MILTON, Ga. — A man fell victim to a scam and lost over $2,000 after he received a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS. The caller told the man his Social Security number had been compromised, and he needed to purchase gift cards to ensure no funds were taken from his bank account. The caller stayed on the phone with the victim while he went to Kroger and Target

MILTON, Ga. — Milton Police are looking for a hit and run driver after the car she was driving struck another vehicle in the Walmart parking lot Dec. 20.

The victim said she was stopped at a stop sign on an access road near the store when her car was struck from behind. She told police a woman from the passenger seat of the car that struck her said she was the owner of the vehicle and gave her name and insurance provider. The victim said the woman then told her the driver of the car had a warrant for her arrest. She got back into the car and left the scene without giving the victim her full insurance information.

The woman took down the license plate number of the car which was registered to a woman from Cumming.

Surveillance footage reveals toy theft MILTON, Ga. — Video surveillance showed an unknown man take several Lego sets and hoverboards from the Milton Walmart on Dec. 21 without paying.

An employee showed police video of the incident in which the man entered the store just after 11 p.m. He then placed 10 Lego sets and six hoverboards in two shopping carts and left the store through an emergency exit near the

stores and purchased a total of $2,200 worth of eBay gift cards.

The caller then told the man to read off the serial numbers from the cards and said two IRS officers would come to his house and give him back the funds through a “digital wallet.”

The victim later realized he had been scammed and called the number back, but the number had been disconnected.

Once out of the store, the suspect is seen being by the car that dropped him off, a dark green or blue Toyota Rav4, and the suspect and driver load the items into the car before driving away. The items taken were valued at over $1,600.

The man said his parents had left for New York the day before, and two people he did not know well had stayed at his house the previous night and had left around 11 a.m. The victim did not know the last names of the man and woman, and he was unable to contact them through a social media app.

Police seek group suspected Car not returned of second theft from store following test drive MILTON, Ga. — Three women who allegedly stole merchandise from the CVS on Ga. 9 in Milton were accused by store employees of taking items again on Dec. 22.

An employee called police Dec. 22 stating the women had placed items in bags they brought into the store and left without paying. One worker said he asked one of the women if she had a receipt for the merchandise as she walked out of the store, and the woman ignored his question.

A supervisor said he recognized the women from a similar incident that took place at the store in November.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell Police are searching for two men who took a car for a test drive and did not return to the dealership.

On Dec. 18, an employee at SMZ Auto Import said the two suspects requested to test drive a 2002 Lexus SC430. One of the men gave provided the dealer with his ID and phone number, but the other man’s identity was not known to the dealership’s employees.

A worker attempted to call the suspect several times, but he said the number was blocked.

Insulin supply stolen from charity volunteer

MILTON, Ga. — A Milton man reported to police Dec. 22 that his home had been burglarized while he was at work.

The man said he left for work around noon and returned 9:30 p.m. When he returned home, he noticed the blinds for his kitchen window had been tampered with and a kitchen table chair was askew. After searching his home, the victim told police that three TVs, a MacBook laptop, Xbox controller and presents that were under his Christmas tree had been taken.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A Roswell man lost his wallet, his credit cards and his supply of insulin to a thief while working at a charity event on North Point Circle Dec. 14.

Police said the victim stated that while working the event he had placed his tan bag containing the items on a chair early that afternoon. When he returned about an hour later, someone had taken it. The man, who is insulin dependent, said the bag contained two insulin shots worth $250 and his wallet which contained his driver’s license and credit cards.

Milton hires firm New state laws boost education deduction, alter medical protocols to explore more

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed more than 300 bills into law in 2019, and many went into effect Jan. 1.

Back in April, the governor signed 21 bills into law that went into effect July 1. Those new laws covered issues from human trafficking to flag displays.

The latest series of new laws run the gamut from expanding deductions for college savings plans to narrowing the criteria for those placed on the child abuse registry.

Here’s a rundown of some of the new laws that went into effect Jan. 1: HB 166 establishes licensing requirements for genetic counselors. The law mandates continuing education for these professionals who create treatment plans for individuals or families affected by or at risk of genetic disorders.

HB 478 sets stricter requirements to

list someone on the state’s child abuse registry. Abusers can now only be listed if they are 18 years old. Formerly, those as young as 13 could be listed. The process for having a review hearing before being added to the list or having a name expunged has also been updated.

HB 266 doubles the tax-deductible contribution you can make to a 529 savings plan from $2,000 to $4,000 per child if you’re a single taxpayer and from $4,000 to $8,000 per year if you file jointly with a spouse.

