Woman loses thousands to unfinished renovations JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman reported Jan. 9 that a contractor took $6,000 from her and did not complete the work.

In October 2019, the woman said she made an agreement with the contractor to remodel the home.

Over the next month, the man came over for a few hours a day.

The contractor then stopped coming to the home and contacting the woman at the end of November.

The man had left a large hole in the master bedroom, cut through support beams in a shower and installed tiles incorrectly that had to be removed, the woman said.

The woman said she tried contacting the contractor several times over the past two months, but he is refusing to answer her calls.

She said her new contractor told her the damage to her home would cost more than she had originally budgeted.

Suspected thief stopped by wary store employees JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are investigating a Jan. 6 incident in which a man was suspected of attempting to steal

Man loses thousands to fraudulent check JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — An Alpharetta man contacted police Jan. 9 after he realized he had lost almost $10,000 to fraud.

The man had previously mailed a $2,000 check in December and dropped it in the mailbox on State Bridge Road.

On Jan. 7, the man received a call from his bank about someone attempting to cash a suspicious $10,000 check.

The man said it was fraudulent, but the money had already been pulled out of his account.

Woman’s email hacked, used to solicit gift cards JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman contacted police Jan. 6 after she realized her email had been hacked and someone had been spamming her contacts.

On Jan. 3, someone hacked the woman’s email account and used it to send emails to her entire address book.

The emails stated she needed help and asked people to purchase gift cards and

provide the numbers to her.

All of the woman’s emails were rerouted to her trash folder.

The woman noticed when she was contacted by her boss about the email.

She attempted changing her password, but the emails continued.

Woman finds fraud on credit report JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek woman reported Jan. 7 that she had spotted several instances of fraud on her credit report.

When the woman checked her credit report recently, she noticed suspicious activity.

The woman found several accounts opened using her information along with almost $4,000 in collections.

The woman froze her credit before contacting police.

Car parts stolen from man’s vehicle JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man contacted police Jan. 9 after he realized several parts from his car had been stolen.

The man said sometime between Jan. 7-8, someone stole four fender liners off his car. He noticed the passenger side fender liners had gone missing on Jan. 7. The others on the driver side were still in place.

The next day, he saw the driver side fender liners were gone.

Council moves forward on Bell Road roundabout Also: new council members sworn in

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek City Council, including newly sworn-in members Brian Weaver and Erin Elwood, unanimously authorized the Public Works Department to move forward on a roundabout project on Bell Road.

The council authorized up to $200,000 to be used for right of way acquisition.

The project is funded by the transportation sales tax, or TSPLOST. This is the last stage before construction begins.

trance of Old Homestead Trial and the future Cauley Creek park. The project was chosen to improve safety along the Bell Road corridor and to anticipate the opening of the park.

The roundabout is part of a series of improvements to the Bell-Boles corridor.

The first project, intersection improvements at Bell Road and McGinnis Ferry, moved to the construction phase last year. For about $1.7 million, the city will extend the northbound right-turn lane on Bell Road and add through lanes on McGinnis Ferry.

More intersection improvements are in the design stage at Bell and Medlock Bridge Road and at Boles and Abbotts Bridge. There are also plans to replace the bridge over Cauley Creek tributary and add a roundabout at Bell Road and Rogers Circle South.

Fulton County commissioners delay action on 2020 budget

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY — Fulton County commissioners are the final stages of locking down the county’s 2020 budget, but first, they have to decide how to spend a $20.4 million windfall.

The total budget is $1.78 billion, an increase of about 6.2 percent over the 2019 budget. The general fund budget, which pays for day-to-day operation of county government, sits at $758 million, up 5.5 percent.

The budget projects the county will be able to lower its property tax rate from 9.89 mills based on the multi-year financial plan and projected growth within the county. However, the tax rate will not be set until this summer.

The budget includes priorities al-

ready approved, such as a new $32.5 million animal shelter, the rollout of new election equipment, improvements to senior centers and senior services, and pay-for-performance employee compensation.

“Those investments in people and assets have allowed us to exceed our customer satisfaction targets of 80 percent again this year,” County Manager Dick Anderson said. “That’s four years in a row citizens have indicated a high level of satisfaction with our services.”

In 2019, the county exceeded its midyear revenue projections of $699 million by $24.7 million. With actual expenses passing expectations by $4.3 million, the county was left with an extra $20.4 million to consider for its 2020 budget.

The 2020 budget leaves a reserve balance equal to 16.7 percent of total

expenditures, but also allocates some of the additional money to strengthen IT infrastructure.

On Jan. 8, Commissioner Bob Ellis moved for approval of the county manager’s budget proposal, which was seconded by Commissioner Lee Morris.

