ROSWELL, Ga. — The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office has confirmed that the body found near a Roswell swimming pool on May 29 is that of a missing Johns Creek teenager. That morning, the Johns Creek Police Department started an investigation after 17-year-old Centennial High School student Mercedes Chico-Sims was declared missing. A few hours later, shortly after 10 a.m., maintenance personnel at Atlantic Newtown Apartments on Nesbit Ferry Road called 911 after finding a body. Roswell police investigated the incident and ruled it was a suspicious death. Two days later, the deceased person was confirmed to be the missing teenager. The family of Chico-Sims said in a statement that they were devastated to learn about her fate and are asking for privacy during the grieving process. “Beyond our grief, our commitment is to honor and remem-

Neighborhood dispute leads to armed threats JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a threat of armed robbery in a Johns Creek neighborhood, where a woman reportedly came to a man’s doorstep demanding money and claiming he had plotted an armed robbery against her mother. The man told police he knew nothing of the accusations, so he denied the woman any money and asked her to leave the premises. At this point, he said the woman started yelling and threatening him. Car window smashed, laptop, backpack stolen JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man reported his car’s rear driver’s side window was smashed and his laptop and backpack were missing on May 23 at a parking lot on Old Alabama Road. The man reported the incident at 10:25 p.m. and said he had last seen his car and items at 6 p.m. He was inside the El Porton restaurant during the time of the incident and his car alarm did not sound, he told police. There is no security footage of the parking lot.
Tenant accused of tossing furniture into driveway JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek rental owner filed a report with police that one of her tenants had thrown several pieces of furniture and appliance items out of her rental home and into her driveway. The owner told police that her tenant, whom she has had ongoing disputes
with, is responsible. The items were removed and had been damaged. They included a refrigerator, couch, armchair, mattress, stove and multiple bags and boxes of items. The woman provided police with pictures of the items in the driveway.
Employee falls victim to email scammer JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man reported to police May 21 that someone pretending to be his boss contacted him through email asking for $2,000 in Apple gift cards. The Johns Creek man, who was at home, went to the store to purchase four $500 Apple gift cards and sent the card numbers to the suspect over email. When the scammer asked the man for more money, he became suspicious and contacted police. The man and the suspect only communicated over email, not over the phone.
Restaurant seeks party responsible for $5,000 tab JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Organizers of a wedding reception held at Sugo in Johns Creek on May 25 are accused of leaving without paying their $5,313.83 bill, the restaurant’s manager told police. The bride for the wedding told the manager that she was unaware the bill had to be paid in full on that day. She was under the assumption that they would be able to make payments on the bill, the manager reported. The manager was unable to contact her again for the duration of the investigation, police said. The manager was able to get the couple’s address from their photographer.

Johns Creek continues street maintenance plan By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek Public Works launched into a new cycle of neighborhood repaving this spring, marking the fifth consecutive year of the maintenance program. In 2014, the city decided to take a proactive approach to neighborhood road maintenance. It used a consultant with a specially equipped vehicle to drive each of Johns Creek’s streets and rate their conditions. Pavement Quality Index (PQI) rates streets on a 1 to 100 scale developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The index measures cracking, potholes, rutting, weathering and other road conditions. Low PQI scores reflect a lower condition of the pavement. The 2014 survey revealed that many streets had a substandard PQI. Using data from the survey, the Public Works staff developed a five-year repaving plan for the city. The lower the PQI score, the higher the priority when scheduling the repaving. The city’s goal was to bring all neighborhoods in Johns Creek to a minimum PQI of 65. In the 2016 fiscal year, the city increased funding for the project to accelerate the timeline, and the original five-year plan was completed in four years (2015-2018).

