Police arrest teenager for driving stolen vehicle JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested an 18-year-old Oct. 2 for driving a stolen vehicle. Police had been patrolling on State Bridge Road near West Morton Road, when an officer spotted a car that had been reported stolen.

Police pursued the driver through a nearby residential neighborhood while the driver made sharp turns as if to elude officers, police said.

Three other teenagers were in the car.

When police stopped the car, they said they could smell marijuana inside.

The driver was arrested for theft by receiving stolen property and possession of tools for the commission of a crime.

A passenger was also arrested for possession of tools for the commission of a crime.

Truck stolen overnight from resident’s driveway JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police Oct. 6 after his new truck had been stolen from his driveway on Oxford Mill Circle. The man said he had parked his car the previous evening, but it was gone that morning.

The owner provided video footage showing someone taking his truck at 2 a.m.

The owner was able to track the vehicle to an address in Stone Mountain.

DeKalb County police responded to the area and recovered the truck.

Homeowner reports theft after cleaning service visit JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating an incident in which two items were stolen from a house on Cabotage Road.

The owner of the house said she had hired a service to clean her house on Sept. 19 and 20. When she returned to her home on Sept. 20, the woman said she was unable to find a decorative item worth $250 and a tablet worth $350.

The cleaning service initially said they would arrange a meeting with the maid who had cleaned the woman’s house. The woman later received a call that the maid had been fired. She was unable to gather any information about the maid.

Burglar takes cell phone from owner’s vehicle JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating the report of vehicle burglaries that occurred Oct. 6 at a home on Bannergate Drive.

The owner said he had parked his car in the garage shortly after midnight and went to bed. Both cars in the garage were left unlocked and the garage door was left open.

At about 9 a.m., the owner returned to the garage and saw that one car door was slightly ajar. Both cars had been rummaged through. An $800 cell phone was missing from one car.

Man alerted to fraud after wallet stolen JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police Sept. 30 after his bank alerted him to two fraud attempts.

The man had dropped his son off at school that morning when he received a notice from his bank about two fraudulent uses of his card at a Lawrenceville Walmart early that morning. The total charges were for $1,000.

The man reviewed security footage at his house on Pinnacle Pointe and found video of a man entering his truck at 2 a.m. The wallet had been kept in the center console of the truck.

First TSPLOST project moves to construction

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Nearly three years after voters opted to increase their sales tax to fund transportation projects, the Johns Creek City Council has approved the first construction contract.

“We’ve been a little slow to the draw, but we had an opportunity to approve tonight our first TSPLOST project to move forward,” Mayor Mike Bodker said.

“It’s kind of a momentous occasion.”

The contract, approved on the consent agenda Oct. 7, is for the intersection of Bell Road at McGinnis Ferry. The lowest bidder, CMES Inc., was awarded $1.725 million for construction, with inspection services awarded to BM&K for $90,000.

The project is to extend the northbound right-turn lane on Bell Road and to add through lanes on McGinnis Ferry.

“I know many of us, while we may not agree on the method, we can agree traffic kind of stinks here in Johns Creek and throughout Metro Atlanta,” Bodker said. “This will be one step forward, hopefully, to improving both safety, which we call operational improvements, and congestion relief.”

This intersection is part of a cluster of projects, originally estimated to cost $7 million total, for the Bell-Boles corridor. Bell and Boles road form a “Y” that connects residential neighborhoods, parks — including the to-be-developed Cauley Creek Park — and Shakerag Elementary and River Trail Middle schools.

The Johns Creek City Council and Public Works officials symbolically break ground on the first project funded by the transportation sales tax, or TSPLOST, to move to construction. The construction contract for intersection improvements at Bell Road and McGinnis Ferry was approved nearly three years after voters approved the sales tax referendum in 2016.

The project also includes adding a pedestrian bridge over the Chattahoochee on the north side of the roadway and traffic signal upgrades at Camden Way and St. Georgen Common.

