CUMMING, Ga. — A Gainesville man was arrested Oct. 11 for stabbing a man outside a Waffle House.

William Grady Hudson, 37, was charged with aggravated assault with a knife or cutting instrument in connection with the Oct. 9 incident.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the stabbing occurred at a Waffle House on Keith Bridge Road. Hudson’s wife called the victim to the restaurant and they met in

Draft redistricting plan draws students from seven schools Online comment open through late October

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY — A draft plan to populate two new Forsyth County schools is available for review this month to allow the public an opportunity to comment.

East Forsyth High School and Hendricks Middle School are on schedule to open in August 2021. The School Board is expected to approve a final redistricting plan in November.

During an Oct. 13 meeting of the School Board, district planners presented the draft redistricting plan, which was developed by staff using input from the community in the previous months.

Joey Pirkle, deputy superintendent of schools, said the two new schools will open with a combined enrollment of 2,800 students. This will require attendance line changes at seven existing middle and high schools. No changes will be made to current elementary attendance lines.

To fill Hendricks Middle, the plan calls for 423 students rezoned from Liberty Middle, 464 students from Vickery Middle and 288 from Otwell Middle. The first-year attendance at Hendricks is projected at 1,175 students, which is 80 percent of its capacity to allow for future growth.

Water/sewer letter could raise eyebrows, but county officials say not to be alarmed

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A letter included with Forsyth County water/ sewage bills that will begin to hit mailboxes soon will include a somewhat alarming sounding letter, but county officials say residents shouldn’t be worried about water quality.

Tim Perkins, director of the county’s Water and Sewer Department, said a county will send out a letter outlining a county infringement of Georgia Environmental Protection Division regulations, a “failure to monitor” violation.

The county is required to sample the system’s water 120 times per month for bacteria and report those results, Perkins said. In one month of the EPD’s most recent review of the Forsyth water department, only 119 samples were recorded, resulting in the monitoring violation.

The issue was an oversight, Perkins said, and all 119 samples were all negative and the county water was completely safe. To prevent another occurrence of under-reporting, Perkins said the county will increase its testing

to 125 samples per month which will be reviewed by three employees.

As the county sets out to quell any worries about its water quality that stems from the letter, it also wants to avoid having customers drawing conclusions the testing violation is connected to some residents complaining their had a foul taste and odor.

“There is no relationship between the two,” Perkins told Commissioners during their Oct. 13 work session. He said it was simply a case of “bad timing.”

In August, the county put out two notices related to residents reporting an odd smell or taste or cloudy appearance to their water.

The county said higher levels of Methylisoborneol and geosmin, which are produced by blue-green algae, were being shown in Lake Lanier and likely the culprit of the earthy, musty taste and smell of the water some residents were getting from the tap. The increase of the two substances was likely due to lake “turn over” related to seasonal changes.

The statement said the compounds are not harmful, but their taste and odor is not easily removed by traditional treatment techniques.

County commissioners discuss budget for upcoming year

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Commission has set Nov. 5 for adoption of the 2021 budget, a plan that calls for increased spending of a little more than 1 percent from the current year.

At the commission’s Oct. 13 work session, Chief Financial Officer David Greun said there remains uncertainty in the economy, but the county is proposing a balanced budget to carry out dayto-day operations.

The new budget calls for expenditures of $151.8 million in the general fund, and it includes adding 30 positions and adding five outdoor weather sirens.

While sales tax collections are expected to decline 5 percent due to the sluggish economy, Greun said he is “highly confident” with the current level of collections, the county should “be in good shape” next year.

Fueling that optimism is an expected

County cedes Athens Park land In other matters discussed at the work session, commissioners agreed for the county to give up its stake in Athens Park along Lake Lanier in the northeast portion of the county. Commissioners said the site is more of a liability than

an asset. The county had maintained a license for the undeveloped park stemming from a years-long legal battle between Forsyth County, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the YMCA over the development of Bethel Park.

In a settlement stemming from the litigation, the Corps of Engineers extended lease options to the county for several Corps properties in Forsyth County, provided the county develop master plans for the parks.

Athens Park was included in the county’s selections, but officials and staff have struck out on ways to develop the park, and it is not viable for use by the Forsyth Fire Department or Sheriff’s Office.

Commission Chairwoman Laura Semanson suggested there have been illegal activities at the park, and calls and complaints are fielded by the county, a point seconded by Parks and Recreation Director Jim Pryor.

