CUMMING, Ga. — The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office closed roads on Dahlonega Highway near Spot Road July 13 for four hours when a single-vehicle crash knocked out an electrical power pole. Authorities say the driver fled the scene, and officials have issued arrest warrants for failure to report an accident and striking a fixed object. The driver has been identified as Chad William Doster, a white male with a bald head and goatee weighing 120 pounds and standing 5 feet 3. Authorities said Doster was driving a

CUMMING, Ga. — A Forsyth County woman reported she had been swindled by computer scammers June 30. The incident started when she first noticed a pop-up on her computer displaying her Social Security number and a phone number to call for assistance. When she called the number, she spoke with one man who called himself “Chris” and another who identified himself as “Jeff Dawson.” Both spoke with a foreign accent. They told her that her computer was infected with viruses and it would cost $1,200 to $1,800 for repairs. The woman used her credit card to pay the $1,800. After a two-hour scan on her computer, new icons began to pop up on her screen. When she explained the situation to her neighbor, she was alerted to the possibility that it was a scam. The woman then called her bank and cancelled the payment. She also cancelled all forms of payment and was issued new cards. She proceeded to also freeze her credit and ensure the safety of her retirement plan.

Doug Rainwater. “Doster was more than likely impaired when he crashed so that’s the reason he fled.” The search for Doster continues. Camera reported stolen from back seat of vehicle ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Authorities questioned a man found parked along McFarland parkway July 13 when they noticed his rear passenger window shattered. The man said someone broke the window, and he was looking to see whether anything had been taken. The man later notified authorities that a Nikon D90 camera and lens were missing from the back seat. A serial number was provided and the total value of the camera, lens and bag was approximately $1,000.
Woman creates disturbance outside restaurant CUMMING, Ga. — The owner of the Bullpen restaurant on Freedom Parkway reported to authorities June 29 that a woman was trespassing outside of the restaurant after she had been refused service for entering with a lit cigarette. The business owner said the woman began yelling profanities and demanded a drink menu. When she moved to the front patio the business owner approached her with a security employee. When the woman was asked to leave, she began flipping her middle finger, us-

Conex box stolen in overnight theft ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Sheriff’s deputies received a report July 13 from a man who said a Conex container box had been stolen from a site occupied by CW Matthews Construction on Union Hill Road. The box had been seen on the property the previous night. Authorities noticed scrape marks where the box had been sitting and suspected the thief likely used a rollback wrecker to move the item. The box was described as off white with blue graffiti marks and the owner noted all missing contents. Photos were taken for documentation.
Tow truck spotted taking man’s vehicle ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a July 9 incident in which a man’s car was stolen while he was working at Aloft Hotel on North Point Parkway. The man arrived at work that morning and parked his car in the south end of the parking lot. Shortly before 3 p.m., a coworker said he thought he saw the man’s car being towed. The owner was unable to find the car. His finance company said he was up to date with his payments and had not taken it. He called surrounding law enforcement agencies, but none of them reported a repo in the area. The man’s attorney advised him to file a police report. The man kept his wallet with his Social Security card in his car. Footage of the incident showed a tow truck without any visible identifying marks take the car.

County clarifies executive session action By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County has revised wording of an agenda item that may have left some residents scratching their heads a couple of weeks ago when it first came up. At its July 18 meeting, the County Commission formally authorized a measure that sets an evaluation procedure to rate the county manager’s job performance. The process will include input from a number of key government and non-government sources. Last Thursday’s action, approved with no discussion, follows two previous votes on the same topic. However, neither of those earlier votes — one June 25 and another July 11 — included an explanation of what it was commission-
ers were voting on. Rather, the item up for vote read: “Board authorization to implement the action discussed at the June 20, 2019 Executive Session.” Under Georgia’s Open Meetings Law, governing boards may only discuss a handful of topics behind closed doors. These topics include the acquisition, sale or lease of property; matters pertaining to personnel; and attorney-client consultation on legal matters. A decision reached in closed session is not official until it is voted on in open session. By not disclosing details of the topic when it was formally adopted in open session, the board left residents to wonder what it was that had just been approved, said Richard T. Griffiths, president of the Georgia First Amendment Foundation.
“There is no excuse for county commissioners to come out of a closed session, an executive session, and then vote to implement something that they don’t describe to the public, as to what it is they’re implementing,” Griffiths said. He called such a vote invalid. “They may have voted in the open, nobody knew what the heck they were voting on, so that does not meet the requirements of the law,” he said. The latest vote added more of an explanation. County Attorney Ken Jarrard said the board’s first vote on June 25 was to authorize the informal direction given during a June 20 closed session. The action, he said, was undertaken at his urging to ensure the county adhered to “rigorous limitations on actions that can be taken by a governing authority in a
closed meeting.” That direction, still undefined publically, was formally approved again on July 11. Jarrard said the action ratified was interim guidance and was approved in open session in abundance of caution and pursuant to his belief in the significant limitations on closed session action. The third approval July 18, which spelled out the specifics, was placed on the consent agenda and approved without discussion. “Forsyth County has been and remains committed to strict adherence with both the spirit and letter of the Open Meetings Act,” Jarrard said. “If there is a concern with how this matter has been handled, that concern begins and ends with me.”
County grants bridge and guardrail change orders By CONNER EVANS newsroom@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth Board of Commissioners approved change orders totaling $164,490.25 at their July 18 meeting. The first part of the change orders was for improvements to guardrails for the Pilgrim Mill Circle project. The guardrails will have a powder coated treatment, giving them a ruddy, brownish color as opposed to the standard, gray metal look. This improvement was requested by citizens to Commissioner Molly Cooper before the July 9 work session. Those in Pilgrim Mill Circle subdivisions have had to deal with a lot of construction near their entrance recently, and making left turns out of Pilgrim Mill

