JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police Nov. 13 after he discovered that his family’s cars had been burglarized.

Police arrived at Mulberry Manor Court and spoke with the couple. The wife said she had noticed earlier that her car’s front passenger door had been left partially open. The husband’s car was left in a similar state.

Residence burglarized while family is away JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a Nov. 11 house burglary at Oak Alley Way. The family had left the house that morning for work. When they returned home that evening, they saw that the glass back door had been shattered. Police said the house had been ransacked.

Several items had been taken, including $500 cash, watches, jewelry and a Social Security card.

Employee suspected of stealing from store JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested an employee of the Target on State Bridge Road Nov. 13 after she was caught allegedly stealing merchandise.

The asset protection leader of the Target contacted police to report that between Oct.31-Nov. 10, the employee had loaded store money on to gift cards she later used to purchase merchandise.

The total loss to the store, he said, was close to $700.

Nothing had been stolen from either car.

Police spoke with a neighbor who had a doorbell camera.

The camera had footage of a man entering the couple’s cars and leaving in a car with another person.

Officers said the car seen in the footage matched a car used in Nov. 10 car burglary in Forsyth County.

Police said they spoke to the employee, who admitted to loading the gift cards.

The employee, 19, was arrested without incident for computer theft and theft by taking.

Caller poses as relative to get money for bond JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man contacted police Nov. 13 after he realized he had almost been scammed out of $1,000.

The previous day, the man said he had received a call from someone claiming to be his grandson. The caller said he had been jailed in California and needed money for his bond.

The victim provided his debit card number to the caller.

Shortly after the call, the man called his ex-wife, who confirmed that his grandson was with her and had not been arrested.

The man called his bank to cancel his card before a transaction could go through.

Woman suspected of prescription fraud JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a Nov. 11 incident in which a woman attempted to fill out a prescription that did not belong to her.

The pharmacy tech at the Target on State Bridge Road said the woman had presented a prescription with the wrong number. Several other details on the prescription card likewise did not match up, the pharmacy tech said, including the patient’s birth date and doctor’s address.

When the woman asked for the prescription back, the pharmacy tech refused and called police.

DUI arrests Rachelle Ethier, 38, of Lake Crest Lane, Roswell, was arrested Nov. 11 on Old Alabama Road in Johns Creek for DUI.

Scammer poses as boss to get woman’s money JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman called police Nov. 13 after she lost $400 to someone posing as her boss.

That morning, the woman received a text from someone claiming to be her boss.

The text instructed her to buy four $200 gift cards and send him the numbers.

The woman said she did so without question, because she frequently ran errands for her boss.

After sending the numbers, the texter told her to buy more. Before she could, her actual boss called her, and she realized she had been scammed.

Two of the gift card numbers had not gone through to the scammer.

Vehicle burglarized while woman at park JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a Nov. 16 car burglary at Newtown Park.

The owner of the car had parked it that afternoon at the park and went on a walk. About 30 minutes later, the owner returned and saw that her passenger side front window had been smashed.

A wallet was missing from the car.

The owner said she had not seen anyone at the park during her route.

Fuse thief hits heater at assisted living home JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A maintenance supervisor for an assisted living facility contacted police Nov. 13 after he saw that 12 fuses had been stolen.

The supervisor said he arrived at work that morning and noticed that it was unusually cold in the hallways. He turned the thermostat up, but an hour later, the temperature had not changed.

The maintenance supervisor checked the fuse boxes and saw that several fuses were missing. Each fuse is valued at $30.

City Council candidates promise city center at runoff debate

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — While the eyes of the nation were on south Atlanta for a Democratic presidential primary debate, miles to the north, in a locally owned restaurant Johns Creek was having a debate of its own.

There was no grandstanding for the cameras or celebrity pundit moderators, just City Council candidates having cordial conversations about what they’d like the future of their city to look like.

In the general election earlier this month, no candidate secured a majority of votes, sending the top two candidates from each of the three races into a runoff. In just a few weeks, the Secretary of State Ambassadors, a subgroup of Student Leadership Johns Creek, pulled together a second debate.

The students asked the candidates questions about local issues, including a potential city center, support for the arts, cyberbullying and traffic, Nov. 20 at Sankranti Restaurant.

Post 2 For Post 2, the seat that will be vacated by Councilman Jay Lin at the end of the year, retired Police Major Brian Weaver received the most votes, 45.6 percent, while businessman Dilip Tunki finished second with 30.3 percent of the vote.

Tunki said if elected he would use his business experience to drive economic development, create a stronger sense of place in Johns Creek and reduce traffic congestion.

Brian Weaver leaned on his experience with the Johns Creek Police department and said his three areas of focus are public safety, quality of life and economic development.

A major theme throughout the evening was building a city center in Johns Creek. All the candidates generally said they supported a mixed-use development in Technology Park that includes City Hall, Linear Park and a performing arts venue, or Legacy Center.

Most of the candidates agreed that to achieve a financially viable center, it must include a residential component.

“A residential component is definitely necessary for a city center to be successful,” Weaver said. “If you look at other city centers near us, Alpharetta or Peachtree Corners, they have a residential component.”

He also noted that this wouldn’t necessarily mean apartments but could mean townhomes, owner-occupied condos or age-restricted housing.

Tunki took a different view.

“The developers are saying it won’t be feasible without a residential component,” he said. “That’s not going to be true, because once we have the Legacy Center and the park, there’ll be a lot of foot traffic for the shops.”

