JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a case of credit card fraud reported June 24 in which someone charged $8,455 on a Johns Creek woman’s card, primarily for dental care.

The woman told police that she uses the card for the majority of her purchases including at the gas pump, online and restaurants, but she is unsure how her card was compromised.

Police learned the suspect set up a dental appointment in Hoover, Alabama.

The employee who set up the appointment identified the suspected credit card thief as a woman from their conversations over the phone. The dentist’s office requires pre-payment for their services, and the dentist’s office worker said that the woman was persistent about getting the appointment soon.

The Johns Creek woman still had her card at the time of the call, police said.

Police apprehend suspect in shoplifting incident JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Target store at 5950 State Bridge Road reported a shoplifter who had been stealing multiple TI-84 graphing calculators on June 24.

The store security officer told police the male suspect was cutting tags off of the calculators and removing their packaging, and then placing them in his blue shopping bag.

The suspect was exiting the store as the police officer talked to the store’s security officer. He saw the suspect, who was holding a bag full of calculators with a total value of $664.95. All five of the packages had the security tags cut off,

Public Safety and the suspect had a pair of wire cutters on his person.

The security officer told police that the suspect had committed this same act a few hours earlier that day, but he hadn’t had a chance to report to police until then.

Police took the suspect to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department where his fingerprints were checked for other pending charges. Police obtained a Fulton County warrant for theft by shoplifting greater than $500.

Scammer impersonates Johns Creek police chief JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police responded to several calls from residents around the metro-Atlanta area on June 26 that they had received calls from a man claiming to be Johns Creek police officer.

One woman from Dallas, Georgia, said she received a call from a person claiming to be Lt. Nick Curry. The woman tried to call him back immediately, but got an automated answer telling her she had reached the Johns Creek Police Department with options to reach different departments. Each option led to a prompt to leave a message and your phone number.

The woman left a message and received a call back later that day from someone claiming to be Ed Densmore, the police chief. The caller claimed she had a failure to appear warrant from Johns Creek and requested she purchase prepaid cards to prevent police from coming to her home and arresting her, she told police.

After she gave the suspect the prepaid card numbers, she became suspicious and called the department directly.

Alleged gang member threatens man’s family JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police responded to a report on June 27 that a Johns Creek man had received a text from a man identifying himself as a member of

the gang, Mara Salvatrucha, commonly known as MS-13.

The man received threats from the texter that he had been messing with “his girl,” he told police, and that if he did not pay him what he wanted, he would kill a member of the man’s family.

The text said in Spanish that he should get in touch with him if he did not want a family member to die. The texts also included multiple pictures of mutilated bodies, according to police.

The man told police he did not know the texter or the number he was messaging him from. He also said he had not been messing around with any women.

He attempted to call the number and told police that someone answered in Spanish and a second person got on the phone, speaking in broken English with a Spanish accent.

Police took pictures of the texts and advised the man to preserve the messages.

Apartment resident reports assault while working out JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police on June 29 in response to an incident where he was assaulted by a man for unknown reasons.

The man, who is of Asian descent, told police that the man threatened him at the gym in his apartment complex.

The assailant threatened to kill him if he disrespected his wife before pushing him into one of the pieces of gym equipment, he told police. Police reported injury to the man’s back.

A witness, who was training at the gym when the incident occurred, said the assailant made racially offensive statements before pushing the man who had not provoked the attack.

The victim said he believes the unidentified suspect lives in his apartment complex, though he does not know where.

Footage from the gym cameras was not immediately available to police.

Public gets first look at Chattahoochee Greenway plan Path would run from Buford Dam south to Newnan

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Big plans are underway for the Chattahoochee River.

Consultants are studying how to build a 100-mile greenway along the waterway, connecting Buford Dam to Chattahoochee Bend State Park.

The Atlanta Regional Commission, in conjunction with nonprofit The Trust for Public Land, the city of Atlanta and Cobb County, has commissioned an 18-month study to develop plans for such a greenway.

The goals of the study are to promote ecological preservation, increase biking and walking, improve access to the river and surrounding cultural landmarks, and to make the waterway a crown jewel for the Atlanta Region.

The Chattahoochee Riverlands project is made up of three types of trails.

The greenway would be the main multiuse trail running along the river. Tributary trails would connect the greenway to existing parks, cultural landmarks and trails, like the Big Creek Greenway.

The “blueway” would include recreational opportunities on the river.

The project is also divided into northern, middle and southern legs of the river. Stretching from Buford Dam in Forsyth County to the state park in Newnan, Ga., the greenway could connect suburban, urban and rural parts of the region.

Along the northern, or suburban, section of the waterway, the Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area and its network of parks could be an asset for the project, but low-density subdivisions and little public transporta-

At a June 23 public input session in Johns Creek, some attendees said they were worried about how the project could affect their neighborhoods.

