The victim said he had last seen the car the previous evening when he parked it at his home on Twingate Drive. The next morning, it was gone.

The man said he had left the car unlocked with the key inside it. The garage door where the car was parked had also been left open.

Wedding band stolen during house gathering JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating an Oct. 30 incident in which a woman’s wedding band and other jewelry went missing during a gathering at her home on Forest Run Trace.

During the gathering, the woman took off her wedding band, engagement ring and a necklace and placed them on a table. When she returned to the table, she couldn’t find the jewelry.

The estimated value of the jewelry is $9,000 total.

The woman was able to obtain copies of the forged checks.

Video of suspects found on doorbell camera JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a Nov. 21 car burglary at Victory Gat Drive.

That morning, the male resident saw that his wife’s car had been rummaged through. Nothing was stolen.

The car had been left unlocked by accident, the man said.

The man checked his doorbell camera footage and saw two suspects enter the car at 3 a.m.

Employee suspected of stealing store funds JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating the theft of store funds from the Target on State Bridge Road.

A store representative told police that sometime between Oct. 31-Nov. 13, an employee was seen loading gift cards to use for their personal use.

There is footage of the employee loading and keeping the gift cards for herself.

The total value of funds on the gift cards is more than $50.

Scammer poses as officer, nearly swindles woman JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman contacted police Nov. 18 after she nearly lost $3,000 to a scammer.

Two days prior, the woman said she had received a call from someone claiming to represent the U.S. Marshal’s Office.

The caller said the woman had outstanding citations for missing jury duty and contempt of court. He initially said she owed $5,000, but the woman negotiated the charges down to $3,000.

The woman complied with the caller’s

instructions to buy several reloadable cards and read off the numbers to him.

During the process, the woman’s boyfriend informed her it was a scam.

The woman was able to freeze the cards and place a hold on the funds before contacting police.

Tablet left in vehicle removed by thieves JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman called police Nov. 21 after her car was burglarized.

The woman had parked the car at Victory Gate Drive the previous evening.

She left her backpack in the front passenger seat and left the car unlocked.

The woman said she intended to get the backpack and lock the car but fell asleep. The next morning, the woman saw her car door was unlocked and the backpack was missing. It had contained a tablet and Bluetooth earbud set.

Woman discovers fraud on credit card account JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman met with police Nov. 22 after she found fraudulent activity on her credit card account.

The woman said she had previously received a package in the mail with an invoice for $1,300. She said she had not ordered anything from the store listed on the package.

The woman contacted the store, and a representative told her that on Nov. 20, someone used her information to purchase the merchandise online.

The woman contacted her bank and found another $1,200 fraudulent charge on her card. She cancelled the card before contacting police.

Public weighs in on city gateway marker

The design “Bridge” is the clear winner from the community survey.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — With about 570 votes, the residents of Johns Creek have weighed in on what they want the proposed State Bridge Road gateway marker to look like.

The plurality of voters, 41 percent, voted for the option entitled “Bridge,” which depicts Rodgers Bridge with the Chattahoochee River flowing beneath.

The next largest segment of voters, 25 percent, said they liked none of the designs. Of those, about a third said in the comments that they were against any gateway markers or that they were a waste of taxpayer money.

The remaining votes were divided among three other design options.

“I’m glad that there was some clarity in the responses,” Mayor Mike Bodker said. “I think that’s a lot better than it showing up 33-33-33 where you’re wondering what the end result is.”

Voting for the online survey began mid-October following a series as of a community engagement meetings this summer.

The monument is proposed to be placed near the intersection of Kimball

Bridge Road and State Bridge Road.

Creating artistic monuments at the east and west entrances to the city on State Bridge Road was the top request from the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau when it came time hash out tourism product development spending last year. These projects are funded by the hotel tax and allocated by state law for use on capital projects that appeal to visitors.

A 2018 study by an outside travel consultant found gateways and signage was one of the city’s key shortcomings. After five months of negotiations between the CVB and City Council, the council allocated $64,000 to create a single marker at State Bridge and Kimball. If the project is deemed successful, it could lead to a series of gateways around the other entrances to the city.