On a question about the city outsourcing its Public Works and Parks and Recreation departments, Tunki said it made sense when the city started, but now it would be more affordable to bring those jobs in-house. Weaver, on the other hand, said the contracted employees brought a depth of resources and expertise the city could not replicate on its own.

Weaver took a stronger stance on a question about cyberbullying, which current City Council members have said is a rampant problem in the city’s political discourse. While Tunki said the best they could do is to try to educate

Councilman Christ Coughlin, the only incumbent in the runoff, stands by his record, saying he’s helped the city save millions each year. people, Weaver said in certain instances prosecuting digital harassers may be appropriate.

Post 4 City Councilman Christ Coughlin, the only incumbent in the race, came just shy of an all-out victory Nov. 5, taking 47.2 percent of the vote. He faces Marybeth Cooper, former president of the Johns Creek Community Association, who earned 19.1 percent of votes.

Coughlin said he brings a scientific, data-driven approach to the council and has a proven record of saving the city millions each year.

Cooper said she is running to bring a fresh, positive attitude to the council and finish projects that were promised, like those funded through the transportation sales tax (TSPLOST) and parks bond.

Coughlin disagreed that TSPLOST projects are moving too slowly, saying that the process of developing plans and acquiring right of way just takes time.

While its true that even in the best of circumstances it takes years for a traffic

project to go from concept to construction, some TSPLOST projects — like widening Jones Bridge Road or the intersection of Medlock Bridge and State Bridge — have been held up during Coughlin’s term, either because of disagreement among the council or because of a decision to seek more information.

Another area where Cooper criticized Coughlin’s record was his vote earlier this year to roll back the city’s property tax rate, or millage rate. In Johns Creek, the millage rate is set at the end of the fiscal year.

When Johns Creek was set to have about $5 million surplus in 2019, the council voted unanimously to lower the tax rate and, in essence, returned some of that money to taxpayers. However, some City Council members say they have set themselves up for a likely tax hike in 2020 to meet the city’s needs, like stormwater maintenance.

“It’s not sustainable,” Cooper said.

“At some point, you can only become so lean. Raising and cutting, raising and cutting is just going to drive people crazy. Find a rate. Make it work.”

Coughlin defended the retroactive approach.

“In my mind, it would be appropriate to put your needs in the budget and then, you set the millage rate at what you need to fill the budget gap,” he said.

“When we do have those opportunities for extra revenue, I like to give those back to the residents and then make those investments where we need them.”

Post 6 For Post 6, the seat being vacated by Councilman Steve Broadbent, attorney Erin Elwood was the highest vote-earner, with 38.1 percent of the final tally. The other runoff candidate, small business owner Issure Yang, was close behind with 31.9 percent.

City renews agreement with Autrey Mill center

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council unanimously voted to approve a new facility use agreement with Autrey Mill with provisions to reevaluate funding for the nature preserve in one year.

Responding to Autrey Mill’s request for operational support, the council agreed to take on phone and internet costs but left questions about the visitor center unanswered.

Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center is a 46-acre park that includes 3 miles of trails, animal exhibits, historic buildings and a small museum.

It offers programs including summer camps, classes for children and adults, scout activities, lectures and seasonal festivals.

When Johns Creek incorporated, the city bought the nature preserve from Fulton County. The city owns the land and buildings and is responsible for upkeep of the facilities, but the programs are managed by the nonprofit Autrey Mill Nature Preserve Association.

A facility use agreement allows the Autrey Mill association to offer programing on the city property, similar to agreements with Newtown and Ocee Recreation groups.

Under the current agreement, which is set to expire at the end of the year, the nonprofit has the ability to request capital improvements that the city could then choose to fund through its annual budget process. In 2019 the city funded an addition to the parking lot.

As the contract was up for renewal, Autrey Mill asked for a contract that allowed them to request operational funding as well as capital projects.

Autrey Mill Board President Pam Sutton attests that the nonprofit provides services to the public, such as staffing a visitors’ center, answering email and phone calls, providing trail maps and coordinating volunteers and contractors that go beyond what the current contract dictates.

In September, the city’s Recreation and Parks Advisory Committee recommended that the council approve a new contract that allowed Autrey Mill to request operational funding, but the council asked to see more details about what requests the nonprofit would make before it changed the contract.

One request was easily resolved.

Autrey Mill said it pays about $1,800 a year for phone and internet costs. At a

Nov. 4 work session, the city agreed to take on these costs.

If the city didn’t contract with Autrey Mill, the city would pay for those services, Mayor Mike Bodker said, just like the phones at City Hall or internet at Park Place.

Autrey Mill said it would also like the ability to bill the city for staff hours spent coordinating volunteers and contractors who tend to the grounds. But, the request drew pushback.

“If our contractors aren’t doing their job, then our job is to get our contractors to do their job,” Bodker said.

“It’s not for Autrey Mill to manage our contractors. We’re responsible for our contractors.”

Sutton said that because of the historic nature of most of Autrey Mill’s buildings, more sophisticated supervision is required.

“With nine buildings and seven of them historical, exterminators, plumbers, electricians, there’s always something going on,” Sutton said. “When those people are sent, our staff is the one that not only lets them into the building but also needs to watch to make sure they don’t suddenly cut a hole in a wall that was built in the 1850s.”

The city said it would review and try to improve the volunteer and contractor coordination process so that Autrey Mill was not overburdened.

