Thieves take jewelry in residential burglary

Man loses money to online ticket scam JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police Sept. 17 after he was swindled out of $1,300 for tickets to a football game.

The man said he had used PayPal to purchase tickets for the Florida vs.

Miami college football game. He then traveled to Florida with some friends to attend the game.

When the man went to pick up the tickets, he was told that they had already been sold to another person.

The man attempted to get a refund but was unsuccessful. He was advised

by PayPal to file a police report.

Man loses thousands after fake check cashed JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police Sept. 19 to report that someone had cashed a $3,600 fraudulent check using his name.

The check had been cashed on Sept. 1 and had been dated July 20. It was made out to a name the man did not recognize.

evening, and about four hours later, police received an alert from the home’s security alarm. Police met with the family to walk through the house. The rear glass door had been shattered, and at least $10,000 worth of jewelry was missing.

Man’s credit report reveals several fraudulent accounts JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police Sept. 17 after he realized he had become the victim of identity fraud.

The man said that the previous week, he had been alerted that someone had stolen his identity. He conducted a credit report on himself and found numerous accounts opened fraudulently under his name.

The accounts had more than $4,500 worth of fraudulent charges on them.

The victim contacted the credit reporting agencies to report the fraud before calling police.

Leaf blower stolen from company truck JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man called police Sept. 19 to report his landscaping company’s truck had been burglarized.

The man said employees transport equipment in a towed truck. The truck and equipment were last seen secured at 2 p.m. that afternoon in a parking lot on Old Alabama Road.

About two hours later, the owner noticed that an $800 leaf blower was missing.

Restaurant equipment stolen during replacement efforts JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating an incident in which old restau-

rant equipment at the Autobeli’s on Old Alabama Road was stolen.

Restaurant staff had replaced a commercial oven and refrigerator on Sept. 7.

The old equipment was placed outside during the installation.

Later that day, staff were unable to find the old equipment. They valued the stolen items at $1,000 total.

Car burglarized during park trip JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a Sept. 18 incident in which a car parked at the Barnwell Road national park area was burglarized.

The vehicle owner said he parked his car at 8 a.m. to go on a hike. When he returned four hours later, he saw that his rear passenger side window was broken, and the driver’s door handle lock was damaged.

Police said it appeared that the suspect had used a prying tool of some sort to gain entry.

The victim said the keys to another car were taken in the burglary.

Wanted person found during police traffic stop JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested a woman Sept. 17 after they were alerted that she had a warrant out for her arrest.

Officers pulled a car over that evening on State Bridge Road because of expired registration.

While talking to the driver, police were alerted about a warrant from Duluth for probation violation.

The woman, 44-year-old Aaliyah Butler of Stone Mountain, was arrested without incident.

Thief steals vehicle parked along roadway ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta man called police Sept. 17 after his car was stolen during a roadside stop.

The man had hit something in the road while driving and stopped on Mansell Road to inspect his car. He left the keys in the car, unlocked, while he checked for damage.

At one point, the man saw someone open his car and drive off. The suspect was last seen traveling toward Ga. 400.

Johns Creek passes 2020 budget

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council passed a 2020 fiscal year budget that anticipates a property tax increase for next year.

The council approved the budget 6-0, with Mayor Mike Bodker absent due to illness, at its Sept. 23 meeting. The vote was made with relatively little debate after details were hashed out at a special called meeting Sept. 13.

In Johns Creek, the fiscal year runs Oct. 1 to Sept. 30. The property tax rate, or millage rate, is typically set in August to fund that year’s budget.

Bodker first presented his proposal for the 2020 budget Aug. 19. That proposal relied on $4.7 million rolling over from the current fiscal year to fund stormwater infrastructure improvements in the coming year.

The problem: that same night the council set the 2019 property tax rate at 3.552 mills, which reduces the amount anticipated to rollover into next year by about $2.4 million.

