JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a theft from a property on Riverclub Parkway.

The owner of the property had rented the unit to a family that he had legally evicted. On Oct. 14, the owner received a message that the family had moved out.

Home cameras catch burglary in progress JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating an Oct. 11 burglary at the home at Twillingate Place.

On Oct. 14, the owners of the house, who were overseas, discovered footage of two men entering their house late evening three days earlier.

They called a friend to check on the house. When the friend arrived, he saw the back door to the house was shattered.

Police arrived, searched the home and found the master bedroom had been ransacked. Cameras in the house had been unplugged.

The two suspects caught on camera had their faces covered.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police Oct. 16 after he noticed thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry had gone missing after his wife’s death.

The man’s wife had willed the jewelry to various family members. When the man sought to retrieve the jewelry, he was unable to find it.

The jewelry, worth $10,000 total, had been kept in a pouch.

The only other people with access to the pouches’ location was a cleaning service, the widower said.

Woman loses hundreds to telephone scammer JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating an Oct. 15 incident in which a woman lost $1,000 to a scammer posing as an officer with the Social Security Administration.

A person called the woman that afternoon and said they had a warrant for her arrest. They said she would be arrested if she did not follow instructions.

The scammer knew the woman’s Social Security number and her bank account numbers.

several items missing, including a washing machine and dryer.

The total value of the missing items is $5,000.

The owner added that he had not received rent payment from the family for eight months.

Police investigated the apartment and found several broken pieces of furniture and rotting wood as well as a gas leak.

The woman did as instructed and bought two $500 Game Stop gift cards and read off the numbers.

After completing the transaction, the woman kept receiving calls from the scammer asking for more gift cards. She called police instead.

Electronics stolen from parked car JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating an Oct. 16 incident in which a car parked at The Derby Sports Bar on Nesbit Ferry Road was burglarized.

The owner had parked his car at 7 p.m. and visited the bar. He returned about five hours later and saw that the back, driver side window of his car was broken.

A black handbag that had been tucked behind the front passenger seat was stolen. It had contained a laptop and iPhone.

Thief breaks into car unattended in lot JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Kennesaw man called police Oct. 16 after he saw that his car had been burglarized.

The man had visited a restaurant at the Old Alabama Square Shopping Center that evening. After about 40 minutes, the man returned to his car and saw that the back, driver side window had been shattered.

A $125 briefcase was taken from the car.

Wanted man found during traffic stop JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested a man Oct. 17 after he was recognized as a wanted man during a traffic stop.

Police had been patrolling on State Bridge Road late that evening, when an officer saw a car pass by with expired registration.

Police pulled the driver over. While talking to the driver, police were notified that the man was wanted in Texas for felony fraud impersonation.

Officers confirmed the warrant. They arrested the man, identified as 40-yearold Corey Simon of Irving, Texas, on warrant.

DUI arrests Lucas Christopher Tate, 23, of Commodore Trail, Bloomington, In., was arrested Oct. 19 on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta for DUI, failure to maintain lane, open container violation and obedience to traffic control device.

Edward Michael Rahill, 66, of Lancaster Square, Roswell, was arrested Oct. 14 on Ga. 9 in Alpharetta for DUI, open container and failure to maintain lane.

Nathaniel Antwan Williams, 34, of Stoney Ridge Lane, Johns Creek, was arrested Oct. 18 on Haynes Bride Road in Alpharetta for DUI, following too closely and no license on person.

Larry Eugene Fitzpatrick, 47, of Salem Drive, Alpharetta, was arrested Oct. 19 on Mayfield Road in Alpharetta for DUI and failure to maintain lane.

Shannon Carl Kelly, 42, of Commodore Drive, Chamblee, was arrested Oct. 17 on Atlanta Street in Roswell for DUI, failure to obey a traffic control device and supporting a cell phone.

John P. Ghering, 59, of Hollyridge Way, Roswell, was arrested Oct. 13 on East Crossville Road for DUI, open container and impeding the flow of traffic.

Librado Lopez Merino, 45, of Longleaf Drive, Roswell, was arrested Oct. 14 on Atlanta Street for DUI, failure to maintain lane and driving while unlicensed.