If approved, the contract will be for $4 million also with CMES, while inspection will be with Moreland Altobelli for $189,000. The city has also set aside a contingency fund of 10 percent of the total project for unforeseen circumstances.

The cost of the bridge projects is being shared with Gwinnett County. Fulton County is shouldering the cost of waterline relocation, and Johns Creek received a $1.5 million grant from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank.

Early voting begins Oct. 15 JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Early voting for the Johns Creek City Council races began Oct. 15 and will run through Nov. 1.

Early voting runs through Saturday, Oct. 26 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Monday Oct. 28 to Friday, Nov. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There will be one day of Saturday voting, no Sunday voting, and no voting the Monday before Election Day. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

For early voting, voters can cast their ballot at any location in the county.

For most Johns Creek residents the most convenient voting location will be

Three Johns Creek residents compete for vacant City Council Post 2 JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Voters will decide who will fill three Johns Creek City Council seats Nov. 5.

In Johns Creek, all City Council members represent the city at-large, and terms are four years. Voters can check their registration and locate their polling place at mvp.sos.ga.gov.

Three candidates will be running for Post 2, which will be vacated by Councilman Jay Lin at the end of the year.

Here is a closer look at those candidates.

Royce Reinecke Royce Reinecke was born in Minneapolis and grew up in Puerto Rico. He studied engineering and construction management at the University of Michigan and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

REINECKE His career in project management took him to California, Arkansas, Iowa, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C., but he has called the Johns Creek area his home base since 1979. With two daughters, Reinecke and his wife Nancy were involved in the PTA and in academic bowl coaching.

As an engineer and project manager, Reinecke helped to grow an engineering firm from four to more than 450 employees, providing engineering, operations, maintenance and management services to electric power utilities that owned commercial nuclear power stations.

He later worked as a consultant for large engineering organizations and served as a senior legislative aide on national energy policy to Rep. George Radanovich on the U.S House Energy and Commerce Committee.

“For the past 10 years, I have attended Johns Creek City Council meetings and offered my expertise and insights, which has led to a number of positive actions by council,” Reinecke said.

Reinecke was active in the community input stage of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan, Parks Plan, numerous zoning cases and tax and budget matters. He also served for three years on the Board of Zoning Appeals, which makes final decisions on zoning and stream buffer variances.

“As a result, I have the deepest understanding of city issues of all the candidates for Post 2,” Reinecke said. “By serving on council, I will be able to contribute more directly to make Johns Creek even better by ensuring that our large backlog

of TSPLOST, parks, stormwater and other projects are completed on time, on budget and meet community expectations.”

Dilip Tunki A Johns Creek area resident for 19 years, Dilip Tunki says he is running because he cares deeply about the community and would like to contribute to the progress of our city.

His focus is on susTUNKI taining and enhancing quality of life factors for people living and working in Johns Creek, creating economic development and working in the direction of driving the City of Johns Creek toward becoming an energy-efficient city.

His expertise in corporate leadership, governance, project management, operations, finance, engineering and community-based leadership will ensure that key decisions will be made for our city to encompass the growth and long-term plan for the entire community.

He gained insight into the City of Johns Creek through Leadership Johns Creek, the Citizens Fire Academy and Citizens Police Academy. For the past three years he has been on the School Governance

Council for Chattahoochee High School, and he was also a member of City of Johns Creek Construction Board of Appeals.

Dilip Tunki is a proud resident of Johns Creek, lives with his wife Padma and daughter Sindhu.

Brian Weaver Brian Weaver is recently retired from the Johns Creek Police Department after a long career of dedicated service in law enforcement.

Born and raised in Athens, Ga., Weaver graduated from the WEAVER University of Georgia and went on to receive his masters from Columbus State College in public administration.

He began his law enforcement career with the Fulton County Police Department and moved up the ranks from police officer to captain with many leadership roles including in the Uniform Patrol Division and Criminal Investigation Division.