The visitors bureau partnered with artist William Massey and Urban Catalyst Lab, a nonprofit that helps cities integrate art with urban planning. The CVB had previously partnered with Uthe firm to design the Johns Creek Tunnel under Medlock Bridge Road. Massey was one of the artists on that project.

Residents beat path to county commission Crowd calls on officials to reject asphalt plant

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — The Forsyth County Commission faced an audience of hundreds Nov. 21 as officials considered an application to build an asphalt plant at the south end of the county.

The application, filed by CW Matthews Contracting, calls for replacing an existing facility with what the company says will be a newer, cleaner and more energy-efficient operation.

More than 500 community members who were in opposition of the proposed plant on Granite Lane near Peachtree Parkway wore red T-shirts with the words “No Asphalt” and carried signs and banners into the meeting. Additional opponents stood in the lobby, stairwell and entranceway.

The issue has also garnered attention in nearby Johns Creek which sits just to the south of the site. Residents there spoke of their concerns at a town hall meeting

with city officials earlier last month.

During the public comment portion of the Forsyth County meeting, residents raised concerns over pollution, noise and the effect the plant will have on neighboring property values. About a third of the room raised their hands after Forsyth County Commission Chairman Laura Semanson asked for a show of hands for those wishing to comment after the traditional comment time expired.

Speaking on behalf of the application, Catherine Sutton-Choate, director of Environmental Compliance for plant manufacturer ASTEC Inc., said that the new equipment meets the highest environmental standards.

“If there is an issue or if a machine is operating incorrectly, it will shut itself down and a person cannot override it,” Sutton-Choate said.

Dan Garcia, president of CW Matthews, equated the upgraded plant with a new car.

“It’s going to be updated which means more efficient, more environmentally friendly, just overall better for the surrounding community,” he said.

County Commissioner Dennis Brown addressed the crowd, taking responsibil-

ity for the issue.

“I asked for this, not this board,” Brown said. “I live less than a mile from the plant, and I would never put

New book tells personal stories of aging as a woman

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Everyone experiences aging, but for women, the process can pose unique challenges.

Inspired by her own experiences, resident Rochelle Mucha wrote “Are These My Hands Now?” as a way to explore these topics.

“I’ve never had the angst that a lot of my peers have with decade birthdays,” said Mucha, founder and chair of the Roswell Arts Fund.

“But I noticed that I began avoiding lookMUCHA ing in the mirror, or when I had to take a photo of myself, I didn’t recognize the woman that I saw, that the reflection was so different from what I felt.”

She ultimately decided to write the book, her third, after researching the topic and finding primarily academic writing on women and aging.

“My intent was to write a book that would commiserate with women of all ages and to motivate women to think about their aging process,”

Mucha said. “I also wanted them to think about choosing how to age, with grace, with dignity, with energy, and not succumb to pressures that most of us have felt all our lives as women to sexiness and hair color and all of that stuff.”

In addition to several stories of Mucha’s experiences, the book tackles issues of sexism and ageism, and how they intertwine for older women.

“Aging isn’t easy on anyone, but it’s more challenging for women, in all walks of life, than men” Mucha said.

“Intimately connected with the loss of attractiveness, women grow invisible as ageism and sexism collide. The perceived loss of power and beauty, two key levers in American society, devalues women, consequently creating an unjust disadvantage.”

This disadvantage often appears in the workplace, where women are increasingly devalued as they age while the opposite holds true for men, she said.

“There is a societal double standard about this,” Mucha said.

The double standard extends into the social sphere as well, for example, where men’s gray hair is seen as distinguishing instead of dowdy and it’s not uncommon

for older men to date younger women, but it’s unusual for older women to date younger men, she said.

The title of Mucha’s work comes from a trip she took to a nail salon, a story which she shares in the book.