“Looking at what you’d originally proposed, looking at the changes here and where we want to focus and what’s going on around us in the environment, it’s a pretty fair and smart allocation of funds,” Ellis said.

However, some commissioners were disappointed their requested items were not funded and wanted to see more funding for court services.

“We took all requests from commissioners and departments and vetted them,” Anderson said.

Some of the requested court improve-

ments were not included in his recommendation because of the large number of vacancies in those department. Right now, he said, there are about 50 vacancies across the district attorney, solicitor general and public defender’s offices and more than 250 throughout the whole justice system.

“We are recommending that we continue to work with the justice partners on reform and recommendations that are emerging before we add new resources,” Anderson said. “I think we have plenty of slack to pick up before additional resources are required.”

In a 4-3 vote the budget was held until the next meeting, with Ellis, Morris and Chair Robb Pitts casting the dissenting votes.

The commissioners’ next scheduled meeting was set for Jan. 22.

Treasurer Riley advocates for town center as business recruiting tool for Johns Creek

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — State Treasurer and Johns Creek resident Lynne Riley spoke in favor of a local town center achieved through public-private partnership at a Johns Creek Rotary meeting Jan. 15.

Riley serves as treasurer for Johns Creek Advantage, the economic development arm of the city, which is advocating for what Riley called “balanced growth.”

“It’s not just a new commercial building,” Riley said. “It’s not just a new residential community. It’s a balance of all those interests that make us a community of distinction.”

Riley said Johns Creek — in spite of its laudable public safety, schools and overall quality of life — is falling behind surrounding cities in a visible way. As cities like Peachtree Corners and Alpharetta develop town centers, they gain an advantage in recruiting businesses and investment.

“We need to develop that same concept here in Johns Creek,” Riley said.

“We need identity. We need a town center. We need a destination where we can tangibly show that investment.”

Riley said civic, cultural and business institutions need to work together to send a cohesive message about what makes Johns Creek an attractive place to live and work.

“We have nothing to offer that compares to what other cities are putting on the table,” Riley said. “We’ve seen time and time again that if the public sector is not willing to put an investment into the community, the private sector likely won’t step up either. There has to be that meeting of minds.”

Riley said the tax revenues in Johns Creek are as good as they are because of the quality of education, because of the quality of life.

“But if we don’t build on what we have today, that growth, that talent will

Riley noted a town center could help relieve Johns Creek’s traffic woes by creating a walkable district and could support local arts groups by merging with the Legacy Center project, which aims to create a multi-disciplinary arts center.

Johns Creek Rotary Secretary Ron Jones said the organization shared Riley’s support of the Legacy Center.

“This club has made a commitment to raise money for the Legacy Center,” Jones said. “We want to be out front of this very desperately needed investment in our community.”

Riley previously served on the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, as Johns Creek’s state representative and as state revenue commissioner. Several City Council members, school principals and business leaders turned out to hear her address.

“Lynne is such a treasured member of our club,” Rotary President Kelly Stephens said.

In May 2019, Gov. Brian Kemp made Riley the first woman to lead Georgia’s Treasury Department, where she oversees the state’s investments and ensures funds are distributed to the appropriate agencies.

Speaking on her role as treasurer, Riley promoted the state’s 529 Path 2 College and STABLE programs, tax exempt investment accounts. Path 2 College funds can be used to pay for college tuition and other education expenses, and STABLE supports people with disabilities.

Those who put funds in 529 or STABLE accounts, whether parents, grandparents or philanthropic individuals, qualify for some tax deductions.

“I know everyone in Rotary is very philanthropic,” Riley said. “You may e-gift online to any account holder, derive a tax benefit and invest in our children’s futures.

When we see the level of student debt in our society today, the trillions of dollars that our students have subjected themselves to repayment … I’d like to challenge us to be thinking about it in the front end.”

Women leaders share stories about finding calling

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — From elected officials to a teenage entrepreneur, fulfilling untapped potential was the theme at the Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce’s Jan. 14 Chicks in Charge.

The all-day event featured four women leaders sharing stories about the paths taken and obstacles overcome on their career journey. This was the third Chicks in Charge event hosted by the Johns Creek Chamber and Emory Johns Creek Hospital.

This year’s four guest speakers were Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann, canine search and rescue expert Vicki Bemont, teenage nonprofit founder Samruddhi Panse and Fulton Chief Magistrate Judge Cassandra Kirk.

Hausmann spoke about fighting to be taken seriously as the chairman of the Fulton County Republican Party in the early 2000s, to surprising herself by running for the county school board, to eventually serving on the inaugural Johns Creek City Council.