Forsyth County is in the midst of major improvements on Pilgrim Mill Road and Pilgrim Mill Circle, including a bridge reconstruction. Circle has been difficult. “They have begged for a traffic light,” Cooper said. “It’s just not going to happen.” This small guardrail improvement was a way to provide and make good with those community members, she said, because a traffic light won’t be possible for them. The powder coating should last 10 to 20 years, Forsyth officials said. There could be slight complications when sections of the guardrail have to be replaced in the future. If a segment were hit by a car and had to be replaced, there would need to be a stockpile of powder coated guardrails to
fill in until a newly coated piece could be installed, Director of Engineering John Cunard said. Otherwise, a standard guardrail would fill in, and it wouldn’t match the rest of the section, he said. Commissioner Todd Levent asked whether this type of guardrail had been installed anywhere else in the county. He said that if they added it for this community, the board may later have to pay to make this improvement for large portions of the county. The other change orders are for the bridge that is a part of the Pilgrim Mill Road project. This was originally a bridge
widening, but is now a bridge reconstruction, Commissioner Laura Semanson said. The adjustment added to the original cost, and improvements include added street lights, a chiseled stone wall feature and a fence. At one point there was a proposal to have “pimped out” gateways for McFarland, Semanson said, but instead the board is focusing on enhancing the interchanges that they have now. The gateway will also have branding with its name featured, similar to the Holly Springs bridge. Both change orders passed by a vote of 4-0 with Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills absent.

