Crisis team responds to one-man standoff FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies had a standoff with a gunman in crisis who barricaded himself into his Pierpoint Lane residence April 7.

Officers were dispatched to the house around 4:30 p.m. for an unknown disturbance. The 36-year-old man was reported in distress, intoxicated and threatening to take his own life, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The man exited his house several times during the standoff aiming a gun at his own head. He fired several gunshots inside the house and outside, striking multiple neighboring townhouses.

SWAT team deputies used a kinetic impact round to disable the man and take him into custody on one of the occasions he came outside armed with his gun. He was taken to Northside Hospital to be evaluated for minor injuries then taken to the Forsyth County Jail.

Deputies charged the man with aggravated assault with a firearm.

Atlanta man charged with attempted fraud

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies arrested an Atlanta man April 6 who allegedly tried to cash two fake checks in January 2020.

Steven Lewis Coppin, 54, was charged with third- and fourth-degree forgery as well as two counts of fraudulently printing, executing and negotiating fictitious checks. Deputies took him into custody from the Fulton County Jail after he was arrested in Atlanta on drug and domesticrelated charges last month, records show.

According to Forsyth County authorities, Coppin tried to cash a $1,263 paycheck from Perfect Temp Systems at the United Community Bank on Atlanta Highway on Jan. 20, 2020. A teller called the company, learned that there was no record of Coppin working there, and kept the fake check.

The suspect also allegedly tried to cash another $1,561 fake check at the United Community Bank on Buford Highway.

That transaction was also denied.

Cumming man accused of killing nearby donkey FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Cumming man shot a neighbor’s donkey along Mockingbird Road and was arrested April 8.

County adjusts regulations on conservation subdivisions

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Commission approved a slew of updates to its conservation subdivision ordinance at its April 15 meeting that aims to preserve some undisturbed areas amid the county’s extensive growth.

Conservation subdivisions generally allow for higher residential density on a site, but as a trade-off, the developer agrees to keep more land undisturbed or provide amenities like open spaces or play fields.

“We really need this (zoning) category,” Commission Chairwoman Cindy Jones Mills said. “We have land we need to conserve. I think it will really help reduce some of the mass grading.”

The updates include calculating minimum lot sizes by average square-footage versus a set minimum that was previously included in the code on lower density residential developments. The maximum residential lot coverage was also set at 50 percent in all zoning districts. The county chose to retain its 25-acre minimum size for any conservation subdivision develop-

ments with at least 5 acres of contiguous open space.

The code also requires a “pre-application conference” between the county and developer/owner at least 14 days prior to submitting an application for a conservation subdivision. County staff are required to visit the site with the developer and ask any changes to the site plan be modified before it is submitted.

Other requirements dictate that developers must adhere to the county’s tree ordinance, trails must be composed of pervious surfaces and that any structures must be at least 75-feet from any “primary” conservation area.

Ricky Bryan of Cumming-based Bryan Properties said the ordinance and updates are a “gamechanger” that will reduce mass grading of new developments and give developers flexibility in reaching infrastructure requirements without maxing out residential density. He added that once the county starts receiving applications for these subdivisions, it will expose the work-in-progress ordinance’s strengths and weaknesses, and the county should be amenable to updating it if required.

Forsyth County commissioners OK backyard chicken ordinance

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Residents in certain areas of the county will now be permitted to house chickens their backyard.

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance April 15 that permits residents to keep chickens provided they meet certain requirements and it is permissible under their HOA covenant, if applicable.

The ordinance has been under the county’s microscope since late last year, with commissioners, county staff and other interested parties finalizing the regulation last week. Some of the delay in approving the ordinance was to ensure it did not inadvertently conflict with ordinances related to housing chickens on agricultural properties.

Under the code, up to eight chickens can be kept at any one home under certain zoning designations where the property is at least one-half acre.

Roosters or crowing poultry cannot be kept under the ordinance. All chickens must be genus gallus gallus domesticus and raised as a pet or as a non-commercial source of eggs and/or meat.

A chicken coop must also be constructed that is farther than 20 feet from the rear or side property lines and at least 50 feet from the homes of other properties.

If the zoning of the property requires more

stringent buffers, those codes would apply.

A building permit to construct a coop will not be required.

Certain requirements for the squarefootage provided for each chicken in the coop are also included in the ordinance.

