Police investigate threats from purported drug lord JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A 23-year-old Johns Creek resident filed a report Sept. 14 after receiving threatening messages demanding a $2,500 “fine” from someone claiming to be a cartel boss.

According to police, the victim said the random message came from an unknown phone number. The suspect included the victim’s name, age, current address and even knew his family members’ names.

The message sender threatened to send “hitmen” to harm the man’s family if he didn’t pay the $2,500 fine within two hours.

“I hope you pay me for the sake of you and your loved ones,” it stated. “I already investigated everything about you and your family, and my men are ready to go to your home address or work address and do the work if you do not answer. Just see how I do to the people who play with the girls of

The text also included photos of an apparent murder victim. The man told police he had no enemies who would threaten him or his family.

Alpharetta police are investigating a Sept. 2 report of a similar text sent to an immigration worker. The suspect in that incident claimed to be part of a criminal organization called “MY GIRLS.”

Man cited for harassing fitness club employees JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Roswell man was arrested Sept. 15 for allegedly making threatening phone calls to his former gym.

George DeAndre Cannon, 35, was taken into custody at the Medlock Bridge Shopping Center along Medlock Bridge Parkway and charged with harassing phone calls.

According to police, he became a member at the Crunch Fitness gym in January and had his membership revoked March 31. A manager at the Crunch Fitness in Johns Creek said Cannon called that location and several others in Atlanta. She told officers he called so much after his membership ended that corporate executives issued him a “cease and desist” letter.

Police did not indicate exactly why Cannon called so often.

DUI Arrest Antoinette Coleman Pettiford, 53, of Falls Watch Circle, Alpharetta, was arrested Sept. 16 on Old Alabama Road for DUI, improper turning and failure to maintain lane.

Landlord reports threats during eviction process

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — No arrests were made when police were dispatched to a dispute between a landlord and a tenant who was being evicted from a Park Chas residence Sept. 14.

Officers stood by during the eviction. The landlord stopped them as they were leaving and reported that the tenant threatened him as he was locking the front door of the house.

The landlord said the man yelled to him “your days are numbered.” The tenant, however, told officers the comments weren’t directed at the landlord.

He said he was yelling at his dog, which wouldn’t stop barking, because it was being obnoxious.

There were no witnesses to corroborate either story. Police ordered the men to part ways and explained the process for getting a restraining order to the landlord.

Johns Creek County teacher charged with sex Johns Creek COUNTY, Ga. – A Johns Creek County middle school teacher was arrested in the Florida Panhandle on Sept. 20 for allegedly exposing himself.

Coby Shane Rosson, 35, of Douglasville, was charged with two counts of indecent exposure. The Johns Creek County School District lists Rosson as a physical education and health teacher at DeSana Middle School in Alpharetta.

According to an arrest report from

the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a beachfront vacation rental condo in Fort Walton Beach after two guests spotted Rosson standing nude in a secondfloor window that overlooked the pool.

ROSSON One of the complainants provided a cell phone recording that showed Rosson

allegedly committing a lewd sex act while looking at people in the swimming pool. The other witness, a woman floating in the pool, told officers she looked up and saw Rosson nude in the window staring at her.

There were children in the pool at the time, according to deputies.

When questioned, Rosson told officers he was drinking and he and his wife hadn’t had much “alone time.” He later said he “made a bad choice” and claimed the alcohol factored into his

Mayoral candidates meet in first public debate Issues include stormwater, town center, public safety

By SYDNEY DANGREMOND sydney@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Roughly 100 residents and local officials were on hand at The Standard Club Sept. 23 for the first formal City Council candidate debate of the season.

Mayoral candidates Brian Weaver and John Bradberry primarily discussed issues on which they generally agree, addressing the town center plan and stormwater. The two diverged on some past issues regarding public safety and department leadership.