The restaurant’s food truck was one of three featured in the recent episode of the popular show that focuses on finding the most delicious “meals on wheels.” Now that Happy Belly has experienced some widely-seen exposure, owner Dawn Hall hopes that the viewers noticed the restaurant’s “position on healthy items, and how much thought and preparation goes into making each of those menu items.” “We are always happy to have opportunities to work with companies like the Food Network,” she said. “It helps our industry and increases awareness that food trucks are more than just a ‘fast food’ pit stop. and saw the restaurant and their many food trucks, the process began. The 14-hour film shoot began in May during the Alpharetta Food Truck Alley event and ended later at the restaurant’s location in Vickery Village. The appearance allowed Hall to discuss the secrets behind their cuisine and the stories behind the business. After experiencing a “positive and congratulatory” reception from viewers and customers since the episode aired, the local eatery is seeing a noticeable increase in clientele. “Our customer base has been very
loyal and we would not be here without their feedback and repeat business,” Hall said. “We’ve been blessed to survive many ups and downs in an industry where it’s difficult to sustain long-term growth.” Happy Belly Kitchen is at 5863 South Vickery St., while their food trucks are seen at numerous outdoor community events throughout Atlanta. Rock for Rescue benefit concert kicks off August 17 By ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. – The Cumming Fairgrounds is continuing its popular summer concert series with Rock for Rescue presented by 37 Main. The event will be a benefit concert with all proceeds going to the Forsyth County Humane Society. The rock show will feature two of Atlanta’s biggest local acts: Electric Avenue, the MTV ’80s experience; and Departure, the Journey tribute band. “Rock for Rescue was born out of a love for animals,” said Joe White, 37 Main owner and entertainment director. “We wanted to create a yearly event for something that is so close to our hearts and supports a great cause so the Forsyth County Humane Society was a no-brainer. We’re very excited for the opportunity to mix
great music with a great cause.” People of all ages are welcome to enjoy a day of family-friendly rock classics. The Humane Society is also planning to hold open pet adoptions at the show. Local restaurateur leads fight for pancreatic cancer research By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Maria Fundora is a firm believer that even a small group can impact the lives of their neighbors and those beyond their backyards. So when her mother died suddenly of pancreatic cancer, Fundora became a leading voice in the fight against the disease. Her continued efforts have helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for research, and over the coming weeks, she hopes to raise $500,000. Fundora’s campaign begins July 28 with the Customer Appreciation Day at Casa Nuova Italian Restaurant in Alpharetta. Fundora opened the restaurant with her husband, Antonio, in 1998. Each year the restaurant holds a free event with a buffet, live music and games to thank customers and raise awareness for Fundora’s organization, Purple Pansies. Fundora founded the nonprofit to battle pancreatic cancer after her mother died from the disease in 2007. “It was very fast,” Fundora said. “She was gone within three months, and it really changed the dynamic of my family.” Affectionally called “Mama” by Casa Nuova patrons, Iluminada Milian was known for her delicious soups and generous spirit. “She was such an amazing woman,” Fundora said. “Growing up, we would travel, and she would always bring candy or medicine or other things to a local church or organization. When she passed away so suddenly, I had to change my life and do something for my mom. I founded Purple Pansies to be able to heal, and the way I grieved was in helping others.” Purple Pansies is exemplary of Fundora’s belief that a small, united group can make a significant impact. The organization raised $250,000 in 2018 and has set out to double that amount this year through the Purple Pansies’ annual gala. The event begins at 5 p.m. on Sept. 29 at Freemanville Estate, 15655 Freemanville Road in Milton. The space was donated for the event by the Littrell family, including Brian Littrell of Backstreet Boys fame. The gala includes a cocktail hour, six-course dinner with five wine pairings prepared by chef Antonio Fundora, entertainment, and a silent and live auction. Three pancreatic cancer survivors will serve as honorary chairs for the event. Funds raised through the Casa Nuova Customer Appreciation Day and the Purple Pansies Gala will benefit a large-

scale clinical trial for pancreatic cancer. Atlanta was chosen as one of seven cities for the Translational Genomics Research Institute’s “final assault” trial. “In 2018, we raised $250,000, and the majority of that money stayed in Georgia,” Fundora said. “So, our own citizens are able to benefit from this trail.” Fundora said donations are crucial. While pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all cancers, it receives only a 2 percent of federal cancer research dollars, Fundora said. “I’m fighting for a cause that I think needs a lot of attention,” she said. “We want to bring awareness to how much pancreatic cancer research is needed, even for early detection, like a mammogram for breast cancer. If you are symptomatic of pancreatic cancer, you are in stage 4. It doesn’t matter if my name or the organization’s name is [behind] awareness or funds. OPINION Fatherhood: Tips from a man who has no idea what he is doing
Part 2: How to support your pregnant partner It’s time to dive into some more tips and tricks to prepare you for fatherhood. If you missed my first installment, “So, you’re going to be a dad,” I am sharing all the fatherhood experience and expertise JOE PARKER I have gained in my Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com extensive background as a father, which now extends to a full month’s time. Now we continue on the second part of the journey. You know baby is coming, and you’ve taken those initial steps of preparation (Ha! You think you have, anyway), so now comes the time to learn how to be supportive and present for your partner. After all, she is now in the throes of the most physically and mentally taxing task the human body can face. If I may compare your role to your partner’s role in creating a child using the analogy of building a home, you, as a father, have installed a door hinge. Your partner has cleared the land, poured the foundation, built the frame, run electricity and plumbing, installed drywall, flooring and trim, shingled the roof, constructed the porch, painted the walls, hooked up appliances, installed every door, window and cabinet and completed all the landscaping. So, perhaps the soundest advice I can give is do not, under any circumstance, tell your pregnant partner that you are “tired.” Unless you like the taste of arsenic in your morning coffee, that is. Your partner will also face morning sickness, heartburn, a constant need to urinate, afternoon sickness, bloating, cramping, swelling, night sickness, food aversion, constipation, midday sickness, gassiness, late evening sickness, middleof-the-night sickness and just-afterdawn sickness. And that’s just in the first trimester. There is not much you can do as a father to help alleviate these issues, but it is important you be present and help where you can. Unless your partner tells you in a loving way to “[expletive] off,” even when you think you are being helpful. In that case, it’s important you follow her command for the sake of both of you. As first-time parents, you may also expect some pregnancy stereotypes to occur. For instance, your partner could develop strange food cravings, such as sar-