County officials to vote on allowing alcohol delivery

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County officials are considering an update to the county’s alcohol ordinance that would allow delivery of wine, beer and spirits directly to homes. The Board of Commissioners discussed the possible allowance at its Oct. 13 work session.

A bill to allow home delivery of alcohol was introduced before the state Legislature in February, with a final version passing by significant margins in the House and Senate. Gov. Brian Kemp signed the measure into law in August.

The new law still allows local officials to decide whether to allow home delivery of alcohol within their jurisdiction, and

Forsyth County officials are set to take the matter to a vote in the weeks ahead.

The law permits retailers of wine, beer or spirits — including package stores, restaurants supermarkets and convenience stores — to make residential deliveries. However, the county’s breweries, brewpubs and distilleries are not be permitted to make residential deliveries.

Deliveries can be made to customers who are at least 21 years old who have an “account maintained by the packaged goods retailer” and who can present valid identification upon delivery. The person making the delivery must be 21 or older with a valid Georgia driver’s license who has undergone a background check, including driving records.

Forsyth is already planning to retool its alcohol ordinance, but that process will likely take a significant amount of time, likely not occurring until next year. He suggested commissioners forge ahead with a vote on delivery before the overhaul, adding he has heard support for the measure within the county.

Commissioners were in favor of bringing the issue to a public hearing, possibly in December. Commission Chairwoman Laura Semanson said she did want to have “conversations with law enforcement” during the process.

Many cities and counties across the state, including Forsyth County, have permitted the to-go sales of alcohol from restaurants within their COVID-19 emergency regulations. Though county officials are in the process of rolling back some of those allowances, commissioners appear to be on board with continuing to-go alcohol sales from eateries.

The state’s move to allow alcohol home delivery is the latest in a string of loosening restrictions on alcohol sales in Georgia and locally in recent years.

In 2018, Forsyth County residents voted by a near two-thirds margin to approve earlier sales of alcohol on Sundays, beginning at 11 a.m. instead of 12:30 p.m., in the so-called “Brunch Bill” referendum. Cumming residents were shut out of the vote in 2018 due to city officials missing the deadline for adding the resolution to that year’s General Election ballot. Cumming residents approved the referendum for earlier Sunday alcohol sales in 2019.

Social Services Committee to dissolve Forsyth County’s Social Services Committee, which has handled grant funding for local nonprofits benefitting the Forsyth County Juvenile Court for the last decade, will be dissolved following changes to the way the court is funded.

The committee, which includes county commissioners Cindy Jones Mills and Molly Cooper, Ruth Goode of United Way, Sarah Pedarre of Community Connection and Katie Newman, Forsyth County’s Mental Health Services coordinator, has essentially been deemed redundant.

County Attorney Ken Jarrard said the county has moved away from grantbased funding to a capped, invoicebased system managed by the county’s court, and upfront vetting of outside nonprofits by the Social Services Committee is now an unnecessary process.

Advocacy group reminds drivers to keep their focus on the road Alpharetta woman injured in 2008 crash leads campaign effort

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It is a message often heard and always understood — distracted driving endangers all on the road — but sometimes we need a reminder.

That is the message behind a new campaign from Molly Welch, an Alpharetta native and founder of distracted driving awareness group A Second Later.

The group is fundraising for bumper stickers and magnets reminding drivers to keep their eyes on the road, a simple message with serious implications Welch knows all too well.

In 2008, Welch was a junior at Auburn studying journalism. After visiting a friend over the weekend, she was driving back to her school when she suffered the consequences of distracted driving firsthand.

Welch took her eyes off the road to play back a recording she had made of an interview. In that momentary lapse, her car veered into oncoming traffic and was struck by a pickup truck.

The crash left Welch in a coma for weeks and with a traumatic brain injury.

The incident left her nearly unable to speak, and it was three years before she could walk again.

Welch’s story has a positive outcome, though, following speech and physical therapy. She completed her bachelor’s degree four years after the crash and now works as a motivational speaker and leads initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of driving while distracted.

It is her hope the bumper stickers and magnets will help keep drivers’ attention on the road ahead.

“I want to see them on the back of every car, bus or truck,” Welch said. “Like the name, ‘A Second Later,’ that’s all it takes. It’s not worth it. No conversation, no text message, it’s not worth the suffering and heartache.”

