Johns Creek approves major road upgrade The Johns Creek City Council has approved contracts for construction of a roundabout at Bell Road at Cauley Creek Park/Old Homestead Trail. Work on the project, estimated at just over $900,000, is scheduled to begin in January with completion in the fall.

The roundabout was proposed as part of improvements slated for the Bell/Boles Road corridor, part of the tier 1 list of projects the city approved for funding through the special transportation sales tax. The roundabout will accommodate an entrance to the new Cauley Creek Park, where work has already begun on a trail system.

Salon owner swindled for $2,500 in phone scam JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police were dispatched to Medlock Bridge Road on Dec. 2 after a woman claimed she was swindled out of $2,500 in a phone scam.

The victim, a 52-year-old Brookhaven woman, told police she got an automated call purportedly from Georgia Power on Dec. 1. According to the incident report, a woman came on the line and informed the victim that the account for power at her Johns Creek salon was delinquent and she had an outstanding balance of $1,496.

The victim said she spent at least an hour on the phone with the woman going over her payments, which she said were made from her bank account. The caller said the payments had not gone through and forwarded the call to a man who told her she had to pay the outstanding balance and a $1,000 deposit to keep the lights on at her salon, the report stated.

The woman told officers she withdrew $2,500 from her business account and paid the supposed bill.

She later realized it was a scam and confirmed that suspicion with Georgia Power’s main office.

Partygoer struck with bat by alarmed homeowner JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A 44-year-old man swung a baseball bat at a drunken reveler who inadvertently entered his home along Featherstone Road on Dec. 6.

According to the incident report, the homeowner heard suspicious noises and spotted a man on the first floor of his home around 1 a.m. He told police he grabbed a baseball bat and confronted what he thought was a bur-

The homeowner detained the suspect until police arrived.

Police questioned the suspect, identified as Grayson Lee Blount, 23, of Ivy Road NE, Atlanta. Blount claimed he was friends with one of the residents and had been to the home earlier for a party. He said he left to take a walk and was attacked by the homeowner when he returned.

Police determined Blount, whom they suspected was intoxicated, had actually attended a party at a residence around the corner on Harrington Road.

The homeowner there confirmed that Blount had been at the party but had been kicked out because he was drunk and unruly. That homeowner told officers Blount was welcome to come back to the party, the report stated.

Police cited Blount for disorderly conduct and took him back to the Harrington Road home.

Fulton Schools puts out call for substitute teachers

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Fulton County School System is hanging up the “help wanted” sign as the COVID-19 pandemic and overall labor shortage impact staffing levels. District leaders are hoping financial incentives will help fill the growing needs.

Specific numbers of shortfalls among teaching staff were not released, but Superintendent Mike Looney acknowledged eight schools were at risk of not being able to open after the Thanksgiving break. “[Those] schools struggled to open with enough staff, but we have a good bench, and those schools were covered to fullest extent possible,” Looney said.

Fulton Schools has approximately 6,900 teachers among its 14,000 total workforce.

Communications Director Brian Noyes said the labor issues were not directly related to COVID, but an indicator of the overall labor situation across the region.

Most metro districts are facing labor shortages, and all are drawing from the same dwindling pool.

Noyes said Fulton Schools hopes its plan to increase the daily rate for teachers will attract more substitute staff to Fulton County while it waits for the crisis to end.

Beginning this month, Fulton Schools will boost the daily pay rate for substitute teachers from $100 to $175. For paraprofessional, clinic and clerical substitutes, the rate increases from $80 to $100.

The Fulton School Board also approved a plan to expand the number of days a substitute can work from 17 to 20 days, and increased the daily rate for long-term subs from $120 to $200.

Noyes said the incentive plan aims to counter what the district hopes is a short-term shortage caused by the pandemic. The program will expire at the end of the school year in May, unless the School Board opts to continue it.

Noyes said the district loses teachers each year to retirement and attrition, and this year is no different. He said since the start of the school year Fulton Schools has had 64 of its 6,900 teachers resign or retire, which is not unusual.

To date there have been no deaths of staff related to COVID complications.

Substitutes must meet requirements including a high school diploma (college degree preferred), successful completion of a training course, and references.

Johns Creek considers guidelines for stormwater upgrades

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council discussed the latest revisions to the extent of service for the city’s proposed stormwater utility at a work session on Dec. 7.

