By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a Cumming man Aug. 18 clocked traveling at 163 mph on southbound Ga. 400.

“When I saw that, I had to go and reread the report to make sure it wasn’t a typo,” said police spokesman Sgt. Howard Miller. “He was traveling that fast.”

Shortly after midnight that night, an officer patrolling Ga. 400 southbound near Old Milton Parkway saw a motorcycle speed past at a high rate of speed.

Radar clocked the driver at 163 mph in a 65-mph zone.

The first officer who spotted the motorcyclist was unable to pursue out of safety concerns, Miller said.

“The officer did activate his lights, but the motorcyclist was so far ahead, we couldn’t have pursued it even if we wanted to,” he added. “Motorcycles are a lot lighter, a lot faster, than a car.

Thousands in jewelry taken during residential burglary JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating an Aug. 16 house burglary at Highgate Manor Court.

A daughter said that her mother left that evening at 7 p.m., and the daughter arrived close to 10 p.m.

When she entered the house, the daughter saw that the rear porch door’s glass had been shattered. She called police and walked through the house with police and her family. They noted several items missing.

The missing items include $10,000 worth of jewelry.

The officer called in the incident and turned onto the Holcomb Bridge Road exit. There, at the stoplight, the officer spotted the motorcyclist waiting at a red light behind an SUV. The officer once again activated his lights.

This time, the motorcyclist complied and pulled over.

According to the police report, the motorcyclist said he was “just out for a ride” and didn’t realize he had been going so fast. The motorcyclist added that the bike was quick and he “just barely squeezed the throttle.”

The motorcyclist, later identified as 30-year-old Alex Olson of Cumming, was arrested without incident and charged with speeding and reckless driving.

This isn’t the only recent speeding incident where the driver surpasses 100 mph.

Two teens arrested for forced robbery JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested two teenagers, both 18, for robbery by force, aggravated assault and battery.

A witness reported the incident to police Aug. 17 while she watched from her apartment deck on Medlock Bridge Road.

She said she saw the two attack another teenager and steal his phone. The victim walked off toward Abbots Bridge Road.

Police found the two suspects at a nearby Subway. One of the suspects said they wanted to buy marijuana off of the victim, but the victim tried to sell them low-grade product. The suspect said that a fight ensued until they heard the witness yell out that she was calling police, and all three teenagers fled.

Later that night, the victim’s mother contacted police saying that her son had been robbed.

That same night, police arrested another driver, 36-year-old Daniel North of Woodstock, for going 112 mph on Ga. 400. And on Aug. 21, police arrested another driver on Westside Parkway, where the speed zone is 40 mph, for traveling at 110 mph. The name of the third driver was not available at publication time.

Thankfully, Miller said, the drivers were all arrested before they could hurt themselves or anyone else.

He added that speed limits aren’t just signs. They’re put there for everyone’s safety, both the drivers and others around them.

“At those high speeds, making a simple mistake, an improper lane change — they’re not going to be able to stop or make the necessary adjustments quick enough before there’s a car crash,” Miller said. “And at those speeds, if something happens, it’s probably going to be pretty tragic.” contacted him on Snapchat to meet up and buy marijuana. Johns Creek officials ask GDOT to maintain lane widths on Medlock

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — After an hour of contentious discussion, the Johns Creek City Council unanimously approved a resolution that asks the state to maintain 12-foot lane widths along Medlock Bridge Road.

The resolution counters a request made earlier this year by the Johns Creek Public Works Department asking that the Georgia Department of Transportation reduce lane widths from 12 feet to 11 feet along the road, also known as Ga. 141, as part of the state’s regular repaving.

The City Council was not made aware of the reconfiguration request until a July 22 meeting, the week resurfacing work was set to begin.

In that meeting and the following Aug. 5 council session, the entire City Council expressed frustration that they had not been notified about the request sooner or approved it to begin with.

However, at that time, Mayor Mike Bodker said he could be upset with the process and still agree with the outcome and urged the council to consider 11foot lanes on their own merits.

The Public Works Department had proposed that a wider shoulder would create a number of safety benefits: more space to maneuver if drivers need to avoid an accident, a place to pull over if their car breaks down and more space for emergency vehicles to navigate traffic.

planned to request that GDOT lower the speed limit from 55 to 45 mph along the road, which could further improve safety, but would be unlikely to be approved without some change to the road.

Councilman John Bradberry opposed 11-foot lanes from the beginning, and by the end of Monday night, the other council members had all signed onto a modified version of a resolution asking GDOT

to repave the road with 12-foot lanes.

A notable crowd turned up Aug. 19 in opposition to the lane-width reduction, and Councilman Lenny Zaprowski said he received around 60 emails on the subject. A dozen Johns Creek residents spoke against 11-foot lanes during public comment.

“The residents of Johns Creek should not have to worry about having the last two miles home be the most stressful of their commute,” said resident Ernest Moosa. “No one has talked about why the 11-foot lanes are safer than the 12-foot lanes. It’s because it creates a great level of anxiety and you as a driver now have to pay even more attention to everything going on.”

Several speakers expressed fear that the lane-width reduction would be a “backdoor” or “Trojan horse” for widening Medlock to six lanes — a notion promoted by Bradberry.

“I have been fatigued that it seems like we are constantly playing a game of defense,” Bradberry said. “Why can we not move forward as a community to do some of the things that other communities are doing that would truly add value to our quality of life? Instead, we’re on the defense and we’re just trying to hold the line against things that are not in our best interest.”

The City Council has taken the position that it will not consider adding a lane to Medlock Bridge until it settles on a long-term solution for the intersection with State Bridge Road and coordinated plans with Forsyth and Gwinnett Counties.

Some council members have suggested they would oppose adding a lane on Medlock even if those other factors were addressed. The council has mostly tried to ignore the elephant in the room: that widening Medlock Bridge to six lanes is a Tier 1 TSPLOST project voted on and approved by residents.

Voters, though by a narrow margin, approved the project as part of the transportation sales tax referendum in 2016. According to the city attorney and a courtesy review by the Georgia Attorney General’s Office, the city is legally required to complete the projects funded

by TSPLOST unless they are determined to meet the legal definition of “infeasible.”

At the Aug. 19 meeting, Bradberry presented a document dated April 10 that suggests Public Works personnel may have had that widening project on their minds when they proposed the lane-width reduction.

The memo, which Public Works Director Lynette Baker identified as a draft of the request that the city later filed with GDOT, reads: “The narrowed lanes would allow for development of a future travel lane in each direction with minimal impacts to property or utilities.”

This language was not included in the final request submitted to GDOT in May, Baker said.

