Officer use of force probed in woman’s arrest JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek Police arrested a woman for battery on a police officer June 22, after an officer punched the unarmed woman in the face.

Around 5:30, police received a 911 call from a restaurant on State Bridge Road reporting that a woman who was intoxicated threatened other employees, threatened to burn down the building and refused to leave after being fired.

Officer R. Bucki arrived on the scene and was directed by the manager to the suspect who was smoking behind the restaurant with an employee. The suspect, 25-year-old Jennifer Olga Sims of Alpharetta, was uncooperative when the office asked questions, the report said.

Bucki asked her to follow him to his vehicle and she initially followed but then stopped and refused to come farther.

The officer then informed her he would need to handcuff her.

She then put her wrists out as if to comply but then jumped away, according to police reports.

Traffic stop results in narcotics citation JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police cited a woman for possession of ecstasy, Vyvance and marijuana after she was stopped under suspicion of rolling through a stop sign June 17.

Police were patrolling Colony Glen Subdivision around 2:30 p.m. when an officer observed a blue Nissan SUV roll through the intersection of Colony Glen Drive and Royal Colony Court without coming to a stop.

The officer pulled over the driver, a 19-year-old from Alpharetta, and said she appeared nervous when questioned.

The officer then struck Sims in the mouth with a closed fist and she fell to the ground. He attempted to handcuff her, but she continued to struggle, and other restaurant employees had to help restrain her.

Once the suspect was in handcuffs, the officer tried to walk her to the police vehicle. She allegedly kneed the officer in the groin and resisted being placed in the backseat. According to the officer, she smelled of alcohol and was continuously making violent threats.

Sims was transported to the hospital and later to the Alpharetta jail. Her listed possessions did not include any weapons. She was charged with simple battery on a police officer, public intoxication and obstruction.

Public Information Officer Sgt. Seymour said there is an ongoing investigation into the incident, as is the case with any incident involving an officer’s use of force, and no further comment could be given until the investigation is complete.

The K-9 officer helped police locate drugs in the vehicle: 6.5 grams of suspected marijuana, an e-cigarette containing a liquid with 83.25 percent THC oil according to packaging and two pill bottles.

The suspect said the pills were 30 mg Vyvance, a prescription ADHD medication, and “Molly” or MDMA. The suspect was placed in handcuffs, taken to the police department for further questioning and then given a ride back to her home.

Suspected shoplifter arrested at Target JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested a man at the Target on State Bridge Road June 19 on charges of theft by shoplifting.

The security officer told police that the suspect entered the store around 8 p.m. carrying a Target plastic bag. He said the suspect went directly to the women’s swimwear section, put two women’s bathing suit tops worth $33 total in the bag and left the story without paying.

The security officer then confronted the suspect and detained him until police arrived. The Target officer gave police a copy of the recording and a written

statement. Police arrested the suspect, Anthony Columbo, 27, from Johns Creek.

Gwinnett man arrested for meth possession JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested a Gwinnett County man June 18 for possession of methamphetamine after they were summoned to the Kroger on Old Alabama Road.

Police received a call around 6:30 from a woman who said she saw a man enter a car, remove items, then walk away near the Kroger. Police went into the store and found a man who matched the physical and clothing description provide by the caller.

The suspect was uncooperative with police questioning. After repeated attempts to discover the man’s identity, police placed the suspect in handcuffs.

Searching the bag in the suspect’s possession, police found suspected methamphetamine and a glass pipe with residue from the drug.

Shortly after, a friend of the suspect arrived on the scene. She gave police the name of the suspect and said the car

Johns Creek Police Chief endorses body cameras Police Chief Ed Densmore has selected a vendor to bring body-worn cameras to law enforcement officers in Johns Creek.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police Chief Ed Densmore has selected a vendor to bring body-worn cameras to law enforcement officers in Johns Creek.

