Gwinnett Park Aquatic Center with local squads sweeping the top spots.

Johns Creek won the overall title and boys championship, while Cambridge earned the county title in girls competition.

The meet was also the fastest on record with swimmers breaking 12 of the 24 meet records.

Johns Creek continued its overall dominance of the meet by capturing its fifth straight title in combined girls and boys scores. The Gladiators bested Alpharetta by 87 points for the overall title.

The combined championship was powered by several wins by the boys team, which led the field by 82 points with several individual county titles.

Johns Creek’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of David Hsi, Taylor Eaton, Andrew Simmons and Jason Steel captured the top spot on the podium with a meet record 1:26.83, nearly two seconds ahead of Alpharetta in second. In the 400-yard relay, the team placed second.

Simmons earned another meet record by capturing the 100-yard backstroke title over three seconds ahead of Eaton in second. The junior was runnerup in the 200-yard freestyle race.

Steel placed as runner-up in two individual events, the 50-yard and 100yard freestyle. Eaton was second in the 200-yard individual medley, and Hsi, a senior, won the 100-yard fly county title.

Anthony Margarite, Jason Bao, Preston Browne and Christopher Bodea placed second in the 200-yard medley relay for the Gladiators.

Freshman Britton Spann finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle ahead of teammates Nathan Parez and Margarite. Spann was third in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Though the Johns Creek girls came up short of their 10th straight girls county championship, their strong showing allowed the Gladiators to take the championship in combined scores.

Senior Adeline Farrington paced the field in the 200-yard individual medley and set a meet record of 2:05.02, over two seconds ahead of the next competitor. She also placed second in the 100yard breaststroke.

Farrington joined fellow seniors Amy Hitzel and Isabella Cicogna and junior McKenzie Rowan to capture second in the 200-yard medley relay.

SPECIAL/PAULFARRINGTON

Johns Creek captured the combined team championship at the Fulton County swim and dive championship Jan. 9. The Gladiators finished first in boys competition and second in girls.

The Gladiators’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Farrington, Rowan, Allison Swift and Evelyn Hedrick placed second.

Rowan was second in the 50-yard freestyle just ahead Hedrick. The pair placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100-yard event. Abby Etter led Johns Creek in the 1-meter dive with a thirdplace finish, Cassidy EiGomayel placed fourth in the 100-yard fly, and Swift was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Despite a strong performance, the Johns Creek girls came up short of the girls championship to Cambridge, who beat out the Gladiators by 37 points.

The Cambridge girls won two team titles and two individual championships at the meet to dethrone the nine-time defending girls county title winners.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Sophie Brison, Jayla Brown, Claire Kerber and Abigail Grottle broke the meet record by over two-tenths of a second to top the podium.

The same grouping set another meet record to win the 400-yard freestyle relay title, besting the field by over three seconds.

Grottle topped off her standout performance with another meet record in individual competition. The senior placed first in the 200-yard freestyle and earned a meet record time of 1:54.28.

Grottle added a fourth championship by taking the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle race. Grottle has won the Fulton County championship in the two events for three straight years.

Brison, a freshman, captured the Fulton County title in the 100-yard backstroke ahead of teammate Eva

Medici in third. Brison was runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley.

Brown placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with teammate Emma Guy in third.

Kerber was county runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle and Kate McKay placed fourth in the 1-meter dive.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Medici, Guy, Brooke McLain and Samantha Hamilton were third.

Alpharetta had strong showings from its boys and girls teams and finished second in combined scores.

The boys team captured individual and team county championships to power their second-place finish in boys scores.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Jerry Wu, Charles Lu, Nathan Jin and Phillip Kuznetsov beat the previous meet record by over half a second with a 3:10.65 to best the field.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Jack Casey, Wu, Xiao and Peter Meng also took home the championship.

Jin and Lu each captured individual titles with Jin pacing the field by two seconds in the 200-yard individual medley and Lu earning the 100-yard freestyle title.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lu, Jin, Xiao and Liam Clarke placed second.