HB 182 requires remote sellers and online retailers to collect and submit state and local sales taxes if they exceed $100,000 in Georgia gross revenue. Studies estimate the state could realize up to $3.9 million in annual tax revenue from the new law.

HB 63 provides doctors a way around what is commonly referred to as “step therapy,” a protocol contained in health insurance plans that requires physicians to try certain preferred

medications first and have those drugs fail before moving on to a medication that might be more suitable for the condition. The law now gives doctors a way to apply for exceptions to avoid step therapy and quickly start patients on the medication they recommend.

HB 288 establishes flat, predictable and in most cases higher fees that clerks of the superior courts are entitled to charge for filing documents and instruments pertaining to real estate or personal property. It also provides for a flat sum structure, a repeal of certain related alternative fees and a repeal or provisions related to additional fees and costs in counties having a certain sized population.

HB 507 revises the criteria used by tax assessors to determine the fair market value of real property. Tax assessors now shall apply the existing zoning, use, covenants or restrictions, bank sales, and rent limitations in determining the fair market value.

Transportation often conjures negative images for residents of North Fulton. Whether we’re sitting in traffic or attempting to navigate busy roads, our daily travels are often a challenge.

In 2019, your elected officials and city staff have worked hard to improve your experience navigating the roads here in Milton. We will continue those efforts in 2020.

Our new traffic circles have notably improved traffic flow throughout Milton, including the recently completed traffic circle at Freemanville Road and Providence Road. Leveraging TSPLOST dollars, we will continue to make improvements in the coming year.

Our much-anticipated Charlotte Drive extension will be completed in early 2020 and is expected to reduce traffic congestion in our downtown.

Additional TSPLOST projects that

will begin construction in 2020 include major improvements along Hopewell Road — traffic circles will be constructed at Hopewell Road and Hamby Road, Hopewell Road and Thompson Road, Hopewell Road and Bethany Bend. These enhancements, along with operational improvements made at Bethany Way and Bethany Oaks Pointe, will work to ease traffic flow in the area.

In addition to addressing the challenges associated with traffic congestion, we will be seeking to improve traffic safety on our roads. Beginning in 2020, the City of Milton will be conducting a citywide speed limit assessment and the effects that posted speeds have on our community.

Milton’s equestrian and agricultural heritage is extremely important to our residents and to the character and economic development of the city, and we firmly believe that it must be preserved and enhanced. Here are some ways Milton has been working to achieve that goal: • Assessing the current and future needs of the equestrian and agricultural community • Exploring best practices to promote equestrian uses

• Drafting and working to amend regulations to encourage the preservation of equestrian and other agricultural uses.

We will continue to engage residents in our community in order to find ways to better enhance our agricultural operations and protect critical properties from development. The city has already begun to make steps to identify these properties and, with the help of our committed citizens, we will continue to enhance and preserve our rural heritage.

Since 2018, the City of Milton has purchased seven greenspace properties, forever preserving more than 390 acres. This land will be used solely for passive purposes, trails and greenspace, including conservation land, wildlife habitat and natural areas. With $6.1 million remaining in our Greenspace Fund, we will continue to focus on properties that address our citizens’ desires to protect additional land from development.

active park spaces

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton has used its Greenspace Bond to buy and preserve land the last two years. Now it’s turning its attention to active parks.

Last month, the city entered into a $50,000 contract with consultants CH2M Hill to work with landowners to explore possible future park land acquisitions.

The company has already been working with the city for greenspace purchases, but the updated contract also allows research into active park space acquisitions.

The hunt for more active park spaces received a push early in 2019 when Milton and Alpharetta were unable to negotiate a new agreement that allowed Milton residents to participate in Alpharetta parks and recreation programming without having to pay an out of city fee, which can nearly double registration prices in some cases.

With fewer residents going out of the city for programming and a limit on its active park space, Milton officials say there is a need for more sports fields and recreational centers.

The contract with C2HM Hill will last throughout 2020. The company will use the city’s guidelines to seek out park spaces, determine cost estimates and analysis and will present offers to the property owner(s).

Meanwhile, the city is already in the process of adding to its active parks inventory.

In October, the city entered a contract to purchase the United Sports Complex facility on Cox Road. The $1.5 million purchase includes two, full-size grass soccer fields and a half-size turf field, which would double Milton’s cache of multi-purpose fields.

Changes to the active portion of the Milton Country Club property are also in the works after the master plan for the site was approved last summer.

