Johns Creek mayor apologizes for misuse of staff aide position

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. —Mayor Mike Bodker announced at a June 1 council meeting that after six months of investigation his executive aide, Craig Kidd, has been dismissed.

Kidd came under fire last December when blog and social media posts circulated that alleged Kidd used his city-owned phone and laptop to conduct personal and political business.

At the time, Bodker BODKER called for an independent investigation into the matter, which found that Kidd was in violation of city policies.

Bodker apologized to the council and citizens of Johns Creek, saying he does not intend to fill the position soon, if at all for the rest of his KIDD term.

“I am solely responsible for the daily management of the executive aide,” Bodker said. “As I reviewed the circumstances leading up to this situation, I realized I should have exercised better management.”

ize about matters pertaining to the City Council and local development.

The blog accused Kidd of using his city phone and laptop to recruit candidates to run in 2019’s City Council election and to do work pertaining to his role as the first vice chair of the Fulton County Republican Party. The blog obtained this information through an open records request of Kidd’s texts, emails and internet activity from January to October.

Following Bodker’s apology, Councilman Chris Coughlin, who faced three challengers in his reelection bid last fall, was willing to look on the bright side.

“The key takeaway is that through this misuse or mistake, we’ve been able to identify what we believe to be a gap in proper clarity, rules and responsibilities surrounding the executive aide,” Coughlin said. “It’s actually allowing us to grow towards better governance, transparency and fiscal discipline.”

Bodker, Coughlin and Councilwoman Stephanie Endres have been working together on a set of reforms to the mayor’s aide position.

The current city charter allows the mayor to appoint an executive aide who receives a salary in line with department heads and gives the mayor broad discretion over the duties of the aide, so long as they pertain to city business.

According to a report prepared by Bodker, Coughlin and Endres, the responsibilities of three people who have filled the role to date have varied significantly, one writing grants for the city,

another serving as a liaison to the arts community.

Additionally, several duties one might associate with an executive aide now fall on other members of the city staff.

An executive assistant coordinates the mayor’s calendar, the communication department writes the mayor’s speeches, and the city clerk’s office prepares meeting material, the report states.

The proposed changes to the city charter would lower the aide’s salary range to that of an executive assistant to the city manager. It would require the aide to go through an open hiring process, receive annual performance reviews and follow the same policies as other city employees.

The charter change would also give the city council oversight to the job description of the aide, limiting the mayor’s broad flexibility with the role.

While the council unanimously agreed a charter change is needed, some members questioned why the city needs the position at all.

“I don’t see a real need for this position at this point in time,” Councilman Lenny Zaprowski said. “If it’s not going to be filled for a year and a half, then why is the position needed it all?”

My Eyes are Dry but I Don't Want to See My Eye Doctor Yet - What About Telemedicine?

In these uncertain times, many patients are continuing to experience the symptoms of dry eyes but hesitate to seek office consultation with their eye care physicians. Telemedicine has provided a platform for patients to seek quick and efficient guidance for their treatment, although it does have certain limitations. This article is intended to discuss the role telemedicine plays in the treatment of dry eye disease.

---------------------------First, understanding the limitations of telemedicine is paramount. Telemedicine consists of either a video chat or phone call with a patient. These types of communication facilitate the discussion of symptoms and allow the doctor to correlate them to disease processes such as dry eye disease.

Symptoms of dry eye disease typically include irritation, grittiness, foreign body sensation, scratchiness, burning, stinging, excess tearing, blurred vision, eye fatigue, and light sensitivity. The difficulty of diagnosing dry eye disease based upon symptoms alone is that many of these symptoms can also occur with various other ocular diseases. When any of these symptoms are severe, an in-office consultation is warranted.

To formally diagnose dry eye disease, physicians need to evaluate ocular signs. Clinical office examination of these signs before initiating treatment allows the physician to observe for improvement throughout the course of treatment to ascertain whether or not a particular treatment is effective.

