JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A customer shopping at a local Goodwill recently told police a man accosted her for not wearing a face mask.

The incident occurred Aug. 31 outside the thrift store’s Jones Bridge Road location. The victim, a 56-year-old Alpharetta woman, reported the incident to Johns Creek police two days later.

She told officers a man standing behind her in line at the checkout followed her outside and accosted her in the parking lot. The woman described the unidentified man as a 5’7” white male with a slim build of about 150 lbs. She said he confronted her as she loaded items into her trunk, yelling at her for shopping without a face covering, according to a police report.

The woman alleged she told the man she met the store’s “mask exemption” and asked him to leave her alone. But she claimed he became even more agitated, and he levied “bizarre” and “threatening” insults at her, the report states.

Police investigate report of shots fired at residence JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A 38-year-old Johns Creek man was cited for disorderly conduct Sept. 4 after police responded to a report of gunshots fired outside his home on Colony Glen Drive.

According to a police report, the homeowner told officers he fired his weapon twice into the ground from his front porch to scare off a guest who became belligerent and refused to leave his residence. The homeowner claimed he never pointed the gun at the guest, a 39-year-old Lawrenceville man.

“There are no exemptions,” the man said, according to the woman’s statement. “So, you think it’s OK for humanity to die so you can live? You have the right to live?”

She said he went on to yell repeatedly, “You are trying to kill humanity, and I am trying to save humanity.”

The man eventually walked to his car. But the victim alleged he returned moments later and parked his dark-colored sedan directly behind her vehicle, preventing her from leaving as he got out of his car and continued his tirade.

The woman told officers she took out her cell phone and tried to snap a picture of the man’s license plate. She was unsuccessful. But the photo attempt spurred the man to leave, according to the report. He got back into his car and sped out of the parking lot, the woman told officers.

The woman notified store employees who failed in attempts to identify the man through security surveillance and store records, according to the police report.

DUI and Drug arrests Jerry Jon Taylor, 51, of Hudson Square, Alpharetta, was arrested Aug. 31 on Abberley Lane for DUI, failure to maintain lane and duty upon striking fixture.

Austin Robert Gilles, 28, of Amberton Close, Suwanee, was arrested Sept. 1 on Jones Bridge Road for DUI and following too closely. fired the gunshots, the report stated.

No one was injured during the incident.

Computers, equipment taken in office burglary JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police were called to investigate a burglary at a children’s dental office on Old Alabama Road, Aug. 31.

Workers at the clinic found several items missing from desks and shelves, according to a police report.

The report indicated a commercial alarm from the office was reported to the Johns Creek Police Department just after 9:45 p.m. On Aug. 30. Surveillance footage showed two suspects at that time pry their way through the front door with

a crowbar. The burglars spent about 10 minutes inside the building, collecting several items, according to the report. They failed in an attempt to pry their way into the manager’s office, the report stated.

Among the items stolen were Apple iMac computers valued at $2,000 apiece, an electric toothbrush valued at $190 and a thermal electric thermometer valued at $100, police said.

Homewoner reports theft of patio furniture items JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police responded to a call of furniture stolen from the back patio of a home on Donnington Drive Sept. 4.

Police discovered signs of forced entry in the patio area. The 36-year-old homeowner alleged that his soon-to-be ex-wife was the culprit, according to police. He told officers he and his wife are going through a bad divorce and she had taken property from the couple’s home unannounced in the past. The man suspected that his wife’s three brothers helped her remove several items, the police report indicated. No one was charged in connection with the alleged burglary.

Among the items missing were a patio set, a rug, a trash can, candles and a garden hose.

Johns Creek puts police chief selection on front burner Council weighs whether citizens advisory panel should be in place first

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Plans to form a Johns Creek Public Safety Citizen Advisory Committee have been put on hold for now.

City leaders said Sept. 8 they first want to concentrate on hiring a new police chief while details of a citizens advisory panel are worked out.

Not everyone was on board with the delay, but a bare majority on the City Council said it makes more sense to have a chief on board who can participate in the process of forming an advisory group that concentrates on public safety. While the council remains committed to leaving the selection of a police chief up to the city manager, officials say widespread public participation will be part of the process.

City Manager Ed Densmore said he has already begun evaluating firms to head the search for a new chief. Forming a citizens advisory panel to participate in the selection process could delay hiring a new chief another three months

beyond the estimated six months it may normally take, he said.