Xiao was runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke, Jin was third in the 100yard backstroke and Casey placed third in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Alpharetta girls were led by several county titles, including three from freshman Lauren Hinton. Hinton swept the freestyle competition, standing

atop the podium in the 50- and 100yard events. She also competed on the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Alicia Henry, Alex Clark and Audrie Uphues.

The team broke a meet record set in 2013 by over two seconds to take the county title.

Clark added to her championships with the title in the 100-yard fly. She also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle.

Henry also captured an individual title for the Raiders in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Allie Traugott scored nearly 18 points over the second-place finisher in 1-meter dive to take the championship.

Henry, Clark, Hinton and Ava Paikeday were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Centennial placed fourth in combined scores, led by a third-place finish in boys competition.

Sebastian Sergile led the Knights with championships in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races.

Sergile, along with Aidan Saunders, Justin Bender and Bryan Teffeteller were third in the 200-yard medley relay.

Sergile, Bender, Teffeteller and Rehse Goodsite finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Camden Bowers was county runnerup in the 1-meter dive ahead of teammate Ben Engel in third.

Madeline Singletary led the Centennial girls team by placing second in the 500-yard freestyle and third in the 200yard event. Katherine Ward was third in the 100-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley.

Chattahoochee placed sixth in combined scores with several top-5 placements.

Lilly Kasra, Danielle Urban, Katie Wong and Seema Chavis were third in the girls 200-yard medley relay and fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Kasra was county runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke and third in the 100-yard fly. Wong was third in the 200yard individual medley and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Charles Nelms had the best overall finish for the boys team, placing fifth in the 1-meter dive.

With a limited field of competitors, Northview bested Westlake for eighth in combined scores.

The girls were led by Emily Wei who captured a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Wei, Kate Wilson, Hannah Roberts and Lauren Lynch were 10th in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Northview boys had three finishes just outside the top-10. Chris Shin was 11th in the 100-yard freestyle and captured 11th with Jason Lee, Edward Cho and Andrew Gavin in the 200-yard medley relay. The Titans’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Alan Tao, Ricky Du, Andrew Romanchik and Siddhartha Yalavarthi placed 11th.

Loneliness: The public health threat no one talks about NAPS — There is a public health threat looming across the United States that’s not visible to most but affects nearly half of all Americans daily: loneliness. Social isolation is as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and is twice as harmful as obesity. Worst of all, loneliness is a contributing factor in senior suicides, which are rising in the U.S. While it is not something people like to think about, now more than ever, Americans must remove the stigma around mental health and spread awareness to better combat loneliness.

Many of the 12 million Americans over age 65 who live alone are entering the time of year where that lack of companionship and isolation is most palpable: winter. Whether physical or travel challenges keep seniors from attending family gatherings or the harsh weather deters them from venturing out for a social event, seniors can suffer from prolonged loneliness that can quickly manifest into more serious issues.

Loneliness does not have to be synonymous with getting older or with aging in place. Here are tips on how to help keep loneliness—and its negative health effects—at bay: Intervene early: Spotting loneliness in yourself or someone you

love can be difficult. The most common physical and behavioral signs of loneliness include persistent sadness, impaired cognitive performance, lower self-esteem, or lack of motivation and energy. Early intervention can positively affect one’s quality of life, so it’s important to address these symptoms as soon as possible before they become overwhelming.

Leverage technology: Technology can play a key role in reducing loneliness, ensuring seniors are always connected to loved ones and care teams who can monitor and interact with them. Winter skin: Why even Santa flies south in the Winter

Winter in Georgia is a time when dropping outdoor temperatures cause us to turn up the heat and inadvertently turn down the humidity.

Dr. Taylor According to the EPA, humidity should be kept between 30% and 50% for general health and comfort. Unfortunately, for people with eczema, lower humidity levels may be insufficient to keep skin from becoming dry, itchy and cracked. Dermatologists often suggest that patients with eczema set an indoor humidity target of at least 45-55%.

Humidity can be simply measured with inexpensive gauges picked up at a hardware store or online, and humidifiers and vaporizers are great additions as long as they are frequently cleaned and mold is not allowed to grow within units.

More advanced central heating and air systems even have settings that can help help reach humidity and temperature targets, sometimes decreasing the need to purchase additional machines.

