Thieves ransack house, leave with empty safe JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police were dispatched to a residential burglary along Waits Ferry Crossing on April 24.

The homeowner called 911 after noticing suspicious activity on his Ring doorbell camera.

When officers arrived at the home, the front door was unsecured, and a rear glass door had been shattered.

Inside, the home had been rummaged through, and it appeared suspects made their way into an attic crawl space. There were also wires cut on the side of the home. The victims said an empty safe in their child’s bedroom had been stolen.

Atlanta woman charged with sending lewd photos JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — An Atlanta woman was arrested April 24 on Lakefield Drive, more than two months after

she allegedly sent threatening messages to her former boss.

Sharina Daniel Harris, 26, was charged with prohibition on nude or sexually explicit electronic transmission. According to police, the victim reported harassment Feb. 17, telling an officer he’d fired Harris in late January, and she began sending him messages about money she felt he still owed her.

In the texts and emails, Harris claimed “she better get her money or else” and warned the victim to “watch out,” according to the arrest report.

Shortly after the man blocked her phone number, he said Harris began texting and emailing his girlfriend and sent the woman a naked photo of him. The victim told police Harris likely got the lewd picture from her sister, whom he used to date.

Moe’s restaurant reports loss of cash in burglary

Major transportation projects divide City Council members

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council had a hefty discussion regarding road work projects during an April 26 work session.

The council was presented with three projects — bridge replacement on Buice Road, sidewalks along Rivermount Parkway and the widening of Haynes Bridge Road.

Currently, the bridge on Buice Road over Johns Creek does not meet structural standards for the volume of water flowing underneath.

During large storm events, the bridge causes flooding upstream and consistently experiences water levels rise to the top of the roadway, creating the potential for road closure.

Council members are set to approve engineering for the project at their next meeting on May 10.

This project calls for reconstructing the bridge within its existing footprint but at a higher elevation to minimize flooding conditions. The construction would require closing the road to traffic for approximately three months. During that time, Buice Road would be closed between Farmbrook Lane and Twingate Drive, and traffic would be detoured to Spruill Road and Old Alabama Road.

The bridge would also add pedestrian

connectivity over Johns Creek and meet current roadway and safety standards.

While council members agreed to advance the bridge replacement, they were more divided over the other two transportation projects.

The council split 3 to 3 on whether to follow staff’s recommendation to enter the engineering phase for sidewalks along Rivermount Parkway from Yukon Drive to Barnwell Road. The road has 18-foot-wide lanes, providing the city options for either traditional or multi-use pedestrian walkways. Standard roadways are 11 to 12 feet wide.

The cost has been estimated at between $350-$400,000.

But residents are divided. Following a public input meeting, the city received 72 written responses. Most, 31 in all, favored the traditional concrete sidewalk option. Twenty opposed the sidewalks altogether, and some of them recommended the city instead turn its attention to sidewalks along Barnwell Road instead — a project estimated at about $5 million.

Council members were split 3-3 on the issue, and most said they would like greater clarification from the half-dozen or so property owners who would be directly affected by the pedestrian strip.

City launches Map Our Tree initiative and app

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek residents looking for a fun outdoor activity that benefits the city can turn to the new Map Our Trees city initiative.

Johns Creek parks contain thousands of trees, but the city does not have a current inventory of tree types and locations. A tree inventory with this information can help the city maintain trees and plant more in the future.

“It’s good to know what types of trees we have planted where, because if one tree is infected by some kind of specific type of insects or something, and there are a lot of the same species near it, the rest of them can catch it,” said Nick O’Day, the city’s chief data officer. “That tree inventory helps us know where those kinds of things are happening, and it also helps us understand where we have specific trees,

especially in our parks, and where we could plant new or different ones to complement the different varieties that we have.”

The traditional method of creating a tree inventory involves either city staff mapping trees individually or hiring experts to make the rounds — a timeconsuming and expensive process. The city used its Geographic Information System mapping software to create an app that allows users to scan the leaves of trees and map their location and species.