Man flees from store after using fake bill ROSWELL, Ga. — Police are investigating an Oct. 16 incident in which a store on Holcomb Bridge Road reported receiving a counterfeit $100 bill.

The store manager sad a man had entered the establishment that afternoon, selected a few items and then gave the fake bill when attempting to purchase the food.

When an employee verified that the bill was fake, the man fled. He took the food with him without paying.

The man was last seen walking toward Market Boulevard.

Candidates talk TSPLOST, arts funding JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Voters will decide who will fill three Johns Creek City Council seats Nov. 5.

In total, 10 candidates are running, including one incumbent, Councilman Chris Coughlin. In Johns Creek, all City Council members represent the city atlarge, and terms are four years.

Voters can check their registration and locate their polling place at mvp.sos. ga.gov.

To help inform voters, the Johns Creek Herald asked each of the candidates: Q1: Over the past few years, the City Council has been slow to move forward on projects funded by the transportation sales tax (TSPL OST) in part because of a fundamental disagreement about whether the council has discretion to deviate from the project specifics presented to the public in advance of the referendum.

The City Attorney and Georgia Attorney General have advised the council that straying from the original project plans could invite a lawsuit.

If elected, what would be your approach to TSPLOST projects?

Q2. Johns Creek is home to several music, theatre and dance groups, but has no dedicated performance venue within city borders. Instead, these groups typically perform in churches or outside Johns Creek. Activists have been working to create a multidisciplinary arts center for the city, which is estimated to cost $50 million to build.

What should be the role of the City Council in supporting arts in Johns Creek?

Q3. In 2018, Johns Creek passed a new Comprehensive Plan that emphasizes maintaining low-density residential use for the majority of the city while revitalizing existing shopping centers and Technology Park. According to the document, 12 percent of the city’s office space is vacant, 18 percent of the city’s retail space is vacant and 93 percent of Johns Creek residents commute outside

Post 2 Royce Reinecke Q1: The City was not ready for the TSPLOST vote when it came up in 2016. We did not have designs ready to build, nor valid cost estimates. We need to finish that work to determine what is feaREINECKE sible and prepare now for the next TSPLOST vote in two years.

Q2. The arts should be as significant a consideration in our parks and recreation program as physical sports. The city should enter into an agreement with the Cultural Arts Alliance, like we have with the Ocee and Newtown recreational leagues, to provide arts programs in the community.

Q3. I will listen to the business community to learn from them what the city may be doing wrong that is affecting their growth. I would balance the concerns of businesses and residents by refreshing our Strategic Economic Development Plan in a joint effort that is forward looking.

Q2. Johns Creek needs to have a unique identity and brand; it can be accomplished through arts and culture center. It should be a public-private partnership; City Council should play a key role in supporting this partnership and in execution of the project.

Q3. Focus on reviving half empty shopping centers, create a placemaking environment, attract more foot traffic. Bring more jobs into Johns Creek utilizing vacant office space. Work with universities in setting up a campus and with companies in setting up incubation center. These initiatives coupled with Johns Creek’s educational level, 66 percent residents with bachelor’s degree, will provide an environment for corporations to move into Johns Creek.

Brian Weaver Q1. Prioritize the TSPLOST projects based on the needs of the citizens of Johns Creek.

This will make a major impact on city improvement and quality of life.

Q2. The role of the City Council is to listen WEAVER to the needs of the citizens, engage in productive conversations regarding funding of various projects, as well as research other metro cities’ role in addressing similar concerns expressed by the citizens.

Q3. I would encourage the council to attract viable businesses to John Creek by using some of the governor’s initiatives for small business to stimulate the economy by offering desirable employment and community partnerships to the citizens of Johns Creek. In addition, I would balance the interest of businesses and developers by promoting sale or lease of vacant office, retail space, and affordable housing initiatives.

Post 4 Kent Altom Q1: Our City Attorney is correct: A tax collected for a specific purpose must be used for that purpose. We should first address “danger zones” where accidents occur and points of congested ALTOM ingress and egress with traffic control devices.

Q2: The amount our city currently contributes towards the operational costs of the arts is zero. First, that must change so private donors will give funds to support the arts, including the construction of the Legacy Center. I am the

only candidate advocating for a “publicpublic-private” fundraising effort where our city is first to contribute and other public as well as private sources join in.

