JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police responded to a Sept. 19 dispute after a man reportedly threatened to beat his neighbor’s loose dogs with a baseball bat.

According to a Johns Creek police report, the dog owner said her pets got loose and ran into her neighbor’s yard along Whitestone Place. The 46-year-old woman told officers the man threatened to get a bat and beat her dogs, then beat her and her family members with it.

Resident falls victim to identity theft scam JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A resident of Lexington Woods Lane called Johns Creek police Sept. 21 to report a case of identity fraud.

According to police, the 64-year-old victim said someone used his personal information to acquire a credit card and a $50,000 Small Business Administration loan.

The man learned of the fraudulently activity after being mailed a past due bill for $4,031 from one of the creditors.

He got a statement from SBA on Sept.

20 notifying him of the loan, the report states.

Woman loses money in online transaction JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Fairburn woman told police Sept. 23 that she had been swindled out of $760 when she

Police said the woman was given the names of two people from whom she could buy one of the puppies and communicated with them through Snapchat.

The victim told officers one of the suspects had a heavy European accent.

She sent the purported sellers $760 via CashApp and was given the address of a home on Old Southwick Pass to pick up the puppy. But when she arrived to collect her new dog, the woman learned that the purported sellers did not live there.

Customer, shop owner settle dispute peacefully ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell police were called to an auto repair shop along Mansell Place Sept. 23 when a customer, unsatisfied with the work on her vehicle, refused to pay for $1,200 worth of service.

According to a police report, the shop owner called police when, during a verbal argument, the customer threatened to get her gun and start shooting people.

The woman refused to pay the owner $1,200 because she said he didn’t do a good job fixing her 2011 Mercedes Benz

sedan. She said she offered to give the man $500 but he refused, got aggressive and tried to block her from leaving. The woman said she threatened to retrieve her gun when the shop owner aggressively pushed her sister out of the way and tried to confront her for stiffing him on the tab, according to the police report.

The owner, 54, admitted that he did block the exits when the customer refused to pay, but he denied ever touching her. He told one officer he gave the woman her car keys back, but later told another policeman the customer took them off his desk without his knowledge or permission, the report stated.

Police told the pair that it was a civil matter they needed to handle among themselves. One day later, the man and woman did just that, according to a subsequent police report.

The business owner called the customer and offered to settle for half of the agreed upon amount, otherwise he planned to press charges against the woman for theft of services.

The customer initially refused to pay the $1,200 when police called her and said she could face charges if she didn’t make arrangements with the shop owner. But the two later settled the matter after the woman paid the shop an undisclosed amount for services, according to a police report.

Johns Creek Art Center awarded virtual programming grant

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Arts Center has suffered in the wake of COVID-19, but virtual programming has given the center hope.

In March, the Johns Creek Arts Center closed its doors and cancelled all spring classes, workshops and outreach programs. Rather than cancel the March exhibit completely, the center worked to create an online exhibit complete with music and an audio-guided narrative.

Given their success, the art center staff curated the same type of virtual exhibitions for May and June.

“The enthusiastic response to our call for artists let us know that the Johns Creek art community was alive and well and willing to adapt to new ways of exhibiting their work,” Althea Foster, the programming director and curator for the art center, said. “This platform allows us to show the incredible artwork produced by artists in our community and help create a bit of normalcy in an environment that is unlike anything we have ever experienced.”

The center transitioned to new types of programming in June with arts camps that accommodated social distancing.

The safety measures limited the number of participants and changed how the class was taught, and staff recognized from their success that virtual programming was the future of the center during COVID-19.

Showing art in the Johns Creek community is a big part of the Johns Creek Arts Center’s mission. This August, the Fulton County Art and Culture Department helped foster this mission through the Virtual Art Initative Grant. This

$11,000 grant enabled the center to continue to create virtual exhibits and workshops throughout the end of the year.

“The arts council recognized early on that if Fulton County wanted to be a vital force of arts in the area, arts programming expansion of the online delivery was key,” Foster explained.

This month Atlanta printmaker Diyah Najah opens her one woman show, “ADHD and Other Gifts,” using the virtual gallery platform, Wondergrid.

Najah will also present an artist talk and host weekly hands-on workshops every Monday in October.