On a rainy day in Johns Creek, runoff water rushes to a nearby storm drain, sometimes overwhelming its capacity and pooling on the roads, in ditches, even in backyards. The overflow causes erosion, flooding and contaminates rivers and lakes.

Residents, especially along the Medlock Bridge corridor, have seen the impact of stormwater on their yards.

Even on sunny days, stormwater remains at the forefront of the city’s agenda.

Roughly 80 percent of the city’s stormwater management systems were installed before current best practices methods.

Various proposals under consideration call for spending anywhere from $10-$31 million over the next 10 years to set the system right. With the passage of the 2021 budget in September, the city now has $3.3 million in its stormwater accrual account, money set

aside to build a workable solution to the problem.

At the Dec. 7 work session, Community Development Director Ben Song presented the council with the city’s proposed extent of service. The proposal came from the council’s decision at a July 13 work session, where they determined the extent of service should include portions of the stormwater system outside of the right-of-way, extending to cover structures and conveyances from headwall to headwall, the small retaining walls placed at the inlet or outlet of a stormwater pipe.

Song explained that commercial properties will be responsible for everything on their property. Residential properties will be assessed as to the extent of responsibility of homeowners.

After establishing an exact extent of service, the city would be responsible for public streets and rights-of-way, public and city-owned property piped drainage system or easement in residential areas connected to the public road system.

The city has the right to access some of the privately owned stormwater facilities for inspection and enforcement, but maintenance would be the responsibility of the property owner.

pushed for the extent of service to be a headwall to headwall and to include lakes, rivers and retention ponds.

Song explained that if the city were to include these other elements, it would come in a second phase after the implementation of the stormwater utility and would come at a greater cost. He said it would be a big step to incorporate a citymanaged system running from headwall to headwall.

“There would be additional costs, and

we may have to do another assessment to figure that out,” he said.

Councilmember Lenny Zaprowski expressed his concern that, while the stormwater utility is a fee-based service, he thinks residents should have a say on the matter through the ballot box, especially if there are going to be additional costs if the extent of service broadens.

Mayor Mike Bodker said he initially shared the same concerns cited by Zaprowski, but the stormwater problem is not going away and has a big price tag.

“We’re just so early on into the process and it’s going to take a little while,” Bodker said. “Look, at the end of the day, manpower time, even if you want to put it on the ballot, you’re not putting it on any ballot anytime soon, which means we’ve still got time for this process to continue to play out exactly the way it’s playing out.”

The city is moving forward with the proposed headwall-to-headwall extent of service and will return in January to discuss the next phase. Johns Creek to pursue re-certification as City of Ethics Measure follows weeks after heated discussion of back-door politicking

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council moved to be re-certified as a City of Ethics under the Georgia Municipal Association program on Dec. 7.

The action comes less than a month after a scathing rebuke from City Councilwoman Erin Elwood about transparency at a Nov. 12 town hall session at City Hall.

During discussion involving disbursement of $3 million in CARES Act funding to local businesses, Elwood said that between the time the topic was first discussed in mid-October and the time the issue resurfaced Nov. 2, council members contacted each other behind the scenes to form a consensus outside of public view. The back-door politicking, she said, changed the course of the general consensus reached at the earlier meeting.

Elwood, in collaboration with Councilwoman Stephanie Endres, had initially proposed that the money be disbursed in two tiers. Those businesses hit hardest by government mandates during the pandemic — those forced to shutter or take substantial measures to survive — would occupy the top tier and receive a larger share.

That proposal ultimately failed in favor of a flat rate disbursement to all qualifying businesses.

Elwood said she was shocked at the campaigning that went on behind the scenes, and she called for an end to the practice.

“You know where we don’t vote?”

Elwood said. “We don’t vote on the telephone between meetings is where we don’t vote.”

Pushed for more specifics, Elwood continued.

“I have privately encouraged this council to stop getting on the phone before meetings and coming to a consensus before a vote to know exactly who’s going to vote, how they’re going to motion,” she said. “I have had our legal counsel – I encourage all of you to speak to him – to stop this. I have asked you

privately to stop this, and now I’m publicly asking you to stop this.”

She said she, herself, received a phone call 15 minutes before the Nov. 2 meeting asking whether she would flip her position on the disbursement method.

Endres joined with Elwood, calling for an end to behind-the-scenes politicking.