“I was happy to be the worker bee, the person in the background,” Hausmann said. “I had never, ever thought about running for office.”

However, once elected to the Board

of Education, Hausman found she was grateful for the opportunity.

“It was one of the most gratifying experiences,” she said. “I learned about all corners of Fulton County, about what makes us unique and the growth that was expected … When someone calls you with a problem with their child, and you’re able to help them, that is so satisfying.”

In 2010, she stepped down from the Johns Creek City Council to run for the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.

She said initially her role was to push back against the south Fulton commissioners.

“When I went down there, I decided I didn’t want to be a bomb thrower, but I did say ‘no’ a lot,” she said.

Since the district lines were redrawn creating three north Fulton seats, Hausmann said the board has vastly improved its financial management, department leadership and data collection and transparency. Hausmann ended with a call for more women to step up to leadership.

“I don’t want to be the only woman in the room,” she said. “We have to do a better job supporting each other, and nurturing each other, not nit picking each other or being jealous of each other.”

Next up, Vicki Bemont shared stories from her career in human remains detection, including a week searching in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a search for a missing member of the Saudi Royal Family and an appearance on NBC’s “Dateline.” Bemont said she has wanted to work with dogs her entire life, but it took years to find her calling in search and rescue.

“My passion for dogs began in the crib,” she said. “My first word was ‘puppy.’”

As a teenager she began breeding American Kennel Club show dogs, and she continues to work as a judge today.

She also trains dogs in Tennessee. In the mid-1990s, she became interested in canine search and rescue.

She spoke about the long certification process, the different types of search and rescue and how she landed on working with cadaver dogs. Bemont said she found meaning through bringing closure to families who lost loved ones.

“Searchers are androgynous,” Bemont said. “They don’t really care if you’re male or female. They care if you’re good, but I think that women bring a special compassion and sensitivity to the

Forsyth approves McGinnis Ferry widening agreement Alpharetta, Johns Creek set to partner on project

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County is moving forward with the latest plan to begin widening of McGinnis Ferry Road, a major east-west artery through north Metro Atlanta.

At a Jan. 14 work session, county commissioners voted to adopt a cost-sharing agreement with Alpharetta and Johns Creek to kick-start the project which is estimated at between $51 and $60 million.

Forsyth County Manager Eric Johnson said he’s hopeful the agreement will be signed by all three jurisdictions in the coming weeks.

Alpharetta city leaders approved an earlier version of the agreement in December, but it has since been amended to reflect further input from Johns Creek.

The project calls for adding a lane in each direction along a 4.7-mile stretch from Sargent Road in Johns Creek west to Union Hill Road in Alpharetta. Each city shares about 2.3 miles of the roadway with Forsyth County.

If all parties sign, Johns Creek and Alpharetta will pony up $5.9 million each, and Forsyth County will contribute $18 million.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is committing $10 million.

“I think that GDOT will continue to look at leveraging where they’re putting money into, either of those cities to create money,” Johnson said.

He added the Atlanta Regional Commission could be another ally, possibly securing federal dollars to help, Johnson said.

In any case, Forsyth County doesn’t seem willing to add to its share.

“It’s been a pretty clear message coming from us throughout this process that wherever the money comes from, it’s not coming from here,” County Commission Chairman Laura Semanson said. “We’ve already committed ($18 million). Now with all of the different players that have become involved, try to find a creative way to make this happen.”

Even so, District 2 Commissioner Dennis Brown, who represents the southern portion of the county lying north of McGinnis Ferry, said he thinks it’s a good idea to start.

“This is a golden opportunity,” he said.

The current agreement covers only the first phase of the shared project, focusing on two segments: one about a third of a mile from Union Hill Road east to and including the Big Creek Bridge in Alpharetta, and the other from Seven Oaks Parkway east to Sargent Road in Johns Creek, a distance of about three-quarters of a mile.

Widening of the stretch between Big Creek to Seven Oaks Parkway is not the focus of the current agreement.

However, if money is still available after costs for the first two segments are completed, widening work could continue beyond the initial focus, according to Alpharetta Public Works Director Pete Sewczwicz.

Dewey defeats bookstores in Fulton, Forsyth counties

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A move by Gwinnett County Public Libraries to rearrange its collections to a new system is creating a buzz in surrounding libraries.

Earlier this month Gwinnett County replaced the traditional Dewey Decimal System for cataloguing in favor of a “bookstore” arrangement that mimics retailers like Barnes & Noble and Amazon. The county says the change should make it easier to find and check out books.

Libraries in Gwinnett shut down for three days as employees made some of the changes.

