Family says daughter was victim of homicide JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The family of a Johns Creek teenager found dead in a swimming pool last May says their daughter was the victim of a homicide.

On May 29, the Johns Creek Police Department began an investigation after 17-year-old Centennial High School student Mercedes Chico-Sims was declared missing.

A few hours later, shortly after 10 a.m., maintenance personnel at Atlantic Newtown Apartments on Nesbit Ferry Road found a body in a swimming pool that was later identified as Chico-Sims.

Roswell police investigated the incident and ruled it a suspicious death. Police said at the time that there were signs of trauma.

Woman loses thousands to credit card fraud JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman called police Sept. 8 after she found nearly $20,000 worth of fraudulent purchases and cash advances on her credit card.

The woman first noticed the charges when she attempted to use her card, and it was declined.

The first fraudulent charge was a $2,500 withdrawal on Aug. 22 from a bank. Numerous transactions, worth $18,000 total, were made at Sam’s Club, Home Depot and Wells Fargo. The last fraudulent purchase was made on Aug. 31.

The woman said she never lost or misplaced her credit card. She cancelled the card and alerted her bank and credit bureaus before calling police.

A Roswell resident, 18-year-old Elijah Foster, has been arrested and charged with concealing the death in connection to the incident.

Foster was also charged with statutory rape for what police said is an unrelated case.

Just last week, the parents of Chico-Sims told WSB reporters that their daughter’s death had been ruled as a homicide.

The Fulton County District Attorney’s Office released a statement that it has not yet received the complete autopsy report from the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“Once we receive that report, we will make an official charging decision within 30 days,” the statement read.

Jewelry allegedly stolen from assisted living home JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating the possible theft of jewelry from a woman at an assisted living facility.

The woman was transported to Emory Johns Creek Hospital from an assisted living facility on Aug. 30. While the woman was staying there, her family noted that she wasn’t wearing her wedding ring, another ring and watch, which she routinely wore every day.

When not wearing the jewelry, the family said the woman placed the jewelry by her bedside. But when the family searched the woman’s room, they were unable to find the jewelry.

The assisted living facility director has requested video from the hall camera facing the woman’s room for police to review.

Woman notes fraud on Amazon account

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police met with a Johns Creek woman Sept. 3 who reported that someone has been using her credit card without her authorization.

She said that between Aug. 30-Sept.

2, someone had made $2,300 worth of purchases using the credit card on the her Amazon account.

The items were shipped to addresses in Forest Park and Atlanta.

The woman cancelled the card and contacted Amazon about the fraud before meeting with police.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested a man Sept. 2 whom they suspect is a repeat shoplifter.

Police met with a loss prevention officer at the Target on State Bridge Road that afternoon about a shoplifting incident.

The loss prevention officer said he had recognized a man who had entered

the store that day as a repeat shoplifter and watched him closely. He then saw the man take three shirts and attempt to leave without paying for them.

The loss prevention officer stopped the man and found stolen shirts, worth $100 total, concealed on his person.

The man, later identified as 41-yearold Jeffrey Kustok of Duluth, was arrested on charges of shoplifting.

Man reports $25,000 loan taken out in his name JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police Sept. 3 after he received a letter about a $25,000 loan he did not take out.

Earlier this summer, the man received a letter that he owed at least $3,000 for a personal loan of $25,000.

The letter stated that the loan was made on July 1 for lawn care.

The man said he had not taken any loans out recently.

He is working with LifeLock to clear his credit, and he said he needed a police report to continue the investigation.

Woman receives threats after denying applicant JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating threats made to a woman who disqualified a potential leaser.

The woman was contacted earlier in the month by a man on Craigslist who was interested in leasing her basement apartment.

She texted with the man and scheduled a showing on Sept. 6 shortly before the man told the woman that he wanted to lease the space with a second person.

The woman then cancelled the showing.

Afterward, the woman received a text with a picture of a man pointing a gun at the camera with the message to not “be like that.”

The woman forwarded conversations with the man to police.

City to consider partnership with security camera companies

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. —The Johns Creek City Council is set to decide Sept. 23 whether its police department should enter a memorandum of understanding with Ring and Flock security cameras.

Police Maj. John Clifton briefed the council on the potential benefits of the agreement at a Sept. 9 work session. While council members expressed enthusiasm for the potential public safety benefits, some raised questions about privacy rights.

Ring is a security system that individuals can purchase for their home. Its signature product is the video doorbell, which detects motion when people approach the property and records video footage.

Flock is a safety system for subdivisions. Flock cameras are installed on neighborhood roads to capture still photos of cars and license plates.

The agreement with Ring would allow police officers to access the Neighbors app, which Ring describes as a digital neighborhood watch. Law enforcement

users, who would be clearly identified to resident users, could view public posts throughout the city.

Police would not be able to see private footage without making a request that cites a relevant case number and a specific time range and area. Ring would then ask users in that area if they are willing to share footage with law enforcement.

“If we have a crime in a neighborhood, it allows us to see who has Ring cameras in that area,” Clifton said. “It also allows us to reach out to them via the app and ask if they have any video footage that would help us solve the crime … we’d no longer have to go door to door and ask them.”

Police could only see the footage if the user explicitly and voluntarily chose to share it with them. Users could also opt out of all future requests by law enforcement.

“Flock is a little bit different than Ring,” Clifton said. “With Ring, it’s owned 100 percent by the person who has the video, so we can’t get it from them unless they give us permission.”

The council agreed to put the agree-

ment with Ring on the consent agenda.

However, there was some debate over the Flock agreement.

Across the city, 17 Flock license plate cameras have been installed by six subdivisions — Ellington, Mabry Park, Medlock Bridge, Prestwick, the Reserve at Autry Mill and the Ridge at Brumbelow. The neighborhoods own the photos captured by these cameras.