“Please avoid residential property and respect the privacy of the property owners along the river,” one commenter wrote.

“No trail in Ammersee Lakes or Atlanta Athletic Club!!” wrote another.

“Jones Bridge to [Chattahoochee River Environmental Education Center] is wild, native habitat for plants and animals,” said one comment. “Enhance, do not destroy natural feel, Barnwell corridor.”

Other comments were more positive.

“Would love for neighborhoods on Forsyth side to have access,” one person wrote.

“Could be premiere whitewater destination,” another said.

The study began last fall, and the design team has spent the past several months researching the region, its history, demographics and ecological concerns along the river. This summer,

the team has begun sharing preliminary plans and seeking public input for the project.

“We’re still early on in the process, but this is the first time we’re really unveiling our aspirations to the public,” Riverlands Designer Chris Barnes said.

“We like to think that the science and data in conjunction with the community input work together to create this vision.”

Local teens start nonprofit for mental health

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — With depression and anxiety rising among adolescents, there is a growing movement to improve mental healthcare, and one person leading the charge is a teen herself.

Samruddhi Panse is a rising senior at Mount Pisgah and the founder of Compass Movement. She saw the seriousness of suicide among teens and decided to do something to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for teens between 15 and 19 years old, according to the Center for Disease Control, and 1 in 10 Georgians between 12 and 17 said they have had at least one depressive episode in a year, according the department of Health and Human Services.

Despite the pervasiveness of mental illness, there is a stigma surrounding diseases like depression and anxiety, Panse said. She hopes by raising awareness and starting a conversation she can encourage people to seek help and show them they are supported.

“We’re centered around conversation,” Panse said. “We’re centered around building this community who’s open to talking about mental health,

mental illness, how we can help others and really training each other to recognize when we are at risk.”

Panse and other high school students, with the guidance of licensed counselor Carmy Howard, run a blog where teens can share their stories and advice for people struggling with mental illness.

“We’re trying to get the word out that it is OK to not be OK,” Panse said.

“That’s our motto.”

The blog, at compassmovement.org, includes an “Ask Carmy” section where people can anonymously submit questions about mental health to a licensed professional.

Outside of Howard, the group is entirely run by teens. Panse believes having the support coming from teenagers is beneficial for other adolescents who are struggling.

“There is only so much adults can do,” Panse said. “You feel support and trust and comforted when adults are involved. At the same time, when everything is coming from adults it feels like it’s a one-way street, like adults preach to you and lecture you.”

The group is nearly a year old and moving forward. Panse said she’d like to start social media pages and share videos on YouTube and Instagram to reach a wider audience.

When I was a kid, I was a huge fan of Myth Busters. Who doesn’t like watching stuff being blown up on TV with the excuse that it’s for science?

It was a test for how well people could drive after missing out on sleep.

Their conclusions? When you drive sleep deprived, you might as well be drunk.

You’re driving that poorly.

It seems like a simple enough fix.

Just don’t drive when you’re tired. Get more sleep. Problem solved, right?

The disconnect there for me is that we seem to live in a society that champions sleep deprivation.

It’s a common bragging right, especially among students. How many times have you heard someone talk about how late they stayed up last night with a grin on their face, only for another to butt in about how they only got three hours of sleep. As if it’s a contest, one in which no one wins.

How many think pieces have you read crowing about the author’s productivity and genius for starting their days at 5 a.m., 4 a.m. Without mentioning that to get the recommended eight hours of sleep, that means they would have to go to bed at 8 p.m.

If you can achieve that schedule and are happy with it, and I mean this sincerely, more power to you. It’s just not for me.

For most people, including myself, if you go to bed that early, you have no social life and are boring. It’s called night life for a reason, after all. That’s when all the parties, movies and social gatherings are held. It’s important to go have fun and live a little every now and then.

But if you wake up later than usual to recover from your night out or night working on some project, you’re lazy and have wasted the whole day.

So, you might bite the bullet and go to work or school after four hours of sleep. That’s what coffee is for, to get you through the day.

People joke all the time about being addicted to coffee, and don’t get me wrong, I love my caffeine. It is a little concerning, however, to be reminded that caffeine is considered the most commonly used drug in the world and to hear someone say, unironically, that they can’t get through the day without their morning cup of joe, because they’re so sleep deprived.

The effects of sleep deprivation are numerous, including memory issues, mood changes, weakened immunity, weight gain and high blood pressure — there’s a reason it’s been used as a form of torture. Yet, people continue to put it on the backburner when faced with their ever growing “to do” list.

I don’t have all the answers for how to improve sleep in your life — there are hundreds, thousands, of articles and talks online with information about that topic from people much more qualified to talk about it. But people shouldn’t neglect sleep so much and should stop applauding lack of sleep.

Please, if you have the opportunity, try to go to bed a little earlier tonight or take a quick nap. Be kind to yourself.