Densmore has asked the City Council to approve a contract that would bring body cameras, in-car cameras, interview room cameras and the database that stores the footage under one vendor, Axon Enterprise.

“I wanted one system across the board for ease of use, maintaince, everything,” Densmore said. “Axon was able to come forward and provide that.”

Axon is also the manufacturer of Tasers, and its body cameras are designed to begin recording whenever an officer takes out his or her Taser.

“When that Taser is drawn from the holster it’s going to activate the body camera,” Densmore said. “[Axon] is the only one out there that will do that. The Taser

is probably our number one less lethal device that we go to.”

The cameras also begin recording if they are within a certain distance of other cameras that are recording, if nearby police vehicle lights are turned on or if the officer manually turns the camera on.

When the camera begins actively recording, the last thirty seconds of footage can be saved. The camera only stops recording if the officer deliberately pushes a button for five seconds.

Densmore said he has spent three years researching body camera devices before he found a product he was confident in.

“When I looked at everything across the field this was by far the leading candidate,” he said.

While body cameras have been implemented across the country to increase police accountability and reduce officer complaints, Densmore said the main appeal of body cameras to him is providing evidence for investigators and courts and creating training opportunities for officers.

“In this day and age, everything is on video,” Densmore said. “So why wouldn’t we capture what happened from the officer’s standpoint rather than a 15-second clip from someone standing on the side of the road with their cell phone?”

Councilman Steve Broadbent raised a question about privacy, asking what if police were to go onto private property and the business or homeowner asked them to turn the camera off. Densmore said if the police were there on a call it would no longer be a private matter.

Alpharetta, Roswell, Sandy Springs, Gwinnett and Forsyth already have body-worn cameras on at least some law enforcement officers. Several of the surrounding agencies use Axon, Densmore said, which will facilitate coordination between departments.

Council considers changes to zoning ordinance

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Changes could be on the way for Johns Creek’s zoning ordinance, as the City Council works to align the regulations with the 2018 Comprehensive Plan.

Zoning ordinances are meant to work together with the long-term vision outlined in the comprehensive plan to inform decisions about future land use.

In Georgia, compliance with a comprehensive land use plan is one the six Steinberg criteria considered in any zoning case.

Last year, Johns Creek adopted its second comprehensive plan in its 11-year history. The plan is meant as a guide for the city for the next decade.

The 2018 plan reaffirmed a commitment to low-density, single-family-home subdivisions for the majority of the city’s footprint, while concentrating economic development in Technology Park.

It identified Tech Park and a few other smaller sites throughout the city as locales for mixed-used development, indicating Johns Creek will follow the walkable village trend that is catching on throughout the North Atlanta suburbs.

However, the comprehensive plan is toothless without coordination with zoning ordinances. The City Council named updating the ordinance a top priority for the Community Development department, behind stormwater infrastructure.

Community Development staff identified several new definitions and changes to the zoning ordinance for the council to consider.

For residential areas, the biggest proposed change is a new requirement to have open space in any residential development. The amount of required open space varies by the density of the development.

“We know that open space enhances the quality of life by providing recreation

opportunities for our residents,” Interim Community Development Director Kimberly Greer said. “It provides an opportunity for people to congregate.”

Open space is defined as community space with either active recreational uses, such as tennis courts or a swimming pool, or passive uses, such as trails, but does not include required buffers or detention ponds.

The comprehensive plan vision most in conflict with the current zoning ordinance is the goal to created walkable, mixed-use business hubs at specific locations within the city.

“It’s not letting this loose citywide,” Greer said. “But in those specific areas, if we want to actually encourage what you envisioned in your comp plan, you need to make sure the text in the zoning ordinance matches that.”

The first draft of the amendment also changes the requirements for revitalizing shopping centers and creates definitions and requirements for multi-use trails.

Any amendments to the city zoning ordinance faces a potentially lengthy journey before it can be adopted. First, the council must agree with the recommendations of the community development department or make their own changes.