Since the city’s inception in 2006, residents and officials have discussed a potential town center for Johns Creek reminiscent of those in surrounding Alpharetta and Duluth. Fifteen years later and the wheels are officially in motion. A plan for the town center will be presented and discussed at the city planning commission’s next meeting.

Weaver and Bradberry both expressed support for the town center during the debate Thursday evening, but they had differing visions for what role the center would play and what exactly it should include.

Former City Councilman and retired Johns Creek Police Maj. Weaver painted a picture of a town center featuring a five-star hotel, retail shops, a performing arts center, housing and a park.

Post 3 City Councilman Bradberry’s vision was similar, picturing restaurants and retail, the same performing arts center, a place to “grab a beer and watch the game,” but with less housing and no mention of a hotel.

Bradberry shared his anti-density views, saying an increase in housing and affordable housing in particular would change the character of the city and overwhelm local school districts. He said he viewed the town center more as an amenity for existing residents rather than a draw for newcomers.

Conversely, Weaver left the door open for many forms of new housing within the town center, but he said it would be up to residents and the City Council to make a final determination.

Bradberry also said he would like neighboring Johns Creek County to foot a portion of the Johns Creek town center bill. He provided no details on how he would negotiate an agreement.

Both candidates discussed the issue of stormwater, claiming progress

with the recent formation of a stormwater utility.

The stormwater ordinance allows the city to collect fees from residents based on the amount of impermeable surface they have on their property.

It also awards credits based on runoff mitigation efforts. Both candidates supported the measure when it passed on June 21.

Weaver called the issue of stormwater “horrific and devastating,” but said he was proud of the recent efforts of the city to quell the rising waters. He specifically mentioned the utility and the recent hiring of three people who will focus solely on stormwater management and improvements.

Both candidates said they consider public safety a priority for the city and their individual campaigns.

During the debate, candidates discussed the city’s settlement with former Police Chief Chris Byers and its impact on the department and the city.

An investigation concluded that Byers had violated the city and departments’ sexual harassment and conduct policies. He then settled with the city for $325,000 in August 2020.

Bradberry voted in favor of the settlement and defended his position during the debate, citing advice from the city attorney and a desire to help the city move on.

“The real thing that was invaluable was that the police department was able to heal, we were able to move on and we were able to get permanent leadership,” Bradberry said.

Weaver, who voted against the settlement, said it had the opposite impact on the city’s police department.

“You talk about healing in the police department,” Weaver begins. “That was not healing. That was one of the worst things that could’ve happened because it ripped the police department apart.

He continued, saying the correct decision would’ve been “showing [Byers] the door,” instead of settling.

When asked how he would help integrate the police department with the community, Weaver referenced a program he called Johns Creek Explorers and a tuition reimbursement program for Johns Creek public safety officials.

Bradberry lauded recently appointed Police Chief Mark Mitchell’s efforts towards “community policing.”

Pandemic-related issues also were addressed during lightning-round por-

tions of the debate wherein candidates had to provide yes or no answers to questions.

Asked whether they would support a mask or vaccine mandate if advised by public health officials, Bradberry said he would not support either, and Weaver said he would support both.

On Sept. 30, all nine City Council candidates vying for Posts 1, 2, 3 and 5 are scheduled to debate at The Standard Club. The event will begin at 6 p.m.

Grand jury indicts former Roswell officer for assaulting, tasing handcuffed suspect

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A Fulton County grand jury has indicted a former Roswell Police officer, Daniel MacKenzie, who is accused of using excessive force during an arrest in 2018.

MacKenzie was charged with seven counts, including aggravated assault, making a false statement, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, battery, simple battery and two counts of violation of oath by a public officer.

The indictment states MacKenzie unlawfully committed an assault Oct. 27, 2018, when he tased and punched a suspect who had already been handcuffed and placed in the back of his police vehicle for attempting to break into several cars in the parking lot of a Roswell apartment complex. The suspect is identified as Mario Godoy of Alpharetta. He was 32 at the time.