“This is done by [homeowner associations] … based on being elected representatives from the neighborhoods,” Clifton said. “There were some questions earlier if 100 percent of the residents in that neighborhood gave permission to put those cameras up, I doubt very seriously that 100 percent of them even know that they’re there.”

With an official agreement, the police would be able to access the images stored by the neighborhood. Permission would be granted by the HOA board, president or designated security lead, Clifton said.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Organized by the Johns Creek Rotary, there was a memorial event the morning of Sept. 11 to recognize the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.

As in past years, the event was held at Newtown Park’s Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater and attended by local elected officials.

A 9-11 survivor, Beth Zampieri, spoke at the event. Zampieri was just arriving at work at the World Trade Center on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 when the attack began. She now lives in Johns Creek with her family.

“In New York City, the 9-11 anniversaries are never business as usual,” Zampieri said. “Everybody is just one degree of separation from the immediate event. The emotions are very, very raw, so the anniversaries have been really hard for me down here in Atlanta.”

Zampieri explained how she has begun a tradition of delivering homemade cookies and cards to firefighter on the anniversary of the attacks to thank the first responders for their service, a tradi-

tion she encouraged others to adopt.

“Some people tell me I was saved on 9-11 for a reason,” she said. “I know their comment is well intentioned, but I really have a hard time with that statement. I strongly believe I am no different from the hundreds and thousands who were not able to escape … but while I don’t think I was saved for a reason, I do feel I have a responsibility.”

Of the 2,977 people killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, 343 were New York City firefighters, 60 were police officers with the Port Authority and New York City Police and eight were civilian paramedics.

Each year the memorial serves as a small fundraiser for the Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation, which was established to assist injured Johns Creek firefighters and police officers or to assist their families if they are killed in the line of duty.

“I am humbled and so appreciative for the crowd and donations given to help support the Public Safety Foundation as well as our other programs within The Rotary Club of Johns Creek North Fulton,” Rotary President Kelly Stephens said.

Task force makes 24 arrests on sex crime charges

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga.—Twenty-four people were arrested as a result of an undercover investigation coordinated by local authorities.

“Operation Just Cause” was a four-day operation directed by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office High Technology Crime unit that began Sept. 5 and resulted in the arrest of 23 men and 1 woman on sex crimes including computer or electronic pornography and human trafficking.

Two of the individuals were registered sex offenders.

According to the sheriff’s office, additional charges may be forthcoming.

“The goal of Operation Just Cause was to arrest persons who communicate with children online and then travel to meet them for the purpose of having sex,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said. “Additionally, the operation targeted those that are willing to exploit children by purchasing sex with a minor.”

Thirteen additional law enforcement agencies participated in “Operation Just Cause” as members of the Georgia ICAC Task Force. The agencies assisting in the operation included: Johns CreekAlpharetta-Forsyth County Drug Task Force, Alpharetta Police Department,

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Floyd County Police Department, GBI, GBI-Georgia Information Sharing and Analysis Center, Gwinnett County Police Department, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Johns Creek Police Department, Lilburn Police Department, Roswell Police Department and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Online child predators visit chat rooms and websites on the internet, find children, begin conversations with them, introduce sexual content and arrange a meeting with the children for the purpose of having sex.

Over the course of the operation, a number of cases were established that met the threshold for arrest, and 24 resulted in arrests.

Those arrested ranged in age from 19 to 65, traveled from areas around north Georgia and other states with the alleged intent to meet a child for sex, officials said.

One of the individuals that was arrested was in possession of suspected illegal drugs.

Thirty-one mobile phones were seized as evidence during the operation. One person identified in the operation was a current state prisoner in the Department of Corrections system using an illegally possessed phone smuggled inside the prison, according to the statement.

During the multi-day operation, investigators had numerous exchanges with subjects on various social media or internet platforms. In many of the interactions, the subject initiated contact with someone whom they believed to be a minor (but who was actually an undercover agent) and directed the conversation toward sex. In some of those cases, the subject introduced obscene or lewd content, often exposing the “minor” to pornography or requesting the child take nude or pornographic images for them.

Although some websites promote themselves as being for “adults-only” it is not uncommon for law enforcement to work cases in which children access these sites, establish profiles claiming to be older, and then find themselves vulnerable to victimization. Several subjects were identified as communicating simultaneously with multiple investigators posing as minors, according to the sheriff’s report.

Willstock music festival raises money, awareness to prevent teen suicide

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Will to Live foundation held its signature event, Willstock Music Festival, Sept. 7 at Northview High School.

The Will to Live Foundation was created by Johns Creek parents in 2010 after the suicide of their son, Will Trautwein. Will was 15 years old, a freshman and athlete at Northview High School.

Will’s friends and family turned their pain into action by creating the foundation, which provides training to teachers across the country to recognize signs of suicide. The group also supports counseling nonprofits and grants scholarships.

Because of Will’s love of music, a Woodstock-style festival seemed like the perfect way to honor Will’s legacy while raising money and awareness for teen mental health, Will’s father John Trautwein said.

“All of my son Will’s best friends got together, and the first thing they wanted to do was a version of Woodstock,” John said. “This was literally within a week or two of when Will died. So as you can imagine, it’s very near and dear to me, but it’s also very near and dear to his friends.”

The festival included bands with students from Northview, Johns Creek High School, Alpharetta High and Cambridge.

Along with an annual 5K, the music festival is the biggest fundraiser for the Will to Live Foundation. Before music even began, the group had raised more than $30,000 for mental health education and community programs.

“It’s money raised by kids, during fun events where they deliver hope to each other, and then it goes to educate the parents, teachers, coaches and trusted adults in their lives,” John said.