The council cut about $2.8 million from the mayor’s initial proposal, bringing the total budget to $62.5 million. But to stay balanced, the budget anticipates a 2020 property tax rate of 3.986 mills, an increase of about .44 cents for every $1,000 of taxable valuable.

“It feels good that we cut the property taxes at the last opportunity,” Councilman John Bradberry said, referring to the Aug. 19 action on the mill rate.

“We’re also realizing that we’ve basically put ourselves in a position where it’s going to be tight this time next year. We’re basically going to need $2 million in extra revenue to come in through sales tax or other avenues if we are to avoid the need to raise the millage rate.”

Mayor Pro Tem Lenny Zaprowski admitted they “may have overcut” the 2019 tax rate and could be forced to raise taxes next year in order to fund necessary stormwater maintenance and complete the promised fire station.

“I think next year we’re going to have some eye opening,” Zaprowski said. “My concerns are we made some promises last year … Hopefully, we’ll get that fire station built because I think that people in that part of the city deserve it and that’s our job.”

Councilwoman Stephanie Endres, who proposed lowering the 2019 tax rate, had a different take.

“Why I’m excited about this budget is … we’ve changed our process for our millage rate to a look back because we establish our millage rate 10 months into the [fiscal] year,” Endres said. “Last year, as a standalone year, we looked at that and said we have $4 million left over. We should give that back to the residents.”

Because the city uses conservative estimates when creating its budget, revenue typically exceeds expectations and projects sometimes come in under budget. In 2019, revenue exceeded expectations by $3.2 million.

If 2020 outpaces predictions by a similar margin, a tax increase could likely be avoided, but that revenue is dependent on the strength of the economy and other factors that are outside the city’s control.

“At the end of the day, we could have a tax increase if that’s what’s needed to be done, but I have confidence based on trending that’s not necessarily going to be the case,” Endres said.

At the special called meeting, the council found $2.8 million in expenditure cuts by eliminating funding for access control, repairs to Seven Oaks Dam, match money for construction on Abbotts Bridge and parks data connectivity.

Additionally, the council reduced funding for facility improvements to the new City Hall and for stormwater infrastructure assessment and repairs.

The council made plans to reevaluate City Hall improvements, stormwater repairs and Abbotts Bridge six months into the fiscal year when more is known about the cost of those projects and the city’s revenue for the year.

Cities at odds with Forsyth over McGinnis Ferry widening Johns Creek, Alpharetta balk at county proposal

BY PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County is facing pushback from its partners in a multi-million-dollar project to widen McGinnis Ferry Road.

Both Johns Creek and Alpharetta have signed on to help fund the project, but they are balking at terms of an agreement with Forsyth County that, among other things, calls for the cities to commit more money than they originally planned.

McGinnis Ferry Road runs along the southern border of Forsyth County, with Alpharetta and Johns Creek hugging parts of the highway to the south. Even with two lanes in some spots, it serves as a major eastwest commuter route from Gwinnett County west through North Fulton.

It is destined to become even more popular due to the state’s plan to add an interchange at Ga. 400.

The widening project covers a little over 4.5 miles from Sargent Road in Johns Creek to Union Hill Road in Alpharetta.

Plans call for widening the route to two lanes in each direction with a 20-foot-wide raised median, shoulders and sidewalks on each side.

Both cities had set aside funding from the 2016 transportation sales tax and other local sources to help with the project. But neither city has committed anywhere near the $9 million Forsyth County is asking from each.

Forsyth committed $18 million back in 2015 — about half the bill — based on the project’s original estimated cost of around $35 million. The county is now placing a price tag of $60 million on the project and is anticipating some help from the state, possibly as much as $10 million.

Cities asked to pay more So far, Alpharetta has upped its commitment to $6 million for its share, although that figure has not been formally approved by the City Council.

The city had originally set $4 million as its portion.

Johns Creek has committed $5.5 million, all from transportation sales tax dollars.

Alpharetta wants nothing to do with the Forsyth proposal as it stands now.