“It was about being in the nail salon,” Mucha said. “When you get a manicure, you’re a complete victim of you manicurist who has an intense light on your hands, and you can’t really look very far away. That’s where you really see the aging on your hands how your hands have changed over time… There wasn’t woman I spoke to who wasn’t aware of how their hands looked and how they couldn’t avoid their hands.”

“Are These My Hands Now?” offers an alternative view of aging for women.

“Women can lament or rejoice, stagnate or grow, submit or prevail,” Mucha said. “If women are to feel more positive about our aging process, then we need to think differently about it. Recognizing that aging is merely another aspect of living, of being human, can be liberating.”

Learning for the future

State School Superintendent Richards Woods, center, was among the many city, county and state dignitaries on hand Nov. 22 for the construction celebration of Innovation Academy in downtown Alpharetta. With construction nearing completion on the exterior of the building, the focus now turns to interior finishes as the school prepares for an August 2021 opening. The STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) high school will be a magnet school open to students in the north part of Fulton County. A south county STEM school will open concurrently.

Gateway: Continued from Page 4 Some members of the City Council and public have criticized the CVB for going straight to UCL rather than holding an open bidding process or selecting a Johns Creek artist.

In his artist statement, Massey said the monument uses the open voids between the trusses of Rogers Bridge as windows into history. Images spanning the bridge represent aspects and eras of local history, including Native Americans, farming, gold mining, education and technology.

In September, the CVB Board and City Council received three design options from the artist. All were to go to a public vote set to begin Sept. 30.

However, based on private feedback from members of the City Council and CVB board, the vote was delayed.

Before going to the public, the artist modified the existing designs and created two new designs, including the eventual winner, “Bridge.”

NEWS The next steps are for the design to go before the Public Art Board on Dec. 5, and then before the City Council for a final vote.

The CVB has requested funding for a second gateway marker as part of the 2020 tourism product development budget. At a recent work session, the City Council raised questions about the replicability of Massey’s designs.

As part of the design survey, 50 percent of respondents said all future monuments should use the same designs. With that it mind, it is unlikely the City Council would approve any design that could not be replicated in a cost-efficient way.

The council has already approved the tourism board’s suggestions to allocate $70,000 for Phase II of the installation of the Wall That Heals and $56,000 for improvements at Autrey Mill. The council also indicated it would like to allocate some of the tourism product development funds to a Chattahoochee River greenway study.

The council is expected to continue discussions on tourism product development funds Dec. 9.

Georgia Trustees holds 5th annual Wine and Spirits Challenge Spirits industry growing throughout Peach State

By ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Georgia Trustees celebrated the state’s best in wine and spirits recently at the fifth annual Wine and Spirits Challenge at the Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta.

The formal awards banquet recognized the industry’s top producers and vintners.

Roughly 130 residents attended the gala anticipating a taste from some of Georgia’s top wine manufacturers. Seven of the state’s 19 distilleries submitted entries.

Jane Garvey, a member of the Board of Directors for the Georgia Trustees and co-founder of the event, said she is consistently surprised by what is being accomplished in Georgia’s growing wine industry.

“We added cider and mead a couple of years ago, and this year we added spirits…the economic multiplier from those enterprises is terrific,” said Garvey. “Certainly [surprised by] the growth in quality. The discovery that we can grow varieties that we didn’t think we could grow…”

According to the National Association of American Wineries, Georgia’s wineries generated $88 million in annual tourism expenses in 2017 and contributed a whopping $4.1 billion to the economy through its related industries. Since the early 2000s, the wine industry has seen a massive shift in profit and productivity.

“It’s growing leaps and bounds. There are new wineries popping up monthly,”

Economy holding the wheel amid political uncertainty From a political point of view, things may seem rocky, volatile and uncertain.

As for the economy, it’s been kind of a dull ride as investors and corporations play things safe, waiting to see how the political Geoff smith Assurance Financial, dust will settle. gsmith@lendtheway.com Mortgage interest rates have done nothing but hover around the lowest they’ve been in about three years. In fact, according to MortgageNewsDaily’s rate survey, the 30-year fixed rate of 3.95 percent is at almost the exact same place it was in November of 2016.