The app “Map Our Trees” is available for smartphones. Residents can tour any of Johns Creek’s parks, Newtown, Ocee, and Shakerag or visit the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve to help with the tree inventory.

Johns Creek appoints new city clerk

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The City of Johns Creek has named Allison Tarpley city clerk.

The appointment ends a four-month search since the retirement of Joan Jones, one of Johns Creek’s first employees.

Mayor Mike Bodker nominated Tarpley, who is currently the city clerk in Doraville, to the position during a special called meeting April 19.

The Johns Creek City Council unanimously approved the nomination.

Tarpley previously worked for the City of Johns Creek for 13 years, serving first in the Community Development Department and then as assistant city clerk from 2017 to 2020. Tarpley moved to her current city clerk position in the City of Doraville in June 2020. She is a native Georgian and graduate of Berry College.

Bodker said that he was confident in her skills.

“We’ve had an opportunity to vet a number of qualified candidates and having gone through that process, I feel confident that Miss Tarpley will be able to step in,” he said.

The city clerk provides support to

the mayor and council and maintains their records, such as the agenda and minutes, ordinances and contracts.

Additionally, the city clerk serves as election superintendent and works with Fulton County Elections Division in conducting municipal elections.

The city clerk is also designated under Georgia code to serve as the open records officer for the city.

Bodker said Tarpley’s experience, education and history with the city of Johns Creek and its procedures led him to nominate her for the position.

“We are very fortunate to be able to get Allison back,” Councilmember Lenny Zaprowski said. “It is great for our city.”

Jones served the City of Johns Creek for 14 years.

The council expressed their gratitude for interim City Clerk Terri Hugie, the assistant city clerk who took on the role during the search.

“On behalf of the city, I want to thank you, Terri,” Bodker said. “We know that was a tall order, considering how short a period of time you had been here before that, to jump into this role...I can’t promise what the next few weeks will be like as Allison transitions from Doraville to the city of Johns Creek, but I can say that you’ve done a wonderful job and we really appreciate it.”

School superintendent delivers update on post-COVID strategies BY: SYDNEY DANGREMOND newsroom@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Fulton County Schools Superintendent Mike Looney says the district is addressing learning disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, and plans are in place to restore student achievement levels.

In a report to the Johns Creek City Council April 26, Looney announced updates on staff vaccinations, technology upgrades and strategies to restore academic progress stunted by disruptions from the pandemic.

While roughly 3,500 Fulton County

Schools employees were vaccinated at Mercedes Benz Stadium, Looney said he hopes more will participate. He said the district has no plans to mandate vaccinations for its more than 14,000 employees and 93,000 students unless ordered to do so by state or federal authorities.

Looney highlighted advances in the district’s technology, pointing out increases in use and availability. Bandwidth doubled, and digital resources increased tremendously, he said.

The superintendent said the district has devised a strategy to restore academic progress.

“We know that for the average

student, they’ve gained about half as much progress as they otherwise would have gained had COVID not happened in our school community,” Looney said.

The strategy features extended time for students in the classroom before, after and during summer school, small group instruction and parent engagement.

Additionally, Looney said the district is exploring a plan to use space in lower-enrollment elementary schools to relieve overcrowding in middle schools. The result would be creation of a traditional K-8 school.

“K-8 models are exactly what they

sound like, and that is a school that would serve kindergarten through eighth grade in the same school,” Looney said. “There is a lot of research that talks about the tremendous benefits from an academic perspective, from a social and emotional perspective, from a behavioral perspective and also from a community involvement engagement perspective.”

Looney said the district will consider elementary schools with a 60-70 percent capacity in communities that want to participate.

City Council members expressed their interest in the K-8 model for maximizing efficiency in local schools.

U.S. News ranks North Fulton high schools among the best

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmedia.com ATLANTA, Ga. — High schools in the North Fulton region claimed top spots nationally and statewide on the U.S. News and World Report’s list of “2021 Best High Schools.”