Marie Koch, owner of North Atlanta Kids Directory, became involved with Welch and the awareness campaign and emphasized the importance of the magnets as a reminder to stay focused while driving.

“It’s a nice reminder,” Koch said. “It can change your life, a stranger’s life and then you have the ripple effect to

families, just because someone was putting on mascara while driving. It’s not just texting, it’s eating, being distracted by music or anything else.”

Welch said she hopes the stickers and magnets will raise awareness and help her get the message to others.

Funds collected through A Second Later will be used to spread the word on billboards and in movie theaters. It will also help Welch to travel to other states to speak. Her message is geared to all ages. She has spoken before senior resource groups and to kids in fifth grade.

“Distracted driving can affect any age,” Welch said. “Kids definitely should make sure they are not a distraction, and make sure parents have a cell phone mount so they’re not holding the phone or distracted by it.”

Good news feels so good these days I received a gift this afternoon, right before it was time to leave the office for the day. It was just after 5 pm, and my phone rang and a voice on the other end told me that “my son is doing so well RAY APPEN now.”

Publisher Emeritus ray@appenmediagroup.com All of a sudden, I felt like I was floating above storm clouds after months and months of darkness and now, surprisingly, bright sunlight on a clear cool day.

Good news was something I seemed to have lost, and to find it again, with no advance warning, was unexpected and deeply welcomed.

At first, I didn’t process that sentence. It didn’t make any sense. No way. There was just no way he could be talking about his son — maybe someone else. I have seen this play out way too many times to believe in the words that came through phone into my ear.

I had not asked him about his son in months because I was afraid to. He is a good friend and we have known each other for close to 30 years. At first, we would talk about his son’s progress — the successes and the stumbles — and about this ominous monster that threatened to eat him alive. But after months and months, I began to hold back, worrying that my questions and my concern for his son were making the hurt and the pain worse for him. The amount of bad news always seemed to outweigh the good.

His son is an addict — as bad as any I have known. We have followed his sad story now for well more than a year. It is a story that I know all too well — rehab, recovery, release, relapse — rehab,

My friend’s children, my friend’s parents, my childhood friends, my old friends, my new friends, children of doctors, children of schoolteachers, rich ones, poor ones, young ones, old ones.

No pattern there. The drug has no favorite; it is an equal opportunity trap with no conscience, no compassion.

It’s not that I ever give up on people, but if there is one life issue that comes close in my mind to hopeless, it would be addiction. I hate it.

But to hear that his son now may have turned a corner, may have beaten his addiction, just felt like a gift to me because I knew how much of a miracle it must have felt like to my friend and his wife. And that may have been why I was so moved. After months and months of struggling with the growing impact of this pandemic — the chaos and the feeling of increasing hopelessness — I was able to rejoice for another’s success.

Instead of obsessing about my own happiness and my own welfare for just a moment, I bathed in the glory of another’s redemption instead, and my heart swelled. Momentarily, this odious thing we are all going through, disappeared and the weight lifted.

My wife, Christina, forwarded an email to me last night that Richard

Richard said that in today’s time of chaos, that “somehow, our occupation and vocation as believers in this sad time must be to first restore the Divine Center by holding it and fully occupying it ourselves.... What other power do we have now?... All else is tearing us apart.”

Richard said, “I recommend for your spiritual practice for the next four months that you impose a moratorium on exactly how much news you are subject to — hopefully not more than an hour a day of television, social media internet news, and/ or political discussions. The gift I received from my friend’s child’s recovery took me only halfway to where I need to take myself. I had nothing to do with his recovery or his redemption. The remaining half requires that I take action to help, to focus, to engage in the well-being of others around me and not drown in my own inward focus. I can do this. If I can, so can you.

Library system to host virtual Special Needs Resource Fair FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Public Library’s annual Special Needs Resource Fair will be hosted online this year Oct. 24.

The event will feature presentations and question-and-answer sessions with twelve local organizations that provide services and activities for children and adults with special needs.

“This event has become such an important resource for local parents and caregivers who want to find better ways to help their family members live more full and healthy lives, so we want to continue giving those families a simple way to find and connect with organizations that can help,” said Jennifer Forbes, an information specialist at the Hampton Park Library who organized the event.

The webinar will feature a morning session beginning at 2 a.m. followed by an afternoon session at 2 p.m.

The morning session includes presentations from Forsyth County Parks and Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Department, Girl Scouts, North Georgia Equine in Motion – Hippotherapy, Forsyth County Schools Special Education, Forsyth Autism and Special Needs Support Group, and Alexsander Academy.

