The man said he had done some landscape work for the male client back in May. When the work was finished, he said the client offered to pay him an additional $100 for some extra work, but he refused the offer and did not take the money.

CUMMING, Ga. — A woman reported to authorities that her vehicle had been stolen from her driveway on Rilandite Cove June 25.

The vehicle, a black 2014 Lexus GS350, had been left unlocked with the keys in the center console. Also left in the vehicle was a wallet containing bank cards and $15 in cash.

In Touch Credit Union stated that there was a possible lien on the vehicle for repossession, but the victim confirmed the vehicle had been paid off for over a year.

The vehicle was last seen on Shallowford Road in Chamblee later that day.

outside his residence on Bronson Way. The owner said he noticed that the front passenger window had been shattered before calling the sheriff’s office. The 2017 Toyota Camry had been locked and parked in the driveway.

Deputies noticed that the contents of the glove box were removed and scattered onto the floor. The owner reported that $400-$500 in cash had been stolen.

Woman reports theft from backyard building CUMMING, Ga. — A woman reported stolen tools from the shed behind her home on Bennett Road June 22. The woman said she first noticed the back gate open, then found that the shed door was also left open and the tools were missing. The burglary did not appear forced.

The stolen items include two cordless drills, two 18-volt batteries, a battery charger, a cordless skill saw, a corded skill saw, and a steel chainsaw, all with a combined value of $1,150. No serial or model numbers were provided for the items.

The woman said she had checked with her nephew who does lawn work, but he said he hadn’t borrowed the items. Neighbors said they hadn’t seen anything suspicious on the property.

He then began receiving texts from a different number demanding the $100. The author refused to stop texting until he received the money, adding that he knew his location.

Deputies tried calling both numbers but were unable to reach anyone. The victim was advised to block the new number.

been stolen from a house she was renovating on Compass Point Crossing.

The woman had been hired by a family to renovate the house while they were in India. The family had provided her access and permission to move the car into the garage as needed while she worked.

She had moved the vehicle once and placed it back in the garage June 17.

The next day, the car was gone.

Multiple contractors had been in and out of the house during that time period.

A doorbell camera captured two cases of people entering the house.

The videos were given to police to aid in the investigation.

Alleged shoplifters sought in theft from beauty store ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a June 19 incident in which two women are suspected of stealing $600 worth of perfume from the Sephora at North Point Mall.

Video footage showed the two women enter the store shortly before 5 p.m., put seven bottles of perfume in their bags and leave without paying.

The bottles were valued at between $65-$120 each.

The two women were seen leaving in a white SUV.

Wanted man arrested during traffic stop ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man June 16 after he was pulled over for speeding and an officer recognized him as a wanted man.

Police pulled the man over on Ga. 400 northbound near Encore Parkway after officers clocked him traveling at 90 mph in a 65-mph zone.

While talking to the man, police were alerted that he had two warrants for his arrest. One warrant was from DeKalb County for simple assault and the second from Clayton County for trespassing.

The man, later identified as 28-yearold Solomon Rodgers of Decatur, was arrested without incident for speeding and on two warrants.

Forsyth explores enforcement of short-term rental code New service sheds light on operations in county

Ninety-seven percent of all the listings are between one and seven nights. Only 1 percent are greater than 30 nights.

BY PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Two months after banning short-term rentals in residential areas, Forsyth County commissioners are exploring ways to enforce the rules.

They think they’ve found one tool that will help, and it has left them a little spellbound.

At a June 25 commission work session, Chief Information Officer Brandon Kenney presented commissioners with an array of data on the current status of the short-term rental market in Forsyth County. The material was compiled by contracting firm Host Compliance.

Up till now, the county has relied on a mix of public records, official complaints and a host of other assorted accounts to track short-term rentals.

Using a proprietary method of gathering data, including expansive web listings, Kenney said Host Compliance has taken much of the guesswork out of the equation.

The company’s data shows Forsyth County has some 197 short term rental units in operation, eight of them added last month.

Of all the listings, 75 percent have been identified with a street address.

“That’s extremely important because what this means is the company, through all of their means, has identified [and] verified the information used in multiple sources,” Kenney said.

The software includes a map of the county with individual points representing a short-term rental unit.

Click on the point, and an information box appears with details of location and ownership. It also includes a

timeline of activity, including advertisements on certain sites and whether the property is active. It provides pricing information, minimum stay, maximum sleeping capacity, bedrooms, number of bathrooms and the number of reviews. It breaks down whether the rental consists of the entire home or a part of a home, like a studio over a garage.

