JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman reported Jan. 24 that she lost $11,000 to a scammer in her hunt to rent a property in California.

The woman had contacted the scammer when she found a property in California that appeared to be for rent through an app.

Customer loses money in equipment transaction JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man contacted police Jan. 21 after he reported losing $23,500 in a possible scam.

The man, who is in the video and sound industry, had reached out to a company recommended to him to purchase a light board. After speaking with a company representative for a few days, the man agreed to purchase a $23,500 product. He was told the product would be shipped from Germany and was asked to make two initial deposits for over $7,000 total.

The man provided the money and later the remaining cost of the product.

He was told he would receive a tracking number, but he never did.

After several days of waiting, the man attempted to contact the representative over phone calls, texts and emails. All went unanswered.

Home burglarized during family vacation JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating the Jan. 26 burglary of a home on Ogeechee Drive.

Thief removes medication from owner’s package JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman contacted police Jan. 23 after she saw two bottles of medication had been stolen in the mail.

The previous day, the woman had picked up her package, which had shipped from Humana Pharmacy. She said she immediately noticed that it had been cut open.

When the woman opened the package completely, she saw that two bottles of medication, valued at over $30 total, were gone.

The woman reported the incident to Humana Pharmacy and the U.S. Postal Service before contacting police.

Homeowner hears burglar ransacking her house JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating the Jan. 24 burglary of a home on Meadow Crest Lane.

When police arrived that evening, the homeowner said she had heard someone in the house and believed the burglar might still be inside. Police cleared the house and found three footprints by the rear door. The glass back door was shattered, and several rooms had been ransacked.

The homeowner said nothing was missing. She added that there had been a similar burglary of her house in

October 2018, in which several pieces of jewelry were stolen, and since that incident, she has not kept any valuables in the house.

Thief burglarizes car while owner walks dog JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man reported Jan. 26 that his car had been burglarized while he was walking his dog.

The man had parked his car that afternoon at Rogers Bridge Trail. About 30 minutes later, he returned to the car and saw that the passenger side window had been shattered.

The man’s wallet was missing. It included $100 in cash, a check written for $300 and five credit/debit cards.

While talking to police and alerting his banks about the theft, the man received an alert about someone attempting to use one of his cards at an Atlanta gas station.

Johns Creek advances parks, traffic projects

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK — The Johns Creek City Council approved construction for the first park from its $40 million park bond, while also laying the groundwork for the larger Cauley Creek park Jan. 27.

In a night of unanimous votes, the council also advanced several traffic projects.

Approved by referendum in 2016, the parks bond was intended to fund two new large parks, two new pocket parks and improvements to existing parks. In the summer of 2018, as the council was presented with conceptual designs for the parks, they realized costs would be about double what was budgeted in the bond.

Forced to scale down and reprioritize projects, the council’s progress was slow until last fall’s council election renewed attention to the parks bond. Now, with two fresh faces on the council, the city approved a $2.3 million construction contract for the Morton Road Pocket Park.

The plans are to break ground in February with a ribbon cutting late October, Parks Manager Robby Newton said.

“There’s a lot of excitement in these neighborhoods,” Newton said. “We still field calls every week. ‘When is this park coming?’”

During the meeting, some neighbors raised concerns about the park’s impact on stormwater runoff. The council approved construction with the condition

that the staff would work to include porous ground materials where possible within the budget.

“We can talk to the contractor, if we can get it within the existing budget, we can make those changes relatively simply,” Public Works Director Lynette Baker said.

The 4-acre neighborhood park will include rubber-surfaced earth mounds, an open play area and playground, a pavilion, picnic shelters, a multi-use path and half-court basketball.

“I realize that for the neighbors immediately around the park that there may be things that you’re concerned about, but it sounds like public works is doing everything they can to accommodate and mitigate those concerns,” Councilman John Bradberry said. “This is something that the community has long wanted, so I look forward to the ribbon cutting.”