The most basic intervention for most patients’ dry skin is simply not to wash the areas that are dry and cracked with soap and water. Soap strips good oils from our skin, and hot water has the same effect. Our faces, chests and backs make a lot of oil and rarely develop eczema whereas the rest of the body makes less oil and is consequently susceptible to oil loss during bathing or washing. and are muddy, you don’t need to scrub your legs and hands with soap in the shower. Just let the soapy water from your shampoo run down your body, wash your groin and armpits and rinse off in warm but not hot water.

Then, pat dry. Don’t scrub dry. Immediately moisturize. Moisturize at least once more during the day and before bed. When washing dishes, use gloves.

After using the restroom, consider moisturizing antibacterial hand sanitizers instead of hot water and soap unless C diff or similar concerns necessitate soap and water.

Other creative interventions include getting a little bit of sunlight and decreasing allergen presence in your home and on the bed. Sunlight in excess causes skin cancer, but in moderation sunlight decreases inflammation in eczema-prone skin. Allergens like dust and dander can cause eczema flares for some people. An allergist can test for allergens and sensitivity to dust and dust mites, and for such people hypoallergenic bedding covers, frequent laundering and vacuuming can help decrease eczema.

For many patients, topical steroids, calcineurin inhibitors, antistaphylococcal regimens and other doctor-prescribed interventions may be necessary, and your friendly neighborhood dermatologist is happy to assist. In extreme cases, an extremely exciting new intervention (dupilumab) is advisable for the truly miserable eczema sufferer.

The average annual humidity at the North Pole is 65%, so as long as Santa doesn’t turn the heat on, the air at least starts out moist. Unfortunately, if one of those elves gets tired of working in the cold, heating the workshop will quickly cause the humidity inside to drop, so you can bet Santa has a humidifier or two hard at work during the coldest months, which incidentally (at the North Pole) is all of them except June and July.

Eye pain often occurs for those who have been diagnosed with acute angle-

closure glaucoma. The rapid onset of severe eye pain can also be associated with headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

Red eyes can affect patients with chronic angle-closure glaucoma, usually from a chronic use of eye drops to help alleviate vision blurring and other side effects that can be caused by glaucoma.

To combat glaucoma, make sure you or your older loved one has a comprehensive dilated eye exam. Raiders remain atop region with win over Johns Creek

By ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The first time Alpharetta and Johns Creek girls faced off this season, the Raiders slipped past in the final seconds with a win.

With Alpharetta in first place in the region and Johns Creek one game behind, their second and final matchup of the regular season was sure to be one of the most anticipated and most important games of the year.

Alpharetta got off to a hot start on its home court with junior Mary-Grace Durham setting the pace. The do-it-all forward posted 11 points in the first quarter, giving the Raiders an early 16-6 lead.

With Durham on the bench for most of the second quarter due to foul trouble, the Gladiators managed to narrow the deficit to five points at the half.

Johns Creek continued cutting into the Raiders’ lead in second half, and halfway through the third quarter, the Gladiators tied the game for the first time. The surge was short-lived, however.

After Johns Creek freshman Nylah Nuri tied the game at 33-33 with two free throws, Alpharetta quickly scored five points to make it a 38-33 game. The Raiders finished the third quarter leading 46-41.

In the fourth quarter, the Raiders managed to hold off the tiring Gladiators while building on their lead before the final buzzer rang.

Johns Creek junior Carson Tanguilig finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, and Nuri finished with 13 points.

The loss moves the Gladiators to 9-3 in region play and third in the region standings. Two of their three losses in region play came to Alpharetta, with the other coming to Pope which sits in fourth place in the region.

Durham posted a double-double in the victory for Alpharetta with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jodi Goins, whom head coach Rickey Jordan referred to as a “bulldog” with a “nose for the ball,” also had 11 rebounds in addition to 17 points.

With the win over Johns Creek, the Raiders improve to 11-1 in region play under their first-year head coach and remain atop the region standings.

“It’s big,” Jordan said. “A lot of people in the region are playing really well right now. When it comes time for the region tournament, we want to finish No. 1 outright so we get a buy-in to the semifinals. And from there we’re going to play a tough region in the state playoffs, so we have to fight for position.”