In its annual ranking, the magazine reviewed data from nearly 24,000 public high schools across the country and ranked approximately 18,000. The publication has compiled the annual list since 1985 using a range of factors including college readiness, math and reading performance and graduation rates.

Among the 500 top-ranked U.S high schools, Northview High led the Fulton County School System ranking 280th, followed by Chattahoochee at 327, Alpharetta at 401 and Cambridge at 456. Just out of the top 500 was Johns Creek High School at 594, with Milton at 656, Roswell at 775 and Centennial at 1,953.

Placement on the U.S. News annual list is a recognition of strong schools with a culture and climate that supports academics, said Cliff Jones, the district’s chief academic officer.

“Kudos to the staffs and students of the recognized schools,” Jones said.

“This list signals to our communities that the overall FCS K-12 academic program offers a nationally recognized rigorous and relevant learning environment for students.”

This year’s list of best high schools was based on data received from the 2018-19 school year.

Statewide, all eight traditional high schools in the North Fulton region were ranked among the top 50 out of the state’s 426 high schools. That ties

Fulton County Schools with the Gwinnett and Cobb County school systems for the most schools from one district in the top 50.

The state’s highest-ranked school was Gwinnett School of Mathematics and Science.

While the national rankings have been compiled for 35 years, U.S. News significantly changed the criteria in 2019 to open the survey to more schools, including charter and magnet schools.

Prior to 2019, only about 14 percent of the nation’s public high schools were evaluated, based primarily on performance and participation in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. Today, any public high school with at least 15 students is eligible.

A statement from U.S. News noted the publication “wanted to greatly expand the number of schools that are evaluated so that there is broader differentiation among all high schools, not just those that are top performing.”

Also gone are the familiar gold, silver and bronze medal categories for schools. Instead, U.S. News numerically ranks the top 75 percent of the schools nationally, and it lists the bottom 25 percent alphabetically along with the ranking range.

Schools are now assigned a 0-100 percentile scoring system. Top-ranked Northview High School with a score of 98.43 indicates that fewer than 2 percent of all schools nationally scored higher.

Private schools are not included in the rankings because most do not administer statewide accountability tests, such as the Georgia Milestones

Georgia’s percentage of schools in the top 25 percentile of the nation puts it closer to the top of the list than the bottom. Georgia is ranked 21st out of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., with nearly 25 percent of its 426 public high schools ranked in the top 25 percent nationally.

Among Southern states, Georgia is

behind only Florida, which is ranked 6th in the nation with 36 percent of its high schools in the top 25th percentile. Topping the list of 50 is Massachusetts with nearly half its high schools making the top 25 percent. At the bottom is Maine, which researchers noted did not provide sufficient test scores to be adequately evaluated.

Secret Garden Tour draws hundreds to admire flora

By KATIE ANDERSON newsroom@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek Beautification hosted its third bi-annual Secret Garden Tour May 1.

The tour was sold out with almost a thousand in attendance.

This unique secret garden event began in 2018 to raise money through ticket sales and sponsorships for beautification projects in Johns Creek.

Johns Creek Beautification President Lynn Pennington said that funds raised will be put toward the purchase of major public art sculptures for the city, landscape beautification projects and to benefit Daffodils 4 Hope, a massive citywide planting effort to raise awareness of cancer survivorship through a partnership with CanCare.

The tour encompassed seven home gardens and the Autry Mill Nature Preserve and featured musical performances from 233 artists, including three orchestras, two high schools, local ensembles and music schools. Artists from Johns Creek were also at the homes creating art of the gardens. Artists specialized in a variety of mediums, including the metal sculptor Eric Strauss, who is completing work on the horse sculpture that will be located at the roundabout at Bell and Boles roads. This soon-to-be public art piece is being purchased by ArtSpot, a subcommittee of Johns Creek Beautification, with funds from a previous Secret Garden Tour.

Johns Creek Beautification is a 100 percent volunteer-based organization.

The garden tour was organized by 17 community members who worked for more than seven months on the project.

Over a hundred volunteers worked the weekend of the tour.