The council also commissioned the first construction documents for Cauley Creek Park. The $492,000 contract with Barge Design Solutions will include partial plans for the entire park, environmental permitting and complete plans for the multi-use trail.

Annual homeless count highlights challenges of addressing poverty 2019 Point in Time Homelessness Findings

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY — Volunteers took to streets and shelters Jan. 23 to get a clearer picture of Fulton County’s homeless population.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires that local governments conduct this Point in Time count each year. The count provides communities with an understanding of the demographics of its homeless population — age, race, veteran status or history of mental illness — and determines how federal funds will be allocated.

“The purpose of it is to try to get as much data as possible around the issue of homelessness,” Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis said. “What does the homeless population look like? Is it families, children, adults, male, female?

So we can try to figure out the best ways to approach the challenges of homelessness as a community.”

The rate of homelessness in Fulton County dropped significantly between 2010 and 2018 but remained far higher than similarly sized communities, according to a county report. Fulton County is paradoxically one of the wealthiest in the nation, but it also ranks high in income inequality, with 16 percent of the

Fulton County partners with nonprofits like North Fulton Community Charities, the Drake House, Home Stretch, Family Promise and Community Assistance Center to provide temporary housing and other services to families in crisis.

the needs that emerge from within the North Fulton footprint,” Ellis said. “I don’t think that the best solutions are going to come from a government entity attempting to work on its own. I think that’s it’s going to be something that’s in partnership with many organizations.”

Ellis said by volunteering for the count over the past few years, he’s gained a better understanding of the unique challenges of suburban homelessness.

“In North Fulton and suburban settings in general, the look and feel of it has trended to be families and older

individuals, who often times have jobs yet find themselves in stretches of temporary homelessness,” Ellis said.

These individuals often are living out of a car and finding a public bathroom to clean up each day, which may be because there are not as many options for shelters in the suburbs, Ellis said.

“They’re working, they’re sending their kids to school, but for a variety of reasons — whether its loss of job, break up of marriage, a health issue — they’ve

GDOT calls for public comment on I-285 express lanes project

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY — The Georgia Department of Transportation is wrapping up a series of public meetings for input on its plans to bring 18 miles of express lanes to the top end of I-285.

The project, originally estimated at $5 billion, would build barrier-separated express lanes in each direction along I-285 from Paces Ferry Road on the west to Henderson Road on the east, with connections to I-75, Ga. 400 and I-85.

Express lanes would also be built on Ga. 400 from south of Glenridge Connector to the North Springs MARTA Station.

GDOT held a series of public information meetings in January and will accept feedback online at majormobilityga.com/ projects/topend/ until Tuesday, Feb. 25.

GDOT says the express lanes will reduce commuter delay by more than 6,000 hours each day and provide more reliable trip times. GDOT officials point to the success of its existing express lanes on I-85 and I-75.

In its first year, the Northwest Corridor in Cobb County saw its rush hour period decrease by one hour in the morning and evening, according

to GDOT reports. Travel times are 20 percent faster for the 27,000 trips in the express lanes each day. Drivers in the traditional lanes see a benefit too, with travel speeds up to 20 miles per hour faster than before the express lanes.

The impact of the I-285 express lanes could be even greater because they’ll run both ways, GDOT Communications Director Scott Higley said.

Preparing for population growth The express lanes are needed not only to relieve existing traffic but to prepare for the region’s future, Higley said.

The metro area’s population is expected to grow by 2.4 million over the next 20 years, according to estimates from the Atlanta Regional Commission.

“If we build more lanes, they just fill up,” Higley said. “We’ve done that for decades. and you just end up with a wider traffic jam.”

By setting pricing based on demand and allowing bus riders and approved vanpools to use the express lanes for free, the project will encourage people to think differently about their commute, he said.

This enthusiasm for the project is not shared by all. A Change.org petition opposing the project has garnered 1,400

signatures, including Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch and City Council members John Heneghan, Pam Tallmadge and Tom Lambert.