“What I’d like is clear delineation of who’s got what,” Bodker said. “An easy one, from my vantage point, is we own it, we fix it, we maintain it. If that means more coordination, it means more coordination, and that’s both parties’ responsibility.”

Autrey Mill also operates a visitors center. When regular staff are engaged in programming, Autrey Mill hires parttime staff so the facility can maintain the hours posted on its and the city’s website.

“It’s very important, I think, as ambassadors of the city to provide that and not just say ‘I’m sorry, we don’t know when we’re open or closed,’” Sutton said.

The council agreed there is value to the city in providing a visitors center, but members were unwilling to give carte blanche for the nonprofit to staff the center as it sees fit. The council suggested Autrey Mill work with the Convention and Visitors Bureau to see if it could be a source of funding.

The council agreed to reevaluate Autrey Mill’s contract in April 2020 to see if its new strategies could cover the gap in Autrey Mill’s needs.

Councilman announces candidacy for Georgia House

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek City Councilman Jay Lin, who will step down at the end of the year, recently announced he intends to run for State House District 50 on the Republican ticket.

District 50 represents most of Johns Creek. In 2018, Democrat Rep. Angelika Kausche won an open race for the seat.

LIN Lin is a firstgeneration immigrant from Taiwan. He is a licensed general contractor and owner of Pacific Ventures, a remodeling and construction firm.

Lin said he will use his business acumen as an entrepreneur to KAUSCHE help promote government efficiency and economic development to improve the lives of all Georgia’s citizens.

“For Georgia to excel in the 21st century economy, we must avoid the poisoned, partisan politics that have crippled Washington,” Lin said. “We must rally together around common sense solutions that expand access to the middle class and beyond — lower taxes, great schools, workforce development programs and an efficient government that solves problems instead of creating them.”

As a first-time candidate, Lin was elected to the City Council in 2015.

Earlier this year, Lin was tapped by Gov. Brian Kemp to be a member of his transition team. Lin currently serves on a number of task forces, including the Minority Owned Business task force under the Georgians First Commission.

Active in his Christian faith, Lin also serves on the board of “Beyond Sunday,” a non-profit organization focused on marketplace ministry.

He was previously a member of Iron Sharpens Iron, a marketplace discipleship program for senior executives, and he served as Johns Creek chapter president for Businessmen’s Fellowship USA. Politicos from both parties have identified 2020 as a critical race for

state legislatures. After the 2020 census, new congressional and state legislative districts will be drawn.

If Republicans maintain control of both Georgia houses, they could draw maps in a way that benefits their party politically, a process known as Gerrymandering. To have a seat at the table, Democrats would need a net gain of 16 seats in the House or seven in the Senate.

Johns Creek is likely to be seen as a battleground by both sides. Of the four House seats that represent Johns Creek, three are held by freshman Democrats who won with less than 52 percent of the vote — Kausche, Rep. Beth Moore and Rep. Josh McLaurin.

Republican Rep. Chuck Martin retained his seat 54 to 46 percent.

Kausche is a retired business professor. She is a German immigrant who became a U.S. Citizen in 2011. She cut her political teeth working on Jon Ossoff’s 2017 campaign for the 6th U.S. Congressional District.

Lin announced earlier this year he would not seek reelection to City Council. There will be a runoff election for his Post 2 seat Dec. 3 between retired Police Major Brian Weaver and businessman Dilip Tunki.

County adds tag renewal kiosk at Kroger stores JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Fulton County Tax Commissioner Arthur Ferdinand officially opened two more vehicle tag renewal kiosks at Kroger stores Nov. 21.

The newest locations are at the chain’s stores at 10945 State Bridge Road in Johns Creek and on Ponce De Leon Avenue in northeast Atlanta. They join previous locations in Atlanta and Sandy Springs to improve convenience for customers seeking to renew their vehicle registration and receive their tag decals in an efficient manner.

“This is another opportunity to provide great customer service to our Fulton County taxpayers by making this process easier and more convenient,” Ferdinand said. “Because of the customer response to the other kiosks around Fulton County, we wanted to give more drivers the opportunity to take care of this errand as they do their shopping.”

Taxpayers will be able to scan their driver’s license, vehicle registration renewal notice or enter their tag number at the kiosks to begin processing their vehicle registration renewals. Customers can access the kiosks at any point during open store hours from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week at each of the new locations. Each renewal at the kiosks will have a $3 transaction fee and a State of Georgia negotiated credit fee equaling 2 percent of the total transaction amount.

Regional survey highlights housing, transportation as top issues

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Housing and transportation are key issues for Fulton County residents, according to the Atlanta Regional Commission’s 2019 Metro Atlanta Speaks Survey.

The survey, conducted by Kennesaw State University’s A.L. Burruss Institute of Public Service and Research, polled close to 5,500 people across 13 Metro Atlanta counties, including Fulton, about quality-of-life issues. The survey was spurred by the ARC’s new Metro Atlanta Housing Strategy designed to help local governments better understand their housing challenges. It also seeks to help address those challenges through actionable strategies, according to ARC Senior Communications Coordinator Kate Sweeney.

“This year’s Metro Atlanta Speaks survey makes it clear that housing is a big concern in our region,” said Doug Hooker, ARC executive director. “The Metro Atlanta Housing Strategy provides a strategic, regional approach to address this critical issue. As a region, we must take action if we are to maintain our economic competitiveness and remain a

great place to live.”

