Police K9 dies of complications from dental procedure ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta Police Department announced “with great sadness” that Karlo, a 6-year-old German shepherd, died unexpectedly Dec. 29.

Department officials shared the sad news on their social media pages Dec. 29, revealing that Karlo suffered an allergic reaction to anesthesia during a teeth cleaning.

Karlo began his stint with Alpharetta’s canine ranks in February 2014. His handler was Lt. Ronald Splawn.

“The doctor’s office did everything they could to save Karlo but he did not

PUBLIC SAFETY survive,” the post stated. “We are very thankful for K9 Karlo and are our hearts are with Lt. Splawn.”

Nearly 200 people expressed condolences on the department’s Facebook page.

The Roswell Police Department also shared the post with sympathies for Karlo’s loss.

“The men and women of the Roswell Police Department join the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety in mourning the sudden loss of K9 Karlo,” the agency stated.

Burglar removes window to gain entry to liquor store ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta police responded to a commercial burglary at the Old Milton Beverage liquor store along Old Milton Parkway on Dec. 22.

According to the incident report, a glass window pane next to the front door had been pushed out. Security cams

showed a suspect using tools to remove weather stripping around the pane. The burglar then pushed the glass pane out of the way and crawled military style into the building. The suspect crawled to each register, removing $430 in cash from each one, stole $2,000 from a cash box, and another $500 from a coin box.

The suspect stole cigarette cartons and cigarillos near the register, then crawled to the manager’s office. There the offender picked the lock to the office and stole $14,367 in cash then crawled to the front of the store and loaded liquor bottles into a bag. The suspect then stood up, ran to grab another box of cigarettes and more cigarillos, then exited the building through the window pane, the report stated.

The owner said $17,727 in cash and at least $3,032 worth of inventory was stolen. Investigators were unable to identify the suspect, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt tightly drawn around their face to the point only their eyes could be seen.

FBI warns of coronavirus vaccine scams

By TIFFANY GRIFFITH newsroom@appenmediagroup.com NORTH ATLANTA METRO, Ga. — While scientific minds have been hard at work on a coronavirus remedy, more nefarious minds have been looking for ways to profit off of it. Now, multiple federal agencies are putting out the warning about vaccine scams.

The method of the scam isn’t new – getting contact details off of the internet and enticing victims via emails, social media, and cell phones. However, FBI agents warn, what is new is that bad entities are taking advantage of the national need for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Kevin Rowson, Public Affairs specialist for the FBI Atlanta Field Office, said scammers are always on the lookout for the latest world event to take advantage of.

“They know people are vulnerable, and in this particular case with the COVID vaccines, they’re going to meet people who want to know when they can get it as soon as possible” Rowson said.

“And that’s what they’re trying to take advantage of.”

Their tactics are deceiving. In midDecember, federal agents busted two fraudulent websites, using similar names, logos and graphics of actual companies, and attempting to steal personal information from consumers.

“If anybody calls you and offers you testing or offers you to get in line for testing, and they want you to pay money – anybody that calls you about this, just ignore it,” Rowson said. “They can send you emails that look legitimately from one of your bill payees. But, if you talk to whoever you pay bills to, to law enforcement, or your banks, they will never call you or email you for that kind of information.”

More cash scams include offers to be placed on a vaccine waiting list, have shipments of the vaccine sold and delivered nationally or internationally, and deals for additional medical testing or procedures with the vaccine.

Rowson said the end game is to make

money off of your personal information, so be wary.

“They’re selling it or using it themselves. There’s a market out there for it,” Rowson said. “There’s a number of things people can do with your personal information, particularly your Social Security number.”

Georgia is home to both the scammers and the scammed. In 2019, the Internet Crime Complaint Center reported over 9,000 fraud victims in the Peach State – the 13th highest in the nation. Georgia victims lost close to $80,000,000 in total. In 2019, the complaint center also counted 3,325 scammers in Georgia – the 8th highest number in the U.S., who took $55,338,192 from consumers.

First in line for COVID-19 vaccine, physicians urge continued vigilance Milton is A LOOK AHEAD

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — While COVID vaccine distribution continues to roll out across the state, healthcare experts are cautioning this is no time to let up.

The warning comes as Gov. Brian Kemp outlined the second phase of vaccine rollout to long-term care facilities.