“I would like to see the whole 285 Managed Lane Project reevaluated for effectiveness and value added,” Deutsch said in a recent statement. “I believe that there are better strategies to reduce traffic congestion on the Top End. There is a huge need to mitigate the impacts this project is going to have on the communities abutting the interstate.”

Residents near the project have raised concerns about noise, air pollution and property taxes. Dunwoody’s Georgetown community, just north of the highway, could be heavily impacted.

In response to concerns, GDOT has promised to evaluate noise barriers as part of the project. As the environmental field work and roadway design moves forward, nearby property owners and renters will be notified of the opportunity to participate in noise barrier discussions.

Higley also emphasized GDOT only exercises eminent domain after exhausting all other remedies to settle with property owners.

Another common criticism of the express lane project comes from those who

would rather see the money go to public transit or would like to see the designs incorporate bus rapid transit (BRT).

Higley noted GDOT’s hands are somewhat tied by the state constitution, which does not permit gas tax revenue to be spent on transit, and that the express lanes will benefit transit riders, as buses will enjoy the benefits of faster travel times.

State Sen. Sally Harrel, speaking before the Dunwoody Homeowners Association on Jan. 26, said she was unhappy with the express lane project and would be looking into a constitutional amendment to unlock transit funding.

“The more I see it, the more I don’t like it,” Harrel said. “Granted, we have got to do something. The reason we’re going with toll lanes is because … by the Georgia Constitution, GDOT cannot spend money on transit, so I will be filing a bill for a constitutional amendment to change that, because I believe our Georgia Constitution is holding us back.”

Harrell acknowledged it probably will not happen this year but said it was time to start the conversation.

Johns Creek High to stage ‘Big Fish’

Based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and film directed by Tim Burton, “Big Fish” focuses on the father-son relationship of Edward and Will Bloom. Told in alternating timelines, the musical follows Will as he tries to make sense of his father’s larger-than-life stories.

“There’s a little bit of everything,” said Ella Collins, a junior who plays Edward’s wife Sandra. “The main message of the show is just to have fun and tell crazy stories.

There’s lots of twists and turns in the plot, and definitely some tear-jerker moments.

When you leave, you’ll feel impacted.”

Kian Kermani, the senior who plays Edward, agreed.

“It’s a fun experience to watch, but at the core it’s really about some key themes,” Kermani said. “You’re in for

Kermani said the achronological nature of the show adds a layer of challenge to the performance. One of his castmates took on an even more daunting challenge — Ronek Chatwal who plays Karl the Giant performs the whole show in 3.5 foot stilts.

“I had no experience with stilts

beforehand,” Chatwal said. “It’s been a really cool learning experience. Having to dance while incorporating the stilts — it’s been challenging.”

Chatwal said he spent a lot of time practicing with the stilts over winter break and gradually increased the height. He said he is grateful to have a new skill for his resume and for how the

stilts affect his performance.

“It helps me develop my character,” he said. “Sure, you can look at the script and see he’s a giant, but getting on the stilts for the first time I really felt like I know who this guy is.”

Performances are Feb. 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

ROSWELL, Ga. — For many students living in rural Honduras, it comes down to choosing between education or going hungry.

“Survival is what you’re focused on every day,” said Phil Dodson, executive director for Lunches for Learning.

As they grow older and become stronger, children are often tasked with searching or working for food, he said.

“Kids start dropping out,” Dodson said. “Of the kids who start kindergarten in Honduras, 30 percent of them will not make it to first grade. And another 30 percent drop out before second grade.

And the numbers just decline.”

Lunches for Learning works to break the cycle of poverty in rural Honduras by providing healthy lunches to students so they can complete their education. Dodson joined others in the organization in a Jan. 23 talk at the Roswell Rotary Club meeting at Roswell Area Park.

Roswell Rotary Club itself is one of 40 sponsors for schools in Honduras through Lunches for Learning. The

sponsorship provides each student with a free lunch each day for a year.

Food is shipped to the schools to prepare. In some cases, Lunches for Learning helps build a basic kitchen for the school to prepare meals.