Next, the amendment goes to the Planning Commission, where members can make their own recommendations and adjustments. Then, it goes back before council for a final decision.

This process began June 17 at a City Council meeting where council members, notably Stephanie Endres, gave their input on the first draft of an amendment.

Endres suggested changes to some definitions, areas where developers could be given less discretion, and eliminating some of the allowable uses in a mixed-use district.

The zoning ordinance amendment is expected to be discussed at the council’s next work session, July 8 at 5 p.m.

District to spend $9 million for renovations at Roswell, Centennial

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com Major renovations at Roswell and Centennial high schools are underway this summer with the long list of features and enhancements slated to be complete by the start of school in August 2021.

The nearly $9 million project will provide a much-needed facelift to both area high schools, as well as updates and additions to bring the schools up to the education specifications of newer high schools.

Black box theaters will be constructed at each school, along with new academic spaces to house each schools’ Career, Technical and Agricultural Education support areas.

At Roswell, the CTAE pathways include construction, cosmetology, video broadcasting – all of which will have new academic space. An addition is also being added to support the Junior ROTC program.

CTAE pathways at Centennial in line for new academic spaces include programs focused on public safety and video broadcasting.

The projects are part of Fulton Schools’ Capital Plan 2022 which lays

out the 5-year construction plans from 2017 through 2022 across the district.

The nearly $977 million plan is being funded through the proceeds from the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax renewed by voters in 2016.

Nearly every school and facility in Fulton Schools will be impacted through Capital Plan 2022, which also includes funding for technology and security enhancements.

Patrick Burke, chief operations officer for Fulton Schools, said Capital Plan 2022 contained a lot of high school renovations, focused primarily at the older high schools in the district.

“The renovations are of the typical type we usually see for systems that are at the end of their useful life [such as] heating and cooling systems, bathrooms, flooring, etc.,” he noted, during a meeting of the Fulton County Board of Education in June.

School planners also took a hard look at renovations that would go far in correcting potential deficiencies in academic areas at the schools, including adding space to support the CTAE pathways.

Students shine at art exhibit

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Arts Center’s newest exhibit, High Honors, features the talents of high schoolers from across three counties.

The summer show was open to students from Fulton, Forsyth and Gwinnett Counties. The show includes 52 pieces from eight schools.

This is the first time the Johns Creek Arts Center has held a show specifically for teenage artists, and given its success the staff hopes to make it annual event.

“We’re all about fostering a love of art in young people, and this is a great way to do it,” Arts Center Executive Director Stuart Miller said.

The contest was open to all mediums, including photography, graphite, painting, digital, ceramics and other sculpture.

Curator Althea Foster said the show features high-quality work with a unique, teenage perspective.

“It’s very accomplished work,” Foster said. “It’s a testament to the quality of the art programs in the area and the support from the parents.”

Johns Creek High Schooler Matthew Oh took home the top prize, a $1,000

scholarship, for the oil painting “Viscous Layers.” Jimin Suh and Erin Lee, both from Johns Creek High School, received honorable mentions.

For young artists looking at colleges and considering career choices, it can be a huge boost to be featured in a show, win a scholarship or sell some of their work, Foster said.

“It’s a great way to inspire students who are considering art school and show them what they can achieve,” Foster said. “It really is inspiring to see young people who are working hard to achieve their goals and to see what they’ll do next.”

Miller said the exhibit is also perfectly timed for younger students.

“With our summer show, we try to engage the campers who are here in the summer,” he said. “This is a great way to inspire them.”

In past years, the arts center has done shows with comic book art and children’s book illustrations, but featuring the work of teenagers engages young campers more directly, Miller said, by showing them what they can achieve in just a few years.

The High Honors exhibit will show at the Johns Creek Arts Center, at 6290 Abbotts Bridge Road Building 700, until Aug. 2.

Chamber shines light on healthcare industry

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce hosted its first Wellness Expo June 27.