He retired from the Fulton County Police Department in January 2008 to become a member of the inaugural police squad with the Johns Creek Police

Serving the community is in Brian’s DNA. He has spent his entire career dedicated to protecting the citizens of Georgia and wants to bring his knowledge, integrity and professionalism to the Johns Creek City Council.

“Following in the footsteps of Jay Lin will certainly be challenging, but I’m prepared and believe I have what it takes to work with the other members of council to genuinely represent each citizen of Johns Creek.” Weaver said. “Running for public office is new to me, but I intend to work hard to earn every vote I receive on Nov. 5.”

Brian Weaver lives in Johns Creek with his wife Patricia. They have two sons, Brian Jr. and Antoine and three granddaughters, Simone, Luna and Olivia.

Habitat for Humanity launches women’s build FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Habitat for Humanity of North Central Georgia has launched its inaugural complete Women Build 2020 project.

Women from around North Fulton, Cherokee and Forsyth Counties have come together to raise $90,000 and build an entire house from the ground up for a family in need.

Fundraising is underway now, and construction on the Forsyth County home will begin in February 2020.

To date, more than 50 percent of the fundraising goal has been met.

“We are grateful for the individual donors and corporate sponsors including, Amazon and Travelers Insurance, who have invested in the Women Build project to date,” Habitat North Central Georgia Board Member Kelly Shrout said. “We invite other leading companies in our community to join this exciting endeavor in support of women in our community.”

Michael Stafford of Travelers Insurance said the company is proud so sponsor the project.

“This project is a perfect opportunity for Travelers’ women to leverage their strengths, cultivate development and enhance awareness of women as a vital resource to Travelers and the community,” she said.

The Women Build project is unique in that it goes beyond just fundraising and construction.

“In addition to serving on the construction site, members involved in the Women Build project participate in monthly meetings featuring keynote speakers presenting on women-focused topics related to health, finance, confidence and more,” Women Build Chair Laura Lilly said.

Pass rate for Advanced Placement test rises while participation falls Fulton Schools focus on college ready students

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com Nearly three out of four Fulton School System students did well enough on their 2019 Advanced Placement exams to potentially earn college credits for their efforts.

The College Board administers AP exams each spring to students enrolled in AP courses. Exam scores range from 1 to 5, with a 3 considered the minimum score to earn college credit in introductory courses.

The percentage of Fulton students scoring a 3 or higher on the college-level AP exams increased by 1 point to a 71.4 percent pass rate this year. The number of tests given, however, declined by about 10 percent from 2018.

“I’m pleased to see so many students challenge themselves with Advanced Placement’s college-level rigor,” School Superintendent Mike Looney said.

“These curriculum opportunities help prepare our college-bound students for more academic success.”

All eight North Fulton high schools averaged above the district pass rate of 71.4

percent. Two North Fulton high schools, Chattahoochee and Northview, had more than 90 percent of their AP exams result in a score of 3, 4 or 5. Johns Creek High School was close behind with 86.3 percent of students scoring at least a 3.

Milton and Alpharetta high schools had the highest number of test takers — more than 1,100 students at each school – with a pass rate of 74.5 and 76.1, respectively.

While passing the AP exam is the end goal, participation in AP See courses is a key factor in page 10 college admissions where a “rigor based” course load in high school is desirable, according to college counselors.

“Colleges look at AP, International Baccalaureate (IB) and honors courses available at the applicant’s schools, and whether the student availed themselves of those opportunities,” said Andrew Belasco, CEO of College Transitions, a Georgia-based firm specializing in college admissions counseling.

This year’s freshman class at the University of Georgia took an average of nine AP courses while in high school. At schools in the Ivy League and among highly competitive schools, the number averaged 15.

While access to AP courses is a district goal, making sure students are academically prepared for the rigor of a collegelevel courses is important, Jones noted.

“The work the district has done with the Standards Mastery Framework and professional development…provides teachers with instructional strategies to build student knowledge before getting to AP classes,” Jones said.

The ABC’s of AP Ask any college admissions counselor about how many Advanced Placement classes a high school student should take and the pat answer will generally be “the more the better.” But quantity and quality of outcome are not always the same.

