Two face charges for reportedly forging checks FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man and woman for allegedly writing more than $25,000 in fraudulent checks.

Monique Lashone Crutcher, 44, of Marietta, was arrested Nov. 18 for reportedly forging three checks at three different businesses totaling more than $17,000, according to Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Crutcher was charged with thirddegree forgery, two counts of fraud — print, execute, negotiate fictitious checks, two counts of identity fraud and financial Georgia RICO Act violations.

She was being held on $85,005 bail.

Deputies arrested Broderick Elliott, 29, of Decatur, on Nov. 23. According to reports, Elliott is accused of forging three checks at three different businesses totaling more than $8,000, deputies allege.

Elliot was charged with two counts of third-degree forgery, fourth-degree forgery, two counts of fraud — print, execute, negotiate fictitious checks, theft by taking, two counts of identity fraud and Georgia RICO Act violations. Elliot remained held on no bond.

The reports were not clear if the two arrests were related.

reported suicide attempt on Willoughby Court on Nov. 16.

Deputies found a 36-year-old Alpharetta man who apparently jumped out of a second-story window lying on the ground, according to reports. As deputies were trying to assess the man’s injuries, he lunged at one of the officers, hitting him in the face.

Deputies detained the man until paramedics responded to transport him to a local hospital to be treated, reports indicated. Deputies obtained warrants to charge the man with simple battery against a law enforcement officer. The suspect turned himself in at the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 18. He was later released on $2,770 bail.

Sawnee Mountain Preserve plan draws mixed reviews Commissioners suggest site proposal be redrafted

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A plan outlining a new phase of upgrades at the Sawnee Mountain Preserve was not received with open arms by the Forsyth County Commission at its Nov. 24 work session. While commissioners did not completely dismiss the proposed master plan, there was a consensus to redraw certain elements of the blueprint.

The Phase 4 master plan dealt with two areas on opposite ends of the 821acre site. One included development of the former “Barker House” property, which formerly housed the county’s most unique home, a flying-saucershaped residence designed by architect Jim Barker, that was demolished in 2017. Now formally deemed the Barker Overlook, the site has an elevation of about 1,960 feet.

The other area outlined in the improvement plan was the Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitor Center property along Spot Road.

Some commissioners were most outspoken about the visitor center upgrades, specifically related to parking. The master plan calls for adding 34 parking spaces. That was not enough for some commissioners to warrant the county’s investment.

An issue raised by several commissioners regarding the master plan was limited parking expansion at the Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitor Center.

2017, according to County Attorney Ken Jarrard. Some of that land is shown as future parking in the plan with another portion slated to be an open field.

Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said she understood the county was purchasing the site to expand parking, and she would have never agreed to support the purchase if portions were going to be used as a field.

“I just think the greater need is for parking,” Mills said.

She added that with the plan calling for trees to be planted in the area, it would limit any future parking expansion without having to remove trees or purchase more land.

Commission Chairwoman Laura Semanson agreed, stating a rectangular field is not the best use of the property when more parking is needed.

Parks and Recreation Director Jim Pryor agreed that parking on the site, which also serves as a trailhead for the Big Creek Greenway, can be “crazy” at times. He said his department did want to have an open space on the property, and by adding more parking, stormwater issues would come into play. With the board’s comments, Pryor suggested a redrawing of the master plan.

“Now is the time to get it right,” Pryor said.

Commissioners did not take issue

with any of the other proposed site upgrades, which include a new pavilion, improvements to the grounds and a storage building.

For the Barker Overlook site, Commissioner Molly Cooper spoke out against the possible upgrades stating they would essentially ostracize those with disabilities.

To limit car access to the overlook, the master plan calls for a gate along Tower Road that would restrict passage to anyone who was not a homeowner beyond the gate, a homeowner’s guest or county staff. Visitors wanting to reach the overlook would be required to hike along a trail that is not proposed to be ADA compliant due to the extreme slopes of the area.

Cooper argued this would lock out those with disabilities, denying them from enjoying the overlook.

Allowing vehicle access to the overlook would go against survey results from those in the area, who shared they wanted to restrict vehicle access. Commissioner Mills said homeowners near the site were adamant in that point.

Cooper and Pryor said they were open to allowing bus access through the gate to reach the overlook, perhaps on certain dates or times.

Cooper said she does not believe the design “is a total failure by any means,” but she did want the matter further explored.

In addition to new access trails, the master plan for the Barker Overlook site calls for a pavilion, restroom building and plaza on the summit of the property.

County considers measure to eliminate late zoning additions

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County commissioners are considering a policy change that would prohibit developers from adding any last-minute conditions in rezoning or permit requests.

“That’s how mistakes are made, and that’s how things get through that shouldn’t,” County Commission Chairwoman Laura Semanson said at the board’s Nov. 24 work session.

The proposed regulation would require developers to submit any conditions at least 48 hours prior to a Board of Commissioners meeting in which the project is on the agenda for consideration.