This grant also gave the center the opportunity to showcase work from its own talented staff. In November, longtime Johns Creek Arts Center instructor Leslie Murphy presents a solo exhibition, “If Not For A Gun,” featuring word portraits of gun violence victims. Additionally, Keok Lim, a ceramic teacher at the center, will present her whimsical handbuilt ceramics virtually in December.

“Fulton County really stepped up and supported the arts during this horrific year,” Foster said.

City Council remains divided on mask mandate

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council and Mayor Bodker remain divided but open to ideas on the issue of a mask mandate ordinance.

During a Sept. 21 work session, council members Erin Elwood and Brian Weaver proposed a mask mandate in Johns Creek. The ordinance would require all people over the age of 12 with no religious or health restrictions to wear a mask in public places. Exceptions would apply to people while eating or drinking and when outdoors maintaining social distancing guidelines.

“This was something we thought would help to make things better to get the numbers down so we can get back to what we all think normal feels like and the way it used to be,” Weaver said. “It was not to punish anybody, not to make demands on anybody, but to do our part as a group, as

a city, just to make things better.”

Late September numbers from the Fulton County Department of Health show Johns Creek with the lowest COVID infection rate among all major cities in the county, about 1.4 percent. Only Mountain Park, with a population of under 1,000 posted a lower rate.

Countywide, the positivity rate was 3.9 percent based on tests performed from Sept. 14-27. Infection rate numbers through most of Fulton County continue a two-month decline.

Though the proposal failed to garner enough support at the meeting, Mayor Mike Bodker did not write off the possibility of drafting an ordinance in the future if needed.

“I am going to be open to continuing to monitor this as I know we all are,” Bodker said. “I don’t preclude the fact that we might have a time and a need to have this discussion and be moving forward on something.”

The COVID-19 infection rate per

100,000 residents has been on the decline since the last discussion on a mask mandate, and Bodker said he did not see the level of non-compliance to safety norms that others had cited. He added that in discussions with other local mayors, he found that they were not truly enforcing their mandates.

“I think the voluntary compliance is working here in Johns Creek,” Bodker said. “I do think masks make a difference, but I don’t think the government should mandate something unless there is an overabundant need to do so, and in this instance, I just don’t see the overabundant need at this time.”

Councilman Chris Coughlin objected to the ordinance as unenforceable and that it would actually exacerbate the problem by forcing an interaction between a police officer and someone not wearing a mask.

Coughlin also said he had performed many spot-checks and had seen 95-100 percent compliance in retail and grocery

stores. Parks were the only areas he observed where citizens were regularly not wearing masks.

Councilwoman Stephanie Endres said a mask mandate would have a negative effect on mask compliance.

“It will make many residents very angry and stop wearing them, I’ve heard from many who said that will be the case,” Endres said. “I think most people will do what’s right. Our numbers are looking great and I believe in my neighbors.”

Despite his many mark-ups on the proposed ordinance, Councilman Larry Zaprowski was on board with working toward a potential mask mandate.

“We had a lot of discussions about getting kids back in school and I think anything this council can do to promote that would be a positive step,” Zaprowski said.

The council has not scheduled further discussion of the topic, but members have indicated it could be reintroduced if infection rates climb.

Johns Creek Student Ambassadors host virtual debate

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Nine local high school students led a virtual debate Sept. 30 featuring the two candidates for the Georgia House District 50 seat.

The students, part of the Johns Creek Student Ambassadors Program, prepared questions and moderated an online debate between incumbent Representative Angelika Kausche, and former Johns Creek City Councilman Jay Lin. Student Leadership Johns Creek is a two-year competitive program that accepts applicants from the four high schools that serve Johns Creek — Centennial, Chattahoochee, Johns Creek

and Northview. In pre-COVID times, nine students from each school could be nominated for the Secretary of State Student Ambassador Program, a competition to engage civic involvement.

Although the program was canceled this year, nine local students went ahead and formed their own group, the Johns Creek Student Ambassadors Program.

Omer Mujawar, a junior at Johns Creek High School, acted as moderator for the debate and kept the candidates to time.

Acknowledging the limits of a virtual format, Mujawar said the biggest benefit was the community’s access to information.

The students posed questions related to current events like the pandemic, economy, climate change, police-violence, and healthcare and how the candidates would handle those issues in Johns Creek.