One of the key survey findings shows about 45 percent of Fulton residents could not afford to stay in their communities if they had to move.

Additionally, 65 percent of Fulton residents said they saw older homes in their area being replaced by new, more expensive housing. Nearly three-quarters, 74 percent, said they witnessed property flipping, where homes are remodeled and sold or rented at higher prices.

Almost a third of Fulton residents, 29 percent, named transportation as the biggest problem in the region, followed by crime at 21 percent. Expanded transit was chosen as the best traffic solution by over half of respondents.

Other survey topics included personal finances, local economy, and jobs and careers.

“The Metro Atlanta Speaks survey is a source of critical information for our organization and others,” said Ginneh Baugh, associate vice president of strategy and knowledge at the United Way of Greater Atlanta, one of the supporters of the survey. “It helps us gain a closer understanding of experiences of the region’s residents

on a number of issues that are vital to our future.”

Other survey supporters include The Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, MARTA, the Metro Atlanta Chamber, the North Fulton Community Improvement District, Invest Atlanta, Partnership Gwinnett and the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.

North Fulton CID Program Director Kristin Winzeler said her organization supports the ARC and its efforts to help inform local and regional decision-making.

“Fulton County leadership has the ability to see what matters to their residents specifically in Fulton County,” Winzeler said. “This can inform planning and decision-making at the leadership level. Not only does this survey give residents a voice, it allows residents to gain more information about issues they may not be aware are affecting their communities… The more residents know the better prepared they can be to help themselves and their community.”

Kristin said that since the ARC survey began, transportation and traffic have consistently been named as some of the top concerns in the region.

“Transportation and traffic issues remain top of mind for everyone in the region,” Winzeler said. “Projections show that by 2050, Metro Atlanta will add 2.9 million residents. This is something to consider when planning for the future and investing in transportation and infrastructure improvements.”

North Fulton CID has used ARC survey information to launch initiatives to improve current transit, she said.

In January 2020, it will begin its bus shelter program in partnership with the City of Alpharetta and MARTA. As a part of the program, North Fulton CID will build three new bus shelters within its district and allow member to apply for additional funding to build or upgrade shelters near their locations.

“Investing in the current transit system is how we feel we can make an impact while giving the regional leadership time to determine what mass transit looks like for North Fulton and, more importantly, how it will be funded,” Winzeler said.

Shakerag Park hosts regional cricket tourney JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Bengali Association of Greater Atlanta hosted the third annual Scicom Cup cricket tournament Nov. 2-9 in Shakerag Park.

The Johns Creek park was chosen thanks to the new cricket batting cages, the first in any city park in the state of Georgia.

The 12-over-innings games were played following the Atlanta Cricket League rules and under the direction of

the umpires, Kaushik Basu, Somnath Dey and Raja Gautam Kar. Four teams — ICC, Rongbaaj, Super Strikers and Bengal Tigers — participated in the round robin tournament led by their respective captains — Saurav Deb Roy, Anindya Chakrabarti, Abhijit Saha and Arup Dhar.

Chattahoochee High grad wins international design competition in Munich MUNICH, Germany — Johns Creek native Hope Kemp-Hanson received top honors Nov. 14 in a design competition sponsored by Adidas.

Kemp-Hanson is a graduate of Chattahoochee High School and a fashion student at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

The Adidas Woolmark Performance Challenge is an annual global competition that challenges students to use Australian Merino wool to design products for the sports and performance market.

Out of over 1,000 participants from more than 21 countries, Kemp-Hanson took home joint-first place and was only one of two Americans selected as a top 10 finalist.

Kemp-Hanson received her award at the final event Nov. 14 in Munich, Germany. Kemp-Hanson received a threemonth internship with Adidas, a professional international training workshop and the opportunity to pitch and sell her concepts to global brands.

For her winning entry, KempHanson blended the edginess of urban streetwear with the functionality of skateboarding equipment and Australian Merino wool to innovate a line of hidden impact protection.

In a league of its own In many ways, the Mazda CX-5 is on par with the rest of the compact crossover market. The same can be said of the Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav4, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson or Nissan Rogue.

But what you can’t measure with numbers or statistics is where the CX-5 shines. In almost every way, the Mazda simply feels to be on another level.

For instance, the CX-5 is not just a mover of people and things, it is a stunningly attractive crossover that is a joy to drive.

While some compact crossovers have Novocain-inspired steering, the Mazda is precise and responsive whether the CX-5 is traversing a parking lot or a

2019 Mazda CX-5 winding road. All models come standard with Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus, which works in tandem with the engine to make small power adjustments to shift the CX-5’s weight for an optimal cornering.

The ride quality is also superb. The Mazda soaks up bumps and lumps in asphalt with ease, but the suspension is balanced to keep the CX-5 poised and level when it is pushed through undulations.

Three engine models are available, including a 2.2-liter diesel and either a naturally aspirated or turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The turbocharged engine is reason enough to spring for one of the three higher trims (Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve or Signature), which also adds all-wheel drive as standard or as an option on Grand Touring models.

The turbo four is as peppy as a wellrested and caffeinated toddler, giving drivers immediate responses off the line or at low to midrange RPMs. While the naturally aspirated engine is also peppy, it leaves some power to be desired on

The interior is another area in which the CX-5 outshines its competitors in feel. All materials are top-rate, and the design excels in ease of use. You cannot really quantify it, but the Mazda just feels and looks good.