Q3: The interests of residents and businesses need not be at odds with one another. We must initiate a concerted effort to attract businesses that Johns Creek residents need and want. To those who favor “no growth,” I say, “indecision is a decision” and the worst kind because you forfeit your opportunity to shape the future.

Marybeth Cooper Q1. We need to immediately utilize the TSPLOST funds for Tier 1 projects. City Council needs to review these key items: does it meet the legal requirements of TSPLOST and will it ensure the continued COOPER safety of our residents and those traveling through our great city? If it does, get it done. Citizens have waited long enough.

Q2. We must support the arts the same way we support our parks. There needs to be a public-private partnership; the same as Ocee, Newtown and Autrey Mill parks are managed. The type of partnership has to be determined by City Council and the Johns Creek Visual and Performing Arts Center Task Force.

Q3. We need to cultivate our entrepreneurs and small businesses. Eliminate burdensome red tape and irrelevant policies. Create a public-private incubator in Technology Park that matches start-up businesses with volunteer mentors. Give support in business plan development, funding sources, and overall business acumen.

Chris Coughlin (I) Q1. I created a process of evaluating and prioritizing each project based on costs, time to complete, magnitude of impact, benchmarks of success, etc., so I’ll continue to follow the data for maximum utilCOUGHLIN ity. Currently, we have 8 of 10 TSPLOST Tier 1 projects in an active stage (e.g., concept, engineering, right-of-way acquisition and construction) with disagreements remaining on the widening of Jones Bridge, which is likely to exacerbate congestion.

Q2. We (City Council) passed a resolution this year supporting an arts

Candidates: Continued from Page 4 center in Johns Creek. I hope the city can continue to partner as the Legacy Center becomes a reality and an anchor for our arts community.

Q3. I’d like to ensure the city doesn’t become a burden to our businesses (I attempted to reduce permit fees and occupational taxes for businesses for this reason) and I’d follow the Comprehensive Land Use Plan to ensure the aforementioned balance.

Adam Thomas Q1. The taxpayers already approved these projects and have paid $37 million since 2016 to pay for them. The council has only allocated $3 million to fund them. We need results, not more excuses when THOMAS it comes to fixing our traffic problem. It’s clear to me a change needs to be made on the council to move these projects forward.

Q2. To move forward, three things need to occur: A clear plan on how this facility will pay for itself so taxpayers aren’t stuck with an outdated facility in

NEWS 20 years, significant private investment so everyone has skin in the game, and a public vote where it’s clear our residents want to pay for a portion of this.

Q3. With over two decades in working with business owners and entrepreneurs, I have experience to build an environment where businesses know they can thrive. I do not support additional high-density residential.

Post 6 Erin Elwood Q1: As candidates, we are not privy to the same attorney-client privileged discussions to make an appropriate legal risk assessment.

Q2. We should support the arts with public funding. We are raisELWOOD ing the brightest, most talented children, shuttling them from piano to dance lessons while showing them we do not value arts as a community. We are looking for an identity as a city, and we should harness the opportunity to be the center of arts and culture in the north metro.

Q3. An 18 percent vacancy rate is bad for business and our residents — we are losing commercial tax revenue! There is a misapprehension that developers are our sworn enemies in a zero-sum war of

development. The council controls land use, not the developers, and they should support developers where their interests align with the residents — in building dynamic, walkable, profitable commercial spaces that the residents want and where businesses can thrive.

Judy LeFave Q1. As I see it, if both the City Attorney and the Georgia Attorney General have advised against straying, I would not want to open the door for a potential lawsuit. The term “feasible,” in my LeFAVE opinion, becomes subjective after all the objective lenses have been applied.

Q2. The City Council needs to support the arts community. Without the support of City Council, it is near impossible to raise funding from grant sources. Once City Council decides to support (not necessarily monetarily) the Arts Center, avenues for funding will open.

Q3. I would want to work on developing a Master Plan for the City and include resident input such as the city did with the Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

This will be our “road map” if you will to help Johns Creek grow into its potential.

A Master Plan will help guide developers,

both business and residential, to bring what we want and need to our city.