The goal is always to max out the potential for the high school, said Andrew Belasco, CEO of College Transitions (www. collegetransitions.com), which focuses on college planning and admission counseling.

For instance, if your high school offers only a limited number of AP courses (there are 34 in total), this will not work against you as long as you take advantage of the opportunities, he noted.

Attending a high school teeming with AP options — which describes nearly every public high school in North Fulton — means expectations are raised.

“Whether you’re talking about GPA or standardized tests scores, the goal is always going to be to max out your potential,” said Belasco, a graduate of Georgetown and Harvard, and whose Ph.D. from the University of Georgia focused on college access and admission policies.

When filling out the Common App Secondary School Report (CASSR), high

school guidance counselors rank the rigor of a student’s course load as: Most Demanding, Very Demanding, Demanding, Average, Below Average.

Colleges look at the AP and other high level courses available at the applicant’s schools, and if the student reached for those opportunities. All A’s in an average or below average course load will likely be less valuable than Bs in a most demanding schedule.

The magic formula of admission is elusive, and it changes from year to year, but prospective students should look at the freshman profile for the college they are interested in. For example, the University of Georgia’s class of 2019 averaged six AP courses in high school; the current class of 2023 took an average of nine.

“If you are aiming for a [highly competitive school], you need to be at or very near the top of your graduating class,” explained Belasco. “Which means you’ll need to take as many AP courses as the other academic superstars at your school.”

For the majority of students not aiming for the Ivies but still want a top tier college, he recommends taking AP classes in your areas of interest/strength.

“Try an AP class as a sophomore or as a junior and go from there. If you’re successful, take another AP class or two as a senior,” he said. “This schedule will be rigorous enough to satisfy 99 percent of the nation’s colleges and universities and won’t drive you to the brink of insanity.”

Community EXPO changes shape to draw visitors closer to business

By ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce and Emory Johns Creek Hospital presented the ninth annual Community EXPO on Oct. 10 at the Standard Club on Abbotts Bridge Road.

The free expo was open to residents as a way for nonprofits and local businesses to interact with the community and highlight their services. Chamber members greeted guests upon entry.

Last year, the expo was held at Perimeter Church.

“This is our ninth year doing this event, and it’s our third venue that we’ve tried,” said Robin Buckley, member services director for the chamber.

“We have always pretty much been at capacity…we usually get a good response.”

The expo was reformatted this year in the hopes of better representing each exhibitor. The event was held on a Thursday instead of the usual Friday date and ran for roughly four hours as opposed to the full day slotted in years past. While the smaller venue reduced the number of vendors, chamber officials said they hoped to create a more inti-

mate setting between the exhibitors and visitors.

“We found that…if everyone has the same size table, it feels very even,” said Laura Houston, executive marketing director for the chamber. “Everybody feels like they’re visible, it’s easy to walk through, and it’s very energetic as opposed to being in a larger venue where it’s more spaced out. This is a way for us to showcase a broad variety of different business to business companies…”

Landscapers, local arts centers, home repair services, banks, schools, health and wellness experts, and nonprofit organizations were among the 51 vendors registered this year. Guests were provided with complimentary appetizers from the club’s chefs and a cash bar.

Many exhibitors provided residents with souvenirs and product samples. Some health and wellness booths brought it a step further with spinal adjustment and blood test demonstrations.

“You’ve got a very diverse cross section of businesses here like us doing health and wellness-related things and other health and wellness professionals,” said Ashland Kayne with Your CBD Store. “A lot of times, these businesses are someone you know you need in those fields, but you don’t know who you

can trust. So this is a great central place for people to come together, get to know one another and see what resources are out there.”

One of the unique vendors registered was Revved Up Kids, a non-profit organization focused on teaching children and teens about public safety and the importance of recognizing sexual predators and attackers.

Co-Founder Alli Neal said events that get the word out to the public are important.

