Fire Station 11, located at 4655 Pittman Road in west-central Forsyth County, began operations Sept. 28.

The 12,000-square-foot, four-stall station was funded by local impact fees and SPLOST 6 funds with a total cost of near $4.3 million. In 2018, the county received a federal grant to support the hiring of 12 new firefighters to man the station.

Deputies arrest suspect fleeing business break-in CUMMING, Ga. — Forsyth County sheriff’s deputies responded to a burglary in progress at an industrial office complex along Oak Industrial Lane on Sept. 27.

The property owner called the Sheriff’s Office and told dispatchers he could see the suspects breaking into his business. According to the Sheriff’s Office, a stolen white van pulled up to the office and three burglars forced their way into

Deputies apprehended a 26-year-old Stone Mountain man and charged him with second-degree burglary and theft by receiving a stolen vehicle. He remained held on $22,240 bond.

Two residents expecting a delivery told deputies the delivery driver contacted them when his truck broke down near the suspect’s home on Fleetwood Trail. The two told deputies they went to assist the delivery driver and the suspect tossed an open beer can at their vehicle, striking one of the victims.

According to reports, the alleged assailant then reached inside the victim’s vehicle and punched one of them, forcing them to drive away from the scene.

One of the victims walked back to the scene later to get the suspect’s address to report the incident to law enforcement. The suspect pointed a weapon at the victim, reports indicate.

The man was arrested and charged with terroristic threats and two misdemeanor counts of battery. He was released from jail on $22,570 bond.

Now playing: Local cinemas reopen doors, shift strategies

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA — Cinema lovers have had plenty miss the last six months, the thundering boom of the sound system, the flash of colors from the large screens, the smell of buttered popcorn and, maybe, the stickiness of a soda-splattered floor.

While the theater-going experience is still far from the status quo of the first months of 2020, several local cinemas have come back online with new protocols. At least one has altered its business model.

The latest move theater to reopen is CMX CineBistro in Forsyth County’s Halcyon, which first opened seven months before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Though the cinema’s parent company, Cinemax Holdings USA Inc., filed for bankruptcy in April and the Brookhaven location has shuttered its doors permanently, the Halcyon location has weathered the economic storm for now.

“Since the day the movie theaters began to close back in March, CMX Cinemas has been working on reopening plans, safety protocols and sanitation measures,” Matt Russell, CMX Cinema’s vice president of operations, said.

Russel said the company is also grateful to bring back “many” workers to its staff now that doors have reopened, and the company is confident that Halcyon will continue to be among the top-performing CMX locations in the country.

Ahead of CineBistro’s reopening, several other national theater chain locations in the north Metro resumed operations, but all are taking precautions against COVID-19 beyond those required by the state.

The AMC cinemas in Cumming and Alpahretta’s North Point Mall have reopened. All AMC locations are requir-

ing staff and patrons to wear masks at all times except when eating or drinking. According to the company’s website, masks will also be available to purchase for $1.

Regal Cinemas, with locations on Medlock Bridge in Johns Creek, at Avalon in Alpharetta and in Perimeter Pointe in Dunwoody, is also requiring all customers wear masks at all times except when eating or drinking. Soda refills will include a new cup, locations with bars open for walk-up service only, and service has been suspended for diners, restaurants and in-theatre ordering at locations which offer those amenities.

Roswell’s Movie Tavern is also requiring facemasks.

Aurora Cineplex on Commerce Parkway in Roswell has shifted strategies. The facility’s 10 digital projection screens have remained off since March, but the company has started to hold “pop-up” drive-in screenings.

Though theaters have resumed screenings, an almost full-stop on movie production has left cinemas with slim pickings to showcase.

In response, most have taken to showing classics or films that had previously had their theatrical runs.

With limited film production, many cinemas are playing classics. Regal Perimeter Pointe is showing the 1977 film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” 1983’s “The Big Chill,” the 30th anniversary edition of “Total Recall” and the Alfred Hitchcock classic “Psycho.” Several local cinemas are also screening the documentary film “RBG” covering Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s early legal battles for women, and “On the Basis of Sex,” a 2018 biopic on the former Supreme Court Justice.