In the incident report, MacKenzie admitted to tasing and punching the handcuffed man. However, the indictment states MacKenzie made a false statement when he wrote that he had done so because Godoy had been violently thrashing and attempting to get into the driver’s seat of his police vehicle during transport to a nearby hospital.

The Roswell Police Department’s use of force policy prohibits officers from using a taser on a handcuffed/secured person unless there is “overtly assaultive behavior that cannot be reasonably dealt with in any other less intrusive fashion,”

the indictment states.

The Herald submitted an open records request Sept. 16 for the bodycam footage of the incident, but the request was denied.

“The current District Attorney’s administration has invoked the exceptions in O.C.G.A. 50-18-72(a)(4) regarding the evidentiary video footage, in order to preserve an unbiased pending prosecution,” Roswell Police spokesman Tim Lupo said. “As a result, we will not be able to release that video evidence at this time.”

Following the incident, the Roswell Police Department conducted an internal investigation and commissioned an audit of its police department by an outside agency. It also placed MacKenzie on administrative leave without pay.

The audit found the department’s force is under-represented in women and minority officers. It also found members of the minority community felt intimidated in their dealings with police.

Around the same time as the investigation was being conducted, the Fulton County District Attorney dismissed Godoy’s charges, including criminal attempt to commit entering an automobile, criminal trespass, loitering and prowling, willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer and interference with government property. MacKenzie resigned from the Roswell Police Department soon after.

As of Sept. 17, a warrant has not been issued for MacKenzie’s arrest.

The Fulton County District Attorney’s Office did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Johns Creek seeks to hold tourism agency accountable to Sunshine Laws

By SYDNEY DANGREMOND sydney@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek officials are drawing a line in the sand with the city’s convention and visitors bureau.

The organization has been accused of not abiding by Georgia Sunshine Laws.

The Johns Creek CVB’s compliance with open meetings and records laws has been under scrutiny since early 2020.

While council members consider an amended agreement with the JCCVB calling for more transparency, Councilwoman Stephanie Endres has gone a step further calling to end the agreement entirely.

“They’ve been violating the Sunshine Act for two years now,” Endres said.

The agency’s current agreement with the city expires in December but includes an auto-renewal clause if neither party takes action to terminate.

Earlier this year, the city amended its contracts with economic development entity Johns Creek Advantage and the Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce.

Staff recommended the city update its agreement with the Convention and Visitors Bureau as well. The tourism organi-

zation has had only one agreement with the city since its inception in 2008. The agreement was amended once in 2017, but no other changes have been made.

Based on the format of updated agreements with the other entities, Assistant City Manager Kimberly Greer drafted a new contract for the JCCVB which was shared with the organization and returned with comments.

In a memo, Monica Gilroy, counsel for the JCCVB, called the proposed agreement “punitive” and “restrictive” and advised her client to decline it out of hand.

Among the new items the city proposed were an indemnity clause and a seven-day termination period for the contract.

At a Sept. 13 work session, council members directed Greer to abandon the proposed new agreement and to suggest amendments to the existing contract.

With the exception of a one-time grant of $16,500 from the state to help aide with pandemic-related loss, Greer said, the JCCVB receives all of its funding from tax dollars collected by the City of Johns Creek through its hotel/motel tax.

Per Georgia Code, municipalities that collect a 7 percent hotel/motel tax, like

Johns Creek, are required to provide 39.3 percent of the collected funds to tourism initiatives.

Additionally, Georgia law stipulates nonprofit entities that receive more than one-third of their funds from taxes must abide by the state’s Sunshine Laws, which cover open meetings and open records.

These laws guided several of the council members’ proposed amendments to the agreement including Councilwoman Erin Elwood’s suggestion that members of the JCCVB be required to receive training on Sunshine Laws at least once every other year.

Elwood also suggested that members conduct all business using organization emails rather than personal accounts.