Issure Yang Q1. I believe we do have discretion in how we use TSPLOST funds and that we would prevail in any lawsuit if a feasibility study doesn’t support the initial design. There is a precedent for this apYANG proach in our neighboring cities. Going forward, I would ensure more transparency throughout the decision-making process so that we can avoid this situation.

Q2. I fully support the arts, and I believe that the City Council should have a plan to develop a thriving arts community. The council should gauge public support to determine the combination of public and private funding. I will advocate for the arts in our overall long-term vision.

Q3. A robust business community is necessary for our city’s growth. I would encourage new businesses through incentives and a reduction in unnecessary regulations making it easier to do business in Johns Creek. Having more businesses to patronize would improve quality of life, reduce traffic, and lower the residential tax burden.

Johns Creek approves commercial development on McGinnis Ferry

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council heard two zoning cases Oct. 21 — a retail proposal on McGinnis Ferry was approved unanimously, while a Jones Bridge residential case was deferred.

The first case was a request to build a 32,000 square foot restaurant and retail center at 6650 McGinnis Ferry Road.

The undeveloped lot shares the corner of McGinnis and Johns Creek Parkway with Delta Community Credit Unit and is near small office buildings, hotels and a Panera Bread.

In 2014, the property was rezoned to allow for development of a daycare facility that never came to be. Earlier this year, the developers began the zoning process for a shopping center but withdrew due to soil issues.

The new site plan includes two buildings with outdoor patios, 146 parking spaces and a stormwater retention pond on the west side of the property. The developers propose making that side of the property greenspace, maintaining the existing stream and trail and connecting it to the shopping center with a small bridge.

The proposal is not in line with the

future land use map, which imagines office space on the subject property.

Still, city planning staff recommended approval of the development, noting it would have minimal traffic impact and complement nearby businesses.

In line with the staff and Planning Commission recommendation, the council unanimously approved the rezoning with certain conditions, baring certain uses like drive-throughs and car repair shops.

The second zoning case was not as clear a picture. The proposal was to develop eight single-family homes on a 3.7 acre lot on Jones Bridge Road across from West Morton Road.

The site is currently zoned agricultural but includes three single-family homes built around the 1940s. The lot is adjacent to the Orchards at Johns Creek condos and Long Indian Creek subdivision.

The Public Works department has said the development would require several changes to the existing intersection, including changing the right-only lane on West Morton to allow drivers to turn onto Jones Bridge or into the subdivision.

City staff recommended requiring the developer pay for those improvements as a condition of the rezoning, as well as

dedicating right-of-way for the widening of Jones Bridge Road.

The Planning Commission recommended denial of the project in a 4-1 vote earlier. During the public hearing, five resident spoke against the rezoning.

The applicant, Terrance Slade with TDS Holdings, and two of the property-owners spoke in favor of the project.

As Slade answered questions posed by the City Council, such as whether trees along the rear of the property would be preserved and how he would address the slope, he said those answers would be given before he was granted a land disturbance permit.

That did not go over well with the council.

“We heard the phrase multiple times ‘We’ll resolve that during the LDP phase’ and that hasn’t served the city well in the past,” Councilman Steve Broadbent said.

Slade asked the council to consider the proposal on the merits of the zoning type and density, which were in line with the future land use map and surrounding property.

“These concerns and more will be addressed per the city’s guidelines during our LDP phase,” Slade said. “Because there were many concerns, many of the [Planning] Commissioners said they were

uncomfortable moving forward. I don’t believe that was fair for the sellers, as they want to sell here, and I feel like we need to follow the guidelines for the zoning and not jump too far ahead.”

The City Council indicated approval of the zoning request would be conditioned on the developer preserving the trees in the rear of the lot and increasing the minimum lot size.

They speculated that it would be difficult for the developer to absorb the costs of the intersection improvements and other requirements, especially when there would be at most eight homes to sell.

“I suspect you don’t really know what those dollars and cents really look like,” Mayor Mike Bodker said. “I’m going to want to know that you’re prepared for that, and we’re not zoning something just to find out later that you don’t have the ability to move forward with the deal, in which case the public and everyone else feels like they were kind of jerked around.”

Bodker said he does not like to defer zoning cases, because it asks the public to turn out at another meeting, but with this petition there were too many unknowns.