“I think a lot of times the residents don’t realize the resources that are available right in their backyard, and expos like this give people an opportunity to really see the local small businesses that they can be supporting who are supporting their community,” Neal said.

The expo also provided residents an opportunity to get acquainted with City Council hopefuls. Candidate booths included Dilip Tunki, Brian Weaver and Kent Altom.

Ed Harris of Johns Creek was particularly excited to speak with the candidates about relevant local issues.

“I think it’s important for the growth of any community to know what’s going on on an annual basis,” Harris said.

“But I get a chance to meet and talk with business owners, and this year to talk with many of the candidates running for City Council in which I’m able to pose questions about the things I’m concerned about and get direct answers.”

Hotel industry grows in North Atlanta

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com NORTH ATLANTA, Ga. — It appears to be a promising time for the hotel industry in North Atlanta, with some chains undertaking major renovations and more set to enter the market.

Hotel development is following a path forged by expanded business and office growth primarily along I-285 and Ga. 400.

In the Perimeter area, The Crowne Plaza at Ravinia, Embassy Suites on Crown Pointe Parkway and Marriott on Perimeter Center Parkway have all undertaken multi-million-dollar upgrades in the past few years.

“All the hotels have renovations, so we’re going after each other pretty aggressively, but it’s also really cool everything is so new,” said Tim Cahill, director of Sales and Marketing at the Crowne Plaza.

In addition to all the renovation, two new hotels are under construction. A 10-story, 200-room hotel is part of the development going up between Perimeter Mall and the Dunwoody MARTA station, expected to open in late 2020.

An AC Hotel is expected to come to Perimeter Center West in 2021, in a space that used to be a parking lot. It will have the first rooftop bar in Dunwoody, said Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Katie Bishop Williams.

The area could be set to get two more hotels, depending on how zoning petitions play out. On Oct. 15, the Dunwoody Planning Commission will hear proposals for two developments that would include a hotel in addition to restaurant and retail space. One would

The growth in business along Ga. 400 is also adding to hotel inventory.

Alpharetta is home to 25 hotels with another three in the works.

One of the most anticipated is the Cotton House currently under construction downtown. The four-story boutique hotel, just west of Main Street on Milton Avenue, will feature 119 rooms. Demolition work at the site began in late summer.

Alpharetta’s most recent addition, Hotel Avalon, just off Ga. 400, opened in 2018. Bookings in the 330-room hotel stretched well into 2021 when it opened.

as a destination spot for tourists and shoppers, the hotel shares ownership with the city of a conference center that provides 44,000 square feet of flexible event space.

The City of Roswell is currently home to just over a dozen hotels. Four additional hotels are also currently in development — three business class hotels on Westside Parkway and a boutique hotel in the Historic District.

Roswell Inc, the city’s economic development arm, is actively interested in bringing more hotels into the city and has recently launched a second hotel feasibility study in partnership with Visit Roswell, said Roswell Inc Director of Communications and Public Relations Carisa Turner.

Johns Creek, though its business

footprint is notable smaller than its neighbors, can still boast relative growth in its hotel industry. This spring, the city’s third hotel, a Hampton Inn, opened its doors “They’re all in Technology Park, so they stay full with business during the week,” said Shelby Marzen, director of the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s the perfect place for them.”

At the hotel ribbon cutting, Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce Chairman Kent Davies said the new property was good news for the business community and the city. With a shortage of hotels, business was overflowing into Forsyth and Alpharetta, denying the city hotel/ motel tax revenue.

Milton appears to be an exception to the hotel growth trend for now, limited to Springhill Suites near Ga. 400.

The city expects to receive $80,000 in hotel/motel tax revenues in 2020, and those funds are used for the city’s events with the intention of promoting tourism.

While Milton has a limited hotel base, future development near Ga. 400 could open the door for more lodging.

The city recently contracted a consulting firm to study potential business expansion in the city’s Deerfield Parkway area. The firm suggested Milton look to attract mixed-use development in the area, which could build the city’s commercial tax base and draw in residents from other cities. Within the mixed-use drive is the potential for additional hotels.