“The conversations behind the scenes, they happen all the time,” Endres said, adding that the CARES aid to businesses dragged longer than necessary because of the politicking. She said city staff had been setting up a website based on the early direction of the council, then had to alter course two weeks later when the direction changed.

Councilman John Bradberry told Elwood that the both of them had had conversations about the matter.

“We were going back and forth to see ‘what are your thoughts? what are my thoughts?” Bradberry said.

He also said he understands Elwood and Endres put in a lot of work to draft their proposal, but others on the council worked hard to find an equitable plan, too.

“This is the biggest example of trying to find the cloud in the silver lining that I’ve ever seen,” Bradberry said.

Councilman Lenny Zaprowski pointed out that both Elwood and Endres were working behind the scenes to develop the tier proposal that was first introduced. He said each of the seven members of the City Council is entitled to a vote, and no official vote was taken on the early plan.

The GMA City of Ethics program is not an approval of past or present conduct by the city or any city official. It is designed to raise awareness about ethical issues at the local level and provide a local forum for the airing and resolution of legitimate concerns.

Johns Creek became a City of Ethics in 2016, but the program requires reapplication every four years.

To receive re-certification, the city must adopt five principles designed to guide elected officials. They include: to serve others, not ourselves; use resources with efficiency and economy; treat all people fairly; use the power of our position for the well-being of constituents; and create an environment of honesty, openness and integrity.

Pandemic eases testing burden on students End of Course tests will not affect grades

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The bottom line for students is mandatory state tests are still on the table this school year, but they will count for nearly nothing toward a final grade.

State School Superintendent Richard Woods prevailed in his months-long effort to ease the testing burden on students after the State Board of Education withdrew its opposition to a lower weight.

After the formality of a vote this week by the state board, Georgia’s End of Course Milestone tests will count for a minimum of .01 percent of a student’s final grade for the 2020-21 school year.

Typically, the tests count for 20 percent of a student’s final grade.

“I appreciate the State Board of Education hearing and responding to the clear will of the people on this issue,” Woods said. “It is logistically, pedagogically and morally unreasonable to administer high-stakes standardized tests in the middle of a pandemic.”

Some members of the state board opposed lowering the weight of the test because it diminished accountability for teachers, students and districts, and the concern students would not take it seriously.

Woods countered that in the midst of a pandemic, End of Course tests are not reliable measures of academic progress or achievement.

Under federal law, states must have an annual test of student achievement to measure progress. In Georgia, the End of Course tests are given each spring in courses taught primarily in high school.

Last spring, the tests were waived as COVID-19 shuttered schools across the state.

As the pandemic continued into the fall, Woods requested a federal testing waiver for the 2020-21 school year. That request was denied by the U.S. Department of Education, but Woods campaigned to change course and instead change the impact of the test.

In October, Woods proposed the .01 percent weight at the State Board of Education meeting. The board rejected that proposal, supporting instead a 10 percent weight on the student’s final grade.

Woods maintained that 10 percent still left the “high stakes” label on the tests.

During a public comment period in October and November, more than 86 percent of the 93,000 respondents supported a .01 percent weight, compared to only 11 percent who agreed with the 10 percent weight.

In late November, the State Board

of Education also agreed to accept Wood’s recommendation and will likely make it official this week. The state’s chief education official said the decision takes some of the pressure off students and teachers in a year full of disruptions.

“Who we are will be measured not by a test score, but by how we meet this moment,” Woods said. “[This decision means] no test prepping or cramming…no punishing students, teachers, or schools for scores.”

Faith organizations meet rising demands

By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — North metro faith organizations have assembled resources and partnerships over the past year to meet heightened demands for food, clothing and housing.

A bustling economy derailed this spring, leaving millions nationwide in the harrowing position of stretching money further than ever before.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows Georgia ranked eighth in the nation in unemployment in October at 4.5 percent. The national average was 6.7 percent last month, according to another BLS dataset.

With no cessation in sight, food security concerns are at the forefront of consciousness for the needy and those organizations committed to help.

Earlier this year, Alpharetta First Baptist Church provided thousands of dollars for families in immediate need within local schools. Meals and resources were donated to healthcare workers at North Fulton Hospital and Alpharetta Public Safety.