She said she would not support automatically renewing the existing contract without including the Sunshine Law stipulations, and she raised the possibility of dissolving the agreement with the JCCVB and transferring their work in-house to the city’s economic development director.

Councilman John Bradberry said he was not in favor of terminating the relationship with the JCCVB yet. He also suggested that the organization hold their meetings at City Hall.

Other amendments in the most recent, proposed agreement include a requirement to provide audited annual financial reports within six months of the end of the previous fiscal year, a 60day agreement termination period and an indemnity clause.

Greer was scheduled to present the amended agreement to the City Council for consideration at the Sept. 27 work session. If the agreement receives council consensus, Greer will then pass it on to the JCCVB, and the arbitration process will begin.

In a memo to members of the City Council, Endres cites incidents from Nov. 13, 2019 to June 23 of this year which she alleges prove conscious noncompliance with the Georgia Sunshine Laws by the JCCVB. The city’s standing contract with the JCCVB stipulates that if the organization is not in compliance with city ordinances and state laws, it will be in breach of contract, and the termination of the agreement could be pushed through immediately.

Endres told the Herald that she will argue the JCCVB has committed such a breach of contract.

“Are we a nation of laws or not?”

Endres said.

As a testament to our focus on quality, we were the first practice in the Eastern United States in 2019 to incorporate a new artificial intelligence (AI) program to diagnose significant diabetic retinopathy sooner than most of our ophthalmology colleagues. This FDA approved retinal photo AI read achieves 87% sensitivity and 90% specificity in finding this potentially blinding diabetic eye disease compared to an average of 41% sensitivity with board-certified ophthalmologists.

We were also the 2nd practice in the U.S. to start diabetic neuropathy ultrasound treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy pain and numbness that has shown amazing results. We offer this service in our Suwanee, Duluth and Gainesville locations.

Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic

and subsequent Delta variant, safety for our patients while delivering excellent healthcare has been our passionate goal.

We were one of the first primary care practices in our area to adopt car visits and telemedicine visits in mid-March of 2020 to minimize our patient’s exposure to Coronavirus during their visits. All sick patients are evaluated in their car and tested for COVID-19, strep throat, or flu if it is appropriate, or evaluated by a telemedicine visit to avoid the spread to other patients. Only well patients and employees are allowed in our office after they pass a symptom screen. Masks must be worn, even if you are vaccinated and social distancing is enforced. Intensified cleaning protocols are in place.

Patients are placed in a private exam room as soon as possible after arrival.

Employees wear appropriate personal protection equipment (PPEs) to avoid contracting COVID-19, and employee testing and quarantining is expedited if the need arises.

Extended office hours starting at 7:00 AM Monday through Saturday help give our patients the flexibility they need in scheduling appointments.

We also offer clinical research opportunities at our location through Herman Clinical Research. Many diagnostic tests are performed in our office, too such as ultrasounds, ECHOs, nuclear stress tests, lung function tests, dementia screenings, and lab draws to increase convenience for our patients.

Each year, we are given 365 days to make a difference in the lives of others and in our local community. For Village Park Milton Flourish Leader, Cameron Hand, each day is an opportunity to add purpose, connection, and unexpected happiness into the lives of the residents he leads at Village Park.

With a positive attitude and a willingness to jump in where needed, Cameron began his Village Park career several years ago at sister community, Village Park Alpharetta. Serving in various roles while earning his degree at Georgia State University, Cameron’s passion and unique ability to build authentic relationships with people of all ages led him to his current role. As a Flourish Leader, Cameron is guiding an innovative Memory Enrichment Program designed to help residents with early stages of memory loss maximize their health, happiness, and independence. Held in small group settings of 10 or less, the Flourish Engage Program is a structured 5-day-aweek program that includes a range of gross motor, therapeutic, nutritional, and social activities both on campus and in the greater Alpharetta community. It intertwines education, art, and social events to keep Flourish Engage members connected.