Rivers Alive Cleanup set for Sept. 28

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Chattahoochee River is one of Roswell’s beloved assets, and soon, local volunteers will spend an afternoon tending to its health and cleanliness.

On Sept. 28, Keep Roswell Beautiful will host its annual Rivers Alive Cleanup. The tradition was started statewide by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources back in 1993 to clean litter in and around Georgia’s rivers.

Roswell’s event will focus specifically on the roads and trails surrounding the downtown Roswell area as well as removing litter in the Chattahoochee River.

In addition to litter cleanup, volunteers will be removing the invasive privet shrub from Riverside Park.

“We aim to create awareness of our local water resources and instill a sense of community pride by coming together to

fishing. Clean water is a major component of human health as well as the health of the local flora and fauna.”

Storm water pollution, when rainwater washes pollutants into waterways, is especially prevalent in suburban cities like Roswell, Culbreth said.

She added that some of the most common pollutants include dog waste, which can cause bacteria spikes; fertilizers, which can cause algae blooms and decreased oxygen; pesticides, which can harm aquatic animals; and litter, which can harm wildlife and is often an eyesore.

Cleanup, however, can help to reduce such damage.

Last year, more than 150 volunteers helped with cleanup efforts, and organizers are hoping to pull in even more this year.

This year’s cleanup starts at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Riverside Park, 575 Riverside Road, Roswell.

Volunteers can help with road cleanup, storm drain marking and privet pulling.

Those interested in waterway cleanup should bring their own watercraft.

People of all ages can volunteer in the road cleanup, but there are some age restrictions for other activities.

Although the Rivers Alive Cleanup is once a year, citizens can take small steps to help keep rivers clean yearround. Culbreth outlined some options.

“We should remember that anything we put on the ground will likely end up on the river at some point,” she said.

“We encourage people to apply only the minimum amount of fertilizers and pesticides in their yards and carefully read instructions before doing so. Picking up after your pets, even in your own yard, is crucial. Keep your vehicles in good repair, so they aren’t leaking motor oil or other chemicals. And perhaps the most obvious solution is don’t litter.”

People can sign up to volunteer for the 2019 Rivers Alive Cleanup and sign waivers online at roswellgov.com. The registration deadline is Sept. 20.

Community conversation focuses on suicide prevention

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Suicide is a difficult topic to discuss, but it is absolutely necessary to have the conversation. That was the emphasis of “Suicide: A Community Conversation” held at Milton City Hall on Sept. 10, where a panel of experts tackled the issue of suicide before a packed room of adults and teens. The event was put on by the city and Summit Counseling.

Though the popular belief still remains that discussing suicide can lead to people taking their lives, the panel stressed the importance of breaking that stigma.

“If Milton is to be the best place to call home, we have to be able to discuss difficult topics like suicide,” Mayor Joe Lockwood said. “Talking is the first step toward prevention.”

The same message was shared by Lauralyn Mustaki and Britt Beene, who both lost teens to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death for teens according to the CDC. Mustaki’s daughter, Ivey, took her own life in March 2018 at the age of 18. Beene’s son, Reagan, took his life in 2013 while a freshman at Cambridge High School.

Each parent shared their stories, and they highlighted the differences that can lead to a teen choosing to take their own life, whether it is due to a longstanding trauma or a reaction to a distressing occurrence.

While there is not a catch-all for suicide prevention, the panel did discuss signs that can serve as possible warning signals.

Megan Barfield, a therapist at Summit Counseling, said parents should be on the lookout for a disconnection by their son or daughter, or if their teen feels they are a burden on their family.

Teens should also be mindful of changes to their friend’s behavior.

“If you see a friend who is acting different, or maybe you are just worried about them or they said something that is worrying to you, acknowledge that you hear it and that you are there for them by caring for them, and then tell someone,” Barfield said.

Ron Magat of Summit Counseling said kids and teens do not have the same maturity that adults might place on them, and parents should not dismiss the stress or trauma they may be experiencing. It is also vital parents take seriously any language that suggest self-harm.

“What I see a lot in my office is parents coming in and saying [their kids] just want attention or they are saying that to give their cell phone back…that’s

Chelsea Montgomery, Fulton County Schools executive director of counseling, psychological and social work services, said schools take any such comments seriously. She added that teens can take advantage of the Text 4 Help program, which connects students with a licensed physician through text, and parents or friends can use an anonymous tip line if they have concerns about a student. The school system also has mental health partners trained in suicide prevention.

Fulton County Medical Examiner Jan Gorniak also spoke on the panel after recently completing a study on suicide myths. She said major myths include that most people who take their own lives do so by purposeful overdose. Most suicides, she said, involve a firearm. She also said that suicide is not exclusive to those with depression, or that suicide rates increase around the holidays. Kids can also take their own life, Gorniak said. She once had a case in which an 8-year old had died by suicide.

Beene also shared how people can help others who have been traumatized by suicide, even when it may feel difficult to do so.

“Don’t be strong for me, cry,” Beene said. “I can’t tell you the overwhelming peace it brought me to see all the people coming and crying for me. It was a true, honest, genuine thing. I felt they were trying to take some of my pain away from me.”

Sean Curry of Stonecreek Church said it is okay to acknowledge how heartbreaking suicide is, and people should “lean in” instead of pulling away from someone who has been impacted by suicide.

“I think we need to be people who can laugh with them, cry with them, hurt with them, hug them and be there for them,” he said.

Good intentions are not good deeds

By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor After Hiroshima, it was said: “The world now accepts the miracle of the chain reaction that creates an atomic explosion; but we still refuse to accept the Chadwick miracles of the human heart - and the chain reactions that are made possible by using that power.”

