JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a string of burglaries involving the Tide Cleaners on Old Alabama Road.

The manager of the Johns Creek cleaners requested police accompaniment Jan. 12 after the Dunwoody and Roswell locations had been burglarized. The officers found a gold key in the front door and the door unlocked, according to police reports.

No one was in the building, police said, but there was damage to the rear door, tables and electronics. The safe was wide

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A manager of the Walgreens on Kimball Bridge Road called police Jan. 13 after she allegedly witnessed a man steal several boxes of Gillette razors.

The employee said that at 8:30 a.m., an unidentified man exited from the passenger’s side of a red Nissan, entered the store, walked directly to the razor aisle, removed several items from the shelf and ran out of the back emergency exit.

The manager said this has happened multiple times from someone fitting the same description. On Dec. 10, police met with employees from the same store who reported razors and other toiletries totaling $950 were stolen Dec. 8 around 10 a.m. by a black man between 5’9’ and 6’2” in his 30s.

The manager said she would have video surveillance and an itemized list of products stolen from the most recent incident.

PlayStation device missing from family game room JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman called police Jan. 13 after she realized a Sony PlayStation 4 and multiple controllers were missing from her Double Gate home.

The homeowner said there is a game room in her basement where her three children and their friends hang out.

There are other gaming devices in the room, according to the police report, but only the PlayStation and accessories, totaling $600, were reported missing.

The mother said the gaming console was last seen Jan. 7, and they noticed it was missing Jan. 11. She said the devices are no longer connected to her internet account, which leads her to believe they are no longer inside the house.

The homeowner said the basement is undergoing a renovation, but that the contractor is a family friend who works alone and she is not suspicious of him.

The manager said the coin change from three cash registers, the monitor and hard drive for the video surveillance, cleaning supplies, paper products for the bathrooms, and boxes containing sample products were missing. The total value of missing items was estimated at $240.

The manager said he suspected a recently terminated employee because he had knowledge of the business practices.

The mother and the children said they do not believe any of their friends would have taken the devices. They have not noticed any forced entry into their home.

The woman contacted a Sony representative who said they have a way to track the PlayStation but require a police report to do so.

Jewelry reported stolen after home is ransacked JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police responded to a Jan. 13 burglary at a Donnington Drive home.

The homeowners said that the husband was the last at the residents when he left Jan. 11 at 7:30 a.m. The wife arrived home at 4:20 p.m. on Jan. 13 and discovered the rear glass door had been broken and the residence had been ransacked.

The victims said because of the disarray they were not sure what had been stolen, but they did notice two watches and two gold rings were missing, worth about $1,200 total.

Windshield shattered in car burglary incident JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A man contacted police Jan. 9 to report an incident in which his rear windshield was shattered, and items were stolen from his car.

Police arrived at Cigar Merchant on Nesbit Ferry Road a little before 9 p.m. and met the alleged victim who said he arrived at the store around 6 p.m. He said he returned to his Black Yukon around 8 p.m. and noticed the rear window was shattered and a bag was missing.

He said the bag contained an iPad and a computer, worth about $1,800 total.

Police investigate theft at assisted living facility JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a possible jewelry theft at an assisted living center reported Jan. 8.

The victim’s daughter said her mother, who lives at Addington Place of Johns Creek, is missing a gold wedding ring and a pair of diamond and sapphire earrings, worth $1,100 total. The mother said she did not give the jewelry

away and that she always kept it on her dresser in the bedroom.

The daughter said that the jewelry went missing around Dec. 19. She said all of the employees have access to her mother’s room and she suspects a worker.

The manager of Addington Place confirmed there was an employee who was recently fired for check fraud but could not provide the suspect’s name.

The employee was fired in October 2018, before the daughter believes the jewelry went missing.

Police question valet in possible car burglary JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman reported Jan. 7 that $120 in 20-dollar bills was missing from her car.

The woman said that she was at Emory Johns Creek Hospital Jan. 3 at 10 a.m. and used the valet to park her car. She returned to her car a short time later, then left the state, not noticing the money was missing until she arrived in North Carolina.

The police questioned the valet who said he did not take the money. He said there is video surveillance of the valet podium and parking lot but he works alone. He said he did not remember the specific vehicle.

The owner said no one else had access to the car.

Two women suspected in shoplifting incident JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a Jan. 10 shoplifting incident in which more than $200 of makeup was stolen from the Target on Medlock Bridge.

A Target employee said he saw one white female in a red and gold letterman jacket and an Asian woman in a grey sweater and dark pants conceal several items of makeup and leave the store. He said they got into a red Toyota Corolla or an older Lexus GS350 with tinted windows and left the area going to the Medlock Bridge exit.

The employee estimates they took more than $200 in merchandise. He said they did make a debit card purchase at the self-pay checkout, but he couldn’t look up who the card belonged to.

City Council weighs in on performing arts center

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council made no promises, but offered words of endorsement to those who showed up Jan. 17 in support of a performing arts center.

Dozens of community members, many wearing white, gathered at the meeting to show their support as the council heard a presentation of a feasibility study for the project.

It was an opportunity for the council to ask questions of the consultant who conducted the study. Council members all expressed support for an arts center, but said there were still questions about how it would be funded and how much of a burden, if any, the city taxpayers would bear.

“I think that we are the perfect city for something like this,” Councilman Lenny Zaprowski said. “I don’t know how we’re going to get it, but I know you guys [the arts community] will figure it out. I’ve been consistent in saying I don’t think the city can do a whole lot, but we’ll do what we can.”

The study envisions an arts center with a 600 to 800-seat auditorium, rehearsal space, a catering kitchen and a new home for the Johns Creek Arts Center, combining visual and performing arts under one roof. An ideal space would have flexible seating in the auditorium, so the facility could be used for business meetings, weddings and a variety of performances Such a building would cost upward of $50 million, not including the cost of the site.

The consultant team interviewed business leaders to get a sense of how much arts leaders could reasonably expect to fundraise. They determined $25 million was an achievable goal.