For some students, that one lunch is a lifeline. It may be the only meal of the day and may make the difference of whether or not they go to school that day.

“We provide lunches in school, and that’s it,” Dodson said. “In this part of the world, kids drop out of school to go look for food.”

That doesn’t mean the lunches are a free handout, he added. Lunches for Learning has accountability at every stage to make sure the students who benefit focus on their education.

The addition of a guaranteed meal has transformed communities, he said.

The meals provide proper nutrition and energy to the students, allowing them to focus in school for a better future, Dodson said. It becomes a source of pride for the community, with students and parents volunteering to staff the school kitchen.

“They take so much pride in their community and their families,” Dodson said. “They’re so proud that these kids are able to remain in school.”

Lunches for Learning started in 2004 in Alabama by Ron Hicks when he saw the poverty first-hand during a visit to Central America. The organization has since expanded and is now based in Roswell.

Over the past year, Lunches for Learning grew by five sponsored schools, and its staff is prepared to do the same again this year, Dodson said.

a suspect take his package after it was delivered to his home on Starfire Lane.

That afternoon, the man had received an alert that the package had been delivered. When he exited his home to pick up the package, he saw the suspect holding it. The suspect allegedly waved and said, “thanks for the package” before getting into a car and driving off.

The man was in pursuit of the car while calling police, and officers told him to stop.

The man said he had seen the suspect’s car parked near his property before and believed the suspect might be a Chattahoochee High School student.

The package contained a $400 Nintendo Switch.

Surveillance camera catches suspected package thief JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating the Jan. 22 theft of a package from a home in Johns Creek.

The package had been delivered that afternoon, and when the homeowners arrived that evening, they could not locate it.

Surveillance footage showed a man take the package shortly before 6:30 p.m. from the home’s front door. The suspect then ran westbound.

The package had contained a $30 Pikachu onesie.

In other business at the meeting, the council approved three intersection upgrades along Old Alabama Road.

The projects were chosen based on the intersection prioritization policy approved last year. For about $550,000 the city will construct traffic signals at Spruill Road and Autry Falls Way and a turn lane extension at Foxworth Drive.

The city also approved a contract with Bartow Paving for its annual asphalt patching and pavement maintenance initiative. For about $570,000, Bartow will complete repairs along McGinnis Ferry Road, State Bridge Road, Old Alabama, and other minor roads.

Though families experiencing temporary homelessness is more common in the suburbs, Ellis said he also sees examples of chronic homelessness, usually related to a chronic mental illness or substance abuse.

“Homelessness is a complex topic,” Ellis said. “People find themselves in situations of homelessness for many different reasons. There’s definitely not a one-size-fitsall solution to eliminate homelessness.”

This year, Fulton County will take the first step on a project that could address chronic homelessness in a big way, Ellis said.

Before construction of the express lanes, GDOT plans to complete three smaller projects: adding westbound collector lanes between Chamblee Dunwoody Road and Ashford Dunwoody Road, changes to the interchange of I-285 and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and extending the auxiliary lane between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive.

ty is a place outside our jail setting for a person with mental health challenges that are manifesting in behavior that is lawbreaking or highly disruptive,” Ellis said. “If they wind up in a jail setting, many times it just causes the problem to get worse. While we’re trying to deliver behavioral health services within that setting, it’s not what it’s designed for.”

As part of the 2020 budget, the county will spend $275,000 on a behavioral health comprehensive plan, which will include a feasibility study for constructing a crisis stabilization center. The goal of crisis centers is to provide emergency support for individuals experiencing mental illness or substance abuse and divert them from incarceration.

Ellis, who represents Milton, Mountain Park, and large portions of Roswell, Alpharetta and Sandy Springs, recently announced his intention to seek re-election for the District 2 County Commission seat. east segment of the express lanes, from Ga. 400 to south of I-85, is slated to go to construction in 2023 and open to traffic in 2028. The west half would begin construction in 2026 and open in 2032, according to the latest timeline.