Democrat Rep. Kausche said she would continue to lead Johns Creek and represent the community. She especially focused on the issue of healthcare in the time of pandemic.

“My goal will be to continue on the path where I’ve begun,” Kausche said.

“Continuing to be your voice in the State House, listening to your concerns, representing you to the best of my abilities and talking about the issues that are

dear to all of us.”

Republican Lin said he backs small business, and the economy is his priority.

“My campaign is about preserving the American dream,” Lin said. “It is about safety, accountability and prosperity. I believe these are the issues that people in Johns Creek care about.”

Mehar Nemani, a junior at Centennial High School, helped curate and propose questions for the candidates.

She said the questions selected had the utmost relevance to the current situation of our community.

“I think it is very important for local citizens to stay informed about candidates and upcoming elections, and while many might not believe so, local government is very important,” Nemani said. “I

Janice Nam, a senior at Northview High School, said the debates are important now more than ever for for people to see what matters to their candidates.

“Personally, I love the fact that people in my community, my school even, are standing up for their beliefs,” Nam said.

“However, in order to grow, we must listen to each other. That is why I think events like our debate are so important.

We are encouraging neighbors, citizens, voters, to listen.”

Some groups already benefiting from county’s relief distribution

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — While cities await a portion of Fulton County’s $104 million in federal relief aid, some organizations operating in the same cities are already enjoying a share.

Cultural and other nonprofit groups, like Alpharetta Community Chorus, Johns Creek Symphony and Roswell Arts Fund, were part of a major allocation in August through the Fulton County Department of Arts and Culture.

The Johns Creek Community Arts Center was awarded $11,000 to foster its programs, which include online programming developed in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The Georgia Ensemble Theater in Roswell received $20,000.

Overall, the county awarded close to three-quarters of million dollars to some 62 organizations through Virtual Arts Initiative grants. Another $144,000 was awarded to individual artists.

The grants are but a drop in the bucket of what Fulton County had already allocated of its relief money.

Shortly after receiving its CARES Act

award from the U.S. Treasury Department in March, Fulton County allocated $10 million to nonprofits that specialize in providing aid to seniors, the homeless and families in need.

North Fulton Community Charities, which serves more than 4,000 families in need each year, was one of six organizations that received more than $1.5 million in aid from the county. NFCC was awarded $350,000 for its operations.

Fulton County has used these awards as evidence against the cities’ claims that they’ve been left out.

Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts fought off the charge, saying in August that the county’s donations to these organizations help residents within the cities. He said countywide efforts and funding for COVID-19 testing, meals for senior citizens and aid for small businesses benefit all cities in the county.

Mayors from the 14 cities within the county, outside of Atlanta, were not happy when Fulton County offered them $2.5 million of the $104 million it received through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act

last March. They were even less happy later that month when the county announced it had already allocated at least 80 percent of the money it had received.

The cities have since negotiated for a total of $25 million of the county’s share, and by October, most cities, including Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Sandy Springs had signed an agreement to accept.

Milton officials were meeting this week to discuss the agreement.

So far, few cities have signed without grumbling.

Roswell Mayor Lori Henry called the county’s actions “heavy handed” and declared the incident has set back relations 15 years between the county and the cities.

Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker said nearby counties like Gwinnett and Cobb took the initiative to meet with their cities first and work out a distribution plan.

“Fulton County screws all its residents equally,” he said Sept. 25, a day after the Johns Creek City Council signed the agreement.

Cleanliness of schools an issue as students return

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton Schools officials are defending the cleaning process in schools despite reports from teachers who have expressed their concerns publicly and privately.

A group of teachers at Riverwood Charter School in Sandy Springs staged a walkout last month to call attention to the issue. Teachers at other schools have commented privately they don’t think adequate safeguards are in place to guarantee safety.

One elementary school teacher notified the Herald that some teachers, fearful of going public, have taken to private online platforms where clean schools and teaching challenges have become a focal point for discussion. She said she has alerted officials about issues in her own classroom but has received no action.

Schools Superintendent James Looney has scolded teachers for demonstrating through walkouts, saying it distracts from the education process everyone is working hard to implement.

The district defends its cleaning protocols.