Though future amenities could change, the plan calls for adding two tennis courts, a volleyball court, an all-inclusive playground from Children’s Charities and a renovation to the former clubhouse. Milton recently put out a contract to bid on renovations to the park.

The city recently expanded its recreational programs by kicking off dance classes for kids. The classes will be held Thursdays at Bethwell Community Center and are open to children ages 2- to 8-years old. For more information, visit bit.ly/34NDVu8.

Schools want to work with parents to strike the right kind of ‘balance’ As I look forward to the next year, the word that comes to mind is “balance.”

My three millennial children speak often of the importance of work/life balance as it relates to job choice.

Balance is something we all strive to achieve, including those of us in education. Here in Fulton, like many districts, we are working to find the right balance of accountability and reduced testing.

Most agree that the testing has gotten out of control, mostly from federal and state mandates. Indeed, our board has advocated at the state and national level to address that issue. At the same time, our excellent schools are what drew many to this area to raise their families. We can’t abandon common sense accountability. It is particularly important in a world where comparisons with other world class districts is not only important — it’s expected.

We also struggle to find the right balance in our curriculum. Our graduates are expected to demonstrate that they have the right critical thinking skills to problem-solve for the next generation.

But just as you can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, strong foundational skills mastered at the elementary level allow our students to reach their full potential in middle school and high school.

Speaking of curriculum, parents and students alike have probably noticed our board’s emphasis on Social and Emo-

tional Learning (SEL). One cannot ignore the signs of a community in distress.

Suicides and addiction problems have shaped our conversations. As we seek answers and solutions, we must again remember the importance of balance.

As an educational institution, while we want to provide the resources necessary to weather challenges related to SEL issues, we must also remember that our primary role must be academic. SEL issues are family and community in nature, with the schools supporting the parents and students.

And speaking of balance, you can hardly ignore the elephant in the room — the role technology and social media have played in changing the classroom and our students’ larger world. Technology has changed our world and education in many positive ways. But it has also reportedly contributed to many of the issues related to SEL. Too much screen time, negative social media issues, and a general feeling of isolation are but three of the problems that are commonly mentioned. This is a critical area that I hope our community and district strive to find balance for in the new year. If we believe that too much screen time might be having a negative effect, what are the responsibilities of the school system? What are the things we can model in our own homes to impact it?

So for 2020, I hope we all strive to find the right balance, whether in family or work. I know that as your representative I will continue to ask the questions and seek the best balance for our students and district.

What will you tell the children?

So, every year about this time I am convinced that I’m probably going to have to skip this year’s Christmas/ holiday column because I can’t think of anything positive to say. I have a hard Ray appen time getting past how Publisher Emeritus polarized we have ray@appenmediagroup.com become and all the many horrible events that have been transpiring — the evil, debilitating acts unworthy of humankind.

Every year, however, I ultimately end up remembering this: For every act of hatred, for every evil event, for every unkindness, for every minuscule or massive selfish act — like mass shootings — there are a thousand beacons of light, kindness, courage and grace; we just don’t always see them or hear about them like we do with the bad stuff.

Good intentions are OK. But good acts are better. Action is better than

intention. That’s what our minister Ollie Wagner keeps telling us.

“Don’t just think about doing something to help people, actually do something.” This is one minister who, for the record, practices what he preaches too.

Acts of courage and grace are all around us in the person of your neighbor, your kid’s teacher, your old friend from college, the new person at work or just some complete stranger who is stopping to change a flat tire of a stranger.

Grace is found in those fostering a child, pulling someone out of a burning house, taking in a refugee family, sitting someone’s adult parent with dementia so they can have a couple hour break, reading to someone or just sitting next to a friend or stranger and listening.

My wife Christina is a lot like Ollie; she walks the walk and consistently is coaching me to do the same. And I know and realize that I fall so short on the “do something” spectrum. If I have any goal for 2020, it is going to be become that someone who actually does more. My wife, and my children have taught me 99 percent of what I know that is worth knowing, and how to live as well — and how we should treat others. To them I am so grateful.

There are no small or large acts of grace or courage; they are all the same size — the size of the entire planet, the size of “being alive,” the size of “past the stars.”

Horace Mann once wrote: “Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.”

That victory is achieved every time your attention is focused outward instead of inward, and in some way that makes someone else’s life better or happier or less alone — “past the stars.”

Being kind to one person shines as brightly as the light that comes when thousands are saved.

