NSW NORTHSIDE WOMAN

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Three horses were left roaming their yard off Bethelview Road Sept. 9 after an unidentified person burglarized the property.

Deputies arrived at 6:30 a.m. to find the back door, back window and basement doors open and an audible alarm sounding from inside the house.

Three horses were also in the yard after they’d been let out through a gate in

a fenced area behind the house.

No suspect was found on the property, but deputies said there was evidence someone had been inside the house because property was thrown about in the bedrooms. Guns, tools and other valuable items were in plain view, but were not taken.

One of the homeowners arrived and said he and his brother inherited the property, but his brother resides there

Man jailed for burglary at Hyundai dealership

Window repairman sought in connection with burglary FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Police are looking for a repair man who allegedly stole $17,200 worth of jewelry from a woman while repairing her windows.

The 78-year-old woman said on Feb. 21 she had exterminators to her house on Coventry Court. They recommended two windows in the master bedroom be replaced and sent a handyman to do the job. She said an older man named Greg did the work.

Due to a foot surgery, the woman said she had not been to the upstairs bedroom in some time. She went to check her jewelry and found multiple items missing. The only other person who would have been in the room was the repair man, she said.

A 14K gold class ring with a diamond stone worth $10,000, a 14K gold bracelet worth $2,200 and a custom charm bracelet converted into a necklace worth $5,000 were all reported missing.

The exterminator confirmed he does have a worker named Greg who did work for the woman. He said he would contact deputies to see who the helpers were that day.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A 22-yearold Florida man was arrested Sept. 9 after firefighters reported they found him attempting to steal cars from the Hyundai dealership off Peachtree Parkway.

The fire department had arrived at the dealership for an alarm when they saw an open door and a man attempting to get into a new car.

The man said he was looking for his car he thought he had parked there. He had keys in his had that still had the dealer tag.

Deputies found a ransacked office, two new cars that appeared to have been hit by another car and third car with damage.

Deputies arrested him for second degree burglary and criminal damage to property.

Passengers jump from truck that catches fire FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A 2005 Chevy Silverado truck pulling a trailer caught fire Sept. 14 on Ga. 400 just north of McFarland Parkway.

Explosions from the fire spurred authorities to close all lanes of Ga. 400 north and southbound.

The occupants said they were driving northbound when they noticed the vehicle was shooting flames between

Driver cited for violation after truck hits gas line FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies arrested a man Sept. 16 after the Enterprise rental truck he was driving ran off the road, hit a gas line causing a leak which shut down the roadway.

Deputies arrived to the scene of Johns Creek Parkway and Research Court and heard loud hissing sounds. A yellow pipe in the ground was emitting a strong odor of gas.

The fire department arrived at the scene and detected a major gas leak, leading authorities to close a section of Johns Creek Parkway.

The truck was located down the street with yellow paint on the front that matched the gas pipes that were struck, along with a dent in the bumper and bark from a tree. The 33-year-old driver was arrested for failure to report an accident and failure to maintain lane.

County attorney warns against synthetic drugs

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — This summer, County Attorney Ken Jarrard went into a gas station with his son to get an oil change. The transaction was standard, except for the brightly colored packages behind the glass counter that intrigued his son and terrified Jarrard.

The items were filled with Kratom, an herbal product often used for muscle pain relief and treatment for opiate addiction and withdrawal. It worried Jarrard because the drug has been flagged by the FDA for its possible toxicity and its potential for harm.

“I have to do constant training with my teenagers to tell them these substances are out there with the emphasis on some sort of mind-altering drug,” he said. “These substances are out there.

It’s literally Russian roulette with what’s in it. If you say they’re killing our kids, they’ll tell you the label says ‘not for human consumption.’ We understand that’s a lie, but it makes it difficult from a regulatory perspective.”

He spoke about his family and personal concerns in September to the Forsyth County Drug Awareness Council and discussed how the county is working to fight these loopholes.