I believe this is still true. We greatly underestimate the power of GOOD. But nowhere is the evidence more undeniable than the 75-year legacy of Heifer International. How did it begin?

In 1938, at the end of the Spanish Civil War, a relief worker, Dan West, started his movement “Not a cup – but a cow!” His real success came from the understanding that hope is not a strategy, and people must unify to create abundance instead of competing for limited resources. Once individuals achieve success, they never choose the insecurity of the past. This creates a common language of change that permeates a region and stabilizes it.

In South Korea, for example, the Korean Ministry of Agriculture estimates that 50 percent of all poultry in South Korea today are descended from 70,000 hatchlings supplied by Heifer after the Korean War. In Cambodia, Heifer has spread to half of the country, partnering not just to provide livestock but guidance and encouragement through their “cornerstones.” This new doctrine empowers women greatly. The farm-to-market project has found that alcoholism, domestic violence and disability can no longer hold back the women there. Given a few seeds, a piglet or some business training, a powerhouse network of matriarchs is building a decidedly better future

for their families as well as creating a healthy local food system.

The majority of my own philanthropic efforts are intentionally domestic; intended to alter the opportunities of the less fortunate in America.

But, I believe that the most enduring way to influence peace in the world is by fostering true Independence here — and abroad. Heifer has a unique payit-forward “contract” that puts all local participants in the position of bringing their own neighbors out of poverty. If the local program is to raise say....chickens, the first hatchlings born to a member are given to a neighbor, then his first to a neighbor, and so on. This is done in a very public ceremony. All recipients then enter into training together which

fosters real friendships as well as the unanimous application of best veterinary practices. This new interdependence continues without any U.S. involvement stabilizing locations experiencing desperate circumstances that could otherwise grow into social chaos and the need for people to migrate to survive.

When the llama population in Peru was declining seriously due to overbreeding, Heifer helped introduce a new breeding stock able to thrive on indigenous vegetation. This practice completely revitalized herds to full vigor in less than 5 years. Without llamas, life in Peru is not sustainable for at least 40 percent of the population.

yields local funding for schools, homes, medical care and expanded sustainable feeding projects. What has quietly been accomplished in the 75 years Heifer has operated is nothing short of spectacular!

Starting with community groups of 25, the work now reaches into the many thousands.

My favorite example is of a Kenyan community where Heifer came in to help boost milk yields to the dairy farmers. This community ended up creating a co-op producing butter to sell to local markets and hotels. As a result of that success, education has really taken off, and the first medical doctor has risen from a community where 25 years ago no one could read.

Ranjana Shrestha, another project participant, has risen to become an officially elected member of the parliament in Nepal.

In 2002, Heifer celebrated the “passing on the gift” ceremony of their 3 millionth animal. When people anywhere are given an opportunity to learn and put that education into practice, transformation takes place. Small scale farmers can feed the world and build stronger communities in a way that is permanent. Heifer’s value-based leadership mentors and inspires to dramatically impact every area of life when they enter a region. My interest in their work has continued to grow through my life and has affected my understanding of what is truly possible in the future of our small planet.

Final papers signed to begin Eastside Community Center

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Residents on Alpharetta’s east side should soon begin seeing signs of an amenity they’ve waited years to enjoy.

The City Council signed an agreement with the Ed Isakson YMCA on Sept. 9 to form a partnership in construction of a $3.1 million community center. It will be the city’s first indoor activity center east of Ga. 400.

Plans call for converting the existing teen center into a community activity, wellness, summer camp, program and meeting space by adding a second floor to the facility. There are no plans to increase the height of the building but merely to install a second floor to the existing structure.

Overall, the project will add five community spaces to the existing building.

Construction is set to begin this month, and completion is scheduled for May 2020.

Under terms of the agreement, the city will provide $2.5 million in funding for the project. That funding was made available through a bond referendum passed by voters in 2016.

Earlier this year, the city amended its

agreement with the YMCA to establish a collaboration between that organization and the city’s director of Parks and Recreation to develop and schedule community activities at the facility.

Morgan Rodgers, director of Parks and Recreation for the city, said the city will use the five rooms to accommodate activities for those with special needs and for seniors. A seniors advisory committee will be formed to assist in selecting suitable activities, he said.

“The programming for these spaces will be based on mutual understanding of the community needs, and we’re going to work collaboratively with the YMCA to program that space,” Rodgers said.

“There will be no overlapping or competing programs.”

City Council members said they were pleased to see the project launched, but they want to ensure the city’s interests will be recognized when program scheduling is drawn up.

Councilman Donald Mitchell said the project spans two city councils, and he wants to guarantee that the community center will be used for the greater Alpharetta community.

“We’re spending $2.5 million,” he said. “I think it’s important that we have something in writing that assures us of future [use].”

Rodgers said the city’s revised agreement with the YMCA, adopted in January, spells out specifically how the collaboration will work for the Eastside Community Center. He said the document was drawn up in collaboration with the YMCA governing board and the Alpharetta Recreation Commission.

“It was a well-thought-through document,” Rodgers said.

In a related matter at the Sept.

9 meeting, the City Council unanimously approved a design plan for Mid Broadwell Park. The 4.1-acre park was added to the city’s park’s inventory recently as part of the $52 million bond passed by voters in 2016.

Plans call for a small parking lot, a restroom, small picnic area, kids nature play area, open space and trails. The woodland area that currently takes up a large portion of the park, will remain.

Household incomes show no growth in 2018 A recent article in the Wall Street Journal kind of shocked me when it stated that American incomes remained essentially flat in 2018.

The median household income was $63,179, according to the article. That’s up only 0.9 percent over the prior year.