The period will allow county staff, commissioners and interested residents time to process those add-ons, and could cut down on confusion over conditions during meetings, a situation

County Attorney Ken Jarrard said has happened “a couple times.”

At least two commissioners said they think some 11th-hour additions were put on development requests by design.

Semanson called it a way to perhaps “slip something in.”

The 48-hour period would not include any conditions already put on a proposed project by county staff or the planning commission. Board members could also change or add conditions during the meeting.

“What we are talking about is those conditions that the community may work on with the developer or the developer may be working on with [commissioners] that are sort of add-ons to what is already the established battery of conditions that have sort of been following the zoning down,” Jarrard said.

Under the new policy, if a developer attempts to add a condition less than 48 hours before a meeting, a commissioner

can postpone the item, have it presented without considering the late conditions or the board could still consider the lastminute additions, Jarrard said. However, the county attorney charged commissioners with enforcing the policy if they want to see it adopted.

“If we are going to do this, it is going to take some board discipline,” Jarrad said. “Because you all know, there’s going to be those situations where they come to you that day before that is outside of that 48 hours and they really want you to get this done. If you want this to be enforced and to try and really enforce this on the development community, the neighborhood community, the stakeholders that are trying to influence you on these zonings, we are going to need to be rigid in this.”

Commissioner Molly Cooper said procrastination by a developer does not constitute an emergency on her part. She said she intends to enforce the deadline.

Semanson also spoke in favor of the policy change.

“If you are not ready in advance to be able to share what you are presenting in a reasonable amount of time, which I think 48 hours is a very reasonable amount of time, you should expect to be postponed,” Semanson said.

Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said she still has concerns over commissioners and developers changing or adding conditions on the fly during meetings.

“If we keep allowing them to work out their conditions during our meeting, they’re going to keep doing that,” Mills said. “And they spring new conditions all the time that way. We’re just going to have to start postponing every time.”

Commissioners could approve the policy at their Dec. 3 meeting. Jarrard said the policy would then be enforceable beginning at the board’s subsequent meeting.

Brain behind ‘Bar Rescue’ dives into local market Taffer’s Tavern opens in downtown Alpharetta

Taffer’s Tavern opened Oct. 29 in the heart of downtown. The casual dining restaurant is the brainchild of awardwinning food and beverage expert Jon Taffer.

Known for resuscitating struggling pubs and speakeasies on his TV series “Bar Rescue,” Taffer has a no-nonsense approach that has brought nearly 200 watering holes back from the brink of extinction.

The show premiered on Spike TV in 2011 and now airs on the Paramount Network.

Taffer’s winning formula is rooted in painstaking attention to the smallest details, everything from how food and drinks are arranged on the menu to the height of the bar stools. The main ingredients of Taffer’s model are top-notch cleanliness and quality.

He plans to bring those nuanced insights, touch and flair to the marketplace with Taffer’s Tavern at 33 S. Main St. It is the first in what is poised to be a national rollout of the celebrity restaurant chain.

bar, and an array of large party booths bedeck the back of the house.

“We have seen this place being built out over the last five years or so,” said Hemant Suri, the franchisee who will manage the Alpharetta restaurant. “And this is the key central spot in the whole square area. And we just happen to be at the right place.”

For the past two years, Taffer has been working on the concept of a highly efficient eatery that uses technology to streamline the cooking process and ensure the highest sanitation levels. The company officially launched in 2019,

and Suri signed on to open the first franchise in September last year.

“Two years ago, there was no COVID,” Suri said. “Nobody saw this thing coming. But he (Taffer) was already working on a concept where the kitchen can be as safe as humanly possible.

Where you have the least amount of contamination that can happen, people are clean, the employees are clean, the sanitation standards are state of the art, using technology in a way that it has never been used before.”

The fully electric kitchens are tailored for sous vide a French cuisine term that translates to “under vacuum.” Sous vide is a low-temperature, hoodless/ventless cooking technique that’s been used for years at high-end restaurants. Instead of an open flame, the food is vacuum sealed in a plastic pouch and cooked in a water bath at precise temperatures.

Taffer has also incorporated a “safe dining system” to keep guests and staff safe. That includes touchless menus and sanitation coasters to let staff know a table has been cleaned. The taverns will also feature “pick-up cabinets,” in the back of the restaurant where customers can scan their QR codes to grab carryout orders without contact.

The technology extends to cleanliness in the kitchen. Workers must type in an employee code after washing their hands, and a system lets them know if their hands are clean.

Taffer has more than 40 years of consulting, having lent his expertise to thousands of hospitality properties and Fortune 500 companies. This is his first foray into owning a restaurant. But he’s jumping in headfirst.

Taffer’s Taverns will open in Boston, Washington, D.C., next year. The Nevadabased company has already contracted

with 10 other franchisees along the East Coast. Taffer has partnered with Fransmart to expand the restaurant to the 50 largest markets in North America.