Grace is color blind and has no nationality. So is the courage to act with grace, too. When Christ said “that what you did not do for the least of these (my children) you did not do for me,” he meant everyone — including those who cross borders out of fear, those who feel helpless, who are hungry, and those who are persecuted. They are all his children and we are expected to help them all.

When we choose not to, we are choosing to separate ourselves from God and his grace.

I watch my wife ask others how they are doing. I hear her ask about their children, their parents, their job — or their job hunt. I watch her take food to them. I see her invite them to eat with the group — day in, day out. There are no large or small acts of grace or kind-

Continued property tax relief is among priorities for 2020

As 2019 comes to an end, I’m pleased to have the opportunity to reflect on a few of Fulton County’s accomplishments during the past year.

There is plenty to be proud of, and I look forward to continuing our momentum throughout the com-

ing year.

Property taxes are an area that affects virtually all Fulton County residents, and I was very pleased that the Board of Commissioners voted to reduce the millage rate for the fourth year in a row. Residents also saw significant tax relief through a cap on property tax increases implemented in 2019. Also, our senior citizens realized additional tax reductions with the expansion of their homestead exemptions.

These changes helped keep the increase in tax bills in check and ease the impact of skyrocketing assessments that reflected improvements in our nation’s economy. Lastly, we resolved property tax litigation with the State Department of Revenue in the favor of Fulton taxpayers.

Efforts to identify additional opportunities for property tax relief will continue in 2020. Among other things, the county will work with the state Legislature to simplify and improve the homestead exemption and appeals process. Plans are also in place to expand educational programs and materials to help property owners better understand the process and protect their homeowner rights. As always, be assured that I will continually

strive to keep more money in the pockets of Fulton County taxpayers.

I believe excellence in customer service is a key component in building citizens’ trust in government. During the past two years, we have expended significant efforts in this area and have made great strides with those initiatives. To date, more than 1,000 front-line employees have received comprehensive training, and we expect the satisfaction rate from citizens will continue to increase.

To consolidate and improve health services in North Fulton, the county recently purchased a spacious facility on North Point Parkway in Alpharetta. When opened in late 2020, the new center will offer convenient, one-stop shopping for those seeking access to health, behavioral health, developmental disabilities, primary care and social services.

The mental and physical health of our youth remains a priority, and I’m pleased we’ve been able to expand our Text 4 Help initiative to all Fulton County high schools and middle schools. The County, as well as several municipalities, have implemented regulations to curb the sale and distribution of vaping products to young people. The county has also increased its drug and alcohol treatment programs for teens and young adults.

Fulton County libraries are vital in north Fulton, and I’m pleased our older libraries will be remodeled and modernized by the end of 2020.

As always, I welcome your feedback and input on ways Fulton County and I can improve our service to you and enhance your quality of life.

Popular radio personality starts new podcast

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Cadillac Jack, the longtime morning host of Kicks 101.5, and his wife, Donna Choate, are gearing up to release the first episode of their new podcast. It’s a new career direction for Jack, who was terminated from the station this summer.

On Jan. 7, the couple will debut their first episode of “Cadillac Jack: My Second Act,” a lifestyle podcast.

“We’ll be talking about things going on in our daily life,” Choate said.

“Current events, parenting, challenges, work-life balance, raising kids — a lot of it is going to be geared towards Northern Atlanta, where we live, but we’re going to be a podcast that anybody can listen to.”

Longtime fans of Cadillac Jack will still hear his sarcasm and storytelling but with no bars or rules, Jack said.

“I’m a southern, sarcastic storyteller,” Jack said. “That was always, internally, my calling card at the radio station. On all three of those elements, we’ll be able to expand much more. Basically, this is my morning show with my best friend, who happens to be my wife.”

The new format will also allow him to be even more transparent in his discussions.

“On the radio, you could be having great conversation that sort of got interrupted by music, or games, or giveaways or commercials,” she said. “And even though it is a podcast, we’re going to incorporate listeners and people. They’ll be able to leave us messages and comment on things we’re talking about.”

The couple said it was a “very, very” easy decision to switch to podcasting.

Jack said he noticed that the medium was gaining traction, especially among radio

stations, where he saw an increase in marketing and stories directing listeners to podcasts.

“Everybody is shifting,” he said.

Choate said podcasts also allow fans to rewind or hear old episodes everywhere, regardless of where they live.

“People would say, ‘I heard your husband talked about something really funny today. Do you know what he said?’” Choate said. “If you missed it, you missed it. But the great thing about what we’re doing now is you can rewind, you can fast forward, if you really loved it you can listen to it two or three times… It really opens it up to everyone to listen.”