“The two-step process of areas being cleaned frequently throughout the day

and disinfected after students leave will greatly assist us in our continued efforts to provide our students and staff with a clean, safe and healthy environment,” said Brian Noyes, chief communications officer for the Fulton School System.

Noyes said he was not aware of any cleaning issues directly reported by staff in area schools.

The district is gradually returning more students to classrooms which requires teachers “simultaneous teach” both virtual and in-person students in their classrooms.

Although teachers have been in schools since August, students began returning in small numbers in September. Full face-toface instruction is set to begin Oct. 14.

From Sept. 14 -27 when students began returning to schools in greater numbers, the district reported 36 positive COVID-19 cases among students and staff. Exposure to positive individuals mandated 14-day quarantines for an additional 83 students and staff.

In the first month of school, 64 of the district’s 6,900 teachers either resigned or retired. That is significantly higher than the 39 separations that occurred in the first month last school year.

because Fulton Schools also had a significant drop in student enrollment from projected numbers. About 61 positions remain vacant, primarily in special education which is historically harder to staff.

To alleviate staff and parents’ concerns, the district developed a safety plan with the goal of getting teachers and kids back into schools as safely as possible.

Noyes said the district followed CDC guidelines as those plans were developed. The plan includes frequent cleaning and daily disinfection of “high touch” surfaces using products approved safe for people and the environment.

He noted teachers and staff play a key role in keeping their spaces clean and are provided products to help them.

“Custodians will disinfect many common areas during the day, but most disinfection will be done at night,” Noyes said. “Teachers and staff are provided with a general cleaner and microfiber cloths to clean with frequently throughout the day.”

One teacher confirmed she had been given a bottle of spray cleaner and cloths, but her room has not been swept since school started. Some teachers, she noted, have started bringing their own products from home, primarily cleaning wipes, to fill the gaps.

Cleaning protocol The Fulton County School System uses the disinfectant, Halt, a hospital-grade disinfectant which is certified by the EPA for “Use Against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).” Custodial teams are disinfecting areas when students are not present because disinfectants are not recommended for use by or around children.

Personal protective equipment, such as gloves, must be worn while using disinfectants. Custodians are trained on the proper use of the product. This process supplements the cleaning of “high touch” surfaces that teachers and staff provide during the day. The cleaner surfaces enable custodial teams to disinfect areas more quickly and effectively.

Noyes maintains the schools are cleaner than they’ve ever been with the combination of cleaning and disinfection.

“Studies show that microfiber cloths can remove up to 98 percent of bacteria and 93 percent of viruses from surfaces with just water alone,” Noyes said. “So, with the combination of using a peroxidebased cleaner and microfiber cloths, we are doing more to remove germs, dirt and impurities than we have in the past.”

Women stand on frontline of battle-weary workforce Workers pay dearly during time of crisis

By TIFFANY GRIFFITH newsroom@appenmediagroup.com NORTH ATLANTA, Ga. — The coronavirus has killed more than 7,000 Georgians. Many patients have taken their last breath at hospitals, without loved ones nearby. But when a healthcare professional was by their side, it’s likely that worker was a woman.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women hold 76 percent of all health care jobs. Females also hold 77 percent of social work positions, two-thirds of grocery store and fast-food jobs, and 52-percent of roles deemed essential.

The weight of the global pandemic is on their backs.

Among the women on the frontline is Darice Stein, a clinical development specialist with Northside Hospital Forsyth.

Stein said she has worn many hats since the coronavirus emerged and rapidly changed life in the intensive care unit.

Information flooded in and seemed to evolve by the minute.

“It was priority number one to ensure our staff caring for patients were safe, with proper personal protective equipment and education to arm them,” Stein said. “All the while caring for a new population of patients with a pandemic that had a disease course that is so unique and would change or decline so rapidly.”

As quickly as the virus moved, Stein

said the patient population rose just as fast.

“While other departments closed, we in the ICU and the general hospital were planning for the influx of more COVID-19 patients with preparations of increasing staffing, expanding into other floors, opening a secondary ICU to offer and staff more critical care beds,” Stein said. “Not only were our patients and families frightened, but you could also feel our staff’s anxiety.”

She said, despite their fears, the ICU staff at Northside Hospital Forsyth continued to push through, pull together, and give great care to their patients and each other.