Cricket scores big in Johns Creek

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — This summer, Shakerag Park became the first public park in the state with cricket batting cages.

Shafiq Jadavji, a member of the city’s Recreation and Parks Advisory Committee who was instrumental in their installation, compared the cages to the moon landing: a small step for Johns Creek, but a giant leap for cricket in Georgia.

These days in the United States, cricket is overshadowed by its bat-andball cousin, baseball, but the history of cricket in this country actually precedes “America’s pastime.”

The first international cricket match, what some deem to be the first international game ever, was between the U.S. and Canada in 1844. Baseball did not catch on until the Civil War.

Cricket 101

Cricket made a resurgence in America in the late 20th century, largely thanks to immigration from the West Indies and South Asia where the sport is more popular.

More than a quarter of Johns Creek’s population is Asian, according to 2017 U.S. Census data, with Indian being the largest group, around 10 percent, creating a subculture of cricket players and fans.

Jadavji, a lifelong cricket enthusiast, has made it his goal to spread the sport in the city. He said when he moved to Johns he was at first disheartened by the lack of engagement between the city and parts of its diverse population.

“How do you create engagement?”

Jadavji asked. “There are some universal languages, such as art, music, culture, sports.”

Batting: Offensive players try to hit the ball with a bat to score runs. There are two batters on the field at any time.

Pitch: The pitch is a rectangular strip of compact ground 66 feet long where the bowling and batting take place.

Bowling: Bowlers throw a hard leather ball toward the batter, the equivalent of pitching in baseball.

Field: Cricket is played on a grass, ovalshaped field with a pitch in the center.

Fields are typically between 450 feet and 500 feet in diameter.

Fielders: Fielders are defensive players spread throughout the field.

Innings: There are two innings in most games. Each team has one turn at bat.

Out: The goal of the defensive team is to force batters out, by bowling so the batter swings at a ball without hitting it, catching a ball that has been hit, knocking over a wicket before the batters complete a run, or other methods. Once every batter is out the inning ends.

Over: An over is six pitches. After an over,

Runs: A run is scored when a batter hits the ball and both batters run the length of the pitch before the fielders retrieve the ball.

Twenty20: Also known as T20, this style of cricket limits each team to twenty overs, keeping most games around three hours long. Traditional games of cricket could last for several days. Introduced in the United Kingdom in 2003, T20 helped commercialize the game internationally.

Wicket: At each end of the pitch are wickets composed of three wooden stakes, called stumps, with two crosspieces, called bails, lying on top. If the bails are knocked over, a batter is out.

Wide: If the bowler throws the ball too wide or too high, the umpire can rule the batting team scores a run.

Work begins on permanent home for Wall that Heals JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Veterans Association broke ground in Newtown Park July 3 for installation of the Wall that Heals memorial monument.

Guest speakers at the event included Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker and Walkway Memorial Chairman Mike Mizell, with Johns Creek Veterans Association member Roger Wise leading the color guard march.

The Wall that Heals, a half-scale replica of the original Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., measures 375 feet in length and stands up to 7.5 feet tall. Since it’s unveiling in 1996, the monument has toured some 600 cities.

The traveling replica last visited Metro Atlanta in 2017. On its visit to Newtown Park that year, the monument drew some 8,500 people.

“I was out there Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock and this lady looked over her shoulder and she said Mr. Wise is that you?” Wise recalled.

“And I said yes it’s me, and she said can you wait a minute I want to introduce you to my son. I waited about 10 or 15 minutes and this grown man gets up from the replica with tears in his eyes

and he said ‘thank you for bringing this wall here. I met my father today.’ His mother was three months pregnant with him when his dad died in Vietnam.”

The positive impact the “Healing Wall” made on Vietnam veterans on hand at Newtown Park sparked interest among the city, the Johns Creek Veteran Association and local philanthropists to set in motion a plan to provide a permanent home for the piece.

With a city commitment of $80,000, funding from the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau and other local contributions for installation and maintenance, the city was awarded the monument last year.

The wall displays the more than 58,000 names of U.S. service men and women who lost their lives in Vietnam.

The Veteran’s Memorial Walk in Newtown Park has 4 acres dedicated to respecting the military and veterans from past wars, making it among the largest memorials in the nation.

Construction and installation for the permanent replica is expected to be completed and open to the public Nov. 18.

Umpiring program goes beyond balls and strikes for 25 years

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Attend a youth baseball or softball game at Bell Memorial Park or North Park and there is a good chance the umpire calling the game will have gone through the Hopewell Youth Umpire Program. The program began quickly and out of necessity, but over the past 25 years it has had an immeasurable impact on local teens who learn far more than making calls on the field.

An oversight by the Hopewell Youth Association in 1996 led Jim Cregge to create the program. Cregge said the association had a record number of registrations that year, and the registration fees did not cover umpire costs for the entire season. Cregge was tasked with finding a solution, and he hired three teens he paid out of pocket that season to serve as umpires.

