Elaborate kidnap plot turns out to be hoax FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — School and Sheriff’s officials were engaged in a tense hostage negotiation that turned out to be a hoax July 30.

The incident began shortly before 3 p.m. when a teacher notified the school resource officer she had received a phone call claiming her husband had been kidnapped.

The officer took charge of the phone call, identifying himself as a friend of the teacher, and began negotiating with the caller who claimed he had the woman’s husband in a nearby apartment.

The caller said he had been involved in a traffic accident with the woman’s husband and demanded $900 for the car insurance deductible, a claim the officer found suspicious.

Nevertheless, the officer continued negotiating and gestured for school officials to contact 911 and ask for a hostage negotiation team member to come to the school. He also directed school staff to attempt to locate the husband at his place of work.

5400 block of Memphis Street in north Forsyth County at 3:45 a.m. They were contacted by someone earlier after that person received a text or call from Jackielyn Belangel Brewster, 32, which detailed her plans to kill herself.

Upon arrival, deputies found Jackielyn and an adult male, identified as Adrian Lavaughan Brewster, 50, dead inside the home.

Two children, ages 9 and 3, were found in the house unharmed. They are

safe in an undisclosed location.

The investigation at this point has determined the Jackielyn reportedly murdered her husband sometime over the weekend, probably early on Friday, and took her own life around 3:30 a.m.

Monday morning, Aug. 20 after sending the text or call.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is investigating. Details will not be released until the GBI confirms all the information.

As the negotiation continued, the officer learned the husband had been located at work and was safe.

The officer turned over the phone to a female officer who pretended to be the teacher. The resource officer contacted T-Mobile to track the call, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

The deputy, who didn’t see any signs of abuse, told the owners even with the windows and sunroof cracked, the car interior can get hot.

Shoppers alert deputies of dog left in vehicle FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Concerned citizens alerted deputies Aug. 12 when they saw a dog left in a car outside the Walmart on Browns Bridge Road.

The store manager said multiple shoppers alerted him that the owners left their small dog in the car for at least 10 minutes.

The manager attempted to make contact over the PA system, but no one came forward.

The owner was found at the pharmacy, and became upset to the point of using profanity and acting irate, according to the manager. When deputies arrived, they found one of the owners in the car holding the dog.

The other owner told deputies he did leave the dog in the car. However, he said he left a note on the windshield, cracked all the windows and sunroof, left cold water for the dog and let an employee know he would be right back. The owner said he and his wife went inside

LinkedIn scam presents fake employment offer JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A man called police Aug. 14 after he realized that a job offer he received on LinkedIn was a scam.

The man was contacted on Aug. 2 by someone he thought was an old acquaintance. The person offered the man an opportunity to become a mystery shopper for a marketing company, and the man agreed because he was familiar with the company from his previous work. The suspected scammer sent the man a check for $23,000 which the man deposited Aug. 13.

The man was then instructed to purchase $2,500 in Walmart gift cards and purchase a $30 sweatshirt and report on the customer service.

After doing so, the man was then told to purchase a cashier’s check and send a photo of it.

At this point, the man became suspicious and then realized the suspect’s email had extra letters in it that the marketing company’s official name does not contain.

County sets limits to short-term rentals

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Come next spring, it will be a bit harder for those with short-term rentals to do business in Forsyth County.

The County Commission revised the county’s existing short-term rental ordinance Aug. 21 to clamp down on unbridled rental arrangements and ban certain short-term rentals in residential areas.

The action follows months of hearings and hours of public comment on the issue.

Commissioners voted Aug. 2 to enforce the current ordinance. But at the Aug. 21 meeting, the board went further into what that enforcement looks like.

The commission voted: For county staff to draft a modification the county’s unified development code that authorizes short-term rentals in residentially zoned properties for periods of less than 30 days only upon applying for and receiving a conditional use permit.

All other short-term rentals in residential zones, or any rentals for periods of less than 30 days, shall be prohibited completely.

A conditional use permit may not be sought for a short-term rental permit if the property is in an identifiable residential neighborhood with attributes such as a residential common area, amenity area, common subdivision name or an HOA. The county manager will retain a

short-term rental company to assist staff in locating all short-term rentals in the county to begin the process of identification to further enforce the codes.

The county will issue letters in advance to all identifiable short-term rental properties advising of the conditional use permit process, and that continuing to engage in short-term rentals after Jan. 1, 2020 without a permit will subject them to enforcement actions.