Transportation summit highlights current projects, future improvements

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — State and local officials gathered at Lanier Technical College Sept. 30 for the county’s seventh annual transportation summit.

The summits are held to discuss how to keep Forsyth County on the move and what the future of traffic and mobility will look like.

The panel’s local representatives included District 4 County Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills, County Transportation Department Director Roy Ricker, County Director of Engineering John Cunard and Assistant County Manager Garrin Coleman. Regional transportation projects were also highlighted by GDOT Commissioner Russel McMurry, Chris Tomlinson, executive director of the Atlanta-Region Transit Link Authority (ATL) and GDOT District 1 Engineer Kelvin Mullins.

While all speakers were in person for the forum, it was broadcast online, with residents tuning in from outside the college. That was one reason to prompt GDOT Commissioner McMurry to outline how traffic has been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

McMurry said traffic during the initial stages of the pandemic cut road volume around the state by as much as 60 percent. However, more Georgians are now hitting the road, and he said traffic is around 85 to 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels. More large trucks are also on the road than before, signaling the “supply chain is reorienting itself” with higher online ordering of products, he said.

Keeping up with growth Farther down the road, the biggest transportation challenge Forsyth County faces, McMurry said, is “keeping up.”

It is going to take every mode of transportation to address the needs of Forsyth County.”

“We know that Atlanta metropolitan region’s population, including Forsyth County, is expected to grow by 2.9 million [by 2050],” he said, equating the growth to importing the Denver metropolitan area into Metro Atlanta. “Forsyth County’s share of that is about a quarter of a million people.”

In order to “keep up,” the county will need to focus on keeping its current roads in a state of good repair, expand heavily trafficked thoroughfares and ensure that there are enough funds in Forsyth’s transportation coffers to meet demand.

From a regional perspective, GDOT will “continue to build on the success” of the express toll lanes in Cherokee and Cobb counties with the Ga. 400 Expressway project, McMurry said.

GDOT figures show the lanes have cut the morning and afternoon rush hour by one hour each, and generalpurpose lanes are moving around 20 mph faster than before the toll lanes opened.

Though the Ga. 400 project has a limited scope in Forsyth, running from the border with Fulton County to just north of McFarland Parkway, it could be a boon for some of the 80,000 residents who travel out of the county for work each day. The major project includes express lanes from the North Springs MARTA station north into Forsyth with four interchanges, including at Union Hill Road, and bus rapid transit enhancements.

The project is expected to be completed in 2026.

Local master plan For travel within the county, Forsyth is crafting its first public transportation master plan. Eric Bosman with consultants Kimley-Horn outlined the goals of the blueprint and the current state of public transportation. Bosman said around 16 percent of residents are 65 years or older, do not have a vehicle or have disabilities that necessitate public transportation.

The greatest need for public transport centers around Cumming and along Forsyth’s border with Fulton County, he said.

Forsyth is already behind in offering residents public mobility. Dial-a-Ride, a ride-share program that provides transportation within the county for around $2 per trip, supplied around 23,000 trips last year, but Bosman said the demand required the county partner with Uber and Lyft to meet all requests.

Senior Services transportation is also available for residents and will be consolidated with Dial-a-Ride in the master plan.

Long-term relief could include high-capacity transit, like fixed route buses, that would coincide with Ga. 400 improvements, Bosman said. However, the county is currently focusing on providing more “micro-transit” and ride request services to address the gap in coverage.

Additional public input meetings will take place next spring for the transportation master plan.

ATL Executive Director Chris Tomlinson said to improve the state of movement in the county and surrounding region, a focus must be placed on providing several modes of transportation.

“It is going to take every mode of transportation to address the needs of Forsyth County,” he said.

County Engineer John Cunard underscored many of Forsyth’s recently completed road and sidewalk projects while previewing those slated for the near future.

The Pilgrim Mill Road expansion, which Cunard called a “tremendous project for the area,” is set for completion before the end of the year.