Even if it is not a strange combination, there will likely be some foodstuff that your pregnant partner craves. So, if your wife is longing for a radish at 3 a.m., go out and get her one. Otherwise, she will be imagining what you would look like without a head. Another cliché, one that has been generally disproven, is that a pregnant mother needs to “eat for two.” However, it is absolutely true that, during pregnancy, the father will “drink for three.” It is often said that pregnant women will become irrationally emotional as their human body grows another. Of course this is not the case for all women, but if you suspect your partner is being unreasonable, keep that damn thought to yourself. Speaking of thoughts, your wife’s body is under unbelievable stress, taking away vital resources that would normally be used for her normal brain function. This is often described as “pregnancy brain.” You can lend a hand by intervening when this affliction has become apparent, such as her bathing the dog in mayonnaise because she mistook it for soap. Which, frankly, is not such a farfetched example. Her body will also undergo major changes, and not just the inundation of hemorrhoids. Some say pregnant women “glow,” and during the course of her pregnancy an already stunning woman will become even more beautiful as her body changes and prepares for birth. It is important that you remind her of just how fantastic she looks, because with all the radical changes to her own figure, she will likely feel as if she has all the beauty of a giant hemorrhoid. So dad, you know baby is on the way and you are doing what you can to support the mother, but there is much left to be done. Kilgore is a 2019 graduate of South Forsyth High School and was among a group of five graduating seniors chosen from among the applicants. “These young men and women earned their awards through their scholarship, school activities and community involvement,” Post Commander Pete Esker said. McKesson opens local headquarters in Roswell By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — McKesson Corporation has moved its Atlanta hub from Alpharetta to Roswell. The company — a global leader in healthcare supply chain management solutions, retail pharmacy and healthcare information technology — celebrated the opening of the new office July 17 at the Stonebridge I building on 1110 Sanctuary Parkway. Roswell beat out competition from Columbus, Ohio; Austin, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona, to land the office. Roswell rose to the top of the list for several factors, including location and available space.
“Ultimately, it’s because we have a great incentive package here in the state of Georgia, and Roswell has the quality of life,” said Steve Stroud, executive director of Roswell’s economic development arm Roswell Inc. Roswell Mayor Lori Henry said the city is excited to work with McKesson once again. “Years ago, they were in Roswell,” she said. “They’ve gone full circle and are back home again. We’re really excited that they’ve chosen Roswell. Let’s talk aging and bladder control While it is normal to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed discussing bladder issues such as incontinence, it is important to understand just how common these problems are for aging women. ‘Just rub some black salve on it and call me in the morning’ (And other phrases you won’t hear your dermatologist tell you) By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Frequently, I field questions from patients about alternative therapies for treating the skin and specifically skin cancer. One of the most Dr. Taylor interesting treatments available is called “Black Salve” – interesting because it is not merely a placebo, but rather does have real effects. Black salve is also interesting because its history has intersected with that of allopathic medicine in ways that are important to medicine’s most advanced skin cancer treatments. Black salve has been used for decades as a way to treat growths including warts, moles and even skin cancer (but dermatologists do not recommend using it for this purpose). Black salve is a mixture of zinc chloride and Sanguinaria canadensis (aka Bloodroot), and sometimes Larrea tridentata (aka creosote bush or chaparral). But what are these three ingredients? Zinc chloride is an escharotic and tissue fixative. An eschar is a piece of dead tissue that will eventually turn black and slough off the skin. When applied to the skin, zinc chloride causes cell death and chemically fixes tissue into a relatively hard dead mass or plaque -- an “eschar.” If applied to a skin cancer, zinc chloride may kill the cancer, but the zinc chloride may also damage surrounding tissue. Zinc chloride is non-specific, damaging both unhealthy and healthy tissue that it contacts. Numerous case reports exist in the medical literature of people applying zinc chloride paste only to have a cancer come back worse or metastasize. Application of this paste has also been reported as causing severe scarring and deformity. Bloodroot is a flowering plant indigenous to eastern North America. Bloodroot gets its name from a red sap that can be harvested from the roots to dye baskets or cloth. Bloodroot also produces an ammonium-based chemical that kills animal cells and that is an escharotic, similar to zinc chloride. Creosote or chaparral is a desert plant whose extracts include certain compounds touted as having antioxidant properties. Chaparral is listed in the FDA’s poisonous plant database where its entry states that it has caused liver injury and even fulminant hepatic failure requiring a liver transplant. An interesting intersection of black salve with allopathic medicine is that Dr. Frederick Mohs used a compound combining zinc chloride, antimony trisulfide
and bloodroot as a “chemopaste” that was instrumental in helping him to develop “Mohs surgery” – the skin cancer treatment that bears his name and is now the most effective, precise and advanced method for treating skin cancer. Developed in the 1930s, Mohs’ chemopaste allowed him to harden and fix a skin cancer and a small area of surrounding skin. He then would remove that area, slice it thinly and examine it under the microscope to make sure that the margins were clear of tumor. When cancer was still present at an edge, he would remove more skin from the patient and again examine it under the microscope until all the cancer had been removed. The chemopaste was often applied the night before surgery, was very painful and caused substantial damage to surrounding tissue. Mohs’ method of using chemopaste and examining tissue under the microscope was imperfect, but it was certainly better than alternative methods of skin cancer removal available at the time. By the late 1970s, machines that could freeze tissue and allow it to be cut with precision and without the use of this chemopaste became available, making the chemopaste obsolete. Modern Mohs surgery involves numbing a skin cancer and the surrounding skin with lidocaine, removing the visible tumor and a small margin, checking the edges for tumor and repeating this process until all microscopically visible cancer has been removed. Modern Mohs surgery results in a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers, and suturing and repair techniques are so refined that deformity is extremely rare and in most cases minimal scarring occurs. Catch a cat! Fishing is a many-spendored thing. Sometimes, it’s fancy with high-tech rods and waders made of space-age fabric. But sometimes (especially in the heat of summer), fishing is just relaxed and even a little lazy. That’s catfish fishing! I’ve always enjoyed fishing for catfish. Maybe that’s because it’s such a great antidote to all the other high-stress things in life. Simple, that’s what it is. All you need is a spinning rod and some bait. Cast your offering out there, and then settle down in the shade by the water, stretched out in a folding chair or maybe on a blanket in the grass. It doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that. Then just wait. Maybe you’ll get a bite and reel in a catfish. Or maybe you won’t, but that’s okay, too, because then you don’t have to work hardly at all. Either way, it’s a perfect prescription for enjoying a lazy summer afternoon. One great thing about fishing for catfish is that they’re easy to find and catch, even for inexperienced anglers. “Georgia provides plenty of opportunities for folks to toss out a line for catfish,” says Matt Thomas, WRD Fisheries Management Chief. “Catching catfish requires relatively simple gear and is a great way to introduce someone new to