That still leaves $25 million, plus the cost of the site. Some of the money could come from Fulton County, grants and naming rights. Another possible solution is a partnership with a mixed-used

Arts leaders said they hope part of the funding will come from the city, but the council was skeptical they could find room in future budgets.

“We don’t have $25 million,” Councilwoman Stephanie Endres said. “If that’s the expectation — support even below $25 million — we’ve got to figure out how much that is and where that’s going to come from.”

The consultants suggested an arts center would be worth the money because it would drive economic development and tourism, help recruit businesses and workers and enhance quality of life for residents.

“The return on investment from developing cultural facilities, we believe, is at least as good as investment in parks and recreation, which is something you’ve had great success with,” said Duncan Webb, president of the consulting firm Webb Management Services.

Johns Creek has committed to $40 million in parks improvements through a bond passed by local voters in 2016.

This year, the city has budgeted $7.9 million on capital expenses, nearly 10 percent of it is for park and recreation projects.

The feasibility study also looked at how an arts center could be sustained.

By reviewing the market and the existing arts programs, the consultants found a John Creek center would have no trouble drawing shows or audiences.

Among the public speakers showing their support for an arts center was Nathan Frank, the director of the Johns Creek Chorale and director of music at Johns Creek United Methodist Church, which he jokingly referred to as the “current fine arts center.” Frank said that the church hosts performances nearly every week, 41 shows a year.

“I know that you are wondering ‘Is it possible for this building to be filled up?’ and as someone whose building is filled up with cultural events every week, I say ‘yes, and you can have them,” he said.

The study recommended the center be a multi-purpose facility, hosting touring shows and corporate events as well as local performing groups. With this model, the facility could be mostly sustained by earned income, with the rest of funding coming from donations and grants.

“The earned income will never cover all the operating expenses. That’s with any facility like this whether it’s a hockey rink or a library or a convention center,” Webb said. “We have this build-

Even if everything works out in favor for the center, performing groups would have to wait until late 2022 to see it open.

The Convention and Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, the city’s Arts and Culture Board, Johns Creek Arts Center, Cultural Arts Alliance, Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra, Johns Creek Chorale and several theatre and dance schools have all thrown support behind a performing arts center.

Johns Creek’s freshmen representatives sworn in

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Johns Creek voters showed a preference for political newcomers at the ballot box last November, and Jan. 14 these state legislators were sworn in at the state Capitol.

While incumbent Republicans Sen. Johns Albers and Rep. Chuck Marin held on to their seats – both represent western parts of the city and parts of Alpharetta – Johns Creek’s other seats were taken by Democrats and first-time elected officials.

Sen. Zahra Karinshak is an attorney and U.S. Air Force veteran representing east Johns Creek and parts of Gwinnet County, and Rep. Angelika Kausche, a retired business professor, represents most of Johns Creek.

Reps. Josh McLaurin (D-Sandy Springs) and Beth Moore (D-Peachtree Corners) will each be representing parts of Newtown.

Karinshak and Kausche said their first days as elected officials were full of exciting moments.

“The swearing in was a really moving emotional moment,” Kausche said. “It really sunk in. This is real now.”

“Swearing-in day was the greatest day of my life,” Karinshak said, recalling the friends, family and mentors who were there to show their support.

“Really what I felt was the great sense of responsibility we have as elected officials to serve the people, and how important that is, and really just feeling the weight of that.”

Kausche said the first week was a little hectic, as all the new representatives were learning the ropes, while also trying to take care of administrative needs like setting up an official email

and finding an office space.

“Everybody is very collegial, helping each other out a lot, and everybody is very welcoming,” she said. “We are here to get things done for the constituents for the people of Georgia, and we all feel like, OK, this is just the way it is, but it doesn’t matter. We’ll get over this little hump and then we can get to work.”

Karinshak agreed everybody had been welcoming and that the week had been full of memorable events, like attending the governor’s inauguration.

“It’s been a great week, but we also know we’ve got work to do,” she said.

Karinshak has already faced her first political fight when the Senate adopted rules that limit the time limit for filing a sexual harassment complaint. The new rules also adds restrictions to behavior in the Senate building, prohibiting noise or signs during legislative proceedings.

Karinshak took to the podium to speak against the changes.

“That was very surreal and I can’t even describe those emotions,” she said.

“I was disappointed, very, very disappointed. But I am hopeful that we can get together with Senate leadership and discuss some changes to some of those rules.”

Karinshak also echoed Sen. Renee Unterman’s criticism of the Senate for putting few women on the most important committees or in chairman positions.

Karinshak will serve on the Senate Agricultural, Natural Resources, Special Judiciary and Veterans committees.

Kausche will be on the House Higher Education, Small Business and Natural Resources committees.

Police chief requests additional officers

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police Chief Ed Densmore has requested adding two more sworn officers to the force.

The chief made the request at a Jan. 17 work session of the Johns Creek City Council.

In October 2018, two Johns Creek police officers were called up for activity duty and are on a 10-month military leave. Since then, two officers have resigned, two are on administrative leave because of their involvement in a Dec. 23 officer-involved shooting and two are expected to retire soon, leaving the department down eight officers, Densmore explained.

“Right now I’m at the point with this where I have no relief factor in the organization,” he said As an example of loss of service, Densmore said when there is a possible burglary the policy is to send an investigative team to collect evidence and interview neighbors. But when staff is tight, those same burglary cases will get a business card with a case number and a “we’ll be in touch.”

The 2019 budget was adopted with authorization for 75 sworn police and nine civilian positions.

As the two deployed officers do not receive a salary or benefits, finding replacements for them is budget neutral for 2019.

The item will come up again during the 2020 budget process, with an estimated $88,000 for officers’ salaries and $145,000 for equipment.

“I know it’s kind of uncharted waters to be up here talking about staffing issues in a non-budgetary cycle, but I think it speaks to the urgency of why I’m here,” Densmore said.

The council was supportive of the

chief’s request, even asking if he needed more than two additional officers. The item will be on the consent agenda at the Jan. 28 meeting.