Last year, the city commissioned a new survey, and a plan was developed for subdivisions to be resurfaced over the next five years (2019-2024). “This year the lowest (rating) was in the 40 range,” Deputy Public Works Director Chris Haggard said. “The first time we did it, some of them were down in the teens, so overall we’ve caught up on all the really bad ones, and now our base is higher.” The city plans to resurface all roads below a PQI score of 70. This year, crews are slated to pave 8.5 miles in 16 neighborhoods and 3.3 miles of main roads this year. The resurfacing project is not a total reconstruction, but improves the quality of the road by targeting specific areas, like potholes. This more affordable process is known as patching. Typically, about 20 percent of neighborhood roads are patched, Public Works staffer Alton Matthews said. “A crack in the asphalt does not mean the road has failed,” Matthews said. “A total reconstruction would mitigate those cracks, but the perception that a crack in the asphalt coming through to the overlaying surface means that the pavement is faulty, that is not true. Pavement does expand and contract.” Rainfall and freezing weather can increase the number of potholes, as was the case this past winter, Haggard said.
“By maintaining your asphalt you’re reducing the rebuild cost that you could occur,” Haggard said. “If you just let it deteriorate, the cost to then fix it is much higher because you have to go deeper.” By taking a proactive approach, the city is minimize the impact on the residents’ daily commute, Haggard said. “We can get in and out of a neighborhood in a week,” he said. The repaving program improvements also helps sustain property values, Matthews said. Work has begun or been completed for The Vicarage, Kensington Oaks, Stevens Creek, The Regency at Wellington, The Enclave at Wellington, Windermere Park, Oakmont, Glenside, Morton Reserve and Jones Estates. Jones Bridge Landing is scheduled to begin patching June 5, and Haydens Walk is set to begin work June 7. Edgewater Estates, Parkside, Bellacree and Belcrest are set for repaving later this summer. The schedule is subject to change based on weather and availability of additional crews. Paving will be done during daylight hours. The city asks subdivision residents to not park on the street and to turn off sprinklers during the repaving process.
The repaving process Patching: The road is inspected to identify areas in need of more significant repair. The marked areas are cut out, removed and replaced with stable material to strengthen the road. Milling: Along the edge of the roads, the existing roadway is ground up, or milled, and removed to create a smooth tie-in with the curb and gutter. This temporarily lowers the road. Driveways are accessible at this stage. Tack coat placement: A layer of a tar-like substance called tack coat is sprayed immediately prior to placement of asphalt. The tack is a sticky substance that may stick to vehicles, so avoid driving at this stage. Roadway paving: Once the tack has been placed, hot-mix asphalt is laid to resurface the road. Do not drive on just-laid asphalt if possible. Compaction: The pavement is then rolled to compact the asphalt. The asphalt should be safe to drive on within a few hours.
North Fulton cities grow in 2018 By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — According to the latest Census Bureau estimates, populations in portions of the South are surging. And North Fulton cities are following the trend. The Census Bureau released population estimates for 2018 on May 23 and with it, the top 15 cities in the nation that have had greatest numeric growth. Out of those 15 cities, the South claimed over half. Eight Southern cities had the largest numeric gains, including San Antonio, Texas; Fort Worth, Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; Austin, Texas; Jacksonville, Florida; and Miami, Florida. North Fulton cities, to a lesser extent, have grown in population since 2017. Sandy Springs experienced the greatest growth, with an estimated increase of 2,253 residents, bringing its total population to 108,797. Alpharetta grew by an estimated 556

residents. That puts its total population estimate at 66,255. Milton also saw a surge in population, with an estimated increase of 362 residents. It’s total estimated population now sits at 39,217. Johns Creek grew by 78 residents to a total estimated population of 84,310. Roswell experienced the least amount of population growth among North Fulton cities, according to Census Bureau numbers. It grew by 14 residents, with
its total estimated population sitting at 94,650. All North Fulton cities for the most part have been growing steadily each year since 2010, according to the Census Bureau. New salon focuses on community marketing By CONNER EVANS newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Hazel Minx Salon opened just five months ago and has already made strong ties with the community. The luxury salon in the Fresh Market along Old Alabama Road has donated to silent auctions for different charity organizations including the Ahimsa House, which helps abused women, the St. Bridgett Catholic Church and the Perimeter School. The salon also donated haircuts to Mount Pisgah’s special needs prom, St. Ives Country Club’s tennis charity event, the Voila Foundation during Roswell’s Mardi Gras celebration and provided hair services for a Miss Pre-Teen Pageant. The baskets they donate include keratin treatment, flat irons, shampoos, make-up and other hair care products worth up to $700 a basket, and bidding can go as high as $1,500. Owner Kelly Owens said she wants to make an impact on the community after the previous salon she worked at did not. “I’m in charge now, so I want to do something different,” she said. “Because we didn’t do any of that, it was like, ‘come in and do hair.’ They didn’t train their staff to go out and get involved.” Hazel Minx has focused on partnering with area schools, including a special teambuilding exercise they put on for teachers. In the exercise, local teachers can come in, pair off in teams of two, get a crash course of the salon’s products and procedures and give each

