Wrong-way vehicle crash kills 2 drivers on Ga. 400 FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Two men died in a fiery wrong-way crash along Ga. 400 early May 30. Deputies and firefighters responded to the crash scene between the Majors Road and Shiloh Road overpasses. Dispatchers began receiving reports just before 1:30 a.m. that a vehicle was speeding the wrong way northbound on the highway in excess of 100 mph.

The crash occurred before deputies were able to intercept the vehicle. One of the vehicles burst into flames, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Silas Brown, 35, of Atlanta, was driving an Alfa Romero SUV southbound in the highway’s northbound lanes when he struck a Lexus IS250 head-on, deputies said. Tarik Kindell, a 22-year-old Cumming man, was driving the Lexus sedan.

Brown was a stylist who appeared on the BET reality series “Ink Paper Scissors.”

Both men died at the scene, according to deputies. Ga. 400 remained closed for several hours. The investigation is on-going.

Driver cited for attack against elderly resident 319 N. Main Street, Alpharetta, GA 30009

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — An Alpharetta man was arrested for allegedly punching a 76-year-old man during a May 17 road rage clash on Oakmont Bend Drive.

Cedric Poindexter, 57, was charged with exploitation/intimidation of the disabled/elderly. Deputies said the elderly man was outside fixing his sprinkler system when a car sped past his home. The driver stopped and reversed when the homeowner yelled for him to slow down on the residential road, which had a 25 mph speed limit.

The homeowner approached the vehicle and continued yelling at the driver.

As he walked away, the suspect allegedly got out of the vehicle and punched the elderly man in the back causing him to fall, deputies reported. Investigators identified the driver as Poindexter. He was arrested along Matthew Meadow Court on May 25.

Cumming woman dies in camper trailer fire FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County fire marshals are investigating a deadly May 26 fire that burned down a trailer in the 2600 block of Hammond Drive and killed a Cumming woman.

Authorities from the Forsyth County Fire Department identified the victim as Gini Smith, 52.

Smith was inside the small travel trailer when it became fully engulfed in flames around 7:15 a.m. Firefighters responded within minutes to extinguish the camper. But the blaze had reached significant levels by the time crews arrived on scene, Fire Department spokesman Jason Shivers said.

Smith was trapped inside and couldn’t escape.

Shivers said Smith lived in the camper at the time, and it was right next door to other family members who resided on the same property. No one else was injured.

Now fire crews are investigating the cause of the fire.

New Greenway trails now open to public

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Nearly five miles of new trails along the popular Big Creek Greenway are now open to the public. Forsyth County officials cut the ribbon on two new segments of paths June 3, extending the overall length of the trail to about 15 miles within Forsyth County.

One of the new trail segments, west of Cumming, extends the Greenway from the intersection of Kelly Mill Road and Johnson Road to Ga. 20 for a total distance of 2.27 miles. The other new portion, a total of 2.5 miles, begins at the intersection of Ga. 20 and the Spot Road Connector and runs along the Connector, Doc Bramblett Road and Spot Road to the Sawnee Mountain Preserve north of Cumming.

The paths now open to the public are within Phase V of the Greenway, which has been on the county’s radar for well over a decade. The paths were funded by the county’s $100 million Parks, Recreation and Greenspace Bond and from special purpose local option sales tax revenues.

A future segment of the trail will connect all portions of the Greenway in Forsyth County. The county expects to complete an additional 1 mile of trails running parallel to Ga. 20 as a GDOT project

widens the roadway.

The complete length of Phase V is 5.7 miles from Kelly Mill Road to the Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitor Center on Spot Road.

The Greenway is a linear park featuring primarily 12-foot wide concrete paths/ boardwalks that begins in Roswell’s Big Creek Park and runs through Alpharetta.

The Greenway begins in Forsyth County at the intersection of Ronald Reagan Boulevard and McGinnis Ferry Road.

The trail runs north along Big Creek for about 9 miles before continuing north at Kelly Mill Road and along other roadways to Ga. 20.