Ninety-seven percent of all the listings are between one and seven nights.

Only 1 percent are greater than 30 nights.

The data shows there are 257 listings on multiple sites for short-term rentals for the 197 individual units.

“We have the ability to pull all this information back into our systems,” Kenney said. “Our goal here is to start to integrate our data so we can start to

make good decisions.”

Before they launched into discussion over the data, County Attorney Ken Jarrard reminded commissioners that the county is facing two legal battles over the new ordinance filed on behalf of the rental operators.

Commissioners opened the forum suggesting how the data might be used, including whether the properties have homestead exemptions.

“We can’t get involved in their personal arrangements, but I would imagine that some of these properties are homesteaded, then they may have some questions to answer for their insurers and their mortgage companies,” Commission Chairman Laura Semanson said.

All commissioners seemed generally in favor that those properties in violation

of the new ordinance should be notified in writing with an explanation that enforcement is set to begin Jan. 1, 2020.

But there was some disagreement over what would happen next.

Commissioner Todd Levent said sending out 197 letters will almost certainly lead to a flood of possibly 197 phone calls to staff in the Community Development Department. He said he wonders whether staff is equipped to handle that and how they are to respond to residents who oppose the ordinance.

“When staff gets into this, they’ll be able to manage their workload,” Semanson said. “If they can’t, they’ll come to us.”

Levent asked if it was acceptable for staff to direct angry callers to contact their commissioner, “because it’s going to happen,” he said.

No one objected to that approach.

The two-year battle over regulating short-term rentals ended April 18 when the commission voted 3-2 to change its Unified Development Code banning the operations in residentially zoned areas throughout the county. The code does provide for operations lying within areas zoned for agriculture or agricultureresidential, lots generally much larger than those in residential areas. Still, even these operations must go through a zoning process to receive a conditional use permit.

Sheriff’s Office releases footage of newborn found in woods

BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office released portions of the video footage taken from a deputy’s body camera June 6 when an abandoned newborn baby girl was found lying in a wooded area inside of a plastic bag on the side of Daves Creek Road.

The video shows rescuers pulling the baby out of the bag and wrapping her in a blanket. As of June 25 when the video was released on the department’s

Facebook page, authorities are still trying to determine the identity and parentage of the child referred to as Baby India.

“We are happy to report that Baby India is thriving and is in the care of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services,” the Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page. “We release this footage in hopes to receive credible information on the identity of Baby India and to show how important it is to find closure in this case.”

The department warns that the

video is graphic. The footage also shows officers comforting the child and speaking to her in calming tones with one saying, “Look how precious you are,” and another apologizing, “I’m so sorry.”

The post then discusses Georgia’s Safe Haven law that allows a mother to leave her baby, up to 30 days old, with an employee of any medical facility including any hospital, infirmary, health center, or birthing center in the state without prosecution. This also includes fire and police stations.

Georgia DFACS officials have reported hundreds of offers for adoption, coming from as far away as Canada.

Thousands of dollars have poured in to support the infant.

Grace Fellowship to hold Sandwiches for Students

By ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — Grace Fellowship of South Forsyth will hold their annual Sandwiches for Students event July 11 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The church is working with the Smart Lunch Smart Kid program for their seventh summer to deliver lunches for children in need.

Volunteers are needed to assemble the lunches and decorate the delivered bags.

The lunches are intended to replace the subsidized lunches provided while school is in session.

“The idea came from one of the moms of one of our students. We have been participating for approximately seven summers by making the lunches,” said Patrick Dirrim, one of the church’s student pastors. “Since we have been blessed by God with so much ranging from food to family to life in Christ,

we have a desire to extend God’s kindness to others around us.”

Smart Lunch Smart Kid has been working with local churches and outreach organizations each year to assemble and deliver the meals to the kids. Each lunch contains a sandwich, fruit, a sweet or salty snack, and water. The church is hoping to assemble 350 lunches during the event. Items needed include bread, cheese, fruit cups, cookies, sandwich bags, stickers, and Bible verses inserted into the bags.

“As long as there is a need and the Smart Lunch Smart Kid program is allowed to accept and deliver lunches for needy kids, we will continue to partner with them each summer,” Dirrim said.

Cumming honors fallen officers with restored police car

By CONNER EVANS newsroom@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — Cumming Mayor Troy Brumbalow has been restoring old cars for years, but none more important to his community than the 1969 Chevrolet Impala, which will stand as the centerpiece of the future City Center fallen officer memorial.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Deputy James William Cantrell and Reserve Deputy Larry Mulkey responded to a burglary call January 10, 1972. At a traffic stop, the assailants abducted the two officers, putting them in the trunk of the Impala and shot into the car.