other haircuts and other treatment, Owens said. The team that performs the best also gets a basket of haircare products, and each teacher gets a discount
for their next visit. The salon also has a special Neighborhood of the Month promotion. Clients can nominate a neighborhood by writing what makes it special. Residents of the winning neighborhood can receive discounts for the rest of the month. May’s nominee was Chartwell, down the street from the salon. They initially found people and which neighborhoods they were from through the Nextdoor app to figure out which neighborhood to nominate. “All we’ve been doing is just working for nothing,” Owens said. Owens said they choose to partner with other businesses and community events to get their name out. They have also donated haircuts for a recent Girl Scout father/daughter dance, the Barnwell Elementary School carnival and co-hosted Hotworx’s grand opening in their same shopping center. The salon also plans to partner with the Special Olympics this summer. They have a promotion for client’s businesses, where clients can put their business card in a bag for a chance to win a surprise visit to their office with gift bags and discounts that month. They show up at their office with flowers, gifts and embarrass them, Owens said. The salon would also like to do something for animals at some point, said Owens, who lets her own French bulldog hang out in the salon while she works. Hazel Minx has donated gift baskets to the Atlanta Humane Society, but she would like to do more this summer, she said.

City OKs traffic easing plan for area along Buice Road By CONNER EVANS newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — After five years of discussions, the Johns Creek City Council voted 5-2 May 20 to accept a bid for $589,743 with CMEC to install new traffic easing measures along Buice Road. The construction plan is an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Alpharetta which will pay $250,000 toward the plan. Traffic calming measures will include mini-roundabouts, new medians and the removal of speed humps along Buice Road in the Pinewalk subdivision. The road will also be resurfaced. The road connects to two heavily traveled main streets: Jones Bridge Road and Kimball Bridge Road. Council members Chris Coughlin and John Broadberry voted against the motion, saying they think the job could have been performed at a lower cost. “I cannot support the motion as I’ve expressed in the past work sessions,” Coughlin said. “We probably could’ve gotten this done by — reducing by a factor of 10.” Councilwoman Stephanie Endres said she was banking on the fact that

While an outright ban might be a little extreme, I am definitely against pineapple pizza on my personal palate. Many who share my position are grossed out by the thought of cooking an acidic fruit on top of cheese, tomato sauce and bread. And when you describe it in that way, it does not sound too appealing. While I do not particularly care for the taste, my true gripe with pineapple on pizza JOE PARKER is that good pizza, I mean really good pizza, Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com does not need any toppings. Give me a great tasting dough cooked crispy, high-quality mozzarella, a well-spiced tomato sauce that is neither sweet like ketchup or an acidic punch like tomato paste, maybe a little bit of basil and I argue, what else do you need? Throw pineapple on that is superfluous and ruinous. Now I am not just someone with an opinion on the matter. As a former professional cook who spent many years making pizzas, I have tried just about every combination of toppings imaginable. The Cornish game hen and blueberry compote pie was a particular standout in the “unusual toppings” category. Now, I say to each their own when it comes to what toppings they want. But I stand firm that, for me, pineapple will not be one of them. I will argue that good pizza does not need fruits, vegetables or even meat to be good pizza. Good pizza is just that. Also, the Cornish game hen/blueberry compote pizza wasn’t too bad.

President Johannesson was right to apologize Just two years ago, Iceland’s president made international headlines and agreed that he went too far in his comments on a sensitive and controversial topic. If you spend any time at all on the internet, you know what I’m talking about. It’s possibly the most hotly contested topic that cycles through social media every few months. Yes, I’m talking about pineapple on pizza. Julia Grochowski Should it be allowed? Should it be, as Iceland’s president said, banned? Reporter julia@appenmediagroup.com I have a strange relationship with the humble pineapple. I don’t like it cold. It’s the first and only thing I pick out when presented with some sort of fruit mix. With salsas, I’ll stick with mango, thank you. And you won’t see me drinking anything with pineapple any time soon. Hot pineapple, however? Slap that on my plate. Some grilled pineapple rings on meat or a sandwich pairs beautifully. Pineapple on pizza is no different. It’s a lovely burst of sweetness and texture that brings life to an otherwise ordinary slice of pizza. Sweet and salty is a classic taste profile for a reason. The Hawaiian pizza NIMBYs (or should it be NIMPYs?) might try to convince you otherwise. But just remember that it comes down to a matter of taste. And some people have scorched their taste buds to oblivion on flavorless pizza. It’s not their fault. Besides, pizza-making is an ever evolving artform where the topping possibilities are only limited by our imaginations. Who are we to police what can and can’t go on a pizza? If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the fiasco with Iceland’s president, it’s that I need to know our local elected officials’ opinions on pineapple pizza. So, anyone want to weigh in?