The action comes weeks after the com-

mission voted to direct planning staff and legal counsel to create a proposal for a conditional use permit that would define if and where short-term rentals could operate and incorporate some or all of the elements of the proposed ordinance as performance standards.

Now, County Attorney Ken Jarrard said based on discussions he’s had with the officials, there may be additional ways the county would like to see the short-term rental rules applied.

“Part of the genesis for this entire discussion about an ordinance was because enforcing short-term rental, particularly with respect to the information we need to enforce, was challenging,” Jarrard said.

“We may have more information at our disposal to begin issuing warnings, citations and maybe commencing civil actions if that’s the direction of the board.”

As it stands now, the proposed ordinance would require short-term renters to apply for a permit and would limit short-term rentals to a twice-a-month maximum and a six-night minimum, which many renters argue is too restrictive.

County’s 11th middle school in the works

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Plans are being finalized for Forsyth Schools’ 11th middle school to be built off Hyde Road in northwest Forsyth near Ga. 20.

The Forsyth Board of Education approved an architectural design contract at its Aug. 21 meeting.

Director of Facilities Planning Tim Amerson said the design work for the school began about a year ago.

8th grade to serve an estimated 1,500 students.

The school has a new design based on the South Forsyth and Riverwatch middle schools, which have larger capacities.

The architectural estimate for construction comes at $33.7 million. The estimated architect and engineering consultants cost is $1.8 million. An estimated $7.2 million will be included from state capital outlay funding.

Superintendent Jeff Bearden said this spring voters approved a $295 million bond, which included the construction of two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and a new facility for the academies of creative education, all by 2022. Construction is slated to begin in October 2019 with about 18 months of building, and an opening date of August 2021.

The timing of the new school is crucial as Forsyth County’s population continues to grow. Forsyth Schools is Georgia’s 7th largest public school district and home to over 48,000 students and 5,000 staff members.

There are currently 39 schools, including Denmark High School and the Alliance Academy for Innovation which opened earlier this month.

3 percent increase from 2017 to 2018.

The other counties on the list range from 171 students to 9,200 students, while Forsyth approaches 50,000 students.

At the Aug. 21 meeting, the board heard the first enrollment update since school began Aug. 2.

There have been more than 5,700 new registered students, a 4 percent increase from 2017.

More than 2,000 students started kindergarten in Forsyth County this year. By grade level, the county saw the most new students enrolled in kindergarten, with first and ninth grades also having large amounts of new pupils.

Last year there was a dip with about 5,500 students coming to the district.

Since 2007, the lowest number of newly enrolled students was in the 2008-09 school year where just over 4,600 students started.

However, that was around the peak of an influx of students with about 12 percent of students signing up for a Forsyth school.

Aside from the kindergartners who had never attended school before, the largest reason students were coming to Forsyth County was transferring from another district or state. Another 10 percent entered from a private school.

Cities, ZIP codes cause identity crisis for homeowners

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. —Forsyth County residents face a dilemma when writing their return address on an envelope.

Should they write “Cumming, Alpharetta, Gainesville or Suwanee?”

As it turns out, they can all put “Forsyth County” and call it a day.

It’s not a new problem.

Forsyth County Commissioners say they often hear from the public that the city that represents their zip code does not often reflect where they live.

Forsyth County is unique in that it contains only one city, and that city makes up less than 3 percent of the entire population, forcing the majority of residents to use an address that defines out-of-county areas such as Dawsonville, Ball Ground or Duluth.

It has ruffled enough feathers that commissioners drafted a resolution to send to Rep. Rob Woodall, who represents Georgia’s 7th District including Forsyth County, to recognize various postal codes within the county. Those postal codes include 30004, 30005, 30024, 30028, 30040, 30041, 30097,

The commission voted at its Aug. 21 meeting, with Commissioners Cindy Mills and Pete Amos against, to send the resolution to Woodall’s office.

Furthermore, it was determined citizens can use whatever city they want on letters. The postal code is the most crucial part of an address.

The resolution simply called for the U.S. Postal Service to recognize “Forsyth County” in place of any of the various cities.

This issue in part stems from the recent ongoing movement to create a second city within the county. This spring,

voters failed to pass a referendum that could have created the city of Sharon Springs within Forsyth County.

Since then, it members of the public have been looking for a way to brand their communities. Semanson said glazing over the various cities defeats that purpose.

“We’re kind of pulling in two different directions at once,” she said. “A lot of the cityhood movement or the desire to carve out character areas includes identifying with it. This seems to be going in the opposite direction.”

