JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman contacted police Feb. 10 after she followed but ultimately lost a man suspected of stealing her purse from her car.

The woman reported she had been standing near the Mt. Pisgah athletic complex when she noticed a driver acting suspiciously near her car. When she entered her car, the woman saw her purse was missing.

Teenager loses hundreds to online business deal JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek teenager, 17, contacted police after he realized he had been scammed out of nearly $1,000 by someone he met on Instagram.

The teenager said he had met a woman on Instagram who said he could make money by buying into a business she was involved with. She proposed he grant her access to his bank account, and she would deposit money after withdrawing an initial investment.

The teenager agreed to the deal and met with a man Feb. 7 at Newtown Park to provide his debit card.

Shortly after handing over his debit card, the teenager noticed several withdrawals from his bank account as well as a $1,000 check deposit. A few days later, however, the teenager’s bank said the check wasn’t valid and canceled the transaction.

The teenager was unable to contact the woman again.

Fraudulent transactions cost woman thousands JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Duluth woman reported Feb. 13 that she had discovered $4,600 worth of fraudulent checks drawn on her account.

The woman followed the suspect in her car and was later knocked down when she got out of her car in an attempt to open the suspect’s car door at an intersection.

The manager of the athletic complex provided police with security footage that showed the suspect get out of his car and enter the woman’s car through an unlocked door.

The woman said she had been balancing her checkbook that day when she realized the numbers weren’t adding up correctly. After some investigating, the woman found several fraudulent checks that included her forged signature.

The woman closed her bank account before contacting police.

Burglar takes cash, jewelry in residential break-in JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a Feb. 13 home burglary on Carters Grove Trail.

One of the homeowners entered the house that afternoon and became suspicious when she noticed the inner garage door, which is usually left unlocked, was locked. When she entered with her husband, the two saw the home had been ransacked and the back, glass door was broken.

Missing items included checkbooks, $1,600 in cash and a $6,500 watch.

Bank alerts woman to fraudulent checks JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Brookhaven woman contacted police Feb. 14 after her bank informed her about two fraudulent checks.

The woman received the call from her bank the previous day asking about a suspicious check. She informed the bank representative that it was fraudulent, and the check was denied.

Later that day, however, the woman learned that a fraudulent $3,700 check had been cashed.

The woman said she had recently written two large checks for some construction work for her business.

Woman’s identity stolen, used to open accounts JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a complaint from a Johns Creek woman that her personal information had been stolen and used to open several bank accounts.

The woman said someone had stolen her Social Security information in September and used it to open several bank accounts in her name.

Some of the bank accounts were opened while she was a DeKalb County resident, and the fraud continued after she moved to Johns Creek recently.

Later on, the woman learned that one of the bank accounts had over $2,200 in withdrawals. A bank representative told her to file a police report.

Wanted man arrested during traffic stop JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested a man Feb. 14 after officers recognized him as a person wanted for selling cocaine.

Police stopped the man’s car that evening after they noticed his tag light was out. While talking to the man, police received an alert that he had multiple active warrants out of Gwinnett County for drug related offenses.

Police arrested the man, 23-year-old Unrickya Sharpe of Atlanta, without incident on warrant.

Johns Creek signs on to McGinnis Ferry widening

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek approved an agreement with Alpharetta and Forsyth County that advances plans to widen McGinnis Ferry Road, a popular east-west commuter route.

The vote allows all three cities to begin the right-of-way acquisition phase.

The project, estimated at between $51 and $63 million, calls for adding a lane in each direction for a 4.7-mile stretch. One of the busiest east-west routes north of Old Milton Parkway and State Bridge Road, McGinnis Ferry Road lies on the county border.

According to the three-way agreement, the project will be broken up into phases. Johns Creek and Alpharetta will commit $5.9 million, while Forsyth County will pay $18 million. State funds add another $10 million in funding,

leaving the project still at least $20 million short of funds.

The scope of the project runs from Sargent Road in Johns Creek west to Union Hill Road in Alpharetta. Each city shares about 2.3 miles of the roadway with Forsyth County.

The current agreement covers only the first phase of the shared project, focusing on two segments: one about a third of a mile from Union Hill Road east to and including the Big Creek Bridge in Alpharetta, and the other from Seven Oaks Parkway east to Sargent Road in Johns Creek, a distance of about threequarters of a mile.

Widening of the stretch between Big Creek to Seven Oaks Parkway is not the focus of the current agreement.

However, if money is still available after costs for the first two segments are completed, widening work could continue beyond the initial focus, according

The latest version is in sharp contrast to an earlier proposal Forsyth County floated last October — a proposal Alpharetta Mayor Jim Gilvin said wasn’t “going anywhere.” The earlier proposal would have allowed Forsyth County to move on right of way acquisition within the two cities.

It also asked for $9 million from each city.

The latest proposal, drafted in

coordination between representatives from the two cities and Forsyth County, leaves property acquisition squarely in the hands of each jurisdiction and lowers the ask from each city by about $3 million.

One sticking point remains. Even with all three in agreement, the road project is still underfunded to the tune of between $10 million and $21 million.

Some officials are hopeful the state or Atlanta Regional Commission will help fill that gap.

Mayor Mike Bodker said that Johns Creek was on track to run under budget on other transportation sales tax (TSPLOST) projects, which could help the city cover its share of the funds. One Johns Creek Council member, Lenny Zaprowski, voted against the agreement at the Feb. 10 meeting because of the lingering questions about funding the remainder of the project.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Public Works Department is seeking public input into widening Jones Bridge Road between State Bridge Road and Waters Road.

The city held a public input meeting Feb. 20, where public works personnel heard a wide range of opinions from those strongly in favor of the project to some strongly opposed, and everything in between.