“We’re not trying to get away with anything,” Baker said. “That’s the bottom-line tonight. There is nothing that we’re trying

Local attorney announces bid for State Senate District 48

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DULUTH, Ga. — Republican Matt Reeves has announced he intends to run for State Senate District 48 in 2020.

Reeves was the 2018 Republican candidate for the seat, which represents parts of Duluth, Johns Creek, Suwanee, Peachtree Corners and Berkeley Lake.

He lost to Democrat Zahra Karinshak 53.6 percent to 46.4 percent.

Reeves is a partner at Andersen, Tate & Carr, has served as a Rotary Club president and has been active in leadership in many local civic, nonprofit and business groups in the area for more than 16 years.

“First, I want to thank the over 30,000 citizens who voted for me last cycle, and I will continue to keep reaching out to voters who didn’t,” Reeves said.

keeping our community safe and fiscal conservatism, then I’m your candidate.”

He and his wife Suzette Reeves and their three school-age children live in Duluth and attend Perimeter Church.

Reeves graduated with REEVES honors from UGA School of Law and Mercer University.

“I care deeply about our families, homeowners, working people, and small businesses and will fight hard in the State Senate for our values and quality of life, working with our local elected officials,” Reeves said. “We are going to work hard to raise money and bring our message to all the voters in District 48 in 2020.”

Reeves could be running for an open seat. Karinshak announced earlier this month she intends to run for U.S. House District 7.

With a margin of around 400 votes, District 7, which represents parts of Gwinnett and Forsyth counties, was the closest U.S. House race in the country in 2018. Since Rep. Rob Woodall announced in February he would not seek re-election, competitive primaries are taking shape on both sides.

For Democrats, Karinshak, an Air Force veteran and former federal prosecutor, will face Carolyn Bourdeaux, the college professor who narrowly lost the seat in 2018; attorney Marqus Cole; former Fulton County Commission Chair John Eaves; activist and campaign organizer Nabilah Islam and state Rep. Brenda Lopez Romero.

On the Republican side, state Sen. Renee Unterman, activist Lisa Babbage, Air Force veteran Ben Bullock, businessman Mark Gonsalves, former Home Depot executive Lynn Homrich, educator Lerah Lee, physician Rich McCormick and former NFL player Joe Profit have announced they intend to run.

While the mayor and council members Steve Broadbent and Jay Lin indicated that they initially planned to support 11-foot lanes for safety and speed limit reduction, all joined Bradberry in light of the unearthed document.

“I was ready to support lane-width reduction with the end goal of speedreduction until some new information was presented,” Lin said. “I was very disappointed seeing this.”

Although combative exchanges among council members is nothing new, dissention and mistrust seemed to reach new heights at the meeting.

“Decorum in this room tonight has been abysmal,” Bodker said.

“Staff has been vilified,” Bodker continued. “We have sat here from this dais, and I think anyone with sound reasoning would say that staff was vilified. I don’t believe that our staff are villains. I believe our staff are trying to reflect to the best of their ability — there may be exceptions in history — to the best of their ability the will of this community and the will of council.”

City Council races take shape

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — All three Johns Creek City Council seats are up for election Nov. 5 will be contested.

Two sitting council members, Jay Lin and Steve Broadbent, have decided not run again, while Councilman Chris Coughlin will see reelection. In Johns Creek, all City Council members represent the city at-large.

Three nominees will compete for Post 2: Royce Reinecke, Brian Weaver and Dilip Tunki.

Reinecke is a retired engineer and a frequenter of City Council meetings. He previously ran in a special election for State House District 50 in 2015. Reinecke earned 5 percent of the vote in the race, which was eventually won by current Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in a runoff.

Weaver is another retiree. Tunki is a financial officer has served on the School Governance Council for Chattahoochee High School and the Johns Creek Construction Board of Appeals.

Three challengers will face Coughlin for Post 4. Coughlin is a research scientist elected to the council for an interim term in 2015 and again through a special election April 2017.

During his term he has focused on efforts to improve government efficiency, lower the city’s expenditures and taxes and reduce traffic congestion through ridesharing and walking initiatives.

Coughlin said in addition to the above goals, if reelected he would like to pursue a greenway along the Chattahoochee river from McGinnis Ferry to Abbotts Bridge and other parks projects.

Other Post 4 candidates are attorney and professor Kent Altom, wealth adviser Adam Thomas and financial analyst Marybeth Cooper, who has served as president of the Johns Creek Community Association.

Three candidates have thrown their hat into the ring for Post 6: attorney Erin Elwood, consultant Issure Yang and massage therapist Judy LeFave.

Yang previously ran for Post 1 in 2017 with a platform of addressing traffic and pausing high-density development. Yang lost to sitting Councilman Lenny Zaprowski 53.9 percent to 45.9 percent.

LeFave has served as president of the Johns Creek Community Association and was appointed to the Planning Commission in December 2017.

Qualifying closed Aug. 21. To qualify, a citizen must be at least 21 years old, have lived within Johns Creek for 12 months immediately preceding elections, and be registered and qualified to vote in Johns Creek municipal elections.

If elected, the council member must continue to live in Johns Creek for their four-year term. The candidate must also comply with the Georgia Election Code and the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission.

The deadline for Johns Creek residents to register to vote is Monday, Oct. 7. Voters can check their registration and locate their polling place at mvp.sos. ga.gov.

Early voting will be held Oct. 15 through Nov. 1, and early voting locations will be posted on the Fulton County elections website, fultoncountyga.gov/raehome. Absentee voters can view application information on the same website.

City council reduces property tax rate

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council unanimously set a property tax rate of 3.552 mills, or $3.55 for every $1,000 of assessed valued.

The rate is a reduction from last year’s 3.842 mills and lower than the rate that was advertised, 4.042.

Most residents should see their property taxes go down because the millage rate reduction comes at a time when 61 percent of properties saw their taxable value decrease, thanks to new homestead exemptions.

In Johns Creek, the city sets the millage rate toward the end of the fiscal year, so this tax rate is to fund the 2019 budget approved last fall.

As of June 30, revenues are trending $2.2 million over budget and expenditures are trending $1.8 million under budget, the city reports.

“Every year the City Council states it will reduce taxes if appropriate,” Councilwoman Stephanie Endres said. “Last year we said, ‘promises made, promises kept,’ and I think [that means] actually looking in the rearview mirror, looking at your millage rate, really looking at the cash collected taxes that came in.”

The council also set a rate of 0.391 mills for bond payment. This is also a reduction from the 2018 rate, which was 0.50 mills.

“I think it’s important that when it’s demonstrated we have the ability to return money to the taxpayers and still meet the commitments of the city, I think it’s important that we do that,” Councilman Johns Bradberry said.

Governor provides update on state, policies

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Georgia has much to be proud of from the past several months, according to Gov. Brian Kemp.