Speaking at a press conference Dec. 28 in Gainesville, Kemp said sections of the state continue to see a spike in COVID cases, and he urged all Georgians to remain vigilant.

“COVID-19 is still here, and it still presents a threat to the people of our great state,” Kemp said. The state is working to set up temporary facilities at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta to help relieve patient surges at hospitals, he said.

Meanwhile, local healthcare workers have been lining up to receive their vaccinations to continue their frontline service.

Dr. Lori Randall, a physician with Ravry Medical Group in Sandy Springs, said she received the Moderna vaccine Dec. 29, and she expects to receive the second dose in about four weeks.

Randall is part of the Northside Hospital System and was notified through email of her eligibility.

The Roswell resident is a general practitioner at Ravry and treats an array of ailments. Right now, she said, the practice is handling clients with COVID or who have exposure to the virus through telemed. The vast majority of all other patients are seen in person,

with staff and visitors donning masks.

“I do think the universal masking in healthcare that kicked in maybe a couple of weeks into the pandemic, that definitely helped a ton,” Randall said. “The non-urgent healthcare places that were staying open early on where masking was not universal were having some issues with patients and healthcare workers getting infected, but that has gotten a lot better.”

Randall said Ravry has had no issues with patients or staff contracting the virus, although they do offer telemed to patients who want to exercise added caution.

Receiving the vaccine has not moved her to let her guard down.

She said there are countless reasons to continue safety protocols even after vaccination.

While both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are effective, 95 percent is not perfect, she said.

“If healthcare workers are unmasked, then up to 5 percent of us could end up getting symptomatic COVID infection,” she said.

A bigger issue, Randall said, is that there is no data on whether those vaccinated can transmit the virus. Best estimates now are that when 70 percent of the population is vaccinated, the risk of transmission will fall dramatically, she said.

Her family will have to wait for their turn.

“For now, I have boys that are 3 and 5, I have a husband that works from home…and for us, in terms of getting back to normal, doing the things we

miss, it’s going to be a while.”

Dr. Asma Agad, a certified nurse anesthetist with Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sandy Springs, was part of a team of specialists who prepared the Pfiser vaccine for distribution to healthcare workers. The Alpharetta resident received her vaccine last week.

Agad said Emory had set up an efficient system composed of certified professionals for unpacking, preparing and administering the vaccine.

The product, which must be kept at or below -76 F, first must be thawed, then diluted before being administered. The whole process, following thawing, can take no more than six hours, Agad said.

She estimates Emory Hospital System was performing more than 2,000 vaccinations a day, running from early morning into the evening.

“My fear is people are assuming that with the vaccine, you don’t have to wear a mask, you still don’t have to do the precautions,” Agad said. “But the vaccine is only 95 percent effective, and you can still get COVID with the vaccine. I think the public should be educated about that.”

By the time the vaccine rolls out for general distribution, she said, she hopes everyone will be on board with continuing the safety protocols.

“I’ve had people ask me why do you still wear a mask?” she said. “Well, I’ve only gotten the one dose, and I could still get COVID, and I could still pass it easily to you. I don’t want people to get the vaccine and feel like [they] don’t need to wash hands or wear a mask.”

METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — Residents of senior living facilities are stepping up for the first round of COVID-19 vaccine.

The Village Park Senior Living and Corso Atlanta communities were among the first in Georgia to receive the vaccines.

More than 95 percent of the residents in Galerie Living communities in Alpharetta, Milton and Peachtree Corners opted to receive the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

Village Park Peachtree Corners was the first, with distribution on Dec. 23. Marketing Director Emily Hamrin said residents felt relieved and hopeful.

As its name implies, this has a large, inclusive scope touching on what city government now oversees and exploring what more it can do (like, hypothetically, new parks, recycling options or bike lanes). The idea is to imagine what Milton should look and feel like in two decades, then match policies, projects and priorities to turn that vision into reality. We’re urging people to share their thoughts at www.cityofmiltonga.us/engagement and participate in upcoming forums, knowing public involvement is critical to the 2040 Plan’s success.

These plans update previous iterations and demonstrate Milton’s deliberate approach as evidenced by our conservative budgeting and methodical buildout since our 2006 incorporation.

We are determined to remain smart and true to our identity while staying ahead of the curve (so we don’t fall behind and lose what makes Milton special).