Before approaching the vehicle, one of the deputies wrote down the suspects’ license plate number, and that piece of evidence helped lead to their eventual arrest and conviction, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. On both officers’ memorial pages online, there are messages from 2005-2019 thanking them for their service.

Cantrell and Mulkey were the last Forsyth police officers to die in the line of duty, and recently the city has worked to honor the memory of fallen officers.

Brumbalow said he has thought about restoring the car for some time.

“My grandad patrolled in that same car back during that period,” he said.

“The car was at a local tow yard where it had been ever since the night that it happened. They took the car off the road forever after that night.”

That original would have cost too

much to fully restore, he said, so the city purchased a replica. Brumbalow acquired his pride for police from his grandad, and he learned a craft for repairing cars from his father.

“Growing up my dad was a police officer, so we didn’t have a lot of money,” he said. “When his car would break down, he had to fix it. He wasn’t restoring cars, just keeping them running.”

Brumbalow got used to handing his father wrenches and learning the mechanics

of older cars. He also saw Burt Reynolds in “Smokey and the Bandit” at the perfect age. At age 7, he watched Reynolds and even got to ride in a replica Bandit TransAm, which inspired a lifelong goal to own one of those cars, himself.

When Brumbalow restores cars he often disassembles them down to their frame. His favorites are Mopar cars — Dodge and Plymouth models. He’s had a car featured briefly in “Fast 5” and even got to meet the late “Fast and Furious” franchise star, Paul Walker.

His collection includes a 1962 Dodge Panel, a 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner and a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda, the one featured in “Fast Five.”

But restoring a replica of the 1969 Impala was a community effort.

Gary and Matthew Johnson of Johnson Body Shop did all the paint work, Brumbalow said. EC Signs donated the stickers and badge decals. Greg Pirkle of Greg Pirkle’s Upholstery worked on some of the interior.

Lanier Tire and Wheel donated the wheels and tires. FinishMaster donated the paint. Northside Forsyth Hospital, Civil Engineering Consultants and Andean Chevrolet all made financial contributions.

Restoration: North Forsyth senior wins bag design contest Continued from Page 6 At Cumming’s Fourth of July Parade, Brumbalow and his wife, Jodie Bridges Brumbalow, will lead in his own restored Bandit Trans-Am that he purchased a few years ago, followed by Forsyth County Sheriff Ron H. Freeman in the Impala.

The mayor said he tried to arrange for former Sheriff Donald Pirkle, the sheriff back in 1972, to pilot the car, but he is unable to attend. The theme of the parade and the new City Center is “Main Street America from a simpler time,” Brumbalow said.

The center will be on Canton Highway near Forsyth Central High School.

It will have a memorial for fallen officers and firefighters, a 1950s theme for restaurants and shops in the hub and a large green space for the community.

The firefighter memorial will feature the last operating firetruck from when the city still had its own fire department and will memorialize all those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The city’s fire department was always a volunteer operation, Brumbalow said.

And many of those volunteers were previous mayors and city council members.

City Center is expected to break ground before the end of this year and reach completion by the end of Brumbalow’s term in 2021.

ROSWELL, Ga. — COUNTRY Financial and the Roswell Farmers and Artisans Market have announced the winners of the bag design contest.

The 2019 reusable bag designed

by North Forsyth High School senior Lauren Varga was unveiled at the market behind Roswell City Hall.

Varga will receive a $2,000 scholarship from COUNTRY Financial, and her artwork will be printed on 1,500 canvas bags to be handed out at the market.

The theme for this year was “Growing a Green Future.” To be eligible, artists had to use the theme and include the phrase “2019 Roswell Farmers and Artisans Market” in their design.

The runners-up for the bag design contest are Emily Sellers a junior at Alpharetta High School, (first runner-up), and Marie Latif a freshman at Cambridge High School (second runner-up).

Sellers will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and Latif will receive $500 from COUNTRY Financial, which has been a national sponsor for the contest for 13 years. This is its first sponsorship of the Roswell event.

It’s been a little over two weeks now that I should be dead.

Returning home late one night from Conyers on I-20, I’d just pulled into the left of two exit lanes feeding onto I-285. pat Fox To my right was my Editor pat@appenmediagroup.com wife. To her right was an 18-wheeler.