Cameron’s dedication, compassion, and innovative ideas have expanded the Flourish Engage Program’s success, making it a truly life changing experience for residents and their families.

Keeping open communication and involvement with families is especially important to Cameron.

Throughout the month, he sends emails with photo albums and descriptions (some of which are pictured here) to Flourish families, keeping them informed of their loved one’s adventures. The daughter of one Flourish member shared her experience when she received the first weekly recap email from Cameron.

She said it brought her to tears to see her dad so happy and surrounded by friends, especially when he had been so withdrawn prior to joining the program. She looks forward to each and every update.

While the program was originally designed for individuals who are in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, residents from the entire Village Park community have embraced the program.

Cameron shared how Flourish Engage has expanded into something that everybody wants to join, “I feel like it is growing into something for all people who need something more to do or people that need more encouragement to participate in activities.”

Cameron is often seen in the morning encouraging residents to come together for new adventures, singa-longs, or a simple walk through the community. His regular Flourish team of six residents look forward to the new adventures each day holds. Cameron’s daily activities, conversations, and support provides Flourish Engage members with a constant friend.

The intergenerational friendships formed between Cameron and members of the Flourish crew have generated countless heartwarming moments.

While they are multiple generations apart, the relationship

has built a bridge between current technologies and songs of the past for daily sing-a-longs as they drive to their next destination.

“Early on, I bought a FM transmitter that allows me to play music through my phone and onto the bus,” Cameron shares. “One of my favorite moments is when I play old music and everyone on the bus sings along to the songs.”

It’s ideas and moments like this that have built lasting impressions. Art workshops, dancing sessions, and friendships have improved mental and physical wellness among residents at Village Park Senior Living. As in years past, I decided to sit down with Dr. Brent Taylor and Kathryn Filipek, PA-C to get their take on their success and to learn a bit more about them.

Alyssa: Hey you two! Thanks for meeting with me again. Winning the Best Dermatologist and Best Vein specialist for four years in a row means you must be doing something right! To what do you contribute your continued success?

Dr. Taylor: Thank you! Well, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to their healthcare. Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions. We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or when a case compels us to do additional research.

Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating and advocating on our patients’ behalf. I believe that comes through.

Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, our team really is wonderful. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic.

Alyssa: Dr. Taylor we all know that you are a board-certified dermatologist, and a fellowship trained Mohs surgeon.

There is no doubt of your ability to skillfully handle dermatology and skin cancer patients. How many surgeries have you performed now?

Dr. Taylor: Oh, probably over 10,000, but more important than the number is the type of cases that we are treating. I believe that we are one of the only practices in the state of Georgia that performs true Mohs surgery for melanoma on the face. Many of the surgeries that we perform are truly lifesaving, and I am proud of the type of work that we perform.

Alyssa: How does varicose vein treatment fit into your practice and what advancements did Kathryn Filipek bring?

Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic and knowledgeable provider.

Most importantly, our skillsets really

complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice is on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling or pain, and Kathryn has years of experience performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is a truly outstanding injector of Botox® and cosmetic fillers. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments.

Alyssa: Well, I think that will help our readers understand more of what helps you both win Best Of year after year. But, as is now tradition, I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better.

When you started working at Premier Dermatology, what surprised you?

Brent: The administrative side of running a practice was more complicated than I had anticipated. I was not wearing rose-tinted glasses when we opened, but electronic medical records, government reporting, and the insurance-side of medicine all were more challenging than I expected. I want to thank all the patients who put up with the hiccups in the first two years for their understanding as we were working out some of the kinks.

Kathryn: Prior to joining Premier Dermatology in early 2020, I had spent almost 19 years working in larger dermatology practice settings. In starting here, I was pleasantly surprised by the “family” feel of the practice and not only how close the staff were to each other, but how close some of the patients were to my current coworkers. It is comforting to be a part of a true “work family.”