Northern snakehead comes to town (not good news) Fall is a great time for fishing! As the water begins to cool, many fish seem to go on a feeding frenzy that can make for some memorable days on the water.

No matter what kind of fishing you like to STEVE HUDSON do — fly, spin, bass, Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net trout, or what-haveyou — it really is a great time to be on the water.

But occasionally your catch may be surprising, as happened recently to an angler in Gwinnett County. I don’t know if the intended quarry was bass or catfish or what, but what turned up on the other end of the line was a potentially troublesome fish known as the northern snakehead (Channa argus), an invasive species native to China, Russia and Korea.

These invasive snakeheads have been found in waters in 14 other states, but according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division this is the first time a snakehead has been found in the wild in Georgia.

How do invasive fish become established? It usually starts when exotic spe-

cies are released from aquariums (moral: don’t release your aquarium fish into a lake or stream!) or escape from live food markets.

Why is this discovery a big deal? The fact is that non-native invasive species such as the northern snakehead can adversely impact native species. The invaders compete with the natives for food and habitat, and the outcome is often not good.

We sure don’t want the aquatic equivalent of kudzu to mess up Georgia’s lakes and rivers and streams.

Northern snakeheads grow to nearly three feet in length and are described as “voracious predators” on other species. Should they become established in Georgia waters, that could be bad news for native fish populations. In other

states where the northern snakehead has turned up, the effects have been described as “undesirable, but not extreme.” Exactly what its impact on native Georgia species might be is not known.

There is, however, some good news.

The fact is that anglers across the state can be instrumental in keeping the northern snakehead out of Georgia waters.

First, learn how to identify the northern snakehead. That’s important because its appearance is similar to that of the bowfin, a native Georgia fish that’s found throughout the state. In Georgia, bowfins are good guys. Northern snakeheads are not.

Then, if you think you have caught one, DO NOT RELEASE IT. Georgia DNR puts those words in all caps and bold, and I do too. Instead of releasing it, DNR adds, kill it immediately. That sounds harsh, I know, but this invader has the potential to be that big of a threat. However, don’t just throw it up on the bank. The northern snakehead it is an air-breather and can survive for quite a while (some say for as long as four days) on land. Juveniles are said to be able to migrate over land too.

If you can, take a photo of the fish

(including close-ups of its mouth, fins, and tail) and make a note of where it was caught. Then share that info with Georgia DNR. It’s easy to find the contact info at georgiawildlife.com/ aquatic-nuisance-species by clicking on the “Report it to your regional Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources Division Fisheries Office.”

That same page also has a link to a fact sheet which describes and illustrates the northern snakehead to help you in your identification; it also shows what the native bowfin looks like so you’ll be able to tell the difference.

“Our first line of defense in the fight against aquatic invasive species, such as the northern snakehead, is our anglers,” notes Matt Thomas, chief of fisheries for the Wildlife Resources Division.

He adds, “Thanks to the quick report by an angler, our staff was able to investigate and confirm the presence of this species in this water body [the pond in Gwinnett County]. We are now taking steps to determine if they have spread from this water body and, hopefully, keep it from spreading to other Georgia waters.”

Woodward Academy For the past seven years, every summer Chery Gibson Cobb (former Biology Instructor and Science Department Chair) and Elaine Carroll (former Biology Instructor and current Lower School Assistant Principal) have packed their bags and headed to Costa Rica to teach the Woodward Academy summer school Tropical Ecology Field Study course.

“The trip is a life changing experience,” says Carroll. “Students experience the ecosystems of Costa Rica in all different ways: from above by zip lining through the forest canopy; from below by spelunking the cavernous homes of bats, blind crickets, and tailless whip scorpions; from eye-level by boating through the mangroves to see trees with unique adaptations; and by walking through the forests, both day and night.”

The 11-day, field-based course gives students the chance to conduct handson investigations in some of the richest ecosystems on earth—lowland Caribbean rainforest, highland cloud forest, coastal Pacific rainforest, mangroves, and caves.