Online voting opens for city gateway project

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau has opened an online survey as part of a community engagement process to design a gateway marker for the city.

Once designs are approved, the art piece will be placed near the intersection of Kimball Bridge Road and State Bridge Road.

Based on input received from multiple in-person community engagement meetings and online surveys, the artist, William Massey, has prepared four preliminary sketches for the public to vote on their favorite design and give feedback on the project.

Each of the options includes aspects of Johns Creek’s history and reference to the Chattahoochee River, though they offer a range of styles, from complex and detailed, to sleek and minimalist, to more abstract.

Residents and employees who work in Johns Creek are encouraged to vote at johnscreekcvb.com/about-us/johnscreek-gateway-project.

Once voting has closed, the final selection will be submitted to the Johns Creek Public Art Board for review. Following the Public Art Board application process, the CVB and the Public Art Board will present the proposed design to City Council at an upcoming Work Session.

Creating artistic monuments at the east and west entrances to the city on State Bridge Road was the top request from the CVB when it came time hash out tourism product development spending last year. These projects are funded by the hotel/motel tax and allocated by state law for use on capital projects that

appeal to visitors.

A 2018 study by an outside travel consultant found gateways and signage was one of the key shortcomings of the city. After nearly five months of negotiations between the CVB and City Council, the council allocated $64,000 to create a single marker at State Bridge and Kimball. If the project is deemed successful, it could lead to a series of gateways around the other entrances to the city.

The visitors bureau partnered with Urban Catalyst Lab, a nonprofit that helps cities integrate art with urban planning. The CVB previously partnered with UCL to design the Johns Creek Tunnel under Medlock Bridge Road.

The same week the CVB launched the online survey for the gateway project, it also presented its 2020 tourism product development recommendations to the City Council.

The City Council reached agreed with the tourism board’s suggestions to allocate $70,000 for Phase II of the installation of the Wall That Heals, $56,000 for improvements at Autrey Mill. The council also indicated it would like to allocate some of the funds to a greenway study, while the CVB is interested in putting some of the funds to another gateway monument. This will be discussed at a future work session.

Two local military veterans inducted into Georgia Hall of Fame

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Two local military veterans have been selected to join a handful of veterans statewide who have been inducted this year into the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame.

This is the seventh year that the nonprofit has honored Georgia veterans after it was established in 2013 by the Georgia State Senate. Fifteen veterans, chosen by an independent selection committee, are inducted each November.

This year’s inductees include former Staff Sgt. Richard F. Dundon, a Vietnam veteran living in Johns Creek, and former U.S. Army medical specialist and Roswell resident Roger W. Wise, Jr. Hall of Fame Co-Director and Chairman of the Board Col. Rick White said this year’s inductees were chosen for demonstrating one of three categories: valor for heroic action in combat; outstanding achievement while in service; or significant local, state or national contributions after leaving active duty.

Wise said the nomination came as a shock.

“When I received the call from Col. White, at first, I thought he was playing a joke on me,” Wise said. “But when

Wise has kept busy after he was honorably discharged in January 1967.

Since then, he has dedicated himself to volunteering and supporting various charitable enterprises. Some of the causes he has worked with include chil-

dren’s healthcare, senior’s aftercare and veteran’s affairs.

He has been commended by former Gov. Nathan Deal, Sen. Johnny Isakson and former House Rep. Tom Price for his help in streamlining the state veteran’s hospital system.

Some of Wise’s recognitions include Outstanding Georgia Citizen in 2014, Senate designated Roger Wise, Jr. Day on March 13, 2014 and Rotary District 6900 Club Builder Award in 2015.

“I am humbled to be selected to serve with these great patriots,” Wise said. “God has blessed me in many ways, and this is but yet another blessing from Him for me and my family.”

Dundon, who was drafted in 1968 right out of college, served in the lst Cavalry Division when it was ambushed in 1969 in the Song Be Province.

“Disregarding his own safety, he crawled through enemy lines to direct accurate fire support, resulting in the retreat of hostile forces and the capture of a wounded enemy soldier who would later provide vital intelligence of enemy positions and munitions caches,” said Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame spokesperson Marilyn Weitzel. “For this feat of hero-

Local basketball teams contend with use of two different balls Players faced with use of varying equipment when season kicks off

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The basketball is the central focus throughout each local high school game, but it is easy to overlook its importance to the feel and flow of the game. That might not be the case this year.

