Man receives bill for $10,000 watch JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a card fraud incident which cost the victim $10,000.

The male victim told police he received an alert Jan. 24 from his credit card company in reference to a suspicious $10 charge. While discussing the charge, the representative found a fraudulent $10,000 online charge for a watch.

The representative told the man he would not be liable for the charge. But after the credit card company investigated the charge further, the man was told he would be billed the $10,000 because the package had been delivered to his address.

The man said he did not receive a package, but the mail company reported that it had been delivered.

He was advised to file a police report.

Woman reports fraud after changing homes JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman called police March 5 after she realized that someone had been trying to open several accounts using her personal information.

Thief removes deliveries from resident’s doorstep JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a March 4 incident in which an Amazon package and new credit card were reported stolen from a doorstep on Abbotts Well Drive.

The homeowner said he received photos from FedEx and Amazon showing the packages had been successfully delivered to the residence.

By the time police arrived, someone had already attempted to charge $7,000 to the missing credit card. The charge was ultimately declined because the card wasn’t activated.

There was no video of the incident.

Man refuses to comply with extortion threat JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A man called police March 7 after he received an email demanding $1,000 in an extortion money.

The email stated that spyware had been installed on the man’s computer and demanded that the man send the money in the form of Bitcoin to avoid having his personal information distributed online.

The email appeared like it came from the man’s work email.

The man called police instead of sending in the $1,000.

Suspect swindles cashier into giving him money JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are looking for a man connected to a March 4 larceny incident at the Walgreens on Kimball Bridge Road.

The man arrived at 9 p.m. and handed the cashier a box of candy and a $100 bill. While talking with the cashier, the man took the $100 bill back and said he wanted to pay with exact change.

The man continued to distract the cashier with small talk, and the cashier eventually gave the man the change he would have received if he had paid with the $100 bill.

The man left with the box of candy and an extra $95.

Woman discovers fraud after losing her wallet JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman called police March 5 after she discovered $1,400 in fraudulent charges on her debit card.

Two weeks earlier, the woman had lost her wallet and phone while attending a flea market in Decatur.

The fraudulent charges were made days later to an ATM in Tucker.

The woman was advised to report the incident to the Tucker and DeKalb police departments as they have jurisdiction.

Johns Creek amends cell technology ordinance in response to state bill

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council amended its ordinance governing small cell technology March 11 in anticipation of state legislation that would give greater leeway to telecom companies’ installation of equipment.

Small cell technology adds wireless bandwidth to existing cell towers and is a way to expand 5G coverage. Fifth-generation technology is rolling out across the country and is expected to be 10 to 100 times faster than the current LTE network.

The city regulates 5G deployment through right of way encroachment permits, which allow companies to install small cell technology in public space along roads.

Last fall, the Federal Communication Commission issued a ruling limiting municipalities’ ability to regulate small cell technology in an effort to encourage the expansion of 5G networks.

In December, Johns Creek updated its small cell ordinance in an attempt to take back some local control. The ordinance required cell providers to enter into a master right of way agreement with the city; set spacing, size and design standards for small cell technology and encouraged cell providers to co-locate their technology equipment, reducing the number of poles needed.

In February, both houses of the Georgia General Assembly passed legislation that, if signed into law, will make much of Johns Creek’s December ordinance unenforceable.

“I don’t like this legislation,” said

Mayor Mike Bodker. “I didn’t like this legislation when it was brought up last year, and I don’t like it now. But I think we’ve effectively done what we needed to do regardless.”

The legislation is moving through the 2019 General Assembly. House Bill 184 passed with only one dissenting vote.

Senate Bill 66 passed unanimously.

The legislation is backed by telecom companies and the Georgia Municipal Association. Proponents say the bill will help economic development in rural areas and is a compromise between what the cities and telecom companies want.

“A compromise never makes everybody happy,” State Rep. Angelika Kausche said at a recent town hall. “And I know that the folks here on the Johns Creek City Council are not super excited about this bill, but that was the compromise that was negotiated.”

The state legislation would prohibit mandatory master agreements, so Johns Creek updated its ordinance to make the agreement voluntary. The voluntary agreement keeps many of the previous restrictions, such as stealthy designs and smaller equipment, and reduced fees and review times to incentivize entering into the agreement.

“If the provider does not voluntarily sign the agreement, we still have provisions within the ordinance that regulate how the deployments looks, so they’re consistent with the aesthetics of surrounding poles,” Assistant City Attorney Ronald Bennett said.