Signs of dry eye disease include, but are not limited to: reduced tear break up time, reduced tear meniscus, increased tear meniscus, corneal keratitis, conjunctival irritation, blepharitis, poor meibomian gland expression, telangiectasia of the eyelids, debris and/or collerettes on the eyelashes, conjunctival injection, and poor blink dynamics. The video chat will allow your doctor to grossly examine external ocular tissues and/or function, as well as gauge your severity; however, the best way to observe these signs is by in-office slit lamp biomicroscopy. Slit lamp biomicroscopy provides the doctor with the proper magnification to see the signs of dry eye disease.

Another limitation of telemedicine in the treatment of dry eye disease is the inability to check eye pressure. Topical corticosteroid therapy may be indicated as a treatment for dry eye disease. Although effective, there is the possibility for ocular side effects associated with topical corticosteroid therapy, such as elevated eye pressure, steroid induced glaucoma, and cataract formation. It is typically suggested that a patient’s eye pressure be monitored when using topical corticosteroids.

Although there are limitations in eye care, telemedicine has provided patients a quick way to seek care from the safety and comfort of their home.

Johns Creek leaders respond to outcry over Floyd’s death

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — As protests continued across the county following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, Johns Creek leaders spoke out condemning his killing.

At the June 1 City Council meeting, Mayor Mike Bodker read a prepared statement of solidarity with the African American community on behalf of the city.

“While you are feeling pain and struggling with a profound sense of solitude and loss, please know that your Johns Creek community holds you close,” Bodker stated. “Brutality and inhumane cruelty, displayed by any individual, let alone a police officer, is horrible, reprehensible and will not be tolerated in our city.”

Floyd died May 25 in Minneapolis when then police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck for eight minutes, as captured on video.

Chauvin has been charged with seconddegree murder.

Three other officers involved in the death have been fired and charged with abetting second-degree murder. Protests erupted across the county over the following weekend, largely peaceful but with instances of looting and rioting in some cities, including Atlanta.

Johns Creek City Councilman Brian Weaver, who until last year was the police department’s second in command, thanked the mayor for his statement.

“It was good that we recognized there is a problem,” Weaver said. “There has been a problem in America for over 400 years … As an African American, I can tell you that it’s very frustrating. It is horrendous. I have two sons that I have raised here, and I’ve always made them aware of what could happen to them when they are approached by police.”

Johns Creek’s Police Chief Chris Byers also issued a statement.

“The officers of the Johns Creek Police Department are absolutely stunned and angered by the force used against [Floyd],” Byers said. “The level of force was excessive and in no way reasonable, which is the standard that we are sworn to abide by. This former officer in no way represents law enforcement and the badge we wear.”

Byers said the community has every right to voice their anger and demand justice for Floyd and his family, but he disavowed the vandalism and violence waged during some of the protests.

Bodker and Byers pointed to measures Johns Creek has taken to prevent incidents of excessive force from happening in the city, including use-of-force and de-escalation training for all uniformed officers and community engage-

Weaver said he is proud to have been a part of a department with policies in place to prevent racial bias and police violence, but he knows these incidents

can happen anywhere. When they do happen, they must be addressed swiftly and severely, he said.

“The criminal justice reforms that are in place now, they’re not working,” Weaver said. “In order for us to do something about it, we can’t be silent. We can’t stand on the sidelines. To be silent is to be complicit. That’s why I’m glad this council spoke up.”

Although Johns Creek prides itself on its diversity, it is no stranger to useof-force controversies. In April 2018, Shukri Ali Said, a 36-year-old SomaliAmerican Muslim woman, was killed by police officers while experiencing a mental health crisis.

Last month, the Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), The Awad Law Firm and Spear & Filipovits announced the filing of a wrongful death lawsuit against the city on behalf of Said’s family.

The lawsuit accuses four Johns Creek police officers of engaging in excessive force by firing a Taser and bean bag at Said and then shooting the 127-pound woman five times in the head, chest and neck.