In addition to the academic requirements of the course, the trip also has a service learning projects. This past year, one project was in conjunction with the Fundacion Conservacionista

Costarricense, an organization that has pioneered protection and reforestation of the critically endangered habitat on the Pacific slope of Monteverde. The students planted more than 300 trees, were instrumental in providing a wind-break along a ridge, as well as helped expand the wildlife corridor. They learned the importance of the corridor in particular to the Three-Waddled Bellbird, whose numbers have declined dramatically due to the extensive deforestation along their migratory route.

The second project for the students involved working in the gardens at Rancho Margot, an eco-friendly, sustainable ranch. The mission of the ranch is to model and share their sustainable practices with their visitors and their philosophy is simple: “Care to learn. Learn to care.” Students were taught best practices in gardening while tending to growing vegetables and, through handson activities, learned the importance of every aspect of the ranch’s work and how it contributes to the overall mission of sustainability.

Students also had the chance to work with some of the finest biologists and naturalists in Costa Rica (and possibly the world). Dr. Richard Laval, a well known bat biologist who also goes

by the nickname “batman,” showed them the process of capturing bats via mist-netting. Students also worked with Victorino Molina Rojas, a naturalist and one of the founders of the Bellbird Biological Corridor Project. In addition, they had an opportunity to speak with John Sostheim, the owner of Rancho Margot.

Mr. Sostheim, an Atlanta-based architect who had purchased the property and began reforesting it, shared with the group

his vision for the sustainable community and his hopes for the future.

While the group learned so much about the daily practices and challenges of these communities--and had plenty of fun!--above all, they took home a greater understanding of the fragility of our ecosystems, a deeper awareness that we are all connected through the land inhabit, and a thoroughgoing commitment to the future of our planet’s health.

City opens applications for Founders Day Parade JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Neighborhood groups, civic organizations and businesses can apply to enter the 13th Annual Johns Creek Founders Day Parade scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7.

The application is on the city’s website, johnscreekga.gov, and will be accepted through Monday, Nov. 4. As in past years, the theme is “Happy Holidays!”

The Founders Day Parade is a celebration of the city’s incorporation in 2006. The 1.4-mile long parade has grown in popularity with thousands of spectators expected to line the parade route on State Bridge Road this year.

Past parades have included floats built by civic groups, scouts, businesses and homeowners associations. Other participants have included marching bands, entertaining walkers, horse riders, the World Financial Group’s NASCAR racecar, the Oscar-Mayer Wiener-

mobile, the Marine Corps Color Guard, the Feed and Seed Marching Abominables, the Wells Fargo stagecoach, Medieval Times, Shriners units and the Patriot Brass Band.

The city asks parade marchers to remember that there’s only one Santa, and he rides in a fire truck at the end.

Local artists prepare for holiday show, sale

ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell’s Arts Center West will soon its 17th Annual “Works in Clay” holiday show and sale. This event offers local, hand-made ceramic artwork for sale created by more than 40 members of Roswell’s Clay Collective.

Ceramic works in functional, sculptural and whimsical forms will be available for every interest, from gift ideas to serious collectors. Also included this year will be metalwork created by blacksmithing inosswordstructors at the Forge at Art Center West.

The reception for the show will be held Thursday, Dec. 5 from 7-9 p.m. The works will be on display on weekends through Dec. 15.

The show will be held throughout the building at Art Center West, 1355 Woodstock Road in Roswell, adjacent to Leita Solution Thompson Memorial Park.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Arts center opened a new show Oct. 12 entitled “By My Hand: The Work of SelfTaught Artists.”

The exhibition showcases artists active throughout the South who have had little or no formal training.

Alternatively referred to as folk art, vernacular art or outsider art, the work of self-taught artists often possesses a freshness, individuality and highly personal perspective that reflects the artist’s unique vision and need to create,

Curator Althea Foster explained.