“As far as the relabeling project, we didn’t do everything in those three days, but we did relabel all the adult nonfiction,” Charles Pace, Gwinnett County Public Library executive director, said. “We were highly organized and had excellent teamwork.”

The Dewey Decimal System has been in use at public libraries for close to 150 years. It uses three-digit Arabic numerals to denote main classes, with fractional decimals for each book.

Anna Lyle, Forsyth County Public Library director, said the county’s four library branches will continue using the Dewey Decimal System.

“We have no plans to switch,” she said.

The new system is not a new thing in the library world.

“It’s been talked about for many years,” she said.

Forsyth is not alone.

“We have been noticing a growing trend across the country to move from Dewey to a more bookstore-style

For now, Holloman said, the main focus is completion of the Library Renovation Project at Fulton County and re-opening 11 libraries in 2020.

“Dewey will continue to be our main way of displaying materials,” she said. “However, with our renovations come more opportunities for displaying materials in ways that are both interesting and engaging for our patrons.”

Dewey Decimal Classification, or as its more commonly called, Dewey Decimal System is a system for organizing the contents of a library based on subject.

The system is divided into 10 groups, each assigned 100 numbers—placed to the right of the decimal for more detail.

In contrast, BISAC (Book Industry Standards and Communications) is a bookstore subject classification system that is replacing Dewey, Pace said.

Publishers assign the BISAC codes as part of the process of marketing books and creating related metadata. A library can follow what the publisher assigns, or they could override them. Publishers sometimes assign more than one BISAC code so a librarian could also choose one over the others, moving the book to another location.

Gwinnett County Public Library joins Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Anythink, in Adams County, Colorado, as early adopters for Wise.

“GCPL is excited to play a part in the ongoing development of what promises to be a revolutionary new approach to library automation and engagement, one that focuses on the customer, not the collection,” Pace said.

Roswell makes strides in courting film industry Lifetime movie filmed at Roswell City Hall

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell’s new initiative to attract the film industry has borne fruit, most recently with the filming of a Lifetime original movie at City Hall. And the city is prepared to extend efforts further.

It’s all thanks to the Mayor’s Movie Task Force, which was created this summer to analyze the industry and market Roswell as a film-ready city.

Mayor Lori Henry praised the task force’s successes.

“We are lightyears ahead of where we were even a year ago,” she said.

The task force — made up of staff from the City of Roswell, Visit Roswell and Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce — identified five areas they want to tackle to make Roswell more film-friendly, including perception, resources, ease of process, opportunities and recruitment.

According to Visit Roswell Executive Director Andy Williams, Georgia is currently the number one filming location in the world. But when film scouts search for filming locations in the North Atlanta area, they are directed inside Atlanta.

The Mayor’s Movie Task Force is changing that, with a newly updated Film Roswell page on the Visit Roswell website.

The city has worked with ReelScout, used by the film industry to scout locations, to create a section on the site featuring only Roswell locations and businesses.

Williams said there are several benefits to bringing the film industry to Roswell.

Films, for example, provide jobs for local businesses, such as caterers, carpenters, electricians, hair stylists, makeup artists and plumbers.

Roswell felt those benefits in November with the Lifetime filming of “You Can’t Take My Daughter,” which generated about $78,500 for the city in four days.

And Roswell has a unique draw for the film industry: it’s vacant jail.

“The fact that we have a vacant jail right now is huge,” Williams said. “Not a lot of communities offer that. It’s one of the most highly sought-after pieces of inventory.”

Henry learned about the attractiveness of the jail firsthand at an Atlanta convention for the film industry.

“I said we’ve got an empty jail in Roswell, and you could have heard a pin drop,” Henry said. “Everybody, all of these scouts, came rushing at us.”

Since the inception of the Mayor’s Movie Task Force, it has received 34 film leads. Of those, it won five, lost 20, has four active and has five inactive.

By comparison, between January 2018-June 2019, Visit Roswell had about half that, at 16 leads.

Some of the latest leads, like Lifetime, are big studios such as Marvel, DC and Warner Bros, Williams said.

“We’re starting to land really qualified production companies,” he said.

Some of the common reasons for losing a lead range from the company deciding to build a set at a movie studio, the business or property owner declined interest, Roswell didn’t have the needed asset or inventory or physical space didn’t align with the need.

“What we need to prepare for is that we’re going to lose a lot,” Williams said.

Going forward, the task force already has several plans to increase its inventory and generate more leads.

It plans to soon establish quarterly community workshops to educate property and business owners about working with the film industry and how to post listings on ReelScout. It is also planning to create a sizzle reel advertising the city and its assets and to create incentives for filming in Roswell.