Densmore noted even with the ability to find replacements for the absent officers, it may be difficult to fill his staff because of competition with surrounding municipalities and a national downtrend in police recruitment, which he attributed to the danger of the job and negative public perception of police.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, the number of fulltime police officers in the country decreased by 23,500 from 2013 to 2016.

Over the same time the population increased by 7 million. The number of officers per 1,000 residents decreased steadily from 2.42 in 1997 to 2.17 in 2016.

Also at the Jan. 17 meeting, the council considered widening the intersection of Medlock Bridge and State Bridge roads to six lanes all ways as an interim solution for the busy junction.

The public works department requested $300,000 to move forward with the design phase, which includes public input sessions.

The council also moved the item to the consent agenda at the Jan. 28 meeting.

The council heard three zoning cases during its regular meeting. A Shakerag townhome subdivision was denied after the developers requested to have it withdrawn.

A fencing academy in Technology Park was approved, in line with the recommendation of city staff and the Planning Commission.

A Racetrac convenience store was rescheduled for hearing Feb. 25 after a member of the public questioned the store’s impact on Camden Way.

Congregation plants daffodils to honor Holocaust victims

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Congregation Dor Tamid in Johns Creek joined a global memorial projects Jan. 13 by planting daffodils in honor of children who were killed during the Holocaust.

The Daffodil Project, which was started in Atlanta, aspires to plant 1.5 million daffodils around the world to honor each child killed during the Holocaust.

Daffodils were chosen for the project because the sixpointed shape of the yellow flower resembles the gold star Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust. The flowers are also a fitting symbol because they can survive in harsh atmospheres and return each year.

“Just like the Jewish people is strong and endures generation after generation, long after we’re gone these flowers will be here,” said Andrea Videlefsky, the founder of the project who spoke to the children of Congregation Dor Tamid last Sunday.

Today the project is about a third of the way to its goal, with 400,000 flowers planted across the globe, including Poland, Germany, Israel, Canada and across the U.S. The Johns Creek synagogue added about 120 daffodils to the total when children, teens and adults planted the flowers along the path to its meditation garden.

come and see. It becomes a memorial,” Videlefsky said.

The older children and teens each received a biography from the United State Holocaust Memorial Museum describing a child who died in the genocide. They were encouraged to think of that child as they were planting the flower bulb.

“When we plant them, we think about the things that have happened to us, difficult things, but also how strong we are,” Vielefsky said. “It’s not just planting flowers. There’s also difficult things happening in the world today, so we think about that too.”

Videlefsky emphasized that the Daffodil Project was not just to remember Holocaust victims, but also children who suffer around the world today and to send a message that such atrocities should never happen again. In addition to Holocaust education, Am Yisrael Chai, the organization behind the Daffodil Project, gives to programs helping children in Darfur, South Sudan and Rwanda.

“We’re teaching the children something so important with something so small,” said Molly Peled, the religious school director for Congregation Dor Tamid.

Dor Tamid’s planting day was special, because it fell near Tu BiShvat, a Jewish holiday that is celebrated by planting trees.

In Israel, Tu BiShvat is celebrated similarly to Arbor Day or Earth Day. Only warmer places like Georgia would be able to plant the flowers as late as January.

The flowers are expected to bloom in late February or March.

National search underway for Fulton Schools chief Interim superintendent likely to stay on through school year – or beyond

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — The Fulton County School System began its second semester under the direction of an interim superintendent, but plans are in place for a nationwide search for a permanent leader.

Fulton School officials expect that individual to be in place by the end of the school year, but said the system is in good hands under the leadership of former superintendent Cindy Loe, PhD. “The Board of Education is going to take the time necessary to ensure we select the best leader for our schools,” said Samantha Maxey, communications director for Fulton Schools. “We would like to resolve this as soon as possible, however, with Dr. Loe acting as interim superintendent, we have confidence the system will remain focused on providing the best education possible for our students.”

Loe served as the district’s superintendent from 2008 through 2011, but

came out of retirement with the resignation of Jeff Rose in December.

The district sent out a survey to all parents, staff, employees and community leaders asking for input on the qualities the next superintendent should possess. That survey ends on Feb. 23.

The nationwide search for the next superintendent will be led by the Fulton County Board of Education, with guidance by the board’s attorney, the firm of Nelson Mullins.

“The Board has also reached out to several national search firms,” Maxey said. “If one of those firms provides a candidate who is ultimately hired that firm will receive a $15,000 fee.”

School Board President Linda Bryant said interviews will be conducted later this winter/spring and will include site visits by School Board members to the candidates’ current communities, where the board will seek candid opinions and assessments of the candidates.

While no timeline has been established on when a new leader will be in place, Maxey said Loe will stay on until

that decision has been made.

“Dr. Loe has been a great asset to [the district] during this transition,” she said. “We do anticipate her tenure as interim superintendent will last at least until the end of this school year, but she has indicated a willingness to assist as needed until the search process is completed.”

The next superintendent will be the 9th permanent superintendent for Fulton Schools in 25 years, not counting numerous interim leaders who served during transition. That track record has some in the community questioning whether highly qualified individuals may be hesitant to throw their hat into the ring.

Maxey said Fulton Schools has a national reputation for excellence which will attract many candidates.

“Fulton County students and our staff are talented and nationally recognized in many aspects,” she said. “The right leader for our schools will welcome the opportunity to be part of our community, which includes the assets and the challenges.”

Congressman Woodall elected to serve on House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee WASHINGTON, DC. — Congressman Rob Woodall, (R-7th), was recently selected to be a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

During his time on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Woodall was instrumental in drafting the FAST Act as a member of the Highways and Transit Subcommittee, which established a competitive grant program that awarded $184 WOODALL million to expedite construction of the new express lanes on Ga. 400. Additionally, Woodall wrote the law that protected Georgia’s water supply from congressional intervention.