It’s hard to swallow, because the unemployment rate has hovered at or below 4 percent, which economists figure is what they would consider full-pool. This means everyone who wants a job, has one. With unemployment so low, early last year economists were concerned with how our economy was going to grow. If there are no workers to add to your company, how can you produce more of your goods and services?

Historically, when this happens, necessity becomes the mother of invention, and we’ve had advances in technology that have made our companies and our workers more productive. One worker is more able to produce more goods or services. In the late 1800s, the idea of assembly lines and using machinery to build things propelled how many units a worker could produce in a given day or hour. In the very late 1900s, computers and software enabled workers to organize and be incredibly more efficient, and businesses more organized. In just the last 15 years, smart phones have made all of us way more productive in some ways (and unproductive in other ways — monitoring your Facebook probably isn’t helping your company).

The thing about smart phones is that you can essentially do everything that your computer can do from almost anywhere in the world. And for many, they

So when a new technology is invented and woven into the workforce, to increase production, companies tend to spend more on integrating that technology and less on increasing wages.

Last year, according to Carl Tannenbaum, chief economist for Northern Trust, employers were faced with the prospect of having few workers to pull from, so instead focused on integrating better, existing technologies and improving efficiencies within their organizations and industries.

From most accounts, employers are certainly working harder to attract employees away from other companies, and they’re spending more on making their work environment seem more attractive than their competitors.

Around Atlanta, companies are happy to pay higher rents to be in offices that are located in more walkable neighborhoods with restaurants and shops close by. They are spending more making their offices more entertaining and hospitable and fun. A commercial realtor told me that employers are finding that the millennial workforce seems to be more attracted to companies that have more compatible work environments than they are to companies that offer higher wages.

The conundrum in the housing market is that you have a situation where wage growth was relatively flat last year, but home values increased by over 5 percent. So while wages are staying the same, the cost of living is going up, and residents are having to put a larger percentage of their take-home earnings toward living expenses. This will mean less

money to go toward shopping, eating out, putting money toward savings, and more usage of credit cards and equity lines.

According to a Bloomberg report, U.S. credit card debt closed out 2018 at a record $870 billion.

Normally, if you believe in the free market always balancing itself out, you would expect to see fewer people going out and buying homes, which would slow the increase in home values. And eventually wage increases would outpace home values. But the issue here in Atlanta is that our economy is so hot, we are still creating over 60,000 jobs a year, and more than 80,000 people a year are moving here. So they’ll still be buying houses, if they can find any.

I have no idea where we are headed.

If I did, I’d be retired and traveling the world with my family and a very impressive entourage of happy helpers. The market will invent something to stave off this trend, or the problem will exacerbate and employers here will increase wages to get above the local trend, or nothing will be invented and employers will not do anything to increase wages and something else will happen. Either way, here we are.

An interview with Dr. Taylor

By Alyssa McNamara I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win and again this week after his 3rd consecutive Best of win to talk about his continued success. The following is a compilation of both interviews.

Last year’s interview took place while Dr. Taylor held his newborn son Broderick or “Bodi.” As we discussed his practice’s progress, he laughed at the “happy chaos” that is his home life. Even without a newborn in his arms, he is as I remember him – warm and likeable. I looked back at my notes from my last interview and my observations still apply: “After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown.

He is warm, instantly calming, respectful and shockingly intelligent. Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and surgical ability are well established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician.”

Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Atlanta yet again! You must be proud. It is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone several years in a row!

To what do you attribute to your success?

Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much!

You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade.

I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons.

Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me.

I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patientcentered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them. Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe that the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated

into improved processes within my own practice.

But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff! We have the same amazing staff that we did last year with one excellent addition. Given that, we are a small practice with only 8 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients. We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We have been open over two and half years now and are constantly trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence.

Is there something that you feel sets you apart?

Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care. And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule.

Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred to other specialists or simply not be handled, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and board-certified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with a lab that allows me to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques.

Could you please comment on your background and experience?

Dr. Taylor: I believe my experience is notable given my number of years in

practice. Surgeons gain experience and perfect their skills through research and practice. As a result of training at very busy institutions then working for some of the busiest practices in Florida, I have performed over ten thousand dermatologic procedures. I completed my fellowship 5 years ago. Having been a Mohs surgeon at the University of Florida and also working in private practice in Florida before moving to Atlanta to be closer to family, I was lucky enough to take care of a great many patients who had extremely large cancers and required extensive reconstruction. As you might imagine, Florida residents need considerable dermatologic care. I am honored to take care of people with genuine need and am lucky to have been prepared by

outstanding mentors who trained me.

Upon starting my own practice here in Alpharetta, I already had the volume of experience usually found with a Mohs surgeon who has been in practice much longer.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Dr. Taylor: I really just want to say thank you very much! Thank you to our staff: you are valued and wonderful and we wouldn’t be continuing to excel without each and every one of you! Also thank you so very much to all of our patients and our community! Your confidence and support is greatly appreciated and rewarding. I look forward to continuing to strive to provide patients with exceptional care.

Exquisite Living owner, Zaina Wuest, and her team, are honored to be voted Best Furniture/Home Décor in the 2019 Best of North Atlanta contest. In just a few short years, Zaina Wuest has transformed her side gig as an interior designer to a thriving furniture and home design business.

Exquisite Living opened its doors in 2016 with a store on Atlanta Highway.

The space has since more than doubled from 3,200 square feet to 8,200 square feet. In 2017, Wuest left her corporate job to run the store full time.

This year, Exquisite Living opened its second location in Alpharetta City Center, right across from City Hall. The stylish furniture and elegant décor are right at home among the boutiques of the downtown.

Wuest credits her company’s fast growth and success to its superior customer service and the bonds she forms with her clients.

“It’s about the relationship and not feeling like you’ve gone somewhere and somebody just tried to sell you something,” she said.