The 2.5-mile stretch of Greenway that will connect portions in North Fulton to the Forsyth County border has been on the drawing board in Alpharetta for several years. The trail currently ends at Marconi Drive just north of Webb Bridge Road.

After years of delays, the extension is scheduled for completion later this year.

Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Director Jim Pryor previously told the Herald that the connection to Fulton County has been complicated by the widening of McGinnis Ferry Road, where the two trails will meet. He also said Forsyth County has come to terms with Halcyon on a land swap deal that will extend the trail farther south toward the county line.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Chief Information Officer Brandon Kenney has been appointed assistant county manager.

Kenney took over the role June 7.

“Brandon’s experience in management KENNEY and understanding of the county’s vision for the future made him an ideal candidate for the position,” County Manager Kevin Tanner said. “We look forward to working with Brandon in this new role.”

Kenney will oversee the Planning and Community Development, Parks and Recreation, Water and Sewer, Senior Services, Code Compliance and Animal Services departments.

Kenney has served as chief infor-

mation officer since 2016 where he managed and administered the county’s information technology initiatives and activities by leading the Information Systems & Technology and Geographic Information Services departments.

Prior to his time with Forsyth County, Kenney served as vice president of Information Technology and CIO for Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation in Norcross. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in operations and systems management from the University of South Alabama and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Kenney was a finalist for the Georgia CIO of the Year Award in 2015 and 2019.

He will replace retiring Deputy County Manager Tim Merritt who served in the role since 2010.

Clark named director of Personnel Services FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Risk and Safety Manager Charity Clark has been appointed director of the county’s Personnel Services Department. Clark, who began her new position CLARK June 7, replaces Pat Carson, who retired after 19 years in the role.

Clark has served as risk and safety manager for 13 years. She has been responsible for leading the county in its transition from a fully insured workers’ compensation program to being self-insured in 2014, bringing a savings of over $1 million since the transition, according to the county.

She was named Risk Professional of the Year in 2018 by the Georgia Public Risk Management Association and was also awarded the Safety and Risk Leadership Award

by Local Government Risk Management Services.

Clark previously served as human resources director for Dawson County. She holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from North Georgia College & State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Brenau University.

She holds certifications as a project and program manager from Steven’s Institute of Technology and a professional designation as a certified Workers’ Compensation professional.

County doubles lot minimum for manufactured dwellings

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Commission voted June 3 to double the minimum lot size for manufactured dwellings in areas not zoned for mobile homes.

Commissioners unanimously voted to increase the minimum lot size from 1- to 2-acres. Officials say the move, along with other updates approved by the board June 3, were made to close a “loophole” in the county codes that allowed for de-facto mobile home parks.

Forsyth County issued 14 mobile home permits last year.

The Board of Commissioner’s vote went against recommendations made by the Planning Commission in April.

Planning commissioners took issue with the 2-acre minimum, stating Forsyth County’s steep land costs could price out many families if lot size minimums were increased.

That issue was also raised by a representative from a North Georgia-based company specializing in manufactured homes at the Planning Commission’s April 27 meeting.

Taylor Jackson, vice president of Dahlonega-based Bob’s Family Housing, said only select banks issue loans for manufactured homes, and those that do will not finance the purchase if the land and property improvement costs match or

exceed the price of the home itself — on average about $70,000 to $80,000.

The Planning Commission voted to recommend holding the lot size minimum at 1 acre for residential zones outside of mobile home parks.

However, several members of the County Commission said the move was required to close the “loophole” within the county’s codes, and that there are still some safeguards in place to allow for mobile homes in certain situations.

Mobile homes would still be permitted on lots of under 2 acres if the home were to replace an existing mobile home, and a variance could be granted to lower the threshold on individual lots outside of subdivisions.

The manufactured home ordinance also includes a medical hardship clause which allows a mobile home to be installed in the rear yard on the property of a detached single-family home, under certain zoning designations, for medical purposes. That includes a situation in which the applicant can show the mobile home is being installed because the health or health-related problem of a family member “warrants close proximity of that relative for care or monitoring purposes,” or when the occupant is 65-years or older.