Clearing for the Ronald Reagan Boulevard extension recently began. The 3.6-mile, $60 million project will provide a parallel alternative to Ga. 400 and connect McFarland Parkway to Majors Road.

The county is currently acquiring right of way to expand Old Atlanta Road to four lanes with a raised median, curb and gutter, sidewalks and turn lanes.

The Coal Mountain Connector, a new, 1-mile road from Ga. 9 to Ga. 369, is also in the works, Cunard said.

Women stand on frontline of battle-weary workforce Workers pay dearly during time of crisis

By TIFFANY GRIFFITH newsroom@appenmediagroup.com NORTH ATLANTA, Ga. — The coronavirus has killed more than 7,000 Georgians. Many patients have taken their last breath at hospitals, without loved ones nearby. But when a healthcare professional was by their side, it’s likely that worker was a woman.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women hold 76 percent of all health care jobs. Females also hold 77 percent of social work positions, two-thirds of grocery store and fast-food jobs, and 52-percent of roles deemed essential.

The weight of the global pandemic is on their backs.

Among the women on the frontline is Darice Stein, a clinical development specialist with Northside Hospital Forsyth.

Stein said she has worn many hats since the coronavirus emerged and rapidly changed life in the intensive care unit.

Information flooded in and seemed to evolve by the minute.

“It was priority number one to ensure our staff caring for patients were safe, with proper personal protective equipment and education to arm them,” Stein said. “All the while caring for a new population of patients with a pandemic that had a disease course that is so unique and would change or decline so rapidly.”

As quickly as the virus moved, Stein

said the patient population rose just as fast.

“While other departments closed, we in the ICU and the general hospital were planning for the influx of more COVID-19 patients with preparations of increasing staffing, expanding into other floors, opening a secondary ICU to offer and staff more critical care beds,” Stein said. “Not only were our patients and families frightened, but you could also feel our staff’s anxiety.”

She said, despite their fears, the ICU staff at Northside Hospital Forsyth continued to push through, pull together, and give great care to their patients and each other.

“I am not sure I can articulate how proud I am of the ICU staff and Northside as an organization,” Stein said. “We have had our disappointments along the way, but we have also celebrated so many victories with patients since the pandemic became our new normal.”

Fatalities in the field Some in the medical field made the ultimate sacrifice while working during a pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 733 American healthcare workers have died from coronavirus as of Oct. 1. But a just released report by National Nurses United claims more than 1,700 healthcare workers have died from COVID-19. Amnesty International reports more than 7,000 have died globally.

Among those fallen professionals was

42-year-old Diedre Wilkes, a mammogram technician at Piedmont Newnan hospital.

Wilkes’ body was found at her home in March while her young child was nearby.

Emory Professor Ruomeng Cui said history is repeating itself.

“The last time we saw that was the Spanish Flu. The exact same phenomenon,” Cui said. “Nurses, they were women, who suffered more every time during crisis. More women were dying.

More women were on the frontline.”

By August, the White House declared educators among essential workers. Cui released a study the month before that detailed the damage COVID-19 had done to productivity among female academics.

“What we found, in just 10 weeks after the lockdown, although the total research productivity increased by about 35-percent, female academics’ productivity actually dropped by as much as 18-percent relative to that of male academics,” she said.

The study began in May, two months after lockdowns began. It looked at multiple

Trouble on the home front Cui was inspired to conduct this study after witnessing her homebound female colleagues distracted by household and family responsibilities during meetings, but not her male colleagues.

She said women falling behind in academia is dangerous.

“Female faculties might be innovative in certain areas or aspects,” Cui said. “If their potential, their talents are limited, that will definitely be harmful for the society in terms of pushing out innovative ideas and work.”

The disparities continue on the frontline when it comes to compensation, as well. That’s according to the National Women’s Law Center. Their research shows female grocery store workers earn an average of $3,000 less annually than their male counterparts. Female registered nurses earn an average of $65,000 annually, while their male counterparts earn $71,000. There are similar wage gaps for childcare workers, home health and personal care aides.