Why This Republican and Local Business Leader is Supporting Erin Elwood for Johns Creek City Council I have been a Republican since 1988 when I voted in my first election for George H.W. Bush. As a college student, I subscribed to National Review, The American Spectator and The Conservative Chronicle. A youthful independent streak led me to subscriptions to Reason Magazine and Mother Jones.

Fairly recently I finished reading a book by Timothy Carney, Alienated America. I bought it based on the sub title that struck me: Why Some Places Thrive While Others Collapse. Immediately after reading it I texted the Mayor and entire City Council and urged them to get a copy and read the book as the lack of social cohesion and community connection that Carney describes could be lifted right from our current political divide in Johns Creek.

While local elections throughout the state are non-partisan, in today’s hyper-partisan world party politics reaches every level of our electoral system. Many voters only look at a candidate’s party affiliation before he/she examines a candidate’s views. Despite my Republican credentials, my belief in strong, vibrant local communities is dragging me to a more “Democrat” position. I want strong schools, increased greenspace and parks, great roads, safe bridges and sidewalks. Most importantly, I want a sense of community that fosters cooperation and even compromise at times. It bothers me that in today’s Johns Creek, a wing of the Republican Party has made these values seem antithetical to what it means to be “Republican”.

Johns Creek has been in existence since 2006. The first chapter is complete, and Johns Creek has done well. The second chapter is now upon us and we must elect leaders who understand what governing a city in 2020 truly entails. Back in the day, we could take it for granted that our subdivisions and our schools were permanently at the top of the market. However, competition from our neighbors and the new economy will force us to compete. We need leaders who will compete for the residents and businesses of tomorrow.

Surprisingly, these improvements are not sought after by everyone in Johns Creek. A tiny group of NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) have created an environment not of just “no” but “ HELL, NO.” This is the group that screams for traffic solutions if the fix is in another neighborhood; they believe roundabouts, proven to be safe and navigable worldwide, are too “complicated” for Johns Creek residents; and, they insist that voters were “duped” in the TSPLOST vote thus the vote and its projects should be abrogated.

“HELL NO” is the carrying the day in our city. Although it is a tiny minority screaming “No,” this volume is being mistaken for consensus. Fortunately, residents like myself who want to build on our early successes have an opportunity to reverse this trend with December 3rd’s elections.

I had the privilege of speaking for almost 90 minutes with each of the three candidates in one of the races: Judy LeFave, Erin Elwood, and Issure Yang. I supported Judy LeFave in November as she most closely lined up with my right of center beliefs. I was disappointed that Judy did not make the runoff.

Having said that, and as mentioned above, I spent considerable time with Erin Elwood both before and after the election. She is a thoughtful, intelligent candidate who shares a vision for our city that aligns with my desire for a growing and vibrant Johns Creek. She recognizes the danger of the “HELL NO” crowd and understands how to leverage our incredible natural resources for our growing and prosperous city. No city or community has been successful long term with the “pull up the draw bridge” perspective from this “HELL NO” crowd.

Fellow Republicans, issues should govern this election. We are for limited government; not a government that turns its back on people with an intractable disinterest. We are for a government that can help create a world class city; not for simply being critics who say “No” without judgment and discernment.

We must make decisions not simply based on our own selfish interests, but at times based on what is best for our entire city. We must choose leaders who will be informed and use their best judgment to make decisions based not on which neighborhood can scream the loudest but based on the rule of law and what is best for the entire community. Erin Elwood supports building a city we would want to raise our families in and that we would be proud to bring our friends and neighbors to.

On December 3rd we must elect good people who will support the values that will allow our community of Johns Creek to continue to thrive.

So much easier to give help, than to ask for it Change is hard. The status quo is “security” to most of us. So, when we have to deal with change, it can be stressful.

This week I almost had a panic attack. I was atRay appen tending the annual Publisher Emeritus ray@appenmediagroup.com recognition celebration breakfast for North Fulton Community Charities and was reminded that Executive Director Barbara Duffy, the guiding light, head cheerleader, moral compass and community advocate is retiring at the end of this year. She will officially step back from the organization she has led for the past 35 years. Holly York is taking over and stepping into shoes that will be so difficult to fill.

Barbara has always seemed like a force of nature to me — constant, unstoppable, unflappable, and, well, always there. She has also represented to me the best example of integrity and virtue that I know. “Grace” and “compassion” also come to mind.

“It’s not about me,” is what I am going to hear from her when she sees this

column. “It’s about helping those who need to be helped — not about me.” I am sure I will be admonished.

The event was held at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church and was attended by probably a hundred or more folks. Breakfast was served and awards were given out to people and organizations who gave their time, their money, their energy, their care, and their love because they wanted to contribute — and because Barbara asked them to.

Data Scan, with their new location in City Center in downtown Alpharetta was named Corporate Partner of the Year. In addition to giving their time, their energy and their interest, Data Scan’s parent company JM Enterprises wrote a check for $50,000 to NFCC. They believe in Barbara and her work and feel a responsibility to support the community.

The Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce received the “Civic Partner of the Year.” I cannot think of a time when the Chamber hasn’t been “all in” for anything and everything that Barbara has needed. She brings out the best in everyone.

The Faith Partner of the Year went to Cross of Life Lutheran Church for all their support, especially their ongoing housing of the homeless when temperatures drop. They open up their church to

give people without warmth or shelter a place to sleep.