The GHSA has permitted teams to either use the Wilson Wave ball, which has been the organization’s official ball for several years, or the new Wilson Evo NXT. The shift in equipment goes far beyond a name change. The two balls carry a price difference and have a significantly different feel. The Wave includes 24 grooves around the ball while the Evo is a more traditional, spherical ball.

The Evo will be mandatory for girls and boys basketball in the 2020-21 season, but this year, schools will have the option to use either ball, with the home team determining which Wilson model will be used as the game ball. That means players could have to contend with playing one ball during a Tuesday

night game and the other on Friday.

Drew Catlett, head boys coach of the defending Class-A Private state champs St. Francis, said he is not concerned with his players using different balls throughout the season.

“I think the guys, when they play AAU or over the summer, they might play with a Wilson, play with a Spalding, they play with different balls all summer,” Catlett said. “I think as a coach you sometimes over worry, but my own opinion is, if you can shoot, you can shoot with anything.”

However, the Knights’ coach said the cost difference did raise his eyebrows.

The Wave is $60 per ball while the Evo rings in at $80, a significant difference for a sports program that is backed almost solely through fundraising.

“That’s my only gripe with it,” Catlett said. “I bought 12 new Waves last year and 12 the year before that. I can’t just discard them. That’s a lot of money.”

Catlett said with budget restraints, he will likely have to phase in the Evo’s, and it could be 2 to 3 years before he has a full rack.

Another issue is getting a hold of the new balls. Due to a backup with St. Francis’ vendor, Catlett had to purchase the team’s two Evo’s at a retail store.

While other coaches in the state

have taken to Twitter to complain about vendor backups, that was not an issue for Chris Short, head coach of the Chattahoochee boys team.

Short has a stock of Evo’s, but he will also use Wave balls throughout the season in practice.

“We have both balls, and my plan is to infuse and work in the new ball to any situation in practice that I can,” Short said. “We are going to split time with each ball so we are acclimated so they’re not surprised in the moment.”

The Cougars’ coach said his players are split on the new ball.

“Some like it, some don’t,” he said.

“Some like the feel of it, some hate the color, we’re kind of all over the place.

The guys are not reluctant, they are more than willing to use both balls, and it’s up to me as a coach to make sure they get both in their hands.”

Short said Chattahoochee’s region, 7-AAAAAA, could vote on using one model throughout regular season region games or in the region tournament.

Catlett said Region 6-A could make a similar move.

Teams coming out of their region tournament looking to make a deep run in the playoffs will need to be familiar with the Evo. The GHSA has mandated that either ball can be used in the open-

ing rounds of the state tournament, but only the Evo will be used in the semifinals and state championships.

For that reason, the Roswell boys will use the Evo throughout the season.

“If it’s the state tournament ball, that’s what you’ll play at Roswell,” head coach Ty Phillips said.

Phillips said the verdict is still out on the Evo. He, along with Catlett and Short, said there were rashes of complaints from players, and even officials, on the Evo during GHSA-sanctioned camps in July, but Phillips said the balls appear to be more playable once they are worn in.

“The verdict is still out,” Phillips said.

“It was not their favorite ball at first, but then they adjust. In the end, it’s just playing basketball.”

All three coaches said that they will be downplaying the issue of using two balls throughout the season to their players.

“I’m not going to make a big issue of it with the players, because once you get it in their head that it’s the ball, that can affect them,” Catlett said.

Phillips said he will not bring up the topic with his players.

“It would be a mistake to make it an issue because then you get kids thinking about something they can’t control anyway,” he said.

Award-winning author to visit Barrington Hall

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The South is steeped in Civil War history, and one visiting author is providing a new angle for studying the subject.

Scott Mingus, co-author of “Targeted Tracks: The Cumberland Valley Railroad in the Civil War, 1861–1865,” will visit Barrington Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. to talk about his book and sign copies. The book, co-written with history author Cooper Wingert, focuses on the Cumberland Valley Railroad, which connected Hagerstown, Md. to Harrisburg, Pa. “The Civil War was the first conflict in which railroads played a major role.