Apartment List, which tracks rental trends in hundreds of U.S. cities, says Alpharetta rents are up by 4.4 percent in June compared to the same time last year.
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A national data service that tracks trends in the rental market announced this week that Roswell and Alpharetta are among the state leaders in average annual price growth for apartments. The news comes in the wake of efforts by a number of North Fulton cities to address affordable workforce housing. Apartment List, which tracks rental trends in hundreds of U.S. cities, says Alpharetta rents are up by 4.4 percent in June compared to the same time last year. Currently, median rents in Alpharetta stand at $1,280 for a one-bedroom apartment and $1,480 for a twobedroom. It is the fifth straight month that the city has seen rent increases after a decline in December. Roswell also recorded one of the state’s sharpest increases in rental rates. Year over year, apartment rents rose by 6.3 percent. Figures for June from Apartment List show current median rates in Roswell stand at $1,290 for a one-bedroom apartment and $1,490 for a two-bedroom. Both cities are near the top of the list in median apartment rates for those Metro Atlanta cities included in the survey. The price of home ownership also remains high among North Fulton cities compared to the surrounding area, although the surge in values seen in recent years has leveled off. Trulia places the median sale price of a home in Roswell at around $386,000, a 2 percent increase from the same period last year. Alpharetta’s median sales price stands at about $379,000, a
decline of about 2 percent year over year. In Alpharetta, city leaders are in the beginning stages of developing a strategy to provide affordable housing to its growing workforce. Right now, the city estimates that 94 percent of workers commute into Alpharetta while the other 6 percent of employees live within the city. Moreover, a 2015 Brookings Institute study ranked Atlanta-Sandy SpringsRoswell 10th in the nation for the decline in the number of average jobs near residents. The figures were based on numbers from 2000 to 2012 and showed a decline of nearly 15 percent over that span. As of late, Alpharetta city leaders have slowed development of high-density housing —generally less expensive to own — and apartments to a trickle compared to recent years. At a meeting before the City Council in January, State Sen. Brandon Beach, an Alpharetta resident, expressed frustration at the state of the housing market in the city. Beach said the city has essentially locked out a younger generation by restricting high-density developments. But the City Council has made some inroads. Part of the current plan for redevelopment of the North Point corridor includes a number of apartments and townhomes, elements the city says are part of an overall strategy to revitalize the area. Also, just last November, the City Council approved amending the Comprehensive Land Use Plan to allow for construction of a 122-unit residential subdivision within a gated community on Haynes Bridge Road near Devore Road. The development will include 30

Just last month, the developer for the project, The Providence Group, announced it plans to offer the properties for sale this winter, and prices should start in the low $300,000s. “We are proposing a 122-home product mix for the community that will be a blend of two and three-story townhomes, along with a new stacked flat condo building that will enable us to reach a price point of just over $300,000 which, in this submarket, is not currently available for new construction,” said Jeff Kingsfield, CEO of The Providence Group. “This product has had a proven track record of success, and we anticipate seeing a strong interest from both millennial and move-down buyers seeking a value-oriented housing alternative at the center.”