With healthcare being the biggest employer in Johns Creek, the decision to host a health-focused expo was an easy one, said Chamber President Kent Davies.

“We want to have an impact on the community, and Johns Creek is centered around healthcare,” Davies said. “We have so many doctors in Johns Creek. We have more medical providers coming in because of Emory Johns Creek, and so we’re really becoming known for healthcare.”

The free event exposed the public to dozens of practitioners, holistic specialists, insurance providers, nutritionists and other businesses related to health and wellness. Vendors included three major hospitals in the area: Gwinnett Medical Center, Northside Hospital and Emory Johns Creek Hospital, as well as small businesses.

“The response from vendors was overwhelming,” Davies said. “We quickly sold out.”

At the event, visitors took advantage of free health screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure, glaucoma, spine and glucose.

There were also free educational sessions exploring topics ranging from cancer, essential oils, vaping, nutrition, sleep and financial preparedness for catastrophic illness.

Davies said he was pleased with the turnout for a first-time event and hopes the expo will grow next year.

“Hopefully it will become an annual event,” he said.

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Milton-based Orkin & Associates has purchased Stonewood Village, a 106,485-squarefoot shopping center at 670 North Main Street in Alpharetta. Newmark Knight Frank announced the sale June 13.

“Stonewood Village presented a rare opportunity for investors to capitalize on a well-positioned shopping center that offers significant value enhancement from the empty big box and outparcel development,” said Mark Joines, senior managing director with Newmark Knight Frank. “It was no surprise that the buyer, with a focus on long-term ownership, jumped on the chance to own the property.”

Orkin & Associates, through its development partner, Devin Properties, develops retail, residential and mixeduse properties, and provides full-service management to in-house assets through Orkin Asset Management.

Built in 1986, Stonewood Village had been marketed as providing an ideal value-add opportunity with flexible space options for grocers and junior anchors.

It lies within one of Metro Atlanta’s fastest growing suburban corridors. More than 137,000 people work within a fivemile radius of Stonewood Village, with average household incomes in the area exceeding $146,000.

Key tenants at Stonewood Village include Dover Saddlery, Anytime Fitness, Queen of Hearts Antiques and Pure Spa. More than 32,000 square feet of space is currently available for lease, including a vacant big box.

In a statement issued following the sale, Orkin said Stonewood Village presents a great opportunity for the company, and it looks forward to filling it with businesses the community will enjoy.

The transaction reflects continued investor demand for value-add shopping centers located in high-growth suburban areas and feature a healthy mix of service and necessity-based retailers, making them less vulnerable to e-commerce.

Joines said the north Atlanta market is ripe for retail, especially as a component within mixed-use development.

“Retail in the area is strong,” he said.

“There has not been the overdevelopment over the last 10 years that we saw leading up to the recession.”

Joines conceded there have been instances of retail headwinds.

“We’ve lost a number of big-box retailers out there, your Sports Authority, some of your office suppliers like Office Depot and Office Max, and of course Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us,” he said.

“But those have been back-filled pretty easily, especially in areas like Roswell, Alpharetta and Johns Creek, where the general outlook is strong; there’s a lot of growth.”

A lot of the development going on now, Joines said, is densification in older, more mature areas, like Alpharetta City Center, which includes office, retail and residential.

In other areas, new retail development is taking on a different look.

“Some of that backfill includes some new-age, non-traditional retailers, such as fitness clubs, discount-oriented tenants like Big Lots and Goodwill,” he said.

Alpharetta’s key economic indicators continue to trend upward. The city’s population has grown by approximately 15 percent over the last eight years, with nearly two-thirds of residents holding a bachelor’s degree. More than 5,000 companies are located within the city limits.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Appen Media Group, publishers of the Herald newspapers and the Dunwoody Crier, has named Patrick Fox managing editor. For the past several years, he has focused on government and business in Alpharetta and Roswell.

Fox came to the paper in 2014 after 25 years with the Atlanta JournalConstitution where he served as a designer, copy editor and reporter.