“We can all agree if this is bad in Forsyth County, it’s bad for the state of Georgia and United States,” Jarrard said. “Local regulations are great. But what we’ve typically found is they run to the next county over. This would lend itself to a state solution.”

The problem is the criminal laws in Georgia have to give people fair notice of what is illegal, he said, but they have to identify a list of chemical compositions that are illegal, which the chemists can easily go back and change.

“I don’t think they have a true sinister desire to kill our kids,” Jarrard said.

“But I do think they have a desire to make money, and it’s what they’re going to continue to do so long as the market and demand are there.”

The synthetic designer drugs present some unique public policy challenges, Jarrard said.

“The goal is to mimic the effects of THC,” he said. “A lot of times these chemicals are much more diabolical than marijuana. Marijuana at least is natural, and although it may be supplemented with things, these synthetic cannabinoids that are attempting to emulate it actually contain a literal smorgasbord of chemical compositions that are intended to simulate the negative effects of THC.”

The synthetic drugs are created in laboratories, which Jarrard said he emphasizes with his children. The drugs are often sold and marketed as legal alternatives to marijuana and are packaged without any information of safety risks, which he said teens may not care about anyway.

“These can kill your child and are conveniently sold at gas stations, convenience stores and online,” Jarrard said.

“They are typically sold under the guise of being herbal incense or potpourri.

They are sold with an emphasis on marketing to children, in fact if you look at the packaging that is clearly the intent.”

One of the most difficult parts of working toward regulation for the synthetic substances is that it often changes from different batches. Jarrard said you could go to the store and buy two

packages and they could be completely different. Often, the drugs are composed of dried leaves and lawn clippings wrapped in brightly colored packages, most commonly known as K2 or spice.

Jarrard said the FDA is attempting to buckle down on regulating the drugs by warning the public that K2 and spice often contain a chemical used in rat poisoning.

“We are at a crossroads where public policy is struggling to catch up with the science and chemistry behind it,” he said. “In 2012, the state of Georgia tried to take this on when they adopted ‘Chase’s Law.’ At that time, it was considered cutting edge because it listed the chemical compounds that were considered part of K2 or spice. It’s almost antiquated before the ink is even dry because the chemists are able to reconfigure the composition of the drug.”

Northern Forsyth trail plan to connect community, businesses

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County wants to increase its trail system with a new subarea network designed to connect parks with people in the northern part of the county.

The Forsyth County Commission discussed the plan proposed by consultants Kimley-Horn and Associates Sept. 25.

The subarea plan, which spans portions of district 1, 4 and 5, uses the Forsyth County Bicycle Transportation & Pedestrian Walkways 2025 Plan as a template. It incorporates land use connections between neighborhoods, county facilities and the county’s natural resources, including Lake Lanier, Sawnee Mountain and the Etowah River.

For a price tag of nearly $80,000, Kimley-Horn will review county data, consider

all potential needs and host input sessions. It should take roughly 4-6 months.

Vanessa Bernstein-Goldman, deputy director for Forsyth County Planning and Community Development, said the connections would be primarily between county parks, but also schools and neighborhoods.

“Prior to the northern area developing out, the vision is to have a plan in place to where we can, in addition to planning for the Greenway system that’s in our Bike and Pedestrian Plan, to look at connection trails and for additional trail systems between Eagle’s Beak, Sawnee Mountain, across Ga. 400 to Lake Lanier,” she said.

“This is a large area, but looking at our natural assets of Sawnee Mountain, our lakes and rivers, and creating a recreational system.”

Cumming Fair runs from Oct. 4-14

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — One of the most anticipated events of the year, the Cumming Country Fair, is finally in town until October 14.

The event runs for 10 days straight, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight on Fridays, 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays and 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

Admission is $7 cash only for ages 11 and older and free for younger.

The Cumming Fairgrounds is located at 235 Castleberry Road.

One of the biggest features this year is country singer Trace Adkins who performs at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Other themed nights include free student admission, senior day and the American BullRiders Tour.