Speaking at the Aug. 23 Alpharetta Rotary Club Meeting at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, Kemp updated the capacity crowd on his latest legislative efforts and changes coming to Georgia.

“As you all know, on the campaign trail, I made a lot of promises,” Kemp said. “I talked about making Georgia No. 1 for small business, reforming state government, investing in education and keeping taxes low… Over and over again — not just myself, but also the people who have been serving with me down there in the Capitol — we have been keeping our promises.”

Kemp covered some of the highlights from the most recent legislative session ended in April and thanked legislators, both Democrats and Republicans, for working together to solve some of the state’s biggest issues.

Education was one of the top priorities. The state not only fully funded the

school district formula for the second year in the row, Kemp said, they have also passed a flat $3,000 pay raise for all certified teachers in the state to help with retention rates.

“We were losing 44 percent of our educators in the first five years that they got into the profession,” Kemp said. “It’s happening in urban areas. It’s happening in suburban areas. It’s happening in rural areas.”

Other changes Kemp discussed included funding for mental health services and school safety.

Kemp also spoke about disaster relief funding for Georgia’s rural areas and farmers after Hurricane Michael.

“Georgians have always stood with others in their time of need,” Kemp said.

This past legislative session, Kemp said he worked to cut wasteful spending and streamline operations.

“We must budget conservatively, save for a rainy day, and keep our taxes low,” Kemp said. “The time to do this is when we’re in a great economy instead of waiting for a disaster to make government more efficient. We should do this now, because it helps us fund our priorities

Rotary Club of Johns Creek welcomes Mexican diplomat

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Rotary Club of Johns Creek welcomed Javier Díaz de León, the Mexican Consul General in Atlanta, to discuss North American trade relations Aug. 21.

Díaz has served as a diplomat for 20 years, most of that time in the United States, where Mexico has 50 consulates.

The Mexican Consulate is the largest in Atlanta and oversees Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.

It helps about 300 people each day.

Díaz’s presentation emphasized the importance of U.S.-Mexico trade relations on both countries’ economies. Last year, total trade between the countries was around $600 billion, more than $1 million a day.

Most of that trade comes in the form of chemicals, electronics and manufacturing supplies, not the consumer products that hit the shelves.

“Yes, we like your peaches,” Díaz said. “Yes, you like our tequila, but it’s a lot more than that.”

In Georgia, the economic impact of trade with Mexico was estimated to be $10.8 billion in 2018, or about 300,000 jobs.

As with last year when Canadian Consul General Nadia Theodore visited the Rotary, renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement were the focus of the conversation.

“NAFTA completely transformed Mexico’s

economy,” Díaz said. “Before NAFTA, Mexico was one of the most closed-off countries in the world.”

Now, Mexico has negotiated free trade agreements with many other Latin American countries, the European Union, and is a member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, he said.

“If you’re thinking of a country, we probably have a free trade agreement with them, or we want to,” Díaz said.

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the NAFTA replacement, was signed by the countries’ leaders in November 2018 and is awaiting ratification by the U.S. Congress and Canadian Parliament.

Díaz has met with Reps. Lucy McBath, Rob Woodall and 10 other legislators from Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee to urge them to pass the agreement.

“We know when tensions shift, Mexico and Canada stay reliable trade partners,” Díaz said.

Díaz ended his presentation by talking about the human impact of U.S.-Mexico relations.

There are nearly half a million Mexicans living in Georgia, mostly in the Atlanta area, he said, and across the country 32 million American residents are Mexico-born or children of Mexicans.

“We’re not just sharing people; we’re sharing families,” Díaz said. “It’s too important to fall to rhetoric.”

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Aquatic Team, or JCATs, competed in the state swim meet in late July, winning medals in 14 individual events and seven relay events.

“Our swimmers, coaches and parents all had a great time, and our city was strongly represented,” Recreation Manager Kirk Franz said.

The 51 athletes who competed were recognized by the Johns PuzzleJunction.com Creek City Council on Aug. 19.

Autrey Mill to host Family Farm Festival Sept. 14

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Autrey Nature Preserve and Heritage Center is teaming up with Johns Creek to host the Family Farm Festival, a first-of-its-kind event for the city.

The goal of the festival is to showcase the land’s history and remind locals what Johns Creek was like when it was all farmland. Autrey Mill has invited descendants of families who lived in the area in the 1800s and 1900s to speak at the event.

“We will be celebrating the community of people who lived, worked and supported one another long ago, when this land was a farm and milling operation,” Autrey Mill Board President Pam Sutton said.

The free festival will be Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Educational activities will include storytelling, heritage crafts and old-fashioned games.

Attendees will also be able to get up close with Autrey Mill’s collection of farm animals — including goats, chickens, ducks and rabbits — and learn about their care and the roles they played on the farm.

There will be outdoor cooking demonstrations and tastings, and picnic lunches will be available for purchase.

The event was made possible thanks to sponsorship from the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“The JCCVB saw this event as an opportunity to partner with one of the city’s top attractions, Autrey Mill Nature Preserve, to develop a new tourism product that would highlight the rich history of our city,” CVB Executive Director Shelby Marzen said. “When traveling, visitors are attracted to authentic experiences that are unique to the area, and this festival is certainly something that can only be found in Johns Creek.”

The Johns Creek Historical Society is coordinating activities for the descendants of early farm families and others with ties to local history.

“There will be opportunities to socialize and reminisce among themselves and also to share their memories of rural life with festival attendees,” Historical Society President Joan Compton said.

All of Autrey Mill’s historical buildings will be open for tours.

Autrey Mill Nature Preserve/Special

Docents help take care of historic artifacts and offer tours to visitors.

Autrey Mill seeks volunteers JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center is looking for volunteer docents for the 2019-2020 season.

Docent will learn about local Johns Creek history with a special focus on agrarian life from the mid-1800s, represented by the historic village and artifacts the heritage collection.

Docents will engage with museum visitors, fielding their questions and sharing knowledge to enrich the guest experience. Training is carried out through a series of lectures, suggested readings and walking tours.

Autrey Mill will hold an informational seminar for prospective volunteers Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. Autrey Mill’s Heritage Curator will introduce volunteers to the center’s preservation efforts, collection highlights and the heritage village.

Current docents will be on hand to share their experiences. All adults with enthusiasm for Autrey Mill and who love learning about history are welcome to apply to become a docent.

Fulton Commissioners approve pilot program for juveniles at risk FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County Board of commissioners voted unanimously Aug. 21 to approve funding for Project Level Up, an intervention program that works to reduce arrests and violence involving juvenile offenders.

The $120,000 pilot will be administered by the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office and the Atlanta Judicial Circuit. Public Defender’s Office. It seeks to reduce arrests and violence involving juvenile offenders by intervening in the lives of these young people.