“I am not sure I can articulate how proud I am of the ICU staff and Northside as an organization,” Stein said. “We have had our disappointments along the way, but we have also celebrated so many victories with patients since the pandemic became our new normal.”

Fatalities in the field Some in the medical field made the ultimate sacrifice while working during a pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 733 American healthcare workers have died from coronavirus as of Oct. 1. But a just released report by National Nurses United claims more than 1,700 healthcare workers have died from COVID-19. Amnesty International reports more than 7,000 have died globally.

Among those fallen professionals was

42-year-old Diedre Wilkes, a mammogram technician at Piedmont Newnan hospital.

Wilkes’ body was found at her home in March while her young child was nearby.

Emory Professor Ruomeng Cui said history is repeating itself.

“The last time we saw that was the Spanish Flu. The exact same phenomenon,” Cui said. “Nurses, they were women, who suffered more every time during crisis. More women were dying.

More women were on the frontline.”

By August, the White House declared educators among essential workers. Cui released a study the month before that detailed the damage COVID-19 had done to productivity among female academics.

“What we found, in just 10 weeks after the lockdown, although the total research productivity increased by about 35-percent, female academics’ productivity actually dropped by as much as 18-percent relative to that of male academics,” she said.

The study began in May, two months after lockdowns began. It looked at multiple

Trouble on the home front Cui was inspired to conduct this study after witnessing her homebound female colleagues distracted by household and family responsibilities during meetings, but not her male colleagues.

She said women falling behind in academia is dangerous.

“Female faculties might be innovative in certain areas or aspects,” Cui said. “If their potential, their talents are limited, that will definitely be harmful for the society in terms of pushing out innovative ideas and work.”

The disparities continue on the frontline when it comes to compensation, as well. That’s according to the National Women’s Law Center. Their research shows female grocery store workers earn an average of $3,000 less annually than their male counterparts. Female registered nurses earn an average of $65,000 annually, while their male counterparts earn $71,000. There are similar wage gaps for childcare workers, home health and personal care aides.

To take some of the burden off female frontline and essential workers, Cui said things need to change. She said domestic responsibilities must be divided, and employers should offer childcare support, parental leave, evaluation adjustments and better compensation.

Cui said a lot of work remains on the home front and in the workplace. But, she is seeing improvements.

“People care more and more,” she said. “More organizations and institutions are advocating for equity, diversity and inclusion. I think that’s really a good message. But it’s just so sad that we have to fight for things that are so obvious.”

That’s quite an accomplishment. To what do you attribute your continued success?

Dr. Taylor: Thank you Alyssa! Well, as I’ve said in the past, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to our patients’ healthcare.

Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions.

We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or compels us to do additional research, and Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating on our patients’

behalf. I believe that comes through. All of that, and my awesome dad jokes are a big hit. I’m a father of three boys ages seven, five and two, so I have plenty of time to practice my material.

Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, especially how nice the patients are to laugh at his jokes. Our team really is wonderful. We have experienced and caring team members. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic.

Alyssa: Kathryn and Dr. Taylor, how is everything going in this odd Covid time?

I believe Kathryn joined the practice in March? I bet that was an interesting time to expand?

Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic provider and is knowledgeable and experienced in dermatology.

Most importantly, our skillsets really complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice has been on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling and pain, and Kathryn has years of experi-

ence performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is an expert Botox® and filler injector. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments. Covid was inconvenient but the slowdown also allowed us to make sure Kathryn’s integration to the practice was seamless.

Alyssa: Well I think that’s enough serious business for now. I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better.

If you won the lottery tomorrow what would be the first thing you did after you cashed it?

Brent: I would probably pay off the mortgages of my family and all my staff. And I would buy some new socks because mine are pretty sad right now.

And some chocolate chip cookies.

Kathryn: Flee the country and not tell my husband. No, seriously, after working so

Premier: Continued from Page 10 hard to put myself through college and my medical training, I would love to set up an educational fund for young adults from my hometown in Michigan so they could receive higher education and not have to take half of their adult life to pay it off.

If you could immediately become fluent in something, what would it be?

Brent: Italian. Feeling like a local in a foreign country has to be fun, and I think Italy tops my list.