Though he eventually voted for the ordinance change, Commissioner Todd Levent took issue with raising the minimum lot size. Levent echoed some of the sentiments of the Planning Commission, including that

local land prices would price potential mobile home buyers out of the county. He also said there could be a way to shut down the de-facto mobile home park loophole without “punishing others.”

Levent also floated the possibility of raising the minimum lot size to 2 acres north of Ga. 20, but keeping it lower in areas south of the roadway due to the area’s higher land prices.

Other commissioners disagreed.

“Quite frankly, between the hardship and the legal non-conforming [use], I think people are covered right now at 2 acres,” Commissioner Laura Semanson said.

Commission Chairwoman Cindy Jones Mills suggested the Planning Commission was not fully aware the ordinance change was meant to close the county code’s loophole.

The board backed the Planning Commission’s other recommendations, which includes provisions that any skirting should be brick, masonry or siding that has the appearance “of these materials” and should enclose the undercarriage of the home, and that utility meters should not be placed in highly visible areas. The board also voted in favor of the Planning Commission’s recommendation the minimum home size should be determined by a property’s underlying zoning.

County staff had suggested a minimum of 900-square feet. Some zones within the county allow for a minimum of 700-square feet.

Local cities outline times yard work is permitted

BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmedia.com NORTH METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — The COVID-19 pandemic has kept people mostly at home over the last 16 months, and for many, the time at home has spurred an added focus on maintaining their lawns.

However, there are some regulations in place on when this work can be done.

Most Metro Atlanta cities have designated specific times in which yardwork and the use of loud machinery is permitted to ensure safety and promote quality of life.

Below is a breakdown of each local jurisdiction’s laws and ordinances related to residential lawn mowing and yard work.

Cumming The City of Cumming does not currently have any property maintenance ordinances in place. This means that property appearance is left to the better judgment of the owner, unless otherwise

instructed. There are time restrictions set on the use of landscape maintenance and motorized devices such as leaf blowers, lawn mowers, or chain saws.

Machinery is to be used between the hours of 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and is otherwise considered a noise violation.

sunset Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to sunset on weekends and federal holidays. Although there is no mandate on the length lawns must be kept, residents are asked to maintain their property and keep it in a clean, safe, and sanitary conditions.

Alpharetta Unlike some of its neighbors, Alpharetta does not currently have any residential time restrictions or noise ordinances in place for general yard work. According to the city’s Property Maintenance Code, lawns must remain under 12 inches in length. This regulation is kept to ensure a modest appearance for all residential property.

Roswell Roswell’s extended hours for landscaping work allow lawn maintenance and machinery to operate daily between the hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. A clean appearance is recommended for all residents with yard waste to be placed at their curb by 8 a.m. on waste collection days. Branches and tree limbs must not exceed four feet in length or weight more than 50 pounds.

Milton While Milton enforces time and noise restrictions, the hours of operation are flexible. For residents, lawn maintenance machinery is permitted from 7:30 a.m. to

Vietnam veterans group awards five scholarships Yard: CUMMING, Ga. — Cumming Chapter 1030 of the Vietnam Veterans of America awarded five $2,000 college scholarships at its June 1 meeting.

Each scholarship was awarded in memory of a Georgian killed in action in the Vietnam War. The winners are: Christopher Kelly of West Forsyth High School. His scholarship was awarded to honor Marine Corps PFC Larry Michael Allen of Decatur.

Benjamin Hempker of South Forsyth High School. His Scholarship honors the memory of Air Force Captain Hilliard Wilbanks of Cornelia, Georgia. Wilbanks was the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Emily Leggett of North Forsyth High School. Her Scholarship was awarded in memory of Navy Second Lieutenant John Luther Fuller of Atlanta.

Isabella Rose Lafferty of Denmark High School. Her scholarship was presented to honor the memory of Army Staff Sergeant Robert Lee Mosley of Atlanta.

Shelby Mauldin of Denmark high School. Her Scholarship honors the memory of Army Specialist 4th Class Robert Paul Gipson of Athens.

Families of Captain Hilliard, Staff Sergeant Mosley and PFC Allen were in attendance for the ceremony. Some traveling from as far as Maryland to be present as the heroism of their relative was remembered.