Even amid this pandemic, we’ll work hard in 2021 to accentuate what many residents value most about Milton: our natural beauty and rural heritage. Providence Park should soon get a new ADAaccessible trail, bathrooms and pier. In addition to renovating the clubhouse for recreation programming, we hope to build a trail through the “passive” part

Coffee shop looks to add location in tough year for small businesses

By PHOEBE LIU newsroom@Appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A soft hum of activity from lively music, warm lighting and whirring coffee machines sets the scene.

On the wall is a menu that includes items named “GA 400 Blend,” “Snowpocalypse” and “Downtown Connector.”

It’s clear you’re in a coffee shop for the community.

Although many small businesses have closed or otherwise cut operations in 2020 due to the pandemic, Peach Coffee Roasters, a cafe and roastery in Johns Creek, has continued to engage with residents and organizations through its quality coffee.

Peach Coffee Roasters, located at 10875 Jones Bridge Road, is the only Georgia coffee shop to have one of its coffees selected as a finalist for the 2021 Good Food Awards, which takes place later this month. The small business has also continued to partner with organizations — including the Atlanta Humane Society, the Howard School and the Drake House — that share their community-giving mindset. A second location, in Alpharetta’s Henderson Commons Shopping Center, is underway pending rezoning to allow for a drive-through.

“We want to meet people where they are,” co-founder David Pittman said. “We invest in the community, and when the pandemic hit, the community invested in us. There’s going to be good times and bad times for all of us. When COVID hit, there was a call to help small businesses, and the community has been nothing short of amazing.”

The shop’s Good Food Awards finalist is its Costa Rica Cordillera de Fuego coffee, which it purchases from Costa Rican coffee farmer Luis Eduardo Campos.

Peach Coffee Roasters is a Johns Creek-based cafe and roastery that opened in 2018.

According to Pittman, who previously served in the military and worked for several other Atlanta coffee shops, Peach Coffee Roasters’ goal when choosing and roasting coffee beans is to pick the green, or unroasted, coffee that highlights specific countries or regions. The shop purchases beans from countries including Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Ethiopia.

“We want to create coffee that we believe represents the origin of where it came from and something that the consumer can resonate with,” Pittman said.

When Peach Coffee Roasters’ team, which includes Pittman, co-founder Landon Bonner and a team of coffeegrading staff, was trying out coffee from Costa Rica, they’d gotten through 30–40 samples when they hit one — Campos’ Costa Rican coffee — that they just knew was a special coffee, Pittman said.

Pittman and Bonner are Q Graders, those certified to be able to grade and score coffee through smell and taste.

There are only 400 Q Graders in the United States.

coffee stood out because it had a fruitiness, silkiness, sweetness and complexity that “creates a sensory experience where everything just came together,” Pittman said.

Once the team selects coffee beans, team members develop a complex, formulaic method of roasting the beans based on each coffee’s unique attributes.

Pittman said the roasting process, which takes around 10 minutes, is analogous in some ways to caramelizing sugar.

Although several coffees created by Peach Coffee Roasters have won local and national awards, Pittman said the business “doesn’t get their validation from the coffee” but from “how we treat people and how we treat customers.”

Peach Coffee Roasters hires and serves on seven core values that spell out the acronym “PEACHES.” In addition to goals around environmental and social responsibility, one of the business’ key values is community involvement.

Even as the pandemic has isolated most, Peach Coffee Roasters has continued to partner with community organizations. Each month, the coffee shop donates to a local cause. For December, 3 percent of sales went to the Atlanta Humane Society. And 1 percent of the shop’s 2020 proceeds will go to the conservation group Chattahoochee Riverkeeper.

Pittman said Peach Coffee Roasters does what it can to help the community, and the community has helped them get through the pandemic.

This month, the Alpharetta Planning Commission will consider the Peach Coffee Roasters drive-through proposal in that city.

McDonald continuing lineage of successful Milton running backs

By ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Over the past decade, Milton High School has made a strong claim as the “Running Back University” of Georgia high school football. Perhaps the more appropriate moniker would be Running Back High School, but that’s just semantics.

Prior to the 2020 season, SCORE Atlanta gave Milton the moniker of RBU, the top school for running backs in the state in recent memory.