Commissioner Dennis Brown said the choice of return address is optional for citizens and doesn’t take away their ability to still identify with Alpharetta or Dawsonville while living within Forsyth County. He said he’s heard from businesses that didn’t identify with the city on their address, so they’d like to use the county identification instead.

“This is simply an option where if a business wants to use Forsyth County rather than their city address, they can,” he said. “You can do it anyway. This is a step toward more specificity. I’ve had several people ask. There’s no cost to do it.

We were just looking for them to have an option.”

City, County team up to construct water tower on Sawnee Mountain

City and county officials have agreed to build a water tank on the foothill, but not without stipulations. The Forsyth County Commission agreed to the temporary easement request on its property Aug. 21. But it set conditions: Recording of Forsyth County’s easements for the Greenway. The water tank’s coloring, fencing, etc. shall blend in to the background of the mountain.

Forsyth County staff shall coordinate a meeting with the Sawnee Mountain Preserve to allow involvement in tank design and landscaping.

Though the county will be in charge of the project, the city will construct the waterline, tank site and access driveway. The county was contacted by a local church which said it needed better water pressure, which the 250,000 gallon tank would provide. Deputy County Manager Tim Merritt said there are similar problems with low water

“It’s a pretty common issue with water systems that have a real change in topography and elevations where they serve,” he said. Cumming Director of Utilities Jonathon Heard said the city is now waiting for an easement from the county because the tank has to be on the side of the mountain on Tower Road to be at the correct elevation.

“We’re going to try to install the tank in a manner that’s not noticeable on the side of the mountain,” he said. “It’s a ground storage tank so it’s not very tall.

It’s about 40 feet tall.”

This would be the second tank on the side of Sawnee Mountain.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — After Tina Huck and her family moved to Forsyth County two years ago, she knew they made a good choice when she realized her new life calling.

The mother of two was at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church when she heard a presentation about Family Promise of Forsyth County Inc., which opened its doors in October of 2016.

“Just listening to the stories and what Family Promise does made me realize anyone of us could need this,” she said. “I needed to be a part of this.”

Initially she came on as a coordinator for St. Brendan’s, which is one of the program’s support churches, she transitioned to working with volunteers, and last fall she officially signed on as executive director.

Family Promise has been so successful since she joined, they just moved into their own space at 3335 Hutchinson Road in Cumming.

Family Promise of Forsyth County is a 30-90 day program. The nonprofit organization provides services and support to families undergoing homelessness and poverty in the county. The organization offers food and housing services — among other programs — to its clients.

It partners with area congregations to provide weekly housing and other services to help families get through the tough times.

“It’s called a ‘ministry of presence’ as far as the churches go, because they’re there to be with them during dinner time, provide activities in the evening and be with them overnight,” Huck said.

“They provide a safe feeling for the families to have in the church.”

“When families come in, it’s great to get a place to stay and be able to save money, but there needs to be a complete shift in paradigm for them to actually be long-term sustaining,” she said. “We’ve added in financial empowerment programs, a nutrition class and parenting classes.”

These changes have helped five families graduate from the program this year, which Huck said means they met weekly goals, saved money they need to get into their own place and have a bit of money left over.

When they graduate, the volunteers come together to throw a large celebration for the families, including furnishing the new home.

There have also been three other families who had a “successful separation,” she said, where they were able to save money and learn skills, without potentially hitting every goal or attending every class. But their progress shouldn’t be downplayed.

“Even if a family doesn’t graduate, the change for the children can be huge,” she said. “We had one family, who did graduate, but during the program their children had been out of sorts at school. Midway through the program,

My friends and family have all at one point or another had to listen to me ramble on about the book I just read or something in the news or my favorite parts of my travels through Europe. I am infinitely grateful for their patience, especially when they didn’t read that book or they couldn’t care less about that particular current event or they’ve never been to Europe and wish I would stop rubbing it in.

If this compulsion to both overthink and share those thoughts alienated potential friends, it served me well in school. All I had to do was type out my internal monologue, sprinkle in a few academic sources and voila, I had an

A+ paper. Recently I have embarked on a new platform to share my rants and reflections. Podcasts.

I have long been a listener of podcasts, from the political to pop cultural to the historical. They’re a great way to entertain yourself on a long drive or while you clean your house. Although, I’ve often wished I could interject myself into the conversations I was listening to.

Wind, a movie podcast named after one of the most famous films set and produced in Georgia and to date the highest grossing film adjusted for inflation.