“It’s one of the things we do differently, which is the reason our design side has done tremendously,” Wuest said.

“Most furniture stores offer complementary design service, but that’s just a sales person going in there and seeing what inventory they can pull out of the store.”

The designers work with the sales team and the client to help the homeowners come up with a plan for their space.

“We discuss with the client what their priorities are, their budget,” Wuest said.

“We’re really big on respecting budget and timeline.”

When she set out to build Exquisite Living, Wuest studied the factors that usually prevent someone from hiring a professional designer. Many shoppers feel pressured by sales people who put artificial deadlines on the design process, she said.

Wuest then set out to eliminate those hang-ups from her business model.

“The client can take a look at [the plan] and say ‘Today I have budget for two rooms. Six months down the road when my husband gets his bonus, I can do upstairs,’ and so on and so forth,” She said. “I think that’s a big differentiator for us. No one feels pressured.”

The designs give homeowners confidence in how their rooms will turn out.

“Once they get the plan they feel comfortable because they can visualize what their home is going to look like and now the decision is up to them when they want to do it and how much they want to spend,” she said.

This strategy of putting service before sales has proven fruitful, with many clients returning to Exquisite Living for multiple rooms or even multiple houses.

Wuest said developing trust with the

homeowners is the most valuable currency for her.

With a new location in the heart of Alpharetta, Wuest is looking for new ways to have Exquisite Living be involved with the community. She is researching ways the business can help local philanthropic groups.

“I really want to decorate for those children that suffer from cancer and have just a few days left, where they can be in a room that they enjoy and the room that they always wanted,” she said.

Another way the company is getting involved in the community, Exquisite Living recently partnered with Appen Media Group to hold a room makeover sweepstakes. One lucky Herald newspaper reader won a $5,000 room redesign.

“Every business ought to do something like this, especially when you’re such a neighborhood kind of business,” Wuest said. “I’d like to continue finding opportunities like that to do more.”

Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants. There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market. For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene.

The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised.

Just a few examples: We squeeze orange juice every morn-

ing. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice.

We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all. Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance.

We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter.

The list goes on.

A stranger’s discourse on modern trucks 2019 Ford Ranger The man waiting for his new tires to be installed was in a talking mood.

Punctuated by the yelping of impact wrenches, he talked at length about what is wrong with the modern truck JOE PARKER market. You see, he Reporter said, the issue is that joe@appenmediagroup.com new trucks are way too big, technological and expensive.

But he knew how to address the problem.

All that was needed to get affordable, new trucks into the hands of his bluecollar brethren was a company — of his creation — to manufacture a basic rolling chassis and body. These would be sold directly from the factory, no dealerships whatsoever, he said proudly.

Buyers could then paint the body whatever color they wanted, spruce up the interior with whatever amenities and materials that tickled their fancy (my words), chose their own wheels and tires and make all the necessary connections.

In just a short while, you can have a brand-new truck, mostly of your own creation, that will get the job done without breaking the bank.

I still have no idea what spurred the man into talking about his idea, maybe it was the rubber fumes, but his sentiments do have merit. After all, trucks these days are big and full of tech. Of course, that makes new models expensive and beyond the means of the average working man.

However, I can see more than a few holes in his plan to address the issue.

So, while we wait for his kit truck company to get off the ground, those wanting a midsize truck will have to turn to the established market, which again includes the Ford Ranger, pronounced dead in 2011 but now back in the fray.

Mr. Tire Shop Man would likely not be happy with the price of the new Ranger. The SuperCrew (extended cab) in Lariat trim starts at over $38,000, and my tester had several options, including the Lariat technology, trailer tow, sport appearance and FX4 off-road packages, putting the grand total at nearly $44,000.

And that is the territory of the Ranger’s big brother. An F-150 Lariat SuperCrew starts at just a few hundred dollars more.

But of course, not all will want the added size of a half-ton. The Ranger is

easy to park in crowded lots, it never felt cumbersome while traveling along city thoroughfares and most people will be able to fit it in their garage, a sphincterclenching process in an F-150.

That is not to say the Ranger is miniscule. Whether a SuperCrew or SuperCab (short cab), the 2019 Ranger is seven inches longer, 14 inches wider and around four inches higher than the biggest 2011 model. Of course, in the 2002 Ranger XLT I once owned, you had to sit sideways on a pullout seat that was about as wide as a single buttock if you wanted to sit behind the front row. The 2019 model is far more accommodating in the rear, though calling it comfortable would be a stretch.

The backrests sit straight upright, and the cushions rise sharply to the front and sit low to the floorboard. Sitting in the rear made me feel like I was standing at attention from the waist up and in the fetal position south of my belt.

Comfort increases exponentially in the front where there is plenty of room to wiggle and the seats are cozy, but the ride is a bit jarring.

My tester came with aforementioned FX4 off-road package, so the all-terrain tires, tuned suspension and off-road shocks could be to blame. If so, you will be sacrificing road comfort for ability off the paved paths — my Ranger bounced around town and over even the most insignificant road imperfections.

Ford recently announced an FX2 package which adds some of the same amenities for two-wheel drive models.

would likely be huffing at my complaints over the rear seats and springy ride.

Trucks are meant for work, not comfort, he’d likely say.

For that, the Ranger does fit the bill for those who need to do some hauling but do not need the capability of a halfton truck. But don’t get the assumption it is a slouch. The Ranger’s bed can handle between 1,560-1,860 pounds with an extended cab providing 43-cubic feet of cargo space and the short cab offering nine more cubic feet. All models can tow up to 3,500 pounds but opting for the trailer tow package ($495) increases that figure to 7,500, which is actually more than some full-sized trucks depending on the engine under the hood.

On the topic of engines, there is only one option for the Ranger, but it is a gem.

