Teen drowns in Lake Lanier FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A teen drowned in Lake Lanier at Young Deer Park on May 20.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources identified the victim as Sathvik Kothapu, 19, of Cumming. According to the DNR, Kothapu tried to swim across the cove but got tired and went underwater. He never resurfaced. Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies and a dive team from the county’s Fire Department assisted DNR game wardens search for the teen.

Authorities searched about 90 minutes before they recovered his body from about 22 feet of water, according to the DNR.

Woman swipes cigarettes, threatens store cashier FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies arrested a woman who jumped over the counter during a May 21 dispute with a clerk at the Speedway convenience store on McFarland Parkway.

A 20-year-old woman from Alpharetta was charged with forcible robbery/purse

PUBLIC SAFETY snatching and making terroristic threats.

She remained jailed on $27,540 bail at press time.

The suspect tried to buy cigarettes and grew irate when the cashier refused to sell the tobacco products to her without ID. She jumped over the counter and snatched the smokes off the rack, then threatened to kill the clerk, according to deputies.

Man’s goodwill gesture lands him in jail FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Chicago man showed up to a DUI traffic stop May 21 along Ga. 400 to pick up an acquaintance’s car, but he was later arrested after he reportedly gave deputies a fake license.

Tommye Brown, 25, was charged with obstruction, identity fraud, driving while license suspended and possession, display or use of false/altered document.

Deputies stopped a woman for speeding and determined she was driving impaired.

She was arrested for DUI but called Brown to come drive her car from the scene so it wouldn’t get towed. When Brown arrived, he gave officers a South Carolina license with a different man’s name. Deputies determined it was fake.

When they tried to take Brown into custody, he ran back to the car he drove to the scene and tried to jump in. The car was locked. Brown then tried fleeing into the woods, but officers quickly caught him.

County Commission considers future commercial corridors

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — With Forsyth County’s continual growth, officials are studying new areas to designate as commercial corridors. The County Commission discussed the matter at its May 25 work session.

The county is in the early stages of updating its comprehensive plan, which serves as a guidebook for its future growth and land use. An initial stage in the current process is to outline where commercial and industrial properties should be concentrated, specifically areas that are not already outlined as commercial corridors, and whether these zones should not include any residential development.

The corridors are intended to be along major intersections or adjacent to other commercial uses.

The Board of Commissioners approved a list of about a dozen areas throughout

the county adjacent to major intersections or roadways that it will consider adding to its list of commercial-focused areas. This list will be passed along to the county’s consultant, which will work to fine tune specific commercial areas and regulations on new developments within them.

The list of proposed new commercial corridors includes the Ronald Reagan Boulevard extension, Bethany Bend, Freedom Parkway, Ga. 53 and Ga. 9.

North of Ga. 400, other future commercial corridors could include areas of Jot Em Down Road, Marsett Parkway, State Barn Road, Martin Road and Settingdown Road.

Though the board signed off on the list, there was discussion spurred by a suggestion by county staff that some of these areas could be designated as “commercial only” areas. Some commissioners expressed that if residential developments are permitted within these corridors, any new commercial or industrial growth is likely to receive pushback from nearby

homeowners.

Commissioner Alfred John said if an area was identified as a commercial corridor, but even one residential development was permitted in the area, any subsequent non-residential development would be met with resistance.

“Any adjacent property that might consider going commercial might get pushback from those neighbors,” John said. “They don’t want any commercial adjacent to them, and that’s the problem we faced on Peachtree Parkway. Any commercial zoning that has come up, you get significant pushback.”

Commissioner Todd Levent said another example of that situation could be seen along Ronald Reagan Boulevard or on McFarland Parkway, two areas he believes “should have been” mostly commercial. However, he said, prior boards approved homes in those areas, and those homeowners take issue with new adjacent commercial development even through their homes should probably not have

been approved there to begin with.

Chairwoman Cindy Jones Mills said that is why transitional properties from commercial to residential, specifically mixed-use districts, are vital.

“The transition properties are just as important as along the corridors,” Mills said. “When we are looking at the commercial corridors, we need to make sure the properties that come off of that need to be transitional.”

Mills also felt the county needs to identify what kind of commercial and industrial uses would be allowable in these zones.

“You can only put so many strip malls along corridors,” she said. “We don’t want to have a bunch of dying strip malls out there.”

Further discussions on commercial corridors are slated in the upcoming weeks. The board is set to consider added regulations and design standards on new developments within these areas at a work session this month.

County honors retiring employees

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County officials recently recognized three longtime employees for their service to the county.

Deputy County Manager Tim Merritt is set to retire this week with former Personnel Director Pat Carson and Chief Financial Officer David Gruen recently serving their final days with the county ahead of retirement.