To take some of the burden off female frontline and essential workers, Cui said things need to change. She said domestic responsibilities must be divided, and employers should offer childcare support, parental leave, evaluation adjustments and better compensation.

Cui said a lot of work remains on the home front and in the workplace. But, she is seeing improvements.

“People care more and more,” she said. “More organizations and institutions are advocating for equity, diversity and inclusion. I think that’s really a good message. But it’s just so sad that we have to fight for things that are so obvious.”

Publisher Emeritus Another lesson I ray@appenmediagroup.com have learned over the years is that we’re all connected — usually far more than we realize.

In 1990, I moved my family from St. Louis to Alpharetta after we purchased a local, twice-per-month newspaper called The ReVue from Melonee Bates who had started the paper in 1983. I recall my first trip to Alpharetta to meet with Melonee and to “look over” the Alpharetta market. I liked what I saw — lots of car dealerships and a number of comfortable looking subdivisions.

“We can do this,” I thought. “Automotive” was one of the primary advertising categories in newspapers at that time, as was real estate.

We leased a house on a farm “way out” on Hopewell Road. A woman named Dot Benson owned the farm. The house ended up not working out for us, so we decided to look for something to buy.

The problem was that at that point we

had spent most of the money we had made from selling our house in Miami to purchase the paper and only had about $3,000 left in savings. We had two children under 2 years old and were living in a farm house that, well, let’s just say that farms attract critters and leave it at that. Staying there was not an option.

“No worries” we thought. We just need to find a house with an assumable loan where the owner will take $3,000 or less down and also pay the closing costs. (Were we really that naive?)

Fast forward and we spot a for sale by owner sign in front of a nice house on a cul du sac. I told Christina that I would keep the kids in the car and she could see if the owners would let her look at the house. They did, and she came out about 20 minutes later.

“I like it,” she said, and the owners said they would work with us — and that there was an assumable VA loan! “Then let’s buy it,” was my response.

A short time later we bought the house and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the house was when I saw the inside for the first time.

Fast forward about five years and we have survived a recession, are still in business, and happy — but tired — and now with three children. As the only salesperson at the paper, I was managing to sell a fair amount of auto and real

estate, especially with Northside Realty.

One morning, I happen to run into an agent for Northside somewhere in town — Brenda Shamel — and tell her that if she would spend just a little bit more money that surely it would boost her listings and she would sell more real estate.

Brenda was no slouch.

“I’ll tell you what Ray,” she said jokingly, “If you’ll buy this house I have just listed, I’ll buy a full page.”

Now, I’m no slouch either, so I followed Brenda to the house off of Milton Avenue. It was run down but had great bones. The house sat on a wooded acre, and in the back was this great big inground pool just off a deck. I grew up with a pool and loved to grow things.

“How much do they want for it Brenda?” I asked. She replied, $135,000.

I told her we’d take it.

Fast forward another 25 years. Christina and I are still publishing. Our children are adults, and our oldest, Hans, is now running our newspapers, with the help of his brother Carl. Hans now too has three children, 5 and younger.

This week Hans sold the house that he and his family have lived in almost 10 years and bought our house. We have moved to a lovely townhome just a couple blocks away.

Hans’ children will now grow up in the house that Hans grew up in. His son will be in the same bedroom that Hans

slept in. The house that Brenda Shamel sold us that Hans is going to live in was built in 1963 by Ralph Kirby who started the first theater in Alpharetta and the bank. Ralph’s son Bob, who became a local attorney, slept in the same bedroom that Hans slept in. Long before we bought our house from Brenda, we had retained Bob Kirby to be legal counsel for our newspapers, and he represented us until he died. We still get a fair amount of real estate advertising in our newspapers even 30 years after we bought The ReVue. I mentioned recently in one of my columns that if you listen hard enough and are patient, a path forward will almost always be found. Believe this: You must have faith. Nothing, I have come to believe, in life is random. There is a plan. We’re all linked together somewhere, some way. Know this.

Remember this now — especially now — because today we all collectively and individually desperately need a path forward out of this divide and out of this place we find ourselves that is so toxic and that has led us away from who we are and, OK, made us simply forget to “love thy neighbor as they self.”