“It’s not going anywhere,” Alpharetta Mayor Jim Gilvin said.

Alpharetta City Administrator Bob Regus said everyone was probably surprised by the increase in cost, includ-

ing Forsyth County. But, he added, any time there are three separate entities sharing costs and obligations on a road project, things get complex.

“It just takes time to establish a relationship with our counterparts and dig into the issues we need to dig into,” Regus said, adding that Forsyth County is a much bigger government than either of its two municipal partners. “I don’t want to speak for Johns Creek, but I think we both struggle with the increased ask.”

Another element in the current Forsyth proposal would allow the county to acquire or condemn property in Johns Creek and Alpharetta at the cities’ cost if the cities’ delay in acquiring the property would cause the project to fall off schedule.

“When we do respond to Forsyth, we want to be in charge of acquiring our right of way,” Regus said. “We want to maintain our relationship with our citizens, even if it leads to eminent domain of their property. The city will not give that away.”

Alpharetta has another meeting scheduled with Forsyth officials later this month.

For its part, Johns Creek has submitted a counter proposal back to Forsyth County. It calls for breaking the project into phases.

The city’s preferred plan would be to widen a 0.7- mile section, roughly onethird of the total run through Johns Creek, from Sargent Road to Seven Oaks Parkway. With a total estimated cost of $5.1 million, Johns Creek would pony up about $1.2 million. The Johns Creek proposal does not address who pays for utility relocation and stream mitigation along the route for an estimated cost of $1.6 million.

Forsyth County officials say they would need to iron out how much the county would be on the hook for regarding utilities and stream mitigation.

They also say they are not anxious to see the project broken up into phases.

Forsyth wants to move forward Speaking at a recent County Commission meeting, Forsyth County Attorney Ken Jarrard said the county wants to move beyond the design and planning process and get the ball rolling.

“If you look at what Johns Creek is proposing, it’s not embracing the whole project,” Jarrard said. “We would like a renewed commitment to the entirety of the project, not just commit to a phase of the project. We want them to embrace the entirety of it.”

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Voters will decide who will fill three Johns Creek City Council seats Nov. 5.

In Johns Creek, all City Council members represent the city at-large, and terms are four years. Voters can check their registration and locate their polling place at mvp.sos.ga.gov.

Throughout October, The Herald will be profiling all candidates for the three seats up for a vote this November.

Four candidates are running for Post 4, including incumbent Chris Coughlin.

Here is a closer look at those candidates.

Kent Altom Kent Altom is a real estate litigation attorney at The Gilroy Firm and a business law professor at Kennesaw State University. Altom promises to lead with a professional approach to government to end the infighting ALTOM within the City Council.

“Now is the time to end the infighting among our current council members,” Altom said. “With my leadership and conflict resolution experience, I can bring the two factions together and demonstrate the value of working together.”

Altom is looking to the future with fresh ideas to improve Johns Creek.

“It’s time for fresh ideas in Johns Creek. We need traffic relief and new business growth while maintaining our city’s residential integrity.”

Altom has lived in Johns Creek since 2005. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia’s Board of Governors representing Fulton County, is an officer of Real Property Law Section’s Executive Committee and belongs to the Lawyers Club of Atlanta.

“As a recognized leader in the legal profession in Georgia, I hope to bring the right temperament, knowledge, and skills to help Johns Creek be an ‘exceptional’ place for both residents and businesses,” Altom said.

Altom’s top priorities would be to end the infighting among the current City Council; to strengthen the city’s alliances with surrounding cities, Fulton County and state officials; to ensure that Johns Creek is a place where businesses want to invest and to ensure that it has all of the aspects of a “first class” City, including transportation, parks and recreation and performing arts.

Altom and his wife, Charla, an elementary school teacher, have been married 22 years and have one daughter. The Altoms volunteer at North Point Community Church in the preschool ministry.

Marybeth Cooper Marybeth Cooper, a Johns Creek resident for over 11 years, says she is running because she cares deeply about Johns Creek and wishes to contribute to the continued success of the city.