“Some people want three lanes; some want five,” City Councilman Lenny Zaprowski said. “This gives us an opportunity to start having those conversations.”

Several residents had questions about how the project will impact Dolvin Elementary School. The city is in talks with the school district to relocate the driveway on Jones Bridge, according to Assistant City Manager Kimberly Greer.

By moving the driveway farther away from the Buice Road intersection, the goal is to improve flow during pick-up and drop-off times, reducing congestion for both school families and commuters.

Another decision the city will have to make is where to put sidewalks and how wide to make them. Plans presented at the meeting showed 10-foot sidewalks along the southeast side of the road and 5-foot sidewalks on the northwest side.

In the past, the council has prioritized building sidewalks, especially near schools, to promote alternative modes of transportation. However, some residents said they would rather see narrower

sidewalks, or a sidewalk only on one side of the road, to reduce property acquisitions.

The Johns Bridge widening is funded by the transportation sales tax, or TSPLOST. While TSPLOST has generally been a divisive topic for the Johns Creek City Council, the Jones Bridge widening has a particularly tumultuous history.

In November 2018, the council voted to study multiple options for improving Jones Bridge. Those options included widening the road from two to four lanes — the recommendation of the Public

Works Department — a three-lane road with a continuous center turn lane or adding and extending turn lanes at neighborhood entrances.

However, Mayor Mike Bodker vetoed that plan, and by one vote the council failed to override the mayor’s veto. The mayor’s stance, based on the advice of the city attorney and a courtesy review by the Georgia Attorney General’s Office, was that the city could not deviate from the plans the public saw in advance of the TSPLOST referendum.

Because those plans specified Jones Bridge would be widened to four lanes, studying other options would just be a waste of money, Bodker said.

The project was tabled until July

2019, when the council agreed to study a compromise: widen the pavement to four lanes but stripe the road to three lanes for the immediate future.

Zaprowski said the council is trying to balance the long-term needs of the area against the concerns of residents along Jones Bridge who don’t want to see the road become a major highway.

In December 2019, the council received the findings of a traffic study, which looked at Jones Bridge in three segments.

From Morton Road to Buice Road is currently over capacity, the study found.

With a three-lane widening, the road was predicted to reach capacity in 2023, and with a five-lane widening by 2043.

For State Bridge Road to Morton and from Buice to Waters, the segments were not expected to reach capacity until 2026 and 2025, respectively. A threelane widening would not change that capacity point, the study found. With five lanes, those segments of the road would not reach capacity between now and 2043, the study predicted.

After reviewing the study, the council agreed to move forward with public input as well as an interim improvement: converting the right-turn lane on Jones Bridge at Waters Road to an additional southbound through lane.

South of the intersection, Jones Bridge has two southbound travel lanes.

By removing the concrete island currently at the intersection, the city could improve travel times, the study found.

The city recently completed a similar project on southbound Medlock Bridge Road at State Bridge Road.

Sister of ‘Unknown Soldier’ recalls family’s effort to bring him home

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — For 14 years, Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Blassie was buried at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

Thanks to DNA evidence and the unwavering perseverance of his family, Blassie was identified and reburied in 1998. His sister, Patricia Blassie shared the family’s story with the Dunwoody-based World War II Roundtable on Feb. 20.

Patricia enlisted in the Air Force just a few years after Michael died in South Vietnam. Because of money and expectations for women at the time, she said she never thought she would go to college until a military recruiter expanded her vision of her future.

“My mother was very upset,” She said. “My father didn’t think I would make it through basic training.”

Contrary to her father’s expectations, Patricia Blassie served in the Air Force for 37 years and rose to the rank of colonel.

The oldest of five, Michael Blassie graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1970. In May 1972, while flying his 132nd mission, Michael’s plane was shot down about 60 miles north of Saigon.

His family was notified that he was shot by ground enemy fire and likely died before the aircraft crashed. Rescue teams were unable to find his body at that time. Patricia said her family was devastated.

About five months later, a South Vietnamese patrol found partial skeletal remains in the area of the crash. They also found an ID card, dog tags and a wallet identifying Michael Blassie. His family was not informed.

The remains were transferred to the Saigon Mortuary. At some point, Blassie’s ID card and some of the artifacts that were recovered with the remains were lost. Later, the remains were reclassified “X-26” after bone analysis estimated the age and height of the remains did

Johns Creek Symphony, Chattahoochee High team up for Russian music concert

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Perhaps the biggest orchestra ever assembled in Johns Creek is set to perform a concert of equally grand music on Saturday, March 28.

The Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra and Chattahoochee High School’s fine arts program will perform together for the first time in “A Night in Russia.”

The concert will feature iconic musical masterpieces like Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 2” and Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain.” The concert will feature works byMussorgsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov, part of the “The Mighty Five” Russian composers known for defining the country’s distinctive sound in the late 1800s.

“To my ears, you could listen to 16 bars of any of those compositions and say ‘Oh, this is late 19th century Russian music,’” said Wayne Baughman, Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra Music director. “It’s just got that sound.”

You don’t need a maestro’s ears to appreciate the concert, however. The bombastic arrangements of these Russian composers performed live will win over the most classical-musical skeptical, Baughman said.

“It’s a big concert,” he said. “All the

music that we’re playing was orchestrated for a large, full symphonic orchestra, which is why the Johns Creek Symphony all by itself, with between 45 and 55 musicians, would not do justice to this music.”

Thankfully, the local high schools have exceptional instrumental music programs, Baughman said. With the addition of about 70 Chattahoochee students, the ensemble will include approximately 120 musicians, making it likely the largest symphony orchestra to ever perform in the city, Baughman said.

