Flag football future East Forsyth girls flag football team part of a growing sport BY KATHERINE DAVIS newsroom@appenmedia.com GAINESVILLE, Ga. — East Forsyth High School’s girls flag football team picked up two wins in a round robin on Monday, Oct. 26, including an upset over North Hall High School, 14-6, before shutting out West Hall High School, 30-0. Now in its second season, East Forsyth’s program is the newest girls flag football team among Forsyth County’s public high schools. Girls flag football continues to grow rapidly across Georgia and the country, creating new opportunities for female high school athletes to compete. Flag football is one of the fastest-growing high school sports in America. Nationally, girls flag football participation increased from 15,716 athletes in the 2021-22 school year to 102,360 in 2025-26, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. In Georgia, participation more than doubled over the same period, growing from 3,866 to 8,320 athletes. The number of schools in Georgia offering the sport also rose from 176 to 301.

Sandy Springs police arrest 4 in human trafficking sting By JOSHUA WILSON and HANNAH YAHNE joshua@appenmedia.com hannah@appenmedia.com SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Sandy Springs police arrested four people during an Oct. 7-8 human trafficking operation at Morgan Falls Overlook Park and along Hammond Drive, the department announced Oct. 9. Police said the operation targeted people involved in sexual exploitation and related crimes. It ended with an adult trafficking victim rescued and three children placed in protective custody, according to a news release posted to the department’s social media. Eric Dejuan Lightfoot was charged with trafficking a person for sexual servitude. James Brandon Bell was charged with pimping. Na’kaya Delzora Jones was charged with prostitution, making false statements and three counts of seconddegree cruelty to children. Tamera La’Shay Brasby was charged with solicitation for an illicit sexual act. Records said Lightfoot, who has a

Memphis address, was booked into the Fulton County Jail on Rice Street Oct. 8. Bell, who has an Atlanta address, and Jones, who has an Austell address, were booked into the Rice Street jail Oct. 9. The county’s online inmate search tool did not show ages for any of those defendants. According to the county, Bell was released on a $2,500 surety bond Oct. 11. Jones was released Oct. 11 without posting a cash bond. Brasby, according to the police department, was taken to the Fulton County Jail’s North Annex in Alpharetta.
Jail records for her were not available as of Oct. 11. The department’s release did not say how the three children were connected to the case or which agency now has custody of them. “The charges resulting from this operation highlight the serious nature of human trafficking and crimes involving children,” the release said. The department said it “remains committed to thoroughly investigating these offenses, protecting vulnerable individuals, and ensuring those responsible are held accountable through the criminal justice system.” The department confirmed Oct. 10 the operation was the active investigation that Sandy Springs resident Marrón Bridges walked onto Oct. 7 at Morgan Falls Overlook Park. Bridges, who posted videos of the encounter to Instagram, says officers racially profiled her. She has filed a complaint with the department, which says it is reviewing the encounter. Police have not accused Bridges of any wrongdoing.
Police say profiling claim came amid trafficking operation By JOSHUA WILSON joshua@appenmedia.com SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Sandy Springs police say a resident who accused officers of racially profiling her Oct. 7 at Morgan Falls Overlook Park had walked onto the scene of a human trafficking operation that led to four arrests. Marrón Bridges, a Black woman, recorded videos at the park and posted them to her Instagram account. They show a white male police officer following her, asking her to identify

herself and then telling her to leave the park. Her account has more than 50,000 followers, and the videos have received hundreds of thousands of views. Bridges later said she filed a formal complaint with the department. In a video posted Oct. 9 to the department’s social media pages, Sgt. Giovanni Gomez, the department’s public information officer, said the department is aware of the incident and that officials are reviewing it. Gomez said Bridges had walked onto
the scene of an active investigation, but he did not specify that the encounter occurred during the trafficking investigation. On Oct. 10, police confirmed it was the Oct. 7-8 human trafficking operation in which officers arrested four people at Morgan Falls Overlook Park and along Hammond Drive. Police have not accused Bridges of any wrongdoing. Gomez referred people to the department’s social media channels for updates.

Candidates spar over AI in Forsyth County Commission race By DAN WHISENHUNT dan@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The two candidates vying for the District 3 seat on the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners are not holding back in the final days before the Nov. 3 election. Incumbent Todd Levent, a Republican seeking his fifth term, faces Democrat Shuchita Patel. Patel, who is South Asian, has already accused Levent of failing to denounce racist attacks against her. Levent, who is Jewish, has accused Patel’s attacks on him of being antisemitic because of her pro-Palestinian views. The latest dispute involves a website featuring images Patel says were manipulated by artificial intelligence. The website, shuchita-patels-record.com, has a disclosure at the bottom saying it was paid for by Levent’s campaign. The website shows an image of Patel in front of a video of downtown Cumming amid a fictional fiery riot. The image is captioned, “Shuchita Patel’s Record.” The bottom of the page says, “Remember Atlanta in 2020. Do not risk your family’s safety by electing Patel on Nov. 3.”