We’ve been waiting since the downturn in 2008 for rates to go back up over 5 percent, an indicator that our economy is back on strong footing. Prior to 2008, the last time, and only time, rates dipped under 5 percent was for a brief period during WWII when not many people were buying houses.

Since hitting their lowest point of 3.45 percent back in November 2012, almost every year, rate-predictors said rates would be up over 5 percent by year’s end.

And every year, they seemed to end lower.

Last year, in 2018, rates for the first time consistently went up and finally over 5 percent to about 5.17 percent in November before tumbling all the way down to 3.82 percent this past September.

Rates are tied to investors’ confidence in the economy. And the measure of rates are the measure really of that.

When investors feel confident in their understanding of the economy, they buy stocks. Mortgage interest rates are tied loosely to the yield on the 10-Year Treasury, which goes up when investors are

buying stocks and not bonds.

But when investors are spooked, they pull money from stocks and head for the safety of bonds. This drops the 10-Yield Treasury yield and mortgage interest rates with it.

Politically, this year has been relatively volatile. While major corporations and industries seem to be plugging along, they are playing it safe amid the uncertainty.

One of the biggest rattlers of the economy is the threat of more tariffs against and the enticement of a trade deal with China.

If tariffs are put in place, that would surely make certain goods more expensive as they are taxed entering the country. Exactly which goods and exactly how that will affect the economy is hard for investors to predict.

Throw on top of that we are about to head into a presidential election year and everything that comes with it, and there’s a lot of uncertainty. Even if tariffs and a trade-deal is put into place, the Democrats could win the election and the new president could undo all of that. Then there are the impeachment hearings, which depending on which side you are on, are either a big show by the Democrats leading up to the election, or a serious inquiry which could lead to an eventual unseating of the president before he has a chance to defend his post in an election.

Investors and corporations seem to be playing things as safely as they can.

Business investment in the third quarter declined as corporations opted to hold onto their cash. As one business owner put it in a recent Wall Street Journal report, they are kind of holding steady, but are reticent to put themselves into growth mode.

In the last election year, the economy seemed to be in a similar state. Mortgage rates slid for most of the year, right

up until the election, after which they launched upward as investors scrambled to invest in the stock market with bets on how the new president would steer the economy. That lasted right up until the healthcare bill didn’t pass.

So with corporations trying to play things safe heading into next year, the Federal Reserve is doing what it can to nudge them back into the arena. They have lowered their short-term interest rate several times this year and may have another one in store for us before year’s end. This rate is the rate in which banks get back when they store their money at the Federal Reserve. Banks, like us, don’t like to hold onto cash. So when they have it, they invest it. When the economy tanked in 2008, banks didn’t see any safe places to put their money, so they went to the Federal Reserve.

The Fed thought it better to push them back into lending money to businesses and to get the money working through the economy. So they lowered the interest rate to 0 percent. That’s kind of what the Fed is doing now. Shoving money back into the economy.

While the political circus pushes on, the rest of us will do our best to keep things on track.

There are many benefits to segmenting your market. First and foremost, you will have a much higher likelihood of better matching the needs of potential customers. Focusing on the right segments can net you a higher market share and help you grow your small business.

Quartz or Granite. These are the absolute standards. Don’t consider anything but these options. Whether for style, aesthetics, function or durability; an updated kitchen must have granite or quartz. Stay away from complicated edges, like ogee, and keep is simple.

Cooktop On the Wall. “We’re moving the cooktop to a wall location and creating magnificent tile focal points on many of our kitchens” says Remodeling Expo Center’s, John Hogan. “Moving the cooktop to the wall or moving the microwave from above the cooktop, each of these design strategies yields gorgeous kitchens.

Smart Storage. Sometimes enlarging the kitchen isn’t possible, or sometimes as a component of expanding the kitchen, smart storage options is always a component of the remodel. Spice racks, Keurig inserts, roll-out drawers and hidden appliance options are all surprisingly common features of 2019 kitchens.