Barbara’s NFCC was founded by a coalition of faith-based organizations, and through the years so many churches, synagogues and mosques have always stepped up when NFCC and Barbara ring the alarm.

Volunteer of the year Mark Owens, a retired Norfolk Southern executive, warned the audience that it only takes one day of volunteering at North Fulton Community Charities to get hooked. “I retired and then traveled for 10 days,” he said. “After I got home, I didn’t know what to do. Now I’m volunteering four days a week at North Fulton Community Charities and having a lot more fun than I ever had at work. I’ve seen enough ramen noodles and green beans to feed a couple armies. It’s when I’m helping serve those who come because they don’t have money for food and we feed them, and I get that sometimes almost unnoticeable smile on their face, that I feel that my work is paid in full.”

The last speaker was hard, really hard to listen to. She was a dignified, middle-aged woman. You could have heard a pin drop.

“I was in corporate,” she said. “I worked in tech, and in the ’80s I lived

in Roswell and I actually volunteered at NFCC. I was young and well paid. I had great benefits including health care.

I was married and raising a family. I worked hard and earned my way.

“Then came my divorce; then the layoff; then my job search that went on and on; then my 401(k) money ran out and my credit cards were maxed out.”

She tried to continue speaking but was unable. Finally, she regained her composure.

“I knew if I just kept focused and kept working the minimum wage jobs that I was able to find and kept applying for a job that paid a living wage — one that would let me earn enough to pay the rent and feed and support my two girls — it would come. It didn’t. I hit a wall that I couldn’t pass. I was desperate. It took every ounce of what little courage I had left to swallow my pride and ask North Fulton Community Charities for help — for food. In my wildest dreams I never imagined that the person showing up on NFCC’s doorstep would be me, but it was.

“It’s so much easier to help people,” she shared with the audience, “than to ask for help.”

residents are living a paycheck or two away from homelessness, according to Barbara.

“With Barbra’s help, we managed to keep a roof over our heads, and I kept working until I actually was offered my old job back — but at a ton less money,” the woman recounted. “At that time, I had run up a $78,000 credit card bill and emptied my 401(k), but we had shelter, health care again, and I had a decent job.

I eventually paid off every penny of that credit card debt and was starting to save again when the business slowed down, and I lost my job for the second time.”

Seven percent of the population in North Fulton lives below the poverty line according to Barbara. Last year NFCC helped over 4,000 families — 10,000 people — with food, shelter, counseling, clothing, and comfort.

The woman said that after being laid off a second time, “I had to swallow my pride, and I found myself with no one to turn to again but North Fulton Community Charities. They are helping me now.

I am back looking for full-time employment and working part time. I am using some of my spare time to volunteer at NFCC. “All I want to do is earn my way and support myself. I don’t want charity. I’m willing to work hard. But right now, North Fulton Community Charities is my lifeboat. I thank all of you in this audience this morning for your kindness, your generosity and willingness to help others who really don’t want to have to ask for your help, but must.”

It is the working poor, Barbara said, who constitute the majority of NFCC’s clientele — people with a job or multiple Crossword jobs who are just hanging on.

“They’ve done everything right most of the time and circumstances are just not working out,” she said.

car they use to get to their job. It’s that tight for so many.

I already feel a loss that is difficult to describe knowing that Barbara is retiring. At the same time, I know that her work will not stop when she rides off into the sunset. NFCC will continue to be there to help when there is no one else — especially if you continue your support. I am sure that Barbara’s spirit will still be here all around us, watching and pushing and making sure that everyone who needs help will get it. And don’t forget, everyone who volunteers just one day at North Fulton Community Charities, says Mark, will be hooked forever.

Headwinds buffet Georgia’s job growth outlook

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Georgia’s 2019 job gains have fluctuated wildly from expectations – the result of a host of economic factors, according to Rajeev Dhawan of the Economic Forecasting Center at Georgia State University’s Robinson College of Business.

One-time events, an ongoing global slowdown, the U.S.Chinese trade spat, and a deteriorating domestic investment climate have created unusually large deviations from average monthly job gain expectations, Dhawan said.

“Monthly job creation numbers always DHAWAN fluctuate, just like monthly rainfall totals, and rarely is there a month that hits the so-called average mark,” Dhawan said. “However, it’s rare to see three negative growth months out of nine, without a special reason.”

Speaking at his quarterly “Forecast of Georgia and Atlanta” Nov. 20, Dhawan highlighted some of the fluctuations.

Georgia gained 23,200 jobs in the first quarter of 2019, followed by only 300 job gains in the second quarter, then roared back with 29,100 jobs in the third quarter of the year.

From October 2018 to January 2019, Georgia added 39,100 jobs – a 33 percent boost to the 2018 monthly jobs creation pace of 7,400 — with 20,800 of those gains in retail trade, hospitality and administrative services (proxy for temporary jobs). These service sectors account for 30 percent of the state’s employment base, but they produced 53 percent of job additions during those four months.

When the events were over, the three sectors shed 6,200 of the 9,700 jobs lost in March and April, Dhawan said.

The forecaster examined premium job creation in the state’s catalyst sectors — corporate, technology and manufacturing. The three account for roughly a quarter of Georgia’s employment base, pay well above the median wage, and lead to demand for products and services, resulting in jobs in supporting sectors. One support sector, transportation, warehousing and utilities, has added only 700 jobs in the first three quarters of 2019 despite the growth of e-commerce.