“You don’t have to be an expert of music history,” Baughman said. “You don’t even have to know who RimskyKorsakov was. If somebody likes a big symphonic sound, this is the concert for them. Even if you don’t know that you like it, if you come to this concert, I can guarantee that you’ll leave wanting to hear more.”

The concert will be conducted by Baughman and Chattahoochee teachers Nicholas Garofalo and Lori Buonamici.

Performances will be at Johns Creek United Methodist Church at 1180 Medlock Bridge Road.

Northview student uses dance to bring awareness to mental illness

By ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Ashna Cheemakurthy, a 16 year-old junior at Northview High School, has been tackling the art of dance for most of her life. At age 5, she stepped into her first dance class and began training in the Indian classical dance form known as Kuchipudi that reflects her family heritage. It was the following year that she fell in love with dance and decided to pursue the art form after her first stage performance.

Within a few years, Cheemakurthy began to learn modern and hip hop dance at the Royal Dance Academy while simultaneously teaching herself Bollywood dance. It was upon realizing her potential that she decided to use her experience in competition.

“My favorite dance style of all time would have to be Kuchipudi,” Cheemakurthy said. “The dance form itself originated very close to my grandparents’ village in India, so I’ve always had a deeper connection with the messages and stories behind each dance. Getting on the stage is always a nerve-wracking experience every time even now. But something about having all eyes on you is so empowering.”

Since she began competing, Chee-

makurthy has placed first overall in Bravo’s regional dance competition and third overall in their national competition. She kicked off 2020 by competing in a five-day international reality television show, “International Indian Icon,” where she placed first overall after many rigorous rounds of competition. It was during this time that she realized that dance was not only a form of expression but a method of coping with her own anxiety and depression. While struggling in school her sophomore year, she became open about her condition and received medical assistance from her doctor. She knew she was not alone and wanted to find a way to help others.

“I’ve always known that dance has relieved stress for me,” she said. “I would go to dance class if I had a test in school the next day because I knew it would calm me down…It automatically released my emotions and let me just be carefree.

I plan on continuing to help people find their passion and use it to help them through hard times.”

To garner awareness for mental illness and the importance of maintaining mental health, Cheemakurthy held a six-week intensive dance workshop for young children. The workshop raised $2,500 that was used to create and deliver 100 positivity packages to

Cheemakurthy says she has set up a schedule to have “multiple dance workshops” throughout the year for young adults to bring awareness to anxiety and depression in order to learn how dancing can help.

“I used to walk through the halls with my aunt, who is a school teacher there [at the school],” Cheemakurthy

said. “After conducting some research, I found out that more than 67 percent of the kids in India are struggling with mental health issues caused by either the nature of their schools or stress put on by their parents. I realized that I wanted to do something to help all those kids who don’t even know what mental health is.”

Cheemakurthy said she hopes to continue using dance to garner awareness for mental health. Despite this continued passion, she plans to pursue a career in neurology where she can use neurobiology to further explain psychological states of mind related to mental illness. The degree will allow her to blend the science of medicine and the art of dance for the continuous support of her cause.

“Ashna’s talent and passion toward dance has definitely impacted more than just herself,” said Anita Cheemakurthy, Ashna’s mother. “I’ve seen her grow into not only a beautiful dancer, but a compassionate one who is willing to give any knowledge that she has to others. She’s always wanted to help people who have been going through the same things she has and are less fortunate to find a solution or get help. I couldn’t be more proud of how hard she’s worked the past few years to become the young, caring, and wise woman she is today.”

Fulton County choses new emergency alert provider FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County recently announced that a new mass notification program will be used to power emergency alerts.

Through the Ever Bridge Disaster Alert System, emergency management will implement the Fulton Alert Community Notification System (FALCON). The program is designed to deliver safety instructions via cellphone, landline, email and SMS for localized emergencies such as flooding, public health crises or active shooter situations.

“Ensuring the safety of all Fulton County residences is our top priority,” said Alton Adams, Fulton County Deputy Chief Operating Officer. “The selection of the FALCON system will assist in making sure that not only residents, but businesses and Fulton County employees accurately and timely receive critical emergency information.”

The new FALCON system is replacing the CodeRED Community Emergency Alert system formerly used within Fulton County. While both systems notify businesses and residents of critical situations, the FALCON system will allow us-

ers to customize what information they actually receive.

“Everyone enrolled in the FALCON system will automatically receive notifications regarding severe weather warnings such as severe thunderstorm warnings, tornado warnings and flash flood warnings,” said Matthew Kallmyer, director of the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency. “However, users will be able to customize their profiles to select what other types of notifications they want to receive. This includes being notified about events such as high wind or winter weather advisories.”

Through the FALCON system, Fulton County employees, businesses, and residents can also receive information about road closures, traffic disruptions, evacuation orders, gas leaks and missing persons. Users can enroll into FALCON via the Fulton County Government website.

Ever Bridge was founded in 2002 in the aftermath of the tragic events of 9/11 with the mission of helping to keep people safe amid critical situations. The system is used by more than 4,500 organizations worldwide.

“The snow added an extra element of complexity and fun,” said Mary Byrne, head coach for the varsity girls’ program. “It was by far, the coolest Kick-a-Thon we’ve had.”

The unexpected snow didn’t keep the Johns Creek High School soccer program from holding its annual Kick-aThon on Feb. 8. More than 70 athletes, coaches and volunteers braved conditions to participate in the program’s fundraiser, which raised $10,000.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Really? Yet another comedy about two guys in drag who must fool everyone around them to accomplish some totally preposterous ends?

Well, as Sid Caesar famously said once about one of his tried and true TV routines: “It’s funny. And you never cut funny.”

Georgia Ensemble Theater Artistic Director James Donadio said as much about his latest production “Leading Ladies.” It is a comedy, and that is all it tries to be. And it tries very hard. And it succeeds.