CIDs sprout up and work wonders around Atlanta I want to warn all of you, this article caters pretty much to community development nerds. But even if you aren’t one, even if you are just someone who lives in a community, you may very well be Geoff smith interested in hearAssurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com ing about something that spends money to improve your community without using your tax dollars. Right? I’m talking about Community Improvement Districts, or CIDs. I was lucky enough to have Perimeter CID Executive Director Ann Hanlon on my radio show last week. Having served previously in the same position of the North Fulton CID, Hanlon has been an integral part of several impactful North Fulton projects that no doubt most of you have seen and used. In short, CIDs are pretty simple. They are an organization that manages money collected annually from commercial property owners within a specific geographical area. To the commercial property owners, it is an added tax whose dollars can only be spent in the geographical area they are in. Have you ever wondered why all of the Ga. 400 exits in Alpharetta look well maintained and landscaped compared to the Holcomb Bridge Road exit in Roswell? It’s because the Alpharetta exits are part of the North Fulton CID, which maintains them. Did you wonder how the new bridge on Encore Parkway connecting Westside Parkway to North Point Parkway went up so fast, and is also one of the nicest bridges anywhere in North Fulton? It’s because the project got much of its initial funding from the North Fulton CID and was managed by Hanlon when she was director there. The Encore Parkway bridge is a shining example of how impactful and useful a CID can be. The need first came up by listening to the property owners. North Point Mall was sitting right across
Ga. 400 from the newly named Ameris Bank Amphitheater (formerly Verizon). There were hundreds of townhomes and condos around the amphitheater, but no one wanted to walk across the existing bridge to go to the mall. Likewise, residents on the other side had no desire to walk across it to go to the amphitheater. So using money from the CID, they designed the current bridge, which is one of the most picturesque bridges in North Fulton with pedestrian and bike lanes. Once bridge construction started, developers almost immediately began building additional townhomes and condos along Westside Parkway. And two years later, North Point Mall began reconstruction that will re-shape the way it operates. Because the project had an independent director, Hanlon, who really only answered to the property owners and community leaders on her board, she could move quickly and efficiently to bring parties together to make it happen. Having initial designs in hand goes a very long way when you approach entities like the Georgia Department of Transportation for funding help. As does you being a CID and giving those entities confidence that the project won’t get derailed by issues that most city and county governments have to face, for example. In the end, Hanlon was able to get help from several entities to fund the project, and they hired the City of Alpharetta to manage the work. Almost 30 CIDs exist throughout the metro area, and all of them have success stories to tell. One of the biggest advantages to having a CID is that you have a dedicated person, or group of people, who are solely focused on promoting economic development for a specific geographical area. The Gwinnett Place CID oversees an area along Pleasant Hill Road near I-85 that was lined with failing strip centers. To inspire redevelopment, they developed a strategic plan for that area, making sure to get buy-in from the Gwinnett County Commission along the way. The plan focused on improving traffic flows, promoting pedestrian access, im-
proving streetscape design, and creating a bigger “desirability of property for redevelopment.” Once the plan was complete, they reached out to 71 developers around the world, and promoted the opportunities that exist within its footprint. Then, in 2016, a developer approached them about a particular site, whose then-owner was filing for bankruptcy. CID executives introduced the new developer to economic development employees at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, Gwinnett Planning Commission and Gwinnett Commissioner Jace Brooks to “find out what the community want(ed) for that 32-acre piece of property,” said the CID’s Executive Director Joe Allen in a 2016 article in the Gwinnett Daily Post. And last year a plan was submitted that included 776 residential units across three buildings that include lofts and town homes. There also will be a 120-room hotel, a food hall, a theater, a plaza with greenspace, and over 100,000 square feet of retail and office space. As you can tell, I’m a big fan of CIDs and thoroughly enjoyed getting to talk to Hanlon about what she did at the North Fulton CID, as well as what exciting things were happening in the very well-funded Perimeter CID. The Perimeter area is one of the fastest-growing business districts anywhere in the metro area and it was great to hear about what things Perimeter CID was doing to try to keep up. This will generate a lot more interest in the solutions you could offer them. Learning what your clients are currently doing by asking good questions will allow you to identify opportunities to facilitate the changes they need to make and is a pivotal part of the sales process. Solutions you offer to change the status quo are far more readily accepted by following this approach. Challenging your customers the right way can help you get more business.