Before that, he spent four years as FOX a news editor at The Hutchinson News in Hutchinson, Kansas.

“Pat brings a level of expertise to our newsroom that few community newsrooms can claim,” Appen Publisher Hans Appen said. “We are proud and excited to have him at the helm.”

A graduate of Wichita State University, Fox began his career as a reporter for a small weekly newspaper in Marion, Kansas.

Inventories define line between buyers’ and sellers’ market A couple weeks ago I talked about the housing market being a little Jekyll and Hyde, with lower-priced houses being in a sellers’ market and higherpriced houses being more in a buyers’ Geoff smith Assurance Financial, market. That article gsmith@lendtheway.com was more me going off articles I’ve been reading and gut-feelings. This one is about hard data.

I turned to my friend Mitchell Palm with Smart Real Estate Data. Their company is based out of Atlanta and is one of the best resources for crunching local numbers, to the point of sometimes dialing those numbers down to specific neighborhoods. I asked him about my theory, and he didn’t waste two seconds before sending me data and graphs proving out that he had known for a while what I was just discovering.

Palm uses months of inventory to determine whether a market is a buyers’ market or a sellers’ market. Months of inventory is the estimated number of months it would take to sell all of the houses currently listed in a given market. He said six months of inventory is what experts consider a healthy market, and that is what he says is the dividing line between the two markets.

“We know that 81 percent of listing are under 6 months, or 81 percent of the homes for sale are considered to be in a sellers’ market,” he said. “Once you

reach beyond the $600,00 price-range the (inventory) levels rise exponentially.”

The healthy market seems to be in the $600,000 to $800,000 price-range for the metro area. In that range, there is about seven months of inventory.

But you start to go over that and those houses are sitting much longer. Houses listed over $1 million are sitting for almost a year, and those over $1.5 million are sitting for over a year and a half.

On the flip side, the lower you go in price, the number of months on the market shrinks rapidly. Anything under $300,000 has two months of inventory, and two months of inventory is considered very unhealthy. In that price-range, buyers are fighting for the same houses, which is driving prices up and exacerbating the problem.

There is a problem in Atlanta with what some call affordable housing. A significant percentage of the market wants to buy houses under $300,000.

But over the last eight years, land has been so expensive, that builders have not been able to afford to buy the land and build houses in that price range and still make a profit. So there hasn’t been a lot of inventory added to the market.

Now you have a lot of people fighting over the affordable market, and that is driving up prices on those homes, making them less affordable.

I live in Roswell and was eating at a restaurant. From the time we ordered our food to the time it arrived was 45 minutes.

The manager apologized and I asked him what the problem was. He said his turnover with chefs is so high because none

of them can afford to live in North Fulton and are having to drive an hour to get to work there. And it’s not worth it to them.

It’s really strange how these things play out in our day-to-day lives.

But inventory in those lower-priced markets is in trouble. If you are trying to buy a home priced from $100,000 to $200,000, there is only one month’s worth of supply. If two months is considered very unhealthy, one month is half of that.

Palm said closings were slightly down over the last year, and he said there were two reasons for this: “sky-rocketing housing prices and rising mortgage rates — both of which lead to lack of affordability,” he said.

That said, we’ve seen a dramatic decrease in rates over the last month shoving them back down just under 4 percent for a 30-year fixed mortgage, according to MortgageNewsDaily.

“The falling mortgage rates should be the saving grace for the busy summer buying season of 2019,” Palm said.

Atlanta magazine uses a database of top doctors compiled by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., an established healthcare research company based in New York, to assist in its annual effort. This year the publication honors 860 physicians.

Doctors are nominated for consideration through a nationwide survey and a peer nomination process open to licensed physicians in Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry and Rockdale counties. Castle Connolly’s physician-led team of researchers then select the top doctors through a screening process that includes an evaluation of educational and experience.