That is reason enough to see Georgia Ensemble Theatre’s gender-bending comedy about two struggling actors (Are there any other kind?). They seize the chance to play the roles of a lifetime when they learn a rich old lady is about to die and wants to leave all her money to her two distant nephews.

They quickly hatch an improbable scheme to impersonate the two English nephews, cash in on the inheritance and give up playing “Scenes from Shakespeare” on the Moose Lodge circuit forever.

But things take a drastic turn (horrors!) when they discover that the two distant relations are nieces — not nephews. Undeterred, these feisty thespians don drag, and soldier on to become the “heiresses” due all to the moolah.

So why do it now? It’s been done from “Twelfth Night” to “Tootsie.” Director James Donadio willingly concedes the play is all about the laughs. But that is reason enough.

“But with a writer such as Ken Ludwig (“Lend Me a Tenor,” and “The Game’s Afoot”) to write it for you, that’s as good a start as it gets. It’s a fast and furious ride. It’s great fun, and that is all it tries to be,” Donadio said.

Donadio says his theory of directing is to always be pushing the envelope, and comedy is just another direction to push and explore, one where the results are immediate.

The audience either laughs or it doesn’t. With “Leading Ladies,” the audience laughs early and often.

“It’s not meant to be anything else.

And for a winter season play, it is just the ticket audiences want,” he said.

ise. It begins with the two protagonists, ne’er-do-well Shakespearean actors (Robin Bloodworth and Allen Dillon) have chosen to throw away all caution (and semblance of common sense) to pose as the long-lost heirs to a dead woman is only the first gentle tug at credulity.

However the out-of-work thespians soon discover that the old woman is merely dying, and that the missingpresumed heirs are women. Undeterred, they are yet willing to pursue the goal of claiming the inheritance.

They also fall in love with the two ingenues (Caroline Ficken and Casey Gardener) to further thicken the plot.

“Ladies” becomes a rollercoaster ride from there. Think the Three Stooges ascending by stages to Laurel and Hardy to The Marx Brothers and ending with Monty Python.

The audience finally abandons all reason and finds it is reaping a hilarious whirlwind ride that ends in… but here we find simple words cannot do justice.

The better choice is to “pay yer money” and hop on board for the uproarious ride that is “Leading Ladies.” No one is safe, not even the audience is safe (as they find out in the very beginning).

Donadio’s motely crew leads us on a mirthful journey, and once aboard there is no getting off.

Kudos to GET for choosing “Ladies” as a much-needed comedic winter break and for Donadio’s deft handling of a talented and peripatetic cast.

This gets one gets two thumbs up, five stars and a Twinkie. Grinches need not apply.

The opening brings to 28 the number of hotels now operating in the city, which has enjoyed a major surge in business relocations and expansions over the past decade.

“With this one now coming into the fold, we now have 3,569 rooms a night, just in the city limits of Alpharetta,” said Janet Rodgers, president and CEO of the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The hotel industry is vital to the businesses in Alpharetta, Rodgers said.

“People come to either start a business, to decide whether they want to move here to live,” she said. “To do business in Alpharetta, they usually have to stay in a hotel.”

The hotel is owned by Miami-based Epelboim, a development firm involved in residential, commercial and hospitality projects. IHG, which franchises, leases, manages or owns nearly 5,800 hotels worldwide, will manage the property.

Raul Ortiz, vice president of EVEN Hotels and Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites, said Alpharetta provides a perfect climate for EVEN, with just the right mix of business and leisure traveler.

“This submarket here has a lot of fun things to do here on weekends, obviously, and at nighttime,” he said. “And, with all the office space really building

Loading for spring real estate season The pieces are edging into place for what could be an absolutely stellar buying and selling season for residential real estate here in Atlanta.

It is this time of year when those Geoff smith looking to sell their Assurance Financial, homes are hiring gsmith@lendtheway.com the painters, flooring companies and handy-folks to pretty-up their homes for the stage of the spring season. It seems that this year, more than years before, there may be more people doing that.

Numbers reported in the Atlanta Business Chronical show that total home sales were up 7.8 percent in January from where they were January a year ago.

With an increase in the number of closed transactions also came an increase in the median sale price. The average sales price in the metro area was $336,000, up 6 percent from a year ago.

The increase in sales price hints that we are in a seller’s market, meaning there are more people out looking to buy than are listing houses. That’s not great news for buyers, especially those who want to wait another year. A house that was $400,000 last year will go on the market at $424,000 this year. At that same pace, it will be $449,440 next year.

Local experts have been saying that companies in the metro area have not increased wages enough to keep up with the increase in home prices, and this has kept buyers out of the market. What has changed though since last year is a very steep drop in mortgage interest rates. The drop in rates to near historic lows (3.51 percent for a 30-year fixed conventional mortgage, according to MortgageNewsDaily), has made homes more affordable for those looking to buy their first home, and for those looking to move up.

The issue before had been that home prices have gone up so much, that those looking to move up into bigger or better house are finding that the homes they are already in have increased in value to the point where they are already living in their move-up price-point. If you bought a house for $300,000 five years ago, that house might be worth over $400,000 today and isn’t much less expensive than what you can afford to move up into.

With rates sunk deep into the mid-3 percent range right now, a homebuyer will be paying about $250 a month less on their mortgage for a $400,000-house this year than they would have last year. That should help motivate more potential homebuyers to moving into the market for two reasons.

The first is that many have been sitting on the fence because they could not qualify for a mortgage in the range of their desired price-point. Now many can.

The second is that many think this venture into such low rates will not last for long and now may the time to take advantage. They just might be right.