For this reason, first-time home sellers, “what is the best season to sell a home?” Here, in Atlanta’s Rawlings healthy real estate market, there is rarely a “bad” time to sell; however, different times of year have certain advantages and disadvantages. Let’s look briefly at the pros and cons of selling in different seasons. Spring: Springtime is considered by many experts to be the most optimal time to list a home for sale. Warmer weather and abundant listings tend to cause homebuyers to turn out in masse, so homes tend to sell more quickly in spring, and usually for more money. The downside is that you have more competition, and because so many people are scheduling showings with different levels of interest, you may have to weed through a number of prospects to find serious buyers. Summer: During the summer months, home sales may level off slightly from the springtime rush, but not by much. Listing a home in summer still gives you the benefit of an active pool of buyers and shorter times on the market, although more potential buyers tend to go on vacation as the hot weather drags into August. Fall: As people return to school and work from summer vacations, we generally see a slowdown in the real estate market during the fall. That doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a bad time to list, though. Especially in a city like Atlanta, where autumn weather is quite mild and pleasant and fall foliage lasts until mid-November. Even if it takes a little longer to sell, you can still expect plenty of prospective buyers to take interest in your house. Winter: Winter is traditionally the slowest time of year for real estate, and for this reason, some consider it the least desirable season to try to sell a home. Original Johns Creek K-9 officer passes away By CONNER EVANS newsroom@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The retired K-9 Dano, one of Johns Creek’s original K-9 officers, passed away at 12 years old on May 26. The Czech Shepherd retired in 2017 after eight years of service with Sgt. James Zebley. Together, Dano and Zebley found illegal drugs, lost children, missing endangered adults and criminals. The duo found 15.5 pounds of marijuana, 2 kilograms of cocaine, 1.76 pounds of methamphetamine and 2.2 pounds of heroin since Dano’s career started in April 2009. “K-9 Dano was a true warrior, an ultimate sheepdog,” Johns Creek Police Department wrote in a Facebook post commemorating Dano’s death. “He for sure has crossed that rainbow bridge and welcomed to Valhalla.” The department also posted the poem “Guardians of the Night” in the post to honor Dano. Zebley and Dano first met in Virginia
Beach when the canine flew in from the Czech Republic. All of Dano’s commands are in Slovak, Zebley said during a demonstration. When he wasn’t in the streets trying to find criminals, lost citizens or drugs, Dano would help Zebley perform demonstrations for students in the Johns Creek area. These included showing how Dano could find drugs in a room, biting someone’s heavily padded arm and talking about Dano’s car — a special Chevrolet Tahoe built with a flat backseat area equipped with a water bowl, fan and temperature control system. There were three occasions in the field when Dano had to bite someone, Zebley said during a demonstration. After the second incident when a man was being aggressive to police and Dano had to bite the man’s arm to restrain him, the man he bit told police how well trained he thought the dog was, Zebley said. He stopped biting as soon as the man stopped fighting, he said. The dog was bored at the beginning

The event will see co-ed teams of four to eight adults compete in CrossFit-style athletic skills such as sit ups, tire flips, squats and pull ups. Special Olympics Georgia provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type
sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Nearly 30,000 athletes, from toddlers to seniors, participate in its 25 sports programs each year. Local athletic programs rank among state’s best By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Local schools earned high rankings in the 2018-19 Director’s Cup, which awards the top boys, girls and overall athletic programs based on each program’s top performing sports throughout the athletic year. Cambridge won its first overall Director’s Cup, taking the crown as the top program in Class 6A this season. The Bears girls athletics won the school’s second girls cup in three years. The Bears’ rise to the top of the overall standings was led by state championships from its girls cross country and girls tennis teams. The cross-country team repeated as 6A champs, while the tennis squad won its second title in three years.
The girls score was bolstered by a state runner-up finish in track and field and top-five state placements in gymnastics, cheerleading and swim. The Cambridge boys score was led by a podium finish in cross-country, a semifinals appearance in soccer and positive performances in golf, swimming and wrestling. The boys also earned points with playoff appearances by its lacrosse, basketball and baseball teams. Also from Class 6A, Johns Creek placed sixth overall in the Director’s Cup standings with the girls placing fourth. The Gladiators secured four state titles in the 2018-19 season, including boys swim, boys tennis, boys golf and girls golf. The girls program also earned significant points in swim, cheerleading, crosscountry and lacrosse, and a berth in the state semifinals in soccer.
Alpharetta, winners of last year’s overall 6A title, placed 21st overall, led by a state championship in boys track and a state runner-up finish in girls swim. The Raiders finished just ahead of region rivals Centennial and Northview, who placed 22nd and 23rd overall. Centennial’s overall score was led by deep playoff runs in boys lacrosse, girls tennis and a state championship in girls swim and dive. Northview placed four points behind Centennial with state runner-up finishes in boys and girls tennis and girls golf. Chattahoochee placed 29th out of the 57 schools in Class 6A with playoff runs in boys soccer and basketball and a strong showing in girls swim and dive. In Class 7A, Lambert’s run atop the overall standings ended at four seasons this year with the Longhorns placing second in the overall standings behind Walton.
Despite finishing second, Lambert completed another highly successful campaign in the 2018-19 season. The Longhorns won state titles in boys soccer, cheerleading, girls tennis and girls golf with state runner-up finishes in gymnastics, boys lacrosse, girls soccer and boys swim. Milton finished fourth in the overall standings, the school’s second straight top-5 finish. Milton’s overall score was led by the school’s first football state championship and 13th title in girls lacrosse with girls tennis, volleyball and co-ed cheer teams placing as state runner-up. West Forsyth was sixth in overall scores behind its third straight gymnastics state championship and first boys golf title. South Forsyth’s boys cross-country earned a state championship and girls cheer and cross-country finished as state runner-up to put the War Eagles at eighth in the overall standings.