“I don’t want to delay the police chief search process to put this part of the advisory board in that process,” said Densmore, who served as the city’s police chief for more than 10 years. He said one major element in hiring a search firm is its commitment to undertake widespread public participation.

One of the leading candidates right now, he said, would conduct a community survey to help build a profile of the character and qualifications residents are looking for in a police chief.

It is one thing for citizens to have open communications with public safety over crime trends and other concerns, Densmore said. It’s another thing to have residents dictate policy and enforcement standards.

“That needs to be left up to the people with a knowledge base to respond accordingly,” he said.

But, Councilwoman Erin Elwood insisted that a citizens advisory council could not wait. She suggested a council be formed and participate in training while the search for a police chief is conducted.

“I really believe we cannot wait until spring of next year to see this committee,” she said.

Other council members had their own suggestions for forming a citizens council for public safety, but no one could generate a consensus.

Mayor Mike Bodker stressed that residents will participate in both the search for a new police chief and the formation of an advisory council for public safety.

“There has been an erosion of trust between our nation and public safety, and our community and our public safety,” Bodker said. “I do think the citizens advisory board is important.”

If the city can engage the public in a meaningful way, he said, residents should be able to trust that the next police chief is an important voice in forming the advisory panel.

Calls for more citizen involvement mounted this summer when newly appointed Police Chief Chris Byers was placed on administrative leave in midJune. The action was taken shortly after Byers posted remarks on Facebook critical of religious leaders for their support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The posts sparked outrage from some residents. The City Council then announced Byers was the subject of an internal investigation, though details of the probe were not released until August, a month after the final report was issued.

That investigation centered around comments of a graphic sexual nature Byers had made to a female employee.

The council then agreed to a settlement to sever ties with the chief.

When terms of the settlement — a $325,000 payment to Byers in exchange for his resignation — were leaked, public outrage reached a boiling point. More than three dozen residents spent more than an hour at an Aug. 24 meeting berating the council for the way it handled the whole affair.

State awards city $3 million for Cauley Creek Park Grant will supplement $17 million in funding from local parks bond

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek has been awarded a $3 million grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for development of the 195-acre Cauley Creek Park.

The funding comes from the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Act which passed by Georgia voters in 2018 with 83 percent support. The program is designed to provide funding to support parks and trails and protect land critical to wildlife, clean water and outdoor recreation. Johns Creek received the largest share of the $9.8 million distributed to14 cities.

Johns Creek will put these funds toward development of a multi-purpose trail made of pervious rubber material, two steel pedestrian bridges, three wildlife observation decks and landscaping at the Cauley Creek Park area.

The $3 million grant will be used alongside the $17 million the city has already committed to the Cauley Creek project from its parks bond fund. The $40 million bond, passed by Johns Creek voters in 2016, is used specifically for development and acquisition of parks and green space. The grant stipulates the city must fulfill its $17 million commitment and that the project be completed within 24 months from the date of approval.

Johns Creek Recreation and Parks Manager Robby Newton said he thinks the size of the park and the potential effect it will have on residents

helped secure the grant.

“This park just about doubles our current highest park acreage,” Newton said. “It’s right up there with Piedmont Park and Chastain Park.”

Amenities will include playgrounds, multipurpose fields, baseball and softball fields, basketball and pickleball courts, disc golf and a dog park.

The multipurpose fields will be used for lacrosse, soccer and even cricket. Newton said that the greatest amenity is going to be the trail that will wrap around the perimeter of the park.

“It’s going to be the perfect 5K, 3.1 miles,” Newton said. “It’s going to be made of this porous rubber material, so it will be much easier on the knees of runners and walkers.”

Newton said he anticipates people will be able to enjoy parts of the park in late spring 2022.

At a Sept. 8 City Council work session, officials voted unanimously to accept the grant and move forward with the projects.

“I’m excited about it,” Councilman John Bradberry said. “It’s going to make the taxpayer dollar go further and more amenities and a better quality of life.”

The first construction project for the park is the initial portion of the Cauley Creek Perimeter trail. This $670,000 project is currently under review by the City Council. This portion of the trail will be 2,500 feet and run from the park entrance on Bell Road to the Rogers Bridge Trail. If approved, construction would begin in October and is anticipated to be completed in spring 2021.

City Council advances major roadwork plans

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council got down to business on its long-awaited improvements to the Bell and Boles Road corridor.