“Our hope is that a program like this one can help address both the crime that plagues so many of our communities and the need for viable opportunities for our young people as an alternative to the streets,” Commission Chair Robb Pitts said. “Our hope is that this will yield tangible results in each of these areas.”

Through Level Up, juvenile offenders with three or more arrests are assigned a case worker and provided with services to help them stay away from a life of crime. If they graduate from Level Up, the charges still pending against them would be dismissed.

The funding approved will pay for the salaries of four staffers through the end of 2019 as program is developed and planned.

“I am pleased that the District Attorney’s Project Level Up Juvenile Recidivism Intervention Program was approved unanimously today with my colleagues voting in favor of releasing the funding that I set aside for this program,” Commissioner Natalie Hall said. “Project Level Up is a program that will be used to combat the juvenile crime epidemic in Fulton County. I am excited to see this program begin to help support the lives of our young people and their families.”

The Fulton County Division of Youth and Community Services and the Public Defender’s Office are among the agencies that would support family intervention efforts, and several area religious groups have pledged support for mentoring efforts for the at-risk young people targeted by the program.

Among the organizations that have pledged to assist in aftercare efforts are the Atlanta Police Foundation, the AtPromise Center, the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club.

LGBTQ support group holds panel on substance abuse

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — PFLAG Johns Creek held a panel to talk about substance abuse and addiction in the LGBTQ community Aug. 20 at Johns Creek United Methodist Church.

PFLAG, or Parent, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, is an organization for LGBTQ people and their families whose mission is to support, educate and advocate.

To fulfill the second component of that mission, PFLAG Johns Creek periodically hosts speakers and other educational events to talk about challenges facing LGBTQ people and their families.

Over the past year, PFLAG Johns Creek has hosted a civil rights attorney to talk about ongoing lawsuits impacting transgender rights and a psychologist to discuss transgender mental health.

Last week, the support group hosted a panel that included parents of LGBTQ individuals who struggled with substance abuse, a transgender man recovering from alcoholism and an addiction therapist.

The event gave parents of LGBTQ teens and parents an opportunity to ask questions about substance abuse and recovery.

Though addiction can affect anybody regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, LGBTQ people face higher rates of substance abuse and other behavioral health issues, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

“With any marginalized community, you don’t always feel seen,” said Christine Wolff, a therapist with Founda-

tions Recovery Network. “You don’t feel understood.”

Still, Wolff said, anyone can struggle with addiction, and it can take many forms.

“We’re all addicted,” Wolff said. “We’re all addicted to feeling good … Nothing feels as good as substances, so we’re all at risk. We all have to be careful.”

Wolff said over her seven years as an addiction therapist, she has seen substance abuse be a blessing in disguise for some people. As disruptive as it is, it’s a big enough red flag that it can force people into recovery, she said.

Through recovery, people learn to be authentic, to be more in touch with their emotions and to be more open to connection with others.

“The antidote to addiction is connection,” Wolff said.

“Addiction thrives in darkness and silence and loneliness.”

PFLAG Johns Creek President Ann Miller said she hopes the event encouraged parents to trust their gut if they sense their child is struggling, taught them to take drug use seriously — even drugs that are considered less dangerous like marijuana — and made them aware of the resources that are there to help.

In addition to educational events, PFLAG Johns Creek holds support meetings for tweens, teens and adults the third Tuesday of every month at Johns Creek United Methodist Church, 11180 Medlock Bridge Road.

The first Tuesday of every month, support meetings for teens and adults are held at Congregation B’nai Torah, 700 Mt. Vernon Highway in Sandy Springs. All events are free.

The Johns Creek group is the only PFLAG chapter in North Fulton and serves families around north Atlanta and beyond. More information about the group can be found at pflagjohnscreek.org.

It’s only a short hike to Darnell Creek Falls Okay, it’s confession time. I confess that sometimes I get cravings.

Just the other day, for instance, I found myself Craving #1, the overwhelming desire for some old-fashioned root STEVE HUDSON beer — you know, the Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net kind made with (dare I say it) real sugar.

At other times I experience Craving #2, in which I long intensely for a good cheeseburger. You know, the kind you used to get at a small-town diner.

Greasy? You bet. That’s where the flavor is.

Unfortunately, there’s a footnote here. To wit: The unavoidable consequence of too much of Cravings #1 and #2 is a few more pounds around the middle.

Shucks. How can I deal with those pounds? Hmmm. And aha! How about I get outside and hike to a waterfall?

Maybe…Rabun County’s Darnell Creek Falls!

Darnell Creek Falls is located near the town of Dillard, Ga., in extreme northeastern Georgia. With a height of about 30 feet, it’s not a giant as north Georgia waterfalls go. But it’s scenic, and the walk to it is a short one (a plus on hot days, even in the mountains).

And it’s easy to get to. In fact, you can drive almost all the way to it, basking in your vehicle’s air conditioning until the very last minute. Who could ask for more?

To get to Darnell Creek Falls, head north on U.S. 441 from Clayton toward Rabun Gap. Not quite 6 miles north of Clayton, look for the Rabun Gap Post Office on your right. Turn right onto Kelly’s Creek Road, go about a mile, and then turn right again onto Darnell Creek Road.

You’ll soon come to a very confusing fork in the road which offers three choices of which way to go. The two prongs on the right are private; take the left fork, which goes down a hill and soon crosses a creek. Just across the creek the road turns right, and you’ll be on Forest Service Road 150 as it takes off into the hills.

Continue about a quarter mile to a fork where the main road goes left and uphill while a rugged spur goes right and downhill. That spur takes you to Darnell Creek Falls.

Before going farther, I’ve got to tell

you that the spur can be rough. It’s narrow and can be rutted and muddy with little or no turnaround room. Thus, because the spur is potentially so unforgiving, many waterfall watchers park on the relative safety of FS-150 and then hike down the spur to the falls. It’s not far, and the walk will help you work off that soda and cheeseburger. All things considered, that’s not a bad plan.

As you follow the spur, it won’t be long until you catch your first glimpse of the falls. Then, in just a moment, you’ll come to a wide spot where the spur ends. The waterfall, at that point, is plainly visible and audible too.

And now I’m going to climb up on my soapbox — but not to get a better view of the falls.

There, in that wide spot, as in countless other wide spots near countless other scenic spots throughout almost any national forests, you may find urban detritus (that is, trash) laying around.

Plastic bottles…empty juice boxes… crumpled aluminum foil…and on and on. Somebody brought that stuff in. Why couldn’t they carry it out? Sometimes I’ve found this area in near-pristine condition. But other times, before leaving, I’ve filled up a big plastic bag with other people’s trash. Why folks leave their trash behind is beyond me, but they do.