Lighting. More light sources create less shadows and more comfortable ambient lighting feel. Remodeling Expo Center emphasizes the use of clear light, LED technology which reflects off counters and backsplash and contributes to truly gorgeous kitchens.

The Total Kitchen. Bringing all of these elements together is what makes truly gorgeous kitchens and they don’t need to be ultra expensive; they just need to be well planned. The more time you spend on planning, the better the kitchen will turn out.

Johns Creek woman named statewide Volunteer of the Year JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek resident Jeanne “Jeno” Marvel was recognized by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association as the recipient of the 2019 Volunteer of the Year for the state.

Marvel is a longtime coach and has served on the board of the Ocee Park Athletic Association for eight years. She helped establish the North Metro Select League, a select program implemented to offer competitive baseball to advancedskill players from the recreational program.

She also played an instrumental role

in introducing and implementing travel baseball at Ocee which offers the highest level of competitive baseball for boys and girls in the Johns Creek community.

“Coach Jeno has had a lasting and positive effect on the City of Johns Creek Recreation and Parks Division as well as all those associated with Ocee Park Baseball,” Johns Creek Recreation Manager Kirk Franz said. “If you were to ask Coach Jeno what she’s most proud of looking back at the years at Ocee, she would likely tell you that it’s the kids.”

Local golfer takes Georgia Player of the Year honors

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek’s Erica Scutt, 16, was recently named the Georgia Junior PGA Player of the Year following a standout season in which she won six of ten tournaments. Scutt, a junior at Northview High School, took the title for girls aged 15 to 18 years old.

The Player of the Year honor goes to the player who amasses the most points throughout the year based on placement in each tournament. With six wins and two finishes in second, Scutt compiled more than double the points of the runner-up.

“It means a lot of hard work I’ve put into the game over the last 12 years is starting to pay off,” Scutt said. “Through the ups and downs of the game when I though I wasn’t getting better, I was improving, just maybe at a slower rate than normal. It showed the work paid off when the tournament wins and points started adding up.”

Scutt’s wins included the UGA Junior Classic and the Atlanta Junior

Championship played at the demanding East Lake Country Club where the PGA Tour contests the FedEx Cup. The Georgia Junior PGA tour provided Scutt with valuable experience and allowed her to better her game, she said.

“I have to thank the tour because they had me play in a lot of weather conditions that I thought we weren’t supposed to play in,” she said. “They pushed me and made me a lot stronger and helped me mentally to get through tough tournaments.”

Her family was also a major source of backing.

“My family was at every single tournament, helping and supporting me,” Scutt said. “We stayed at a lot of hotels, and it would be all of us in one room having a great time.”

Scutt is not content to rest on her laurels.

“I have learned a lot about myself, and have learned my strengths, but my weaknesses shined through most,” she said. “In the offseason, and I’ll still be playing in a lot of tournaments, I have a lot of bigger goals like having less than

36 putts per round and having each chip within a 5-foot circle [from the hole].”

Scutt will take those goals into the 2020 GHSA golf season where she will compete with perennial state title contenders Northview.

“I think the high school season is just more fun,” she said. “I get to play with all my friends. I have the chance to be captain of the team and handle all the technology and communications of the team. My grandfather is the photographer and my mom is the booster club president. The season also helps build confidence and helps me play well on shorter distances and other parts of my game.”

Ultimately, Scutt has her sights set on playing collegiately, which she has dreamed about since picking up the game at 4-years old, she said.

Wandering, pondering …

Sometimes it’s fun to meticulously plan a trip, charting every place you’ll go (and a good place for good barbecue for lunch). Such trips are remarkably unstressful because you know exactly where STEVE HUDSON you’ll be when and so Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net don’t have to worry about where you’re going to go. You’ve planned it all beforehand, see, and that takes the stress away.

But at the same time such an adventure can be a little, well, confining.

If I’m honest with myself, I think I enjoy the spontaneous trip more than the one that’s planned out in detail.

Sure, I need a little direction (as in north or south or east or west) and perhaps at least a vague idea of what I’m going to be doing (fishing, rock collecting, hiking, canoeing and so son) so I can at least dress for the part. Beyond that, though, it can be fun and even a little exhilarating to just climb up into the old gray truck and go.