At its Sept. 8 work session, the council considered a proposed $1.4 million roundabout to be placed at Bell Road and Rogers Circle South. The roundabout would be placed near the entrance of the new Cauley Creek Park.

Plans call for construction to be similar to the roundabout at Bell and Boles roads with three legs. Funding would come from the local transportation sales tax, or TSPLOST. The project also includes funding for filling in the gap of sidewalk and trail between a number of neighborhoods and Shakerag Elementary and River Trail Middle School. Fulton County has notified the city it will reimburse costs for relocation of water utilities necessary to the project.

and John Bradberry both requested a status check on TSPLOST funding to ensure revenues are meeting demand.

The council agreed to move the project forward for consideration during a regular formal meeting.

Also at the work session, TSPLOST Manager Brian O’Connor requested to advance the Bell Road and Cauley Creek Tributary Bridge project to the right-ofway phase. The project would replace the current roadway and separate pedestrian walkway with a new bridge that includes its own pedestrian walkway.

O’Connor said he does not anticipate any pushback on this project and has received positive feedback since it was presented during a January work session in 2019. O’Connor requested approval to use $150,000 of the project’s budget for the right-of-way acquisition.

He assured officials this would leave them sufficient funds to complete the project, including the expense of the bridge, estimated at $1 million.

Council members agreed to move the item to the consent agenda at the next

formal meeting.

The work session also included lengthy discussion on which citysponsored events should remain on the calendar.

Recreation Manager Kirk Franz requested that $18,250 be released from the embargoed special event funds for a Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra concert on Oct. 3. He also suggested that the other October events, such as Trunk or Treat and Johns Creek Arts Festival, be canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

The symphony was to be held in the Mark Burkhalter outdoor amphitheater at Newtown Park. Because of the large size of the amphitheater, they anticipated accommodating a crowd of between 200-300 patrons in a safe environment allowing for social distancing.

“Due to the stationary nature and by implementing COVID-19 plan, we are confident that we can safely execute this event while minimizing the transmission of COVID-19,” Franz said.

However, the mayor and council felt the money wouldn’t be worth it right now.

“That’s a lot of money for 200 or 300 people,” Councilman Lenny Zaprowski said. “I’d rather see us wait till we get the approval and have a bang with the symphony where everyone could come out.”

Councilman John Bradberry conceded that the event was expensive for the number of people, but he also stressed the need to present residents with some sort of opportunity to participate in a community function.

“We have a responsibility to try to do everything that we can while maintaining the parameters that we’re all well aware of,” Bradberry said.

The council weighed the need for events against the turnout and cost, ultimately deciding it best to cancel all October events. Members said they hope the city can make arrangements to hold some events after October where more people can assemble in a safe environment.

“Find a way to bring people together safely and cost-effectively,” Mayor Bodker said. “If we can do that, I support that completely.”

Fulton Schools plans return of students by mid-October COVID infection rates trending on lower path

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON—A continued decline in COVID-19 cases in Fulton County is setting up the gradual return of students back into classrooms, with all schools expected to fully open by mid-October.

Classes in the Fulton School System moved to virtual instruction on March 14 when the pandemic forced closure of the district’s 106 schools.

Last week during a work session for the Fulton School Board, Supt. Mike Looney updated changes to the fourphased reopening approved last month.

The changes could bring students back to schools quicker for face-to-face instruction.

The district entered the first phase Sept. 8 allowing students in pre-K through 2nd grade and small special education classes to come to school once a week for a short period. All other students are allowed one-to-one planned visits with their teachers.

Positive-trending health data prompted Looney to recommend skipping Phase 2 and moving straight to phase 3 on Sept. 21, allowing all students to return to school for one full day a week.

Students will be assigned groups so no more than 25 percent of the student population is assembled at one time.

“It was great to see the yellow buses picking up students [last week] in my neighborhood, and I look forward to the day when the buses are filled with more children,” Looney said.

Phase 4 is targeted for Oct. 5, providing students with two full days of courses, followed by the return to five days on Oct. 14. Face masks will be required for anyone on school property.

Looney emphasized the return to face-to-face is optional for students, at least for this semester, and remote learning will remain in place for those

District announces phased response to COVID cases The Fulton School System has adopted a three-tiered closing process to guide response to students or staff who test positive for or who are exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Last spring, the entire system shut down after a staff member in South Fulton County tested positive for the novel virus.