Making a movie podcast was a natural fit for both my interests and my location. I’ve always been a film buff, soaking up movie trivia like a sponge.

And Georgia is one of the largest film and television producers in the world, with an estimated economic impact of $6 billion in 2016.

In my first episode, I interview Kathleen Bertrand, the founder of BronzeLens, an Atlanta-based film festival highlighting filmmakers of color. Kathleen, an Atlanta native, shares how the city has grown as a film hub and what it means for her.

Former landfill plot donated for Sheriff’s Office firearms training facility

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The old county landfill will get a second life when the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office takes over the site as a firearms training facility.

The Forsyth County Commission voted Aug. 21 to begin Phase 1 environmental testing on the nearly 17 acres which is on Old Federal Road in north Forsyth.

Due to the landfills surrounding this area, County Manager Eric Johnson said they want to do environmental testing.

“This is adjacent to our closed landfill, and because of recent tests on our land, we need to make sure the soil under this land being donated to the county doesn’t have any problems,” Johnson said. The training facility will sit near the space the former Hightower Landfill occupied right next to Eagle Point Landfill. Eagle Point has had ongoing issues over the past year and recently signed an agreement with the county allowing closer environmental supervision. The landfill has also proposed a methane gas refinery plant which has raised some resident concerns.

Funding was also approved for the Sheriff’s Office Litter Detail Service for the last half of the year from the Solid Waste Fund from host fee revenues. said. “We’ve purposefully done that because things happen in life. Junior Achievement to educate students on business

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — When Emily Durand toured the new Mike & Lynn Cottrell Junior Achievement Discovery Center at the University of North Georgia Aug. 23, she was inspired.

Durant, a seventh grader at North Forsyth Middle School, had visited a similar center in Gwinnett County last year. The North Georgia Center, sponsored by lead investors Mike and Lynn Cottrell, is the third in the state to open, behind Gwinnett and Atlanta, and is located on the campus of the Alliance Academy for Innovation, 1150 Lanier 400 Parkway.

Before visiting the Gwinnett center, Durand said they learned basic skills for becoming an entrepreneur, how to write a check, balance a check book and the difference between credit versus debit.

Each student was given a job they had to master prior to the field trip.

“All of these skills helped me to flourish and enjoy my experience even more that I would without them,” she said.

“We didn’t just read and learn about how businesses run. We got to live it for an entire day.”

The experience of pretending to be a CFO for Wells Fargo, she said, changed her life and shaped her future. And now she is excited other students will get that same chance in Forsyth County.

“I used my classroom and Junior Achievement job skills to learn more about work ethics,” Durand said. “I learned how to keep very accurate records, keep my area neat and that using kindness and respect when addressing people is a must.”

“So many students grow up without knowing any business skills at all,” she said. “Therefore they end up at lowerpaying jobs or having to rely on the skills they learned from their parents to succeed. Most importantly, I got to work with my peers and some amazing volunteers at starting and running a successful business. We worked as a team, and I learned so much about what my parents and other adults do every day.”

Durand will be one of 15,000 middle school students annually who visit the 25,000-square-foot North Georgia center.

All Forsyth County middle schoolers will take field trips to the center throughout the school year to learn life skills, such as how to run a business, pay taxes and balance a checkbook.

Before students set foot in the center, they will spend about 20 hours of instruction time learning lessons that will help them succeed during the simulations. For the past two years, the district has piloted the program in schools so students are able to experience it in their classrooms.

The sixth graders will participate in “JA Biztown,” where they will interact within a simulated economy and take on the challenge of running a business, according to Forsyth County Schools College and Career Development Director Dr. Valery Lowe.

The seventh or eighth graders will participate in “JA Finance Park,” an immersive simulation that enables them to develop skills to successfully navigate today’s economic environment.

Forsyth Superintendent Jeff Bearden said the center will give each student an opportunity to experience a glimpse at what their futures will hold.

“We are providing them a chance to be prepared with in-class lessons and then come into this incredibly immersive space and see it and do it for themselves,” he said. “While we all have nuances of our missions, a central goal we share is to nurture and develop these students to prepare them to thrive here and most importantly in their lives after.” The center will open students’ eyes to the depth of possibilities available for their futures, Bearden said.

“By providing this opportunity in middle school, students can enter high school and post-secondary education with a solid foundation of career pathway exposure and experiences that help bring learning to life,” he said. “They will be ready to build on that foundation and be engaged in the next phase in their education, empowered with knowledge of how to make their dreams a reality.”