It is almost a proven fact that rates were pushed down significantly by the flu outbreak in China. It has freaked out the markets and rates will very likely jump back up once it is contained. Also, later this year, after the country decides on our president, there is no telling how rates will react.

Spring and summer are typically the two strongest buying and selling seasons, mostly because parents like to move when school is out. It’s hard to find a good, leading indicator as to how the spring season will fare. But one could be how busy the painters are. For this article, I called a good friend who owns a painting company. His answer: “Were covered up.”

Why most people really should get the shingles vaccine

By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta The varicella zoster virus (Chickenpox virus) is insidious. It infects us when we are young then often lies in wait for decades. You can’t Dr. Taylor feel it. You can’t see it.

But it’s there, waiting to strike again – as a rash called shingles.

The virus’s opportunity to cause shingles often comes when our bodies have been worn down by another illness, an immunosuppressive medication such as prednisone or a stressful life event.

The virus starts to replicate; it emerges from its home in cell bodies called dorsal root ganglia near your spine or skull and travels down the nerves to a patch of skin where the virus erupts in a blistering, painful rash.

For many years, shingles was thought to be a mild condition – a painful rash that came, lasted a few weeks, then was gone. With time, shingles was recognized to carry the risk of serious long-term complications. For example, the virus that causes shingles can cause strokes or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain that can cause brain damage). If the virus reactivates in the facial nerve, shingles can cause paralysis of one side of the face and hearing damage. If the virus reactivates in a nerve that goes both to the nose and to the eye, then blindness can result (known as herpes ophthalmicus). So Red Alert: shingles on the face can be a vision or hearing emergency.

However, the much more common complication of shingles is “post-herpetic neuralgia,” which means nerve pain after herpes infection (VZV, the virus that causes shingles, is a member of the herpes family of viruses). Post-herpetic neuralgia is nothing to dismiss lightly.

It is a neurologic syndrome of pain, tingling, itching or other discomfort that occurs often for months to years after the rash of shingles has gone away. The pain can at times be debilitating. There

is no cure. One only hopes it improves with time. Medications like gabapentin can help treat the symptoms, but such medications carry their own side-effects and problems.

The CDC recommends that most individuals fifty years or older receive two shots of the Shingrix vaccine two to six months apart. Because protection from shingles is strongest only for the first five years after vaccination and most cases of shingles occur in those sixty and older, some physicians advocate getting vaccinated at age sixty or older instead of fifty. Dermatologists usually do not carry or administer the vaccine, so the exact age to be vaccinated should be discussed with your internist or family doctor as should any questions about whether re-vaccination is advisable after a number of years.

Why all the fuss? Is shingles really a common enough problem to worry about? Currently, about half of people living to age eighty five will develop shingles at some point in their lives, and post-herpetic neuralgia occurs in at least ten percent of cases of shingles.

Shingles is not fun. Its Norwegian name is “helvetesild” which means “hell’s fire.”

Many Norwegians are descendants of the Vikings, known to be a tough and stoic lot and if they call something “hell’s fire,” then it is worth avoiding!

Evidence is mixed, but treatment with valacylovir and other medications within 72 hours of the onset of shingles decreases pain and may decrease the chance of developing post-herpetic neuralgia. If you are ever worried you may have shingles, be sure to seek healthcare immediately and avoid and warn individuals who are pregnant, immunocompromised or who otherwise might be harmed by catching shingles, as the virus is contagious.

New business proposed for historical zoned site Eclectic store planned at longtime location of old country store

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — A building given historical designation by the city could soon operate as a new business spearheaded by local businessman and restauranteur Chris Sedgwick. The former Hardeman Country Store, 15260 Hopewell Road, is one of only two sites zoned historic by the city, and the building could see new life some 70 years after its construction.

Sedgwick’s plan calls for a general store offering a wide array of items, from fried-to-order doughnuts, gourmet coffee, gelato, fresh-cut flowers and handmade items such as pottery, art and crafts.

Josh Kim, a partner in the proposal through Sands Investment Group, said the business plan celebrates the site’s history. The Hardeman Country Store was built in the 1950s as a general store with gas pumps.

“We feel this project is in line with a general store and is honoring the past of what the site used to be,” Kim said.

In 2006, the building was renovated by a previous owner, a porch was constructed and the gasoline tanks were removed. In 2007, an application to rezone the site from rural residential to commercial to operate a general store was withdrawn, “because of opposition,” according to the city. Another rezoning request was made in 2012 and was withdrawn after the city adopted its Historic Preservation Ordinance. In August 2013, the site was rezoned as historic following a request from the owner.

While the Milton Historical Society has designated 28 historic sites in the city, the former Hardeman store is one of only two to be zoned historic by the city.

The other is the Thomas Byrd Sr. House on Hopewell Road.

The historic designation limits what can be done to the building. Those conditions restrict exterior modifications or the addition of any other buildings on the property. Kim said there were never any plans to modify the exterior of the site, anyway, but Sedgwick has applied for zoning modifications to allow for more parking.

“Right now, we can only have around six or seven parking spots, and that would make it difficult for any business to survive,” Kim said.

The old Hardeman Country Store, at the intersection of Hopewell Road and Thompson Road in Milton, could soon reopen as a new business.

The rezoning request includes deleting some buffer requirements on the site that will allow for 28, gravel parking spaces, with 19 spaces allotted for west of the building and south of Thomson Road. In the city’s presentation to the council, staff noted a future roundabout slated for area will allow ingress and egress on Thomson Road to access the roundabout.

City staff has recommended approval with conditions for the rezoning modification.

“It is in the city’s and community’s best interest to help ensure the viability and physical condition of one of only two designated historical building within the city,” city staff stated to the City Council.