That’s what I did the other weekend. I’d spent the morning as a volunteer working with cancer patients in a program called Casting for Confidence.

The Georgia Women Fly Fishers offers this annual one-day fly fishing retreat to female cancer survivors with the idea of providing (as the organization’s website puts it) “fundamental fly fishing instruction while also engaging participants in the therapeutic qualities that trout stream fishing brings.”

It’s a great program.

“When I told my oncologist what I was going to be doing this weekend,” said one of the ladies, “he told me it would change my life.”

I understand exactly what the good doctor meant.

My assignment at this year’s Casting for Confidence event was to talk to the ladies about the “gear” side of fly fishing. We chatted about rods and reels and line and waders and all the rest. We even covered the fine art of tying some of the knots that folks use when fly fishing. I think everyone had a good day, and it was an uplifting and really quite thought-provoking morning.

The morning session ended about

Casting with Confidence participants lunchtime, and I had to excuse myself to meet a deadline, the bane of every writer’s existence. Packing my stuff into the passenger seat, I pointed the truck back toward Roswell.

But I hadn’t gone far when I decided that I didn’t really want to head back to the keyboard. Not just yet. Instead, the thoughts that the morning had provoked still rattled in my head. I wasn’t done with them. I needed to give them some time to resolve. So I decided, instead, just to set out and wander around the mountains for a while to literally (and figuratively, too) see what I might see.

That’s how I found myself on Dicks

We’ve talked about Turner’s Corner before. It’s the place where you’ll find Stone Pile Gap, a storied pyramid of stones tied to a legend involving a Cherokee princess and the idea that dropping a stone on the pile of rocks will bring you good luck.

Anyway, when I saw the sign for Dicks Creek Road, a bell rang in my mind. I hadn’t been that way in a long time, but I recalled that it led to another

It wasn’t far.

I bumped along Dicks Creek Road for a while, the driver’s side window rolled down so I could enjoy the crisp fall air.

Then, as I approached Waters Creek Road, I heard the unmistakable sound of falling water off to my left. The road widened into a parking spot. I pulled off and parked and went to see what I might see.

What I found was a delightful twotiered waterfall just a few dozen yards from the road. At the first tier, the creek dropped over a ledge into a pool. From there, the second tier dropped the creek into a long, narrow chute which exited into a bigger pool below. The water was crystal-clear, and it seemed I could make out every detail of the streambed.

Angled rocks between road and waterfall provided access, and I scrambled down for a better look. I went carefully, taking my time. Now and then I stopped to take a photo, but mostly I just watched the water and thought about things.

As I was picking my way down to the bottom of the cascades, I met two adults with an indeterminate number of kids in tow coming back up the indistinct trail.

“You’ll like it!” said the leader, presumably the mom.

“Do you get here often?” I asked.

“Now and then,” she said. “It’s such a beautiful place. I always feel better after I come here.”

They went on to their car, and I continued to pick my way over the rocks. The best photo spot, I decided, was a ways downstream. But I decided it would take too long to get there. I had taken a long time wandering, and to my faint surprise I saw that daylight was fading. So I turned back to climb back to the truck and at last head for home.

Daylight does that sometimes. It fades before you know it. So you’ve got to grab those waterfalls when you can — or help someone else grab one when they need a hand along life’s way.

Student Leadership Johns Creek opens application JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Applications are now open for the Student Leadership Johns Creek class of 2022.

The deadline to apply is January 31, 2020. Applications are available at studentleadershipjohnscreek.com or through the school sponsors at each of the four Johns Creek schools.

This is a two-year program that involves student leaders from Centennial, Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview high schools.

Participants in the first year learn leadership skills at the various program dates they attend and are required to perform a community service project as a school team.

Some of the projects past students have completed include rebranding the Johns Creek Police Department’s Billy Badge program and a book drive for Girls, Inc. Students in the second-year work more independently. They are charged with two multi-media projects.