Merritt was recognized by the Board of Commissioners for his service during the May 25 work session ahead of his June 4 retirement. Merritt joined Forsyth County as deputy county manager in 2010. In the role, Merritt oversaw the Planning and Community Development, Parks and Recreation, Water and Sewer, Senior Services, Code Compliance and Animal Services Departments. In 2017, he served as interim county manager.

Forsyth County Personnel Director Pat Carson was also recently recognized.

Carson joined the county in 2002.

Under her leadership, employee policies and classifications were updated. Carson also implemented the position classification system and transitioned the application system to an online format.

Through Carson’s tenure, she worked to make sure employees were treated fairly and equitably while maintaining policy guidelines in line with directives from both the Civil Service Board and Board

of Commissioners, according to county statement.

Following nearly 11 years with Forsyth County government, Chief Financial Officer David Gruen retired on April 23 and was recognized by the Board of Commissioners for his service on May 6.

“Dave helped guide the County’s finances out of the economic downturn when he joined us in 2010 and he has been a key component in making Forsyth County what it is today,” County Commission Chairwoman Cindy Jones Mills said. “He has kept Forsyth County taxpayers in mind with his financial management and for that, we are grateful. We wish him well in retirement.”

Gruen joined Forsyth County as the County’s first Director of Finance/Controller in late 2010. He then was named Chief Financial Officer in 2014.

“I would like to express my appreciation to Dave for his dedication and service to Forsyth County for the past decade,” said County Manager Kevin Tanner. “His leadership and management of finances will be felt for many years to come.”

During Gruen’s tenure at Forsyth County, he helped increase the County’s credit rating to AAA with three rating agencies, led the county to refund its bonds for savings of over $20 million in interest through the terms of the bonds, created a new grant policy and process to bring in millions of dollars in new grants, and setup a countywide Capital Improvement Program.

Forsyth Schools to use CARES funds for summer school

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmedia.com CUMMING, Ga. — Community input on how Forsyth County Schools should direct federal stimulus funds showed most parents want the money to help stem learning loss after months of COVID-19 disruption.

That came as welcome news to district officials. The nearly $13 million Forsyth County Schools recently received as part of the third round of stimulus payments came with some strings attached.

“The [support for] supplemental learning is quite convenient because the funds require a 20 percent set aside for learning loss programs,” Amy Chang, director of federal programs for Forsyth County Schools, said.

That amounts to $2.5 million which will be used primarily for summer school programs to fill in learning gaps that widened over the past school year.

Most of the focus will be on elementary and middle school students who were most impacted by disruptions in education this past year.

A recent study by Georgia State University found substantial learning losses among students in the metro

Atlanta area. Most impacted were students in grades K-8 in the key subjects areas of reading and math.

While Forsyth County schools were not part of the GSU study, Chang says their own data confirms similar findings.

In kindergarten through 5th grade, the district identified over 1,800 students in the “emergency” category and in need of targeted intervention. Among middle school students almost 1,500 students were failing English/Language Arts and/or math.

The academic struggles also hit high schools. The number of students failing classes more than doubled from the 2019-20 school year to the 2020-21 school year.

Identifying students most in need of supplemental services was a task for staff and teachers, said Chang.

“We were challenged by a lack of state assessments to compare since there were no Milestone tests in 2020, which could have provided a starting point for 2021 achievements,” Chang said.

The Milestones are federally-mandated state assessments given each year to kids in grades three through 12 to determine achievement levels. In elementary and middle school, the tests

determine promotion and retention. In high school the tests count for 20 percent of a student’s grade.

Last year the Milestone assessments were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results from this year’s test had limited value without a starting point from last year, Chang said.

Instead, the district relied on information the schools had that could provide helpful data, such as assessments and diagnostic tools. The goal, Chang said, was to identify the students in need of services over the summer and get them back on track.

“We focused on reading levels at elementary schools and how many students were in the emergency category, [which is] two years below grade level,” Chang said.

In middle school, staff looked at students were at risk of failing in reading and math, or who had not mastered the skills.

The district is now finalizing which elementary and middle school students will receive targeted instruction during the summer months.

“It is invite only based on the needs assessment based on multiple criterion,” Chang said. “The whole point is address learning loss.”

She said the decision by the Forsyth County School System to open schools last August when many system opted to go fully virtual stemmed even greater learning loss.

“It was the right call,” Chang said.

“Being in school…in front of their teachers with access to resources and information absolutely helped.”