Since its humble beginnings, the program has evolved beyond umpiring into a mentorship and life-skills program that teaches interviewing, decision-making, co-worker support, how to handle confrontation and how to properly com-

municate as an adult.

Maliha Hasan has spent four seasons in the program and said it has given her invaluable experiences.

“It has provided me with an extremely well-paying job with immense flexibility, but it has also pushed me into an open, comforting job environment in which I learn a lot in,” Hasan said. “One of the most important aspects of this job is being able to deal with coaches and parents, even when they are angry. I have learned how to always respond in a professional manner no matter how emotional I get.”

Brent Reeves said the program gave his son vital life skills, including how to prepare for a job interview and accountability where, “well, he’s just a teenager,” is no excuse.

“Jim treats these kids like they are coming out of college looking for their first job,” Reeves said. “The interview process is intense, but it makes it even more special when you get the job. Jim will copy parents on important messages, but he expects the kids to keep their own schedule, communicate directly and

Peter Hildebrandt is a businessman and freelance string bassist who has been a member of the Johns Creek Symphony for five years. He currently owns a consulting firm that works with larger companies to bring new products to market and a music stand light manufacturing business.

Marilyn Margolis is the CEO of Emory Johns Creek Hospital. She began her career at Emory Healthcare more than 35 years ago at Emory University hospital as a staff nurse. Sover, a Johns Creek resident, said her novel, “Double-Crossing the Bridge,” combines the heist action of “Ocean’s 11” with the dark, irreverent humor of “Deadpool.”

“It’s an atypical fantasy about a group of trolls that go on a suicidal heist,” she said. “It’s weird.”

Sover said her journey to becoming a published author, a goal she’s held since middle school, was about “embracing her weird side.”

“I’m hoping I get a lot of reactions like ‘what the hell did I just read?’” she said. “Hopefully, it will brighten somebody’s day and maybe confuse a few family members.”

When she’s not writing Sover is a stay-at-home mom who enjoys swing dancing, painting, creating jewelry, gardening and death metal music.

Alpharetta to host inaugural expo for special needs services

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta is poised to host the first North Fulton Special Needs Services and Expo.

The free expo will be held on Saturday, July 27 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Alpharetta Community Center, 175 Roswell St. The cities of Johns Creek, Milton and Roswell as well as the Ed Isakson YMCA are partners in the expo.

“The inspiration for this event comes from the cities involved and the agencies’ desire to provide more activities, programming and both informational and fun events for this exceptional population,” said Christine Young, Alpharetta Recreation Services Manager. “It was the vision of the North Fulton Special Needs Task Force that was formed by the leadership of the North Fulton cities and other providers of services for individuals and families with special needs to collectively work together to improve the quality of life for

The expo will bring together resources for parents and care givers of people with special needs. Some of the businesses and resources available at the expo will include medical professionals, education resources, respite care, therapy, life skills, job training, fitness and recreation. Children’s activities will be scattered throughout the event.

“People who are navigating through

the myriad of information and agencies available to them will find this event helpful, as well as seasoned parents and care givers finding undiscovered resources for their children, teens and young adults,” Young said.

The expo will also help advocate for people with disabilities and provide a networking opportunity to build relationships, Young added.

“This annual event will continue to

grow and provide valuable resources to parents and create partnerships with the businesses and agencies involved,” she said.

BrewAble Cafe, a nonprofit dedicated to providing meaningful employment for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, will provide tea, coffee and snacks. It is available yearround in the Alpharetta Community Center lobby.

Expo staff expect 25-30 vendors this year and are still accepting vendor applications until noon on Monday, July 8. Vendor costs are $25 for nonprofits and $50 for commercial businesses. All proceeds will be entered into a raffle and awarded to one of the attendee families to be used toward one of the services represented at the expo, Young said.

Holbrook to invest $1 billion to expand Southeast footprint

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Holbrook CEO Al Holbrook has announced a $1 billion plan to expand the Alpharetta-based firm’s presence in the Southeast.

Holbrook develops, owns and manages distinctive active adult and assisted living communities including Holbrook Communities and Dogwood Forest.

The firm has two communities opening this year.

Holbrook Decatur, a 200-unit community, is set to open this month on Clairmont Drive near Emory, and Holbrook Acworth, which includes 207 residences and 10 cottages, is scheduled to open in October.

Plans are underway to open Holbrook Woodstock in the summer of 2020 with more than 300 homes and cottages.

The company is also searching for a site to open an upscale residential community in Nashville. Plans are already in the works for developments in Greenville and Charleston, South Carolina.

The market for senior living housing is trending upward as baby boomers downsize.

The U.S. retirement communities industry will realize $72 billion in revenue this year, according to market research firm IBIS World. The industry employs some 1 million workers in close to 50,000 businesses.

Signs of the uptick are already evident locally.