Although much has been written about the role of railroads in general, little has been written about specific lines,” Mingus said. “Its location enhanced its importance during some of the Civil War’s most critical campaigns. Despite the line’s significance to the Union war effort, its remarkable story remains little known.”

Mingus, a scientist and consultant in the global pulp and paper industry, has written 22 books about the Civil war and Underground Railroad. His biography

on Confederate General William “Extra Billy” Smith has won multiple awards.

Mingus has written books on all three railroads that ran between Pennsylvania, a free state, and Maryland, a slave state, during the Civil War. “Targeted Tracks” is the last of this series.

The name of the book comes from the railroad’s unique position during the war.

“The Confederates attacked the CVRR three consecutive years — Jeb Stuart in 1862; Albert Jenkins, Robert Rodes, and George Pickett in 1863; and John McCausland in 1864 — making it one of the chief targets of the Confederates,” Mingus said.

Mingus’s interest in history came from his parents, including his father, who was a World War II veteran.

“From my earliest childhood, I shared their love, as have my two sons who are both college history professors,” he said.

“As a research scientist by profession, I really get into the research aspect of writing books and it was a natural extension of my interests and skills set.”

“Targeted Tracks” was written using the railway’s reports, letters and diaries from local residents, and newspaper accounts.

It’s important for people to learn about and remember such history, Min-

gus said.

“I think it is important to understand what our forefathers experienced and what the world was around them,” he said.

Appen celebrates best in business Annual gala honors readers’ favorites

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — There was dancing, dinner and air of celebration Oct. 24 as some 450 members of the business community gathered at Alpharetta’s Metropolitan Club for the seventh annual Best of North Atlanta Gala awards ceremony.

The event, hosted each year by Appen Media Group, recognizes the best businesses in North Atlanta as determined by readers. This year, more than 30,000 people cast ballots for their favorite business in any of 114 categories, from cosmetic surgery to auto service repair.

“We hold this gala every year in an effort to recognize the best businesses our communities have to offer as decided by our readers,” said Appen Media Publisher Hans Appen. “And wow, our readers had a lot to say this year. We shattered the record for total number of voters with just over 30,000 people voting.”

The reader engagement in the survey says a lot about the appreciation residents have for the high quality businesses they patronize, Appen said.

“It also says a lot about the enormous honor it is to receive one of these awards,” he said. “It’s a competitive contest, and winners should be proud of the recognition.”

In addition to the businesses recognized as best and runner-up in each category, the gala honors two businesses in premier categories.

The local franchise was honored for its popular family dining experience and its array of philanthropic efforts in the community. Those efforts include promoting local charities on its social media and championing fundraising efforts on their behalf.

“I’m humbled by this,” Ron Altman said. “For us, the privilege of being in Alpharetta and serving this wonderful community of people who like our food is just a great blessing.”

He said the most gratifying aspect is the ability to incorporate charitable campaigns as part of the business.

Terrie agreed.

“We do what we love,” she said. “We love serving the community, and I’m blown away to be recognized for that.”

The other premier award, the One to Watch Award, honored Sherri Selman and Lisa Wilson, co-founders of NexSeason Transitions, a firm specializing

One recipient, Edna Blackman, 85, received the certificate for Best Senior Activity Center for Roswell Senior Center.

“It means a lot,” Blackman said. “The award also means we appreciate the help we receive. For many seniors, this is their second home.”

Kristen Lewkowitz received the award for Best Art Gallery/Retailer on behalf of the Johns Creek Arts Center. The nonprofit also received awards for children’s

lessons and children’s parties.

“That’s fantastic for us,” she said.

“We’re a nonprofit, and the more people who can come to our facilities, the more people we can bring art to.”

Name recognition was also important to Danielle Boglione, co-founder of The Maids cleaning service in Roswell, which was honored as runner-up in maid services.

“It helps to give peace of mind to people when we go inside their homes,” she said. “There are single moms, working moms with a lot going on.”

Following the awards ceremony, the gala concluded with a dance and social.

Appen said the entire staff pitched in to make the event a success.

“It took months to prepare, and everyone pitched in,” he said. “We had some hiccups along the way, but I’m blessed to work with an amazing team, and I am proud of the end result.”