E-signed closings a sign of the times We are now 12 years removed from the recession that crashed a huge party in our country, spurring regulators and policy-makers to implement stiff new checks-andbalances. I was asked by a friend the other day: “are we better off now?”

If you read “The Big Short,” the one entity that really had the ability to stop the crisis was the ratings agencies who were rating very risky loans as if they were top-tier.

Whether it was because they were goaded to do so or because they were just sloppy, it could have prevented some of the country’s largest investment firms from investing in what they may have thought were solid investments — or at least hedged better against them, knowing the amount of risk that was really associated with them.

I cannot speak for those folks. Here on the ground, things have certainly tightened up. Our version of those ratings agencies, in some ways, are the appraisers and underwriters. The appraisal system is riddled with checks and balances right now. Almost every appraisal now goes through a national review and is graded based on data of recent sales and on recent appraisals in the area and on each house they are appraising for.

The criteria are pretty simple too.

An appraiser wants to value your house based typically on three houses that have sold in the same neigh-

borhood in the last six months with the same number of bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage. If they don’t have those, they can stretch it a little.

This has forced some of the larger appraisal management companies, out of fear for getting a low score on their record, to put out appraisals that might be lower than actual value. It has also done a decent job of keeping others in check from handing out unreasonable values. Here at Assurance, we have three solid appraisers on a rotation that nearly guarantees a reasonable appraisal on every deal.

Values on houses have gone up quickly here in Atlanta over the last 12 years. It wasn’t because people were willing to buy houses for way more than they were worth, and banks were willing to lend them the money to do it. It’s because of the solid market principals of supply and demand. Our city keeps growing and our homebuilders cannot keep up. So more people are fighting for fewer houses, which is driving up prices.

That isn’t going to change much anytime soon.

How we underwrite loans changed a whole lot after the crash too. And for several years you heard borrowers complaining about lenders “wanting everything including my DNA,” or “my first-born child.” It was kind of a wild time as banks and underwriters were trying to wrap their arms around the bevy of new regulations.

They were doing it with a fear that if they did it wrong, they would have their licenses to make loans pulled. So there was some redundancy for sure.

For example, to figure out a person’s income, lenders were required to get two years of tax returns, two years of W2s, paystubs showing year-to-date totals, and if that wasn’t enough, written confirmation from

someone in their company’s HR department. That’s a lot of redundant information just to find one salary.

Today, here at Assurance, because technology has progressed and because we are allowed to trust it more, some clients’ incomes are verified digitally during the application process. And some can actually get approved in seconds after submitting an application.

Another huge improvement here is that we just started allowing borrowers to e-sign most of their closing documents. So instead of having to hand-sign 40 minutes-worth of documents at the closing, it’s more like 10 minutes-worth. I had my first closing on a home purchase last week and we were done in 25 minutes — and it was only that long because the buyer and seller kept talking about the neighborhood. Once we were done, we all just sat there and kept talking, like we didn’t know what to do. It was fantastic.

So the lending industry, for some banks anyway, has become more streamlined and sensible. That’s great because it gives lenders a better opportunity to make the experience more about the home-buying or money-saving than about the process of approval.

It’s a time to spend a few minutes with a lot of people letting them know who you are, what you do, the type of customers you serve and the value you provide. It’s best to ask questions about their business before telling them about yours!

Chambers of commerce, Rotaries, business associations, industry groups and professional associations all offer a tremendous opportunity to develop new contacts. Pick your networking events wisely, because going to all of them is simply impossible.

If you’re not attending networking events, you’re missing a big opportunity to generate more business leads. Put a plan together and get out there. You’ll be happy you did!

Chattahoochee Nature Center shares future bridge plans

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Chattahoochee Nature Center is working to provide visitors with a new perspective of the river.

As part of an ongoing capital improvement campaign, the Chattahoochee Nature Center has created plans for a new bridge over Willeo Road from its campus to the Chattahoochee River.

Nature Center Executive Director Chris Nelson spoke about the bridge and other projects in the works at the Jan. 16 Roswell Rotary Club meeting at Roswell Area Park.

The bridge, which will be ADA compliant, would provide easier access for pedestrians to cross Willeo Road while enjoying the Nature Center or stroll along the boardwalk trail. Since the boardwalk trail was installed by the city, it has seen upwards of 15-16 ,000 visitors a month, Nelson said. The elevated bridge will help take pedestrians to new sights.

“You’re going to be able to walk on a beautiful, LED-lit walkway and look at the night sky,” Nelson said. “And you’ll be able to use it during the day for educational programs and events. And

when you really see the river otters out there that a lot of people that live in Roswell, even along the river, have never seen before.”