As we rounded the curve, probably traveling at around 50 mph, the truck suddenly crossed into my lane. I had already noticed the lane to my left was packed with speeding vehicles, so all I could do was brake and creep as far to the left as I dared. Things happened too quickly for me to reason that getting rear-ended by a speeding car would have probably been better than getting mashed underneath a semi.

Anyway, somehow, miraculously, the front edge of the trailer swept past within inches.

Whew!

Then, something terrifying happened.

I saw the back end of the trailer coming alongside, tilting onto its left bank of wheels and swerving even farther into our lane.

I had already calculated how close we came to being smashed by the front end.

This time, no need to calculate. It was a certainty.

All we could do is sit and watch the giant wheels churning closer.

Somehow, nothing happened. Not a scratch.

Keep in mind, this was not a close

call — not from my perspective. You can’t drive around Atlanta and not experience a close call. They are almost routine. They happen. You tell your friends about it, then forget it.

This was different.

All visual signs indicated I was witnessing the end.

This was not a close call. This was inevitability carried out to the 20th decimal point.

I won’t go into the ethereal variables for our escape — a guardian angel, freak wind shear, interdimensional shift.

Maybe it was destiny, issuing a ruling that I should write a column about the experience.

And, maybe a reader will be moved by it – moved enough to drive a little more carefully, a little less aggressively. You see, I was completely within my right to be in my lane merging onto I-285. Why should I yield way to a semi which was going to run out of pavement soon? Well, I found out why.

Maybe an official with the Georgia Department of Transportation or the Federal Highway Safety Administration will read this column and consider action to eliminate two-lane merges that narrow to one lane on high-speed roadways.

Maybe.

Students shine at art exhibit

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Arts Center’s newest exhibit, High Honors, features the talents of high schoolers from across three counties.

The summer show was open to students from Fulton, Forsyth and Gwinnett Counties. The show includes 52 pieces from eight schools.

This is the first time the Johns Creek Arts Center has held a show specifically for teenage artists, and given its success the staff hopes to make it annual event.

“We’re all about fostering a love of art in young people, and this is a great way to do it,” Arts Center Executive Director Stuart Miller said.

The contest was open to all mediums, including photography, graphite, painting, digital, ceramics and other sculpture.

Curator Althea Foster said the show features high-quality work with a unique, teenage perspective.

“It’s very accomplished work,” Foster said. “It’s a testament to the quality of the art programs in the area and the support from the parents.”

Johns Creek High Schooler Matthew Oh took home the top prize, a $1,000

scholarship, for the oil painting “Viscous Layers.” Jimin Suh and Erin Lee, both from Johns Creek High School, received honorable mentions.

For young artists looking at colleges and considering career choices, it can be a huge boost to be featured in a show, win a scholarship or sell some of their work, Foster said.

“It’s a great way to inspire students who are considering art school and show them what they can achieve,” Foster said. “It really is inspiring to see young people who are working hard to achieve their goals and to see what they’ll do next.”

Miller said the exhibit is also perfectly timed for younger students.

“With our summer show, we try to engage the campers who are here in the summer,” he said. “This is a great way to inspire them.”

In past years, the arts center has done shows with comic book art and children’s book illustrations, but featuring the work of teenagers engages young campers more directly, Miller said, by showing them what they can achieve in just a few years.

The High Honors exhibit will show at the Johns Creek Arts Center, at 6290 Abbotts Bridge Road Building 700, until Aug. 2.

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Milton-based Orkin & Associates has purchased Stonewood Village, a 106,485-squarefoot shopping center at 670 North Main Street in Alpharetta. Newmark Knight Frank announced the sale June 13.

“Stonewood Village presented a rare opportunity for investors to capitalize on a well-positioned shopping center that offers significant value enhancement from the empty big box and outparcel development,” said Mark Joines, senior managing director with Newmark Knight Frank. “It was no surprise that the buyer, with a focus on long-term ownership, jumped on the chance to own the property.”

Orkin & Associates, through its development partner, Devin Properties, develops retail, residential and mixeduse properties, and provides full-service management to in-house assets through Orkin Asset Management.

Built in 1986, Stonewood Village had been marketed as providing an ideal value-add opportunity with flexible space options for grocers and junior anchors.

It lies within one of Metro Atlanta’s fastest growing suburban corridors. More than 137,000 people work within a fivemile radius of Stonewood Village, with average household incomes in the area exceeding $146,000.