have a law against what his campaign did here, and the same tools work on anyone’s photo, including a kid’s. I’m a mom of three, and that scares me.” In text messages to Appen Media, Levent — at one point talking in the third person — did not deny creating the site or using AI and responded with images he claimed his opponent scrubbed from her Facebook page showing her support for Palestinians. “Patel has written her lies about
Levent,” he said. “Know that her very own social media post is coming out for all to see.” He later added, “We are hoping you are not going to attack a Jewish man on behalf of a pro-Palestinian antisemitic candidate.” He said the Forsyth Herald, which is owned by Appen Media, should not write an article about the campaign website. “Are you sure this is the position the Herald wants to take and be known for? Forsyth News is not touching this. Are you really going to?” he wrote, referring to the Forsyth County News, a separate news outlet owned by Metro Market Media. Levent also shared a video of himself attending a Bathukamma Celebration hosted by the Mana Association of Atlanta, a nonprofit organization representing the Telugu and Indian community in Atlanta. He said Patel was angry she was not invited to the event and it prompted her to contact the press. “They invited me, not Shuchita Patel,” he said. “That is what set her off to complain to you. She realized she didn't have the support of her own people.”

Alpharetta asks Fulton County to support North Point hockey project By JON WILCOX jon@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga — Fulton County’s participation in a North Point tax allocation district marks a critical step in attracting a national hockey team, Alpharetta city officials said. At an Oct. 21 Fulton Board of Commissioners meeting, the city was scheduled to present an agreement that could bring Fulton County on board to redevelop the area. Fulton County is forecast to contribute $192.42 million in additional county tax funds generated by the tax district, compared with $109.12 million from the city. The agreement is contingent on securing a hockey team. Without one, no county money can be used. In a unanimous vote at an Oct. 19 meeting, council members approved the agreement and sent it to county commissioners. City Manager Chris Lagerbloom said the county’s contribution and

North Point Mall owner New York Life has partnered with developer Jamestown to reinvent the aging mall site as a major sports entertainment center anchored by a 20,000-seat hockey arena. The proposal also includes amenities such as a 2,000-seat community hockey

rink, a 4,000-seat music hall, a 500-seat movie theater, a 45,000-square-foot conference center, a 400-room full-service hotel, a 300-room hybrid hotel, 750,000 square feet of office space and 1,385 for-rent multifamily homes. The North Point project is competing with The Gathering at South Forsyth, which also intends to land a national hockey team. In 2024, Forsyth County voters approved a referendum allowing the creation of their own tax allocation for the project. In 2025, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners, the County Development Authority and the Forsyth County Board of Education signed off on agreements that
call for servicing debt on a $225 million project bond tied to securing a team. The agreement between Alpharetta and Fulton County could fund improvements for the North Point project. Without it, the project’s scale would likely be insurmountable by private funding alone, city staff said. “A site that is entitled and financeable when the league is ready to act is better positioned to capture that opportunity,” the city said. Lagerbloom said city officials are now working to bring Fulton County Schools on board. School district taxes in the tax district could provide an additional $185.26 million. Council members said they believe it is in everyone’s best interest to invest in the area. The area surrounding the mall has seen significant declines in property value in recent years. Estimated 2024 city, county and school district property taxes on mall real estate and commercial personal property fell by nearly 53.5% compared with five years ago. “This isn’t just good for Alpharetta. It’s good for the county. It’s going to be good for the school district,” Mayor Jim Gilvin said after the vote. “Whether they participate is up to them.”

Greenway trailhead to close for boardwalk renovation By JON WILCOX jon@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Big Creek Greenway trailhead is closed to allow a boardwalk renovation. Forsyth County closed the Fowler Park Trailhead Oct. 26 as work began, the county said. The trailhead is expected to remain closed through the end of the year. Fowler Park is located at 4110 Carolene Way in southern Forsyth County. Crews will replace the existing boardwalk with PermaTrak, a system of precast concrete boards. The work is part of a larger effort to renovate and improve parts of the county's greenway. South of the Fowler Park Trailhead, a 1-mile section of the Big Creek Greenway between Ga. 9 mile markers 4.5 and 5.5 will also experience intermittent weekday closures. The closures will allow crews to access the construction area and transport materials and equipment. That section will reopen by the end of the day each Friday for weekend use, with closures resuming Monday mornings as needed. This schedule is expect-

Forsyth Schools class of 2026 scores district-high mean SAT score By JIM BASS jim@appenmedia..com