Alpharetta has recently seen an increase in interest for assisted living.

The city currently has 10 assisted living facilities in operation, and another 425 assisted living rooms are under construction.

And there is room for more.

There are 21 parcels of land in the city where assisted living is permitted by right. These parcels are not exclusive to assisted living, however, and could compete with interests providing offices and many other low-impact commercial and retail uses.

Data showing strong economy outpacing workforce As many of you know, I’m a news junkie when it comes to things that are happening here in Georgia. After reading articles in several papers this week, I’m going to ask a question I know most of Geoff smith you have a very pasAssurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com sionate answer for: Is it possible that we need MORE people to move to Atlanta?

I’m pretty sure I know the kneejerk reaction answer that most of you just blurted out, making those around you look at you with concern for your well-being. It’s no secret that the biggest complaint residents in Atlanta have is our traffic. I know most of you scoff at the idea that we need more people moving to Atlanta. So I’m making this paragraph long so as to get distance from my question and the rest of this article so you can calm down and look at it soberly.

OK. From articles I’ve been reading, our job market is growing faster than our growth in new residents. And our unemployment rate is basically at what most experts consider “full pool.” Meaning everyone who wants a job, has a job.

The Georgia Labor Department reported that 9,600 new jobs were created in the Metro Atlanta area just last May. It’s actually a good bit down from the 15,900 that were created in the same month a year earlier. But in the last 12 months, 52,400 new jobs have been created.

The next article I read was in the Atlanta Business Chronicle that talked about workforce shortage and what specifically North Fulton officials are trying to do about it. This wasn’t really news to me. I sat for several years on the Steering Committee for the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce’s

Workforce Development Committee called The Talent Coalition. It was spearheaded by Gary Campbell, director of community affairs for the staffing agency Hire Dynamics, and Bethany Usry, who served the chamber as vice president of Talent and Economic Development. We took aim at the tech and healthcare sectors in North Fulton, trying to determine where there might be skills gaps.

In working with our area hospitals and tech companies, we amassed data and learned a great deal about their workforce needs. The committee found that both sectors were having to hire less-qualified professionals, then spend a good deal of money and resources to train them on the job. The result was a collaboration with Fulton County Schools, Gwinnett Tech and other local entities to start up new certification classes at Gwinnett Tech, an information campaign to let people know that these jobs were out there, and a closer collaboration with Fulton County Schools. School professionals and elected board members like Katie Reeves were highly involved and the committee was highly influential in the creation of and development of the new STEMfocused high school under construction in downtown Alpharetta. The school, in addition to the help from Gwinnett Tech, should provide the opportunity for more people to ease into quality tech and healthcare jobs. But if we are at full-pool employment, to fill all of the jobs, we may also need more people.

Julie Haley, CEO and co-founder of Edge Solutions, a tech-company in Alpharetta, was also plugged into the Chamber’s Talent Coalition and said that there are more than 20,000 tech jobs going unfulfilled right now just in Alpharetta. In the same Atlanta Business Chronicle article, Wellstar North Fulton President John-Paul Croom echoed the sentiment for his industry: “It’s a constant struggle to find critical care nurses, operating room nurses, lab technicians, radiology technicians,

central sterile, respiratory therapists,” he said.

Certainly our workforce is growing every year with the graduation of new workers out of high school and college, but it seems it is not keeping up. And with employment at full-pool, companies in those industries are either going to have to pull employees from other companies within their own industries, or pull employees from companies in other industries.

The upside to this is a competition for workers, which should drive up wages, something that is needed in the metro area. My next article will touch on that, as I had the pleasure of talking with Kerry Armstrong, who currently serves as the chairman of the Atlanta Regional Commission. While many have been complaining of an affordable housing shortage, he suggested that it’s also a wage shortage. Meaning the rise in home values has outpaced the rise in workers’ wages.

So while many of you would love to put up a wall around Atlanta until our transit systems catch up, the risk is giving new businesses reasons not to move here, and existing businesses reasons to look elsewhere. There is a fine and steep line between growing and the other thing.

Your guide to understanding breast density Q&A with Dr. Lynn Baxter, Director of Breast Imaging at Northside Hospital On July 1, 2019, a new law took effect in Georgia that mandates that patients with dense breast tissue identified on their mammograms be notified of this finding in the letter they receive explaining their mammogram results.

Q: What is breast density?

A: Breast density is a measure of how much fibroglandular (dense) tissue is present in a woman’s breast compared to how much fatty tissue is present.

Breast density can vary with factors such as age, changes in weight, and hormone usage, but for many women it does not change throughout adulthood.

Q: How do I know how dense my breasts are?

A: The doctor who reads your mammogram will indicate in their report which of the 4 categories best matches the appearance of your breasts. This information will be sent to your doctor and you will also be notified in your results letter.

Q: Can I tell how dense my breasts are based on how they feel?