“If the global slowdown, coupled with a strong dollar, reduces demand for Georgia

exports, we will produce less, which will show up in the performance of the state’s manufacturing sector and employment growth in the Savannah metro area,” said Dhawan. “The global growth climate is so bad that Savannah-based Gulfstream announced it will lay off 362 people at its main facility in coming weeks. Loss of these high paying jobs is never good for the metro area where they happen.”

Local numbers tell own story Meanwhile, two other recently released housing reports show a leveling of the economic prosperity Metro Atlanta has enjoyed much of the past decade.

Zumper, which tracks apartment rental rates across the country, reported apartment rents in the Atlanta area are no longer climbing by leaps and bounds.

Alpharetta ranks fifth in priciest apartments, with a one-bedroom averaging $1,320 a month in October. That’s a drop of 1 percent from October 2018.

Roswell, by comparison, is much cheaper and ranks 14th in price among metro area cities. The $1,020 rent on a onebedroom is down 3 percent year over year.

Atlanta has the priciest average cost to rent at $1,430 a month, followed by Decatur, then Brookhaven and Sandy Springs.

Of note, the average cost of an apartment in Brookhaven, $1,380 for a one-bedroom, is a 9 percent drop from last year. That’s

by far the greatest decline among the 18 metro cities included in the study.

Another housing study released last week shows that 6 percent of millennial renters in the Atlanta metro expect to rent forever.

The Apartment List study also showed that of the millennials who expect to buy a home, 48 percent have yet to start saving toward a down payment.

Good news for parents is that millennials are looking for less support — $10,000 last year vs. $9,000 this year.

College rivalries sometimes hit too close to home Thanksgiving is now over, or about to be over, and us Georgia Bulldog fans are getting ready to see if we can avoid a year-long brag-fest from those engineers who graduated in downtown Atlanta.

They enjoy every second and make sure us Dawg fans know about it every day for an entire year.

My two boys were blessed with the pleasure of growing up in a Georgia Bulldog house. Some might call it brainwashing, but I just assumed being as smart as they are, they looked around at a very early age, and made a wise choice.

And once they made that choice, it was my duty as a dad to indulge them.

It has been a great ride. We work together to find new reasons not to like our main rivals — the Jackets, the Gators and the Tigers. (My5th grade son, to show you he grew up in a different time, actually hates Alabama more than either of those

As fun as it’s been, lately there have been a few signs that we may have gone a bit too far. The first was a couple years ago. My older son’s Odyssey of the Mind team competed in the World Championship. After four days of hanging out with some of the smartest students from around the world, he had something stuck on his mind. I pushed for him to spit it out.

Covered in guilt, he said, “um, Dad….uh, have you ever heard of a school called Harvard?”

You see, when I said UGA was the best school in the country, he assumed that meant in every aspect of what a school is.

He’s a very smart boy, he’s not the biggest football fan and in his practical mind, when you say “best school,” he automatically thinks in terms of academics.

I fumbled for a response and eventually said matter-of-factly that Harvard didn’t have a good football team. He just nodded his head slowly and looked at me blankly. Almost like he was noticing for the first time that I really wasn’t as smart as I had made myself out to be.

I leveled with him and told him about Harvard and said if he ever got in and wanted to go there, we’d see what we could do. And that we wouldn’t hold anything against him.

The second thing that happened was again after an Odyssey of the Mind World Tournament. If you don’t know, Odyssey is a team competition where students engineer some sort of problem and then have to act out a skit involving that problem. My son’s team won the world championship, and coming away from it I made the comment that Georgia Tech has one of the best engineering programs in the world.

My son looked at me like I had said something treasonous. I am about as hardcore of a Georgia fan as they come.

But I do understand that you can do a lot worse than having an engineering degree from Tech. And I think he will understand that too.

My younger, fifth grade son though — no chance. He’s gone. If I ever even have an Alabama game on in our house,

his face gets red and he demands that I change the channel.

Atlanta has become a hub for college football, and I imagine these sorts of dilemmas are playing out in houses across the entire metro area. Michigan families have the same issues with Ohio State, Texas with Oklahoma. Notre Dame with everyone else.

Our city leaders did a great job of positioning Atlanta as a leader in sports, especially college football. In 2014 we wrangled the College Football Hall of Fame away from South Bend, Ind., and put it somewhere where people can actually visit it.

It’s rivalry weekend gang. Good luck to you and your team, so long as they are not Georgia Tech.

you are optimizing your efforts and will also make a big difference in the number of opportunities you win. There are basically three strategies you can use.

The first is called a “frontal” strategy, because it focuses on your ability to differentiate what you are offering based on your reputation, the uniqueness of your product or service, and the price you charge. If the decision-makers view your product and service as unique, you most likely will win regardless of price. If you

are the low-cost vendor, then also you have a better chance of winning.

If you can’t compete with a frontal strategy, a “flanking strategy” is the next best option. Using a flanking strategy requires that you change the “buying criteria” to include things that favor your product or service. Adding additional capabilities or features, changing terms, providing incentives or committing top resources are some of the ways to do this.

Vampires, Werewolves and PDT

By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta On a certain day in autumn, your front stoop may be besieged by children dressed as super heroes, vampires or werewolves.

Dr. Taylor This trick or treating tradition dates back to the early 1920’s. The legend of vampires and werewolves, however, are much older: having been mentioned throughout the Middle Ages and possibly even in the Epic of Gilgamesh from around 1800BCE. But what brought about these terrifying tales? Medicine allows for some intriguing hypotheses about how the vampire and werewolf legends arose.