Police said Said did not drop the knife she was carrying despite “several attempts” to de-escalate the encounter.

According to CAIR, the four officers involved are now back on active duty with the Johns Creek Police Department.

Small businesses seek COVID-19 relief, protections

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Small businesses still need help to stay afloat and recover from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

That was the main theme of a June 4 town hall conference call held by State Sen. John Albers (R-Roswell) and his guest Georgia State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business Nathan Humphrey. The two discussed and answered questions about the impact of COVID-19 on small

businesses with about two dozen attendees on the line.

Humphrey and his nonprofit in part help represent small business owners who often don’t have in-house lawyers and lobbyists.

Small business owners have reported some of their top concerns are how to protect their own employees and customers, regaining consumer confidence, complying with health and safety guidelines, and obtaining an adequate supply of personal protective equipment, Humphrey said.

Albers said legislators are working with local chambers of commerce to help draft a business immunity bill addressing these concerns.

“It would be extremely hard to prove that if you got COVID-19 or the flu or any type of sickness that you got it at a specific restaurant or barber shop or business,” Humphrey said. “That won’t stop a frivolous lawsuit. Unfortunately for small businesses, they’re targeted many times… If you have a lawsuit against you, and you’re a small business, that completely ties your hands. You’re not able to get a loan, you’re not able to expand — you’ve got your resources tied up.”

Albers and other state senators will

return in session June 15, the first assemblage since the pandemic hit Georgia in mid-March. He anticipates discussing the business immunity bill during that time, but one of the most pressing issues facing legislators is passing the fiscal year 2021 budget.

Despite large cuts to the budget because of COVID-19’s impact on the economy, Albers said there is some good news. Original projected budget cuts topped 14 percent, but more recent numbers track it at 11 percent, he said.

“I don’t want to sugarcoat this,” Albers said. “Eleven percent is a lot of cutting and a lot of money. It will still be difficult and painful to make those changes. But I am very optimistic. I believe that with the smart work we’ve done in Georgia and what’s happening now that it will continue to improve.”

In the meantime, Albers urged people to patronize local small businesses when possible, even if it means sacrificing convenience.

“I love Amazon as far as getting my packages delivered to my door too,” he said. “But I am going out of my way to make sure I buy everything from every local business I can.”

Learning and remembering lessons from the pandemic Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.

We must be over the rainbow.

It feels like things have changed. I am not sure when I realized it. It was just something that RAY APPEN occurred to me over Publisher Emeritus ray@appenmediagroup.com the past couple days. All my life, I have been a slow learner. If I had more sense, I would simply observe what the friends around me have figured out and then know that I will be in the same place — in the same space — at some point soon.

It is sort of like when you realize, despite how young you feel inside, that yes, you actually are old now and in the second half or last third of life. Boy, that is sort of hard to write. “Why?” I wonder.

This pandemic has changed things or has been a catalyst for change. It has been something that has progressively “set in” for most of us. Around early March, we all knew or suspected that we were entering uncharted territory. Then, things just seemed to evolve from day to day — similar to the upheaval we now see in the streets sparked by the death of George Floyd.

We gradually came to understand that each day would probably not bring closure. We then discovered that we were personally involved. We realized that “this” was not just an isolated “event.” It was, in fact, a process.

We found ourselves inside a whirling tornado — just like in the Wizard of Oz — and there wasn’t a lot we could do to control where we landed or when the chaos would stop.

This realization has not been very comforting.

Most of us tend to go through life assuming that bad things sometimes happen to people, but those people are usually “other” people, not me. Then something happens eventually to us — like this pandemic — or to someone close to us, and a light bulb goes off, and we are forced to admit that we don’t have a “get out of jail free” card, that we are not exempt, that our lives are really no different than anyone else’s in things that matter.

It is the “personal” part of this pandemic that, I think, has finally registered with me and probably to many of you. Our status quo has been disrupted — not someone else’s.

Most of us have short memories.