Judges appointed to Forsyth County Juvenile Court FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Superior Court judges of the Bell-Forsyth Judicial Circuit recently announced the appointments of Christopher Willis and J. Russell Jackson to the positions of Juvenile Court jACKSON Judge.

They were sworn in Aug. 13 in the Forsyth County Courthouse.

Willis attended Harding University and earned his juris doctorate from St. Mary’s University School of Law. For the past 23 years, Willis has been in private practice focusing on criminal and civil litigation.

A registered mediator, Judge Willis has served as an associate magistrate for the Forsyth County Magistrate Court since January 2015.

Jackson attended the University of Georgia and received his juris doctorate from the University of Georgia

School of Law. Jackson began his legal career as a law clerk for Superior Court Judges Frank C. Mills, III and Richard S. Gault.

He practiced law until he was appointed as the first Forsyth willis County judge to serve fulltime as a Juvenile Court judge. Jackson has served on the Juvenile Court bench for the past 19 years.

Selected by the Superior Court Bench of Forsyth County, the judges will hear cases involving allegations of dependency (abuse and neglect), child in need of services cases, delinquency, parental rights and traffic violations for juveniles.

While the Juvenile Court previously held only one full-time judgeship, the Superior Court recently established a second full-time judgeship to better serve families and children in Forsyth County.

DataScan opens doors to new headquarters in Alpharetta City Center

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Seventeen months after hefting a ceremonial shovel of dirt in downtown Alpharetta, DataScan President Ed Brown opened the doors to the company’s new headquarters.

Brown was on hand Aug. 21 to welcome 160 associates to their new digs in City Center. The tech company will occupy the top three floors of the development’s four-story office building, close to 37,000 square feet of space. The building’s first floor, another 7,500 square feet of space, will be dedicated to retail.

“It’s kind of magical,” Brown said, recalling his frequent visits to the site over the past year, watching the walls go up, the flooring go in and the whole building take shape.

DataScan announced last year it was moving its headquarters from Forsyth County to the new $20 million building which sits amid Alpharetta’s new downtown.

The office building features its own medical clinic for associates and mixes old and new architecture with pronounced modern design elements. The exterior features a brick facade with dramatic arches inspired by the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The interior space is open, airy and bright with an industrial feel, exposed beams and plenty of collaboration spaces. There is also a covered patio on the fourth floor that overlooks the City Center where associates can relax, eat lunch or work from their laptops.

A crowd of more than 200, including close to 150 DataScan associates, were on hand Aug. 21 for the official opening of the company’s new headquarters at 415 South Broad Street in the new Alpharetta City Center. aimed at achieving high performance in water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, recycling program and indoor environmental quality.

Brown said the move to Alpharetta will bring an annual payroll of $20 million to its 160 technology-related positions. The company provides wholesale loan accounting services and manages risk by using advanced technology and skilled associates.

On the business side, Brown said, the move made sense in terms of recruiting and retaining talent.

“We wanted to give more of a work-

life balance,” Brown said. “Our old location, we were kind of remote. Here, it allows our associates to be able to enjoy the nice restaurants; they have a Publix right next door. So the work-life balance is a big part of it for us.”

The amenities that come with a City Center location are only part of it, Brown said. The company maintains and fosters close ties with the community, he said.

“Not only are we employing a number of associates here, but our associates have donated around 7,400 hours to community charity since 2006,” Brown

said. “We have donated in both Forsyth and Fulton County around $450,000.”

DataScan recently donated $50,000 to North Fulton Community Charities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its parent company, JM Family Enterprises.

In addition, local associates have volunteered to plant 50 trees locally.

The company is coordinating with Trees Atlanta and the Arbor Day Foundation to coordinate locations.

Fleet of companies eyeing move to Atlanta If this is the calm before the storm in terms of new companies moving in and new office buildings going up, then it’s going to be some storm.

Several announcements I’ve Geoff smith read this past week Assurance Financial, have made me go gsmith@lendtheway.com from wondering if the expanse of new office development starting and being planned around the city was too much, to wondering if it’s not enough. The first article I saw didn’t really raise my eyebrows, but confirmed that in Atlanta – we’ve still got it. The metro area added 75,800 new residents between April of last year to April of this year.

That brought our total population to 4,555,900, which the Atlanta Business Chronicle pointed out is more than the population of 25 U.S. states. If you are wondering, Cherokee and Henry counties grew the fastest, while Fulton, then Gwinnett, then DeKalb group the most.