The city’s revised ordinance also incentivized collocation to a greater extent than the state legislation.

After approving the new ordinance, the council approved a voluntary agreement with AT&T.

Palestinian map displayed at school event draws criticism

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A celebration of the community’s multiculturalism sparked controversy this month when a map erasing the state of Israel was displayed at Autrey Mill Middle School.

Autrey Mill’s multicultural night is an annual event designed to educate and celebrate the school’s diversity. Families sign up to bring artifacts and food representing their culture. On March 7, 500 people attended and 15 countries were represented.

the Mediterranean Sea, erasing the modern state of Israel. Photos of the map quickly spread on social media, drawing condemnation.

Principal J. E. Trey Martin sent an email to parents the next day.

“I am extremely disappointed and disgusted with the individuals who presented an insensitive political and geographic representation,” he stated. “This display does not represent our school culture which is one that values inclusion and unity. Let me be clear, we condemn this attempt to use our Multicultural Night for one’s own political or religious agenda.”

Martin said he would be working with district leaders to investigate the incident and to hold those responsible accountable. He also said he was discussing ways to educate the adult community.

Fulton County Schools released its own statement: “This event is hosted by families and staff with the intent of celebrating different cultures and nationalities,” the statement reads. “We condemn the negative and extreme political agendas these symbols represent.

We are investigating this incident, and will take all necessary actions to find the individual(s) responsible and hold them accountable.”

March 12, the Georgia branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights advocacy group, held a press conference saying that the school district had misled the public about the incident and that Muslim students were bullied as a result.

CAIR Georgia Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell pointed out that the map displayed was a historically accurate map of British Mandatory Palestine, the geopolitical entity in the region between 1920 and 1948. Some students’ grandparents lived in Palestine during this time, he said.

“It was not an act of political commentary,” Mitchell said. “It was part of their family history; it was a part of Palestinian history. Recognizing Palestinian history is not an act of bigotry. Neither is recognizing Israeli history.”

He also claimed the school approved the display prior to the event, that the map had been displayed at last year’s event and that the principal visited the

“Within 12 hours, instead of gathering more facts, the school issued a public statement to the media,” Mitchell said. “That action on the part of the school turned what was a simple misunderstanding into a public spectacle.”

Local leaders in the Jewish community condemned the display and called for continued opposition to antiSemitism.

Community kicks off fundraiser for the Wall that Heals

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. —Local leaders are teaming up to raise money for the installation of a Vietnam War memorial, the Wall that Heals.

Leadership Johns Creek, the Chamber of Commerce and the Johns Creek Veterans Association held a fundraising kickoff March 8 at the Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk in Newtown Park.

The Wall that Heals is a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans memorial in Washington. The chevron-shaped wall bears the names of 58,000 service members who died or were missing in action during the conflict.

Johns Creek hosted the wall in the spring of 2017, when more than 8,500 people visited. Last year, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund announced that Johns Creek will become the permanent home of the half-scale memorial.

The retired replica had been on the road for more than 10 years and toured more than 250 cities across America.

Johns Creek was chosen thank s to the support of the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau and a donation from local residents and former City Council-

woman Cori and John Davenport.

The Wall That Heals will be installed at the Veterans Memorial Walk. The 4-acre memorial features an entrance plaza, a gazebo, a ceremonial bell, a fountain and 10 black granite monuments, recognizing every U.S. conflict since World War I as well as women in service, Purple Heart recipients, prisoners of war and service members missing in action.

The Wall That Heals will be installed near the gazebo. Community groups are raising money to fund the installation, lighting and landscaping around the wall. The City Council and convention bureau have already committed $25,000 to this end.

Fundraising efforts are being led by a team that includes Abbe Poline with Renasant Bank, Amit Jaipaul with Tech Mahindra Americas, Laura Houston with Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce, Ginger McElhannon with SAIA and Dr. Wes Bailey.

Historical society hears tales of trail trees

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — If you ever come a across a tree with a trunk bent in a distinct, 90 degree angle, you may be seeing a piece of history.

Trail trees, trunks bent by human intervention to resemble a four or zigzag, are believed to have been used by Native Americans to mark a massive network of pre-Columbian trails.

March 6, the Johns Creek Historical Society heard a talk from Don Wells about his research on trail trees at the Summerour House at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve.