Current plans place two lanes in both directions between I-75 and I-85 with single lanes on either end. GDOT is in the process of determining where the access points will be located along the route.

The $11 billion Major Mobility Investment Program, which includes the I-285 Top End Express Lanes, is a separate project from Transform 285/400. The Transform project is focused on the interchange at I-285 and Ga. 400, including new flyover ramps, new collector lanes, bridge reconstructions and a new diverging diamond interchange at Abernathy Road.

Transform 285/400 began construction in February 2017 and is slated for completion late this year.

Milton Business Council forms under regional chamber banner

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton Business Alliance is steering a new course under new leadership.

The group announced this month it will join forces with the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce to create the Milton Business Council.

The new entity falls under the umbrella of the GNFCC and will be managed by business leaders within the city.

The move to connect the two groups began last year when the Milton Business Alliance, which began as a volunteer organization in 2009, realized about half its members were also associated with the GNFCC. Leaders with the group decided the Milton Business Alliance could have a farther reach and could better support the city’s business community with the merger.

“I am extremely excited to work with Milton business owners and Milton city leaders to form a business council that creates real value for its members,” GNFCC President Kali Boatright said. “I am also humbled that MBA leadership is willing to put their 10-year history of good work into our trust. We are committed to the success of the Milton Business Council as we move into the new decade.”

John Herbert of Herbert Legal Group will serve as the first chairman of the Milton Business Council. Herbert, who has been a member of both organizations, said the Milton Business Alliance has done well over the last 10 years in its mission of promoting Milton businesses. He said he thinks the group can

“As a volunteer organization, we felt like [the MBA] had hit a turning point, and we took it as far as we could take it,” Herbert said. “We got to 100 members last year, and we felt like it needed an injection of a structured organization and key leadership, and that’s the opportunity we saw with the chamber. We thought it would be a great fit with our cheerleading [Milton businesses] and our

message, and the ability to amplify what we are able to do.”

Sharon Mays, chair of the former Milton Business Alliance, shared that sentiment.

“We believe the partnership with the GNFCC and the valuable leadership it provides will enable the Milton business community to move to the next level, offering our members more support and services,” Mays said.

The merger will allow Milton business

owners the opportunity to promote their companies across all of North Fulton County versus the limited confines of the city’s borders.

“What we are able to do through the chamber is provide a spotlight through the GNFCC on Milton and its businesses,” Herbert said. “We can use the GNFCC megaphone to talk about what’s going on in Milton.

Compared to the other larger cities under GNFCC’s umbrella — Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, Sandy Springs — Milton is unique in that only about 15 percent of the city is zoned commercial, and those areas are divided into three districts: Downtown Crabapple, Birmingham Crossroads and Deerfield Parkway. The Milton Business Council becomes the first group under the Greater North Fulton Chamber banner that will focus on a specific municipality. Herbert said the council is determined to show the parent organization that it is successful.

Still in its infancy, the council has already fostered a connection with the city, Herbert said.

“The city has been great supporters of ours,” he said, adding that both business organizations have close ties to the city.

“To me, it’s what will make this new organization work,” Herbert said.

As the business community grows in Milton, Herbert said he is looking forward to what the future holds for the council.

“We feel like the involvement of the Chamber and the concentrated base in the city of Milton is going to create a receptacle big enough to handle and enhance the growth of Milton businesses in the next 10 or 20 years,” he said.

“All three of my children are ELP graduates from 2017-2019. As high school juniors facing college decisions, ELP helped expand their understanding of our North Fulton community and its structure which helped guide their career interests. The contacts made with fellow students, parents and community leaders have already proven beneficial for each of them.”

Emerging Leaders (ELP) is a yearlong high school program for students who wish to develop leadership skills, identify and address community issues and interact with local leaders. Students will enjoy a combination of interactive lectures, discussions, site visits, community service, and networking opportunities.

Alpharetta continues to feed on its own success The sun came up today. Politicians are fighting. And Alpharetta is getting a new $50 million project.