Kathryn: Spanish. I was able to apply a lot of my “Splanglish” while living in South Florida, but Dr. Taylor puts me to shame when he is able to communicate fluently, and I only understand a portion of what he or my patients are saying.

What were you like in high school?

Brent: I was very smart. And very naive.

I had very little time for much besides keeping my nose to the grindstone but was still happy and people still joke that in the back of my head I seem to have The Girl From Ipanema playing on repeat.

Kathryn: I moved halfway through my freshman year, so it took me a bit to find my place. I was outgoing and took part in Cross Country, Basketball, Track, several academic and service clubs, played piano and worked as a server at a restaurant. I also enjoyed a lot of time on the beach of Lake Superior (cold, but true) Who is someone you look up to?

Brent: My dad. Sounds cliché’ but it’s true. My dad is just such a wonderful man. He’s kind and patient and incredibly intelligent. He has worked extremely hard to accomplish everything he has in life and really instilled in me a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. I am beyond fortunate for my family.

Kathryn: My Grandmother. She grew up on a dairy farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and taught school in a one room schoolhouse until she went to nursing school in Ontario in her 20’s. She didn’t marry my Grandfather until her late 20’s, had her children in her 30’s and worked as a nurse in Detroit until her 70’s. She always had a positive outlook on life and a laugh that would turn into a “hissing fit” because of her asthma, which made all around her giggle.

What do you do in your free time?

Brent: I use those ten seconds to fantasize about having free time. I’m only half-joking. Hobbies are a bit on pause with three boys seven and younger.

Every moment my wife and I have we try and do something for the kids. The park.

Hiking, playing baseball in the backyard, reading together, teaching them to ride a bike, fishing, playing piano. I don’t have

HEALTH & WELLNESS • Sponsored Section children that will just sit and watch a movie. I don’t know if it’s their age but they are just nonstop. My wife refers to them as tiny tornados. When I do have time again, I’d like to resume flying.

I have my pilot’s license and love the beauty of the world seen from the air.

Kathryn: Traveling if I have that much time. Otherwise running, golf, hiking, kayaking and family and friend time.

Honestly, I love taking my dog for a walk on the greenway too!

If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Brent: Is this my opportunity to plug Outback Steakhouse and hope they mail me an honorary-Aussie free-food-for-life card?

Kathryn: Soup. My Dad was our primary cook growing up and never wastes food.

You can make soup out of anything.

What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Brent: Watching fish swim around a coral reef in a sea so warm that you forget you’re even in the water.

Kathryn: Oh, this is a fun question.

Something to challenge myself. Going to a new place. Seeing something out of the ordinary. The last perfect trip I had was in Costa Rica, where I kayaked at night in bioluminescence water, climbed a 200 foot tree, hiked through the rain forest and swam in the river (yes, I got ticks). I even tried surfing and ate a termite! Flights and weather were perfect.

Locals were amazing. Can’t wait for the next perfect vacation.

What is something embarrassing about yourself?

Brent: Um, I never remember birthdays or anniversaries etc. Not because I don’t remember what day they are but because I don’t ever know what date it currently is. Oh, and I once was backstage a Miley Cyrus concert. It was a friend’s fault I promise!

Kathryn: I used to be amazing at remember peoples’ faces and names. Now I’ve turned into what I used to make fun of my mother for. Sigh.

What is a long-term goal?

Brent: More than anything I want my kids to grow up to reach their potential and be happy.

Kathryn: Ditto to that. Happiness and health for my children and never stop learning.

Now playing: Local cinemas reopen doors, shift strategies

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA — Cinema lovers have had plenty miss the last six months, the thundering boom of the sound system, the flash of colors from the large screens, the smell of buttered popcorn and, maybe, the stickiness of a soda-splattered floor.

While the theater-going experience is still far from the status quo of the first months of 2020, several local cinemas have come back online with new protocols. At least one has altered its business model.

The latest move theater to reopen is CMX CineBistro in Forsyth County’s Halcyon, which first opened seven months before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Though the cinema’s parent company, Cinemax Holdings USA Inc., filed for bankruptcy in April and the Brookhaven

location has shuttered its doors permanently, the Halcyon location has weathered the economic storm for now.