Fairgrounds Director Tracy Helms has worked as an events coordinator for the Fairgrounds since 1997, but in April he was named the administrator after longtime director Dave Horton retired.

When he first started, Helms said only the Cumming Country Fair and Festival and a Fourth of July events were on the calendar.

Sen. Gooch appointed as chair of Senate Study Committee ATLANTA —Sen. Steve Gooch, who covers portions of Dawson and Forsyth counties, has been appointed by Lt. Governor Casey Cagle to serve as chair of the Senate Study Committee on evaluating the school year calendar of Georgia public schools.

Forsyth County judge awarded heroism medal FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County attorney and Magistrates Court Judge Phill Bettis is a recent recipient of the American Legion Heroism Medal for saving the life of a 2-year-old toddler this past summer.

Bettis, a Forsyth County Native who has been practicing law for nearly 40 years, rescued the boy from the backyard pool of an unoccupied home in mid-July.

The Emory University Law School graduate heard the youngster was missing from his home. Acting on a hunch, Bettis went to a home he knew to be unoccupied in his neighborhood. It was there he located the boy floating in the pool. Bettis jumped in and saved the boy.

Commander Pete Esker presented the American Legion’s Distinguished Heroism Medal at the Alpharetta American Legion Post 201’s September meeting, and saluted Bettis for his action before pinning the medal on his lapel.

Millennials are thriving Whoever spread the idea that millennials are lazy have never met the 2018 class of Thriving Under 30 from the University of West Georgia.

In the interest of Kathleen Sturgeon transparency, I have to give you a heads Editor kathleen@appenmediagroup.com up: I was one of those honorees.

There’s nothing like sitting in a group at your alma mater with your entire family all dressed up, shaking hands with the president and listening to the accomplishment of your peers to humble a person.

Of course, my name was last on the list so I sat through the bios and distinctions the others in the group had accomplished since they left our university.

It was a unique experience to be surrounded by people who may not have a lot in common with me, but share the bond of all being University of West Georgia graduates and under the age of 30.

Millennials so often are called lazy, killing industries or are too busy taking selfies.

But what if I told you one of the girls on the Thriving Under 30 list, Victoria Bamboo, aspires to use her background as a personal stylist to open a women’s shelter to restore positivity into the residents by helping them regain their fashion sense. She said she believes when someone looks good, they feel good.

People who constantly look down on my generation might call her vain or narcissistic at first due to her being focused on her appearance.

But without giving her a second glace, they never would have learned her future goals and aspirations to turn her love of fashion into helping others.

There was also Calvin Moore, a program manager with the U.S. Air Force whose mother had to accept his award on his behalf, and Eric Graise, a double amputee who stars in a YouTube show all about dancing.

In previous Thriving Under 30 classes, the honorees included linebackers in the NFL, forensic investigators and advocates for victims going through the judicial process.

If I had to name adjectives to describe my peers, I would say motivated, resilient, loyal and adaptable.

Local group launches gun safety campaign

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Before any of Amy Hubbart’s three children go to a friend’s house for a sleepover, she will call the parent to have a chat.

That talk is about something important to Hubbart and the other members of the Be SMART group who want to create awareness about gun safety.

The group, which is an arm of the Moms Demand Action group, is not political in nature and does not want to argue or lecture the public, Hubbart said.

Instead, they aim to simply educate gun owners and non-owners alike about how to keep kids safe when around firearms.

“We’re trying to reduce the unintentional shootings of children by children a lot of times and to reduce the incidents of suicide by gun which often happens, especially by young people, when guns are accessible,” she said. “I feel like weekly I read about an unintentional shooting where a child has gotten hold of a weapon and either shot themselves or someone else.”

• Tell your peers to be SMART. “Asking about the presence of guns in others’ homes is something we talk to

people about a lot, and it’s something I had to learn and be comfortable doing,” Hubbart said. “If my kids are going over to someone’s house and I haven’t met them before, just like if my child had a food allergy I would let them know to be mindful of the food. Or do they have a pool and will the kids be monitored?