Plans begin to take shape for Innovation Academy STEM high school scheduled to open in downtown Alpharetta next year

By CANDY WAYLOCK Candy@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA — As site work continues on the site of the new North Fulton STEM school in downtown Alpharetta, Fulton County Schools staff is working on the components inside the building — leadership, students and curriculum.

Recently named Innovation Academy, the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math)-focused school will open in August 2020 on the same site where Milton High School stood for nearly a century – and where the athletic fields and stadium will remain.

A second STEM high school will open in South Fulton in 2021.

Innovation Academy will open with a charter class of 450 freshman, who will comprise the school’s first graduating class in 2023, with a new class of freshman enrolling each year.

Fulton School officials say Innovation Academy will be a departure from the traditional high school model, and will likely appeal to the unique student.

“Our ideal ninth grader would be looking for something different from the normal high school experience,” explained Doannie Tran, PhD., assistant superintendent for Innovative Programs, who is overseeing the opening of the STEM school.

Innovation Academy will meet all state requirements for graduation, and the curriculum will put students on a career pathway to high-demand jobs in information technology, health care sciences and engineering.

Some elements of a traditional high school will not be there, such as a full athletic program, but intramural teams will be available. Students will not be allowed to participate in GHSA-sponsored athletics at their home schools, Tran said.

The overall curriculum will center on “design thinking” and an integrated curriculum, which is being developed by staff and external partners, including Georgia Tech’s Center for Education.

Design thinking is a problem-solving process where students will define the problem, research problem elements, ideate, prototype, choose a solution, implement the solution, and learn from the process. An integrated curriculum means concepts will be addressed across all courses.

Tran said if applications for Innovation Academy exceed 450 students for the ninth grade class, a lottery process will be used for selection.

There was some debate among the school board on who is eligible to attend the new high school if interest exceeds space.

Alpharetta board member Katie Reeves said she thinks the intent was to use the new school to help alleviate overcrowding in the high schools in North Fulton, nearly all of which are above state capacity.

She noted the state provided capital outlay funds to help build the school, in lieu of building another traditional high school in the area. Therefore, she maintains, preference should be given to students in North Fulton.

But Superintendent Cindy Loe said the process for school selection has not been finalized, with decisions still to be made on protocol. She noted it likely will not be an issue in the first year because new schools typically do not open at capacity in their first year.

Board members select ‘Innovation Academy’ as name for new school The Eagle has flown.

The Fulton County Board of Education soundly rejected naming the new STEM high school in Alpharetta Eagle Innovation Academy, despite the recommendation of the Naming Committee which convened to name the school.

Instead, the board voted 6-1 at its Jan. 17 meeting to name the school Innovation Academy. The vote had the support all five board members who represent North Fulton. Only South Fulton member, and board president, Linda Bryant cast the “no” vote, without explanation.

The Naming Committee said “Eagle” in the name honored the school history, since the school is being built on the site where old Milton High School stood for nearly a century.

However, the majority of board members said the word was too closely associated with Milton

High School and not representative of a school open to the entire region.

Alpharetta Board member Katie Reeves argued the recommendation of the committee should be honored, which is generally the board practice, and that historical nods are often part of a school’s name.

But other board members who represent North Fulton, including Julia Bernath, Linda McCain and Katha Stuart, said they were also listening to their communities which felt Eagle was too closely associated with just the Alpharetta and Milton communities.

“I appreciate the work of the committee, however I am also representing my community and my constituents,” said McCain. “I have received feedback that many are not happy with the name.”

The board first considered T.H.E. Innovation Academy, with THE representing Technology, Healthcare and Engineering.

However Roswell board member Stuart made the motion to drop the “T.H.E.” and simply call the school Innovation Academy. That measure passed.

Georgia among highest flu rates in the nation

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — Flu season is underway, and Georgia is one of 15 states with high flu activity, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

While flu can occur year round, flu season typically begins around October and reaches its peak December through February, according to the CDC. As of Jan. 5, there have been five flu-related deaths and 674 hospitalizations in Georgia this season.

Influenza, or flu, is a common contagious respiratory illness. Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, aches, chills and fatigue.

While some of the symptoms may sound like the common cold, flu can cause severe illness and even lead to death.

Compared to the common cold, flu comes on more abruptly and some symptoms are more severe, although the only way to know with certainty if you have the flu is to take a test with a healthcare provider. Antiviral drugs can lessen the severity of symptoms, shorten the time of illness and prevent serious complications

Anyone can get the flu, but children under 5, adults over 65, pregnant women and people with certain chronic medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes, are most susceptible to flu complications.

While doctors encourage everyone to be vaccinated by the end of the October, it’s not too late. A yearly vaccine is recommended to keep up immunization for everyone 6 months and older.

Last year’s flu season also hit hard; hospitalization rates were the highest recorded since 2009, according to the CDC. There were 48.8 million Americans sick with flu, 959,000 hospitalizations and 79,400 deaths. At the end of the flu season last year, 151 people had died in Georgia and more than 3,000 were hospitalized in the Atlanta area.

5K race raises awareness of teen suicide

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Will to Live Foundation is putting on its 9th 5K fun run Saturday, Jan. 26 to raise awareness of teen suicide and sponsor mental health education.

The Where There’s A Will, There’s a Way race is a staple event for the Will to Live Foundation, which was created

by Johns Creek parents in 2010 after the death of their son, Will Trautwein.

Will was 15 years old, a freshman and athlete at Northview High.

“We were just shocked by his death and obviously devastated as well,” Will’s father John Trautwein said. “We thought he was perfect. He was big and strong and healthy and successful in all walks of his life. He was an extremely popular young man, handsome, and the leader of his friends.”

Will’s friends and family turned their pain into action by creating the Will to Live Foundation. Only a few months after Will’s death, the first Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way 5K raised $25,000, enough to fund signs of suicide training for teachers and coaches in every Fulton County Public school.

This year, the foundation expects 15,000 participants and to raise at least $100,000. The money will go to fund mental illness education throughout the state.

“None of us were educated in any way, shape or form about depression or mental illness, or the fact that teen suicide is everywhere,” Trautwein said.