“Since the day the movie theaters began to close back in March, CMX Cinemas has been working on reopening plans, safety protocols and sanitation measures,” Matt Russell, CMX Cinema’s vice president of operations, said.

Russel said the company is also grateful to bring back “many” workers to its staff now that doors have reopened, and the company is confident that Halcyon will continue to be among the top-performing CMX locations in the country.

Ahead of CineBistro’s reopening, several other national theater chain locations in the north Metro resumed operations, but all are taking precautions against COVID-19 beyond those required by the state.

The AMC cinemas in Cumming and Alpahretta’s North Point Mall have reopened. All AMC locations are requiring staff and patrons to wear masks at all times except when eating or drinking. According to the company’s website, masks will also be available to purchase for $1.

Regal Cinemas, with locations on Medlock Bridge in Johns Creek, at Avalon in Alpharetta and in Perimeter Pointe in Dunwoody, is also requiring all customers wear masks at all times except when eating or drinking. Soda refills will include a new cup, locations with bars open for walk-up service only, and service has been suspended for diners, restaurants and in-theatre ordering at locations which offer those amenities.

Roswell’s Movie Tavern is also requiring facemasks.

Aurora Cineplex on Commerce Parkway in Roswell has shifted strategies. The facility’s 10 digital projection screens have remained off since March, but the company has started to hold “pop-up” drive-in screenings.

Though theaters have resumed screenings, an almost full-stop on movie production has left cinemas with slim pickings to showcase.

In response, most have taken to showing classics or films that had previously had their theatrical runs.

New protocols to alter look of high school basketball this season Season changes include elimination of jump ball

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — The sports landscape has been altered by the coronavirus pandemic, and those impacts will extend to high school basketball in Georgia this year.

The Georgia High School Association announced last week it is rolling out a string of safety protocols for the 2020-21 season.

The rule changes and suggestions are being implemented to “decrease potential exposure to respiratory droplets by encouraging social distancing, limiting participation in administrative tasks to essential personnel and allowing for ap-

propriate protective equipment.”

Perhaps the most noteworthy change is the elimination of a jump ball to tip off each contest. Instead, the visiting team will be awarded possession of the ball to open the game. In overtime, a coin toss will determine which team will be on offense to begin the period.

Another element affected by the new rules will be throw-ins. Instead of standing beside a player on the sideline or end line and handing over the ball, the official will remain six feet away from athletes and bounce them the ball ahead of handing it over. Officials are also permitted to use an electronic whistle and wear gloves.

Also included in the updates is a change that allows both officials and players to wear cloth facemasks. The

GHSA’s outline also directs schools to “consider requiring coaching staff and other bench personnel to wear face coverings while on the bench.”

Though not required, schools are encouraged to add additional rows or chairs between the end line and coach’s box to allow for social distancing in the bench area. This is similar to other suggestions given by the GHSA for expanding benches/player areas in football, volleyball and softball.

Another suggestion from the GHSA is to add another row of chairs for the bench and to place benches opposite spectator seating if possible.

Pre-game conferences will be limited to referees and the head coach from each team, and post-game handshakes are prohibited and to be replaced by

each team lining up on their respective free throw line to wave to the opposing team in a show of sportsmanship.

The home team will also be responsible for ensuring the game ball is sanitized prior to the game, during timeouts and between quarters.

While teams adjust to the new protocols, some local programs will also face a new play landscape with the addition of a shot clock in select games.

In July, the GHSA opted to join a short list of state high school athletic associations to allow for a shot clock.

Under the organization’s plan, the 30-second shot clock will be phased in over the next three seasons. Beginning this year, a shot clock may be used in select holiday tournaments and showcase games.

George Cekis, 78, died at home, after long-term heart and lung problems. George is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret M. Sheridan Cekis, two daughters, Elaine and Rebecca, three sisters Rose Cekis Stonis (Oak Forest IL), Penny Cekis Fabus (Lockport IL), and Patricia Cekis (DeMotte IN). He was preceded in death by his parents Anthony George Cekis and Emily Toupal Cekis, his brother Robert Cekis, and one sister, Charlene Cekis Stoika (Athens TN).

George graduated from Harrison HS (1959) and Roosevelt University (B.A. Chemistry, 1970), both in Chicago. His professional career extended from Amoco Chemicals in from Chicago, to Amoco