Forsyth County Schools received a total of $20.5 million under the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) program through three rounds of funding to help respond and recover from the pandemic.

ing a bubble in U.S. housing.” No one is suggesting that home prices will continue to rise at their current pace (up 13% from a year ago), but prices are expected to continue their upward trend albeit at a much more gradual pace.

How did we get to this point?

Many factors combined to create the “perfect storm” we are experiencing today. The primary culprit is the lack of inventory due to a 10-year deficit in new housing starts. Additionally, mortgage rates close to record lows have continued to attract buyers despite rising prices and an influx of “cash rich” buyers from other markets have played a big role in creating this uber competitive landscape. According to the latest Case Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index, home prices have risen for 10 consecutive months and continue to climb.

What comes next?

Buyers will be relieved to know that housing inventory is projected to increase due to new home construction, the end of the mortgage forbearance program and the increasing comfort level of homeowners who delayed selling due to COVID-19. Sellers can rest assured that even with the influx of homes coming on the market, demand is forecasted to remain strong through 2021.

Those haunted by memories of 2008 can take solace in the fact that the fundamentals of our market today are very different. Lenders are no longer issu-

If you’re looking for a test that’s a little more detailed, you can turn on the unit and check it with a thermometer.

3. Change Your Ceiling Fan Direction Did you know your ceiling fan is designed to rotate differently depend-

ing on the season? Changing your ceiling fan direction seasonally is one of the simplest ways to get the most out of your ceiling fan. In winter months, it should rotate clockwise to help distribute heat that’s risen. In the summer, you should run your fan counterclockwise at higher speeds to push cool air down to the floor. Even though the ceiling fan does not reduce the temperature inside of the room, it does help the room feel cooler. It has also been found that the average ceiling fan can lower a room’s temperature by four to five degrees. Check to see which direction the fans in your home are moving, and, if necessary, hit the small black switch near the base to change directions.

Forsyth County athletes shine in 2020-21 season

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The 2020-21 season was another banner year for Forsyth County high school sports.

In all, Forsyth County programs earned seven state championships in team sports, 14 individual state titles and six relay crowns. Ten squads earned state runner-up placements in team sports.

Cheerleading Forsyth County programs were well represented in the cheer championships with five local squads placing in the top-15.

South Forsyth again stood atop the podium by winning its second state championship in four years in Class 7A. The War Eagles placed a single point ahead of cross-county rivals Lambert, winners of six state titles since 2012 and the defending champs.

Denmark, the defending Class 4A champions, placed sixth in their first year after moving up several classifications. West Forsyth edged Archer for 10th and North Forsyth finished 14th to round out Forsyth County’s strong showing in 7A competition.

Forsyth Central also tied for first in Co-Ed competition with Mill Creek and Northgate and placed second in the state following tiebreaking procedures, giving all five Forsyth County teams a placement in the 2020-21 cheer state finals.

Football With a limited roster amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Pinecrest Academy pivoted from GHSA play into 8-man football and excelled. The Paladins won the 2020 Georgia Association of Private & Parochial Schools Division II state championship, the program’s first state title, last fall.

Pinecrest compiled a 9-2 overall record and beat Lanier Christian 44-18 to capture the state championship.

championship in eight seasons against its Forsyth County foes before reaching the quarterfinals in the postseason.

Volleyball Lambert volleyball secured the program’s third region championship in four years last fall and earned its second trip to the final four.

As the South boys celebrated the end of their region title drought, the North Forsyth girls returned to the mountaintop. After their streak of region titles ended in the 2019-20 season, North went 11-1 in 6-7A to claim the region title.

The Raiders also made their third trip to the final four in four years.

Swim and dive Lambert girls swim and dive returned to the top spot on the podium of the swim and dive state championships in February. The Longhorns edged Walton by four points for the title, their first since winning four straight from 2013-16.

Sara Maschmeier, Ally Zaleski, Ella Jones, Sarah Blackstone teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay. Kara West, Mia Wallace, Ally Zaleski and Blackstone won the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay state titles.

Jones earned another championship in individual competition in the 100-yard butterfly.

Other local swimmers earned state titles, including West Forsyth’s Brett Sasser, Owen Holland, Griffin Egolf and Jack Aikins, who repeated as state champions in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay events. Aikins also defended his state titles in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races.

Michelle Cummo of West Forsyth won the 1-meter dive state title.

Dance South Forsyth earned a state runner-up finish at the dance state championships in February. The team won the hip hop competition.

Wrestling Forsyth County wrestlers had a strong showing at the traditional state meet in February, with some finals matches featuring two local competitors.

West Forsyth’s Dylan Fairchild defended in state title in the 285-lb. Class 7A class by downing Lambert’s Thomas Dossett for the championships.