So while that news confirmed that folks are still moving in droves to Atlanta now, the next couple of articles predicted that they’ll continue to move here in the coming years.

According to the Chronicle, in a speech he gave to the Atlanta Rotary, Gov. Nathan Deal said the state is working with 20 good prospective companies that may move operations to the Atlanta area – each would bring an average of 850 new jobs.

That would be over 16,000 new jobs if Deal and company are able to close them. One of those deals could be a Fortune 500 company that is said to be in talks with the developer of the Gulch in downtown Atlanta, according to reports.

If you are not familiar the Gulch, it is about 40 acres of parking lots and rail lines that sit just east of Mercedes-

Benz Stadium. Most of the property sits well below street level, and initial plans are to bring all of it up to street-level in the way of a platform. This project alone is estimated to take three years.

Once built, developers and planners are envisioning 15 brand-new city blocks with roads, sidewalks, bike lanes, gathering spaces and parks. The developer’s plan is to add between 1.8 million and 9.3 million square feet of office space – a big stretch that leaves the door open for a major company to move in and drastically influence how it is developed. And yes, it has been said that the Gulch would be the top target should Amazon decide to move its headquarters here. And no, the Fortune 500 company said to be talking with the developer is not Amazon. Final cost of that project will easily be into the billions.

The Gulch is a massive development. But massive is relatively normal right now in the metro area. The City of College Park is working on a 320-acre project that is right now being called Airport City. This project is said to be valued between $3 billion and $3.5 billion.

It is next to the airport and would include up to 10 million square feet.

Since we seem to maintain an average of 32 new residents a day, we are going to need more houses, offices and stores.

So I hope a good percentage of those new residents work in the construction industry. Since I’m a mortgage lender, I’m all too aware that there is a shortage of houses in the under $400,000-market. Builders are doing all they can to keep up, but simply don’t have enough workers to keep up with demand. Unemployment is at historic lows, so it’s hard to get people to jump away from other industries.

Titans make statement against South Forsyth

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Blessed Trinity came out swinging against Class 7A’s South Forsyth Friday night at home and asserted their status as one of the top teams in the state with an impressive 35-6 win.

The Titans defense, so pivotal in their state championship last season, held South’s starters to under 100 yards of total offense, pressured quarterback Drew Morris throughout the contest, forced multiple sacks and gave up just 22 yards rushing.

“The defensive plan was to get pressure,” Blessed Trinity head coach Tim McFarlin said. “We were giving up a lot of size up front, so I felt like we had to play really fast. Our defensive coaching staff and kids did an outstanding job.”

BT’s offense moved the ball effectively, racking up 193 yards passing and 119 yards rushing before backups were brought in to play in the fourth quarter.

The Titans’ offense fared well against South’s sizeable defensive front which includes Georgia Tech commit Jamal Camp. Elijah Green led the rushing charge with 81 yards and Steele Chambers had 27 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

Chambers also showed off his baseball skills, throwing two touchdowns on running back passes.

He connected with quarterback Jake Smith on a 12-yard score to put the Titans up 14-0 in the first quarter. Chambers’ second touchdown came with the Titans facing fourth-and-4 on South’s

32-yard line midway through the second. Chambers took the pitch, evaded pressure from the War Eagles and connected with Ryan Davis who scampered into the end zone.

“I was glad to see him throw those and see Jake (Smith) grab one,” McFarlin said. “We wanted to have some fun, and we felt like we needed to do that.

South is a good football team and we needed to do some things out of character.

We were not going to be able to go toe-to-toe with those guys all night.”

After jumping out to a 28-0 halftime lead, the Titans’ momentum sputtered in the third quarter with penalties.

BT incurred 11 flags on the night, many of them in the second half.

“We’ve got to learn to finish games,” McFarlin said. “You can’t let the scoreboard dictate how you play and I think we did tonight. We just got sloppy.”

However, BT’s defense continued to cause problems for South who were without starting running back Jordan Brunson for much of the game. South’s only score began with a fumble by BT’s second-team offense in their own territory midway through the fourth.

The Titans improved to 2-0 on the season, but they still face a monumentally difficult slate of games in the coming weeks, including Woodward Academy and Benedictine, two of the top programs in their respective classes.

“This is a good win, but it’s not going to get any easier,” McFarlin said.

South fell to 1-1 with the loss, their first regular season, on-field loss since October 2016.