Micro-managing your employees has consequences Having worked with small business owners for over 40 years, I have seen both positive and negative ways in which they manage their employees. How are you managing dick jones your employees?

In many cases, small business owners feel they need to micromanage their employees because it is the only way to ensure that they are doing their jobs correctly. Micro-managing employees often includes telling your employees what to do, how to do it and when to do it. If you’ve been in the military, then this approach is well known. It’s called a military model, and it works really well in that environment.

Conversely, a military model in a small business most often is a “house of cards” for employees as it’s not a very fun environment to work in. A military model squashes creativity and an employee’s autonomy and is a complete impediment to high performing teams.

A few years ago, the baby boomer generation was surpassed by the millennial generation, which has a very low tolerance for this type of work environment. While micro-managing employees in the past may have worked, it’s not going to in the future.

Having the freedom to do your job and own your own performance is a much better environment to operate and grow your small business. If you’re a micro-managing small business owner, you’d better think twice about continuing this behavior.

Cooktop On the Wall. “We’re moving the cooktop to a wall location and creating magnificent tile focal points on many of our kitchens” says Remodeling Expo Center’s, John Hogan. “Moving the cooktop to the wall or moving the microwave from above the cooktop, each of these design strategies yields gorgeous kitchens.

Smart Storage. Sometimes enlarging the kitchen isn’t possible, or sometimes as a component of expanding the kitchen, smart storage options is always a component of the remodel. Spice racks, Keurig inserts, roll-out drawers and hidden appliance options are all surprisingly common features of 2019 kitchens.

Lighting. More light sources create less shadows and more comfortable ambient lighting feel. Remodeling Expo Center emphasizes the use of clear light, LED technology which reflects off counters and backsplash and contributes to truly gorgeous kitchens.

The Total Kitchen. Bringing all of these elements together is what makes truly gorgeous kitchens and they don’t need to be ultra expensive; they just need to be well planned. The more time you spend on planning, the better the kitchen will turn out.

Yield to the gentleman with 18 wheels It’s been a little over two weeks now that I should be dead.

Returning home late one night from Conyers on I-20, I’d just pulled into the left of two exit lanes feeding onto I-285. pat Fox To my right was my Editor pat@appenmediagroup.com wife. To her right was an 18-wheeler.

As we rounded the curve, probably traveling at around 50 mph, the truck suddenly crossed into my lane. I had already noticed the lane to my left was packed with speeding vehicles, so all I could do was brake and creep as far to the left as I dared. Things happened too quickly for me to reason that getting rear -ended by a speeding car would have probably been better than getting mashed underneath a semi.

Anyway, somehow, miraculously, the front edge of the trailer swept past within inches.

Whew!

Then, something terrifying happened.

I saw the back end of the trailer coming alongside, tilting onto its left bank of wheels and swerving even farther into our lane.

I had already calculated how close we came to being smashed by the front end.

This time, no need to calculate. It was a certainty.

All we could do is sit and watch the giant wheels churning closer.

Somehow, nothing happened. Not a scratch.

Keep in mind, this was not a close call — not from my perspective. You can’t drive around Atlanta and not experience a close call. They are almost routine. They happen. You tell your friends about it, then forget it.

This was different.

All visual signs indicated I was witnessing the end.

This was not a close call. This was inevitability carried out to the 20th decimal point.

I won’t go into the ethereal variables for our escape — a guardian angel, freak wind shear, interdimensional shift.

Maybe it was destiny, issuing a ruling that I should write a column about

the experience.

Milton student honored as Poet Laureate’s Prize finalist

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton High School sophomore Aanika Eragam has been honored as a Georgia Poet Laureate’s Prize finalist.

Gov. Brian Kemp and Georgia Poet Laureate Chelsea Rathburn, in collaboration with Georgia Council for the Arts recently announced the 2019 winner and finalists. Eragam is one of the four finalists.

“It was very validating to know that someone had read my poem, and it resonated with them,” Eragam said. “It was nice to know that someone understood it, because poetry can be so out there.”