“Probably the most important thing I can say is my son died because his family was unaware of depression.”

Trautwein emphasized that depression, a serious mental illness that goes beyond simply feeling sad, is very common. It affects about 1 in 6 adults, according the Center for Disease Control.

Everybody knows someone who suffers from depression, but they may not realize it. People with depression often can hide the symptoms, and it’s rarely talked about because of the social stigma against it, Trautwein said.

The Will to Live Foundation’s goals are to increase awareness of teen suicide, educate on mental illness and give hope to teens. The foundation pioneered the concept of “life teammates,” friends you can talk to, depend on and face life’s challenges with.

Trautwein said the 5K is special because teenagers organize the event and make up the majority of its participants.

“The teenagers say to their family ‘Come on guys. We’re getting up early on Saturday morning and you guys are running in my 5K,’” Trautwein said. “It’s a rare event where the kids drag their parents to it.”

“Race day is such a special experience,” said Jen Usery, who runs with the Mad Mare CrossFit team each year.

“Parents and kids unite to celebrate life and say it’s OK to not be OK all the time. You walk away feeling like you’ve brought hope to the lives our children and to those affected by suicide.”

The event begins 8 a.m. Jan. 26 with the race starting at 9 a.m. near River Trail Middle School. Online registration is $25 or $20 if on a team of 10 or more. Walkup, day-of registration is available for $30.

Charities brace for impact of government shutdown

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — It’s been a month since the U.S. government went into a partial shutdown, leaving many without pay for their work.

Locally, some nonprofits are starting to feel the pressure from the shutdown and are anticipating a grave next few months, if the shutdown continues.

The Place of Forsyth County, at 2550 The Place Circle in Cumming, serves people in the area with essential needs, while teaching them to be self-sustaining.

Jacob Granados, director of operations for The Place, said right now, consequences of the shutdown have not yet reached the nonprofit.

However, if the shutdown continues, Granados said they anticipate an increase in the number of people visiting the food pantry.

There are about 3,000 Forsyth County residents who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, he said.

Right now, the food stamps many families receive are safe for February, but there are no promises for more after that.

“In response to the shutdown, the USDA is working with the state of Georgia to disperse February’s benefits this week,” Granados said. “This means that there will not be any additional benefits released in February. We are hoping that those receiving food stamps will budget and plan accordingly. Should the shutdown continue through February, there is no information on the status of March’s benefits.”

If March arrives without those benefits, Granados said he wants the community to be aware that The Place will be open and ready to assist qualifying families through their food pantry program.

Last year, The Place of Forsyth County, distributed more than $870,000 worth of food.

Each month, about 350 households make use of the food pantry, and on average 64 first time households seek out the food services.

“This may mean that community support will become even more vital,” Granados said. “In a month without SNAP benefits, those numbers would certainly increase. We are confident, however, that the Forsyth community will rally with one another to help feed those in need.”

North Fulton Community Charities, 11270 Elkins Road in Roswell, is also starting to feel the sting of the shutdown in its community.

Communications and Marketing Manager Sheila Sillitto said the group posted on its Facebook page reminding the pub-

lic of its food pantry that is open to North Fulton residents who are in need.

The nonprofit has received inquiries from government employees affected, so she said they have told them to come to the food pantry.

“We are always prepared to help those in need in North Fulton and that includes those affected by the government shutdown,” Sillitto said. “Providing food is the first line of defense for someone struggling financially, and using the food pantry frees up money to pay rent, utilities, transportation or an unexpected expense. If they need additional services, they can set up an appointment with our case workers.”

With their ears still in the northern suburbs, the area’s two U.S. representatives said they, too, hope for a resolution to the shutdown.

Rep. Lucy McBath (D-6th) said she wants leaders to do better.

“I ran for office because I knew painfully well what is at stake when politics get in the way of governing,” she said. “This government shutdown is the worst of Washington politics. The Senate is now refusing to hold a vote on the same government funding bill that it passed just last year.”

McBath said she’s heard from constituents who have been directly impacted by the situation.

“I heard from a mother in my district who is now delaying her child’s next visit to the doctor because she is a furloughed federal worker and does not know when her next paycheck will come,” McBath said. “We can and must do better, and I am calling on the Senate and our president to stop playing politics with people’s lives.”

Rep. Rob Woodall (R-7th) had a different perspective on the standoff.

“All Americans want border security and the government funded,” he said. “I am committed to ending the humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border.

I will continue to urge my colleagues, both Democratic and Republican, to come to the table and find a solution.”

Woodall said he’s tried and failed to get funding legislation passed.

“Recently, I voted to give federal employees their first paychecks of the year,” he said. “It’s disheartening to see that not a single Democrat from the Georgia congressional delegation joined me. A government shutdown brings no one joy. This is a difficult time for many folks in Forsyth and Gwinnett counties. If there is any way that my office can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.”

Altobeli’s celebrates 30th anniversary

Altobeli’s Restaurant and Piano Bar celebrated its anniversary with the Johns Creek Chamber Jan. 15.

Since 1988, Altobelli’s has provided high quality Italian food, live entertainment and welcoming service to its patrons. Located on the corner of Haynes Bridge and Old Alabama roads, the establishment is considered by many to be the cornerstone of the Newtown community.

“I really can’t say how much I appreciate the support we’ve received over the years,” said Al Bashiri, the owner of the restaurant.

Bashiri thanked his staff, from the kitchen to the servers, and the clientele who have been loyal to Altobeli’s over the years.

“I’m very blessed and fortunate to be in a nice area and to have the best staff,” he said. “There have been a lot of long hours and long days, but it was worth it every step.”

Bashiri attributed his success over the past 30 years to his hard-working

staff and to his near constant presence at the restaurant, always making sure diners enjoy their meals.

Mayor Mike Bodker and leaders of the Johns Creek Chamber gathered at Altobeli’s Jan. 15 for a ceremonial ribbon cutting, with complementary appetizers and wine.