COOPER She believes in smart, properly planned development, continued parks and recreation development — utilizing the parks bonds to full potential and finding and implementing proven solutions for road congestion.

In the BACKGROUND community, Cooper has been an active member since moving to Johns Creek in 2008. She has volunteered at Ocee Elementary, Newtown Tots, Ocee Park, Saint Brigid Catholic Church, and Bridgeway Christian Academy.

She has also volunteered with the American Heart Association, Make-AWish Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Citizens of Georgia Power — a corporate volunteer organization.

For more than 20 years, Cooper has worked for a Fortune 200 company in areas including information technology, operations, engineering, accounting, finance and budgeting.

Until resigning to run for City Council, Cooper was the president of the Johns Creek Community Association and has served on its board of directors as Zoning Chair since 2017. She is currently vice president of her homeowners association, having previously served as president for five years.

Cooper is a proud resident of Johns Creek with her son David, an eighth grader, in the Ocee community area.

He worked on a tax fund investment policy that has led to $1.2 million extra revenue this year, led a sustainability study on new city hall that will save approximately $100,000 annually in maintenance and operations.

He led the partnership with Waze to bring discounts to riders in Johns Creek and Alpharetta and the implementation of a walk to school programs.

“Despite these successes, I still have more to accomplish, and that’s why I’m attempting to finish what I started,” Coughlin said. “I want to continue to be a voice of the residents to retain the high quality of life in our community.”

Coughlin said if reelected he would work to implement the parks plan and pursue a greenway along the Chattahoochee river from McGinnis Ferry to Abbotts Bridge.

Coughlin resides in Johns Creek, along with his wife, Nicole, and three

NEWS children. He works as a senior research scientist developing pre-employment simulations to predict employee performance.

He is active in the community as a volunteer involved with North Point Community Church’s foster support groups and the Johns Creek Mental Health Wellness task force.

“I have a breadth of experiencing in analyzing budgets and making key investments for my clients,” Thomas said.

Thomas volunteers with the local nonprofit, Lighthouse Family Retreat, which helps families and children with terminal cancer, and also works to help veterans as they transition from the battlefield to the business world.

“My commitment to helping those in need fuels my desire to serve on the City Council and ensure that our future is brighter and more secure,” Thomas said.

If elected, Thomas said his top priorities will be fiscal accountability and government transparency. He also said the city needs to develop a comprehensive strategy to grow responsibly, to improve response times for police and fire and to expand parks.

“We need to ensure that as more businesses and families move into our community, we have the infrastructure in place to handle the increased capacity on our roads and in our schools, and we need to enhance safety and our quality of life,” he said.

Secretary of State opens probe into Fulton elections FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Secretary of State’s office has opened an investigation into Fulton County elections procedures after last week’s theft of two express poll books used to check voters into their respective polling locations.

“Security should be everyone’s top priority,” Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said. “It is unacceptable that bad-actors entered a polling location under the cover of night and were able to steal critical elections machinery.”

The location of the theft was at a Fulton County polling precinct located at the Grove Park Recreation Center at 750 Frances Place NW in Atlanta.

Fulton County quickly replaced the two stolen Express Poll Books and the Atlanta Board of Education District 3 election was able to proceed as normal. No voter was impacted.

The express poll books are among the older, dated technology used alongside the current voting system and contain voter information such as names, dates of birth, addresses and driver’s license numbers.

Georgia Secretary of State investigators will release details as they come available.

Students in the Fulton County School System are graduating in record numbers from the district’s 19 high schools, but the goal of reaching a 92 percent graduation rate still remains a district priority.

Data released by the Georgia Department of Education calculated Fulton’s graduation rate at 87.2 percent for the class of 2019, a 0.4 percent increase from the previous year and among the highest rates of metro Atlanta school systems.

Fulton’s graduation rate also exceeds the state average by more than 5 percentage points.