Key tenants at Stonewood Village include Dover Saddlery, Anytime Fitness, Queen of Hearts Antiques and Pure Spa. More than 32,000 square feet of space is currently available for lease, including a vacant big box.

In a statement issued following the sale, Orkin said Stonewood Village presents a great opportunity for the company, and it looks forward to filling it with businesses the community will enjoy.

The transaction reflects continued investor demand for value-add shopping centers located in high-growth suburban areas and feature a healthy mix of service and necessity-based retailers, making them less vulnerable to e-commerce.

Joines said the north Atlanta market is ripe for retail, especially as a component within mixed-use development.

“Retail in the area is strong,” he said.

“There has not been the overdevelopment over the last 10 years that we saw leading up to the recession.”

Joines conceded there have been instances of retail headwinds.

“We’ve lost a number of big-box retailers out there, your Sports Authority, some of your office suppliers like Office Depot and Office Max, and of course Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us,” he said.

“But those have been back-filled pretty easily, especially in areas like Roswell, Alpharetta and Johns Creek, where the general outlook is strong; there’s a lot of growth.”

A lot of the development going on now, Joines said, is densification in older, more mature areas, like Alpharetta City Center, which includes office, retail and residential.

In other areas, new retail development is taking on a different look.

“Some of that backfill includes some new-age, non-traditional retailers, such as fitness clubs, discount-oriented tenants like Big Lots and Goodwill,” he said.

Alpharetta’s key economic indicators continue to trend upward. The city’s population has grown by approximately 15 percent over the last eight years, with nearly two-thirds of residents holding a bachelor’s degree. More than 5,000 companies are located within the city limits.

Inventories define line between buyers’ and sellers’ market A couple weeks ago I talked about the housing market being a little Jekyll and Hyde, with lower-priced houses being in a sellers’ market and higherpriced houses being more in a buyers’ Geoff smith market. That article Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com was more me going off articles I’ve been reading and gut-feelings. This one is about hard data.

I turned to my friend Mitchell Palm with Smart Real Estate Data. Their company is based out of Atlanta and is one of the best resources for crunching local numbers, to the point of sometimes dialing those numbers down to specific neighborhoods. I asked him about my theory, and he didn’t waste two seconds before sending me data and graphs proving out that he had known for a while what I was just discovering.

Palm uses months of inventory to determine whether a market is a buyers’ market or a sellers’ market. Months of inventory is the estimated number of months it would take to sell all of the houses currently listed in a given market. He said six months of inventory is what experts consider a healthy market, and that is what he says is the dividing line between the two markets.

“We know that 81 percent of listing are under 6 months, or 81 percent of the homes for sale are considered to be in a sellers’ market,” he said. “Once you

reach beyond the $600,00 price-range the (inventory) levels rise exponentially.”

The healthy market seems to be in the $600,000 to $800,000 price-range for the metro area. In that range, there is about seven months of inventory.

But you start to go over that and those houses are sitting much longer. Houses listed over $1 million are sitting for almost a year, and those over $1.5 million are sitting for over a year and a half.

On the flip side, the lower you go in price, the number of months on the market shrinks rapidly. Anything under $300,000 has two months of inventory, and two months of inventory is considered very unhealthy. In that price-range, buyers are fighting for the same houses, which is driving prices up and exacerbating the problem.

There is a problem in Atlanta with what some call affordable housing. A significant percentage of the market wants to buy houses under $300,000.

But over the last eight years, land has been so expensive, that builders have not been able to afford to buy the land and build houses in that price range and still make a profit. So there hasn’t been a lot of inventory added to the market.

Now you have a lot of people fighting over the affordable market, and that is driving up prices on those homes, making them less affordable.

I live in Roswell and was eating at a restaurant. From the time we ordered our food to the time it arrived was 45 minutes.

The manager apologized and I asked him what the problem was. He said his turnover with chefs is so high because none

of them can afford to live in North Fulton and are having to drive an hour to get to work there. And it’s not worth it to them.

It’s really strange how these things play out in our day-to-day lives.

But inventory in those lower-priced markets is in trouble. If you are trying to buy a home priced from $100,000 to $200,000, there is only one month’s worth of supply. If two months is considered very unhealthy, one month is half of that.

Palm said closings were slightly down over the last year, and he said there were two reasons for this: “sky-rocketing housing prices and rising mortgage rates — both of which lead to lack of affordability,” he said.

That said, we’ve seen a dramatic decrease in rates over the last month shoving them back down just under 4 percent for a 30-year fixed mortgage, according to MortgageNewsDaily.