The 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline four dishes out 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. The Ranger’s power plant is 30 horsepower in the negative compared to the Chevy Colorado’s 2.5-liter inline four, but it blasts the 152-horspower Nissan Frontier’s four-banger and is not far off from the ponies offered by the V6-powered Honda Ridgeline and Toyota Tacoma.

No matter the comparison, the EcoBoost is silky smooth while providing quick acceleration and plenty of grunt.

Around town it’s mostly quiet and buttery in its power delivery and is highly responsive to acceleration input.

The EcoBoost is paired with a 10-speed automatic that is generally unnoticeable but can stumble in stop-and-go driving.

Although it would likely be deemed superfluous to Tire Shop Man, the base

Ranger’s interior is pretty barebones.

You get the same 2.3-inch infotainment screen and “productivity” screen in the instrument cluster that came in my wife’s 2014 Fiesta, vinyl floor covering and a legally required backup camera.

Most buyers will want to opt for the mid-level XLT trim which adds a Wi-Fi hotspot, cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind spot monitoring, automatic high beams, a USB port, dual zone climate control and an 8-inch touchscreen.

Lariat trim adds a B&O sound system, adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, leather-trimmed seating and other features.

While the Ranger’s exterior is rather handsome, the interior look evokes a hearty “meh.”

Though some controls and buttons are small for those with sausage fingers, the layout is intuitive, and switching from two to four-wheel drive can be done on the fly with a turn of the consolemounted dial. The same knob controls Ford’s Terrain Management System that tunes the Ranger for driving on mud, sand, snow or other surfaces.

In its first year back, the revitalized Ranger can have a ride bouncier than a Baywatch babes’ chest, its backseat is best suited for contortionists and the price tag can balloon quickly to half-ton money in higher trim. But the Ranger also has a fantastic engine, good midsize capability, respectable MPG figures, and ample overall size without being a behemoth.

But it is nowhere as memorable as Tire Shop Man’s tirade.

Johns Creek resident headlines boxing title bout ATLANTA, Ga. — Johns Creek resident Carlos Monroe will headline a World Boxing Association Boxing title bout on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Atlanta.

Buckhead Theatre will host the WBA Continental Americas Middleweight Boxing title bout with Monroe facing Javier Maciel in the headline fight.

Eric Moon will fight Mike Guy for the American Boxing Federation (ABF) title, followed by six other bouts.

The event is a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. Youths from several local Boys & Girls Clubs will attend.

Johns Creek girls lacrosse under new leadership Logan Faust promoted to lead varsity program

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek girls lacrosse will be under new direction for the 2020 season with the program tapping former JV head coach Logan Faust to lead the Gladiators varsity squad.

Faust said she was honored to be named head coach, and leading the 2019 JV team will be beneficial for her new role.

“I know a lot of these girls from teaching at the school and working with the JV program, and I think that has helped me to see where we can get our programs to work together,” she said.

Scott Vane, a community coach and president of the high school lacrosse board, said Faust is a boon to the program.

“Seeing how coach Faust interacted and engaged with the ladies this past year was a big part of the school’s decision and fit in the direction the school wanted the program to go,” Vane said. “I think there is a lot of good momentum.”

Faust takes over a team that is poised for a successful year. The Gladiators lost just four players from last

“We have a great foundation and the girls are excited. We have talked a lot about redemption and fighting in this upcoming season. I know we can make it to state and make a run for a state championship.”

Johns Creek was filled with youth last season with just two seniors on the squad, but their success was driven by growth of the Jr. Gladiator program, which has laid the groundwork for the Gladiators varsity to continue their success in the years ahead. The Jr. Gladiator program will see the return of Vane, Mike Hendrickson and John McIlwain as community coaches this season.

“I coached 11 of the 12 returning seniors in the 5th grade,” McIlwain said. “That continuity from the junior to high school program is what has us so excited. There is a lot of positive excitement among the girls and families about where we are going.”

With their junior program and a new face at the helm of the varsity program, Hendrickson said Johns Creek is solidifying itself as a standout program.

“I think we are in and among the top programs in the state,” Hendrickson said.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. —The Fulton County Department of Public Works will hold a series of public hearings related to rate changes to help fund its revised Capital Improvement Program for 2020 through 2026.

In 2017, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved an initial three-year funding plan needed to construct the immediate projects in the 2016 to 2025 Capital Improvement Program.

Based on the recent financial analysis, in order to complete the revised plan, Fulton County must provide additional funding for the capital improvement projects.

Over the past three years, Fulton County Public Works staff has begun implementing projects in the CIP. These projects include the Camp Creek Clarifier Upgrade, the Big Creek-Cobb County Diversion project, and construction of the Little River expansion facility.

Additionally, the design of the Big Creek facility has progressed and staff is estimating a total construction budget of approximately $300 million will be needed for the expansion.

Based on the work undertaken over the past three years and the need to address the inflow and infiltration into the sewer system under the Spill Mitigation Program, Public Works has updated the CIP to include the $40 PuzzleJunction.com million in funds for the Spill Mitigation Program and $300 million for the Big Creek expansion.

The revised CIP was then reevaluated for total revenue needs in the spring and summer of 2019.

The Public Works Department will hold public meetings from 5 to 8 p.m. to hear input from the community about the revised Capital Improvement Plan and proposed rate changes: Monday, September 23, 2019; Fulton County South Service Center, Stonewall Tell Road, College Park, Georgia 30349 Tuesday, September 24, 2019; Fulton County North Service Center, 7741 Roswell Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30350 If approved by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, the new rate structure would go into effect beginning on January 1, 2020.

A new place to hike A friend of ours called me this week and asked, “When are you going to report on that fossil collecting trip? I want to know how it turned out!”