While the building’s exterior cannot be updated, Kim said the plan does call for some renovations on the interior, including the installation of hardwood floors, the creation of a seating area and updates to the ceiling.

“It’s going to be an interesting project, and for those interested in gelato, premium coffee, flowers or things like that, it is going to be really neat,” Kim said.

“It is an endeavor we don’t really have to do and one that is not out to make a lot of money, but we think it will be really cool and fit the area very well. And with it being so close to Bell Memorial Park, it could become a favorite for locals.”

The first presentation of the rezoning modification request was made at the City Council’s Feb. 19 meeting. The item is set to go before the board for approval or denial next month.

If the council approves the modifications and the plan moves forward, it could add to Sedgwick’s influence in the area. Sedgwick has opened several businesses in North Fulton, including The Union and 7 Acre BarNGrill in Milton.

With flying colors 2020 Hyundai Kona My first impression of the 2020 Hyundai Kona was that of sore disappointment. Not with the Kona itself, mind you, it is a peppy, fun-to-drive subcompact crossover with an upscale feel.

In any trim, you can have bright, eye-catching Surf Blue, or my favorite, Sunset Orange with orange contrast stitching on the seats and orange trim on the air vents and around the gear lever. Opting for Limited or Ultimate trim, and you can really stand out with Lime Twist exterior paint with matching stitching and interior trim pieces.

I absolutely love cars that stand out among this crowd like a cherry on cream pie, but instead of my tester sporting one of the aforementioned hues, and I was really hoping it would, the Kona that showed up in my driveway sporting silver paint with black interior. Well then.

At least Hyundai has offered some actual colors to its options, even if dealers are unlikely to stock Lime Twist models for fear they won’t be able to move them. And to those dealers I say, the audience that appreciates vivid exterior paint is larger than you think.

While I was thoroughly disappointed with the color of my Kona, little else detracted from my overall experience with the crossover.

Even in silver paint, the Kona is certainly a looker, sporting razor-thin headlights and taillights, Hyundai’s handsome grille topped with a rectangular inlet, engaging character lines along the sides and angular styling where

angles on the bumper are mirrored by the lower hatch.

But even if the Kona was about as attractive as John Goodman wearing nothing but a corset and thigh highs, it would certainly have ugly duckling syndrome, because it is certainly one of the most engaging and fun-to-drive offerings in the subcompact crossover market.

It starts with the peppiness of the 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4 under the hood. Though the engine is only available in the Kona’s highest trims — lesser models get a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four — it makes up for the price in admission with sprightly performance.

The turbo-four has the liveliness akin to an overly friendly dog who will not stop eyeing your left leg with passion.

The turbo engine provides 175-horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 28 horsepower and a whopping 63 torques over the naturally aspirated power plant.

While all-wheel drive is available on all models, the front-wheel drive Kona is still sprightly off the line, and its peak torque lasts from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm, giving drivers a steady pull and ease when overtaking at highway speeds. The Kona is far from shredding the doors off larger crossovers or sedans, but with torquey punch and a helping of horsepower, the Hyundai feels fast.

Paired with the turbo-four is a 7-speed automatic (the naturally aspirated engine gets a 6-speed) which is velvety, but it can be a bit indecisive in stop-and-go traffic, switching too often from first gear to second and back down again.

The steering isn’t the Kona’s strong suit, it can be fairly numb, but it will be easy enough for most drivers to overlook.

Those small infractions hardly take away from the overall experience. The Kona is balanced through corners with negligible body roll, the brakes are strong, and its small stature make the

And when running to the grocery store, the Kona provides a comfortable ride that dampens a blacktop’s bumps and lumps.

The Kona offers 19 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seats, which is on the scrimpy side of things in the compact crossover market. Only the petit Mazda CX-3 offers less cubic feet.

Passengers in the front are not wanting for space, but adults will be a bit cramped for legroom in the rear.

Not much has been changed for 2020 models in the third year of Kona sales, but smart cruise control is now available in Ultimate trim and a 4.2-inch color display in the gauge cluster and wireless charging is now standard on SEL Plus trim and above after being offered just in Ultimate trim in 2019 models. SEL Plus has replaced the SEL with Tech Package trim.

Pricing starts at $20,300 for a frontwheel drive SE, which includes the turbo-less engine, lane keep assist, forward collision avoidance assist, a 3.5-inch information display, 7-inch infotainment screen and Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Siri and Google Now connectivity.

While buyers pay a premium for Limited or Ultimate models, the top two

trims add an upscale cabin feel and useful and desirable amenities, starting with the turbocharged engine.

Limited trim adds LED head and taillights, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, wireless charging, heated front seats, blind-spot collision warning with lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, 8-way adjustable driver’s seat, sunroof and other features — some of which are available on lower trims. Front-wheel drive Limited models start at $26,100 with all-wheel drive adding $1,500.

My Ultimate tester ($28,980 with destination) included some added safety features — reverse parking distance warning and high beam assist — smart cruise control, an upgraded 8-inch infotainment screen and a not-so-commonin-the-market head up display.

With its engaging drive, comfortable ride and sprightly turbocharged engine, the Kona is a likeable player in the subcompact market. While buyers will have to shell out a bit more than some of its rivals, the Kona provides an upmarket interior, bold styling and a bevy of features.

But perhaps most importantly, the Kona is available in Lime Twist, Sunset Orange or Surf Blue.

Local wrestlers shine at state meet

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MACON, Ga. — North Fulton and Forsyth County wrestlers put on impressive performances Feb. 13-15 at the GHSA traditional state championships, with athletes earning state titles and several schools placing in the top-10 in team scores.

Cambridge led all local programs with nine wrestlers finishing in the topsix of their weight classes to medal. The performances powered the Bears to a state runner-up finish in Class 6A team scores.