The list of Milton running backs since 2010 who went on to play college football includes Treyvon Paulk (’14, Tennessee), Micco Brisker (’15, Lehigh), Chris Turner (’15, Georgia Tech), Solomon Vanhorse (’18, James Madison), Josh Edwards (’19, Arkansas State) and Ahmad Junearick (’20, Clark-Atlanta).

Most notably, 2013 graduate Peyton Barber played college football at Auburn and now plays in the NFL for the Washington Football Team.

Milton’s success in its ground game is also a family affair. Gary Sylvestri, now the schools’ athletic director, served as the program’s running backs coach before handing over the torch to his son, Vinny.

The RBU signature continued this year with the success of Jordan McDonald, who racked up 1,500 all-purpose yards and 27 touchdowns in 11 games for the Eagles. with the success of Jordan McDonald, who racked up 1,500 all-purpose yards and 27 touchdowns in 11 games for the Eagles.

McDonald, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound junior, has coaches and fans gushing over what he’s already accomplished and salivating over what might come next for the bruising running back.

Teammates compare him to NFL star and 2015 Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry. Milton running backs coach Vinny Sylvestri described the back as a “once in a decade, once in a lifetime type of a player.”

“I don’t know how he’s going to get better next year, but somehow he’ll manage,” Sylvestri said. “It’s going to be exciting to watch.”

As a sophomore in 2019, McDonald showed flashes of what might come once he eventually took over as Milton’s feature running back. McDonald rushed for 523 yards and 10 touchdowns behind Junearick, the Eagles’ starter, who rushed for just over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior.

Coaches and those around the program saw what McDonald did as a sophomore and expected big things from him in his junior year. Prior to the 2020 season, Milton head coach Adam Clack called McDonald “one of the best kept secrets in the state.”

While that might have been true at one point, the secret is officially out.

McDonald was the offensive leader of a 2020 Milton team that finished 11-1, won its third consecutive region title and made it to the 7A quarterfinals. The junior was voted co-offensive player of the year in Region 5-AAAAAAA following a shortened season in which he rushed for 1,388 yards and 25 touchdowns.

McDonald said he worked hard and envisioned the success he had this season, but seeing it come to fruition was “eye opening” and provided a huge confidence boost.

His success combined with his attitude helped him evolve into one of the Eagles’ leaders during the 2020 season.

His teammates respect him and view him as a leader, so much they made him a team captain halfway through the season.

At the team’s Sunday meetings during the season, the player who scored the final touchdown of the last game was obliged to give a speech to the rest of the team. For McDonald, who averaged 2.25

touchdowns per game, this meant speaking in front of the team practically every Sunday. And according to Sylvestri, he handled the duty like a professional.

“Every time he got up and spoke I legit thought I was listening to like a CEO of a Fortune 500 company,” Sylvestri said. “He speaks so well. He is so intelligent. He’s probably one of the smartest kids on the team. Just the way he carries himself is very mature, especially for his age, and I think that’s what’s going to really help him grow.”

There’s no doubt McDonald will be playing on Saturdays in the future. The only question remaining is which school the running back will choose to attend.

McDonald earned offers from Florida State, Georgia Tech, LSU, Tennessee and more prior to his standout junior season.

With the pandemic putting a squeeze on recruiting and scholarship numbers for college programs, McDonald still managed to add six offers, including two from teams ranked in the top 25 this season in Indiana and Liberty, since July. On Dec. 18, he received his most recent offer from Jackson State University and its new head coach Deion Sanders.

McDonald, a 2022 graduate, said he has no timeline in mind when it comes to his recruitment. He does know he wants to put the rest of the state and country on notice and keep solidifying Milton’s “RBU” legacy.

“I want to separate myself from the pack nationally,” McDonald said, “I want to be one of the people when you think of Georgia, my name is one of the first you think of. And I want to keep helping put Milton on the map as a perennial powerhouse.”

A look back and a look forward Longing for the old Brandon Beach Some have said that 2020 felt like it lasted for a decade.

And, in many ways, this rang true for the Milton Police Department. But as chief, I could not be prouder of the MPD’s exceptional RICH AUSTIN men and women Milton police chief and how they handled the multiple challenges that were unprecedented in our profession. Also, the response by our fellow city staff, elected officials, and especially Milton’s citizens, reinforced what a special community we share.