Alpharetta welcomes 158-room Home2 Suites

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta’s portfolio of hotels just got bigger with the recent opening of the Home2 Suites by Hilton Alpharetta at 12075 Morris Road.

Dozens of dignitaries and business leaders were on hand for a ribbon cutting Dec. 13, including key executives from Hilton.

The 158-suite hotel developed and owned

by Mitesh Patel of RAM Hotels, provides convenient access to Alpharetta attractions such as the shops and restaurants of Avalon.

RAM Hotels started operations in 2003 and currently owns and operates 23 hospitality properties in Alabama and Georgia. The company plans to open two more hotels within the next quarter, has four under construction and four in the early planning phase.

Patel, executive vice president of RAM Hotels, said the hotel’s featured amenities, like all Suite-style rooms, outdoor kitchen, fire pit and fitness center make it a perfect fit for the Avalon shopping area.

“We are confident this will capture premium extended-stay clients to stay with us for long term,” Patel said.

With close to two dozen hotels now operating within its borders, Alpharetta has drawn a large share of the business and entertainment hospitality market for North Fulton.

In addition to drawing people who stay, shop and eat in local restaurants, hotels provide cities with additional revenue in the form of local hotel/motel taxes. These taxes can add up into the hundreds of thousands each year.

Roswell is currently home to 11 hotels.

Four additional hotels are in development — three business class hotels on Westside Parkway and a boutique hotel in the Historic District.

Roswell Inc, the city’s economic development arm, is pursuing a plan to bring more hotels into the city and recently launched a second hotel feasibility study in partnership with Visit Roswell, said Roswell Inc Director of Communications and Public Relations Carisa Turner.

Johns Creek has three hotels operating within the city.

Matthew Thomas, Alpharetta Economic Development manager, said the hospitality industry serves to help keep the local economy vibrant.

“We know we have a lot of corporate travelers in the city during the week,” Thomas said. “A lot of them do business here, and to have the supply of hotels to accommodate those travelers doing business in our city with a great product such as Home2 Suites means Alpharetta is even better positioned to accommodate meetings, accommodate events and other needs of the business community.”

The hotel offers all-suite accommodations with fully-equipped kitchens and modular furniture, providing guests the flexibility to customize their suite to their style and preference. The hotel also features complimentary internet, inviting communal spaces, and trademark Home2 Suites amenities such Spin2 Cycle, a combined laundry and fitness area, Home2 MKT for grab-and-go items, and the Inspired Table, a complimentary breakfast that includes more than 400 potential combinations. Guests can also enjoy an indoor/outdoor saline pool and outdoor grills.

The property is also pet-friendly.

Maybe not all of us, and maybe not to that extreme, but for sure, all of us can always find ways to improve. And January is a great time to take that to heart.

Last week, I had the great fortune of talking to a friend, Wendy Ellin, whose business and passion is to help high-lev-

el executives organize their work-lives.

Her job — and she’s very successful at it — is to create productive work spaces and processes so her clients can work more efficiently. She’s a New Yorker who gets straight to the point and will tell you exactly what’s holding you back in your workspace and how you can more efficiently push yourself forward.

Since we are all looking for clarity right now, here are a few things that Ellin says every one of her clients have found helpful.

Ellin is a huge fan of keeping a clean E-mail Inbox. A workmate of mine asked her why she thought this was important.

“Do you go to your regular mailbox and only take out what you want? And let everything else pile up?” she said.

She suggests first to sort your inbox by “sender,” then go down the list and delete all the e-mails you no longer need. She strongly suggests just deleting anything over a year old. But, she says that if you absolutely have to hold onto

Inventory is a very expensive asset. Making sure your customers can get your products when they want them while at the same time minimizing your investment in inventory will help you maximize your profits.

Ongoing planning, taking advantage of discount terms with your vendors and utilizing inventory management technology will help you to manage inventory in your small business and improve your bottom-line results.

Ellin also talks about not letting an inability to do something perfectly get in the way of doing that thing at all. For example, all of us have that task we want to accomplish. But we put it off until we have a clear idea of how it will end perfectly. Success lies not in completing a perfect project, but in actually starting the project at all. Annual budgets, planning for a new strategy or planning for a new company position are all things that get put off while we wait until the perfect moment. She says to just put it on your calendar and get started.

She reminds me of one of my favorite Vince Lombardi quotes when she talks about the not letting the desire to be perfect get in the way of creating something excellent.