The prize is awarded to a Georgia high school student for an original poem. Last year’s winner Dagmawit “Bessi” Adamu and the 2017 winner Max Morella are also from Milton High School.

“Reading the submissions to the Poet Laureate Prize, I was amazed by both the quality and variety of poems being written by students across the state,” Rathburn said. “It’s clear that Georgia’s young poets have much to say about their experiences, their communities and the issues that matter to them, and that they have teachers who are dedicated to the literary arts…

“What sets our prize winner and finalists apart is their awareness of what poetry can do over other forms of written expression. Their poems use surprising language, charged images and careful, expressive lines.”

Eragam, who has a background in the sciences, said she started exploring the humanities last year and was inspired to try a new form of writing when she entered the contest.

“I wanted to challenge myself and do something different,” she said. “[Poetry] is not a set way or pattern of writing.

The way you tell whatever it is you’re trying to say can be so impactful, just because you’re not in a mold. You don’t have to write in a certain way.”

Her poem “Coconut Promises” was inspired by a book she had recently read that featured a distant relationship between the main character and her mother.

“I see that a lot in media,” Eragam said. “I thought it would be very interesting to write a poem from that perspective, because I, personally, have never had a relationship like that. I wanted to see how I could portray a relationship that was more distant and the opposite of what I’m used to. I wanted to put myself into the mind of another person.”

She chose the coconut as a symbol for that distant relationship.

“In my culture, a coconut, when you crack it, if the inside is white and shining, that’s a good omen,” Eragam said. “If it’s bad and decayed, that’s a

Eragam, an avid reader, said she will write more poetry and wants to try other forms of writing, such as fiction.

“Poetry is a wonderful form of art and expression,” she said. “The inspiration has to hit you. I don’t know exactly where I’ll go with it, but I’d like to keep writing in the future.”

Before she left, Mother packed her promises in a coconut, told me not to break it till she was gone. So when she was, I cracked the hickory shell open, held its splintered pieces in my hands.

But I never found the awaited meat, ebony and cream, glistening, glimmering— no, only decaying flesh, charcoal and burnt, like her promises, which I’ve begun stashing in the coffee jar she kept in the kitchen.

It’s growing rather fast, my collection, of all the things she’s broken with each missed birthday, missed phone call, missed graduation, you see, my mother was always clumsy.

But she comes back like a tidal wave each time I want to forget her, shadow dancing in the fog of cigarette puffs, broken glass, abandoned car lots. She is there— lingering, loitering, behind every street sign, every lamppost, every crumbling home.

And it would be so easy if I could hate her so much it didn’t hurt each time I heard her name or love her so much it didn’t matter— but it does.

I am in limbo, and I cannot walk this tightrope knowing she will not be there to catch me if I fall.

And I know she cannot be caged, cannot be anchored to this family that is not a family anymore, just withering remains, decaying so slowly people think it’s just the flush of the season. I want to ask her if she remembers who I am, the soft syllables of my name, the color of my skin, my hair. I want to ask her because I know each valley of her body, more than I know the air I breathe.

And some days, I hide under her covers and inhale her memory, pale and haunting, minty, she smells like fresh rain and inebriated smog. I miss her like the Sun misses the Moon each night, the sand the sea. I miss her but I don’t want her back. I have no more pieces left for her to break.

What is a black box theater?

According to the TDF Theater Dictionary, a black box theater is just what the name implies: a bare square or rectangular room, painted black, with a movable seating area, a movable stage, and a flexible lighting system. The set-up allows a neutral setting to give the performers a wide range of design and staging choices.

The concept gained popularity during the 1960s when performance venues in storefronts, basements and other non-traditional areas became popular. From there, the black box theater concept moved to colleges and increasingly more high schools.

High schools in North Fulton which currently have black box theaters include Alpharetta, Milton, Cambridge and Johns Creek. All remaining high schools, with the exception of Independence, will have black box theaters by the end of 2022.