As with everyone and everything in 2020, COVID-19 impacted us at the MPD. Yet while we set up our civilian office staff to work from home (at least partially), our patrol officers and detectives remained full force on duty to ensure our citizens’ seamless access to police services. Notably, the call volume dipped significantly at the initial lockdown’s height, and citizens were very altruistic and considerate when faced with changing protocols.

And the pandemic affected our team personally, despite our taking recommended precautions, as several MPD employees (both sworn and civilian) contracted the dreaded virus. Fortunately, none required hospitalization, and the cases were spread far enough apart that it did not affect operations significantly.

One of our biggest challenges (which ran concurrently with the COVID-19 pandemic) was national scrutiny about policing. Amid the initial outcry for criminal justice reforms following George Floyd’s horrific death, the MPD was caught up in waves of broad-brush criticism of police officers.

This is the crown jewel of our “greenspaces” — made possible by voters — that we’ll open more and more to the public.

We will also explore equestrian zoning and other changes to help preserve the rolling pastures, wooded lots and bucolic settings that distinguish our city. Where building does occur, we’ll take pains to ensure its appearance properly reflects Milton. You see that in what’s going up around Crabapple.

And, like our new Public Safety Complex, even the rebuilt Fire Station 42

that our department already utilized (and continues to employ) the best practices that many reformers were calling for. This national conversation turned into an opportunity for our department to connect with many people and to provide information about what we do daily to keep our citizens safe in a procedurally just manner. We also listened to — and, in some cases, implemented — suggestions from our community. One was to develop a Chief’s Advisory Board to help ensure I hear consistently and honestly from all facets of our community. This group has met monthly to discuss new, innovative ways for the MPD to fulfil our mission for all. And the group is a great forum to present ideas for service and engagement. I’m very appreciative of the work this group has done so far and so excited about what we will do together in 2021.

And in looking forward to 2021, the MPD is eager to pursue innovative ways to engage our citizens during this pandemic. Absent large face-to-face events, this will mean enhanced virtual interactions. And we’re also excited for the end of the pandemic when we can finally fully invite our citizens to our new Public Safety Complex (which, by the way, opened last August on time and on budget thanks to the diligent work of many throughout our city). Our department is also preparing in 2021 to renew our national certification.

While long and arduous, this certification process ensures that we continue to utilize national best practices in policing.

In closing, I’d like to thank our citizens for their support during this very difficult year. It means more than you know. We look forward to continuing in service in 2021, doing our part to keep Milton once of Georgia’s safest cities.

Ironically, Milton’s greatness makes our challenges greater. People want to live here because it’s a warm, familyfriendly, picturesque place that’s not cookie cutter or overrun by development. We cannot lose that.

That’s why we’ll evolve while embracing what makes us unique. That’s why we’ll pass on allowing just any development, and instead take a more conscientious, measured approach.

That’s why we will come together as a community to do what’s best for all of Milton.

Our city is committed to charting our own path. And I’m excited for the journey.

When I was 8 years old, I saved up about $150 to buy one of my dad’s newspaper boxes from him, one of those heavy metal boxes that you’d put 50 cents in and buy a newsHANS APPEN paper. Our deal Publisher hans@appenmediagroup.com was that if I saved up enough money to buy one, kept it clean and stocked it myself, then he would give me the newspapers to stock it for free. Once I’d sold 300 newspapers, I’d be making a profit.

Instead of selling lemonade, I’d sell newspapers, just like my dad.

Once I saved up enough money to buy a box, the question then became where to put it. I needed to find a place with plenty of foot traffic, close enough to ride my bike to, that had an owner that would help me keep an eye on it.

My dad knew just the place.

I remember walking into a sandwich shop across from Alpharetta City Hall with him to ask the owner for permission to put my box outside his restaurant.

The restaurant was called Nantucket and the owner’s name was Brandon Beach.

Brandon was an Alpharetta City Councilman back before Alpharetta was Alpharetta. He’d go on to run the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce for over a decade and most recently was elected to the State Senate and is chair of the influential Transportation Committee.

I went off to college, and my little newspaper box is long gone. We still have some scattered around town, but Nantucket, the old City Hall and Alpharetta’s quiet downtown are long gone, too.

I came back home to work in our family newspaper company, and Brandon and I have crossed paths many times since. I’ve gotten to know him outside of the context of the man who owned the restaurant my newspaper box stood in front of.

I have admired many of Brandon’s accomplishments, his tireless work ethic, and his good-natured spirit. He is a people person.