Senior Gavin Kane continued his dominance by capturing the state championship in the Class 6A 182-lb. class.

The win gives Kane a state championship sweep, capturing a state title in all four years wrestling for Cambridge.

Kane won three matches by pin before beating South Paulding’s Austin Seymour in a 7-2 decision in the championship.

Evan Kurtz improved on his sixthplace performance at the 2019 state meet to place as state runner-up in the 170-lb. class. Kyle Romano also finished as state runner-up for the Bears in the 138-lb. class, and Connor McHugh was second in the 220-lb. division. The three state-runner up finishers for the Bears were beaten by a decision or major decision in their championship matches.

The Bears added to their point total with five other wrestlers medaling. Brenden Boyd (160 lb.) and Mike Hudson (195 lb.) were fourth, Cullen Kane (106 lb.) and Nick Barton (145 lb.) placed fifth, with Ben Werth taking sixth in the 120-lb. division.

Mount Pisgah placed third in team scores in Class A, led by a state championship and seven medalists.

David Bertrand bested the field in the 160.-lb class to take the state championship for the Patriots, his second with the program. The junior received a bye in the first round and won by pin in his next three matches on his way to the title.

The Bertrand family was well represented, with David’s sister, CatherineGrace and brother, Joey, medaling in their weight classes.

Though the GHSA introduced girls wrestling divisions last season, Catherine-Grace has remained in the boys brackets and placed fourth in her weight class (113-lb.) for the second straight year. Joey, a freshman, made his debut at the GHSA state meet by placing third in the 132-lb. division.

Josh Noble (106 lb.) and Tyler Nelson (126) each placed as state runner-up for the Patriots. Noble improved on his third-place finish last year. Nelson lost a tight, 10-8 decision to Pinecrest’s Mark Metz, the defending state champ, in the finals match.

Brad Spence (138 lb.) and Shane

Johnson (145 lb.) also earned medals for the Patriots.

Blessed Trinity wrestlers had impressive showings with senior Jackson Filipowicz ending his high school career with a state championship in the Class 4A 285-lb. category.

Filipowicz earned a pin, 7-2 decision and a 13-3 major decision to advance to the state championship meet against White County’s Devin Sullens, where he earned a 4-1 decision to secure the title.

Patrick Riordan placed fourth in the 126-lb. class with three wins ahead of a loss by a 6-2 decision in the third-place match.

Mavrick Torrico was fifth in the 182lb. class, with Aaron Werkheiser (152 lb.) finishing sixth. Kevin Daniels (132 lb.) and Gunner Filipowicz (145 lb.) also placed sixth after forfeiting their fifthplace matches due to injury.

Blessed Trinity was sixth in team scores for Class 4A. BT’s region rival Denmark had two wrestlers place in the top-five. Arthur Madsen placed third in the 220-lb. division and Zack Recker was fifth in the 113-lb. class.

North Forsyth was led by Dylan Lyerly who won an all Forsyth County final for a state title. Lyerly took on Lambert’s Thomas Dossett for the 220-lb. state title and took a sudden victory, 5-3, after the crosstown rivals were deadlocked after regulation.

Bentley Wheeler also reached a state finals match in the 160-lb. class. Wheeler won his opening three matches by pin but lost in the title match by fall.

Tate Bissell won his second straight medal, placing sixth in the 152-lb. class, and Sophia Eglian finished fourth for the Raiders in the girls 142-lb. division.

In addition to Dossett’s state runnerup finish, Davis Dobbs was sixth in the 120-lb. class for Lambert.

Pinecrest Academy had two wrestlers from the same family take home

state championships. Mark and Joseph Metz each took the title in their weight divisions.

After winning Pinecrest’s first wrestling state title last year, Mark repeated his championship in the 126-lb. division. After winning a 6-0 decision and a 10-2 major decision, Metz took down Mount Pisgah’s Tyler Nelson in a 10-8 decision in the finals match.

Joseph took his opening two matches by pin to reach the 152-lb. finals and took a 4-3 decision to stand atop the podium.

Another set of brothers led Roswell with Davie and Christian Cartier notching top-five placements.

David reached the 132-lb. finals with a win by pin, 6-0 decision and 13-5 major decision. In the finals match, he fell by major decision to a Collins Hill wrestler to finish as state runner-up.

After winning by technical fall and a pin, Christian was beaten twice in a sudden victory but rebounded with a 9-3 decision over a Camden County opponent in the fifth-place match.

Johns Creek had two medalists at the state meet. Nima Rezaei was fourth in the 170-lb. weight class, and Mark Maruszak (195 lb.) was fifth.

Chattahoochee sent four wrestlers to the state meet with Nate Bukovich medaling for the Cougars in the 195-lb. class.

After taking his opening two matches, Bukovich was pinned in the semifinals but won a 13-3 major decision over Maruszak of John Creek to reach the third-place match. Bukovich then took down another North Fulton wrestler, Cambridge’s Mike Hudson, to place third.

Dunwoody’s Charles McCown (220 lb.) placed fourth. McCown fell in the quarterfinals but won three straight matches by pin to reach the thirdplace match where he lost an 8-2 decision.

With spring’s approach, it’s time to ready fishing equipment Like lots of other fishing enthusiasts, this is the time of year when I start thinking about getting my gear ready for spring and summer fishing adventures. So, I gather up all my flyrods and lovingly spread them STEVE HUDSON out over the nearest Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net flat surfaces (that is, most of the house) and then lovingly inspect each one.

After all, fishing season is just around the corner, and I am duty-bound to be ready.

This pre-season gear check-up is something of a ritual, and judging from conversations with others of like mind, I’m not the only one who indulges. It’s kind of like the pre-launch checklist that NASA goes through before pushing the red button and sending some big ol’ rocket into space.