West finished second in team scores at the traditional meet and at the team dual state meet.

The 160-lb. crown also came down to two Forsyth County wrestlers. West’s Ethan Rickert took the title over Denmark’s Ethan Culbreth.

Avery Krippner of Forsyth Central completed an undefeated season to take the 182-lb. state title in Class 7A. Krippner took down Tristan Graham of North Forsyth in the finals.

SPORTS took home a state championship, besting the field in the 152-lb. division, to complete an undefeated season.

Baseball Forsyth Central baseball had a historic year in 2021 to reach the state semifinals for the first time in program history.

The Bulldogs compiled an 18-12 regular season to earn the No. 2 seed from Region 6-7A in the playoffs to kickstart their memorable playoff run.

Central downed Archer in decisive fashion in the first round before sweeping Mill Creek. The Bulldogs then took down Grayson in a competitive three-game series to reach the 7A semifinals against North Paulding, where they lost 8-3 and 6-3 to end their run.

Denmark also had a notable first season in Class 7A, capturing the 6-7A region title over their Forsyth County foes. The Danes reached the third round of the postseason and compiled a 19-17 overall mark.

Golf Lambert girls golf continued their dominance in the state’s highest classification in May, winning the program’s seventh championship in the last eight seasons.

The Longhorns controlled the competition at the state finals in Moultrie, besting the field by 42 strokes with an almost perfect finish of placing all four of their scoring players in the top-5. Lambert was led by Averi Cline, who defended her title as the low-medalist at the state meet in Class 7A. The Lambert boys also had a podium finish, placing as state runner-up behind Milton. The West Forsyth boys placed third in overall scores.

The South Forsyth girls placed sixth in team scores, with Samantha Dewendt of Forsyth Central placing 17th overall in individual play.

Gymnastics West Forsyth’s run of gymnastics championships ended in April with Newnan taking the 6A-7A overall championship, but several local athletes placed in the competition.

Denmark’s Emma Davis was third in the all-around, powered by a state title in the floor competition and vault and a seventh-place finish in bars.

West Forsyth’s Mani Fofana was sixth on the beam and Ashlyn Scanlon of Forsyth Central was seventh in floor competition.

Lacrosse Denmark played host to the 2021 lacrosse state championships last month with the Lambert boys taking the 6A-7A state title.

The championship was Lambert’s third in five seasons.

The Longhorns ran away with the game in the fourth period to down Centennial, 17-9. Last month’s meeting was the second between the two teams for the state title after the Knights downed Lambert for the 2013 championship.

Lambert compiled a 22-1 season this year.

The West Forsyth girls were seeking their first state title this season and reached the finals but couldn’t overcome juggernaut Milton. The Wolverines lost the 6A-7A finals 13-8 to close out a 20-3 campaign.

Soccer Forsyth County soccer teams swept the 2021 Class 7A championships with the South Forsyth boys and West Forsyth girls earning state title hardware last month.

For the second time in three seasons, the boys 7A finals was an all-Forsyth County affair with South taking on Lambert.

After taking a 2-0 loss to Lambert in the regular season, South used an overtime goal from Dino Stavros to earn a dramatic win for the title. The War Eagles entered the state tournament as the No. 4 seed but rolled through the playoffs to earn the program’s first championship.

The West Forsyth girls also won its program’s first state title in another finals matchup of Forsyth County teams.

The Wolverines’ Tori DellaPeruta scored the lone goal of the game to give West a 1-0 win over rivals Lambert for the championship.

Pinecrest Academy also earned an appearance in the state finals, but for the second straight season the Paladins came up short of a title. Pinecrest fell to Holy Innocents’, 2-1, in the Class-A Private finals.

Tennis Lambert earned two state runner-up placements at the 2021 tennis state championships in May. The Lambert girls, who captured the Region 6 championship, were seeking their second straight state title but fell short of Walton, 3-1, in the 7A finals.

The Lambert boys also earned a state finals berth after taking the Region 6 crown but were downed by North Gwinnett, 3-0, for the championship.

Track and field Several Forsyth County athletes came away with championships at the track and field state meet last month.

West Forsyth earned two championships. Isaac Osifo earned the top spot on the podium in the boys Class 7A high jump with Tyler Norr taking the pole vault title.

South Forsyth’s Chris Nelson won the boys 200-meter race championship with fellow War Eagles athlete Riley Jones earned the girls pole vault title.

Denmark’s 4x800-meter relay team, including Tavian Anderson, Ethan Ashley, Hayden Hare and Karthik Kochuparambil, captured the championship in the first year the event had been included at the state meet. Lambert’s 4x800-meter relay team placed third with West Forsyth in fifth.