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence,” Lombardi once said.

Ellin also believes we should all make a commitment to never be late. This is one small thing you can do to manage people’s perception of you. Because after all, we earn our reputation either way. Ellin says to schedule travel time on your calendar before every meeting or event so that you arrive on time. And then honor it. If you are the first one there, you can use the time to catch up on managing your inbox, catch up on a task you were involved in, or just plain catch your breath.

Alpharetta Chamber announces Taylor mortgage team joins Synovus 2020 officers and board members COLUMBUS, Ga. — Synovus Mortgage has announced ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce has announced the volunteer officers and Board of Directors for 2020.

Ron Altman, owner of BurgerFi restaurant, becomes the chamber’s eighth chairperson. He replaces Lisa G. Shippel of Lisa Shippel Law, LLC, who becomes immediate past chair.

As 2019 comes to a close, it is a natural time to reflect on how the housing market performed over the past year. We saw positive increases in housing prices coupled with lower interest rates. The Federal Housing and Finance Agency shows that the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Alpharetta, GA MSA saw a 5.4% increase in home prices over the past 4 quarters. 2019 also showed positive developments for mortgage rates. The Federal Reserve cut the target fed funds rates 3 times over the past year for a total reduction of 75 bps. The St. Louis Federal Reserve shows that the average 30 year fixed rate for mortgage started the year at 4.51% and steadily came down to 3.73% 2020 looks to continue the momentum, with CoreLogic predicting that on a national level home prices will continue to increase by 5.4%. A look at current fed funds futures contracts shows that the market expects another .25% reduction in the Federal Reserve’s target rate for 2020, barring any unanticipated changes to the overall health of the economy. This will translate into

another robust year for the housing market.

While the overall trend is positive for 2020, it is important to remember that each neighborhood has their own idiosyncratic characteristics influencing changes in house prices. A good realtor will be able to analyze these differences to ensure you are positioned to take full advantage of appreciating house prices.

Region 7-6A basketball teams enter second push of region play

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Fans will likely be in for another tight race for the No. 1 seed in the Region 7-AAAAAA tournament with the standings logjammed after the initial round of region games in boys and girls play. Region play tips back off this week following the holiday break.

The standings are especially tight in boys play with the top six teams separated by one game or fewer.

Near the top of the fray is Cambridge, defending region champs who are 5-2 against 7-AAAAAA opponents. The Bears have a host of new talent leading the squad this season, and their added focus on defensive play has allowed them to outscore their region foes by an average of 15 points per game.

One of the Bears’ two region losses is to Johns Creek, who downed Cambridge 83-82 on Dec. 10.

Since compiling a 24-5 overall record in the 2015-16 season, the Gladiators have been near the bottom of the 7-AAAAAA standings the last three seasons. However, Johns Creek seems to have hit its stride in the opening half of this year, winning nine of their opening 12

games and compiling a 5-2 region record.

The surge has been led by the Gladiators’ offense which is tops in the region with 78 points per game in 7-AAAAAA play. Senior guard Jordan Johnson has been a consistent leader on the stat sheet, scoring 25 or more points in the Gladiators’ last four region games.

Chattahoochee, which finished third in the region tournament last season, enters the second half of its region schedule fourth in the standings. The talent-rich Cougars return to action this Friday against Cambridge.

Hooch’s two region losses have been in tight contests. The Cougars fell to Pope, 67-61, and dropped their Dec. 6 matchup with then undefeated North Atlanta, 55-51.

Despite a sub-.500 overall record, Centennial is winning the games that truly count — its 7-AAAAAA contests.

Under second-year head coach Matt Barksdale, the Knights are 4-2 to open region play.

Centennial will be challenged early in its return to region play with the Knights taking on Pope Jan. 2 and Johns Creek Jan. 4.

After winning their opening region matchup over Dunwoody, Alpharetta has

dropped five straight to put the Raiders at seventh in the standings in Clay Crump’s first season at the helm.

Northview has battled throughout its region schedule but has come up just short in several contests. The Titans fell to Cambridge, Centennial and Pope by eight points or fewer and lost their Dec. 10 matchup with North Atlanta, 60-57, in overtime.

After winning its season opener, Dunwoody has since dropped 12 straight games, including seven region tilts. The Wildcats, ninth in the 7-AAAAAA standings, are back in action Jan. 4 against Northview.

GIRLS While the standings are a bit more spread out in girls play, there will still be plenty of jostling for position when region play resumes this week.