We need to remember that there are some things in life more important than party, politics, or money — far more important.

We’ve got to get back to where we belong.

behalf. I believe that comes through. All of that, and my awesome dad jokes are a big hit. I’m a father of three boys ages seven, five and two, so I have plenty of time to practice my material.

Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, especially how nice the patients are to laugh at his jokes. Our team really is wonderful. We have experienced and caring team members. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic.

Alyssa: Kathryn and Dr. Taylor, how is everything going in this odd Covid time?

I believe Kathryn joined the practice in March? I bet that was an interesting time to expand?

Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic provider and is knowledgeable and experienced in dermatology.

Most importantly, our skillsets really complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice has been on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling and pain, and Kathryn has years of experi-

ence performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is an expert Botox® and filler injector. Alyssa: Well I think that’s enough serious business for now. I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better.

If you won the lottery tomorrow what would be the first thing you did after you cashed it?

Brent: I would probably pay off the mortgages of my family and all my staff. And I would buy some new socks because mine are pretty sad right now.

Premier: Continued from Page 8 hard to put myself through college and my medical training, I would love to set up an educational fund for young adults from my hometown in Michigan so they could receive higher education and not have to take half of their adult life to pay it off.

If you could immediately become fluent in something, what would it be?

Brent: Italian. Feeling like a local in a foreign country has to be fun, and I think Italy tops my list.

Kathryn: Spanish. I was able to apply a lot of my “Splanglish” while living in South Florida, but Dr. Taylor puts me to shame when he is able to communicate fluently, and I only understand a portion of what he or my patients are saying.

What were you like in high school?

Brent: I was very smart. And very naive.

I had very little time for much besides keeping my nose to the grindstone but was still happy and people still joke that in the back of my head I seem to have The Girl From Ipanema playing on repeat.

Kathryn: I moved halfway through my freshman year, so it took me a bit to find my place. I was outgoing and took part in Cross Country, Basketball, Track, several academic and service clubs, played piano and worked as a server at a restaurant. I also enjoyed a lot of time on the beach of Lake Superior (cold, but true) Who is someone you look up to?

Brent: My dad. Sounds cliché’ but it’s true. My dad is just such a wonderful man. He’s kind and patient and incredibly intelligent. He has worked extremely hard to accomplish everything he has in life and really instilled in me a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. I am beyond fortunate for my family.

Kathryn: My Grandmother. She grew up on a dairy farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and taught school in a one room schoolhouse until she went to nursing school in Ontario in her 20’s. She didn’t marry my Grandfather until her late 20’s, had her children in her 30’s and worked as a nurse in Detroit until her 70’s. She always had a positive outlook on life and a laugh that would turn into a “hissing fit” because of her asthma, which made all around her giggle.

What do you do in your free time?

Brent: I use those ten seconds to fantasize about having free time. I’m only half-joking. Hobbies are a bit on pause with three boys seven and younger.

Every moment my wife and I have we try and do something for the kids. The park.

Hiking, playing baseball in the backyard, reading together, teaching them to ride a bike, fishing, playing piano. I don’t have

HEALTH & WELLNESS • Sponsored Section children that will just sit and watch a movie. I don’t know if it’s their age but they are just nonstop. My wife refers to them as tiny tornados. When I do have time again, I’d like to resume flying.

I have my pilot’s license and love the beauty of the world seen from the air.

Kathryn: Traveling if I have that much time. Otherwise running, golf, hiking, kayaking and family and friend time.

Honestly, I love taking my dog for a walk on the greenway too!

If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Brent: Is this my opportunity to plug Outback Steakhouse and hope they mail me an honorary-Aussie free-food-for-life card?

Kathryn: Soup. My Dad was our primary cook growing up and never wastes food.

You can make soup out of anything.

What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Brent: Watching fish swim around a coral reef in a sea so warm that you forget you’re even in the water.

Kathryn: Oh, this is a fun question.