Wells, a retired Navy captain and civil engineer, is the founder of Mountain Stewards, a nonprofit in North Georgia.

He was one of the founders of the National Trail Tree Project and co-authored a book, “Mystery of the Trees.”

He travels about 10,000 miles a year across the country to research the subject. Georgia was the home of Cherokee and Cheek Indians. Possible trail trees can be found at F. D. Roosevelt State Park, Wells said.

The study of trail trees is not simple. Trees can be bent by a number of natural causes — a lightning strike, for example, or another tree falling on top of it — making it difficult to distinguish genuine trail matters.

Further complicating the matter, in spite of archeological evidence to the contrary, some have argued that Native American civilizations were not advanced enough to route trails. Wells said he al-

ways has to be on the lookout for racial biases in his research.

“It’s very difficult to start to get data on Indian things, because there’s a lot of misinformation,” Wells said. “There’s a lot of bad stuff out there, and if you don’t watch what you’re doing you can get off into some bad things.”

There remains debate over what purpose these trees served. Some think they marked trails, rivers and boundaries, while others believe they carried religious significance or were burial sites.

Wells has worked with Cheek and Cherokee natives to try and better understand the trees’ cultural significance. “[The settlers] killed a lot of people, and we lost a lot of knowledge,” Wells said. “The language is gone, and if you lose the language you lose the customs, you lose the heritage, you lose the stories, you lose everything,” Despite the challenges, Wells is committed to studying and preserving the history of trail trees.

“You can discover history that’s missing by digging into some of this stuff, and we have fun doing it,” Wells said.

Glenhurst resident starts neighborhood running club

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — For one person to run 50,000 miles in a year would be practically impossible. But can a neighborhood do it?

That’s the goal of Atul Maskar, founder of Glenhurst Miles. His goal is to get as many people in his subdivision walking, running, biking and swimming.

Maskar was inspired by his children, who participate in the Altanta Kids Triathlon each year.

“We’d go to a bunch of parks around the Chattahoochee, around the Greenway by YMCA,” he said. “We’d spend 25 minutes just getting to those places.”

Maskar knew there were other teens and parents running, but each in isolation. He said he wanted a way to bring the community together and to encourage more people get active.

“A lot of people came to me and said ‘I do this, irrespective of this program, but I would love to go out and meet, which I’m not really doing,’” he said.

The home owners association was fully on board, he said, and so Glenhurst Miles was born. The idea is that the program is free and flexible, so each household can participate as much as they want or have time for.

If someone wants to walk a mile around the neighborhood a few nights a week, Maskar just asks that they log the miles on the community page. If they

want to do more, they can join group runs or volunteer to lead a biking or swimming excursion.

“There’s no obligation,” Maskar said.

“If you want to quit one day, go ahead. If you want to join and just walk, walk.”

Using the website Strava, Maskar created routes of different distances around the neighborhood. Stava let’s runners preview the route and gives an idea of how steep it will be.

The website also has a way to log miles. Maskar’s goal is for the group to collectively run, walk, bike and swim 50,000 miles by October 31. With 166 households, they’ll make it if each person puts in a few miles a week.

“It is very important to be active,” he said. “Once the parents are active, the kids become active. When parents slack off, the kids see that.”

Maskar has seen that the program is already bringing neighbors closer together. He hopes the idea will catch on to other neighborhoods and promote healthy lifestyles across the community.

“If each community starts doing their own program, this could eventually become Johns Creek Miles,” he said.

“I think that this will allow us to bring our community together and make our voices louder to our leaders.”

Photography exhibit opens at Johns Creek Arts Center

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Arts Center will be displaying a juried show by the Atlanta Photography Group entitled “Southern Currents.”

Featuring 51 works by more than 25 artists, the show, which runs through April 20, explores Southern spaces, people, customs and food.

“They wanted to a show that basically depicts different aspects of Southern culture,” Curator Althea Foster said. “Most of the artists are Southern.

There’s a lot of different kinds of art in the show. There’s some figurative work, some landscapes, some nature photography.”

Though the show is made up exclusively of photography, there is still plenty of diversity in the work, Foster said.

“I think that, particularly for most Southerners, the South evokes a place that is different from other parts of the country,” Foster said. “I really think that you get a sense of the unique character

of Georgia in this exhibit. Its different aspects of Georgia — there’s urban pictures; there’s rural pictures.”