A: Breast density does not relate to how breasts look or how firm they feel.

The only way to determine how much dense tissue is present is with an imaging test like a mammogram.

Q: Why is breast density important?

A: Breast density is important for two reasons. First, dense breast tissue can hide a cancer on mammography.

Dense tissue looks white on a mammogram. Cancers also look white on a mammogram, so they may not stand out against the background of dense tissue.

Fatty tissue looks dark gray on a mammogram, making cancers much easier to spot. Second, recent research has shown that having dense breasts may also be a risk for getting breast cancer, independent of family history or other risk factors. Though this risk is small, it is significant. For women with heterogeneously dense tissue, the risk is about 1.2 times that of the average woman. For women with extremely dense tissue, the risk is about 2 times that of the average woman. For comparison, the risk for a woman who had no children before age 30 is 1.9 times that of a woman who had children earlier.

Q: If I have dense tissue, do I still need a mammogram?

A: Yes. Mammography is the only test of any kind proven to save lives from breast cancer. Some of the earliest breast cancers are only visible on mammography, even in patients with dense breasts. Yearly mammography is recommended for all women over the age of 40.

Any other tests should be performed in addition to mammography, not instead of mammography.

Q: Should I have a 3D mammogram?

A: Breast Tomosynthesis (also known as 3D mammography) has been shown to find additional cancers in women with all types of breast density and has also been shown to reduce the number of women recalled for additional imaging. All women should consider tomosynthesis to maximize the benefits of mammography.

Q: If I have dense tissue, do I need other tests in addition to mammography?

A: Regardless of your breast density, it can be helpful to speak with your healthcare provider about your individual risk for breast cancer. MRI has been recommended by the American College of Radiology, American Cancer Society, and other organizations for many years as a supplement to mammography for all women with a 20% or greater lifetime risk of breast cancer. This includes women with genetic mutations such as BRCA and their close relatives, women with a history of radiation therapy to the chest between the ages of 10 and 30 (such as those who had Hodgkin’s Disease), and other high risk patients. The American College of Radiology recently updated its guidelines to also recommend yearly MRI for women with a personal history of breast cancer plus dense breasts and women with any breast density who had breast cancer before age 50. MRI is often covered by insurance for women with these types of risk factors.

If your breasts are dense, but you do not have other risk factors, you and your provider should discuss additional screening options, which can find some additional cancers, but can also lead to further testing and biopsies for findings that are not cancerous.

If you choose to have additional screening, MRI is the test that has been shown to find the most additional cancers while minimizing the number of additional tests needed for findings that are not cancer. The most important large national study that compared mammography, MRI, and ultrasound showed that

What are some early menopause symptoms?

Adding ultrasound to this combination did not find any additional cancers and resulted in recommendations for many more biopsies – more than 92% of which did not show cancer. For these reasons screening breast ultrasound should only be considered for patients who medically cannot have MRI. Recently, a new type of MRI called “Fast MRI” has been developed to provide a quicker, less-costly alternative for women with dense breasts who do not have additional risk factors. This is not usually covered by insurance, but is offered at Northside at an affordable selfpay price.

When is a rash not a rash?

By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta During my dermatology residency, our professors loved to talk about “imitators” – the diseases that mimic other diseases and can Dr. Taylor fool the unsuspecting student. Historically, the “Great Imitator” was syphilis because it could affect so many organ systems and manifest on the skin in numerous ways. Syphilis can show up as a sore on the skin, sores in the mouth, a rash, nodules, a collapsed nasal bridge, dementia, deafness and can occur in many other forms. Sir William Osler, one of the four founding physicians of Johns Hopkins Hospital, once said “the physician who knows syphilis knows medicine.”

Nowadays, penicillin has suppressed syphilis to a great degree, and family doctors are so expert at diagnosing syphilis that it rarely makes its way to the dermatologist before being caught by someone else. Still, one of the joys of practicing medicine is making a diagnosis that is either challenging or obscure, and dermatologists across the country are ever vigilant for imitators.

There are other diseases that qualify as imitators, and for this week’s article, I thought it worth mentioning a few of the common imitators that I see in clinic.

For the following diseases, patients often present complaining of a “skin rash,” but what they have turns out to not be rash at all or to not be skin-based.

1. Actinic pupura – This term means sun-induced bruise. Many mature patients have bruises on the backs of their hands and their forearms, and they sometimes present to clinic asking about a rash in these locations. These are actually bruises, and they occur because years of sun-damage causes skin to bruise easily. Actinic purpura is the diagnosis when bruises are occurring only on the sun-damaged dorsal hands and forearms. Actinic purpura is, in general, not a worry. If bruises occur in areas that haven’t seen the sun, then we have to worry about a different diagnosis such as low platelets, leukemias or other blood disorders.