The attendees also expressed their appreciation of the event. Centennial High School students worked recording feedback at several of the homes and received positive remarks.

“I just moved here a year ago from Honolulu, Hawaii and everyone says to me ‘Oh, Honolulu! It’s so beautiful’ And then I say ‘Yeah, but Johns Creek is so beautiful,’” one resident said. “Everything here is just so lovely, and Johns Creek is just a beautiful place to live.

Coming to an event like this really helps us remember that Johns Creek needs to be kept beautiful, and supporting an event like this helps us celebrate it.”

The next tour will take place in 2023.

Veterans broaden reach to revive Old Soldiers Day Parade

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A group of veterans has formed two fronts to revive the Old Soldiers Day celebration, a tradition in Alpharetta dating back 100 years.

Members of Alpharetta American Legion Post 201 have scheduled a meeting for next week to continue mapping strategies to raise funds and support throughout North Metro Atlanta to stage the event this August.

Up until last year, Alpharetta’s Old

Soldiers Day had been held continuously on the first Saturday of August since 1952.

The commemorative service included a parade, keynote speakers and food, but it was canceled in 2020, primarily because of COVID-19.

The Legion also found itself without its key sponsor, the City of Alpharetta, which pulled its support because of legal issues associated with the Sons of Confederate Veterans who had petitioned to participate.

“There are so many people pulling for us,” said American Legion member Roger Wise, who sits on the committee organizing

the revival. “We’re all family. This parade belongs to the Northern Arc.” Right now, the committee includes members from Roswell, Alpharetta and Johns Creek, but members say they plan to reach into Cobb and Gwinnett counties for support.

The plan is to expand Old Soldiers Day to include and involve all veterans and citizens throughout the region. Right now, the Northern Arc Old Soldiers Day Foundation is awaiting word from the City of Alpharetta on a permit to stage the parade and outlying events. Unlike in past years, though, organizers will get no direct help from the city. That means paying for police, barricades and cleanup.

Charles Turner, chairman of the Old Soldiers Day Foundation Committee, said he estimates the group will need to raise a minimum of between $35-$40,000 to cover costs. The committee is exploring ways to draw corporate sponsors and is in the process of setting up a GoFundMe page to seek contributions.

In terms of legwork, Turner said area Rotary clubs have always supported veterans’ efforts, and the Foundation may reach out to them and other civic organizations for assistance with labor and administration.

Also in attendance at the committee meeting was Brian Weaver, a former police officer who sits on the Johns Creek City Council. Weaver suggested he could reach out to Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat, to see whether he could arrange for members of his reserves to assist. Weaver said the sheriff has spoken out about increasing the visibility of his department throughout the county.

“He wants to have a footprint all over the county, and this would be a great opportunity,” Weaver said.

Organizers say that if fundraising or labor plans fall through, the American Legion can host its own Old Soldiers Day celebration on its 13-acre grounds in Alpharetta.

Turner said they still plan to have Varsity hotdogs, either way.

Committee members also said that there is nothing forcing the American Legion to hold the event in Alpharetta. If another Northern Arc city provides more accommodations, they said, there’s no reason the celebration could not move.

The Old Soldiers Day celebration dropped squarely in the American Legion’s lap in late 2019 when the City of Alpharetta formally voted to end its partnership with the veterans’ group to stage the event.

“It’s a damn shame,” Alpharetta Mayor Jim Gilvin said following the unanimous vote.

North Fulton Chamber launches 2021 mentorship match program ROSWELL, Ga. — The Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce has launched a Mentor Match Program geared to pair its NextGen Connects young professionals with high-level professionals from a range of commercial, nonprofit and government backgrounds.

Under the Mentor Match Program, professional mentors will team with young professionals by advising and offering a firsthand look at business operations in the area.

“I am thrilled to be part of the inaugural NextGen Connects Mentor Match program,” said Jon-Paul Croom, president, Wellstar North Fulton Hospital.

“The GNFCC has long served as the premier catalyst for connecting leaders in North Fulton. I appreciate the opportunity to mentor an emerging leader and help make those connections that will serve our community in the future.”