Lawn maintenance requiring motorized equipment for contractors and residents can operate between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Landscaping work is not permitted on Sundays or federal holidays.

Roswell welcomes international tech firm GreyOrange relocation brings 200 jobs to area

ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell added to its corporate portfolio recently with the announcement that GreyOrange, an India-based software and robotics automation company, will invest more than $1 million to relocate its global headquarters to the area.

The company’s new international headquarters is at 660 Hembree Parkway. The site includes 110,000 square feet of office and warehousing space that serves as a global fulfillment center for building and shipping autonomous mobile robots. Founded in New Delhi, India, and with operations there as well as in the U.S., Europe and Japan, GreyOrange leverages artificial intelligence and robotics to optimize fulfillment operations for companies worldwide.

“Atlanta is internationally known as a ‘supply chain city’ due to the infrastructure, university support, and leading companies headquartered in the metropolitan area,” said Chief Operating Officer of GreyOrange Jeff Cashman. “Atlanta is the perfect environment to accelerate the evolution and growth of GreyOrange as we continue to innovate intelligent fulfillment concepts for our global customers.”

The move will create 200 additional jobs to the area.

Health Insurance – What are my options, and what is right for me?

Why do some tumors track along nerves?

At a recent conference, an outstanding lecture by Dr. Scott Lester of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, provided insight into the question of why tumors exhibit “perineural invasion” – the behavior of tumors wrapping around and travelling along nerves. The answer is another example of how nature and biology never cease to surprise.

In medical school, one of my favorite professors loved to say, “50% of what you are going to learn during these four years will ultimately be proved wrong.”

As I sat in my hard wooden chair taking notes on apparently error-ridden knowledge, I hoped that the 50% that was misinformation was at least not the half that mattered.

As it turns out, one of the pieces of misinformation apparently concerned perineural invasion. In medical school, I was taught that some tumors track along nerves because nerves are convenient highways to other parts of the body. This was the “path of least resistance idea.” Professors also posited that some of the vessels and lymphatics running along with the nerve are an additional reason for tumor growth along nerves – essentially the idea that tumors spreading along nerves is really just tumors spreading along the surrounding lymphatics and blood vessels – “business as usual.”

Several recent studies presented

by Dr. Lester have provided data that sheds new light on this subject: In one experiment, scientists placed a nerve next to but well apart from a tumor growing in a petri dish. The tumor extended a strand of cells in the direction of the nerve and grew toward the nerve. This challenges the idea that perineural tumor growth in patients is simply cancer extension along nerves already touching a tumor. Then, the scientists tested proteins found in the nerve and found that the entire nerve did not have to be present in the dish to attract tumor growth. When scientists put a small amount of a nerve protein called GDNF (glial derived neurotrophic factor) in the dish, the tumor grew towards the GDNF. Apparently, proteins in the nerve attract tumor growth. So nerves are not just highways: some tumors seek out nerves by growing towards proteins that nerves produce.

In another experiment, scientists placed pancreatic cancer cells next to the sciatic nerve inside of a live rat. Predictably, the cancer grew and invaded the sciatic nerve. The muscles relying on the sciatic nerve were unable to function which caused partial paralysis. However, when the scientists delivered radiation to the rat’s sciatic nerve BEFORE implanting the pancreatic cancer, the tumor grew but paraly-

sis did not occur upon tumor implantation against the nerve. Nerves that had received radiation produced less GDNF. We have long thought of radiation as primarily working by killing cancerous cells because radiation is known to cause breaks in cancer cell DNA resulting in cell death. But these studies led Dr. Lester, a radiation oncologist, to ask if radiation therapy’s effect on healthy tissue is just as important to its success as its effect on cancer cells themselves. Perhaps in some cases, radiation’s effect on growth factors in healthy nerve tissue is critical to preventing cancer recurrence.

As many questions as answers are raised by these studies. Will we one day have medicines that treat perineural tumors by inhibiting neurotrophic factors? For tumors that do not track along nerves but that invade muscle, bone or other tissue, will medicines increasingly target growth factors in these tissues to prevent spread?