Under the Gold Dome, he is known to be an effective legislator. He is the type of person who knows how to get a bill passed and is a bit of a wonk when it comes to anything involving transportation and infrastructure

The Brandon I know embraces the hard thing, because he is a bayou bulldog, and tough is what he does. improvements. He was into transportation projects as a way to develop local economies before it was cool.

If you’d have asked me two months ago to put my money on someone who could help rebuild and lead a Georgia Republican caucus that had just seen its state elect a Democrat for president for the first time since 1992, I’d have put my money on Brandon.

But since November 3, I don’t recognize the official Senator Beach has become.

He seems to have swallowed the “election was rigged” narrative hook, line and sinker. He has railed against our Secretary of State, who to his credit ran the most seamless Georgia election of my lifetime — in a pandemic no less.

Incidentally, Brandon has been a champion for the voting rights of his constituents. He helped secure expanded early voting hours and locations for his district and has always preached the importance of early voting.

The Brandon I know would recognize the accomplishments of Secretary Raffensperger and be the first to condemn the threats of violence against him and his family.

Instead, in recent weeks we have seen him parrot the talking points of the conspiracy fringes of the Republican Party, welcome a lawsuit from Texas aimed at his own state and call for official inquiries into fraud that does not exist — stoking dangerous fires that do nothing more than cost the taxpayer millions of dollars and sow doubt in the sanctity of our elections.

The easy thing to do right now is recognize the attacks and step out of the way.

The Brandon I know told 8-yearold me not to worry about my little newspaper box in front of his sandwich shop. He told me he’d keep an eye on it for me and ward off the vandals.

Local legislators serve up priorities for 2021 session

By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Gold Dome will be flush with issues when the 156th Georgia General Assembly gavels in for a 40-day session on Jan. 11.

Among the key matters legislators will address this session are whether to restore $2.2 billion in cuts to the fiscal year 2021 budget.

The $25.9 billion budget signed by Gov. Brian Kemp in August represented the steepest cuts the state has imposed since the height of the Great Recession.

About $1 billion in funding was cut from schools and the Georgia Department of Education.

Later this year, the Legislature will take up redistricting — redrawing state and federal legislative districts — after the 2020 Census data is available. By controlling both chambers in the assembly, Republicans will have the upper hand in how districts are redrawn. Kari Samuelson, chief operating officer, said they are hopeful that after the second vaccination is administered, 21 to 28 days after the first dose, they will be able to change some of the policies for vaccinated residents.

“We do anticipate that it will provide more freedom for residents that have had the vaccine,” Samuelson said. “In general, our hope is to turn to the most normal sense that we can, and we’re just waiting for the CDC and Department of Health to tell us the best and the most safe way to do that.”

Staff at Galerie Living communities have the option to receive the vaccine but are not required to. Samuelson said that as time goes on, they will determine when they will require staff to be vaccinated.

Charles Platz, president of Managed Health Solutions pharmacy services, said they were pleased to be able to administer the vaccine to the senior communities and are already planning to vaccinate other local retirement homes.

She said she is concerned that the spread of misinformation and conspiracies will have a lasting impact on future state elections.

Rep. Angelika Kausche (D-Johns Creek) said she is worried about small business recovery in her district, unemployment, children returning safely back to school and healthcare access for 600,000 uninsured Georgians. The most pressing issue for the assembly is

addressing budget concerns.

“The hot topic should be revenue and the budget,” Kausche said. “We cannot cut ourselves out of this crisis. We need to have a plan for sustainable state revenue in the future.”

Kausche said to prevent future budget cuts, legislators could increase taxes on tobacco and vaping products. She fears political hype over election fraud allegations will sidetrack the budget formulation.

Kausche, who is a German immigrant, said changes to voting law without reason is troubling.

“It really concerns me because I come from a country that has a terrible history of disenfranchising groups of people for all the wrong reasons,” she said.

Rep. Josh McLaurin (D-Sandy Springs) is directing attention on affordable housing, increasing job opportunities and restoring funding to the budget. The prison system is of particular concern.

“The prisons were some of the hardest hit facilities in this past round of budgeting, for a lot of people it’s out of sight out of mind,” McLaurin said. “Right now, Georgia’s prisons appear to be so understaffed that every day there are basic security concerns.”