Semi-pro football team to call Chattahoochee High home Georgia Cardinals developmental team to compete at school By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Football fans wanting to attend a Saturday game will no longer have to travel outside of North Fulton or Forsyth County. The Georgia Cardinals recently announced the team will be based out of Chattahoochee High School beginning in the 2019 season. The Cardinals are a program within the Developmental Football International organization, which serves as a platform for experienced athletes to train and play to earn a shot at entering the college or professional ranks in the Arena Football League or the Canadian Football League. The Cardinals were formed in 2012 and joined DFI for the 2018 season. The league also has teams based on the west coast and Florida, Alabama, Texas and North Carolina. The team will play its home games on Saturdays throughout the season. While the full schedule has not been

finalized, the Cardinals will kick off their 2019 campaign Sept 7 at Chattahoochee. Cardinals’ Marketing Director Cheryl Hernandez said the games will have a family atmosphere with halftime entertainment in addition to on-field play. She said a family of four can attend a game for around $30. The team was founded in 2012 by husband and wife Leonard and Cindy Holmes of Forsyth County. Leonard, a former college and professional player in arena football, brought a knowledge of the sport while his wife brought business savvy, and the organization was created with an emphasis on high qual-
ity football, faith and giving back to the community. Leonard said there were many incentives to move the Cardinals to Chattahoochee. “I always knew about the facility, and they have made some great updates with the new turf and weight room,” he said. “This is also an area where we know a lot of people, there is a good economy and a lot of youth organizations and charities we can be a part of. Chattahoochee has been great supporters for us.” Leonard said the move will allow residents of North Fulton and Forsyth County to witness high-caliber athletes compete in a unique league. “The league is all about getting a second chance,” he said. “We have had players who are homeless and great athletes. They have a passion and love for the game, but people don’t always know their situation. We also have players who maybe didn’t have the grades to get into college, but they may be a 5-star athlete.” Leonard said a player on the team
this year was with Troy University, but changes in the coaching staff left him without a spot on the Trojans’ roster for 2019. Eight players on last year’s squad are now in the arena football ranks and a few other players returned to collegiate programs. Cardinals’ head coach Don Hernandez, who has 45 years of coaching and playing experience, said players will focus on technique training, but a strong emphasis of the team is developing players off the field as well. “It’s a lot more than football,” he said. “We are building character and building men, football is just a tool.” Cheryl Hernandez said the team will continue to benefit and support local charities. The organization has been active with the Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Jeffrey Campbell Evans Foundation and Toys for Tots while being active with local youth sports organizations and camps. Denmark placed 15th overall in Class 4A in the school’s first athletics year with state runner-up finishes in baseball, cheerleading and gymnastics. Fellowship Christian was the top Class A school in overall standings, which are not separated into public and private categories. The Paladins reached the quarterfinals of the girls lacrosse playoffs and the football, baseball, volleyball and boys lacrosse teams had strong postseason runs to put Fellowship at 32nd in overall scores. Led by a state championship in boys basketball, St. Francis placed 44th out of 99 schools. Mount Pisgah was 52nd in overall scores with Pinecrest Academy three spots behind and King’s Ridge in 69th.