2. Notalgia paraesthetica – Say that word ten times fast (or even just once?!).

Patients present to my clinic asking about a rash on their upper back, but there is no rash at all. The skin is completely normal, but patients are itching and uncomfortable. Notalgia paraesthetica is itching of the back caused by varying amounts of arthritis or degenerative changes in the

For really severe cases, nerve dulling medicines are sometimes helpful.

3. Diffuse actinic keratoses – Actinic keratoses or “AK’s” are pre-cancers.

Because patients’ sun damage is often over an entire area such as the entire cheek or scalp, patients sometimes present to clinic worried about a rash that turns out to be a field of pre-cancers.

Creams and light therapies (PDT) can help eliminate these growths before they turn into skin cancer.

4. Poikiloderma of Civatte – This is another false rash that comes from sun-damage. It occurs as a red-brown mottling of the skin usually on the neck that patients dislike either because of its cosmetic appearance or because it can sometimes be mildly irritated and symptomatic. Laser treatments in combination with sun protection can improve this condition.

5. Stasis dermatitis – In this case, the problem is actually a rash, but I include it on this list because it’s so often misdiagnosed. Patients come to clinic because they keep having “cellulitis” (skin infection) over and over, but they do not have a skin infection. Rather, their veins are not working, and venous reflux leads to inflammation in the skin that mimics a skin infection. True leg skin infections are usually in only one leg and stasis dermatitis often affects both legs repetitively. Very effective modern vein treatments (such as EVLA & ECA) are available to fix the venous system and help with leg pain, swelling or stasis dermatitis.

Protecting your eyes this summer The Georgia summer is in full swing which means spending long days at the pool or lake, enjoying foot long hotdogs at a Braves game, hiking in the North Georgia Mountains, or maybe even taking a trip down to the beach.

No matter what your summer activity of choice is, all of us will certainly be exposed to a common element: the Sun. What many people do not understand about the Sun is that even though we need the Sun’s light to live, our star also has a dark side (no pun intended). The Sun gives off radiation in the form of ultraviolet (UV) rays, which are invisible to our eyes. While most of us know to protect our skin from the sun, eye protection often gets overlooked.

When stinging, hot, pink or red burns begin to appear on our skin after spending even just a few minutes in the sun, we know it’s time to go inside. Radiation from the Sun’s UV rays not only burn our skin, but can actually harm our tissues and DNA. While it’s easy to notice a developing sunburn on our bodies, we often forget how the sun can damage our eyes. Some people’s eyes are so sensitive to sunlight that they cannot bare to go outside without sunglasses, but others are less sensitive to the sun’s brightness and this is when the damage is done. Without wearing 100% UV protection sunglasses, the sun’s UV radiation enters our eyes and can cause a plethora of problems like cataracts, photo-

keratitis (sunburn of the surface of the eye), retinal damage, and even ocular cancers.

If you feel apprehensive going to lounge by the pool, lake or beach, you are wise to want to protect yourself. The good news though, is that sun damage to eyes is totally preventable! Just make sure you consult with your doctor or optician on which sunglasses will give you the best protection and still allow you to see clearly if you wear glasses or contacts. For starters, make sure that your sunglasses are labeled either UV400 or 100% UV-A and UV-B protection. Wrap-around sunglasses are the best way to prevent UV rays from entering on the sides. Don’t forget- if you wear UV protection contacts, you still need UV protection sunglasses! A few other tips include wearing a hat, avoid sun exposure at midday, if possible, and wear your protection even if it is cloudy, because UV radiation can penetrate haze and clouds.

Have fun in the sun this summer, but remember to stay safe and protect your skin AND eyes!

on time, and he doesn’t tolerate late or absent. If a kid has a conflict, he leaves it to them to find a replacement and work it out, but the job has to be done.”

Brandon Lee, a recent Cambridge graduate, said four years in the umpiring program provided him valuable work experience and showed him “how the real world operates.” Lee said he was taught how to conduct himself in a business environment after he dropped a game he was scheduled to umpire as the game approached. He said Cregge “let me hear it,” and he was thankful for the experience.

Lee also credits the program for developing him into a leader. He partially ran the program last season.

“The umpire program offered so much to me and I am incredibly grateful that I was a part of it,” Lee said. “From

the relationships I made, the lessons I learned, and the experiences I had, the youth umpire program is something I will never forget.”

Though Cregge serves as the Milton Parks and Recreation Director, his umpiring program is not affiliated with the city and operates entirely outside of his job duties.

While his umpires receive pay for their work, Cregge said he is reimbursed in non-monetary ways.

“I have never made a dime doing this, but I get paid by watching young people blossom before my eyes and when umpires from the past contact me on breaks from college and as they enter adulthood to thank me,” Cregge said.

“This has truly been a blessing in my life.”

Applications for the 25th year of the program are being taken until July 14.

Cricket: Continued from Page 7 So Jadavji worked to facilitate engagement through cultural sharing. He was part of the team that spearheaded the Johns Creek International Festival, and he sees introducing cricket as part of that goal.