Gladiators mount double-digit comeback to defeat Raiders

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Johns Creek boys basketball left the Alpharetta gym Saturday night with a 13-point victory after trailing the Raiders by as many as 14 points in the third quarter.

The Gladiators entered the contest the favorites, but the Raiders bucked expectations and took a demanding lead early in the first quarter.

Alpharetta senior Jayden Stephens began filling the stat sheet with 11 points, four rebounds and one assist, and junior Malachi Chipp hit a threepointer at the buzzer to put the Raiders up 19-9 after one quarter.

In the second frame, Stephens picked up where he left off, and the Raiders kept the lead entering halftime. Stephens ended the half with 19 points, seven rebounds and one assist, and the underdog Raiders led 34-28 over the Gladiators.

As the second half began, it ap-

peared that Alpharetta was going to cruise to an upset victory over one of the top teams in the region. That changed midway through the third quarter, when Johns, trailing 50-36, went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to three.

Junior guard Steven Lyles, who began the game on the bench, drilled three consecutive three-pointers to power the run at the end of the quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, L yles gave the Gladiators their first lead of the night with a put-back layup.

From that point on they didn’t look back.

Alpharetta’s record fell to 4-17 overall and 3-9 in region play. Stephens’ night ended early, fouling out in the fourth quarter with 30 points and eight rebounds for the Raiders.

With star point guard Jordan Johnson (six points and one rebound) in foul trouble much of the game, Lyles came up in clutch fashion off the bench for the Gladiators. Lyles finished with 30 points and four rebounds, and

seniors Chase McKey and Nick Willis added 18 points and 15 points, respectively.

“Steven [Lyles] came in and just played his tail off,” Johns Creek head coach Keenan Temple said. “He put us on his shoulders and brought us back.

Jordan [Johnson] got in foul trouble, and Steven came in and basically saved the day.”

The come-from-behind win puts Johns Creek at 14-6 overall and 8-4 region play. The Gladiators are near the top of the Region 7-6A standings, trailing first-place Chattahoochee and Cambridge by one game.

While Temple sees the potential his team has, he is far from satisfied.

“The biggest message is that we can’t take anybody for granted,” Temple said.

“We have to come out from the beginning and do what we do. If we do that, then the games are a lot more fun. I told our guys we got a target on our back now, so we have to wake up and be ready to play four quarters — not just a quarter and a half.”

Dewey defeats bookstores in Fulton, Forsyth counties

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A move by Gwinnett County Public Libraries to rearrange its collections to a new system is creating a buzz in surrounding libraries.

Earlier this month Gwinnett County replaced the traditional Dewey Decimal System for cataloguing in favor of a “bookstore” arrangement that mimics retailers like Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

The county says the change should make it easier to find and check out books.

Libraries in Gwinnett shut down for three days as employees made some of the changes.

“As far as the relabeling project, we didn’t do everything in those three days, but we did relabel all the adult nonfiction,” Charles Pace, Gwinnett County Public Library executive director, said.

“We were highly organized and had excellent teamwork.”

The Dewey Decimal System has been in use at public libraries for close to 150 years. It uses three-digit Arabic numerals to denote main classes, with fractional decimals for each book.

Anna Lyle, Forsyth County Public Library director, said the county’s four library branches will continue using the

Dewey Decimal System.

“We have no plans to switch,” she said.

The new system is not a new thing in the library world.

“It’s been talked about for many years,” she said.

Forsyth is not alone.

“We have been noticing a growing trend across the country to move from Dewey to a more bookstore-style way of presenting materials,” said Gayle Holloman executive director of the AtlantaFulton County Library System said. “We continue to watch how this new presentation style is received by the public.”

For now, Holloman said, the main focus is completion of the Library Renovation Project at Fulton County and re-opening 11 libraries in 2020.

“Dewey will continue to be our main way of displaying materials,” she said.

“However, with our renovations come more opportunities for displaying materials in ways that are both interesting and engaging for our patrons.”

Dewey Decimal Classification, or as its more commonly called, Dewey Decimal System is a system for organizing the contents of a library based on subject.