The bridge is part of Phase I of the capital improvement campaign. The total monetary goal of the campaign is $8.3 million. As of Jan. 16, the Chattahoochee Nature Center is more than halfway to its goal.

With a few thousand dollars more, the organization will be able to start on Phase I and the bridge, Nelson said.

Other campaign improvements include upgrades to the boardwalk owned

by the Chattahoochee Nature Center along the Chattahoochee River, upgrades to outdoor classrooms, and a new driveway and trail to provide easier and more visible access to the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Kingfisher Hall will also see major renovations.

Nelson also took time at the meeting to cover some recent changes to the Chattahoochee Nature Center.

The Screaming Eagles Aerial Adventure Zipline was added last year to draw more visitors in other age demographics.

The Nature Center mostly sees children, parents and grandparents, Nelson said, so they wanted to find programs and activities that appealed to students and young adults.

Other unique programs include pollinator gardens and two greenhouses.

About 95 percent of the greenhouse and garden produce is given to one of the Nature Center’s partner organizations, North Fulton Community Charities, to distribute fresh food to local families in need, Nelson said.

The Chattahoochee Nature Center also provides wellness visits for patients of local hospitals and disability centers to immerse them in nature. These programs provide several therapeutic benefits during the recovery process for many, including, for example, breast cancer survivors, Nelson said.

“It really helps people get back into their life and reconnect with their families, friends, businesses,” Nelson said. “That program was so successful… that it was picked up by the New York Times.”

Winter skin: Why even Santa flies south in the Winter

Winter in Georgia is a time when dropping outdoor temperatures cause us to turn up the heat and inadvertently turn down the humidity.

Dr. Taylor According to the EPA, humidity should be kept between 30% and 50% for general health and comfort. Unfortunately, for people with eczema, lower humidity levels may be insufficient to keep skin from becoming dry, itchy and cracked. Dermatologists often suggest that patients with eczema set an indoor humidity target of at least 45-55%.

Humidity can be simply measured with inexpensive gauges picked up at a hardware store or online, and humidifiers and vaporizers are great additions as long as they are frequently cleaned and mold is not allowed to grow within units.

More advanced central heating and air systems even have settings that can help help reach humidity and temperature targets, sometimes decreasing the need to purchase additional machines.

The most basic intervention for most patients’ dry skin is simply not to wash the areas that are dry and cracked with soap and water. Soap strips good oils from our skin, and hot water has the same effect. Our faces, chests and backs make a lot of oil and rarely develop eczema whereas the rest of the body makes less oil and is consequently susceptible to oil loss during bathing or washing. and are muddy, you don’t need to scrub your legs and hands with soap in the shower. Just let the soapy water from your shampoo run down your body, wash your groin and armpits and rinse off in warm but not hot water.

Then, pat dry. Don’t scrub dry. Immediately moisturize. Moisturize at least once more during the day and before bed. When washing dishes, use gloves.

After using the restroom, consider moisturizing antibacterial hand sanitizers instead of hot water and soap unless C diff or similar concerns necessitate soap and water.

Other creative interventions include getting a little bit of sunlight and decreasing allergen presence in your home and on the bed. Sunlight in excess causes skin cancer, but in moderation sunlight decreases inflammation in eczema-prone skin. Allergens like dust and dander can cause eczema flares for some people. An allergist can test for allergens and sensitivity to dust and dust mites, and for such people hypoallergenic bedding covers, frequent laundering and vacuuming can help decrease eczema.

For many patients, topical steroids, calcineurin inhibitors, antistaphylococcal regimens and other doctor-prescribed interventions may be necessary, and your friendly neighborhood dermatologist is happy to assist. In extreme cases, an extremely exciting new intervention (dupilumab) is advisable for the truly miserable eczema sufferer.

The average annual humidity at the North Pole is 65%, so as long as Santa doesn’t turn the heat on, the air at least starts out moist. Unfortunately, if one of those elves gets tired of working in the cold, heating the workshop will quickly cause the humidity inside to drop, so you can bet Santa has a humidifier or two hard at work during the coldest months, which incidentally (at the North Pole) is all of them except June and July.

Vision field loss will usually occur during the course of the disease. This is where patients experience a loss of peripheral vision.

Eye pain often occurs for those who have been diagnosed with acute angle-

closure glaucoma. The rapid onset of severe eye pain can also be associated with headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

Red eyes can affect patients with chronic angle-closure glaucoma, usually from a chronic use of eye drops to help alleviate vision blurring and other side effects that can be caused by glaucoma.