“I may be the mayor of Johns Creek, but Al is the mayor of Newtown,” Bodker said. “Altobeli’s is an institution; it’s not just a restaurant, it’s an institution.”

“Everybody in Johns Creek knows what this restaurant is and where it is,” Chamber President Kent Davies said.

“That’s because of the great food and because you’re so supportive of the business community.”

Bashiri said Altobeli’s has tried to give back to the community by supporting local churches and charities, such as the Wounded Warrior Project and hurricane relief.

Everyone in attendance had words of praise for Bashiri’s charismatic management and fond memories of the times they’d eaten at the restaurant.

Altobeli’s was voted Best Italian Food and runner up Best Fine Dining in 2018’s Best of North Atlanta awards.

Forsyth Chamber predicts continued growth in 2019

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Economic development is booming in Forsyth County, and it is expected to only increase this year.

James McCoy, president and CEO of the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, said the statistics for 2018 were promising.

“For economic development across the board, we are seeing a major increase in not just project activity, but announcements,” he said. “We are way ahead of goal and [compared to] this time last year.”

In 2018, there were 107 project inquiries made which was a 95 percent increase from 2017.

The amount of project announcements increased 31 percent from 2017, with 38 total projects. That puts the chamber 47 percent ahead of their goal.

These announcements brought in $183.6 million of new capital investment, which was also ahead of goal, and more than 1,000 new jobs to the county.

“Last year was a record-breaking year,” he said. “This year is going to be yet another record-breaking year. We’ve been pleased with that. It tells us that what we’ve been doing is working.” The chamber is working to implement a new Economic Development Strategic Plan, which McCoy said should yield impressive results.

The chamber hired TIP Strategies to put together an “aggressive” plan, McCoy said.

The plan focuses on the fact that Forsyth County has seen incredible growth over the past few years, but now

The plan outlines challenges to address, including: • The imbalance between commercial and residential tax revenues • The shortage of housing options • Inadequate transportation alternatives • A lack of amenities, especially for younger residents • Limited economic development resources and incentives The chamber presented the plan formally to the county commission in Oc-

tober and has been gathering feedback from the commissioners, development authority, chamber board members and the community.

“The plan has really been resonating with the community,” McCoy said.

“We’ve incorporated some of the opportunities people saw in the plan.”

Later this month, McCoy said the plan will be brought back to the County Commission for their final review, presentation and endorsement. If they adopt it, McCoy said projections show homeowners in Forsyth County between

now and 2025 will see a cost savings in property taxes of $83 million.

The adoption of this plan is big for the community, McCoy said, because it will guide county officials for years.

“We have all of the necessary bones and infrastructure that businesses need to be successful,” McCoy said. “The talent pool is phenomenal and the education system is, too. It’s a community that is really rich with not just talent but also really forward-thinking business people.

We’re a really good and safe place to do business.”

Knee-deep in New Year’s resolutions Accountability Contrary to my friends who scoff and make fun of them, I’m a big believer in New Year’s resolutions. And it being mid-January, I’m knee-deep in mine.

It always takes Geoff smith a little time to get Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com used to the new year, but 2018 is finally and clearly in my rear-view mirror. That random holiday song that always seems to plant itself somewhere in my brain and play on repeat has finally faded away. This year it was “Home for the Holidays.” What do they mean when they say ‘Gee the traffic is terrific?” Is it because it’s the holidays and traffic is not as bad? Or is the singer so happy about the holidays that he’s delusional and everything, including the traffic, looks terrific to him?

If you think you know, please tell me. Either way, traffic is clearly back to normal. I made the mistake of leaving home 10 minutes later than usual this morning and it cost me 25 extra minutes in traffic.

Those who scoff at New Year’s resolutions scoff as if they don’t need them.

I’m back on my diet — earning the right to get off of it by the time Halloween rolls back around and the boys bring bags filled with candy bars into the house.

I’m back to planning out my week, hour-by-hour, and being diligent about sticking to it. No matter what the newsfeed coming out of UGA regarding the hiring of a new coach, or the commitment of another 5-star prospect says.

I’m going to continue to learn about being a better mortgage banker so I can provide a better value to the agents I work with, the clients I work with and the businesses I partner with on employee-incentive programs.

I’m going to be more visible and impactful with some of the charities and nonprofits I volunteer with. And maybe less so with others.

I’m going to be a better husband, father, son, brother and friend. I hope they are ready!

It’s going to be an awesome year

because I’m going to try to make it that way. It’s not easy to stay the course on a good resolution, but it feels necessary to at least try. For me, I feel it’s critical to at least remind ourselves, if only once a year, of what we need to be doing to get to where we want to be. If we don’t, then over time we will have forgotten where that was in the first place.

We don’t all have to be presidents, or Nobel-Award-winning scientists, or billionaires. We don’t have to invent the replacement for the smartphone, or the perfect driverless car. We don’t have to conquer the world. We just have to commit to being better. That is much easier to do and I can do it today. The rest will take care of itself.

I’ll start off by trying to write better articles for all of you. Let’s have a fantastic 2019!

Sharla Calloway, who has been the director of Volunteer Services at NFCC for almost three years, has been named director of Assistance Services. Calloway will lead a team focused on providing emergency assistance in North Fulton. As director of Volunteer Services, Calloway coordinated the activities of thousands of volunteers each year. She also started NFCC’s Poverty Simulation Program, a role-playing experience that helps the community understand the

realities of poverty.

Darlene Turk, who has been the administrative assistant to the executive director and controller at NFCC for the last four years, has been promoted to the director of Volunteer Services. Turk has over 25 years of experience in administrative and project management positions.

Ruth Font has been promoted to manager of Assistance Services at NFCC. Font has served as a NFCC bilingual caseworker for 20 years. She will work with Calloway to assist individuals and families with an emergency need in North Fulton.

There’s a lot to factor in when your older loved one starts a new exercise routine. First, check with the doctor and make sure the exercise plan is acceptable. Then remember to start slowly and ramp up each routine. The key to all of this is to really listen to one’s body. It’s normal to have some muscle soreness at first, but actual pain should not be a part of the process. That old saying about “no pain, no gain” is a fallacy.