Leading the standings entering the second phase of 7-AAAAAA games is Johns Creek. The Gladiators are tied at 6-1 with Cambridge in the standings, but Johns Creek took the Dec. 10 matchup of the teams, 57-46.

The Gladiators returned much of their offensive firepower from last year’s state tournament team and have the region’s top scoring offense with an average of 56 points per game in 7-AAAAAA play. Senior guard Ahmia Childs has led the way with significant contributions from junior guard Carson Tanguilig and senior forward Samantha Breslow.

Cambridge is off to its best start in program history and will look to continue to rack up region wins this week.

With just two seniors on its roster, the Bears’ youth has powered an impressive start to the season. Freshman Jordynn Dudley has been a major offensive contributor, with sophomore Angelina Cofrancesco and junior Kennedy Daniels contributing on both sides of the court.

Johns Creek, Cambridge and Alpharetta have separated themselves from the pack, with Pope and North Atlanta tied for fourth with 3-3 marks in region play.

Dunwoody will enter its Jan. 4 matchup with Northview at sixth in the standings. The Wildcats are seeking their first winning region record since the 2009-10 season.

Though Centennial has allowed the fewest points of any 7-AAAAAA team (39 per game), the Knights have just two region wins and sit seventh in the standings.

Bailey Hebermehl leads Centennial with 11 points per game.

Former Centennial coach Lorenzo Withrite is in his first season leading Chattahoochee, and the Cougars are 1-5 to open region play.

Three-time defending region champions Northview are at the bottom of the standings at 0-7 in 7-AAAAAA play.

After losing several standouts to graduation and former head coach Chris Yarbrough, the Titans have fallen from being the consistent leader in the region standings. Under new head coach Michael Martin, the Titans are 0-13 overall and are being outscored by an average of 41 points per game in region play.

Tailgating, literally 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 The proposal from Chevy was simple and hard to refuse.

The auto manufacturer would provide me with a 2020 Silverado 2500 packed with tailgating gear and tickets to the Nov. 30 matchup of JOE PARKER Tennessee/VanderEditor joe@appenmediagroup.com bilt football game in Knoxville. All I had to do was make the drive, tailgate and tell you, my dear readers, about the experience.

I am sure a lot of logistics work, planning and preparation went into making this possible for me, only for my lack of preparation to ruin it all.

I was not a Boy Scout for long, not enough time for me to adhere to its motto about always being prepared, anyway.

Instead of looking ahead at where to park, I instead chose to just drive in the vicinity of Neyland Stadium and find a spot. That raised no real issues until I found out that I stumbled upon a geological wonder — a 1.3-mile hike that inclined sharply, both ways.

That would not have been so bad except for the fact that it was raining.

Hard.

I was hardly a stone’s throw away from the Silverado and already soaked because I was unprepared. I knew it was going to rain. I knew I would be rained on. But instead of planning accordingly, I simply grabbed a jacket that morning that I was pretty sure was water resistant. It was not.

My partner on this trip, my father, did have a little foresight and packed rain pants. Lucky enough one pair did fit me, in the sense that I was able to put them on, but I am pretty sure the experi-

ence has left me without the ability to reproduce.

Before the rain picked up and not long after we arrived in Knoxville, there was only a persistent drizzle in the air.

But no worries, Chevy provided a large canopy that would keep our beers from being watered down. Well, that would have been the case, except I left the canopy at home.

I had removed the cooler provided in the 2500 and replaced it with my dad’s, which already had ice in it. The problem was, the cooler provided in the Chevy was not empty, it contained the tent’s canopy.

And if you were wondering, a canopy doesn’t block much rain when it is located inside a cooler 200 miles away.

Being exposed to the rain could have fried all the electronics Chevy had sent along, including a TV and large speaker, but only if they were actually supplied with power. And they were not, because I had not thought of that.

So, is the 2500 a work truck also good for play?

Well, I can say that the biggerfor-2020 Silverado swallowed up tailgating gear with ease. Packed in the backseat were two foldable chairs, a TV, large speaker, sizeable table, a tent base (without a canopy), a hefty cooler and other items under the rear seats.