We frequently behave like an alcoholic

who successfully goes through the agony of withdrawal, only to, a short time later, relapse into the same behavior that caused the pain. We seem to be hardwired to need order, consistency and predictability, and this leads us to quickly forget or ignore anything that disrupts or interferes with this need.

I wonder if we will retain or remember anything related to what we personally are going through right now with this pandemic and ,after it passes, if we will change any of our behavior, our attitudes, or our values. Or, will we simply default back to our comfortable prepandemic status quo. My instinct tells me, unfortunately, that we will quickly move on and go back to how we were before. I hope not.

We seem to hate change, even when not changing causes pain, too.

“Change” was the core message that Obama championed and that helped him be elected to two terms. “Change” too, was ultimately the horse that Trump rode into the White House as well and which may yet carry him into a second term. So, it puzzles me why this is, when we know that “change” is not something that comforts us or gives us a sense of security or well-being. Why is “change” such a driving force today in our lives when it is not something any of us are comfortable with or generally something that we, by default, seek?

Anyone? Love to find out why.

We all deal with stress and uncertainty differently — in our own way.

I find myself taking inventory of the things that I think are important to me, things I count on to bring some order and focus back into my life. At the end of the day, that means my family — my wife, my children and grandchildren, my relatives, my friends. I find myself thinking about things I can control, simple things like speaking to people, reaching out to neighbors, choosing not to judge, having a positive attitude, caring for animals and how I can personally change my habits and actions to give our environment a break — tiny things I can do to help save the planet.

I find myself focusing on positive things I can control and I am trying to take steps now that might help me remember how I feel right now — this minute — during this pandemic so that I will not forget it and so I will do a better job post-pandemic in doing my share to make everyone’s life a little bit better.

Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it. That is not something I want to do or see. I want to be better than that. I want us all to be better than that.

Johns Creek Arts Center spreads positive message through stressful times

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — After closing its doors for more than two months, the Johns Creek Arts Center reopened to camps and classes June 1.

Though the classes are small to ensure social distancing, and things look different with everybody wearing masks, Executive Director Stephanie Donaldson said it’s good to have people back in the building.

“It’s been wonderful,” Donaldson said. “I feel like we have breathed life back into the building, like the sun is shining on us. We want to share positivity, happiness, creativity. There’s enough of the bad right now.”

Donaldson took over as director of the center in February, only a few weeks before she was thrust into the chaotic world of steering a nonprofit through the storm of a pandemic.

“The Arts Center has been around for 25 years, and I’m not going to let the ship go down,” she said. “There’s just no

way. It’s just too important to the community for all ages.”

First, the center moved its spring exhibit, a collaboration with the Atlanta Collage Society, online, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise, Donaldson said.

“Going forward, even when things are back to normal, we want to offer virtual exhibitions,” she said. “It’s a way to get the art out to people who might not be able to visit the center and for artists who are participating that have friends and family out of state.”

The center next collaborated with the City of Johns Creek on the “Share Joy” art competition, which highlighted the work of elementary, middle and high school students.

“We were able to join in that message of sharing happiness and art with the city,” Donaldson said. “We were very happy to have that opportunity.”

The Drake House provides transitional housing for homeless mothers and children in north Metro Atlanta. The Arts Center works with the Drake House to provide arts lessons for families in their housing. The Drake House informed Donaldson they needed funding to provide mothers with grocery store gift cards.

“We thought, we’re doing pretty good,” Donaldson said. “We wanted to do what

we called a ‘greater give.’ It felt good that we were able to give to another nonprofit during this time. We were happy we had such a great response from our audience and were able to raise $1,200.”

Now, Donaldson is looking ahead to later this summer and fall to figure out how to offer as much arts programing as possible while following safety guidelines.

“We’re being very cautious, and we want to be contentious of our community, but we also want people to know we’re here,” Donaldson said. “We’re here for you and your families.”