In addition to highlighting the work of local artists with growing reputations in the region, the exhibition includes art by nationally recognized self-taught artists such as Howard Finster, Charlie Lucas, Cornbread, Nellie Mae Rowe and Bill Traylor.

There was an opening reception Oct. 12. The exhibition will remain on display through Nov. 16.

In Memoriam

Jody Marlene Court

Jody Marlene Court, age 78, passed away peacefully at her home Wednesday October 2, 2019, after battling ovarian cancer for almost two years.

Jody was born in Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, on April 10, 1941, and was the youngest of six children.

Her father, Russell Young, passed away early in her life and she grew up in the little farm community with her mother, youngest brother and grandmother, who she adored. As Jody used to say, “we didn’t have much but it didn’t matter because we didn’t need anything else”. When she was a teenager her mother remarried and the family moved to Galion, Ohio, where she graduated from high school. After graduation she went to work at North Electric Company in the accounting department and then National Cash Register Corporation in Mansfield, Ohio, where she was responsible for customer billing. While there she met Clarence Fred Court, an NCR repairman.

They fell in love and were married fiftythree years ago. As she was growing up, Jody always dreamed of having kids and eventually becoming a grandmother.

Fred and Jody had two children, Linda and William. Jody was a devoted and loving mother. The family followed Fred’s career from Mansfield to Galion, OH, Cary, NC, Dayton, OH, and finally to Johns Creek, GA where they lived for twenty-seven years. During that time, Linda was married to David Schultz and had three children; Allowyn, Ainsley, and Luke. William married Angela Minnick

and had two children; Annabel and Phillip.

The blessing of five grandchildren was a dream come true for Jody. Her house was filled with pictures of the children in various stages of their lives and she faithfully attended school performances and games.

Jody was famous for dressing up as the fairy godmother at Halloween and for her summer grandma camps. Each child looked forward to her undivided attention for days at a time.

Last year Fred and Jody relocated to Vestavia, Alabama, to be near her family and medical team.

Jody was preceded in death by her parents Russell and Lorena (McDaniel) Young, four brothers; Keith, Dallas, Delbert and Darold Young, and one sister Ardeth Semler.

The family will have a celebration of Jody’s life at Johns Creek United Methodist Church, where she was an active member, greeter, and longtime kitchen angel. The service will be held on Friday, October 18th at 3:00 PM. The internment of her ashes will take place in the church’s memorial garden immediately following.

Johns Creek High School schedules two plays

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek High School will present two shows in October: “Life is Short” and “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later.”

Performances will be Oct. 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. at the school. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and may be purchased at jchstheatre.com.

“Life is Short” is a collection of short plays that take a comical look at relationships from childhood to old age.

Some are charming and light, others dark and absurdist, but all eight gleefully portray people at their worst.

On the more serious side, “The Laramie Project: Ten Year Later” is a drama based of the true story of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming who was beaten to death in 1998.

The crime brought national attention to the town of Laramie, Wyoming.

“The Laramie Project” was written by members of the Tectonic Theatre Project based on more than 200 interviews with the people of the town over the months after Shepard’s murder.

Ten years later, five members of Tectonic returned to Laramie to try to understand the long-term effect of his death. They found a town wrestling with its legacy and its place in history.

In addition to revisiting the folks whose words were included in the original play, the company spoke with the convicted murderers, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, as well as Matthew’s mother, Judy Shepard.

Director Debbie Prost said she was inspired to do the show because she was moved by a choral performance by Coro Vocati entitled “Considering Matthew Shepard.”

“Although I vividly remember the event and the news coverage, my students were not born when it occurred,” Prost said. “I have been so impressed by how they completely delved into all the information they

could find. They fully researched each person represented in the play so they could portray them truthfully.”

Although the original catalyst for the story happened 20 years ago, Prost said the story is as relevant as ever. The “Ten Years Later” version in particular deals with how skewed accounts of a story can become.

“The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later” will also be performed at the Georgia High School Association One Act Play competition at Cambridge High School on Saturday, Oct. 26.