“The data shows that our district made progress on this front last year,” said Fulton Superintendent Mike Looney. “We intend to celebrate the hard work of our schools. We intend to remain laser focused on ensuring that this trend continues so that we can witness all of our students walk across the high school stage with a diploma.”

Statewide, the graduation rate of 82 percent is an all-time high for Georgia since 2012 when federal law adjusted how graduation rates could be calculated. The previous formula did not factor in drop-outs or transfers, leading to artificially high graduation rates.

Among the 19 high schools across Fulton County, all but five increased their graduation rate over the previous year. In North Fulton, only two schools, Milton and Johns Creek high schools, posted slightly lower graduation rates

from the previous year.

Among the top performers, Chattahoochee High School led the pack with a graduation rate of 97.9 percent, followed by Cambridge (97.6) and Northview (90).

Fulton’s 5-year Strategic Plan, first passed in 2012 and renewed in 2017, sets a high bar for the district’s graduation rates. In 2012 the goal was a 90 percent graduation rate; in 2017 it went to 92 percent.

“While Fulton’s graduation rate of 87.2 leads our metro peers and there is much to be celebrated, we have not reached our Strategic Plan 2022 target of 92 percent,” said Cliff Jones, Chief Academic Officer. “This gap shows that there is work to be done.”

This year, all eight traditional high schools in North Fulton exceeded the 90 percent mark for the first time.

State Schools Superintendent Richard Woods said the work the Georgia Department of Education is doing to customize education for each child is paying off with higher graduation rates and overall achievement.

“Moving forward, we must continue to focus on offering a relevant education and preparing every child for their future – not a one-size-fits-all system that sends every student in the same direction,” said Woods.

He noted Georgia is seeking flexibility from the federal government to develop an alternate diploma for students with significant cognitive disabilities, which may impact how graduation rates are calculated in the future if the waiver is approved.

Roswell craft brewery reps talk industry history, trends

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The craft brew industry had little to no foothold in the North Atlanta market 20 years ago, and now, it’s become a burgeoning business.

Roswell alone is now home to three breweries: Gate City Brewing Company, From the Earth Brewing Company and Variant Brewing Company.

Gate City Brewing Company Founder Pat Rains and Variant Brewing Company Business Office Manager Michael Curling attended the Sept. 26 Roswell Rotary Club meeting at Roswell Area Park to speak about their industry.

The national economic impact of the craft brew industry last year, according to Rains, was $79.1 billion, including $5 billion in direct wages and benefits.

“This industry is burgeoning here, and it’s doing that and growing across the country,” he said. “The economic impact of all the breweries is pretty staggering.”

And the impact is also felt by Roswell’s tourism industry, Rains added.

Both his and Curling’s breweries encourage visitors to stop, shop and visit other places within the Historic District.

“It’s a trickle-down effect,” Rains said.

Rains, a native of Portland, Ore., was inspired to help found Gate City Brewing Company when he moved into Roswell and was unable to find craft beers similar to the ones he enjoyed in the Northwest. So, he decided to try his hand at making his own.

Curling and the founders of Variant City Brewing had similar experiences.

Unlike other industries, Rains said, the craft beer industry tends to be collaborative and, for whatever reason, philanthropic.

“One of the most unique things about this industry is the collaboration and how friendly everybody is,” Rains said.

“I had heard about it, but until I got into the industry, it was something I couldn’t really explain to somebody coming from a business background… When you’re

not competing, it makes it easy to have a brewery and do good things.”

Curling said the breweries will often share ingredients and tips and, most recently, host walking tours to promote business in both companies.

Both breweries are also frequently involved with local nonprofits and allow these groups to host meetings and special events within their space.

“These guys both have it in their DNA to serve the community through their breweries,” said Roswell Rotary Club President Gordon Owens.

Both companies were attracted to Roswell because of its community, and they wanted to continue the legacy by giving back, Curling said.

Most recently, Gate City Brewing Company has partnered with End Human Trafficking Now to release the Freedom Fighter IPA to raise funds and awareness about human trafficking.