The Grater North Fulton Chamber has retooled operations since the outbreak of the COVID19 pandemic.

As soon as fears prompted businesses to close their doors, the chamber assembled a series of business workshops online free to members and nonmembers. The topics were timely, dealing with topics like financing, securing Payroll Protection Program assistance and how to promote consumer confidence. One event featured a town hall with all five mayors from major North Fulton cities.

The Chamber also teamed with economic development heads from four cities to survey local businesses about conditions, layoffs and sentiment. It also formed its own Economic Recovery Task Force made up of public and private leaders from throughout North Fulton.

Or the LIPPERT bidding wars that stack up offers in the double and even triple digits, where buyers are waiving even the most provident of contract contingencies and forking out tens of thousands of dollars over list price to win a contract on a home.

The shortage of homes for sale in metro Atlanta predates the pandemic, and sellers are reaping the benefits in cozy terms and windfall sale prices. But even in a seller’s market, don’t assume that record-breaking results are a given, or that it doesn’t take some finesse. Read on to learn how expert agents are helping their sellers make the most of the market.

Making the Effort While more and more homes are selling in record-breaking time and for thousands above list price, getting the best price still takes considerable work. Even in a seller’s market, carefully planned and executed marketing and skilled negotiation are paramount. While it’s true that the slightest indication you may be up for selling can sometimes be enough to drive hordes of buyers to your front lawn, don’t expect that to necessarily result in the highest sale price, or even a closing. Contract drop-out rates are especially high in these market conditions because buyers are having to act quickly without the luxury of time to think things through. carefully reviewing each offer with intense scrutiny, and advising their sellers carefully on how to choose between sometimes dozens of nearly identical offers. But as fatigued buyers get more and more decided on what they want for the higher prices they’re paying, it’s imperative to seek the expert advice of an experienced agent to help you get the absolute best results. High school senior earns Gold Award JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Emily Hinckley, sophomore at Johns Creek High School and 11-year member of Girl Scout Troop 11501, has earned the Gold Award for her sustainable program, “Live Drumming.”

Hinckley held virtual drum circles with young children in Four Winds Day Camp to raise cultural awareness in her community. She said she found that many had little knowledge about cultures different from their own. The root cause was lack of exposure and education on other cultures. In her project she played drums from all corners of the world. Four Winds Day Camp will sustain her project in the coming years.

“While there was some presence of cultural knowledge in my community, I realized that there was not enough cultural awareness to where members of my community would have an easy time accepting the idea of a changing demographic and cultural attitudes,” Hinckley said. “I noticed at the core of this issue was the little education and exposure to other cultures. To address this issue, I decided to hold drum circles with young children ages 5 through 11 in various communities using drums from around the world. In addition to learning how to play these drums, the audience learns about the cultural meaning behind these drums.”

among residents over the project was wasting time. He said he would not cast a tie-breaking vote.

“We have people begging for sidewalks that are higher on the list at this point,” Bodker said. “We have people who are on the list that are fighting about it. I’m tired of wasting the citizen’s time and money with a debate.”

Bodker called for city to reallocate the $500,000 intended for the project and move it to another sidewalk project.

As it stands now, the council will explore funding other high-priority sidewalk projects.

The final project discussed at the work session was the widening of Haynes Bridge Road being advanced in the right-of-way phase after positive community input from the engineering phase.

Haynes Bridge accumulates a large amount of congestion and the project would widen the existing two-lane road to four-lanes and add pedestrian paths on both sides of the roadway. It also

includes a combination of center turn lanes, medians and turn lanes into neighborhoods to improve access. As originally scoped, the project limits were from Old Alabama Road in Johns Creek to Mansell Road in Alpharetta.

One complication arose after the City of Alpharetta expressed that they had exhausted all of their TSPLOST funds and were not able to move past the engineering phase on their portion of the project.

The council was torn on whether to begin the project without Alpharetta on board with its share.