Developer plans 900-home subdivision in Peachtree Corners One of the largest residential projects in the metro area is being proposed in Peachtree Corners on 115 acres that sprawl along the Chattahoochee River. Peachtree Corners has come a long way over the last several years since it incorporated. For years it had been known as a strip of aging retail centers you had to travel through in getting from Roswell to I-85 along Holcomb Bridge Road and Jimmy Carter. But since incorporating, city officials launched a rebuild of the city that included a new town center that opened earlier this April.

The town center sits on 21 acres across from the Forum that was purchased in 2013. Following a Livable Center Initiative study, the city rezoned the property to mixed-use and approved a town center design concept in 2014.

In 2015 it signed a contract with Fuqua Development and sold the property to them in 2017, the same year of the project’s groundbreaking.

The town center included a large town green, a veterans monument, a significant amount of retail and some residential townhomes. Their plan is to also include a botanical garden in the

Since construction of the town center, the area has seen more interest from investors who want to build in Peachtree Corners. The latest is one of the largest residential plans. According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the 115-acre site is actually the old campus of the headquarters of Fiserv. The existing buildings will be torn down to make way for the residential development.

The plat has 4,000 linear feet of frontage along the river and the homebuilder said there will be sweeping views of the river.

Final plans have not been submitted, but the project is slated to include condominiums, townhomes and singlefamily homes, as well as age-restricted independent and assisted living facility.

It will be gated.

In the ABC article, Peachtree Corners mayor spoke in favor of the project.

“We want to make sure that housing for these citizens is available,” he said.

“This project will provide that housing while respecting the sensitive river corridor and tree canopy that we all love and enjoy.”

The builder expects to break ground in January with the first homes being up for sale by the end of 2020.

Ashton Woods Homes also proposed a 971-unit residential project along the Chattahoochee River just up the road in Duluth. It would sit on 145 acres off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth on property that was formerly a golf course.

According to the Chronicle, a recent proposal was to include 161 townhomes with the rest being single-family homes.

Of the 145 acres, 65 acres will be preserved as open space.

In Lawrenceville, another developer is proposing 171 homes on 32 acres on Cedars Road near Winder Highway that will include townhomes and single-family homes. And near the Mall of Georgia, another is proposing 245 homes on 58 acres off Bart Johnson Road.

While much smaller, but still large in measure of recent residential developments, another project has been proposed just up the road in Tucker. Plans have been filed for a 22.5-acre property at the LaVista Road-Midvale Road intersection, about a mile outside of I-285 near Northlake Mall. The project would include 63 single-family homes with 5.6 acres of open space.

With inventory still low, especially for houses under $400,000, there seems to be a strong market for residential construction.

For every meeting you have, you should have specific goals and objectives that will help you develop an overall agenda for the meeting.

Developing a meeting guide with an outline of the topics and questions you want to ask is a great way to prepare for a meeting.

When asking questions, it’s best to start at a high level. Your questions should be open-ended and require your customer to respond with more than a “yes” or “no” answer. As you begin to understand more about your customer’s business, you can start asking probing questions about their specific wants and needs. Asking questions about some of the issues or challenges they are facing are great ways to identify potential opportunities to help them.

Having a meeting guide with good questions will help ensure you are a good listener. By being a good listener, you are much more likely to establish trust and credibility with your customers, a requirement for doing business with them.

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — With fair weather and a new location, the Johns Creek Police Department’s annual Trunk or Treat event was another hit Oct. 23.

Held in the parking lot of the new City Hall, hundreds turned out for a night of candy, games and contests.

Each division within the police department, as well as some local businesses and representatives from the Forsyth Sheriff Department, decorated the trunk of a car. Superheroes, princesses and haunted houses were among the themes.

There were also inflatables and refreshments to entertain the attendees at

“It’s pretty fantastic seeing the community come out and enjoy themselves in a safe environment,” Police Chief Ed Densmore said. “This is the fifth one,

Each year, attendees vote on their favorite booth, and this year the decorators stepped up the competition.

“There’s an obstacle course, a maze, a lot of good competition,” Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Robin Buckley said.

Third place went to the traffic department’s “Ghostbusters” set-up, and the SWAT team earned second for their superhero decorations and costumes.