The show was juried by Atlanta Photography Group Executive Director Judith Pishnery and Beth Lilly. Established in 1987, APG is a nonprofit dedicated to providing opportunities for photographers to further their artistic development and to support the fine arts.

Pishnery has am MA and MFA from Savanah College of Arts and Design, and she has served on the board of the America Photographic Artists in Atlanta and the Atlanta Celebrates Photograph festival.

Lilly has had her work displayed in the High Museum of Art, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art and other regional museums. She earned an MFA in photography from Georgia State University.

Foster said the Johns Creek Arts Center works with other arts groups to host a medium-specific show about once a year.

“People from Atlanta come up here to see the show; that increases our audience,” she said. “And people from

The things you learn from books So, I’ve finally started reading again — at least some. I seem to go in cycles where I find lots of books that interest me that I am able to digest. Then there are those times when my attention span is two Ray appen minutes or less — at Publisher ray@appenmediagroup.com best. I don’t know what that’s all about.

I am reading a book called “Being Mortal” by Atul Gawande. I read one of his other books called “The Check List Manifesto” which was all about how Gawande implemented on a small scale the use of checklists in hospital operating rooms which reduced the rate of complications and ultimately cut the amount of time patients stayed in intensive care by half. His checklist strategy applies to almost all walks of life, from the checklists all commercial pilots use, to checklists that engineers use when building 60-story skyscrapers. In an increasingly complex world, the use of fundamental checklists help people avoid simple errors in complex systems. The Checklist Manifesto is amazing and a worthwhile read.

I just started “Being Mortal,” and he

already has hooked me again. The book is about aging, and it looks as though he will approach the topic with the same fascinating insight and intuition as he used in the checklist book.

The first gem I stumbled across was when he was recounting spending time on the floor below his surgical floor at his hospital — the Geriatrics wing — a floor he had never set foot on. He ended up spending the day making rounds with the chief geriatrician, Juergen Bludau. After examining one 85-year-old patient with a litany of potentially serious problems, Gawande was startled to note that while Bludau did pay attention to those issues, what he spent the most time on was examining the condition of the patient’s feet. Bludau explained to Gawnde that one of the most serious dangers to seniors is falling and breaking their hip. When that happens, Bludau said, 40 percent end up in a nursing home and another 20 percent are never able to walk again.

He went on to explain that the three most important risk factors related to falling were poor balance, taking more than four prescription medications and muscle weakness. His patient, he said,

Books: Continued from Page 10 had two of the three risk factors. When she first walked into the exam room he had noticed her “splay-footed” gait.

Examination of her feet revealed that “her feet were swollen, her toenails were unclipped (which suggested that she had limited flexibility), there were sores between the toes, and the balls of her feet had thick, rounded calluses.”

Also, he noted that she was on five medications. When she got up from her chair, he had noted that she had not used her arms to push herself up, which, he said, indicated that her muscles were still sound.

In the end, Bludau prescribed monthly visits to a podiatrist to improve the condition of her feet. He saw no medications that could be eliminated, but he did change her diuretic to a blood pressure medicine, which would eliminate the risk of dehydration (he had noted that her tongue was gone dry when he had examined it indicating dehydration). Dehydration could cause dizziness, which, in turn increased her chances of falling.

I am not sure why I find this so interesting, but I suspect that it has something to do with the fact that it demonstrated the fallacy of an assumption and reminded me not to be too quick to judge

I just finished a long chapter on Facebook which discussed the election of 2016 and the role that Facebook played in releasing data on more than 80 million users to a company named Cambridge Analytica, which was owned by the Mercer family. The chapter went on to discuss the use of data in political campaigns and the startling degree to which data from Facebook could be used to identify individual preferences and predict future behavior — based in large part on research by psychologist Michael Kosinski in the emerging field of “psychometrics.” The research apparently gave Kosinski the ability to make “any number of intelligent predictions about someone about whom he possessed (only) a sliver of seemingly irrelevant information.”

The book stated that, according to Zurich’s Das Magazine, “with a mere ten ‘likes’ as input, his model could appraise a person’s character better than a co-worker. With seventy, it could ‘know’ a subject better than a friend; and with 150 likes, better than their parents.

With 300 likes, Kosinski’t machine could T:10” predict a subject’s behavior better than

data by, well, by just about anybody. I can’t wait to finish this chapter. It’s depressing. I suppose though, it is balanced out by the positive experience I have found reading Gawnde’s book.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A community for active adults, Evoq Town Flats at Johns Creek, is being built near the intersection of Bell Road and Medlock Bridge.