There are ways to ask in a nonjudgmental and non-confrontational way.”

Usually, the response when asked these questions are casual, she said.

“People understand this isn’t a judgment or having a discussion about the Second Amendment,” she said. “It’s just making sure the guns are locked away where my kids can’t get to them.

The stories and unintentional shootings are all too common.”

According to the national Be SMART group, nearly 300 unintentional shootings occur by children every year. Nearly 500 more die by suicide with a gun.

“We believe safety is an adult re-

sponsibility,” she said. “I talk to my kids what to do if there’s a gun. But we are the adults and are the ones who buy the guns and own them. It’s up to us to make sure they’re stored responsibly.”

At events, the group will hand out cable locks for the guns and gun safes.

The goal isn’t to preach to the gun owners — and Hubbart said many involved own guns — but to tell the public how to own their guns safely.

“Whether it’s my kid or your kid, I just want our children to be safe,” she said.

“It’s something that we can absolutely reduce the number because it’s in our control to be responsible. This is something we can prevent.

I don’t know how to cure childhood cancer, but this is something we can talk to people about. Everyone can agree we don’t want our kids getting to our guns, so how can we be safe and responsible.”

Division chief Head named interim Fire Chief

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — For more than 30 years, Division Chief Barry Head has been protecting Forsyth County in some capacity with the Fire Department and Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Now, he’s taking on a new role as the interim fire chief effective Oct. 17 following the retirement of longtime Fire Chief Danny Bowman.

Head began his commitment to the fire department when he was 18 as a volunteer firefighter.

He began his fulltime service to the county in 1990 as a dispatcher in the Sheriff’s Office. While there, he was promoted three times, achieving the rank of sergeant.

In 1997, he transferred to the Fire Department as a fire inspector, with the first career firefighters being hired the next year.

In 1999, Head moved from fire inspector to firefighter. In 2001 he was promoted to fire lieutenant and in 2012 to division chief, fire marshal.

He has been in his current position of division chief, field operation since 2017.

“It’s surreal,” Head said. “I’m excited.

My job is to maintain the direction of the department during the transition to the next fire chief. I’m up to the task. I would have never dreamed I’d find myself in this position.”

As someone who has seen the department grow from the ground up, Head said it’s rewarding to take this next step.

“All the dedication, work and training I’ve done over the years are paying off,” he said.

The current chief, Bowman, is retiring Oct. 16 after 50 years in fire services.

Bowman has been with Forsyth County since 2001, and Head has worked under him the entire time.

“He has commitment to building a solid foundation for the department to grow on,” Head said. “He has done a phenomenal job. I’m not sure how long we’ll be in this interim point. My job is to make sure the projects we have in the pipeline don’t get lost in the shuffle of the transition.”

Being part of something bigger than himself is what drives Head to keep pushing on every day.

“I want to give back to our community and serving the people who live in our community,” he said. “It’s the core value of who I am.”

Alpharetta’s oldest building gets new life amid downtown development

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — With dozens of new office buildings and retail shops coming online in downtown Alpharetta, it’s getting hard to keep up.

But in the wake of all the new development sparked by the $85 million City Center project, Alpharetta officials are celebrating their efforts to guide the growth with an eye toward the past.

They point out that the City Center development itself has restored the Jones House, built in 1914, and converted it into a restaurant. Many of the other shops and buildings that occupy the retail area copy old-style architecture from the city’s younger days, and some duplicate long-gone buildings that once occupied the same space.

Even the orbiting developments — the shops, the offices and the homes — have been required to account for historic structures on the properties they have developed or are in the process of developing. Most have been required to restore the old buildings as a condition of rezoning.

“It’s always a good thing when we can have a developer pay to restore a historic building,” City Councilman Donald Mitchell said after a recent zoning hearing.