Right on the heels of completion of its City-Center, and within months Geoff smith of completion of Assurance Financial, Avalon’s new ofgsmith@lendtheway.com fice tower, Greenstone Properties announced plans to start construction on a new six-story, 128,000-square-foot office building estimated at $50 million. The building will be on their property on the southwestern corner of Old Milton Parkway and Ga. 400, right across the street from Avalon and Alpharetta’s planned multiuse trail project called the Alpha-Loop.

One aspect that should not be taken lightly on this project is that it is what real estate professionals call a ‘spec’ project. That means they are starting construction without any tenants signed. While this has become a little more common intown Atlanta, it is very rare outside the perimeter. The developer, and the banks lending them the money to build the project (in this case Federal Capital Partners) have to have a strong confidence in an area to build a spec project there. And there seems to be plenty of confidence in Alpharetta these days.

I was talking to Lamar Wakefield, whose firm Wakefield Beasley, masterplanned Avalon, and The Battery and almost every major suburban mixed-use project coming on line these days. Avalon has become one of the most admired projects built in the last 10 years. Wakefield told me that communities were coming to him all the time wanting him to help plan an Avalon in their town. He said that’s just not feasible.

“Not everyone can support an Avalon,” he said.

The same goes for this spec, Class-A office building in Alpharetta. The confidence in the project is in place because if you are a company that needs to be in Class A office space, why wouldn’t you want to be within walking distance to Avalon? Or right off the exit of Ga. 400? Or right along a multi-use trail that takes riders and walkers 5 miles throughout the city from the new City Center, through Avalon and throughout the changing North Point Mall area?

Success breeds success. Alpharetta planted a flag back in the 1990s when Jim Cowart convinced local officials it was the right thing to do to build the first gated community in the metro area in Country Club of the South. That brought in CEOs who didn’t want to drive to downtown Atlanta, so they moved their offices to Alpharetta. Someone had the bright idea back then to line Winward Parkway with fiber-optic cable, making the desolate roadway the most connected roadway in

the country back then. That drew in data centers, regional headquarters and headquarters from across the country.

And on and on it goes. Now the uses are all playing off of each other, making each other more successful. With the new City Center, Alpharetta added a significant amount of retail. The thing about retail is that it needs customers to survive. So, all around the City Center are new residential developments that will supply customers on weeknights and on the weekends — and new office buildings that will supply customers on weekdays. The office-buildings are there because the retail provides a vibrant and fun atmosphere for employees to get to be in. Unemployment is low and businesses are doing everything they can to draw in top talent. Being located near an Avalon, or Alpharetta City Center, or the Beltline in Atlanta, give those businesses a huge advantage. A recent study showed that many of today’s employees are willing to take less money to be in an office that is in a walkable and vibrant environment. That’s good because that office space is getting more expensive.

A completion date has not yet been set for the new office project.

Start with the Basics The NAR compiled a report detailing the top return-on-investment projects homeowners can complete for their property. On top of renovating these foundational parts of your home, maintenance is also a key factor.

Check both your foundation and roof for cracks, settling or movement, and have an expert properly assess these areas to help prevent interior damage from leaks or weather elements. For hardwood floors, perform routine cleaning and clean spills immediately with a slightly damp cloth rather than a wet or steam mop, which will damage the finish over time. Long-term maintenance

includes renewing and recoating your hardwood floors every three to five years, as well as sanding and refinishing them every few decades.

Increase Efficiency Save on your monthly utility bills by scheduling inspections and maintenance service calls for your HVAC system, plumbing and electricity. These inspections will ensure your systems are operating effectively and efficiently.

If costs are still high, you may need to add more insulation to your attic and behind the walls, especially for the colder months.

Additionally, updating your electric panel and wiring will help you avoid possible electrical shocks and fires caused by short circuits or lightning. Plumbing systems occasionally leak and produce extra moisture, which can result in backups and other problems. Repair leaks and drips to allow drainage to work properly.