To combat glaucoma, make sure you or your older loved one has a comprehensive dilated eye exam. Your eye professional will place drops in your eyes to widen the pupil and look at the optic nerve for signs of glaucoma. Teams, swimmers earn Fulton County championships Johns Creek boys repeat as champs; Cambridge girls team earns top spot

Johns Creek captured the combined team championship at the Fulton County swim and dive championship Jan. 9. The Gladiators finished first in boys competition and second in girls.

NORTH FULTON, Ga. — North Fulton swim and dive programs competed for Fulton County championships Jan. 9 at West Gwinnett Park Aquatic Center with local squads sweeping the top spots.

Johns Creek won the overall title and boys championship, while Cambridge earned the county title in girls competition.

The meet was also the fastest on record with swimmers breaking 12 of the 24 meet records.

Johns Creek continued its overall dominance of the meet by capturing its fifth straight title in combined girls and boys scores. The Gladiators bested Alpharetta by 87 points for the overall title.

The combined championship was powered by several wins by the boys team, which led the field by 82 points with several individual county titles.

Johns Creek’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of David Hsi, Taylor Eaton,

Andrew Simmons and Jason Steel captured the top spot on the podium with a meet record 1:26.83, nearly two seconds ahead of Alpharetta in second. In the 400-yard relay, the team placed second.

Simmons earned another meet record by capturing the 100-yard backstroke title over three seconds ahead of Eaton in second. The junior was runnerup in the 200-yard freestyle race.

Steel placed as runner-up in two individual events, the 50-yard and 100yard freestyle. Eaton was second in the 200-yard individual medley, and Hsi, a senior, won the 100-yard fly county title.

Anthony Margarite, Jason Bao, Preston Browne and Christopher Bodea placed second in the 200-yard medley relay for the Gladiators.

Freshman Britton Spann finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle ahead of teammates Nathan Parez and Margarite. Spann was third in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Though the Johns Creek girls came up short of their 10th straight girls county championship, their strong showing allowed the Gladiators to take the championship in combined scores.

Farrington joined fellow seniors Amy Hitzel and Isabella Cicogna and junior McKenzie Rowan to capture second in the 200-yard medley relay.

The Gladiators’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Farrington, Rowan, Allison Swift and Evelyn Hedrick placed second.

Rowan was second in the 50-yard freestyle just ahead Hedrick. The pair placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100-yard event. Abby Etter led Johns Creek in the 1-meter dive with a thirdplace finish, Cassidy EiGomayel placed fourth in the 100-yard fly, and Swift was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Despite a strong performance, the Johns Creek girls came up short of the girls championship to Cambridge, who beat out the Gladiators by 37 points.

The Cambridge girls won two team titles and two individual championships at the meet to dethrone the nine-time defending girls county title winners.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Sophie Brison, Jayla Brown, Claire Kerber and Abigail Grottle broke the meet record by over two-tenths of a second to top the podium.

The same grouping set another meet record to win the 400-yard freestyle relay title, besting the field by over three seconds.

Grottle topped off her standout performance with another meet record in individual competition. The senior placed first in the 200-yard freestyle and earned a meet record time of 1:54.28.

Grottle added a fourth championship by taking the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle race. Grottle has won the Fulton

County championship in the two events for three straight years.

Brison, a freshman, captured the Fulton County title in the 100-yard backstroke ahead of teammate Eva Medici in third. Brison was runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley.

Brown placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with teammate Emma Guy in third.

Kerber was county runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle and Kate McKay placed fourth in the 1-meter dive.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Medici, Guy, Brooke McLain and Samantha Hamilton were third.

Alpharetta had strong showings from its boys and girls teams and finished second in combined scores.

The boys team captured individual and team county championships to power their second-place finish in boys scores.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Jerry Wu, Charles Lu, Nathan Jin and Phillip Kuznetsov beat the previous meet record by over half a second with a 3:10.65 to best the field.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Jack Casey, Wu, Xiao and Peter Meng also took home the championship.

Jin and Lu each captured individual titles with Jin pacing the field by two seconds in the 200-yard individual medley and Lu earning the 100-yard freestyle title.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lu, Jin, Xiao and Liam Clarke placed second.

Xiao was runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke, Jin was third in the 100yard backstroke and Casey placed third in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Alpharetta girls were led by several county titles, including three from freshman Lauren Hinton. Hinton swept the freestyle competition, standing atop the podium in the 50- and 100-yard events.

Clark and Audrie Uphues. The team broke a meet record set in 2013 by over two seconds to take the county title.

Clark added to her championships with the title in the 100-yard fly. She also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle.

Henry also captured an individual title for the Raiders in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Allie Traugott scored nearly 18 points over the second-place finisher in 1-meter dive to take the championship.

Henry, Clark, Hinton and Ava Paikeday were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Centennial placed fourth in combined scores, led by a third-place finish in boys competition.