“As the weeks grew into months, we were able to partner with Fulton County schools to pack and distribute more than 900 boxes of food to more families in our area,” Pastor of Communication Myles Chatham said. “We consider it a joy to serve this community in this season.”

The Roswell Community Masjid took action to assist the area community in March as initial recommendations to stay at home occurred.

RCM’s Care Club stepped in to help vulnerable families needing food and assistance with errands. Helping the elderly and

medically compromised stay at home was another focus. The club also provided meals to support the Roswell Fire Department.

Masks and sanitizers were donated to Fulton County School staff to support enhanced cleaning before meal service.

Faith-based partnerships have provided additional food assistance.

“RCM teamed up with other mosques and Muslim organizations to feed healthcare workers in hospitals across metro Atlanta,” Operations Manager Lubna Merchant said. The partnership provided food and meals to communities throughout metro Atlanta.

An interfaith collaboration with Roswell Presbyterian Church provided lunches to school children and the elderly on a weekly basis in Roswell neighborhoods.

First Redeemer Church, in Cumming, and “There’s Hope for the Hungry” have led an aggressive campaign to provide groceries to the vulnerable. To date 23,000 boxes of food, equivalent to 243 tons, have been donated throughout North Georgia.

The church’s “Operation Christmas Child” effort took on new urgency this year.

“Our church family assembled and shipped over 1,100 shoebox Christmas gifts to needy children throughout the world,” Senior Pastor Dr. Jeff Jackson said. “We also served as a central collection center for this effort and processed over 8,000 of these gifts.”

Chabad of North Fulton has been active as a resource helping people with financial challenges such as rent and food.

“As a faith-based group a lot of our support has been focused on emotional and spiritual counseling for people affected by the stresses associated with the pandemic,” Rabbi Hirshy Minkowicz said.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Only a few games into his senior season, AJ White became the all-time leading scorer for the Chattahoochee boys basketball program Dec. 5.

White recorded a steal, pushed the ball up the court and put in a layup to push his career total at Hooch to 1,938 points, surpassing the previous record set by 2013 graduate Markus Terry.

“It’s a good accomplishment,” White said. “A lot of good players have come through this program, and to break the record, at home, it’s just great.”

Hooch head coach Chris Short called White “Mr. Consistent,” and was thrilled the senior got to break the record.

“To see a guy who has come in, has been a really coachable player, worked hard, done everything he needs to do and bought into our culture, bought into our philosophy, I’m super proud of him,” Short said. “It’s all about him.

Our program has helped him, but this is something he had to earn. At the same time, he told me in a text how important his teammates were in him achieving that goal with their sup-

port and making him the player he is today.”

White has been a crucial cog in Chattahoochee’s success in recent years. The guard established himself with the team his freshman year, and the Cougars have been winning consistently since.

The team went 23-7 in his sophomore season and reached the second round of the playoffs. Last year, White was a driving force in Chattahoochee’s first state championship. The 2019-20 squad went 25-7, captured the Region 7-6A championship and went on to lift the Class 6A state title trophy in March.

Though White is one of the few remaining standout pieces to that championship team, Short said the senior’s game is evolving to make an even greater impact.

“I know what I’m getting as a coach each and every night [from White],” Short said. “I know roughly the number of points and assists he’ll have, but what I am seeing this year is leadership, and statistically his rebounds and steals are up. He’s the guy leading this team now with last year’s group graduating, and he’s putting us in a position to continue that standard.”

White is confident the team can live

up to the success of last year’s team.

“We definitely can get back to the spot we were in last year, but there are definitely going to be challenges because we are not that same team,” he said.

GEORGIA’S 2021 OUTLOOK – PART 1

Economic rise and risk

“It’s not something economists could have easily predicted,” said Alexander Hill, a University of Georgia senior research analyst. “We had no idea it would have such a huge impact on the economy.

We thought it would stay in China. We thought a vaccine would come out sooner.”

The original economic forecast saw solid growth for 2020, with jobs and the GDP expected to go up a few percentage points. Hill added the U.S. had great federal fiscal policies that kept interest rates low, and lending was still going well.

But the pandemic rewrote the script.

U.S. Labor Department data shows the nation lost 22.2 million jobs. Approximately 42-percent of those jobs have been reinstated, according to a Pew Research Report. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 4 million of those positions have been eliminated.

Hill said the 2020 recession was very short – only six months. But the economic pain lingers.