Freshen Up Another score calculated by the NAR’s report was a Joy Score, a number determined by the homeowners’ happiness after completing each renovation, for interior projects, which was based on a scale of one to 10. The projects

with the highest three Joy Scores were a kitchen renovation (10), closet renovation (10) and full interior paint job (9.8).

If a kitchen or closet renovation sounds daunting and expensive, a change of paint is a basic, fairly cost-effective way to freshen up your home’s interior. Also, simple changes in décor, such as throw pillows or rugs, can make your living spaces feel like new.

Give Your Landscaping a Makeover Weather permitting, you should give your lawn a makeover before the spring season arrives. Allow plants and flowers to blossom easily by laying fresh mulch as well as trimming dead branches from trees and shrubs. This will provide fresh, clear space for new life to flourish. Also, you should remove and replace any dead plants and consider enhancing your landscape with patio pavers and other outdoor additions.

The wall at the edge of the world I want to tell you about the wall.

Yes, the wall. But no, not that one.

The wall I’m thinking about barred me, for decades, from another and altogether different sort of world.

STEVE HUDSON It’s not a very strong Get Outside Georgia, wall. In fact, I can aa4bw@comcast.net stick my fingers through it with less effort than it takes to type these words. But it’s still foreboding and impenetrable, as impenetrable as a sheet of steel — or of water.

Yeah, water. You’d be surprised just how tough such a wall can be.

Last Tuesday, I thought about that wall of water all the way to Seaventures.

It’s a place where they teach people how to break through watery walls and enter into the brand-new world on the other side.

You’ll recall that about a year ago my daughter gave me, for Christmas, a course in scuba diving. I’d always been fascinated by scuba. As a child I spent untold half

hours in front of our black and white TV watching Mike Nelson have all sorts of undersea adventures on Sea Hunt. Later, I’d daydream about what it would be like to experience such adventures myself.

But those thoughts never went much beyond speculation until the daughter of gave me the possibility for Christmas.

And now, with the class scheduled, I’m committed.

Eric, who will be one of my instructors, tells me I’ll have no trouble. He says I’ll love it.

“You can do this!” he says.

So here I am, according to Google Maps just 0.4 miles from my destination. There’s no turning back now.

I arrive, park, and sit for a moment. Do I really want to do this? Do I really want to leave all this perfectly good air and enter a world that’s 100 percent H-2-O? “You can do this!” my daughter had said. “I know you can!”

“You’ll do great!” Wife of Mine had added, encouraging, cheerful, smiling.

So I take a deep breath. I climb out

Gatorade names Blessed Trinity athlete Girls Runner of the Year

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Blessed Trinity junior Hannah Miniutti added to her list of accomplishments Jan. 27 when she was named the 2019-20 Gatorade Girls Cross-Country Runner of the Year, earning her the designation as the top female runner in the state for the athletic year.

“I never expected it, and it’s really special to me,” Miniutti said. “I’ve been doing everything I can possible to be the best runner I can be, and getting to run with these incredible people around me has pushed me to my limits. In Georgia, there are so many incredible runners, and it’s cool to have those people around me pushing me every race.”

After struggling with injuries the last two years, Miniutti is now back to full strength, and her Gatorade Runner of the Year award adds to her growing list of accolades over the last few months.

In December, she was named the girls Runner of the Year by the Atlanta Track Club. She also paced the field in the 2019 GHSA cross-country state championship meet to capture the girls Class 4A state championship in Novem-

ber. Her state meet time of 18:51.49 bested the previous BT girls program record by over 34 seconds.

She also took the top spot in the Region 7-AAAA championship meet and the Meet of Champions Tournament.

Miniutti was the only girls runner from Georgia to compete at the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Region championships where she finished 7th overall with a personal record of 17:46.7.

That result allowed the BT standout to qualify for the Nike Nationals in December where she placed 75th out of the country’s top 201 girls runners.