One of the city’s greatest coups came this year when Park City Partners announced plans to restore what is believed to be the city’s oldest building as part of its development plans along Roswell Street. The developer is constructing a three-story building, consisting of about 8,000 square feet of ground level retail/restaurant and 22,000 square feet of office nearby.

Park City Partners’ new mixed-use development on Roswell Street in Alpharetta includes restoration of the Skelton-Teasley House seen in front.

In exchange for zoning concessions, Park City will restore and protect the historic Skelton-Teasley House at 61 Roswell Street. The use of the old home will be limited to retail, restaurant or office. The exterior of the structure will be restored prior to final certificate of occupancy.

In addition, landscaping will be designed to complement the time period of the structure. An easement will be recorded providing for use of the SkeltonTeasley House yard as amenity space.

No fencing will be permitted.

Mitchell said the city’s efforts to preserve historic property is unique.

The Skelton-Teasley House was built in 1856 for Dr. Oliver Skelton, a local physician and the city’s first postmaster.

His daughter and son-in-law John Teasley inherited the home. John Teasley was a major land speculator who was thought to be the wealthiest man in the city at that time. The Teasley family were founding members of the Clear Springs Missionary Baptist Church, managed the Dodd Hotel and worked at the Philips-Land Sawmill.

Most recently, the property has been home to an art gallery and accounting office.

Alpharetta’s slate of historic buildings includes some 60 homes and commercial structures. Mitchell said the drive to adopt an ordinance protecting these buildings began about five years ago when Community Development Director Kathi Cook worked with him to draft a proposal that was eventually incorporated into the city code.

Other recent historic renovations that came about because of the ordinance include the Lewis-Manning House on Cumming Street and the nearby Manning property – both restored and incorporated into new developments.

The city also requires developers who incorporate a historic structure within their project to employ similar architecture in the surrounding buildings.

“I think it’s one of the most important things we as a city have done as far as keeping our character,” Mitchell said. “You can have historic preservation and economic development go hand in hand.”

While at West Georgia, Sturgeon was on the staff of the West Georgian student newspaper holding positions of news editor and copy editor. She won the Excellence Award in Print Journalism from the Mass Communications Department in 2014 and the Toyal Jackson “Making a Difference” Award from Student Government Association.

She had multiple internships while a student, including in the communications department at Fulton County Schools and as an editorial intern with Appen Media. Post-graduation, she landed a job at Appen Media where she worked her way up from reporter to editor in just two years.

Exterior shutter trends for 2018 Exterior Shutters plays an important part in the overall look and feel of your home. Let’s explore some of the popular trends we see for 2018.

Simplicity: Try using simple shutters for a pure, uncluttered effect to allow other beautiful features on the outside of your home to shine. It is in line with minimalism, where you incorporate clean, refreshing looks, while adding a nice touch to your decor.

To follow this trend, use shutters with sharp lines, minimal details and neutral colors. Here we will propose something like a flat panel shutter, and/ or a shutter with one large single panel, or even a board and batten style with no battens (horizontal pieces).

Lighten up: Color plays a big role in the overall appearance of your home, and while exterior shutters are typically dark colored, we’ve seen an uptick in lighter colored shutters. This works especially well when trying to modernize the look of an older building. Light colored walls, combined with shutters in a slightly darker hue seems to be the norm. Whites and greys works very well and is a trend that will be with us for a while.

Stick with the basics: Exterior shutters should never overpower the look of your house and not all homes lend itself to the exotic. There’s nothing wrong with some traditional Raised Panel style shutters or even Louvered shutters to give a traditional, formal house a neat and tidy look. Board

and Batten shutters works well on a house with a mix of exterior surfaces (brick and stone, or siding and shingles).

For Raised Panel style shutters, make sure the panels mimic the windows, for Louvers you can try a wider slat, and with Board and Batten shutters we see a trend to use more, but narrower Boards (vertical pieces).

Add flair and personality: Another subtle way of giving you home a one-of-a-kind appearance is to add custom cutouts to your shutters.