Something to challenge myself. Going to a new place. Seeing something out of the ordinary. The last perfect trip I had was in Costa Rica, where I kayaked at night in bioluminescence water, climbed a 200 foot tree, hiked through the rain forest and swam in the river (yes, I got ticks). I even tried surfing and ate a termite! Flights and weather were perfect.

Locals were amazing. Can’t wait for the next perfect vacation.

What is something embarrassing about yourself?

Brent: Um, I never remember birthdays or anniversaries etc. Not because I don’t remember what day they are but because I don’t ever know what date it currently is. Oh, and I once was backstage a Miley Cyrus concert. It was a friend’s fault I promise!

Kathryn: I used to be amazing at remember peoples’ faces and names. Now I’ve turned into what I used to make fun of my mother for. Sigh.

What is a long-term goal?

Brent: More than anything I want my kids to grow up to reach their potential and be happy.

Kathryn: Ditto to that. Happiness and health for my children and never stop learning.

St. James anniversary brings remembrance, hope for future

By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The sanctuary walls of St. James United Methodist Church have stood the test of time for 153 years.

This predominantly African American church has survived Jim Crow, world wars, civil rights unrest, economic crisis and now a second pandemic.

The church was incepted Feb. 4, 1867 in a small single-roomed building on one-fourth acre on Cumming Street. The church spent $25 on the property, a month’s savings at the time.

As recently as 1999, the church faced dissolution because of diminished attendance. The Rev. Marvin Moss was tasked with closing the church.

Instead, he went to grocery stores, retail shops and high school sporting events striking conversations and inviting African Americans to attend service.

His energy and clever sermon titles are credited with growing church membership to 1,800.

In 2004, the church moved to its current location on Webb Bridge Road.

In September, St. James held an anWILLIAMS niversary service showcasing powerful vocals, congratulatory messages from parishioners and clergy, and a sermon from the Rev. Dr. Gregory Williams about rejecting fear and replacing it with love and sound mind.

Williams recently succeeded Senior Pastor the Rev. Dr. Michael McQueen, who has taken a regional leadership position with the North Georgia Conference. During McQueen’s 14-year tenure, the church increased its presence in Alpharetta, growing its congregation and strengthening its voice in the community.

“I can’t say enough how grateful I am for our relationship with St. James UMC,” said John Robison, director of Alpharetta Public Safety. “Their congregation and staff are truly a blessing to our community, and on a personal note, I am especially grateful for the support of Dr. McQueen.”

St. James was helpful in creating an opportunity to discuss in an open forum any concerns related to racial tensions, Robison said. Community involvement is a high priority for the church. The May killing of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis brought racial injustice to the forefront of the American conscience. Raw emotions erupted into nationwide demonstrations and strikes calling for societal transformation that included changing police tactics.

A young adult member used St. James’ parking lot in July hoping to gather 40 people in solidarity with

other youth marching to Alpharetta City Hall. The crowd grew to about 200 and represented an intersection of society.

Associate Pastor the Rev. Tavares Stephens recalled it as an urgent response of togetherness.

“It created incredible synergy where we had the mayor, Pastor McQueen at the time, different sororities, fraternities, other concerned citizens, members of the church, and it was a multi-ethnic gathering of people,” he said.

Stephens, a former educator, is leading a program called “The Race Forward,” tasked with holding difficult conversations about race. A men’s Bible study group called “Bridging the Gap” spun off from this program.

The study includes Alpharetta First and Mt. Pisgah United Methodist churches.

Stephens said he believes listening to other’s stories without judgement is needed.

“If we would give each other that kind of benefit of the doubt, both ways, it would create a better ability for us to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” he said.

The Rev. Williams says he is pleased to celebrate this year’s anniversary.

“Today we are excited because we are standing on the shoulders of giants, if it was not for [our ancestors], we would not be here today,” he said.

Williams says the church will continue to tackle difficult issues and conversations.

“I think part of the issue right now in our world is that we are not talking to each other,” Williams said. “If we can begin to talk with one another rather than just assuming because a person might be white or whatever [race] that they think a certain way. That’s not always the case.”