665 MARIETTA STREET ATLANTA, GA 30313
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County School District’s class of 2026 scored the district’s highest SAT total mean score in its history, earning a mean score of 1195 across all graduating participants. According to a Forsyth Schools news release, these students also outperformed overall averages in Georgia and nationally on both the SAT and ACT. The total mean score of 1195 by 2026 graduates on the SAT marks a 17-point increase over 2025. The score is 164 points higher than the state average of 1031 and 184 points higher than the national average of 1011. The College Board administers the SAT, which is scored from 400 to 1600 and split into two categories: evidence-based reading and writing (ERW) and math, each accounting for 50 percent of the test. Forsyth Schools students earned a mean score of 600 on the ERW portion, 75 points higher than the state average, and
a 595 score on the math portion, 89 points higher than the state average. On the ACT, FCS graduates who took the ACT also earned an average composite score of 24.9, compared to a state average of 20.9 and a national average of 19.2. The results match another district record set by Forsyth Schools. The class of 2026 saw a 97.47% graduation rate across the district, surpassing the previous record of 97% set in 2025. The statewide average is 88.5%. “This record belongs to our graduates, along with every family, teacher, counselor, and community partner who supported them,” Superintendent Dr. Mitch Young said in a news release about graduation rates. “Our goal is to prepare healthy, productive citizens equipped for whatever comes next. Graduating high school is the first step for our students, and I am proud that 97.47% of them are off and running. Until we reach 100%, though, we can say that there is still work to be done,” Young added.

Football: Continued from Page 1 The East Forsyth High Broncos entered the doubleheader ranked fourth among six teams in their division, while North Hall was ranked second and West Hall sixth. Against North Hall, the Broncos overcame an early deficit to secure the 14-6 win. North Hall scored first in the second quarter, but East Forsyth responded immediately with a touchdown by Bella McDowell and an extra point to take a 7-6 lead. Aubrey Dunn added a touchdown reception in the fourth quarter, followed
by another extra point to seal the win. East Forsyth carried momentum into its matchup with West Hall, winning 30-0. Bailey Groover scored twice, and McKenna Hall added a rushing touchdown. A pass to Sydney Honea just before halftime extended the Broncos’ lead to 24-0. Charlie Cummings added one more touchdown in the second half to complete the shutout. None of the touchdowns in the game was followed by a successful extra-point attempt. In the other round-robin matchup, North Hall defeated West Hall 26-0. The wins bring East Forsyth’s overall season record to 7-7 and its region record to 4-3.
East Forsyth junior Bella McDowell (10) moves to catch a pass during a game against West Hall at East Forsyth High School in Gainesville, Georgia, on Monday, Oct. 26.

East are personal, and they have nothing to do with zoning, water rates or our tree canopy.” Patel confirmed that she previously shared an image on her personal Facebook page of a raised fist with the words “from the river to the sea.” The Anti-Defamation League, a pro-Israel nonprofit advisory organization, calls it an antisemitic slogan. “It is fundamentally a call for a Palestinian state extending from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, territory that includes the State of Israel, which would mean the dismantling of the Jewish state,” the ADL said in a 2023 post on its website. Patel sees it differently.

East Forsyth junior Sydney Honea's (13) flags are pulled off during a game against West Hall at East Forsyth High School in Gainesville, Georgia, on Monday, Oct. 26. “To me, that phrase means freedom and equal rights and self-determination for every person who lives between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, regardless of nationality or faith,” she said. “After the harassment started in March, I made most of the posts on my personal page private. That’s what he’s calling ‘scrubbed.’ The posts are still there. Most of them just aren’t public anymore.” She added that Levent’s faith has nothing to do with her campaign. She said the Bathukamma event did not prompt her to contact the press with her concerns about the website. “I’m glad he was invited. Bathukamma is a beautiful festival from Telangana, and I celebrated it this year too with friends

from that community,” she said. “One of the great things about having such a large Indian community here is that there’s more than one celebration to go around. Indians in Forsyth come from all over the country, from different states with their own languages, food and festivals, and this time of year we celebrate in a lot of different ways.” She also took issue with Levent’s “her own people” comment. “He says I don’t have the support of ‘my own people.’ My people are the voters of District 3, and I’ve spent months out there meeting them,” Patel said. Emory University professor David Schweidel, whose research focuses on AI usage in advertising, said, “It’s getting harder and harder to tell what’s AI these days,” and that political ads incorporating it are becoming common. He predicted that the website would not convince any undecided voters in District 3. “I don't see you winning any new voters with that,” he said. “That's something that's designed to turn out your base.”

Each line in the puzzle below has three clues and three answers. The last letter in the first answer on each line is the first letter of the second answer, and so on. The connecting letter is outlined, giving you the correct number of letters for each answer (the answers in line 1 are 4, 4 and 6 letters). The clues are numbered 1 through 7, with each number containing 3 clues for the 3 answers on the line. But here’s the catch! The clues are not in order - so the first clue in Line 1 may (or may not) actually be for the second or third answer in that line. Got it? Good luck!

Continued innovation in digital media has changed the ways in which people buy, sell and interact with products and services. It has caused businesses to reassess the ways in which it communicates with potential customers and advertises its products. It has been well documented that these changes have had a destructive impact on local newspapers, which continues to be a primary source for local news, but is no longer a primary source for local advertising dollars – historically the lifeblood for reporters and their coverage. At Appen Media Group we want to address this conflict head on, and build new and innovative approaches to monetizing local news and creating a sustainable future for local journalism in metro Atlanta.