Already, medicine that targets “vascular endothelial growth factor” is being used to treat certain cancers. Perhaps one day a local injection of a medicine that blocks neurotrophic factors will be used to help treat perineural tumors.

As a Mohs surgeon, I took interest in these studies because many skin cancers track along nerves and because identifying perineural invasion under the microscope is an important part of my job. When I find significant perineural invasion, radiation therapy after surgery is an option I discuss. I hope that I might one day be able to offer a targeted pill or injection as an alternative to radiation.

However, I thought that these studies are of broad general interest because they are an intriguing example of how the obvious or intuitive answer so often is not the correct answer when biology is involved. Tumor growing along nerves is not just a case of taking the path of least resistance. So much of what we assume or are taught does not turn out to be the whole story.

Nature is always more complex than we imagine, and new discoveries provide opportunities for medical advancement.

Hey, Man — Know Your Stats If you’re a baseball fan, you probably know the batting average of your favorite player. If you look forward to football in the fall, you likely study the numbers to pick the perfect fantasy football team.

But there are other numbers even more important for you to know — your health stats. Do you know your BP (blood pressure)? What about your BMI (body mass index)? Maybe you can run an eight-minute mile or bench press 250 pounds, but when was the last time you got a good look at your health at an annual checkup?

Men are less likely than women to regularly see a doctor. They might feel confident they’re healthy and only seek care if they get sick, or they may want to deny the signs of an issue. But it’s still crucial that men stay on top of their

health — and that includes knowing those stats.

“Men need to check in with a doctor at least once a year for their annual physical,” said Wellstar Primary Care Physician Dr. Stephen Cox. “It’s better to be proactive with your health, find issues early and prevent problems before they start.”

Men should know their health stats including: PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen Test).

Men who are 50 or older should discuss testing with their provider, according to the American Cancer Society. Men at a higher risk, including African American men and those who had a brother or father diagnosed with cancer before age 65, should ask their provider about testing at age 45. Patients who had more than one close relative with prostate cancer at an early age should have this conversation with their provider when they’re 40.

LDL & HDL (low-density and highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol). This blood test measures cholesterol levels and should be part of your wellness routine starting in your 20s. For men age 20 or older, healthy LDL levels should be under 100 milligrams per deciliter, and

aim to keep your HDL above 40.

ALP (alkaline phosphatase), ALT (alanine transaminase) and AST (aspartate aminotransferase). These are enzymes made by the liver and will be included in the results of your comprehensive metabolic panel. Normal results are 40 to 129 units per liter for ALP, 7 to 55 for ALT and 8 to 48 for AST. BMI (body mass index). This metric determines whether you have a healthy body weight and categorizes obesity levels. A normal BMI range is between 18.5 - 25.

BP (blood pressure). Your provider will take your blood pressure during your regular visit, but you can also find blood pressure checking stations at many pharmacies or buy your own device to use at home. Blood pressure under 120/80 is considered normal.

BGL (blood glucose level). If you are diabetic, you should test your blood sugar regularly. Speak with your provider about if this is a health stat you need to monitor.

Along with staying up-to-date on those health stats, men should also be getting regular colorectal cancer screenings. The American Cancer Society recommends that people at average

risk for colorectal cancer screening get checked regularly beginning at age 45.

Screenings should continue through age 75, and after that patients can discuss their personal risk and history with their provider.

Depending on your personal and family health history, your provider may recommend additional screenings. Be sure not to skip your annual physical, and reach out to your provider right away if you notice something wrong.

That hippie book summons past existence So, an old friend of mine just gave me a book. It looks good and is about one of my favored subjects — all the old rockers from way back in the ’60s and their stories. It’s a hardback and I am RAY APPEN sure it is out of print.

Actually, it was for a reason, but it had to do with a toilet, so I won’t get into it.

Anyway, a couple days after I got the book, I started stewing about it — like walking around with a penny in my shoe. Why would my friend give away such a cool book? He is just as much a fan of “the old days” as I. “Or is he?” I started to wonder. The more I thought about it the more worried I became; some might say the more “paranoid.”