For Williams, change starts in the home. “If every house, one house at a time, works to bring about change, we can change the world,” he said.

Ga. 400 continues to draw interest from tech firms

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — Financial services company Deluxe Corporation is boosting the resume of the Ga. 400 corridor, adding another technology operation to list of close to 1,000 others that line the stretch.

Deluxe, which has in the past specialized in tech printing services, looks to bring in some 700 high tech jobs to a new innovation and technology center in Sandy Springs.

The city agreed to waive as much as $255,000 in permit and business license fees depending on the length of the company’s office lease.

Deluxe President and CEO Barry C. McCarthy said the Perimeter area, especially along Ga. 400, distinguished itself among close to a dozen finalists for locating the office.

“We did a pretty exhaustive national search about where we would want to place our innovation and technology centers, and Georgia came high on the list,” McCarthy said. “It’s already one of

the major fintech capitals of the world.

The engagement of the technology community is pretty profound.”

He said the state has distinguished itself for its commitment to building a tech workforce, important to a company like Deluxe that is transforming from business services to becoming a trusted business technology company. “[It’s] for those reasons, plus the others, close by the airport, great quality of life overall, temperate climate, affordability and all the lifestyle things that the state talks about, from the North Georgia mountains to the golden isles on the Atlantic coast,” McCarthy said.

The corridor’s reputation for attracting Fortune 1,000 companies, like Mercedes Benz, State Farm and Continental Hotel Group, also was a factor.

“We knew that meant that in the area, there would be great amenities, and obviously, if you travel the area, you can see the incredible amenities with the Perimeter Mall and all the other things that are there, plus the availability of MARTA and public transit made the area really appealing,” McCarthy said.

Another key factor in the site location, McCarthy said, is the building itself, which sits just off Ga. 400 at the Glenridge exit.

“Access is phenomenal — easy, easy, easy for our employee population,” McCarthy said.

Recruiting has already begun, but over the next few years, he said the company will continue to build its workforce to full capacity, focusing on product management, product development, application development, technology of all types, artificial intelligence, team learning, data analytics, cloud-based services and web design.

The company is targeting candidates from across the metro area, but especially those concentrated near the Ga. 400 and I-285 corridors, he said.

The city’s financial incentives were also important, not necessarily for the tax and fee saving, but for the message it sent, he said.

“It’s always helpful to see that in a community, even if the incentives aren’t massive,” McCarthy said. “It’s a huge measure about a community’s interest

in having a company like ours… Beyond the incentives, the incredible warm welcome and support the city government has given us in the decision process also gave us [is] hugely important to us as a company trying to expand in the geography.”

McCarthy said he hopes to return the favor by providing value to the community.

New protocols to alter look of high school basketball this season

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — The sports landscape has been altered by the coronavirus pandemic, and those impacts will extend to high school basketball in Georgia this year.

The Georgia High School Association announced last week it is rolling out a string of safety protocols for the 2020-21 season.

The rule changes and suggestions are being implemented to “decrease potential exposure to respiratory droplets by encouraging social distancing, limiting participation in administrative tasks to essential personnel and allowing for appropriate protective equipment.”

Perhaps the most noteworthy change is the elimination of a jump ball to tip off each contest. Instead, the visiting team will be awarded possession of the ball to open the game. In overtime, a coin toss will determine which team will be on offense to begin the period.

Another element affected by the new rules will be throw-ins. Also included in the updates is a change that allows both officials and players to wear cloth facemasks. The GHSA’s outline also directs schools to “consider requiring coaching staff and other bench personnel to wear face coverings while on the bench.”

Though not required, schools are encouraged to add additional rows or chairs between the end line and coach’s box to allow for social distancing in the bench area. This is similar to other suggestions given by the GHSA for expand-

ing benches/player areas in football, volleyball and softball.

Another suggestion from the GHSA is to add another row of chairs for the bench and to place benches opposite spectator seating if possible.

Pre-game conferences will be limited to referees and the head coach from each team, and post-game handshakes are prohibited and to be replaced by each team lining up on their respective free throw line to wave to the opposing team in a show of sportsmanship.