Local restaurant gives back to healthcare workers

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Inspired by its customers’ generosity and in line with its own principles, BurgerFi is delivering free meals to local healthcare workers and emergency responders facing the COVID-19 pandemic.

In late May, the gourmet burger chain began the national campaign in partnership with the Marcum Foundation, the charitable giving arm of independent accounting firm Marcum Foundation. Its goal, to deliver at least 200,000 free meals, was reached within two weeks of the campaign’s kickoff.

BurgerFi in Alpharetta has so far provided approximately 1,000 free meals for Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Wellstar North Fulton Hospital, and the team plans to keep giving.

“We love doing this, so as long as the need is there, we’re going to keep doing our part,” said owners Ron and Terrie Altman.

The Altmans, like many business owners, have seen their industry make major changes to adjust to the “new normal” since the pandemic struck Georgia in mid-March.

BurgerFi was severely impacted by closures and has turned to mostly take out and delivery options to stay afloat, Ron said.

Fortunately, BurgerFi saw significant support from local businesses who patronize it and other nearby restaurants for lunch, he added, and recent talks with the City of Alpharetta has allowed the restaurant to convert some parking spaces for additional outdoor seating.

It was during these rough weeks that the Altmans saw the strength of their customers and community.

“It’s so encouraging for us, in the midst of this pandemic, to see so much generosity show up,” Ron said.

“We’ve been seeing guests of ours who are choosing to buy meals for hospital staff or provide gift cards.”

The Alpharetta location regularly supports about a dozen local nonprofits, such as The Drake House and HomeStretch. This time, inspired by their customers, they have joined the effort to help nearby hospitals.

“The healthcare workers really are heroes on the front lines,” Ron said. “It’s a natural thing to want to go and serve the people who are serving us… It has been our genuine privilege and pleasure to serve these

BurgerFi is now open with some indoor and outdoor seating options. It is adhering to CDC guidelines and best practices for the health and safety of its customers and employees, which includes limiting person-toperson contact, wearing masks and spaced seating. The restaurant is also avoiding using commonly touched items, such as napkin holders and condiment dispensers, in favor of single-use items.

Ron said they are still not where they should be economically, but he is grateful for the support and wants to support others where they can.

“We find it so encouraging during such a challenging time as this, to find bright positive examples of compassion and people helping each other,” he said. “BurgerFi is here to serve Alpharetta and its neighbors for the long haul.”

An interview with Premier Dermatology’s newest provider: Kathryn Filipek, PA-C Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta recently welcomed certified Physician Assistant Kathryn Filipek (PA-C) to the practice. Having visited Premier Dermatology on several occasions, I have become quite FILIPEK familiar with the staff and was thus excited to interview the newest addition. Like all of her Premier Dermatology coworkers, Kathryn exudes warmth, genuine happiness and compassion. Her excitement for dermatology in palpable. The following is an expert of our interview: Maggie Mullvain: What do you like most about being a dermatology PA? Kathryn: I love the ability to establish interactive relationships with patients and their families. In almost 20 years of practicing Dermatology, I have been honored to treat entire families, all the way from infantile eczema to young children with warts, older siblings with teenage acne, parents with hair loss or seeking cosmetic maintenance, and grandparents with rashes or skin cancer.

I feel very privileged that families trust me to care for them and allow me to be a part of their “medical family”. It’s a thrill for me to see children who I treated for a mole or a rash return after they graduate from college and tell me about their new careers.

Maggie: What is your favorite area within dermatology?

Kathryn: Honestly, I have a difficult time answering that. Dermatology is ever changing. New discoveries, technologies, and treatments revolutionize how we think about skin care and how we treat patients. When I began working in dermatology, Botox had just been approved and was injected into only a few places. We had collagen fillers that too frequently could cause allergic reactions. Our lasers were the size of a kitchen stove and were limited in their energy output. Now we have new laser, injectable and cosmetic treatments that yield astounding results. Not to mention all the new medications that we have for acne, the “biologics” for psoriasis and eczema, and the modern skin cancer and vein treatments available. It really is hard to choose. The fact that each interaction with patients is so different and the results so meaningful and satisfying whether we are working on a medical, surgical or cosmetic problem means that I have to say I have several favorites.