Buckhead CID makes private transportation public With app-driven ride-sharing programs like Uber and Lyft woven into the fabric of our communities, and selfdriving cars on the horizon, the Buckhead Community Improvement District Geoff smith inked a contract last Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com week to incorporate the systems into a public-like transit service.

The Buckhead CID approved a one-year contract for $607,000 with Via Transportation Inc., a service more focused on the ridesharing aspect and typically confined to specific areas.

In this case, Via has partnered with Mercedes-Benz Vans to provide vans within the Buckhead CID. Like Uber and Lyft, a rider would use an app to request a ride. Within minutes, a van with other passengers would arrive nearby and take you close to your destination.

From a transit perspective, it’s a great alternative to providing your own system because there is really no upfront cost. It’s almost like subbing out a transit system to a private company. The system is meant to compliment the free Buc Shuttle service that runs through the corridor, but has more flexible routes and can get passengers to that “last mile.”

The comment could mean that one day the Via service, if it works well, could supplant the current bus system.

One of the biggest knocks on MARTA these days is that it doesn’t get riders close enough to where they need to be.

Or there are too many connections. You might take a bus to the North Springs MARTA station, for example, but if it takes you into town, you might still have several blocks to walk after getting off.

Many riders then either get on a busline, or Uber of Lyft their way to their final destination.

Intown there is much more connectivity and MARTA has more train stops and bus routes that a worker wouldn’t have too much trouble say stepping out for lunch and not having to drive to get there. But out in the suburbs, there is nowhere near the network of public transportation. I can imagine the folks in Alpharetta taking note, and maybe the North Fulton CID thinking that this could be a great way to get workers around the different nodes. Certainly it would increase value for the various business parks if it was free and easy to get from work to Avalon or downtown Alpharetta for lunch.

The $607,000-contract that the Buckhead CID agreed to sign certainly shows that the service isn’t free. It’s free to the riders, but someone has to pay for it. And you know who that is? It’s the commercial property owners in that district. A CID, or community improvement district, is a geographical area

where all of the commercial property owners agree to pay an added tax every year. That money goes into an account where a board made up of those property owners, and usually some members of the community, decide how the money is spent within that corridor. The funds are typically used to improve and maintain infrastructure, like building better looking sidewalks, improving infrastructure, or installing and maintaining landscaping. All of these things improve the corridor and thus improve a potential tenant’s desire to want to be in that corridor. With increased demand, it increases the values of those properties within that corridor. So by paying the added tax, the commercial properties owners are increasing the values of their properties as well as the incomes generated by their properties.

Certainly the businesses in the Buckhead CID will have an advantage over other companies located elsewhere, especially when it comes time to recruit talent if they can show them a free ridesharing service to move more easily throughout the corridor.

So how was the rock collecting trip?

A few weeks back I talked about egg cartons. Egg cartons? Yep. They are the perfect thing for holding rocks if you happen to go rock collecting, which is what I then proceeded to do.

STEVE HUDSON I want to tell you Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net about the rock trip, but first I want to share a little background.

I grew up looking for rocks. My dad and my granddad were both into rockhounding, as it’s called, and we spent many hours doing rocky things — talking about them, researching them, looking for them, and washing them in the kitchen sink to the unending dismay of my long-suffering mother.

Most of our rock collecting was in northern Georgia, but sometimes it was farther afield. I remember one memorable trip in east Texas, hunting petrified wood on the stockpiles of a sand and gravel plant on the Brazos River west of Houston, where the owners understood the rockhounding affliction and were sympathetic. The plant’s machinery did the hard work for us, dredging gravel from the river and washing it and piling it up in towering mounds. All we had to do was to look through the stuff in the piles.

That kind of rock collecting can be hard on the back, but the pain was worth it because a surprising lot of the stuff in those piles was agate, jasper or petrified wood. There were fossils, too, including things like mammoth teeth.