I just don’t get it.

But enough of that. Let’s get back to the waterfall.

Where’s the best place to see Darnell Creek Falls? There are a number of good vantage points, though the favorite of many is from the creek itself a few dozen yards downstream. The amount of leaf cover may have as much to do with finding the best view as anything, but that’s the case on almost any waterfall adventure.

No matter which vantage point you choose, however, remember that exploring waterfalls can be a risky endeavor.

The same splashing water and angled rocks that make a waterfall so nice to look at also make for potentially hazardous conditions. And (to belabor the point just a little) it goes without saying that you should NEVER try to climb a waterfall. Not ever. Not even once. Every year, folks ignore that advice and are hurt or killed in waterfall-related falls. Be careful when exploring waterfalls — this one or any other. Remember that you, and only you, are responsible for your safety.

After soaking up the sight and sound of Darnell Creek Falls, you may find that the waterfalls bug has bitten. Are there other falls to see in the same general

area? Indeed there are.

But those adventures will have to wait for later. Right now I’ve decided it’s time for a root beer.

Then, after the refreshment is done,

I’m off to see another falls. This one is farther back in the woods, and some hiking will be involved…and I know a great place for a cheeseburger on the way home…

Alpharetta business expo highlights service, innovation

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Hundreds of visitors wound their way past an array of some 80 exhibitors Aug. 23 for the seventh annual Alpharetta Business Association Expo held at the Atlanta Marriott Alpharetta Hotel.

The show was a lot more engaging this year, with many tables inducing passersby with food, games, free samples and other activities.

Andy Jordan, executive vice president and chief credit officer for Providence Bank, said he used to wander through the exhibits at the expo until the bug hit him.

This is his third year as an exhibitor.

“I was sold on the idea,” he said. “It’s a great place to meet people and develop new relationships.”

Jordan’s booth drew extra attention with a gizmo that featured a metal washer dangling on a string. Visitors swung the washer toward a mounted hook for a chance to win a Bluetooth speaker.

Another highlight at the expo was a LinkedIn workshop presented by “The LinkedIn Guy” Gregg Burkhalter, a recognized expert on personal branding and a former radio personality at stations throughout the Southeast.

Meanwhile, Beth Johnson, partner with Savory Gourmet, was walking the aisles with a tray of delectables from The Savory Gourmet, which just had its grand opening earlier this month on Canton Street in Alpharetta.

Their chef, she said, is from New York, so a lot of the customers who hail from that part of the country love dining on an authentic New York Reuben or pastrami sandwich, she said.

Just down the aisle, another handson item garnered steady interest.

Sebastian Flores’ OctoGifts featured a multi-colored array of small, decorated, upright candy dispensers.

“It’s a combination greeting card-candy dispenser,” said the Alpharetta 13-year-old.

“It’s something you would give to a friend or family member on a special occasion.”

Each dispenser is made of card stock with a window of acetate that displays the level of candy still in the container.

Flores’ mother, Melanie, is a former educator who received her degree in engineering from MIT. She said she left her career as a coach to STEM educators to concentrate on her two sons.

Her eldest son, T.J., is a junior at Denmark High School. Sebastian is a student at DeSana Middle School in Alpharetta.

Melanie said Sebastian has sold about 66 of the devices over the past few months, bringing in about $1,000.

“We are just so proud of him,” Melanie said. “He just has this amazing ability to see things in his head and unzip them to see what they’d look like.”

Sebastian was one of three presenters earlier in the day for the ABA’s Tech Showcase, which features three entrepreneurs pitching their products to a panel of tech start-up experts.

The showcase included TGen Tech, which provides proprietary medical device technology that augments cardiac tissues and grows with the patient.

Espy Data Science, another presenter, combines statistics, math, computer programming and IT to help dealers run their businesses more effectively.

Then, there was Sebastian, inspired

by LEGO and origami, presenting his pitch for his candy dispenser.

“I think we did well,” he said after the presentation. “I wasn’t nervous. It was natural.”

Airport City to transform South Metro Atlanta There are transitional development projects, and then there is Airport City in College Park.

The College Park City Council unanimously approved a new master plan for a 420-acre mixedGeoff smith use development that Assurance Financial, will include almost gsmith@lendtheway.com 5 million square feet of office space, six hotels and 758,000 square feet of retail space. It is a massive development that will be located just west of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It is, essentially, a mini-city estimated to cost around $700 million to target corporate headquarters in the entertainment, technology, medical, hospitality and training industries who want to be near the busy airport.

The property is just north of Camp Creek Parkway and west of I-85 and the airport. The largely undeveloped property is owned by the City of College Park, which sees this project as something that will transform that part of Atlanta.

“I think in the end they feel like this is the one shot for that side of town south of I-20,” said Bill de St. Aubin, CEO of the Sizemore Group which was chosen to create the master plan, in a recent article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. “This one parcel, owned by one entity, is next to the largest job creator in the region south of I-20.”

The project has been compared in scale and style with Avalon and downtown Decatur. It will be urban in nature with city blocks and retail along the

ground floors, all sprawled out along the College Park Municipal Golf Course.

In regard to business travelers, it should not be overlooked that it is located next to the airport. With most businesses being located in downtown Atlanta, then north of the city, it’s a big deal if you don’t have to fight normal Atlanta traffic to get to where you are traveling to. It’s also a big deal if you can walk from your hotel to the business you are visiting, and then have a nice place to walk in the evening and find dinner.

When the Porsche Experience Center, which serves as the carmaker’s North American headquarters, was built just north of the airport along I-75, many people took notice. Potential customers and other executives could fly in, drive around the track, and fly out. If you are a company with a large contingent of executives who travel frequently, with Atlanta traffic the way it is, being located that close to the airport is a huge timesaver. And today’s employers are looking for any edge they can get in recruiting young talent. Add to that the fact that now you will have six hotels where customers can walk out of and be in an upscale, urban environment, and it’s really a game-changer for Atlanta.

Airport City will include a 5K multiuse loop around the entire development, and will convert the city’s historic golf course to 18 holes. In addition to the office, retail and hotels, the development will include multifamily, townhomes and single-family homes.

While the development is transformative for College Park, it’s really transformative for the entire area south of Atlanta. The cities of Hapeville, College Park

and Palmetto are not really known for new upscale developments. Sixteen years ago, I remember working on a house with a friend of mine who was building in a neighborhood called Serenbe. It’s in a city called Chattahoochee Hills just west of Palmetto. When he told me he was building a $1.2 million-house there, I was sincerely baffled. The community was founded by restaurateur Steve Nygren and is a super-upscale town built around his very active farm. It was for me, literally in the middle of nowhere. It has a downtown area closely connected to a network of unique homes. It is an incredibly laid-back and relaxing community where people can go down and stay the night. At the time, with no real economy close by, I didn’t know who was going to be able to live there. But because it was close to the airport, it filled up with executives who lived and worked in other parts of the country, but who came to Atlanta enough to have a second home near the airport.