And, interestingly, if you or a loved one has severe sun damage or skin cancer, this information may be pertinent to your health.

A class of disease called “porphyria” (pronounced poor-fear-ee-uh) may be the source of vampire and werewolf legends. Porphyrias are diseases in which someone’s body has problems making “heme,” which is the pigment that makes our blood red. Heme is a complex molecule. It contains an iron atom and a protein called a “porphyrin” (pronounced poor-for-in). Heme holds onto oxygen and allows our blood to take oxygen where it needs to go.

Porphyrins are made by our bodies in eight steps. Your body starts by making a chemical called ALA (aminolevulinic acid). Then, seven enzymes make changes to ALA to ultimately create heme.

Each change creates a different porphyrin. If a single enzyme is defective, then the ALA or porphyrins that the enzyme was supposed to work on start to build up. Similar to the I Love Lucy episode in which Lucille Ball cannot keep up at the chocolate factory, porphyrins start to build up on the assembly line and create a mess.

Depending on which enzyme goes bad, different porphyrins will build up and cause different diseases. For the most part, these excess porphyrins cause disease in two organ systems: the nervous system and the skin.

The nervous system can be damaged leading to chronic pain and even seizures. But it is particularly porphyria’s effect on the skin, hair and teeth that may form the origin of a few of folklore’s legendary creatures.

Certain porphyrias can make someone’s skin so sensitive to sun light that the person’s skin is excruciatingly painful as soon as they walk out of the shade. The skin can literally

blister after a few minutes in the sun.

In some types of porphyria, even small amounts of sun can, over time, lead to thickening and scarring of the skin and thick dark excess hair growth over the affected areas. Even without sun exposure, the teeth can turn red (called “erythrodontia”). Psychosis is sometimes an additional neurologic effect.

Taken together, it is easy to see how conditions that can make the teeth turn red, make someone nocturnal due to pain in sunlight, and occasional excess hair growth and scarring could have led to vampire or werewolf legends.

Medical literature debates whether these diseases can completely explain the legends. However, legends are often a synthesis of different fears and observations. Even if no specific individual had all the signs and symptoms in combination to perfectly mimic a vampire or werewolf, it is certainly plausible that this family of diseases in combination contributed to the development of the vampire and werewolf myths.

While it may not sound appealing to be a vampire for a day, one of modern dermatology’s treatments for precancers called actinic keratoses takes advantage of the porphyrin metabolic pathways to achieve lower rates of skin cancer. Photodynamic therapy (also known as PDT and blue light therapy) works because the physician essentially causes unhealthy cells to develop porphyria for a day. Aminolevulanic acid (the ALA mentioned above) is painted on sun-damaged areas. Unhealthy cells absorb the ALA and become exquisitely sun-sensitive.

Healthy cells absorb little medicine.

After painting ALA on the skin, the physician exposes the skin to blue light, which activates the ALA in the unhealthy cells causing the unhealthy cells to be hurt and killed. PDT and other therapies such as 5-fluorouracil and imiquimod are important tools in the dermatologist’s armamentarium for combatting pre-cancers and preventing skin cancer.

William & Reed tennis player signs with Lee University JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Hayden Smith, a senior at William & Reed Academy in Johns Creek, committed to play tennis at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn.

Smith has been swinging a tennis racquet since she was barely big enough to hold it and played nearly 500 matches over her career so far. Playing at the collegiate level has been a lifelong dream, she said.

She will join the Lee University Flames women’s tennis team next fall under the direction of Coach Patric Hynes.

As a William & Reed Warrior scholarathlete, Smith was a finalist in the 2019 Georgia Independent School Association III Individual State Tournament, and she received the MVP award from Coach Carter McKenzie during her sophomore and junior years.

Smith has been coached by Charles Byrd since 2012 and currently trains with him as well as the other coaches of Darko Byrd Tennis Academy. In addition to her coaches, Smith thanked her parents, Todd and Dabney Smith, her sister, her extended family, her teachers and her friends for their support and guidance.

Button placement is intuitive, and the rotating control knob is ideal for quick inputs. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard above the base models, and the three highest trims get a 10-speaker Bose audio system.

Safety features include blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane departure warning and radar cruise control with stop and go, and Signature models come standard with a 360-degree view monitor.

Though prices are slightly higher in some trims for 2020 models, frontwheel drive CX-5’s in Sport trim start at $24,350. Opting for all-wheel drive in lower trims bumps the price by $1,400.

Most buyers will probably find their comfort zone, in the Touring ($26,615 with front-wheel drive) or Grand Tour-

ing ($30,045 with all-wheel drive). Those wanting a bit more of a luxury feel can spring for the Signature trim ($36,890) I tested.

The top trim adds the aforementioned Nappa leather seats and 360-degree camera system along with layered wood trim, satin chrome interior accents, a black headliner, LED lighting, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and other features.

New 2020 models are set to go on sale soon and will add Mazda’s i-Activsense safety features on all models, a 1-inch larger touchscreen in higher trims and the turbocharged engine has received a slight boost in torque.

While the CX-5 outshines other compact crossovers in most areas, one area where it is lacking is cargo room.

The Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav4 and Nissan Rogue offer between 37- and 40-cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats, the CX-5 maxes out at 31-cubic feet.

But if you can live with less space in the rear and go beyond the numbers, the Mazda is simply in another league in compact market.