The academic renovations in Capital Plan 2022 first looked at high schools built prior to 2008, which includes Roswell and Centennial.

“These are the first [projects] out of the chute, but we will be coming back in the fall with [plans for] Chattahoochee and the rest after that,” said Burke.

Doug Cary, director of Capital Planning for Fulton Schools, noted Roswell and Centennial are similar building prototypes, but have variations in floorplans and layouts. Additionally, the CTAE programs at each school are different with unique requirements for spaces.

“How to renovate or [implement] new construction comes into play of course within the context of budget,” said Cary. “So it’s a balancing act. The existing conditions are unique which drives you to unique solutions.”

Katha Stuart, a member of the Fulton School Board representing Roswell, noted she was happy to see a black box theater included in the plans for both schools, but she expressed concern an outdoor green space/classroom was not included at Centennial.

“I didn’t see an outdoor area, but I know the [school] is landlocked so not a lot of room to expand,” she acknowledged.

Board member Katie Reeves of North Fulton encouraged Fulton Schools staff to make sure there is equity among all schools as new items are added, such as black box theaters and green space.

“As we are doing new construction and coming up with new education specifications, [the public] wants to know where their school is on the list [for that improvement],” said Reeves.

William Pastor, coordinator of Architecture and Engineering for Fulton Schools, explained when educational specifications change, that new information becomes part of the Facility Condition Assessment which is the baseline for future SPLOST programs.

“The new SPLOST program is created from information gathered in the Facility Condition Assessment including new design or ed spec items,” he noted.

Shoplifter takes valuables at Medlock Bridge stores JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are looking for a man suspected of shoplifting eyeglass frames from Vision Works on Medlock Bridge Road after taking food from the nearby Jason’s Deli.

An employee of Vision Works contacted police June 19 saying that around 6:20 p.m. a man, weighing about 400 pounds and standing about 5-foot 9, entered the store holding an ice cream cone and corn bread muffins.

The man engaged the employee in a conversation about buying prescription sunglasses. The employee went to the back of the store momentarily and returned to find a section of eyeglasses, eight frames total, missing.

There were no cameras in the store, but the food the suspect was eating led officers to the nearby Jason’s Deli. The manager showed police video footage of a man matching the description of the suspect walk to the back of the restaurant and leave two minutes later without going to the register.

The manager said it would have been possible for him to steal ice cream and muffins without going through the register.

Area graduates include 2019 National Merit scholars

More than 50 recent graduates of area high schools were named National Merit Scholars for 2019, receiving scholarship funds to use for their college education. Fewer than 1 percent of graduating seniors across the nation received National Merit distinction.

Cliff Jones, chief academic officer for Fulton County Schools, noted the achievements of these students highlight the success of the district’s focus on academics.

“We are extremely proud of our Fulton students who have achieved excellence and are being recognized through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation,” said Jones. “These students have proven themselves to be academically talented and nationally competitive.”

The scholarship awards were distributed in three rounds. The first awards in April were corporate-sponsored scholarships financed by corporations, company founda-

tions and other business organizations.

Of the 1,000 scholarships awarded in this round, 18 went to Fulton Schools’ students. Qualifying students were identified through exceptionally high scores on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The second group of winners, which included 15 Fulton Schools graduates, were awarded the Nation Merit Scholar distinction in May. The award includes a $2,500 cash scholarship to use at a college or university of their choice.

Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, tasked with reviewing academic records, standardized test scores, contributions and examples of leadership, a written essay and a recommendation by a high school official.

The third pool of 3,500 National Merit scholars were announced in June and included 18 Fulton graduates who received college-sponsored scholarships.

Officials of each sponsor college selected

their winners from among the previously announced finalists who plan to attend their institution.

These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Additional recipients of college-sponsored awards will be announced July 15, bringing the total number of collegesponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2019 competition to about 4,100.