Now, with the introduction of Airport City, this kind of development south of Atlanta may not seem so out of place.

Please don’t get me wrong. Social media has delivered and will continue to deliver considerable value to small businesses. However, just because you are using social media doesn’t mean you’re getting any value from it.

There are many reasons why.

At the top of the list are your target customers. If your small business does business with other businesses, commonly known as B2B, you probably won’t get a lot of traction using social media sites like Facebook.

Conversely, if your target customers are consumers, then Facebook could be perfect.

Social media sites for small businesses are not all focused on attracting new customers. Some sites like LinkedIn, for example, can be used to identify and recruit new employees.

As such, evaluating the utilization of social media must be based on what you are trying to accomplish.

In the digital world that we now live in, everyone has jumped on the bandwagon of social media. In some cases, it’s been a game changer, and in others, it’s been a terrible waste of time. If social media is right for your business, then use it. If it’s not, then don’t!

Appen Media appoints Cook as Dunwoody Crier editor

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Appen Media Group, publishers of the Herald newspapers and the Dunwoody Crier, has named Carson Cook as editor for the Crier.

Cook joined Appen, publishers of the Alpharetta-Roswell Herald, Johns Creek Herald, Forsyth Herald, Milton Herald and Northside Woman, in 2018 as a staff writer. This May, she was promoted to editor of the Johns Creek Herald and the quarterly Answer Book guides.

Cook will report on Dunwoody City Council and community news, while continuing to cover Johns Creek and Fulton County government for Appen’s other publications.

“I am ready to immerse myself in the Dunwoody community and understand the issues that matter to residents,” Cook said. “I hope to continue what people have loved about the Crier for the past 42 years, while expanding and improving the news coverage people care about.”

Cook previously worked as a community news reporter with the Chattanooga Times Free Press and is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

“Carson has shown a talent for identifying and absorbing community issues,” said Managing Editor Patrick Fox. “I think Crier readers will come to rely on her to report on the things that matter in Dunwoody.”

Appen Media Group announced plans to take over operations of the Dunwoody Crier weekly newspaper from Publisher Dick Williams in April.

ATLANTA — After more than four years of negotiations and clearing regulatory hurdles, Northside Hospital and the Gwinnett Health System have completed arrangements to combine their health care operations. The merger takes effect Aug. 28.

The expanded Northside Hospital system will have 1,636 inpatient beds; more than 250 outpatient locations throughout Georgia; and nearly 21,000 employees and 3,500 physicians on staff.

Debbie Mitcham, longtime chief financial officer and 25-year veteran of Northside Hospital, will be the new president and CEO of Northside’s Gwinnett health care campuses. Phil Wolfe, who served as president and CEO of the Gwinnett system for the past 13 years, has announced his retirement effective Aug. 28. Other important leadership changes are expected to be announced soon as the combined healthcare networks begin service as one entity.

The merger agreement was approved by the Georgia Office of the Attorney General in November 2017, and in February 2019, the Federal Trade Commission completed its review of the combination and gave its approval to move forward.

Northside Hospital is one of Georgia’s leading health care providers with more than 240 locations across the state, including three acute care, state-of-the-art hospitals in Sandy Springs, Cherokee County and Forsyth County. It leads the nation in newborn deliveries and is among the state’s top providers of cancer care and surgical services.

Gwinnett Health System is nationally recognized, with

hospitals in Lawrenceville and Duluth. Additional facilities include the Gwinnett Women’s Pavilion, the Gwinnett Extended Care Center, Glancy Rehabilitation Center, and outpatient health centers including surgical, imaging and physical, occupational and speech therapy facilities.

Northside is by far the larger of the two operations. It has $1.8 billion in annual revenues through its three hospitals and various care facilities, according to Dun & Bradstreet.

Gwinnett has revenues of about $731 million annually.

Hospital officials said patients of the Gwinnett Health System will notice virtually no changes in their regimen of treatment and care.

Also, beginning this week: • Gwinnett Medical Center-Lawrenceville, located at 1000 Medical Center Blvd., will be called Northside Hospital Gwinnett.

• The Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth, located at 3620 Howell Ferry Road, will be called Northside Hospital Duluth.

• The Gwinnett Extended Care Center at GMC-Lawrenceville, located at 650 Professional Drive, will be called the Northside Gwinnett Extended Care Center.

• The Glancy Rehabilitation Center, located at 3215 McClure Bridge Road in Duluth, will be called Northside Gwinnett Joan Glancy.

Changes to the signage at the facilities will occur in stages.

For care provided at Gwinnett locations beginning August 28, patient bills and statements will be addressed from Northside Hospital, and payments will be made to the same. For care received at Gwinnett locations prior to August 28, patient bills will come from and be payable to Gwinnett Medical Center.

County updates residents on water reclamation facility expansion

ROSWELL, Ga. — Design plans for the Big Creek Water Reclamation Facility Expansion project are nearly complete.

As part of its $300 million upgrade to the plant, Fulton County Public Works staff met with dozens of local residents Aug. 20 at the Chattahoochee Nature Center to provide the latest updates on the project. Design plans are now about 60 percent complete for what Fulton County Director of Public Works David Clark said is the county’s largest capital project.

“A lot of the key decisions have already been made, but some small specifics are going to change,” Clark said.

The expansion will increase the plant’s efficiency and capacity while addressing noise and odor issues that plague the current facility.

The plant property at 1030 Marietta Highway serves the Big Creek watershed

in North Fulton — including Roswell, Alpharetta and portions of Johns Creek and Milton — as well as areas of Forsyth and Cobb counties. Treated water is discharged back to the Chattahoochee River using a biological treatment process.

The upgrades call for replacing aging equipment, an enclosure for new treatment processes, and demolition of older and underused facilities. The new plant will be comparable to the Johns Creek Environmental Campus, said Commissioner Liz Hausmann.

“It’s going to be wonderful,” she said.

“It’s going to be state of the art, odorless and noiseless… Plus, it gives us capacity for population growth that we know is coming so our community won’t ever have to do without a clean water supply.”

The original facility was built in 1971 and is what Clark calls a conventional plant, meaning that it relies exclusively on biological treatment processes.

Design plans are now about 60 percent complete for what Fulton County Director of Public Works David Clark said is the county’s largest capital project.

“The main difference is that the current plant relies just on biology to treat wastewater,” Clark said. “The new plant still has a biological element to it, but then after the water goes through the biology process, it’s going to go through these membranes that strip off the remaining impurities before it gets discharged into the river... The water that is going to be discharged after this plant is constructed is going to be considerably cleaner than what is in the river today.”