“Competing at nationals was so special, I never could have seen myself getting there at the beginning of the season,” Miniutti said. “I had watched YouTube videos of people talking about their experience at nationals, I thought how much of a dream it would be to compete there.”

As the cross-country season progressed, Minuitti’s coach said she could potentially qualify for nationals. While she believed that might not be a strong possibility until next season, as the year went on she saw her goal of reaching the pinnacle of high school girls cross-coun-

try become a reality.

“The experience was unreal,” she said.

“They go all-out for the athletes. I got to meet so many new people and connections in the running world, and it is inspiring to have those runners by you.”

For all her success, Miniutti is quick to thank Greg Johnson, the Blessed Trinity girls cross-country head coach, and the support from her teammates.

“Being with Blessed Trinity has been absolutely incredible,” she said. “Coach Greg Johnson is the best coach I could ever ask for. He cares so much for the runners, and he focuses on individualism and creating a training set for one person that is best for them. And my teammates and I always push each other. They are sisters to me. I couldn’t be more thankful to have that atmosphere.”

Miniutti will now turn her attention to track and field where she competes in the 1600- and 3200-meter races. She will also continue to seek out a program to join at the collegiate level. She has had unofficial visits to Georgia Tech and Georgia and will soon visit Furman University. A focus for the junior will be finding a program where she feels like a part of a second family, which is how she feels at Blessed Trinity, she said.

Miniutti is the third North Fulton female athlete to earn the award in recent years. Lindsay Billings of Northview took the 2015-16 award, and Fellowship Christian’s Emma Grace Hurley was named runner of the year for the 2014-15 season.

I’m one of a class of six. There are two teens (one received the class as a birthday present, and his brother wanted to do it too), another teen and his dad (learning together so they can dive together), and a lady who wants to learn scuba so she can dive with her daughters. I learn this as we make our introductions.

I read “togetherness” between the lines of the introductions, and there does indeed seem to be a lot of community in the world of scuba. Instruction begins. We learn things.

Then, says Eric, “Let’s head out to the pool!”

The pool is warm by pool standards, and it’s where we don masks snorkels and dive boots and fins. So far, so good!

Then, much sooner than I’d expected, we are strapping ourselves to metal tanks. Atop each tank is “the thing with the hoses,” as I once called it — that is, the pressure regulator system that converts high-pressure air to something

we people can handle. One of the hoses ends in the “regulator,” which I now clamp in my mouth. Through it, I am told, I can breathe.

Underwater.

Uh-oh. There’s the word. “…so put your face in the water and try taking a few breaths,” Eric is saying to the group. We are, at that point, standing in the shallow end. The water is about 4 feet deep.

“You can do this!”

Right about there, I start to think about what I am about to do. I mull it over, examining possibilities.

That is my mistake. I feel a tiny ripple of edginess disturb the once-calm surface of my mind. The ripple gathers, grows, rises into a wave that breaks over me even as it asks what seems, at the time, to be a perfectly reasonable question: Why do I want to leave all this perfectly good air and go, intentionally and on purpose, through the wall at the edge of my world and into the world of water?

“…because it will be the most amazing thing you have ever done!” I think Eric said that. Or maybe it was me talking to myself.

It requires an act of will, but I push my face through the surface. One part of my brain says “No!” but another says “You can do this” and I remember the first rule of scuba diving (“Breathe!”) but my brain says “don’t breathe, dummy, you’re underwater” even as my still-rudimentary training says “yes-you-can-yesyou-can!” (wow) and so I do and at last, very tentatively, take just one little puff.

Lo and behold, the regular is working. Air flows. I am immensely encouraged by this discovery, for that means I am not going to die, standing there in 1.3 yards of water.

I take another swig of air, blessed air.

It is successful too.

Lo and behold, I am underwater. And I am breathing.

What happens next? Quite a lot.

Some of it I’m proud of. Some of it is frankly a bit embarrassing. But through

it all, those four words (“You can do this!”) echo (whisper?) in my mind.

“It is simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying,” I tell my wife later, trying to put it all into words.