“Even though the recession is technically over, a lot of people are not feeling that in their wallets and in their day-today lives,” Hill said.

Experts from UGA’s Selig Center for Economic Growth have unveiled their 2021 outlook for Georgia.

“The national economy is not going to recover as fast as Georgia,” Hill said. “We expect 1.5 percent job growth in Georgia from 2019 to 2021.”

Analysts also believe Metro Atlanta

will do even better than that, with job growth expected to increase by 1.7-percent. Hill said economic recovery in North Fulton, Dekalb and Forsyth Counties will be driven by business development — attracting new corporations and expanding factories. The Atlanta area also specializes in industries that suffered the least in 2020: transportation, warehousing, logistics and wholesale trade.

Plus, there’s the benefit of a highly skilled and educated workforce.

“Another driving factor is innovation,” Hill said. “You see a lot of entrepreneurship … It’s a very important indicator for economic growth.”

A third highlight for north Atlanta Metro is population growth, which experts project will lead to a strong housing market in 2021.

“The housing market is a big foundation of the economy,” Hill said.

The report on Georgia’s 2021 economic outlook also comes with a few warnings, such as the risk of a doubledip recession if coronavirus cases continue to reach new highs.

“A double-dip recession would be caused by a combination of two things — another shutdown on the state level and no stimulus coming out at the federal level,” Hill said, adding that the likelihood of Georgia suffering that fate is low.

“We predict that Georgia will avoid it based on availability of the vaccine and the state’s business friendly environment.

Governor Kemp also seems resistant to having another shutdown,” Hill said. “We want to keep businesses going, even if that includes implementing more safety regulations, like requiring more mask use.”

The economy was the top issue for

registered voters in 2020, with 79-percent telling the Pew Research Center they considered it very important. From a political standpoint, Hill said economic indicators, like the stock market, are having a positive response to PresidentElect Joe Biden.

“The forces at work are favoring a Biden presidency and are optimistic that the pandemic will kind of be over in large part by mid-2021, or late 2021, when we have enough people wearing masks or at least becoming vaccinated,” Hill said.

On a specific level, economists believe Georgians should brace for changes and a slow recovery for 2021 and 2022 in several key areas: Cost of living: “Because of our nation’s fiscal policy, it will slightly increase inflation, and the cost of living will go up in the short term,” Hill said, noting that includes housing prices.

Jobs: Hill said the job market will definitely be up, “but, it will take time to get back to where we were pre-pandemic.” With no other economic risk factors expected, hiring could reach 2019 levels by mid-to-late 2021.

Income: The raw numbers might go up with companies becoming optimistic about hiring and raises, Hill said.

Corporate profits will also be up. But the long-term trend of wage stagnation will

not keep up with the cost of living.

Cost of healthcare: “Unfortunately, it’s going up,” Hill said. “Hospitals suffered major financial losses this year.

Their profits don’t really come from people coming into the emergency room with COVID-19. They come from people having surgeries and treatments and preventative care,” Hill said. “The insurance companies have shown that they are very willing to put the price increases on the consumer instead of shouldering it themselves.”

Consumer spending and confidence: “People are seeing the news about the vaccine, and consumers are ready to get back out there and spend money, travel, and whatever they would normally be doing if there wasn’t a pandemic,” Hill said.

Brick-and-mortar stores: “The one aspect of our economy that likely will not go back to the level it was, is the existence of brick-and-mortar retail,” Hill said. The pandemic recession expedited the trending shift toward online shopping.

Restaurants, tourism and business travel: Dining in restaurants and vacations are expected to return to 2019 levels, but that could take until the end of 2022. Hill said business travel could also return to normal by 2022, but not by the end of 2021.

GET OUTSIDE, GEORGIA

Got kids? Got cabin fever? Check out Fish Art! If you’ve got school-age kids at home, I don’t have to tell you that 2020 has been a challenging year. Balancing work, school, and health concerns has been a big challenge for lots of STEVE HUDSON folks, and along about Get Outside Georgia, this time of year, many aa4bw@comcast.net parents of school-age kids are wondering what to do next to keep their young learners engaged and moving ahead without everyone going crazy in the process.

I may have a suggestion for you there.

Consider getting you and your kids involved in the education-oriented Fish Art Contest, presented by Wildlife Forever, a 501(c)3 nonprofit conservation organization, and a number of sponsoring partners.