Maggie: So the fact that dermatology allows you to be so multidimensional is one of the field’s highlights?

Kathryn: Exactly! Variety and advances keep me excited about every day.

Maggie: What drew you to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta?

Kathryn: Balance. In the first seven years of my dermatology career, I worked in a very busy practice in South Florida where I could not be the well-rounded practitioner I am today.

It was a great place to learn a lot about general dermatology and skin cancer and prepared me well in dermatology’s fundamentals, but the expectation to see too many patients in a short period made proper care challenging and spreading my wings difficult. Practicing the last several years at a busy practice in Buckhead, I gained expertise with many of dermatology’s cosmetic services and advanced technologies while staying on top of advances in medical and surgical dermatology.

While my professional life was rewarding, the commute was a challenge. One thing we all know about Atlanta is that the traffic can be a battle. I am a Milton resident and have two daughters in local high schools. When the opportunity arose to practice close to home with an excellent physician such as Dr. Taylor, it was too good to pass up.

I now enjoy the balance of a dynamic and varied work life and being close to home, with more time to spend with my husband and daughters.

Look at sites like the National Institute for Aging that have a wide variety of options in this area.

Forsyth couple cancels $1.8 million in medical debt for local families

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Nearly 1,000 local families should soon receive a yellow envelope in the mail that will release a significant burden from their shoulders.

Paul Hoyt, a Forsyth County resident and business owner, and his family have eliminated $1.8 million in medical debt for families in Forsyth and Gwinnett counties.

Hoyt and his wife, Brandi, have taken on different giving projects in the past, Hoyt said, and he was intrigued upon hearing about nonprofit RIP Medical Debt through his church.

The organization works with donors to purchase outstanding medical debt for those struggling or unable to pay medical bills.

“I started researching the organization, and I though it would be an amazing thing to do,” Hoyt said. “Personally, I know some folks who have struggled with [medical debt]. And through this journey with the organization, I just learned how many people are burdened by it.”

According to RIP Medical Debt, twothirds of all U.S. bankruptcies are tied

to medical debt issues and one-quarter of all credit card debt in the country is related to healthcare costs.

Inspired by the cause, Hoyt decided to help those in his backyard. The $1.8 million in eliminated debt includes 998 local families with qualifying debt. That includes those who earn less than twice the federal poverty level, those who have out-of-pocket medical expenses of 5 percent or more of their annual income, or those whose debts are greater than their assets.

The average abolished debt among the recipients of Hoyt’s donation was $1,809.

With the financial devastation brough about by the coronavirus pandemic, the timing of Hoyt’s philanthropy was even more vital.

“I love the serendipity,” Hoyt said.

“When I had begun this journey (in 2019), there was no such thing as this coronavirus. And then the buying of the debt was a month into this [pandemic].

From my worldview, it just seems to be heavenly timing to help people in a time when they need it most and give encouragement when people need it most.”

Hoyt is the founder and owner of

Connoisseur of Time, an online-based wristwatch company that sells high-end and vintage watches. He thanked his employees for the opportunity to allow him to help others.

“This is very much a result of the hard work of our employees to enable our business to grow so we can do these types of things,” he said.

Hoyt has also funded the building of a well in Haiti, helped start a business to employ women in Kenya to knit sweaters for school uniforms, and he has donated to various Christian organizations.

The letter that should soon inform locals their medical debt has been paid off states the recipient no longer has any obligation to pay their debt and they will not owe any taxes on the cancellation of the debt. It also says “Our forgiveness of this debt is a no-stringsattached gift.”

“I genuinely don’t have an expectation to have people reach out or to be thanked or for people to get in contact with me,” he said. “If anyone does, it will bring joy to our hearts to hear what it did for them.”