A long time ago we lived on Key Biscayne — another island but this one off the coast of Miami. Christina and I had a friend who was married to a “Key-rat” named Tony. The deal with Tony was that whenever he met a new person, inevitably within the first 10 minutes, he would pull out his wallet and take out what looked to be an old piece of colored paper and hold it out. The other person usually would get a blank look on his face and Tony would then announce: “It’s a ticket — a ticket to Woodstock — my ticket,” and then wait with great expectations for the other person to respond appropriately.

After I watched Tony do this a couple times, I realized that he was somewhat of a drunk, living in the past, and that as long as he was like that, his life was probably not going to go well. Ultimately his wife — our friend — did divorce him, and I imagine that he is still on the Key, still living in the past, still walking around with that ticket in his wallet — and not doing well.

I thought about Tony’s ticket after my friend gave me his book on the ’60s.

Was my continued interest in “way back then” my “ticket”? Was that pebble in my shoe my fear that I too am living in the past like Tony? Hmmm.

I know that in many ways my friend who gifted me the book has changed

since we were in college. Back then, he could play every Dylan song ever written and sing them too. So, he knew the lyrics. He was a free spirit and we were in sync, he and I. Today he lives close by, is a husband, father, as well as a successful businessperson too — just like I am, I guess. But maybe he has moved on in ways that I have not?

So that’s my fear with that book my friend gave me. Maybe I am just stuck back in time and haven’t had the maturity to grow or the sense to move on.

That’s the penny in my shoe. There is this voice deep inside me that keeps asking questions about me, questions about my assumptions, my values, my frame of reference, my status.

I think that questioning comes with age and ageing. You question stuff, especially about yourself. “How am I doing?”

And sometimes you are torn. Often you are torn.

Dylan sang that “those not busy being born are busy dying.” I think he was saying we need to be open to new ideas and not be locked into the past. But Faulkner said that “the past isn’t dead, that it isn’t even past,” which to me, among other things, means that the past is always important, that it will always be relevant. Somewhere in-between those two bookends I guess is a truth to be found.

The lure of greenways You hear a lot about greenways these days – and for good reason too.

Just what, exactly, is a greenway?

Most dictionaries define greenways as linear, strip-like stretches of relatively STEVE HUDSON undeveloped land Get Outside Georgia, which are there for aa4bw@comcast.net recreation (mostly hiking and biking) or for environmental protection. They’re usually urban, mostly paved and often follow creeks or traverse other ecologically interesting terrain. For urban adventurers, what’s not to love?

Over the years, I’ve become especially fond of greenways. Close to home, I’ve spent untold hours walking on the Big Creek Greenway, which more or less follows Big Creek. I think I’ve walked or biked just about the whole thing at one time or another. There’s still a gap in the middle, but they’re working on that. It’ll be great when the connection is complete.

Another greenway I’ve been enjoying these last few years is the Noonday Creek Trail which follows (you guessed it) Noonday Creek over near Woodstock.

Ellie the resident mini Schnauser is especially fond of this one because it provides access to Woofstock, which is (in her words) “bark-bark-bark-barkBARK!!!” If you don’t speak Dog, that means “a really cool place for dogs to RUN!!!”

Those two get a lot of my greenway time. But there’s another greenway-type trail that I’ve been getting to know, and that’s the Suwanee Creek Trail.

This one, over in Gwinnett County, is just far enough off my usual beaten track that it slipped under my radar for a long time. We really are creatures of habit, aren’t we?

But the other day I was looking for somewhere new to do some walking. I did a little searching, and the Suwanee Creek Trail came up. It looked promising, so off I went.

I started at the Suwanee Creek Park end of the trail. This access is located off Buford Highway a half a mile or so south of McGinnis Ferry Road. Besides being the beginning of the trail, it’s also the site of a neat disk golf course.

That’s something else I’m playing with, though I am unbelievably terrible at it.

But I have fun.

On this trip, though, I was hiking.