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, Focus on Function Occupational Therapy, Boy Scouts, Parent Advocate Debbie Dobbs, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Sign, Baby, Sign will present in the afternoon session.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — THH, LLC, a technology-based holding company, has announced two new leadership hires, which will increase the company’s reach in the private equity arena and expand its footprint in the country.

The newly established CFO and CRO positions are tasked with growing the “carve-out” department, which focuses on providing financial, integration, software development, sales and marketing, FISHER and IT support to newly formed companies created through divestiture.

Kyle Fisher joins the company as chief financial officer. With more than 10 years of finance, accounting and audit experience, Fisher specialized in working with private equity clients the WELLS past two years.

Fisher will also head up a new THH location in Indianapolis, allowing the team to better serve clients in the Midwest.

Charles Wells has been named the new chief revenue officer. Wells brings 10 years of revenue generation and business consultation experience. For the past three years, he focused on driving new growth for carve-out companies.

Wells is based in the Atlanta headquarters and will service clients globally, focusing on revenue growth.

Since 2019, THH has been involved in more than 26 acquisitions, including carveouts. The increased focus on carve-outs leverages the firm’s strength in building smaller companies into profitable, yet highly efficient and scalable, organizations.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Parsons Meadow Professional Park, a 32,069 square foot medical office building in Johns Creek, recently sold for $5.9 million.

Cushman and Wakefield, a large real estate services firm, arranged for the sale on behalf of Rushmore Properties.

“This transaction is a great example of the resiliency of the medical office investment market,” said Travis Ives, U.S. Capital Markets Team member for Cushman and Wakefield. “We launched this deal at the onset of the pandemic, during a time when many transactions in other investment sectors were hitting pause.”

Located at 10700 Medlock Bridge Road, Parsons Meadow Professional Park is 96 percent leased to a variety of medical specialties such as primary care, dental, plastic surgery, dermatology, physical therapy, allergy and endocrinology. Cashman and Wakefield credited Emory of Johns Creek Hospital, part of the Emory Healthcare system and a top-tier provider in the Atlanta market, as another driving factor for the demand for medical space in the Johns Creek area. Parsons Meadow is located within a 10-minute drive to Emory of Johns Creek Hospital.

Healthcare work plays a large role in the economy of Johns Creek. The city reports there are more than 200 businesses in the city and more than 3,500 people from Johns Creek in the healthcare workforce.

Mullen added that Johns Creek is attractive to healthcare and med-tech industries for relocations or new offices due to the city’s educated workforce and the quality of life provided through housing options, safety, recreational amenities and the highly ranked school system.

This sale comes at a time when the city is in the beginning stages of

appointing committee members to the iHEART Johns Creek Advisory Committee to the City Council. Adopted in 2018, iHEART Johns Creek is a strategic focus on innovation and wellness.

Alyssa: Hey you two! So nice to see you guys again! I’ve previously had the pleasure of speaking with you both separately regarding Premier Dermatology and your particular contributions to the practice, but I wanted to take time to sit down with you both to hear your thoughts on your continued success.

Dr. Taylor, congratulations on another win for Best of North Fulton 2020! This marks your 3rd year being named both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist in North Fulton since opening in 2017. That’s quite an accomplishment.

To what do you attribute your continued success?

Dr. Taylor: Thank you Alyssa! Well, as I’ve said in the past, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to our patients’ healthcare. Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions. We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or compels us to do additional research, and Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating on our patients’ behalf. I believe that comes through. All of that, and my awesome dad jokes are a big hit. I’m a father of three boys ages seven, five and two, so I have plenty of time to practice my material.

Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, especially how nice the patients are to laugh at his jokes. Our team really is wonderful. We have experienced and caring team members. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic.

Alyssa: Kathryn and Dr. Taylor, how is

everything going in this odd Covid time?

I believe Kathryn joined the practice in March? I bet that was an interesting time to expand?

Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic provider and is knowledgeable and experienced in dermatology.

Most importantly, our skillsets really complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice has been on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling and pain, and Kathryn has years of experience performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is an expert Botox® and filler injector. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments. Covid was inconvenient but the slowdown also allowed us to make sure Kathryn’s integration to the practice was seamless.

Alyssa: Well I think that’s enough serious business for now. I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better.

If you won the lottery tomorrow what would be the first thing you did after you cashed it?