Sebastian Sergile led the Knights with championships in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races.

Sergile, along with Aidan Saunders, Justin Bender and Bryan Teffeteller were third in the 200-yard medley relay.

Sergile, Bender, Teffeteller and Rehse Goodsite finished third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Camden Bowers was county runnerup in the 1-meter dive ahead of teammate Ben Engel in third.

Madeline Singletary led the Centennial girls team by placing second in the 500-yard freestyle and third in the 200yard event. Katherine Ward was third in

the 100-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley.

Chattahoochee placed sixth in combined scores with several top-5 placements.

Lilly Kasra, Danielle Urban, Katie Wong and Seema Chavis were third in the girls 200-yard medley relay and fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Kasra was county runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke and third in the 100-yard fly. Wong was third in the 200yard individual medley and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Charles Nelms had the best overall finish for the boys team, placing fifth in the 1-meter dive.

With a limited field of competitors, Northview bested Westlake for eighth in combined scores.

The girls were led by Emily Wei who captured a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Wei, Kate Wilson, Hannah Roberts and Lauren Lynch were 10th in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Northview boys had three finishes just outside the top-10. Chris Shin was 11th in the 100-yard freestyle and captured 11th with Jason Lee, Edward Cho and Andrew Gavin in the 200-yard medley relay. The Titans’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Alan Tao, Ricky Du, Andrew Romanchik and Siddhartha Yalavarthi placed 11th.

At 17-years old, Samruddhi Panse has already found a calling as the founder of a nonprofit. The Compass Movement works to raise teen mental health awareness and combat the stigma surrounding suicide and depression.

“So many people feel like they were isolated, like they’re the only people who were going through what they are dealing with,” she said. “Mental health is too big an issue for any person to deal with it on their own, so I that’s why I started Compass Movement.”

Panse and other high school students, with the guidance of licensed counselor Carmy Howard, run a blog where teens can share their stories and advice for people struggling with mental illness.

“We’re trying to stop the snowball before it gets too big,” Panse said.

Panse shared lessons she had learned from starting Compass Move-

ment and her missteps along the way.

“Every mistake you make is an opportunity to grow,” Panse said. “That was the hardest thing to learn, but it was also the most important. There are so many moments that if I had listened to what I was told and the people who tried to bring me down, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Wrapping up the seminar was Cassandra Kirk, Chief Magistrate Judge of Fulton County. Serving 200,000 people each year, Fulton County Magistrate Court is the busiest court in the Southeast, Kirk said. She spoke on her journey to her current post, including running for office last year.

“I think the reason that I’m here today is because what I saw as the worst year of my life, was actually the best year of my life,” Kirk said of the election Kirk spoke about challenges she has overcome as a woman in a male-dominated field and thanked the men who helped open the door for her.

“For me, part of God’s providence in putting mentors in my life is that I am getting support even when I don’t realize it,” she said.

The Scouts who passed their Board of Review on Dec. 30, 2019 at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church are: Xander Bouton, of Troop 347, was sponsored by Milton Ward of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He designed and constructed nine planter boxes and restored seven benches in the courtyard of Cambridge High School.

Daniel Beck, of Troop 7153, was sponsored by St. Brigid Catholic Church. He designed and constructed two outdoor wooden planter beds with cold frames on top for Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.

James Loveland, of Troop 7747, was sponsored by Fowler Park Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He restored a 140-foot trail at the Dunwoody Nature Center. This included lining the trail with logs, erosion control technology placed under the footbridge and installation of tree ID tags.

Letters alert man to fraudulent accounts JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A Johns Creek man met with police Jan. 7 after he learned of several accounts made fraudulently in his name.

That day, the man received a letter from Macy’s containing a credit card and bill. The purchases were made at the Macy’s store at Lenox Mall.

The man also received a $900 bill from Sprint for an account he had not opened.

He also received a third letter from Bloomingdales about a store credit account application that was denied.

The man froze his credit before contacting police.

Man robbed at gunpoint after providing riden ROSWELL, Ga. — Police are investigating a Jan. 8 incident in which two suspects, a man and a woman, robbed a man at gunpoint after he drove the woman to a hotel.

The victim said that around 5 p.m. that day, he visited the Chevron gas station at Holcomb Bridge Road when he was approached by the female suspect.

When she asked him for a ride, the man said he initially refused but relented when the female suspect said she was cold and shivering.

The man drove the woman to La Quinta on Old Holcomb Bridge Road.

At the hotel, the man was accosted by a male suspect, who pointed a gun and demanded the man’s wallet and truck keys.

After the man complied, the two suspects ran off.