The 2500’s wheelbase has been stretched 5.2 inches on new models, and the 2500 is taller and wider overall. The swelling has given the heavy-duty some added capability. Max trailering on gas models is 14,500-pounds and opting for a diesel adds 4,000 to that figure. My gas-powered four-wheel drive crew cab came with the optional Gooseneck/5th Wheel Package ($1,090) which allowed for a max of 16,650 pounds. Chevy also has tons of trailering tech and several cameras to get the big boy through tight spaces, but buyers need to select higher

to vote for what you know is right, even if it means the vote is not expedient and may not help you get reelected? Is holding office so important that it is worth compromising what and who you are until you can’t even recognize yourself — compromising and betraying who your children and grandchildren thought you were or what you stood for?

This has nothing to do with any of the current political chaos. It has everything to do with stuff like whether or not we want to help each other or hurt each other or whose laws and values we choose to follow — man’s or Gods. It

about the personal decisions we make.

Our neighborhoods, our city, our state is full of good people who care, who participate in mission trips, who volunteer, who give time and raise money to help those who are less fortunate than they are. I can think of so many individuals I know personally who are amazing in this way. Yet then so many turn around and make choices to do just the opposite and attack, demean, criticize and basically contribute to making our collective world a worse place because they are a Democrat or a Republican or because they hold office and choose to vote for what they don’t really believe, in order to be reelected.

Why do so many of us choose to compromise our values and the good works we do — the work we perform to help the least of us — by not having the discipline and the faith to be loyal to our real values, and instead opt out to adopt the values and contempt of others?

We all have the capacity to take the higher road, the more difficult road, the road that is ruled by love and unshakable faith.

So, despite what seems to be a world turned upside down today — one beyond redemption and reconciliation — I choose to hold on to hope and faith in us and to celebrate our “better angels.”

The 2500 also has a large tailgate, which easily accommodated the food my father and I had picked up and ate on the tailgate before the sky’s taps opened.

So, while there was enough gear in the cab of the Silverado to rival some “man caves,” we tailgated, literally.

Powering our trip was Chevy’s new 6.6-liter V8 offering 401 horses and 464 ft.-lb. of torque, which replaces the 6.0-liter. The new power plant had plenty of grunt to get the heavy-duty Chevy on the move with ease and provides quick responses to throttle input.

The V8 is paired with a six-speed automatic that, despite a lower number of gears, avoided clumsy changes at low speed and was quick to drop a cog when I looked to pass a left-lane loiterer.

As with most heavy-duty pickups, the Silverado’s ride is flouncy riding without the added weight of a trailer or full bed.

While the 2500’s interior is cavernous, it’s pretty humdrum. The styling is taken directly from the half-ton pickup, and there is quite a lot of cheap-feeling plastic. While a 7-inch screen (8-inchers are standard in higher trims) is a respectable size in most autos, the 2500’s massive dash make it seem diminutive.

Chevy’s Infotainment 3 is fairly straightforward and responds swiftly to input, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity come standard.

The Silverado’s seats were comfortable enough for shorter treks, but after the 200-mile trip to Knoxville, I was wishing for a little bit more support. On the way back from the game, however, the 2500’s seats felt lavish.

You know those square-foot hexagonal paving stones people use to outline flower beds or their driveways? Sit on one of those and you can experience both the size and comfort of a “seat” at Neyland Stadium.

The 2500 is offered in five trim levels, from the base work truck to the well-

appointed High Country. My Custom (a new trim and only available with the gasoline V8) tester was second from bottom in the lineup and came with 20inch wheels, a trailering package with hitch guidance, 12-fized tie downs in the bed and rear bumper corner steps. The tester also came with the Custom Value Package ($1,880) which adds remote start, LED lighting in the bed, trailer brake controller, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, SiriusXM capability and other features.

With a few grand in options, the crew cab, four-wheel drive model rang in a bit over $48,000. Base regular cabs start a bit under $36,000 with the decked out High County Crew Cab going for $62,895 with the gasoline-powered V8.

As far as tailgating is concerned, the 2500 has plenty of room to transport just about anything you could want for your pre-game setup. If you can deal with an unsettling ride, the Silverado has plenty of passenger and cargo space powered by responsive and powerful engine to eat up the miles toward the stadium. Just make sure you are prepared to tailgate.

After sleeping for less than six hours the night before the game and having to deal with the stress of driving in torrential rain for over three hours following the game, I arrived home exhausted. I was also thoroughly soaked and wanted nothing more than to take off my cold, drenched socks.

a great day. My Volunteers beat Vandy, I found the only hill in the known world that rises in both directions, I learned that my jacket was not waterproof and would stick to me like I was a vacuum-

sealed pork chop when wet, and I received a valuable lesson in planning ahead. Most importantly, I got to spend the day with my dad — and that was a good time with no tailgating required.