Brent: I would probably pay off the mortgages of my family and all my staff. And I would buy some new socks because mine are pretty sad right now.

And some chocolate chip cookies.

Kathryn: Flee the country and not tell my husband. No, seriously, after working so hard to put myself through college and my medical training, I would love to set up an educational fund for young adults from my hometown in Michigan so they could receive higher education and not have to take half of their adult life to pay it off.

If you could immediately become fluent in something, what would it be?

Brent: Italian. Feeling like a local in a foreign country has to be fun, and I think Italy tops my list.

Kathryn: Spanish. I was able to apply a lot of my “Splanglish” while living in South Florida, but Dr. Taylor puts me to shame when he is able to communicate fluently, and I only understand a portion of what he or my patients are saying.

What were you like in high school?

Brent: I was very smart. And very naive.

Kathryn: I moved halfway through my freshman year, so it took me a bit to find my place. I was outgoing and took part in Cross Country, Basketball, Track, several academic and service clubs, played piano and worked as a server at a restaurant. I also enjoyed a lot of time on the beach of Lake Superior (cold, but true) Who is someone you look up to?

Brent: My dad. Sounds cliché’ but it’s true. My dad is just such a wonderful man. He’s kind and patient and incredibly intelligent. He has worked extremely hard to accomplish everything he has in life and really instilled in me a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. I am beyond fortunate for my family.

Kathryn: My Grandmother. She grew up on a dairy farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and taught school in a one room schoolhouse until she went to nursing school in Ontario in her 20’s. She didn’t marry my Grandfather until her late 20’s, had her children in her 30’s and worked as a nurse in Detroit until her 70’s. She always had a positive outlook on life and a laugh that would turn into a “hissing fit” because of her asthma, which made all around her giggle.

What do you do in your free time?

Brent: I use those ten seconds to fantasize about having free time. I’m only

Every moment my wife and I have we try and do something for the kids. The park. Hiking, playing baseball in the backyard, reading together, teaching them to ride a bike, fishing, playing piano. I don’t have children that will just sit and watch a movie. I don’t know if it’s their age but they are just nonstop.

My wife refers to them as tiny tornados.

When I do have time again, I’d like to resume flying. I have my pilot’s license and love the beauty of the world seen from the air.

Kathryn: Traveling if I have that much time. Otherwise running, golf, hiking, kayaking and family and friend time.

Honestly, I love taking my dog for a walk on the greenway too!

What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Brent: Watching fish swim around a coral reef in a sea so warm that you forget you’re even in the water.

Kathryn: Oh, this is a fun question.

Something to challenge myself. Going to a new place. Seeing something out of the ordinary. The last perfect trip I had was in Costa Rica, where I kayaked at night in bioluminescence water, climbed a 200 foot tree, hiked through the rain forest and swam in the river (yes, I got ticks). I even tried surfing and ate a termite! Flights and weather were perfect.

Locals were amazing. Can’t wait for the next perfect vacation.

The draft plan estimates the middle schools impacted will all be near capacity even with the adjustments.

To populate the new East Forsyth High School, students will be rezoned primarily from North Forsyth and Forsyth Central to create a first-year enrollment of 1,603 students. That number is 75 percent of the school’s capacity because only students in grades 9-11 will attend East Forsyth in its first year.

To balance student populations across all seven district high schools, Pirkle noted adjustments will also be made at West Forsyth and Central high schools.

Pirkle said attention was given to ensure staffing levels, athletics classification and other variables as school enrollments were adjusted.

The draft plans are online at the district’s website, forsyth.k12.ga.us, and feedback can be provided online or at two planned community forums. The Forsyth School Board is expected to approve the final map on Nov. 17.

American Legion Post 307 hosts local chamber official FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — James McCoy, president and CEO of the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce spoke to American Legion Post 307 on Oct. 12. McCoy spoke at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge where post members currently meet.

McCoy explained the benefits of membership in the chamber and its efforts to build and broaden member business, activity and community involvement in Cumming and Forsyth County.

Also on display in the parking lot for the event was the post’s re-christened fundraiser, their 105 mm Howitzer, affectionately named Howie. The long-time local mascot had been in need of restoration before the cannon and its trailer’s painting was donated

by Sonja’s Loving Heart Foundation, the charitable hand of Bear Mountain Custom Painting. Howie was on display at Marketplace Walmart on Saturday.