I parked the trusty gray truck, put on the walking shoes, and set off down the paved trail to see what I would see.

For the first leg of this adventure, I hiked from Suwanee Creek Park to the McGinnis Ferry access point. The trail actually goes underneath McGinnis Ferry Road, so there’s no need to risk life and limb trying to cross that busy thoroughfare.

But once you’ve passed under the roadway, how do you regain the trail?

That, as it turned out, was a bit confusing. Eventually, I found myself standing with another hiker at the trail map trying to figure it out. He too was trying to decide how to continue beyond that point. Eventually we discovered that the secret was to follow the trail under McGinnis Ferry Road and then continue along the paved trail to a parking area.

Once there, make your way from the parking area to a wide paved sidewalk along McGinnis Ferry Road, then cross the creek on the sidewalk via the McGinnis Ferry Road bridge, and then (once across the bridge) turn left to pick up the trail. It’s easy once you know how, but it’s confusing till you figure it out.

From that point, the trail zigzags down the side of a hill and then continues to follow the creek, rising and falling as it goes. At one point you’re far above the creek as it flows along sedately a long ways below you. The view is great, and you may want to linger.

But I’d used up a lot of my lingering time trying to figure out how to regain the trail, so I kept moving. In fact, I didn’t have time left to finish the whole trail as I’d hoped. I only made it as far as the Martin Farm Park trail access before I had to turn back toward the truck and then head home to supper.

How was it? Supper was great. You should have come by – we had plenty!

Oh – of course, you mean the trail.

Like I said, I love greenway trails, especially if they’re shaded like lots of this one is. That’s something to appreciate more and more as we move toward summer.

I also appreciated the boardwalk sections, which have always been a favorite trail feature. Boardwalks often cross wetlands, areas rich in wildlife, and you can bet I’ll be carrying binoculars on future excursions.

There’s one other neat feature worth noting– a tiny little covered-type trail bridge not far from McGinnis Ferry Road. The bridge carries you over a tiny creek and was an unexpected surprise.

It’s always nice to find new places, and this one was definitely in the newto-me category. I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of it – maybe starting this very afternoon!

Lambert wins Director’s Cup for third time in five years

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Athletics programs in Forsyth County fared well in the 2020-21 Director’s Cup final standings, with Lambert with the overall title in Class 7A. The Georgia Athletic Directors Association awards Director’s Cups to the top performing schools to honor the best overall, boys and girls athletic programs in all classifications of the Georgia High School Association.

The accolades are awarded through a points system based on results from each school’s performance in all sports during the athletic year.

The 2020-21 season marks the return of the Director’s Cup. They were not awarded for the 2019-20 season due to the cancellation of spring sports amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the third time in the last five years, Lambert won the overall Director’s Cup in the state’s highest classification, 7A. Lambert has not finished no worse than No. 2 in the final overall standings since the creation of Class 7A in the 2016-17 season.

The Longhorns’ Director’s Cup win was spurred by a host of state titles and state runner-up placements the program earned this year.

Lambert lifted state championship trophy in boys lacrosse, girls swim-

ming and girls golf. The program also earned state runner-up finished in boys tennis, soccer and golf, and girls tennis, soccer and cheer.

The Longhorns also won the boys Director’s Cup title, with the girls program placing second to Walton.

Other Forsyth County teams also placed well.

West Forsyth was third overall in 7A (girls third, boys fifth). The Wolverines won the inaugural flag football state championship, and the girls soccer team won its first state title. The Wolverines had state runner-up placements in girls lacrosse and earned 90 out of 100 possible points for their performance in the traditional and dual state wrestling meets.

South Forsyth also placed in the top-10 overall, placing sixth in overall scores with the boys in 11th and the girls in sixth. The War Eagles racked up two state titles this year in boys soccer and cheer, with deep playoff runs and strong finishes in boys and girls lacrosse, flag football and girls golf.

In its first year in 7A, Denmark placed 18th out of 45 schools, led by a 10th-place finish from its boys program behind strong performances form its soccer, cross-country, baseball and tennis teams.

Forsyth Central was 33rd overall with North Forsyth in 36th.