Make sure activities are safe If your older loved one has joint issues, osteoporosis, balance problems or any other health conditions, then the activities done for exercise should be safe and chosen with those limitations in mind. Talk with their therapist or doctor about what exercises are best. The wrong choices can bring pain or injury.

If a particular type of exercise proves to be too taxing, don’t hesitate to switch to something else. Enjoyment should be part of the plan. Once they experience the benefits of exercising regularly, it’s going to be a lot easier to stick with the program.

Weight-bearing exercise is good, high impact might not be Weight-bearing exercises are exercises that cause the body to bear weight in some way. They work against gravity in order to move the body. These exercises strengthen bones and muscles, which is good. High impact exercise, on the other hand, like jogging, can be very jarring to older joints and bones. Avoiding high impact exercises is a way to also avoid injury. It can be very helpful to work with a physical therapist or a personal trainer if your older loved one hasn’t worked out in a really long time.

Sunlight and health – everything in moderation?

By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Recently, a friend of mine brought to my attention an article that made the case that regular sunlight exposure might help us live longer. This topic seems to be of broad general interest, so I thought it worth including in this month’s paper.

Dr. Taylor For years, the dermatology community has been preaching sun avoidance. This is only natural given that much of a dermatologist’s job is focused on the prevention, detection and treatment of skin cancer. The science linking ultraviolet radiation to skin cancer is solid. Melanoma has also been very strongly linked to sun burns and tanning bed use. The case is clear that sun exposure causes skin cancer.

During my residency, my attendings had us read numerous articles on vitamin D. One of the strongest arguments put forth by the pro-tanning bed community and pro-sun exposure community was that avoidance of the sun could lead to vitamin D deficiency, which leads to rickets in children, osteoporosis in adults, and a likely higher incidence of autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and possibly even a higher incidence of some non-skin cancers.

To many dermatologists, this argument seemed weak because vitamin D supplements are readily available, and it seemed that oral vitamins could simply replace the vitamin D that the sun helps provide. We could have our cake and eat it, too. Avoid the sun and take vitamin D supplements, and you’ll avoid skin cancer and avoid vitamin D deficiency.

But the plot thickens. Researchers found out that ultraviolet radiation stimulates nitric oxide production in the skin, which lowers blood pressure and may lead to a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. Because cardiovascular disease kills more people than skin cancer, the argument was made that sun avoidance might have a net effect of hurting rather than helping. Once again, the argument was made that we could simply take medication designed to lower blood pressure.

So, now, we are avoiding the sun, taking vitamin D supplements and taking antihypertensive medication.

But uh oh, additional data suggests that sun light might change serotonin

levels and improve mood and regulate circadian rhythms and assist with sleep.

But that can be fixed with medication.

So, now, we are avoiding the sun, taking vitamin D supplements, anti-hypertensives, fluoxetine, and melatonin.

But…..additional concerns keep arising – autoimmune, cancer-related, and more.

What is everyone to do?

In my opinion, the answer seems to be that we need to embrace personalized medicine and customize our recommendations for the individual.

There are unbelievable variations between levels of UV radiation in Ireland vs equatorial Africa, and we cannot expect sun light recommendations for Irish and African descendants to be identical. This is not to say that general rules can’t be created. For example, avoid blistering sun burns seems like fairly safe advice no matter who you are. However, a one size fits all approach to sun exposure is likely not wise. And it is responsible to admit that there exists a body of data and arguments that support both positive and negative effects of sun exposure.

If a patient comes to me in his 70s riddled with skin cancers on his face and scalp, then wearing hats and sunscreen, at least on the face and scalp, seems sage advice. If a young patient develops a melanoma, then avoiding sun burns and erring on the side of less sun exposure rather than more seems prudent along with very regular self and professional skin exams. For someone with equatorial African genetics, avoidance of sun might be more harmful than helpful. We just don’t know optimum doses of sun exposure, but ancestry likely informs us regarding optimum levels of sun exposure.

And who knows whether many of the positive health effects in those receiving a lot of sun came from active lifestyles and exercise. Many studies have not been able to convincingly control for exercise when quantifying health effects of sun exposure.

We likely do not need to have guilt from small amounts of sun exposure. Instead, we can enjoy the great outdoors, exercise, and the occasional ray of sun light, and we need to be honest with ourselves about our genetic heritage, our risk factors, what is hurting us, and make adjustments to fit our individual situations.

Roswell’s month-long black culture celebration kicks off

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — It’s that time of year again. One of the largest celebrations of black culture and history in the state, the Roswell Roots Festival, is about to being.

The month-long celebration has existed for almost two decades and is driven by members of Roswell’s black community.

“The goal of Roswell Roots is to raise awareness and to better connect our community as a whole,” said Beckie Hawkins, Cultural Services Manager.

“It’s an opportunity to celebrate the contributions that [the black community] has made to Roswell and bring appreciation to the black community not only in Roswell, but the culture as a whole and what it means to both Roswell as a whole and the greater region.”

Roswell Roots has always dedicated a whole month for the festival in conjunction with Black History Month. It contains events with food, music, history, education and art.

“We have something going on almost every weekend that highlights different aspects,” Hawkins said. “We try to hit every sort of aspect in terms of what is important to this community. That’s why we call it the biggest celebration,

because we do hit on so many of those facets, and it goes on the whole month.”

To kick off the festival this year, Roswell Roots will host the Jazz Vespers performance at Roswell Presbyterian Church, 755 Mimosa Blvd. on Sunday, Jan. 27 starting at 4 p.m. The free concert combines the melodic and harmonic rhythms of jazz with the Atlanta Jazz Chorus and Quartet under the direction of Dr. Dwight Andrews.

New this year is the Southern Soul Fixins cook-off. In the past, Roswell Roots has hosted a pound cake cookoff and a corn-bread cook-off. The new cook-off combines these and has added categories for meat-based side dishes SPECIAL and vegetarian side dishes. mountain bike-type trails, and the Muddy Spokes Club just may be the incentive I need to get it off the pavement and out into the woods. This club challenges you to tackle bike trails at any 12 of some 20 different state parks.