“Being a first-generation migrant is not easy,” Jadavji said. “For kids, it’s easy. Adopt a new sport? No big deal.

You go to school; you play baseball; you pick up basketball. The parents, the first-generation migrants, they still love the sport of cricket.”

Last fall, Jadavji saw his vision take shape when the City Council allocated $30,000 to build cricket fields at Shakerag Park.

“It took a few years to educate City Council members: what is the sport of cricket?” Jadavji said. “I’ve sat down with City Council members dressed up in a cricket outfit, cricket pads, bat, helmet and said, ‘Ok, this is the field. You play in the middle.’”

Building the first cricket batting cages in the region was a struggle for the city and its contractors just to figure out the specifications. A cricket pitch is a similar length to the distance from a baseball pitcher to home plate, but the surface is flat, with no mound.

Cricket bowlers run forward before a throw, so unlike enclosed baseball cages, the new cages at Shakerag are open on one end. Also, while most of the cages’ flooring is concrete covered by artificial turf, on the open end there is a bouncier playground surface beneath the turf, which is easier for the bowlers to run on.

There was a ribbon cutting ceremony for the cricket batting cages on June 11, with some City Council members in attendance to witness the sport firsthand.

“As our community continues to diversify, Johns Creek is going to persist in providing our residents facilities for recreation,” Mayor Mike Bodker said at a council meeting. “The project is a result

of the teamwork between our city and our community, and nothing makes me prouder.”

Jadavji said he was overjoyed with the development.

“It’s not just about the sport,” Jadavji said. “It’s about the engagement, and this is a tremendous opportunity to engage a segment of the Johns Creek population that has historically not been as engaged.”

Jadavji said these batting cages could be just the beginning for making Johns Creek a hub for cricket in the Southeast. He hopes to start a middle school and high school league, see a full cricket field built at Cauley Creek park

and make Johns Creek the home of a professional team.

USA Cricket, the governing body for cricket in the country, is working to create a six-team professional league. With warm weather, an international airport and bigname corporate sponsors like Coca-Cola, Atlanta has the potential to be a leader in the sport for America, Jadavji said.

If this vision becomes a reality, it will have begun with a grassroots movement in Johns Creek.

“We have a tremendous opportunity to meet the needs of the community, capture what is going to happen and make Johns Creek the center of cricket in the Southeast,” he said.

Forsyth woman competing on national soccer stage

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — Anyone else would call it a struggle, but Allison Hickman mapped out a path to soccer’s elite a long time ago. And, she would remind you, it’s a passion more than a struggle.

The Forsyth County wife, mother, career woman and goal keeper, is competing on a team vying for the championship July 10-14 at the U.S. Adult Soccer Association Nationals in Lancaster, Mass.

At 52, that’s a big deal, right?

“I’m glad you think so, I don’t think anything of it because I’ve been doing it all my life,” Hickman said. “I’ve been playing since I was 12 years old.”

A regular team member in the Georgia Amateur Women’s Soccer Association in Atlanta, Hickman is heavily recruited by teams around the country. She’s

played in tournaments on teams from six different states.

In 2017, she was recruited on a team based out of Virginia that captured the gold medal in the over 50 division at the Huntsman Games in Utah.

This year, she was recruited on an over-50 team out of the North Texas Women’s Soccer Association. The team won the regional tournament held last month in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Hickman is one of two Georgians on the squad.

Hickman began her journey on the field as an 8th grader at Lithonia High School. Back then, 8th graders were incorporated into the school as freshmen.

Also back then, there were few opportunities for girls soccer.

So, Hickman played on the boys team until the next year.

“I played on the girls team 9th through 12th grade,” she said. “My se-

It didn’t stop there.

She played soccer for Georgia Tech from 1984-1988 where she graduated with a degree in industrial management.

Her love of the game didn’t stop after she began raising a family. There’s a joke on the Atlanta team, she said, that lists the players’ priorities: God, soccer, family and then everything else.

Hickman switched to goal keeper a number of years ago after injuries — broken bones and the like — convinced her that playing sweeper was a little too rough for a woman her age. She was mistaken, she said, because now, instead of sliding into other players, everyone slides into her.

But, her specialty keeps her in demand, and she loves the game.

“I have to juggle some times. I still wear my soccer uniform to church, going

straight from the service to my game,” she said.

It was true when raising a family, a son and daughter, both West Forsyth High graduates, and while pursuing her career as a CPA. The kids understood and grew into successes of their own.

Son Andrew Hickman, played three sports himself, graduated from Georgia State and is now working for Ernst Young as a consultant. Daughter Holly Hickman graduated from Kennesaw State and is a freelance social media marketer and owns her own company called HollyLolly, LLC. Allison’s husband, Michael, is a real estate agent with Keller Williams in Cumming.