“I would like to see the project move forward but only until Alpharetta is committed to doing their part as well,” Councilman John Bradberry said.

Councilwoman Erin Elwood said they should move forward with the Johns Creek portion, regardless of Alpharetta’s commitment to the project.

“We can’t predicate work on Alpharetta doing something,” she said.

“We have a lot of work we can be doing in that intersection... So we need to take action.”

The council did not make any final decision on the project, but it plans to revisit the item at the meeting on May 10.

Tree: Continued from Page 3 the 50 most populous trees in the Metro Atlanta. While the species of tree is important, O’Day said it is most important for the city to have an idea of the location of the trees.

O’Day said submissions can cover residents’ backyards and properties.

The more data they have, he said, the better they can understand the tree population. More submissions also feeds the app more knowledge about local tree varieties, strengthening the programming. All submissions are anonymous.

Other cities have expressed interest in using the same app for tree mapping.

O’Day said the app works outside of Johns Creek, and the data is down-

loadable, so eventually they could get a picture of the whole area.

“We invested all this time and effort building this app and making it intelligent,” he said. “We want to work together to make it smarter so that everybody can use it. We’re kind of running two different tracks in parallel, you know, we’re trying to get the public to start using in Johns Creek, while we’re also trying to get more people outside of Johns Creek to use it as well.”

In addition to working with other cities, O’Day said Johns Creek has reached out to schools suggesting they make the initiative part of the curriculum as a means of educating students on the importance of mapping trees.

The app, “Map Our Trees,” is available for free on the App Store and Google Play. A map of the logged trees can be found on the city’s website, johnscreekga.gov.

Court seeking an injunction against the city for refusing to allow the Roswell Mills Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans from displaying the battle flag in the parade.

The city argued that such flag displays had been linked to violence and disorder at similar events across the country.

Less than 24 hours before the parade was scheduled to start, the judge denied to act on the pair’s request, basically upholding the city’s position for the time. The parade went off without a hitch the following day.

But Alpharetta took the hint when Judge William M. Ray II wrote: “While the court is not ready to issue an injunction at this time, that is not to say one may not be issued in the future.”

The City Council action does not prohibit the Old Soldiers Day Parade, so long as it is organized under private sponsorship and funding. The city estimates it contributed more than $20,000 to assist with the parade.

In taking the helm, the Northern Arc Old Soldiers Day Foundation is a registered nonprofit and can write its own rules.

Alpharetta Legion Post 201 Commander Alan Dudley said every day will count, because a full revival of the parade and festivities will take months to plan.

“At some juncture, there’s going to be a drop-dead date,” he said. “We know we’re going to do something here at the Post.”

Thomas Andrew Hyatt

Thomas Andrew Hyatt, 72, of Milton, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 23, 2021, after an extended illness.

Tom was born July 3, 1948, in Canton, GA., where he was active in scouting and earned the Eagle Scout rank. He graduated from the Darlington School and Georgia Tech. Later he earned his MBA in finance at Georgia State University, where he met his wife.

He was an Army veteran and served in Vietnam.

Tom was an accomplished amateur woodworker and a member of the Peach State Chapter of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers (SAPFM). He was also an avid gardener and skier, serving on the board of the Atlanta Ski Club. He was employed at Georgia Power Company and Southern Company Services for 39 years. Tom joined Alpharetta

Presbyterian Church in 1988, where he was ordained as an Elder and served on the finance committee.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Spurgeon E. Hyatt and Grace Lorentzson Hyatt, both of Canton.

Tom is survived by his wife of 35 years, Polly Roach Hyatt, a son, Benjamin Hyatt of Decatur, GA, daughter Zada Kathryn Hyatt of Columbia, S.C., brothers Kenneth Hyatt (Anne) of Tampa, FL, and Wayne Hyatt (Margaret Vick) of Tempe, AZ, plus a host of other relatives and his beloved dog, Jake.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Alpharetta Presbyterian Church or the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance.

A memorial by reservation only (770-751-0033) will be held at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 8 at 11 a.m., followed by an outdoor reception.