I still have the grapefruit-sized mammoth tooth I found there that day, and looking at it now takes me right back to those exceptionally enjoyable days under the blazing east Texas sun.

It takes me back to another thing, too: a time when it was easy to find places to look for rocks.

Back when I was young (“In the previous millennium,” as my oldest son once so delicately put it) people were much more inclined to let you look for rocks on their land. Usually all you had to do was ask.

Today, it’s different. Posted signs are the norm. Land is closed to public access even if you ask (sad but not really surprising in these lawsuit-prone times), and it gets harder and harder to find places to do a little rock collecting if you are, like me, a rule follower at heart and try to follow the letter of the law.

Nonetheless, a few weeks ago I gathered up my rockhounding tools and set off to see what rockhounding adventures might await. It would be a pilgrimage of sorts with return visits

to some of the favorite sites from, as they say, those halcyon days of yore. It promised to be great time.

How did it turn out? Well…

Yes, I did find a few good rocks. I picked up a handful of those fossil crinoids I mentioned, and I found a nice brachiopod shell fossil too. I also found a nice piece of lace agate, a specimen made even more appealing by the fact that it was covered on one side with a universe of tiny quartz crystals a millimeter or so long.

So I found some rocks.

But the biggest thing I found was a plethora of collecting sites that are, alas, collecting sites no more.

“Plethora” is a neat and often misused word. People often use it to mean “lots of” or “abundant,” but what it really means is “a negative excess” — as in a plethora of mosquito bites or a plethora of taxes.

What had happened to those rock collecting sites? Some were still there but were guarded by those NO TRESPASSING signs. Others were overgrown (it doesn’t take long for a patch of dirt to get completely overtaken by underbrush). And still others were simply not there. One, a hillside where I used to find nice jasper, had been replaced by a school. Another, where I used to find colorful agate, had metamorphosed into a shopping center parking lot.

I guess it’s true. You really can’t go home again.

Still, persistence is rewarded. I drove a lot of backroads and looked at a lot of roadcuts, among them one that provided the crinoids and another that gave me the little shell fossil. I even knocked on a total of five doors to see if I might gain access beyond those foreboding yellow signs. Everybody I spoke to was nice about it, and one was even apologetic, but most still said “no.”

I did, however, get one “yes” — and that’s where I discovered that piece of crystal-bedecked agate.

Not long after picking up that piece of agate, I decided to call it a day. On the way back to the truck I stopped to thank the landowner and to show him my discovery. He allowed as to how his grandkids would probably like to look for rocks too. That was all it took to get us talking about grandchildren, which are a great part of God’s plan and which really do make exceptional rockhounding buddies.

Eventually it was time to go. Before I left I gave him the piece I’d found so those grandkids of his would have an idea what to look for.

“That’s mighty nice of you,” he said.

“And you just come on back any time.

Maybe bring those grandkids of your own too!”

How about that. Maybe you can go home again, at least one in a while.

“Did you hear me?”

“Buddy,” I heard someone say, “Buddy, let me go get him and see if he can find it.”

“If I can’t find it it aint there.”

Buddy walked off.

A few minutes later, out of the dark we spotted a skinny kid in jeans walking toward us. Couldn’t have been any older than we were. But he ignored us and went over and spoke with Bob. Then he looked over at the Galaxy.

“Who is that?” I asked.

“It’s the owner’s son,” Bob replied. “If he can’t find it, no one can.”

I turned and looked at the skinny kid as he seemed to wade into the engine of the Galaxy. He never looked under the car, never looked under the dash — just went straight to the engine and leaned way in, so far that his arm and half his skinny body seemed to disappear into the mass of oily steel and wire.

“No way,“ I thought to myself. “We are so toast.”

He twisted his body and reached even farther into the engine then rapidly withdrew his hand, holding — OK, fuses. He then proceeded to explain that in this model year, the fuses in the Galaxies were located ….” Bob rushed up to him and slapped him on the back.

were still at least a dozen or more years away. Our “cell phone” back in the day was a quarter and a pay phone.