One is to build an on-line personal portfolio including resume, personal mission and vision, and a LinkedIn profile.

Student Leadership Johns Creek gradu-

ates report that this project has helped them with college scholarship applications as well as finding internships in college.

The second project is to shadow a business professional in a field they are considering pursuing. These presentations are due in March prior to the graduation ceremony at Johns Creek High School in April.

In addition, nine of the student leaders represent Student Leadership Johns Creek in the Secretary of State Ambassadors Program. In 2018 and 2019, the group competed with nearly 200 other schools and organizations statewide and won the entire competition both years. This year the Secretary of State Ambassadors hosted a debate between the 10 City Council candidates at Northview High School.

Graduates from the program will receive prestigious graduation cords they can wear during their high school graduation ceremony.

Cyclists spread joy, toys for 28th year

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The 28th annual Buck Jones Memorial Toy Ride rumbled through Forsyth County into Dawson and ended in Lumpkin Nov. 24.

Engines of 200 motorcycles roared as bikers left the Cumming Fairgrounds and headed north in blustery weather.

Registration was one gift — or gift card — for each stop on the ride: Forsyth County, Dawson County and Lumpkin County.

For those who preferred to not make the trek or preferred to travel without donations, trailers were at the fairgrounds to gather donations which would later be distributed to a nonprofit in each of the three counties.

Donuts, coffee and hot chocolate were on hand to warm the hands of riders, but their hearts were already pretty warm.

“All kids deserve something, something nice for Christmas,” said Don Bailey of Forsyth County who was participating in his fifth ride.

Donna Reese came with $200-$300 worth of stuffed animals on her bike.

The petite resident of Acworth had them stuffed in a bag and dozens more fastened with bungee cords to her motorcycle. In a trunk-like compartment she had a large stack of coloring books.

“I don’t know how many there are, I just kept grabbing them and stuffing them behind the bungee cords,” Reese said giggling. “I told them to hold on tight and not to fall off on the highway.”

Others milled about, sharing stories of previous rides and memories of Buck Jones, the ride’s namesake, like the time Don Parkinson accidently created a flier for the Buck Jones Memorial ride and

When they arrived at Dawsonville City Hall, riders dined on pinto beans and cornbread. Some lucky riders were served by Mrs. Claus.

The ride originated 28 years ago when Buck Jones, then Cumming police chief, saw a need for the community to spread joy at the holidays. Only a handful of riders left from South Forsyth High School that year.

There have been as many as 600 riders participating in the holiday ride, according to Parkinson who has been involved since the beginning. Typical participation is 165-235, except for the year there was five.

“It was about 5 or 6 years ago, it was pouring, and there was about five riders,” Parkinson said. “They made it to Dawsonville and some dropped out.”

One of those finishers was Steven Jones, Buck’s son.

Family members continue to ride, but not Treva Jones, Buck’s widow.

“I would ride with him, one-on-one,” she said. “I learned to ride when I was 55 years old.”

Treva, now 80, loves to come out for the ride. She’s greeted with hugs and well wishes from many of the riders.

“I think it’s wonderful, I think it’s awesome,” she said. “It just thrills my heart to know that the dream that Buck had 20some years ago is still being carried on.”

The day was a milestone for the petite South Carolina native.

Twenty-one years ago, she was diagnosed with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) a rare blood disease.

“Buck came home from the ride that year and took me to the hospital where doctors told me if I’d waited until the next day, I’d be in heaven,” she said. “It’s a time of praise for what God has done for me. It’s a double Thanksgiving for me.”

And what would Buck think of the 200 riders gathered that brisk November afternoon in his honor?

“Buck would be so thrilled because he had a passion for the children,” Treva said. “He knows today. Buck’s in heaven, and he knows what’s going on today. I’m just so thankful to everybody that came out to contribute their time.”

G&G Cycles of Roswell sponsored the event because, as owner Shawn Guinther said, “I love kids” and many of the riders were his customers.

“I love to give to less fortunate kids that can’t have gifts for Christmas,” he said.