Approved by City Council in June 2016, the facility will include 140 living units, a lounge, bakery fitness center and other community amenities. The one- and two-bedroom flats will be available to residents 55 and older, with secondary residents as young as 45.

Alpharetta Presbyterian Church Dayschool to offer two new summer camps Established in 1990, Alpharetta Presbyterian Church (APC) Dayschool has been a beloved and respected part of the Alpharetta community for almost 30 years and is a member of the Georgia Preschool Association.

Police department sponsors prescription drug take back day JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — On April 27, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a United States federal law enforcement agency tasked with combating drug smuggling and distribution, the Johns Creek Police Department (JCPD) will be sponsoring the “National Take Back” initiative event.

The initiative allows for anyone with unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medicines to be turned in for safe disposal to the JCPD stationed in the parking lot of Target, 5950 State Bridge Road in Johns Creek.

The “National Take Back” event was incorporated in Johns Creek due to the increase of heroin abuse in the area. The event is designed to reduce prescription drug abuse, reduce the risk of prescription drugs entering the water and to help people comply with the law re disposal of prescription drugs. Finding personal fulfillment through self-less action

By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor I must admit I am somewhat addicted to being useful. Some of us gain our identity from our title or what we own, or our ethnic or religious origins, but some Chadwick of us, like me, identify with being able to constructively influence the present, and thereby the future.

It is still enlightened self-interest I guess, but when it reaches beyond the bounds of what affects us, it brings power to others. I was fortunate to be born into a loving middle-class home. So, I believe people who have been nurtured and taught to share possess all of the tools needed to be philanthropic. But, frequently people see a middle-class income as incompatible with real giving or the ability to make a difference.

Think of this: If 1,000 people each gave one dollar a week for a year, at the end of the year, no one has spent more than $52 but there is now $52,000 to be spent for good!

The benefit is even larger if those

same thousand people chose to donate in a match campaign like the program at BurgerFi restaurant on Windward, where Ron Altman shares the work of the charities suggested by his customers on a big screen every month. Then, he then matches their gifts to those charities, essentially doubling the amount. When using these great programs, $52,000 becomes $104,000. I would call that influential!

When we join forces, even huge problems can be humbled. What shapes your personal perception of what is possible?

What biases make you shake your head instead of joining in to make the change want to see? We all have something to leverage on behalf of others, resources like time, money, wisdom, construction skills, even the ability to really listen. If you can give a dollar or an hour a week, you can join your neighbors in quietly changing the world.

Civic commitment doesn’t mean having to run for public office, it means deliberately working toward betterment where you see lack. Complaining serves to clarify what needs to be done, but only a motivated, constructive, civil society can choose and promote general prosperity instead.

Social isolation is what fragments our communities. Right now it is a natural consequence of disconnection — the automated ways we now communicate, shop, learn and socialize. How do you interpret your own value as a human being? And how do you value and respect others?

In the recent Matt Damon movie, “Downsizing,” Damon starts out as a marginally successful, nice person trying to capture enough trappings of wealth to satisfy his self-absorbed wife and feel truly upper class. But, in the end, he learns that it is only in his service to others that he really feels his worth; and he becomes rich without any proof at all. Sadly, most viewers missed the point.

Many adult players of the avatar game, The Sims, spend more than 10 hours a day online in this artificial world, connecting to other pretend people. It is a choice they make because they know what to expect there. It feels safe.

Suicide rates are up, overdoses are now rampant; maybe caring that this is true is a start. It doesn’t matter what it is you have passion for; there are other people who agree with you. Dog rescue, disabled children, literacy, sobriety, mental health, childhood cancer, early educa-

“Having a display of Palestinian culture, foods and history is not itself an attack on Israel or Jews,” Bernstein said in an online statement. “Having a map that wipes out Israel, only displays political and antagonistic images is. I am grateful for the principal’s strong

message that this is unacceptable.”

Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker noted there is an ongoing investigation into the incident, suggesting it was probably perpetrated by adults “who weren’t acting like adults.”

“I will say categorically that the use of a middle school event to further an agenda, which also includes antiSemitism which you could call a form of hatred – and it wouldn’t matter if it was anti-Semitism or some other group that was impacted – seems entirely wrong to me,” he said.