fishing, especially kids.” Georgia’s best-known catfish is probably the channel cat, North America’s most widespread catfish. Most run from 1 to 4 pounds, but larger ones (such as the world record, a 58-pound monster landed in South Carolina) are always a possibility. Good baits include nightcrawlers or other worms, chicken livers, and (the favorite of many) a piece of a hotdog. As far as gear goes, a spinning rod fitted with 6- to 14-lb. test line and a size 2 or 4 hook will get you going. Use a bobber to tell you when a fish takes your bait. Of course, you can also just fish your bait on the bottom. Remember that catfish favor deeper areas during the day. Try an area for a half hour or so, and if you don’t have any luck, move to a different area and try again. Early and late, cats will move into shallower water, so adjust your tactics depending on when you’re fishing. When handling a catfish, remember that they’ve got sharp spines. You’ll find them in both the Chattahoochee and the Chestatee arms of the lake. Larger flathead catfish are also possible. Check out your local neighborhood or subdivision ponds too. surprised at what you find on the end of your line. If you are up for some catch-and-release fishing, check out the family fishing pond at the Buford Trout Hatchery off Ga. 20. Loaner rods may be available, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own. And be sure to leave time to check out the hatchery trout too. You can’t fish for those trout, but you just might be able to feed them! Of course, one of the greatest things about catfish may be the inevitable “catfish fry” which often follows a successful day of fishing. Everyone has a favorite recipe, but most go something like this: After cleaning the catfish, and perhaps fileting it, soak the fish in buttermilk or (for a little extra zing) in Texas Pete’s Hot Sauce for a few minutes. Then roll the filets in a mixture of cornmeal, salt, pepper, onion powder and maybe a little garlic powder. Shake off the excess and fry ’em at about 360 degrees for three or four minutes until golden brown. But leave room for some peach ice cream for dessert. I’m making myself hungry just thinking about it!