Some of the rides are easy; others are a bit more challenging. But all should be a huge amount of fun. Who knows? You might even see me out there too — I’ll be the guy who’s huffing and puffing up the hills, but I’m hanging in there!

Johns Creek sweeps Fulton swim and dive championships

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Johns Creek retained its spot atop the podium at the Fulton County swim and dive championships Jan. 10, with the boys and girls team sweeping the 18-program field.

The meet was held at the West Gwinnett Park Aquatic Center.

Girls results The Johns Creek girls bested Cambridge by 102 points to retain their status as Fulton County champs.

Addie Farrington placed first in the 200-yard individual medley and second in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Farrington, along with Amy Hitzel, Isabella Cicogna and McKenzie Rowan, captured second in the 200-yard medley relay. Rowan, Allsion Swift, Sydney Petrie and Aliya Ohayon earned third in the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay.

In individual competition, Rowan placed third in the 50-yard freestyle, and Petrie placed third in the 500-yard freestyle. Allison Swift and Rachel Schorer placed third and fourth respectively in the 100-yard freestyle.

Abby Etter placed second in the 1-meter dive ahead of Kate McKay and Haley Copeland of Cambridge.

Cambridge’s second place finish was led by Abigail Grottle who won the 200and 500-yard freestyle races. Sophomore Jayla Brown earned second in the 100yard freestyle.

Brown and Grottle teamed with Claire Kerber and Brooke McLain to capture a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Lauren Jonsson replaced Kerber for the 400-yard free relay and Cambridge placed second.

Alpharetta swept the freestyle relay races, with Liam Clarke, Phillip Kuznetsov, Nathan Jin and Charles Lu placing first in the 200- and 400-yard relays.

Lu captured an individual win in the 100-yard freestyle ahead of Clarke. He placed second in the 200-yard individual medley. Wu finished third in the 200yard freestyle and Clarke tied for second in the 50-yard race.

Milton placed 15 points ahead of crosstown rivals Cambridge to capture third with two top-three finishes. The Eagles’ Wilson Dubois finished third in the 500-yard freestyle and teamed up with Michael Critchfield, Patrick Carr and Cooper Cook for third in the 400yard freestyle relay.

Cambridge was led by Matthew Gaines who placed second in the 200- and 500yard freestyle races. The Bears also placed fourth in the 200-yard medley relay.

Deputy returns to service after surviving car crash

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth Sheriff’s Office Deputy 1st Class Rod Reeves is back on duty after recovering from a car crash more than a year ago.

It was a long road to recovery, requiring five surgeries and months of physical therapy.

In the early morning hours of Nov. 18, 2017, Reeves was on patrol when he heard a call issued to be on the lookout for an impaired motorist.

Reeves pulled over on the shoulder of Ga. 400 to scan for the vehicle. While Reeves was observing traffic, an alleged drunk driver slammed into the back of Reeves’ patrol car at a high rate of

speed.

Reeves was trapped inside his car and unconscious. A tow truck driver saw the vehicles on the side of the road, stopped and called for help.

Forsyth County Fire Department arrived and worked quickly to get him out of the vehicle. Reeves regained semi-consciousness, but was in extreme pain.

Over the next 14 months, Reeves underwent five surgeries, including a total hip replacement in June, and completed months of physical therapy.

Reeves returned to full duty with the sheriff’s office on Jan. 7. Sheriff Ron Freeman told Reeves he could pick whatever SUV he wanted if he came back to full duty. So Reeves received a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe, which he said is safer

William Madison “Bill” Harris

William M. “Bill” Harris of Johns Creek passed away on January 14 at age 86. He was born in Farmville, VA, to the late William Madison and Ann Thackston Harris. He was a 1953 graduate of the College of William & Mary. Shortly after completing his studies at William & Mary, Bill served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. After transitioning to civilian life, Bill served for many years as Director of Human Resources at a number of financial institutions in VA, NC, and GA and then as an HR consultant in private practice.

Bill served in leadership roles in many church, civic, and social organizations throughout his life. Among these were his service as Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA); as Commodore of the Fishing Bay Yacht Club; as Commander of the VFW Dunwoody Post; as Past President of the St. Andrews Society of Atlanta; as a member of the Burns Club of Atlanta.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nonnie Harris of Johns Creek; sons Clay Harris (Karen) of Virginia Beach, VA and Randy Harris (Carol Ann) of Winston Salem, NC; daughter Beth Harris of Milton; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Beverley Harris Davis (Causey) of Richmond, VA; many brothers- and sistersin-law; and eight nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Holly Harris Anderson.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 19th, at 11 AM, with a reception following, at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, 180 Academy Street, Alpharetta, GA 30009. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Alpharetta Presbyterian Church.

than the car he had during the crash “It’s incredible,” he said. “It feels good to get back to doing what I enjoy, which is serving the people of Forsyth County.”

He was working patrol at nights for the South Precinct, but he has been reassigned to the Problem-Oriented Policing Unit for the North Precinct.

“I’m excited,” Reeves said. “It’s nothing I’m really used to, ’cause typically I’ve been on the tactical side of things. I did SWAT for several years where I was on the entry team. I was a sniper for several years. I’ve always been used to the tactical aspect of it.”

Over the more than a year it took Reeves to recover, the outpouring of support from the community was strong.

One of the most notable honors he received happened in February of 2018 when the Sheriff’s Office bestowed him with a Purple Heart.

“I couldn’t even measure the amount of support I got from the community, agency and outside agencies, even outside of the state,” Reeves said. “It was incredible. It was an eye-opener for me because I had only been on service for five months. No one really knew who I was until this accident. After they found out it was someone associated with the sheriff’s department, everyone opened up their kitchens and wallets and did everything they could to help me and my family.”

Reeves is married and has three children. All were impacted by the crash.