This fall, if only one or two staff or students tests positive, Superintendent Mike Looney said the district would require quarantine only for individuals who had “direct, sustained contact” within 6 feet for more than 15 minutes, identified through contact tracing.

Impacted areas would be cleaned, but classes would not be disrupted.

If the number of cases rises, the not ready to return to the classroom.

The dates for the return to face-to-face is contingent on health data. Any indication of a rise in local COVID cases could stall the move to the next phase, Looney said.

“We are assuming we are going to hit the target dates,” Looney said. “If not, that decision will be announced a week before the date for re-opening to in-person instruction.”

North Fulton board member Linda McCain questioned the burden placed on teachers who may not know how many students will be in class or on the computer.

Looney said the district is preparing a plan to submit to the public to gauge their intent, and it should know more after the first phase goes into effect.

“My suspicion is that most of the students participating in Phase 1 reopening will be participating in the other phases,” Looney said. “But there will be a process by which parents have to elect to send their children to schools, and we recognize some will opt to continue universal remote learning.”

Looney said he is not prepared to set

If numbers prompt a move to level three, the district will take guidance from the Georgia Department of Public Health and state health officials.

That could lead to school closures.

“If a single student in a single classroom [tests positive] it will not impact the entire school unless it expands to several students and staff,” Looney said.

Closing schools across the entire district will only occur under level three and would be based on the direction of either the public health entity or the state, Looney said. a deadline yet for parents to make that decision. A recent survey completed by approximately 10,000 parents indicated about one in three would likely continue remote learning.

Board member Katie Reeves, who represents North Fulton, said some teachers are concerned with conducting in-person and remote classes simultaneously.

“Complications could occur when a child in the classroom asks a question and the teacher will have to repeat it so children at home will hear it,” Reeves said. “How are we going to support our teachers?”

Looney admitted it was not a perfect process, and will take time to build it to scale. In the meantime, he asked the board’s “grace” to not furlough staff until final numbers come in.

The district’s first week enrollment was approximately 90,000 students, nearly 3,000 students below projections. More than half of the shortfall is among kindergarten students, so numbers may rise when classrooms open.

Expectations are also that students in private schools may return to public school once in-person instruction resumes.

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — In the wake of issues with the June 9 primaries, Fulton County has recruited nearly 3,000 poll workers to help staff more than 245 polling sites around the county And more are on the way.

Many polling sites in the primary were short on workers and those skilled with the new voting machines.

Fulton County Registration and Elections Director Richard Barron said COVID-19 contributed to the missteps.

“During the June 9 primary, we not only lost poll workers but polling sites due to the COVID-19 crisis,” Barron explained. “As we move toward the Nov. 3 election, our goal is to equip the poll workers and our staff with the resources needed to be prepared and successful.”

In the 2018 general election, six in ten poll workers were over the age of 61, and 27 percent of those over 61 were over the age of 70, according to government data from that year’s Election Administration and Voting Survey. Previous years had seen similar demographics of older poll workers. Due to COVID-19’s effect on the elderly population, many of the usual poll workers opted to stay home rather than work during the pandemic.

Fulton County has implemented in-person training for poll workers. The county has more than 60 training sessions scheduled. Barron said participants will receive rigorous training on how to operate the ballot marking devices, serving voters and understanding the importance of maintaining a safe environment.

The county has also increased the number of polling sites from 210 to 240.

Coalition building continues to help working families Framework established to provide assistance

By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Formation of a North Fulton coalition to provide parents with school-aged children some relief during remote learning is gaining ground.

The initiative is barely a month old, and already a network of members have signed on to offer help. Members are meeting regularly on Fridays at 8:30 a.m.

Groundwork for the coalition was announced Aug. 10 during a meeting of the Alpharetta City Council. Its purpose was to help students and parents navigate remote learning challenges in the new school year.

The council unanimously passed an agreement with the local Ed Isakson YMCA to address issues ranging from access to high speed internet to quality childcare and supervision as parents return to work. The proposal called for using the Preston Ridge Community Center, City of Alpharetta Arts Center, and the City of Alpharetta Adult Activity Center as learning sites.

The agreement runs through June 30, 2021 or until virtual learning services are no longer needed.

Plans to use the Arts Center and the Adult Activity Center as learning sites were scrapped following a lack of registration.

The Preston Ridge Community Center is the main location for remote learning.

The Alpharetta Community Center currently holds two programs during the day for children focusing on gymnastics and dancing. Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Services Director Morgan Rodgers said the programs were going well, but enrollment was less than expected.