According to the contest’s website (fishart.org), the Fish Art Contest dates back to 1997 and was inspired by a Minnesota 5th grader’s homework assignment. From

that beginning, it has grown into an international competition that’s designed to introduce young people “to the wonders of fish, the joy of fishing and the importance of aquatic conservation.”

The Fish Art Contest combines art, science and creative writing “to foster connections to the outdoors and inspire the next generation of stewards.” That’s a good combination in my book!

The Fish Art Contest is open to students in grades K-12 (ages 5-18), and entering is easy. First, visit the fishart.org website with your child and choose a fish species from the “Official Fish List.” Then create an original illustration depicting the species you have chosen. The illustration must be horizontal and must measure either 8.5 x 11 or 9 x 12 inches.

Each student must also personally create a one-page write-up focusing on the “habitat conservation needs” of the species featured in the illustration.

For example, an entry focusing on trout might talk about the importance of things such as clean water. The write-

up is required for students in grades 4 through 12 but is optional for student in grades 3 and below.

The finished art, the write-up, and a completed entry form must then be submitted by the contest deadline, March 31, 2021. Entries should be mailed (preferred) or emailed to the address found on fishart.org. Winners are chosen in four categories (grades K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 1012). and will be announced in May. In addition to the overall awards, quite a few special awards are also presented. One of them, and a particular favorite of mine, is the “Smile” award.

This award, says the website, is presented to the student “who’s piece makes the judges ‘smile,’ inside and out!”

There’s even a special Go Fish Georgia Award just for young wildlife artists from the state of Georgia. You will definitely want to check this one out.

The Fish Art Contest has become something of a phenomenon. Last year, the contest drew thousands of submissions from students all over the world.

“Our judges had an extremely challenging time selecting our winners with 5,429 entries from 47 states and 32 international countries,” notes Julia Luger, education director at Wildlife Forever. “We can’t wait to see what you create for 2021!”

Are you wondering what last year’s winners look like? Check out the first, second and third place winners. Judging from what I saw when I took a look just now, there are some great young artists out there! And to help kids plan their entries, there are even helpful comments from previous judges.

So, don’t let our upside-down world drive you (and your kids) crazy. Instead, get out the art supplies and start thinking about some fish art.

Traditions inspire and bring joy I have good friends — a couple — who I look to as examples of what “living well” looks like. And I don’t mean a life of affluence, but that they live “right.”

They get it.

To use a sloppy metaphor, if they were RAY APPEN a meal, it might be Publisher Emeritus fresh-picked steamed ray@appenmediagroup.com (locally grown) vegetables and salmon that slept the night before in some cold stream, full of spices, and just enough mystery and aroma to attract strangers to the table. The wine would be a new wine to others — a discovery — and dessert always, would be a surprise and always the same, either key lime pie from Joes Stone Crab or a rich mysterious chocolate, slightly chilled, next to cut berries and topped with homemade whipped cream.

The meal would be something one always looked forward to, and it would last for hours because the conversation

before and after would weave in and out of the affair like a melody through a sonata — a melody that evoked memory, laughter, and easy connection. The meal, if ever there was an example, would bring all into one focused moment, in the now — individually and for and with each other.

I just finished reading an article about Yo-Yo Ma in this Sunday’s New York Times Magazine. He talks about being and living in the present.

“You are acknowledging someone’s existence by being in the present. It may take a lot more energy, but boy, is it much more rewarding. It makes me happy. It makes people happy. It’s wonderful,” he observes.

He links his music to people — as a lifeline — and all music. He sees it as a conduit, a means as well as an end, as a catalyst as well as a template, that explains, connects, gives meaning, and validates our lives — and helps us be in the present.

Cynthia Yancey Smith

Cynthia Yancey Smith of Atlanta, formerly of Gainesville and Alpharetta, passed away peacefully in the presence of family, friends and God’s angels on December 2, 2020.

Born in Savannah, Cindy and her family traveled the world as her father dutifully served in the United States Air Force. From Georgia to North Carolina, New Mexico, Texas, Libya, New York and South Carolina, Cindy learned to make fast friends which served her well throughout her life.

After settling in Atlanta, Cindy began a successful career in voice work and the radio industry. Known by her radio personality “Amanda Stevens,” Cindy entertained on such stations as Y-106, WLBA, and FOX 97.1. Her work in radio is what brought her to Gainesville where she met her future husband, Mike.