Yes. It’s exactly like that, and just as important.

Somewhere in the process of checking out all those fly rods, Wife of Mine wanders by. She takes in the rods spread out on table, sofa, piano, counters and all the rest and then, usually, asks the question that fisherfolk really do not want to hear: “Just how many fishing rods do you have?”

You know, I’m not really sure.

So, I decide to count and find out.

There are my personal rods, of course, the ones I fish with myself.

Those include several “trout” rods, each purpose-built for a specific fishing situation. Then there are the rods designed for fishing with big flies for big bass.

There are “small-stream rods” made for fishing for wild fish in tiny creeks. There are saltwater rods, too, among them one that I call my “alligator rod.” Yes, once, I did hook an alligator on a fly rod.

borrow one for a trip. There are the “teaching” rods, the ones I call on when I’m helping someone learn to fly fish. There are the “retired” rods, those with sentimental value which see water only on special occasions. And there are even…

But enough of that. You get the idea.

Still, I need a few more.

Sometimes I take Tuesdays off in April, for example, so I could use a rod designed specifically for fishing on Tuesdays in even-numbered months. That’s an increasingly critical need since April (month number four, an even number) is rapidly approaching. Ha ha.

Actually, I’m just kidding on that one, since today’s rod designers have reportedly been able to create a single rod designed specifically for fishing on Tuesdays during any month of the year!

Can you imagine that? I must have that rod. Take note, family, because I’ve got a birthday coming up!

How many rods? Hmm. I’ll just round the number a little bit and tell her I have three.

Sometime over the next few weeks, I’ll put one of those rods in the truck and head to the water. I’ll make a cast – get a strike – and a few minutes later, I hope,

I’ll have the first fish of 2020!

“Is it a good one?” you may ask.

All fish are good, of course, but some are gooder than others. If that fish happens to be a big one, I might just think about submitting it through the Georgia Angler Award Program for a 2020 Angler Award.

The Georgia Angler Award Program, presented by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division, is a great initiative that “recognizes anglers in Georgia who catch exceptional fish in Georgia waters.”

The program offers awards in two categories, adult (16 and older) and youth. Awards are presented for catching what are called “quality size fish” (either kept or released) that meet or exceed certain weight or length guidelines.

There are different requirements for adults and for youth. For example, for an adult like me, a white bass must weigh 2.5 lb. or be at least 17 inches long. But if the grandson catches one, then that white bass only needs to be 1.5 lb. or 11 inches long to be eligible for an award.

Similarly, if I’m after bluegill, my “adult” goals are 1.5 lb. or 13 inches, while the kids need only land one weighing 0.75 lb. or measuring 9 inches in length.

Hmm…I know a place…

What if you land a qualifying fish?

Those who qualify will receive a certificate, a hat, and a T-shirt, and of course a generous serving of bragging rights too. The program’s rules tell you exactly how to document it and how to submit your application; complete info on the program can be found at http://georgiawildlife.com/fishing/anglerawards.

I was telling a friend of mine about this program one day last week. We were wrapping up a couple of plates of barbecued pork, and as the meal wound down, talk inevitably turned to fishing.

“Angler awards, eh?” my buddy said.

“Sounds like fun!”

And it is. But it’s more than that.

The info gathered from winning anglers provides another way for DNR biologists to learn more about the genetics, age, growth and habitat preferences of big fish. That helps wildlife professionals manage the state’s fisheries “to their greatest potential,” as they say, and the payoff will be even better fishing in years to come.

In 1973, Congress passed a law calling for a Vietnam soldier to be buried at the Tomb of the Unknowns, but no remains fit the requirements. Under increasing political pressure, X-26 was selected for burial in Arlington in 1984, in spite of evidence that the remains belonged to Michael Blassie.

“There are very specific criteria, as it says on the Tomb of the Unknown, it’s ‘Known but to God,’” Patricia Blassie said. “There should be no identifiable characteristics or artifacts, but that was not adhered to.”

President Ronald Regan presided over the funeral ceremony and acted as the next of kin, accepting the interment flag on behalf of the nation.

In the 1990s, the Blassie family began receiving calls from investigative reporters who suspected the “Unknown Soldier” could be their son and brother.

Patricia Blassie, then a captain at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, initially dismissed the theory as crazy, she said.

“I said my mother cannot keep getting phone calls like this,” she said. “It’s just too difficult.”

The family allowed CBS reporter Vince Gonzales to submit Freedom of Information Act requests on documents pertaining to Michael Blassie.

“We didn’t really know what to expect, but we were surprised by what we weren’t told,” Patricia said.

Once Patricia had gathered and reviewed the evidence, the family sat down to decide what to do next. The four siblings argued: Would anyone even care? Was it worth the trouble? Was it not an honor to be buried at the Tomb of the Unknowns?

“My mother was very patient,” Patricia said. “She waited for us to quit our bantering, and she just said, ‘I want to bring my son home.’”

A task force reviewed the Blassies’ case, and in May 1998, the remains were disinterred for DNA testing. The test returned a 99.9 percent match.

“Whatever it takes, a mother will do,” Patricia said. “She gave her blood so they could perform this test, but she would tell you if she was living today that this was not for her. It was for the media, for Congress, for the American

public. We knew where he was.”

Michael Blassie’s remains were returned to his family, and another funeral was held for him in St. Louis.

Patricia Blassie admitted the mishandling of her brothers remains left her disillusioned with her country and her own years of service to the Air Force. However, she says the family’s story is an encouraging reminder of what can be accomplished with a unified force.

“I thought I was going to get out, but that would have been the wrong thing to do,” she said. “I’d rather know the truth, as hard as the truth is sometimes.”