What are your pet peeves?

Brent: I think most of my pet peeves involve reckless or aggressive driving.

On the road, people all too often act like they see cars as obstacles rather than as fellow travelers.

Kathryn: Expecting instant gratification without the willingness to do the work. I believe hard work is often necessary to achieve your goals. This is something I tell my kids about homework and good grades, as well as my patients who often require a regular routine to maintain or improve their skin conditions.

If your childhood had a smell, what would it have been?

Brent: Blueberry pie and fresh cut grass. My grandfather had a blueberry and Christmas tree farm and my mom is a fantastic baker. I am beyond lucky to have been able to play outside all day, explore the farm, catch various critters

then come inside to homemade desserts.

I had a fantastic childhood.

Kathryn: Basically, the outdoors in Michigan. Nose-closing crisp air in the winter, water (from the snow melting) in the spring, fresh grass and dirt or sap on my hands as a kid, and leaves in the fall (which basically ended in September for me.)

What is the most ridiculous outfit you’ve ever worn?

Brent: I once won a Halloween contest by dressing up as a bag of Jelly Belly jellybeans. My neighborhood Costco gave me a huge clear plastic bag, and I punched holes in it for my arms and legs and filled it up with dozens of different color balloons then taped a Jelly Belly logo across it. My costume was the hit of the party, and nobody could get past me because I was seven feet wide.

Kathryn: Anything in the 80’s. Don’t even ask about my hairstyle. Perms rocked!

Lastly, if you could tell your 16-yearold self something, what would it be?

Brent: To not put too much stock in

timelines. I was raised very traditionally, and I thought that I was going to meet my wife in college, get married right after we graduated then start a family a few years later, and it made me worried when I hadn’t met the right person by the time that I expected. My advice to the teenage me would be to just pour yourself into positive and worthwhile activities and that the result would be becoming who you are supposed to and meeting who you are supposed to all in its own time.

Kathryn: Stop stressing. You’ll make it happen. I was so focused on my future, worrying about not achieving my goals, and how I was going to put myself through school that I didn’t stop to enjoy being 16. In hindsight, I realize that having a bit more faith would have gotten me to the same endpoint without all of the pressure I put on myself.

He had dreams of leaving as a young kid to pursue his interests in the Arts. Moving to Los Angeles at the age of 23, he got involved in the entertainment world engaging in the Fine arts, Photography and Acting in California. While he was exploring these crafts, he would pay the bills by bartending. As an artist by nature, he found that bartending is a great creative outlet and creating the “Wow Factor” that people enjoy in craft cocktails quickly became his passion.

Moving to Alpharetta six years ago proved to be a great decision after meeting Chef Francois Duquette at Flatlands Bourbon and Bayou. With Chef’s approval, the owners of Flatlands, Jodi, Courtney and Vinny Chieco, hired Joe to concept the bar program and open the new Cajun-style restaurant in 2016. Joe says, “Teaming up with Chef Francois and the Chieco Family was a perfect match to start my cocktail creations in a full-service restaurant. They gave me creative freedom to do what I wanted with the drink menu.”

Two years later, after Flatlands’ success, the old Mercantile building located at 20 N. Main St. in Alpharetta became

available to rent. With the team already in place, they decided to start a new venture to showcase their great food and exciting cocktails in an old historic building. They called it Mercantile Social,

which opened in August of 2018. They have been thriving in the newly developed downtown Alpharetta business district ever since. Joe added, “It’s great to be part of this incredible community and see

it grow throughout the past few years.”

The Waterfalls Trail Last week we took a trip to Cloudland Canyon, the centerpiece of the state park of the same name up in northwestern Georgia near the town of Rising Fawn. We checked out the STEVE HUDSON West Rim Trail, Get Outside Georgia, an easily accesaa4bw@comcast.net sible trail that offers spectacular views and as little or as much hiking adventure as you want.