Their union of 32 years produced the shining light of their lives - their daughter, Anna Kate. Cindy dedicated her life to Annie’s development and happiness.

Anyone who knows Anna Kate knows that Cindy’s life’s work was accomplished tenfold.

Cindy wanted everyone that touched her life to know she loves each and

everyone of you and her family is eternally grateful to you.

A celebration of Cindy’s life will be held on a future date when all of those who love her can gather safely.

and can lead like the yellow brick road, to instances of happiness, a happiness we all want and need, especially in these difficult times.

I tried to take an inventory of traditions that I know are meaningful to me. The first one that came to mind was writing Christmas cards each year.

However, that immediately brought up a dilemma. What makes something a meaningful tradition and when does it become a tradition? Sending holiday cards is a tradition, yes, but that act, overall, doesn’t feel like the “tradition” that I have in mind. Almost everybody sends cards. Some are generic and are only signed. Others include a photo or two of family and a note. The one I send is usually a 3,000-word missive with at least a dozen photos. So, I think that none of the above is the type of “tradition” that I am thinking about.

However, there is one card that I receive every year (for the past 30-plus years except last year) that, to me, is. It is always a hand-crafted card in watercolor usually that depicts the entire family — the parents, their children and their grandchildren. It is themed differently each year. And every year, there is a handwritten note from Mrs. von Thron to me and my family. Receiving that card each year allows my Christmas season to begin.

It is something I look forward to and it is one of the reasons and motivations that has helped me write my Christmas letter now the last 40 or so consecutive years. It is a tradition to me because it is personal, it requires effort, and it helps connect people. The card and note by themselves are the “tradition,” as well as the effort that I know went into the card and my own expectation of receiving it. It brings me joy. It helps keep me connected.

The couple I referenced at the beginning have provided for me, my family and many others, an example of an intentional tradition that fosters connectivity and presence. Every year they travel to San Francisco for a week. They eat at the same restaurants. They visit the same destinations. And they always invite or take friends to come share their West Coast tradition. When they are there, they always call our daughter, Amelia, and have her join them for a meal or two. They always invite Amelia’s friend, Ariana, to join them. We always get wonderful pictures of the visit. It is a tradition that connects and bonds.

Football season at their house is such a wonderful tradition. During the holidays, they have their annual football pool, and everyone who wants to play kicks in their 10 bucks. They wear T-shirts of their favorite teams when they are playing. Lunch or dinner is served before or after the games. Friends from out of state always attend. It is their tradition that

everyone expects and looks forward to. It is a big deal because they make it so.

Each spring is cruise-time, and with the exception of this year, they take a cruise with their in-laws. It is a tradition that everyone looks forward to. It is tradition that is personal, that connects, that keeps focus on now, and each other.

They create tradition deliberately and intentionally. It generates joy for so many. It enriches. And it creates shared experiences.

I started making a list of other traditions that come to mind but I am already over my word limit mandated by the word-counter Gestapo. So, I’ll just throw out a couple more and end by asking you to email me about a couple of your special traditions — RayAppen@Gmail.com.

So here is a sample of some traditions that come to mind.

• Childhood spring flower garden planting with my sisters and mom. Watching the flowers come up, watering them, appreciating their beauty together. We each had our own little plot.

• My old friend Dorsey Gray’s duck hunting on Thanksgiving Day in Rockledge, Florida, is one I never participated in but adored because I saw how happy and excited, he, his dad and brothers were. Also experiencing the Grays’ wildcut Christmas tree each year is a tradition that stays forever.

• Going to Nutcracker at the Fox with Christina and our children was always treasured.

• January 1 polar bear swim at the beach with Christina and our beach friends.

• As a child, watching Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin special for Halloween, during Christmas holidays watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” with my sisters, going to Tradewinds in Cocoa Florida after church with the entire family, going to midnight service Christmas Eve with Christina and children, going fishing with my dad after getting up at 3 a.m. and eating breakfast at the all-night diner.

My goal is to have the discipline to create new traditions for myself and family. I think that may be more important now than ever. Create at least one and do it by a deadline. It can be a small deal or a big deal. But I need to do it. I have the example to follow. I have the people around me I love and care for who can participate. Create some happiness and some being-in-the-present for yourself and for others. Happy holiday.