The current facility’s treatment capacity is 24 million gallons per day.

The new facility will bring that up to 38 million gallons per day. This increase will accommodate projected population growth in the area until at least 2050, Clark said.

Plans for the facility expansion take

odor and noise control into account.

Small construction activities are expected to take place this fall to set the stage for what needs to be done next year, Clark said.

This year’s construction activities will cover clearing, grading and erosion control. Additional activity includes the demolition of existing structures on the Big Creek site. Structures will be crushed offsite to minimize noise and dust pollution. Any hazardous materials will be handled and removed by professionals.

Construction of the new facility is expected to begin in earnest spring 2020 and continue until summer 2023. Fulton County will hold a final round of public meetings before construction to display the plans and what people can expect during construction.

The Aug. 20 meeting was the third in a series of open houses to collect community input as design plans are created. At least one more open house is planned before the design is finalized toward the end of the year.

Fulton County will provide regular updates on the project while it is under construction.

Alpharetta Mayor’s 5K races to benefit area charities

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — More than 1,500 people — most donning shorts and corporate T-shirts — took to the streets Aug. 22 for the 23rd annual Mayor’s

Corporate Challenge 5K run.

The event, which began at 7 p.m., closed neighboring streets as a flood of spectators and runners alike crowded downtown Alpharetta.

The race is sponsored each year by the Alpharetta Rotary Club with major

corporate sponsorship.

Visitors wound their way throughout the maze of closed-off streets at City Center, wandering from booth to booth, partaking of water, hamburgers, bananas and peanuts.

The race supports a number of local

causes throughout North Fulton and worldwide, said Fran Schefer, Alpharetta Rotary co-chair for the 2019 event.

“The money truly funds important charitable works,” Schefer said. “This is by far our biggest fundraising event of the year.”

Last year’s Mayor’s Corporate Challenge brought in close to $130,000 and netted about $110,000 after expenses, Shefer said.

“We appreciate our local residents for their support, and we’re sensitive to the road closings,” he said, adding that Rotary works hard with the city to keep disruptions to a minimum.

Monica Garrett, community relations director for LexisNexis Risk Solutions, the key corporate sponsor for the run, said the event began in the late ’90s at the company’s headquarters up on Windward Parkway. At that time, she said, the run began in the parking lot and included a loop around the campus.

“It was known as The Windward Challenge,” she said.

Jennifer Richman, spokeswoman for the company, said LexisNexis Risk Solutions reached out to the city and Rotary in 2013 to explore a partnership, and the event took off for downtown.

Alpharetta Mayor Jim Gilvin lined up to lead the race at 7 p.m. sharp.

Standing at the front of the pack, but well over to the side seconds before the start, Gilvin thanked all the sponsors and residents who made the race possible.

Carrington Academy campers donate $1,400 for cancer benefit

By ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — Carrington Academy’s summer campers recently donated $1,400 to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer research.

To raise the money, campers from the Alpharetta, Braselton, Cumming and Suwanee locations set up lemonade stands for families, staff, teachers and fellow campers. The school decided to initiate the project to teach their young campers the importance of helping children who are less fortunate.

“The campers enjoyed planning the lemonade stand, from the beginning of what it would look like all the way to who would run the stand each day,” said Christy Cha, principal of Carrington Academy at Windermere in Cumming.

“Their sense of ownership over the whole project was amazing. It was wonderful listening to the students speak with parents about the lemonade stand and who they were raising money for.”

Cha said student understood the mission and that all proceeds were going to help other children.

“To hear the students talk about

helping other children was very rewarding,” she said.

For two weeks in July, six schools worked together to help the organization. After researching charities that are designated to benefit other children, Carrington Academy selected Alex’s Lemonade Stand as the perfect campaign to lend their efforts. But it was a personal connection with a member of the administration that helped ensure

the final decision to concentrate on cancer research.

“Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is a delightful example of how children can help children and we want to be an integral part of finding a cure for childhood cancer,” Cha said. “This is very close to our hearts as we have a principal at one of the Carrington Academy locations who has a daughter with leukemia.”

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was founded in 2005 by Jay and Liz Scott. Their daughter, Alexanda “Alex,” was diagnosed with childhood cancer after her first birthday. At the age of 4, she told her parents she wanted to set up a lemonade stand of her own and give the money to doctors who can help find a cure. The cause was an instant success raising $2,000 in just one day. When Alex died in 2004 at the age of 8, her parents took her plans to the next level.

The organization quickly began to raise money for cancer research while supporting families of cancer children and raising awareness about the importance of finding a cure.

According to the foundation’s website, more than $150 million has been raised since the first lemonade stand in 2000.

The Carrington Academy campers shared

their desire to help others. Upon discovering the efforts from the Carrington locations, the foundation was excited to hear about the devotion and hard work eagerly displayed by the campers.

“I think Carrington Academy’s efforts have been amazing,” said Tatiana Cunningham, Community Engagement coordinator for the foundation. “It is always awesome to see new schools joining the fight against childhood cancer, and it is great that multiple [Carrington Academy] locations were able to coordinate their stands and reach this level of success with their first year.”

Cunningham said she thinks it’s vital for children to learn about giving back to others at a young age, because it sets them up to be compassionate people and outstanding members of society for the rest of their lives.

“This is a great way to show kids they can make a difference no matter their age and that something as simple as a lemonade stand can have an amazing impact,” she said.

Rescuers step aside to let nature take its course

By Denise Ray For The Forsyth Herald Forsyth County Fire Station 7 responded to a nonemergency call for assistance Aug. 19 when residents along Mountain Top Place reported a thunderstorm trapped two kittens in running water.

Five feral kittens hid under a raised storm drain seeking shelter from the late afternoon thunderstorm. The structure was in a wooded area in the backyard of Doug and Michelle Ward.

The couple had noticed a cat weeks ago and found her nursing a litter of five kittens.

“She’d eat the food I’d left her, and recently she came into my garden,” Michelle said.

Eventually the feline grew comfortable enough to rub against Michelle’s legs.

On the day of the storm, the mother cat tried to move her kittens away from danger and into the woods. As she transported them individually, the last two somehow fell in the drain.

Doug went to the street and lifted manhole covers on both sides, following the flow of the water in an effort to grab the kitten as it travelled through the system.

As he stood watch over the hole, he cautioned a dog-walking neighbor about the openings and explained the situation. The neighbor called the nonemergency line of the Sheriff’s Office.

After assessing the situation Coleman climbed down into the pipe to capture the missing light tan kitten. Meanwhile, the mother had slipped back to the storm drain, grabbed another kitten and carried it off to the woods.