“We just thought there was going to be a greater need, and I think a lot of people have just figured things out for themselves and are using our programs as a supplement to that,” he said.

Between 10 and 12 children per day take advantage of the in-person programs.

Erollment totals at the Preston Ridge Community Center were unavailable.

Most of the coalition’s work continues in the background creating frameworks and processes necessary for an organization that covers North Fulton. The final frameworks are expected to be shared with the public soon, according to Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard, who has spearheaded the effort.

The coalition includes non-profit organizations such as the United Way and the YMCA. “As the goal is to coordinate the ef-

forts of the various service providers and organizations in North Fulton, none of those organizations could be used as the fiscal agent that would receive, hold and disperse funds raised for this effort,” Drinkard said. “Another example would be creating a process and criteria for evaluating programs [and] initiatives to be funded through the effort.”

The United Way of Greater Atlanta began responding in March to challenges created by the pandemic even though the needs are not new.

The organization awarded two grants recently to help the North Fulton region.

North Fulton Community Charities received $200,000 to support food pantries and provide financial assistance with housing and utilities. Fulton Education Foundation received $300,000 to support housing, food, and therapy for 1,765 Fulton County students with the greatest needs, especially the homeless living in foster care or motels, accessing the internet, and securing devices for online learning.

Regional Director for United Way’s Northeast Region Denise Townsend stressed that the needs now coming into focus because of the pandemic have been around for a long time in varying degrees.

“What’s happened is that the needs have gotten deeper, but they have also spread more broadly,” she said.

The United Way’s resources can be accessed by dialing 2-1-1 and speaking to a live operator from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. A text message can be sent to 898-211 to receive a list of referrals by zip code.

Since August 24, the Alpharetta Family YMCA has held an in-person virtual learning support program from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The cost per day is $44. At the Y, staff assist students logging on and connecting to school programs using their own devices. They keep students focused during remote learning and lead them through exercise and creative activities.

Fulton County Schools spokeswoman Shumuriel Ratliff said the school system’s Learning and Teaching Department offered professional development for YMCA staff through a variety of platforms and resources.

“As of August 26, the YMCA informed FCS that it had exceeded 5,000 registrations across metro Atlanta,” she said. A breakdown by located was not available.

Earlier in the summer, FCS and YMCA collaborated to create the YMCA Campus Connection program like the one held in Alpharetta. Information about the program was shared with parents and teachers in the school district.

The YMCA did not respond to requests for comment or futher details of their operation.

I decided to sit down with Dr. Brent Taylor and physician assistant Kathryn Filipek at Premier Dermatology to get their take on their success and to learn a bit more about them.

Alyssa: Hey you two! So nice to see you guys again! I’ve previously had the pleasure of speaking with you both separately regarding Premier Dermatology and your particular contributions to the practice, but I wanted to take time to sit down with you both to hear your thoughts on your continued success. Dr. Taylor, congratulations on another win for Best of North Fulton 2020! This marks your 3rd year being named both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist in North Fulton since opening in 2017. That’s quite an accomplishment. To what do you attribute your continued success?

Dr. Taylor: Thank you Alyssa! Well, as I’ve said in the past, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to our patients’ healthcare.

Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions.

We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or compels us to do additional research, and Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating on our patients’ behalf. I believe that comes through. All of that, and my awesome dad jokes are a big hit. I’m a father of three boys ages seven, five and two, so I have plenty of time to practice my material.

Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, especially how nice the patients are to laugh at his jokes. Our team really is wonderful. We have experienced and caring team members. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic.

Alyssa: Kathryn and Dr. Taylor, how is everything going in this odd Covid time?

I believe Kathryn joined the practice in March? I bet that was an interesting time to expand?

Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic provider and is knowledgeable and experienced in dermatology.

Most importantly, our skillsets really complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice has been on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling and pain, and Kathryn has years of experience performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is an expert Botox® and filler injector. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments. Covid was inconvenient but the slowdown also allowed us to make sure Kathryn’s integration to the practice was seamless.

Alyssa: Well I think that’s enough serious business for now. I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better.

If you won the lottery tomorrow what would be the first thing you did after you cashed it?

Brent: I would probably pay off the mortgages of my family and all my staff. And I would buy some new socks because mine are pretty sad right now.

And some chocolate chip cookies.