Well, I’m going to put off the fossil update for one more week because I want to tell you about one of the joys of rambling around in the Georgia outdoors — specifically, the fun of finding a place that (to me at least) is new.

If you’ve lived in an area very long, new places get hard to find. But I found one the other day. It’s Birmingham Park in Milton, and it awaits you at the end of the little road that runs between Fire Station No. 43 and the Birmingham Baptist Church. Put 750 Hickory Flat Road into your GPS, and you’ll be on your way.

How did I come to find it? Well, my friend Alan is the new pastor at the Birmingham Baptist. I went to hear him preach on his very first day. I’ve got to say it sure was a friendly church, and Alan did some serious preaching too.

Anyway, as I neared the church before the service that Sunday morning, I noticed a sign for a park. A new park?

New to me anyway! There wasn’t time to check it out just then, but I had a free

afternoon coming up.

I’d explore it then.

Fast-forward a few days, and there I was driving the last few dozen yards to the park. On my left was the fire station; on my right was the church. It ocSTEVE HUDSON curred me that I was Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net surrounded by fire insurance.

The road ended at a wide spot with room for several cars, and there I was.

Birmingham Park’s main feature is its trail system. These trails are open to hikers and horseback riders. There’s an informational sign with a map of the park’s surprisingly extensive trail system, and I’d suggest taking a photo of the map with your cell phone to help you keep track of where you are as you explore.

There are two ways to access the trails. One is to start on the old woods road near the big sign, following it downhill and around a sweeping curve, past an old structure and a big field and then into the heart of things. Several trails connect with the woods road, opening

the door to a wide range of hiking possibilities.

What about the second way access?

It’s near the back left corner of the parking area. But don’t be fooled by that inviting opening through the fence, despite the fact that it seems to call out, “Come this way!” All you’ll find beyond it is a number of indistinct paths that meander around and eventually disappear. I’m betting they’re the legacy of hikers who, like me, figured that the fence opening was the place to start — but then, like me, soon realized that this was not the case.

As it turns out, the real second access point is just a few yards farther left

of the fence opening. There, you’ll spot a clearly blazed trail leading off down the hill. It’s remarkably obvious once you see it (and shady and scenic once you start hiking). It’s become my preferred way to access these trails.

The trails themselves represent a delightful mix of upland and lowland and level and strenuous. Near the back of the park where the trail passes close to the upper reaches of Little River, there are place where the trail is narrow and overgrown. But it’s never hard to follow.

As you might guess, I was particularly interested in the section of trail which paralleled the water. For the most part, the creek flows at the bottom of steep banks. But there are places where spur trails have formed leading from the waterside trail down to the stream.

One of those spurs leads to a spot that’s nigh onto perfect if you happen to be a golden retriever — an ideal spot to plop down in the water and cool off after an hour spent hiking with their people.

“It’s really a nice spot for us dogs,” said Flossie the Golden Retriever when I met her and her People on the trail. You didn’t know I spoke Dogese, did you?

Well, I do. Be impressed! It is not an easy language to learn, but Ellie my resident Mini Schnauzer has been working on it with me. After all, you can’t know too many languages. I have potential, she says, and so I practice whenever I meet a dog like Flossie who will take the time to chat.

“How’s the water?” I ask Flossie.

She wags her tail and replies, “Not bad.” Apparently so! She’s sprawled in the creek, front and rear legs extended in the cool, clear flow. The water is only about two inches deep.

“But that’s plenty when you’re a dog,” Flossie adds. “I just wish my people would unhook this leash so I could show you how a creek should really be appreciated. But of course they won’t do that. They’re responsible folks, and the rules say I’ve got to be on a leash.”

I love a reasonable dog.

Though thus far these cameras have only been installed on publicly owned roads where there is no legal expectation of privacy, some council members expressed fears that this technology veers too close for comfort toward a surveillance state.

“It’s almost like stepping outside your house means you have no expec-

NEWS tation of privacy,” Councilman John Bradberry said. “That may be the world we live in, but I don’t think we have to further enable that.”

Clifton said Flock has a resident safelist feature. If a resident adds their tag to the safelist, photos of their vehicle will not be released to the police. Councilwoman Stephanie Endres asked city staff to reach out to the HOAs to ensure everything was being done to make residents aware of the cameras and the safelist feature.

“Residents may not know even that they have the cameras,” Endres said.

“The Ring was pretty clear; you went directly to the homeowner. With this one, I understand the greater good, but the whole point of individual rights is to protect the individual from the mob.”

During public comment that night, four residents spoke in favor of the MOU with Flock. Another speaker urged the council to do more research into data privacy law and set clear rules for how long the data would be stored and what agencies it could be shared with.

Convergent is expected to present its feasibility report around Thanksgiving, and the task force hopes to begin fundraising this winter.

The project now has a website to share progress, at jclegacy.org.

The proposed facility is estimated to cost $50-$55 million, and would feature a 700-800 seat performance venue, rehearsal rooms, office space, a banquet hall and a grand foyer.

It also would include 18,000 square feet for the Johns Creek Arts

Center, double its current space.

The total square footage would be around 83,000, according to Wayne Baughman, chair of the Johns Creek Cultural Arts Center Task Force and director of the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra.

“What was an uphill climb a couple years ago is close to the peak and hopefully soon it will be downhill,” Baughman said. “Thus far it’s been a wonderful convergence of ideas and support, financial and otherwise.”

The September meeting, held at Cambridge Academy of Music, also included a 30-minute musical showcase led by Piotr Folkert of Musik21 and featuring some of his studio’s advanced students.

The Arts Alliance meetings are free and open to the public. While they were started to create networking opportunities for arts leaders, anyone interested in promoting the arts in the community is encouraged to join.