By way of review: The West Rim Trail is a “lollipop” trail, consisting of an approach trail (the stick of the lollipop) with a loop trail (the lollipop itself) at the end. It’s great, and it’s one of my favorites.

It’s also the gateway to another of my favorite trails – the so-called Waterfalls Trail which carries you to the park’s two major waterfalls, Hemlock Falls and Cherokee Falls.

Ahh…the waterfalls trail! On the park’s trails map, it’s just a short little dashed line. A short trail to two nice waterfalls! How short? Only two miles round trip – not much more

than a stroll around the neighborhood, and completing it is one step toward earning membership in the Canyon Climber’s Club, a Georgia State Parks program for folks who love hiking. It all sounds relaxing, doesn’t it?

Well….

What the map doesn’t tell you is that there is a LOT of elevation change along that little dashed line. From top to bottom, and depending on exactly how you count it, the trail descends between 800 and 900 feet.

For the sake of conversation, let’s call it 850.

Eight hundred and fifty feet!

“That’s a lot of elevation change,” whisper my knees.

To put 850 feet in perspective, do a little math and put it in terms of stories, as in stories of a building. The all-knowing Interweb tells me that one story is about 10.8 feet. So do the division. You’ll get 78.7. That means that you’ve got almost 80 stories of descending to do on the way to the bottom of the falls trail…plus another 80 or so stories of ascent to get back to the top at the end.

Make no mistake: This is a strenuous trail. If you’re not sure about your physical condition you might not want to try it. Take this seriously.

And then there’s the sign you see before you begin the descent.

“ATTENTION HIKERS,” it says, in big ol’ capital letters. “BE ALERT FOR FALLING ROCK IN CANYON.” The sign points out that the canyon is a work in progress, which is another way of saying that rocks will do what rocks will do. “It is possible that occasional rocks and debris will fall from the canyon walls,” the sign points out helpfully.

“Please be aware of this possibility as you hike in the canyon.”

“Enjoy your visit!” the sign concludes.

Undeterred, and with no attention to the increasingly plaintive pleadings from my knees, I set out.

The Waterfalls Trail departs from the “stick” portion of the West Rim lollipop trail and wastes no time showing you what you’re in for. It consists of a series of short, sharp descents interspersed with lots and lots and lots of stairs. How many stairs? The official number is about 600, but I think it may be closer to 50,000 or maybe a million. “Lots and lots and lots” sums it up pretty well.

The route is unmistakable and easy to follow, though some of the “trail” portions are rocky. As you descend, you’ll often have canyon wall close on one side and not much but treetops and air on the other, with wooden railings for good measure. At one point an enormous mass of rock completely overhangs the trail; that one’s a popular resting spot, especially on the way out of the canyon.

Interspersed among the sections of dirt-and-rock trail are those inescapable sections of stairs. Descending them works on your knees (and ascending them later on works on everything and certainly takes care of your cardio workout for the day).

But it’s worth it. Stick with it, keep going, and pretty soon you’ll come to the left-leading spur which takes you to Hemlock Falls. This waterfall plunges over a lip of rock into a broad plunge pool, and you can enjoy the view from one of the boulders along the pool’s edge.

From Hemlock Falls, backtrack to the main trail and continue your descent into the canyon. Eventually, you’ll come to a small platform and a sign directing you left (to Cherokee Falls) or right to the Sitton’s Gulch Trail, another Cloudland Canyon State Park hiking opportunity.

For now, turn left toward the falls.

This spur ends at an observation platform that gives you a great view of Cherokee Falls plus a comfortable bench where you can rest for a while.

It’s also a good place for a snack – in my case, those beloved sardines and crackers.

Eventually, inevitably, you’ll need to call it a day and begin that long, long ascent back to your car. Sure, it’s a lot of steps. But if the 84-year-old greatgrandmother I met on the trail can do it, so can you – and so can I. Yes, I did it. And you can bet I’ll do it again.