Let your home’s personality shine with just about any shape you can imagine, from stars and crescent moons to palm trees and hearts. Go bold and traditional with a full cutout, or subtle and interesting with only a small relief cut on the outside corner. This obviously only works on paneled or Board and Batten style shutters.

Knights prevail over Raiders in another series thriller

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta and Centennial rivalry series served another exciting battle Friday night with the Knights winning a tight contest to improve to 3-0 in Region 7-AAAAAA play.

This contest was the fourth straight meeting between the teams decided by one score, Friday’s contest could have been decided earlier.

Centennial led 7-3 with under five seconds remaining in the second quarter when Alpharetta’s Bryce Trout lined up for a 39-yard field goal. The Knights blocked the kick, but as the ball was scooped by a Centennial player, an official blew a whistle, calling the play dead.

As the Centennial band entered the field and players made their way to the locker rooms, officials called the players back out. Due to the errant whistle, and with no penalties on the play of the legal kick, officials called the kick to be replayed.

Trout converted his second attempt, sending the Knights’ stands and sidelines into an angered frenzy.

However, the Knights came out on top with stout defensive play, a touchdown pass from Max Brosmer to Freddy Fairley early in the fourth quarter and a stop on the final play of the game.

“I couldn’t be prouder of my kids and my assistant coaches,” head coach Michael Perry said. “[The blocked kick whistle] was the most horrendous call I’ve seen in my life, but we said at halftime that’s like life. So how are you going to respond?”

“The defensive effort was tremendous, and I’m especially proud of how our secondary played because Alpharetta has some great receivers.”

Alpharetta also helped Centennial’s cause with dropped passes and costly penalties in Knights’ territory.

The Raiders defense also had a strong showing, but the Knights found pay dirt by chipping away and with an 80-yard touchdown from Brosmer to Richard Shaw in the second quarter.

Brosmer was 17-25 passing for 245 yards.

Shaw, Drake Mason and Freddy Fairley each had four crucial receptions in the absence of standout Julian Nixon who is out for the season with an injury.

“Everybody counted us out when Julian Nixon got hurt,” Perry said. “Freddie and Drake, my two outside receivers, they played outstanding tonight.”

Alpharetta set up a thrilling finish by driving to Centennial’s 19-yard line with five seconds remaining. However, Kevon Angry interception Gerdes on a desperation pass to the end zone to ice the game.

The Knights’ dramatic win earned them payback from their heartbreaking loss to the Raiders last year. Alpharetta erased a two score lead in the fourth quarter and won with a field goal as time expired. It remains Centennial’s only region loss in Perry’s tenure.

“The kids have had this game circled for a long time,” Perry said.

The win propels the Knights to a tie atop the region standings with Johns Creek. Centennial returns to action Friday against Chattahoochee. Alpharetta (3-2, 2-1) travels to play North Atlanta.

Forsyth employee chosen as state nurse of the year

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — As it turns out, some of the best school nursing in the state is happening in Forsyth County.

Chattahoochee Elementary School nurse Louisa Holcomb was named this summer as the Georgia School Nurse of the Year during the annual Georgia Association of School Nurses conference in Athens.

After hearing about the other nominees, Holcomb said she didn’t think she would win.

“There were some people I thought would greatly deserve the honor,” she said. “I was extremely surprised at the conference when it was announced I was the winner.

I was awestruck and humbled because I knew the caliber of the other nominees. I had said from the beginning it was a great honor to be nominated and thought of enough for that honor.”

Holcomb’s career began when she graduated nursing school in 1986. She was an ER and critical care nurse at first and practiced in various settings.

After moving to Forsyth County, she stayed at home to raise her young children.

In 2000, she became involved at Chattahoochee Elementary, first with the PTO. Then, she realized she could put her nursing skills to work.

She began subbing in clinics around the county until a job opened up at Chattahoochee Elementary.