Alan Walker, executive director of Taffer’s marketing team, said company officials are scouring Georgia for sites to open at least five more restaurants.

Three of them will likely land in Metro Atlanta.

“Everything kind of cumulated to him creating this first of its kind tavern,” Walker said. “He’s built restaurants from the ground up, but that was on a consulting side. This is the first one he’s done from the ground up and then slapped his name on it, kind of like a seal of approval.”

Phil Wills, the show’s master mixologist, crafted a lineup of signature cocktails. Meanwhile, draft beers are Taffer’s trademark “perfect pour” variety. The food menu features entrees like burgers, braised short ribs, fish & chips and glazed salmon.

The brand was originally slated to debut in March, but coronavirus hit, Suri explained.

Meanwhile, ribbon-cutting originally planned for Nov. 19 has been postponed.

Suri opened a neighborhood tavern in Atlanta’s Midtown in 2015, and in 2018 he became a franchisee for a casual Indian restaurant in Duluth named Curry of Now, which opened a second location in Atlanta in September. He’s partnered with a team of stakeholders in the Taffer’s franchise.

When Dad got sick, Ben found a form WILSON online for a third-party special needs trust so that Ashley’s part of her inheritance from Dad would be protected. After signing the form, no other work was done. After Dad died, they were disappointed to find out their plans to protect Ashley’s inheritance would not work because they did not name the trust as beneficiary of Dad’s accounts in place of Ashley’s name or change the will to put her share into her trust instead of giving it to her outright. Now Medicaid would be reimbursed from any money leftover at her death and there was no way around it.

Susan E. Huyer

Susan E. Huyer, of Suwanee Georgia, beloved lifelong partner, sister, and aunt passed away on November 20, 2020.

Born in Chicago, on April 4, 1947 to Florence and Bertram Huyer.

She was tested by cancer for 12 years, but she had a strong will to live. Her later years proved to be especially challenging, but her tenacity, sense of humor, love of life, and sports (golf in particular), along with friends and family carried her through to the end.

She will always be remembered for her kind and genuine nature; for saying what she meant and meaning what she said!

She is survived by her lifelong partner, Mary Anne Batchelor, brother Jim ( Jamilah), twin sister Patricia Burgy

(Bryan), brother Mike (Paula nee Geiger), and nieces and nephews: Kevin, Jeff (Patti), Sarah, Evan, Molly, Chloe and Nathan.

She will be missed by her two beloved pups, Bandit and Wrigley. “We woof you Mommy Sue”!

Thomas George “Tom” Hanlon

Thomas George “Tom” Hanlon died Saturday, November 14, 2020. He was 85.

His last days, like his life, were filled with family, love and laughter.

He was born November 29, 1934 in Chicago, IL to the late Eleanor and George Melbourne “Mel” Hanlon. Growing up in Hamilton, Ohio, Tom attended Miami University of Ohio, graduating with a BS in Business. While at Miami, Tom played on the Miami of Ohio football team as a Guard and was Consul (President) of the Alpha Chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

He served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, an experience that provided treasured friendships and colorful stories.

Like his collegiate and post-graduate experiences, Tom’s business career was marked by hard work and good fortune. He worked for Dow Chemical Company as part of the Consumer Products leadership team, beginning his career in St Louis, MO, then moving his family to Cincinnati, OH and finally to Roswell, GA. In addition, he served as a long-time volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital’s surgical center.

Tom married Sandra “Sandy” Locke in 1956, after growing up together since elementary school. They had two sons and a daughter, creating a family “rich in love.” He greatly loved his wife, Sandy, his children, his son-in-law and daughters-in-law, his five grandchildren- and how they loved him!

They cherished his humor and wisdom, and his unconditional love. He was an amazing role model as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

When the family settled in Roswell, GA they became active in the community and their beloved church, Roswell Presbyterian Church (RPC). As a man of deep faith, Tom devoted his time and leadership to serving as an Elder, leading RPC’s Thornwell Children’s Home campaign and participating in numerous mission trips. He also served in leadership with the Greater Atlanta Presbytery.

Tom is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sandy Hanlon ; his children Scott William Hanlon (Margaret), Cumming, GA; David Locke Hanlon (Lou), Marietta, GA; and Jennifer Hanlon Clifford ( Joe), Charlotte, NC. He was affectionately adored by his five grandchildren: Sarah Hanlon, Nashville, TN; John Clifford, Dallas, TX; Ashley and Ben Hanlon, Marietta, GA; and Kate Clifford, Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Fox, Upland, CA and Virginia Hanlon, Mason, OH. The family is profoundly grateful to the compassionate staff at Huntcliff Summit II. A worship service in celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Roswell Presbyterian Church. Rev. Jeff Meyers and Rev. Joe Clifford will be officiating. A visitation will be the afternoon prior, December 4, 4PM-6PM at Northside Chapel, www.northsidechapel.com.