“The falling mortgage rates should be the saving grace for the busy summer buying season of 2019,” Palm said.

Doctors are nominated for consideration through a nationwide survey and a peer nomination process open to licensed physicians in Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry and Rockdale counties. Castle Connolly’s physician-led team of researchers then select the top doctors through a screening process that includes an evaluation of educational and experience.

Having worked with small business owners for over 40 years, I have seen both positive and negative ways in which they manage their employees. How are you managing dick jones your employees?

In many cases, small business owners feel they need to micromanage their employees because it is the only way to ensure that they are doing their jobs correctly. Micro-managing employees often includes telling your employees what to do, how to do it and when to do it. If you’ve been in the military, then this approach is well known. It’s called a military model, and it works really well in that environment.

Conversely, a military model in a small business most often is a “house of cards” for employees as it’s not a very fun environment to work in. A military model squashes creativity and an employee’s autonomy and is a complete impediment to high performing teams.

A few years ago, the baby boomer generation was surpassed by the millennial generation, which has a very low tolerance for this type of work environment. While micro-managing employees in the past may have worked, it’s not going to in the future.

Having the freedom to do your job and own your own performance is a much better environment to operate and grow your small business. If you’re a micro-managing small business owner, you’d better think twice about continuing this behavior.

Johns Creek Chorale invites singers to audition

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Johns Creek Chorale is looking for people with a song in their hearts to join their family of performers.

The Chorale is a group of adults from across the north Atlanta region that performs vocal concerts throughout the year. They also have a woman’s choir, Tapestry.

The group is holding auditions Saturday, July 13 and July 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at Johns Creek United Methodist Church. Auditions are open to anyone over the age of 17.

“They don’t have to be a professional singer,” Executive Director Linda Bergmann said. “Amateurs are welcome.

They just have to love to sing.”

The Johns Creek Chorale formed five years ago. Its mission, Bergmann said, is to inspire a lifelong love of singing.

Many of the members, including Bergmann, sang in school but pursued other interests in college or early adulthood.

“We want to keep people singing,” she said. “The group is so much fun to be a part of and there is so much tal-

The audition will consist of a vocal range check, tonal memory check and sight reading a short piece chosen by Artistic Director Nathan Frank.

Bergmann encouraged interested singers to not be intimidated by the audition process.

The Chorale is looking for around 70 members.

Chorale members are asked to pay a $100 fee and agree to make all of the performances and 90 percent of rehearsals. Rehearsals are most Tuesday nights

from late August to late April beginning at 7 p.m.

Auditions, rehearsals and most performances will be at Johns Creek United Methodist Church, at 11180 Medlock Bridge Road. Auditions will be in the Gathering Room located near the sanctuary.

Alpharetta set for new wave of public sculptures

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta will roll out a new set of sculptures for outdoor display this summer after the City Council signed off on eight on-loan pieces through its collaboration with Arts Alpharetta.

The pieces, all of varying sizes and shapes, will be displayed at different locations throughout the city and will replace the current loaned pieces at Brooke Street Park near City Hall.

“The exact locations have not been worked out for all of these pieces; we know right now we have five places the art is going to go,” said Parks and Recreation Department Director Morgan Rodgers. “There will be three new locations, somewhere around Brooke Street Park or along the Alpha Loop along Thompson Street, which has always called for art.”

The city has an agreement with Arts Alpharetta to continue the Outdoor Art on Loan Project whose intended purpose is to further goals and policies set forth in the city’s Comprehensive Plan and Downtown Master Plan and the Art in Public Places Guidelines & Polices.

Speaking at the June 17 City Council meeting, Rodgers said the eight new pieces were selected by Arts Alpharetta for ratification by the council. The pieces will be on display for two years.

Councilman Jason Binder said the city has to give variances for businesses to construct structures that size.

Mayor Jim Gilvin agreed, saying the piece may be too tall for the city’s taste.

“The color’s one thing, but to have that color 50 feet up in the air, that would be a bit much, I believe,” Gilvin said.

Arts Alpharetta has selected two alternate pieces that can be substituted if a suitable location that satisfies city leaders cannot be found.

In a related matter at the June 17 meeting, the council agreed to purchase one of the seven sculptures now on display at Brooke Street Park as part of the Miscellany Open Air exhibit.

The city performed an informal Facebook poll asking residents which of the current five pieces on display they liked best.

Rodgers said Laborer was the overwhelming winner. He said the department’s operating budget has enough money remaining to fund the $24,000 purchase price.