“I have a huge appreciation for educators as a whole,” she said. “Coming from not knowing anything about the educational setting for elementary students to work daily with educators whose heart is for students, whether it’s to meet their basic or educational needs,

In the school setting, you’re looking at more of their needs from basic, psychological, health and educational and putting it all in a package that works best for the students. they pour everything they have into these children.”

Coming from a nurturing profession like nursing, Holcomb said joining the school system gave her a chance to take that to the next level.

“I become involved in all parameters of students’ lives,” she said. “Before, I was in the ER setting looking at just their immediate need. In the school setting, you’re looking at more of their needs from basic, psychological, health and educational and putting it all in a package that works best for the students.

I have to take all that into account when I’m treating a child.”

Ultimately, Holcomb enjoys the ability to make a difference in the lives of students who may not get other chances to visit health care professionals.

“The lives of the people I am able to touch on a daily basis is what I love most about school nursing,” she said.

“I know there’s a need for me, and if we all feel needed, it drives us to be there and be all we can be for the people we’re serving.”

New coffeehouse employs people with disabilities

By NIK GLATT interns@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A group of local volunteers, some with children on the autism spectrum, have come together to open the BrewAble coffeehouse to employ individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Under the guidance of Envision Alpharetta, a local non-profit, the group formed BrewAble with a mission to provide employment that will train and integrate the “Brewistas” into the community.

On Sept. 25, the group announced it will be opening in January of 2019 at the Alpharetta Community Center on Roswell Street. Hours will be from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday-Saturday.

The volunteers formed a steering committee last year to solidify and execute the key concepts of the coffeehouse.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 80 percent of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed. In Georgia, an individual no longer receives job support or training assistance at school after the age of 22.

Volunteer Jeanette Dummer said this has been a dream for the group for more than three years.

“I’ve had parents and young people speak about the isolation they experience and the many difficulties that they face in finding employment once a per-

While some find work with a flexible and supportive employer, many will not.

Isolation after high school is a real and debilitating problem in our community.”

Often, people with disabilities are at risk for unemployment or underemployment, according to volunteer Mary Ulich.

“We’re really looking to combat those things,” she said. “At BrewAble, all of the employees will be given the opportunity to train and learn in a cafe environment.”

In addition, the employees will have shifts accommodated to fit their needs.

BrewAble aspires for the employees to become a family by working together and instilling the values of the “seven Cs:” coffee, confidence, communication, cooperation, collaboration, commitment and community. Each value contributes to the supportive setting and celebrates shared success.

While the group may excel at brewing a strong cup of Joe, “Brewing Confidence” is the tagline chosen to represent BrewAble, which Ulich said will help make the community a better place for these individuals.

Downtown Alpharetta was chosen as an ideal location for its walkability and potential to interact with the community.

“We know our community is very open and welcoming, and we’re hoping to work with that,” Ulich said. “Every person has the capacity to contribute when they are part of a supportive work setting.

We know each of our employees that have a disability will be able to reach greater heights by working together with the community, so we also plan on brewing community, communication, collaboration, cooperation and commitment to support this project and the individuals

who work there.”

For the future, BrewAble will create a business template that can be adopted by other employers who want to incorporate employment for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

As a nonprofit, BrewAble will rely on its social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as the community to advertise and promote the business.

District 4 Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills, in whose district the majority of the subarea is located, said without a plan, it becomes difficult to ask develop-

ers to connect back to the trails.

“It’s almost like a figment of our imagination when we don’t have anything adopted,” she said. “We’re hoping to have something like Alpharetta, where we can have a trail system adopted.

Then we can ask the developers to build the trail system and they can get credits for their impact fees. So we aren’t taking five years to develop 1 mile of trail. The way we’re going right now, we’re never

going to finish this trail system in my lifetime.”

One of the fundamental platforms of this plan, Bernstein-Goldman said, is to go deeper than the current Bike and Pedestrian Plan, so when zonings come in, the county can leverage the trail system.

“When people get on in District 2, they’ll be able to stay on the entire way,” Mills said. “We’ve got people who are really interested from each district.”