Kathryn: Flee the country and not tell my husband. No, seriously, after working so hard to put myself through college and my medical training, I would love to set up an educational fund for young adults from my hometown in Michigan so they could receive higher education and not have to take half of their adult life to pay it off.

If you could immediately become fluent in something, what would it be?

Brent: Italian. Feeling like a local in a foreign country has to be fun, and I think Italy tops my list.

Kathryn: Spanish. I was able to apply a lot of my “Splanglish” while living in South Florida, but Dr. Taylor puts me to shame when he is able to communicate fluently, and I only understand a portion of what he or my patients are saying.

What were you like in high school?

Brent: I was very smart. And very naive. I had very little time for much besides keeping my nose to the grindstone but was still happy and people still joke that in the back of my head I seem to have The Girl From Ipanema playing on repeat.

Kathryn: I moved halfway through my freshman year, so it took me a bit to find my place. I was outgoing and took part in Cross Country, Basketball, Track, several academic and service clubs, played piano and worked as a server at a restaurant. I also enjoyed a lot of time on the beach of Lake Superior (cold, but true)

Who is someone you look up to?

Brent: My dad. Sounds cliché’ but it’s true. My dad is just such a wonderful man. He’s kind and patient and incredibly intelligent. He has worked extremely hard to accomplish everything he has in life and really instilled in me a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. I am beyond fortunate for my family.

Kathryn: My Grandmother. She grew up on a dairy farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and taught school in a one room schoolhouse until she went to nursing school in Ontario in her 20’s. She didn’t marry my Grandfather until her late 20’s, had her children in her 30’s and worked as a nurse in Detroit until her 70’s. She always had a positive outlook on life and a laugh that would turn into a “hissing fit” because of her asthma, which made all around her giggle.

What do you do in your free time?

Brent: I use those ten seconds to fantasize about having free time. I’m only half-joking. Hobbies are a bit on pause with three boys seven and younger.

Every moment my wife and I have we try and do something for the kids. The park.

Hiking, playing baseball in the backyard, reading together, teaching them to ride a bike, fishing, playing piano. I don’t have children that will just sit and watch a movie. I don’t know if it’s their age but they are just nonstop. My wife refers to them as tiny tornados. When I do have time again, I’d like to resume flying.

I have my pilot’s license and love the beauty of the world seen from the air.

Kathryn: Traveling if I have that much time. Otherwise running, golf, hiking, kayaking and family and friend time.

Honestly, I love taking my dog for a walk on the greenway too!

If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Brent: Is this my opportunity to plug Outback Steakhouse and hope they mail me an honorary-Aussie free-food-for-life card?

Kathryn: Soup. My Dad was our primary cook growing up and never wastes food.

You can make soup out of anything.

What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Brent: Watching fish swim around a coral reef in a sea so warm that you forget you’re even in the water.

Kathryn: Oh, this is a fun question.

Something to challenge myself. Going to a new place. Seeing something out of the ordinary. The last perfect trip I had was in Costa Rica, where I kayaked at night in bioluminescence water, climbed a 200 foot tree, hiked through the rain forest and swam in the river (yes, I got ticks). I even tried surfing and ate a termite! Flights and weather were perfect.

Locals were amazing. Can’t wait for the next perfect vacation.

What is something embarrassing about yourself?

Brent: Um, I never remember birthdays or anniversaries etc. Not because I don’t remember what day they are but because I don’t ever know what date it currently is.

Oh, and I once was backstage a Miley Cyrus concert. It was a friend’s fault I promise!

Kathryn: I used to be amazing at remember peoples’ faces and names. Now I’ve turned into what I used to make fun of my mother for. Sigh.

What is a long-term goal?

Brent: More than anything I want my kids to grow up to reach their potential and be happy.

Kathryn: Ditto to that. Happiness and health for my children and never stop learning.

Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, safety for our patients while deliver-

We were one of the first primary care practices in our area to adopt car visits and telemedicine visits in mid-March to minimize our patient’s exposure to Coronavirus during their visits. All sick patients are evaluated in their car and tested for COVID-19, strep throat, or flu if it is appropriate, or evaluated by a telemedicine visit to avoid spread to other patients. Only well patients and employees are allowed in our office after they pass a temperature check and symptom screen. Mask and social distancing are enforced. Intensified cleaning protocols are in place.

Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants.

There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market.

For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene.

The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised. Just a few examples:

We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice.

We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all.

Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on.