At that point, two felines were unaccounted for, one tan and the other tigerstriped. Soon after, the Wards rescued the tiger-striped baby, and it was placed in a towel-lined container where its mother could find it when she returned from hiding its siblings.

Coleman climbed down three different drains looking for the tan feline. The plan was to wait for the kitten to reach

an opening, and Coleman would catch it with a net.

Almost 20 minutes later, with the kitten not moving toward the opening, rescuers determined that the commotion was doing more harm than good.

The firefighters replaced the manhole covers and left the scene.

“I went out about 30 minutes later, and the orange kitten was gone and so was some food,” Michelle shared.

The quiet paid off as Michelle reported she had spied the mother cat with the tan kitten before dark that night.

She also reported that the mother had come out of the woods to visit the next morning.

“I’m hoping she’ll bring her babies around,” Michelle said.

The plan is to capture the mother and have her spayed and released. As for the babies, the hope is to try to domesticate them if they can be captured.

The age of the kittens has not yet been determined but according to Ward, the mother is still nursing. It is not known how many males and females are in the litter.

Georgia urges support for medal honoring Merrill’s Marauders

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Georgia has joined the effort to urge the U.S. Congress to recognize Merrill’s Marauders for their service and sacrifice during WWII with a Congressional Gold Medal.

Veterans and residents gathered at Alpharetta American Legion Post 201 on Aug. 22 to honor the group and present the resolution to Jonnie Melillo Clasen, daughter of late Merrill’s Marauders’ member and Korean War veteran Vincent Melillo. Melillo Clasen, a Columbus resident, is helping lead the charge to pass the Merrill’s Marauders Congressional Gold Medal Act. The medal is the highest honor Congress can bestow.

Georgia is the second state, behind California, to pass the resolution. Georgia Senate Resolution 466 was passed unanimously by Democrats and Republicans.

Merrill’s Marauders was a volunteer group envisioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1944 to engage in a long-range penetration mission behind enemy lines in Japanese-occupied Burma. They were to cut off the communication and supply lines and capture northern Burma’s only strategic, all-weather airfield in Myitkyina.

The group was officially designated as the 5307th Composite Unit Provisional, code-named “Galahad.” They later became known as Merrill’s Marauders, after their leader Brig. Gen. Frank D. Merrill.

the ground in Asia and the first Americans to fight there since the 1900 Boxer Rebellion, said Georgia Sen. Ed Harbison, a sponsor of the resolution.

They endured months of jungle fighting, starvation, disease, monsoons and isolation, he added. But although

Merrill’s Marauders were believed to be expendable, with no survivors, the group successfully seized their objective, the Myitkyina airfield, on May 17, 1944, Harbison said.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Burma mission.

“Merrill’s Marauders’ uniqueness is part of what has made efforts so difficult for them to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal,” Melillo Clasen said.

“The Georgia resolution — which has been sent to the U.S. Congress — urges passage of S. 743 and H.R. 906, which would award the Congressional Gold Medal to Merrill’s Marauders for their success and sacrifice in the China-Burma-India Theater.”

S. 743 was reintroduced this year by U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, and the time is running out to get it passed, Melillo Clasen said.

When the first bill was introduced in 2016, 28 Merrill’s Marauders were still alive. That number was halved this May when Melillo Clasen accompanied Merrill’s Marauders Bob Passanisi and Gilbert Howland to voice support for the Congressional Gold Medal Act. Since Memorial Day this year, six Merrill’s Marauders have died. Two died since Aug. 10, the 75th anniversary of the unit disbanding in Burma, Melillo

Clasen said.

Nine Merrill’s Marauders are still alive today.

After the special mission was completed, thousands of replacements were flown in to serve with the unit until it disbanded. Although Georgia’s last Merrill’s Marauder, Melillo Clasen’s father Vincent, died, one of the replacement Merrill’s Marauders, Stanley Sasine of the Atlanta area, is still alive.

“There are many more living replacements alive than there are Marauders,” Melillo Clasen said. “Both groups would be eligible for a Congressional Gold Medal if the bills pass in Congress.”

This recognition is long overdue, said American Legion 201 Ambassador Roger Wise.

“They were before rangers,” Wise said. “They were before special forces.

They were a very, very brave group of young men who volunteered to go behind enemy lines realizing that many of them would not come home. They did their duty to God and our country.”

The woman also contacted another scammer, a woman from Jacksonville, Fla., to assist in a public relations campaign. The woman paid her $1,500 in July and another $1,000 in August. The scammer didn’t provide any services and refused to refund the money.

The woman researched the two and discovered that they had a history of scamming people.

Backpack taken from car on visit to country club JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman reported Aug. 16 that her car had been burglar-

ized at the Country Club of the South.

The woman parked her car there at 11 a.m. to go to a tennis appointment.

She placed her Coach backpack underneath her driver’s seat and left the car unlocked.

At 12:30 p.m., the woman returned and couldn’t find the backpack.

The missing items include several credit cards, $80 in cash, a checkbook and the woman’s house keys. Police advised her to cancel her cards and place a fraud alert on her information.

Residence burglarized while owner at work JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating an Aug. 14 incident in which a man’s house was burglarized while he was at work.

The man left his house at Rotherick Drive that morning. He returned at 10 p.m. and found that the rear glass door was smashed.

Inside, the house was ransacked. The missing items include $3,000 in cash, a $2,000 laptop and a check.

Phone bill alerts man to fraudulent accounts JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A man called police Aug. 14 after he found several fraudulent entries on his credit reports.

The man had received a $3,400 phone bill from Sprint two days prior for an account he didn’t have. He called Sprint and initiated an internal fraud investigation.

Suspicious, the man also looked into his credit reports and found multiple accounts opened under his name.

All of the fraudulent accounts were opened July 2019. The man froze his credit to prevent any further fraud.

Parked car burglarized while in driveway JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A man called police Aug. 14 after he realized someone had burglarized his car.

The man had parked his car at Easthaven Place the previous evening. The next morning at 8 a.m., he noticed some items missing.

The missing items include a toolbox, one pair of $250 sunglasses and copies of his family’s Social Security cards. Police said there was no damage to the car.

Manager falls victim to phone scammer JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The manager of a Walgreens on Hospital Parkway called police Aug. 12 after he realized the store had been scammed out of $1,500 in gift cards.

The manager received a phone call that evening from someone claiming to represent Western Union. The caller said he needed the manager to run a diagnostic on their computer and said there was an issue with the store’s gift card system.

The caller than told the manager to activate three gift cards for $500 each and read off the numbers.

Shortly after doing so, the manager received a call from the Walgreens corporate office about the transactions.

The manager voided the cards, but it is unknown if the caller was able to empty the cards before they were voided.