The old man at the station walked up.

He wore a greasy blue jump suit with the name “Bob” stenciled above the pocket.

“You fellers need something?”

After giving us a disparaging look when we told him we couldn’t find the fuse, he opened the car door and began searching up under the dash. After about five minutes, he stood up, scratched his head and then his stubby unshaven face, and announced that, “Dang if I can find any fuse. Maybe this thang don’t got one. Let me go get Buddy.”

Buddy was the mechanic›s boss, middle aged, almost clean, white T-shirt, anxious and bothered to have been asked by Bob to do something. As Bob faded away into the background, Buddy marched straight to the now cold Galaxy and went straight to the hood, opened it, and disappeared into the engine space for what seemed like a long time. He bumped his head on the hood standing up with a jerk, then scowled and went into the garage and came back with a gurney – the kind you lay down on with wheels so one can roll under things like old Galaxy’s looking for fuses. At last he emerged and announced “Damn car ain’t got no fuse and I’m done. Now, you boys git. Tired of wasting my time. Git back on the road before I call the law.”

“Mister, if we get back on I-95 we’re going to jail.”

We made it to the coliseum while the warm-up band was still playing. Then, we watched The Who perform every song off “Live a Leeds,” all of “Who’s Next” and all of “Tommy.”

We watched Keith Moon fall off his drum stool, backwards. Loon-Moon they called him. He lit up every stage he ever played on.

Roger Daltry threw that microphone around and whirled it over and over through the air as he belted out “ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.”

And Pete Townshend wound up like a straight-armed pitcher and whirled his arms at his guitar over and over, as cords crashed through everything that was in their way. The band didn’t just play. They raged and we watched. Then they lay us down.

“See me, Feel me, touch me, Feel me.

“Listening to you I get the music, Gazing at you I get the heat, Following you, I climb the mountain….”

That was 49 years ago. Last night, I watched 76 year old Townsend do it again. Nothing had changed. Same rage.

Same threat. Same madness. Same rebel. Same angry guitar. Same promise.

After the opening set, Townsend took the mike and breathed heavily and sighed.

“We played as many songs for you from Tommy as we could without breaking my heart.”

And I know he did. You could tell. It was one of those moments of clarity and courage that is so rare today.

And I know that it probably wasn’t so, but the magic of that promise he shared, for some reason, made me think of that skinny grease monkey from a lifetime ago and his mastery of an old Galaxy on an interstate in the middle of the night and of a crew-cut state trooper who for some reason, wasn’t out to conquer or punish, and of four kids hell-bent on arriving at the concert in time to see this British band.

And what do you suppose that the name of that grease monkey was? Well, Tommy?

“Ever since I was a young boy I’ve played the silver ball From Soho down to Brighton I must have played them all But I aint’ seen nothing like him In any amusement hall That deaf dumb and blind kid Sure plays a mean pin ball.”

Road: Continued from Page 4 commissioners that allowing Johns Creek to segment the project might encourage the same approach from Alpharetta.

Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said that skyrocketing costs for road projects has been a fact of life for years. There is nothing wrong with asking each city to pay a fair share of those costs, she said.

County Manager Eric Johnson urged caution.

“I’ve been here two years, and when I started, there was no commitment by either jurisdiction for $9 million,” he said. “Starting with a $9 million assumption and going north with that is not going to necessarily get us any place.”

Johnson recommended the county look to the Atlanta Regional Commission or GDOT to advise the jurisdictions about their commitment.

“If they want to take either city to the woodshed, that’s not really something that we need to witness,” Johnson said.

In the long run, he said, if all jurisdictions move to fund acquisition of all the right of way, chances increase that the state may step up with more help. If the county keeps asking for $9 million from each city, the project will go nowhere, he said.

Commissioners have directed the county attorney to continue fashioning an agreement they can present to Johns Creek and Alpharetta to get work underway as soon as possible.