The grit and grace of working moms

By TIFFANY GRIFFITH newsroom@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — There’s a painful truth Dr. Vonda Wright wants to break to working moms.

“Acknowledge that we’re not returning to normal,” the Northside Hospital surgeon said.

Speaking at the recent Women INfluencing Business Leadership Series, hosted by the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Wright said the so-called “new normal” has working mothers at a professional and financial disadvantage.

The National Women’s Law Center reports women with underage children make up nearly 16 percent of the workforce, but they represent large portions of essential workers that put their lives at risk. Working moms also account for a significant portion of service industry jobs that have disappeared during the pandemic, the center says.

Figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show the unemployment rate for women was at 10.6 in July. For men, the rate was 9.8. The numbers improved slightly in August, but women still had a higher unemployment rate, 8.4 percent, than men, 8 percent.

Wright says there is another harsh reality for today’s workforce.

“The truth of the matter is, in the future, we’re all going to be poorer,” she said.

Georgia mothers are already bringing in less money than fathers in the Peach State. According to a May 2020 study by

the National Women’s Law Center, working mothers overall are paid $0.74 for every dollar paid to fathers in the state. This amounts to a loss of $13,926 annually. Income continues to shrink when the data is broken down by race. Georgia ranks 40th in the nation for pay for Latina mothers, 33rd for Native American mothers, and 30th for White (non-Hispanic) mothers.

Nearly 77 percent of moms work full time, and many are the sole or primary breadwinner for their families, according to the Center for American Progress.

Locally, North Fulton Community Charities reports low or lost wages have led to poverty and homelessness for some struggling mothers and kids.

And childcare isn’t cheap. For those who can afford it, childcare can take 7 percent out of a household budget. For those living below the poverty line, research shows it can consume 30 percent of one’s income.

Vicki Shook, a senior manager with Verizon, says female contributions, including those of working moms, should be valued in the white- and blue-collar world.

“Women are strong leaders, communicators and problem solvers who can help a company, not only survive, but truly thrive,” Shook said. “Women are so important for promoting a good culture.

Wright agrees.

“Despite the fact that you’re holding down the workplace, you’re probably also holding down the home front.”

“If we’re going to do COVID and parenting, we’re going to think creatively,” Wright said. “We’re going to think differently. We’re going to think about the ways we can be collaborative, instead of just swirling around or circling the drain in chaos.”

Wright, an orthopedic surgeon and chief of Northside Hospital’s Sports Medicine Department, lives with her husband, two of her six kids, and her octogenarian parents. The pandemic gave her another plate to spin, but it taught Wright to be, what she calls, a CEO Parent.

“C is for creativity and communication.

E is for energy and expectations. O is for outsourcing and overflowing,” Wright said.

She tells moms working from home that productivity will look different, especially with small children.

“Plan bursts of highly productive time,” Wright said. “Maybe that’s planned around the morning and afternoon nap. Maybe that’s when you get a family member or a

trusted helper to give you two solid hours where you’re highly productive.”

Wright says wartime communication is critical at home and on the job.

“Everybody needs to know the plan,” Wright said. “Maybe, you have to have daily huddles. Maybe you have to have a Sunday afternoon discussion about what your week looks like and how to accommodate that.”

Most importantly, Wright wants moms to give themselves some grace while working from home during the pandemic. Even if it means surrendering to screen time for the kids and allowing dust bunnies to run wild.

“We suffer from thinking that we have to do everything,” she said. “We think someone is going to die if we say ‘No.’” she said. “Ask yourself, in this crazy time, do you really have to do everything?”

some polling sites resulted in long lines,” Barron said. “We have included more polling locations for the Nov. 3 election. This means that lines will be reduced going forward.”

The State Farm Arena will function as an official early voting location for all Fulton County residents. This is Georgia’s largestever voting precinct allowing for tens of thousands of voters to cast their votes while maintaining social distancing guidelines.

Early voting will run Oct. 12- 30.

Fulton County offers two other voting options for those not comfortable with going to the polls. Citizens can request a

ballot by email and send it in by mail, or they can take advantage of the 24/7 drop boxes. Fulton County now has 40 drop boxes throughout the county. Neither method requires any interaction with the staff. Currently, voters can request an absentee ballot as late as Friday, Oct. 30.

Poll workers are compensated $355 for working the election and attending training sessions. Those interested in becoming a poll worker can fill out the form at fultoncountyga.gov.