When people are present in their backyard, chickens must be kept in an enclosure, such as a “chicken tractor.”

Slaughtering chickens on site is prohibited.

Amy Bartholomew, a local veterinarian who assisted the county in drafting its ordinance, strongly supported the county permitting backyard chickens. She has advocated for keeping chickens as family pets and told those with concerns backyard chickens are quiet and do not produce any more waste than a small dog.

She repeatedly said that many in the county are already keeping chickens in their backyard, and chickens have a significant impact on the state’s agricultural output. Allowing backyard chickens could also help keep residents interested in agricultural jobs, Bartholomew said.

No one spoke against the ordinance at the April 15 meeting.

Commissioners approved a bevy of changes to the original proposal that have stemmed from several meetings of various boards and interested parties but did choose to leave out a suggestion made by the Planning Commission.

That language would have prohibited backyard chickens on any property under

an HOA covenant unless that covenant was not applicable or it specifically allowed keeping poultry on residential properties.

County Attorney Ken Jarrard expressed some “heartburn” over the language. He called it “well-intended,” but said it would present the county with a complex legal and technical issue by requiring the county delve into each property’s covenant. He added that some of that legal work could require the county to hire additional legal representatives, Commissioners Laura Semanson and Todd Levent each expressed that covenants are a private matter. Semanson said the county choosing to include the covenant language could lead to a slippery slope in the county being charged with enforcing HOA matters.

Public works veteran named to county post

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County announced David McKee will serve as its new assistant county manager.

In his role, McKee will oversee operations of the County’s Engineering, RecyMCKEE cling & Solid Waste, Fleet Services, Public Transportation and Public Facilities departments. He will also serve as the executive manager for all transportation related activities and responsibilities and will be the County’s key contact with the Georgia Department of Transportation.

McKee brings 15 years of county administration experience. He joined Dawson County in 2006, working in environmental compliance, engineering, GIS and planning. Since 2015 he served as Dawson County’s Public Works Director and SPLOST Administrator.

“Transportation solutions continue to be a focus for our community,” said County Manager Kevin Tanner.

“David has a proven track record of successful leadership positions in county government, including a background in managing transportation projects. I am confident he is the right fit for Forsyth County.”

McKee holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology from Georgia Southern University. He has attained an Advanced Certificate of Public Works Management from the University of Georgia Carl Vinson Institute of Government and American Public Works Association.

Deputies arrest suspect hours following break-in

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies arrested a man caught prowling outside a home along Sandown Court on April 11.

Michael Daniel Land, 25, of Cumming, was charged with firstdegree burglary and theft by taking.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a residence that had been burglarized earlier in the day. Someone reported a suspicious person lingering outside the home.

When officers arrived, they found Land lying in the grass across the street from the house. Deputies said he admitted that he broke in earlier in the day and swiped a ring that he planned to give his girlfriend.

Roswell Farmers and Artisans Market finds new home

By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Farmers and Artisans Market has moved to Roswell Presbyterian Church.

The market had been located at the City Hall grounds since 2010 when the city agreed to partner with market organizers, Market Manager Sherri Schreiner said.

Up till recently, the city had placed a moratorium on special event permits and in-person meetings because of the COVID pandemic.

“When we found out that we were not

going to be able to have our market this year, we were stunned,” Schreiner said.

“The reasons we got were COVID-related but didn’t make a lot of sense since we were allowed to operate last year.”

The city lifted the moratorium in March and began issuing event permits and holding in-person meetings this month.

Events not sponsored by the city can return, like the Roswell Farmers and Artisans Market. Schreiner could apply for a permit and would have to agree to all stipulations from the city, such as requiring masks, practicing social distancing and taking tempera-

tures, Community Relations Manager Julie Brechbill previously told The Herald.

“Since we were not really sure how things would turn out, I started brainstorming where the best place for our market to move [would be],” Schreiner said. “I made lots of calls and we started discussing it with Roswell Presbyterian Church.

They welcomed the idea with open arms.

They were excited, welcoming and it was a breath of fresh air.”

Schreiner said the market switched locations because a new positive relationship with the church was blossoming and

as the city seemed to no longer wish to partner with the farmers market.

“We were going to have to start paying for a permit fee and adhere to regulations that we had never had to before,” Schreiner said. “Since we are non-profit, we could not take on those costs. If we had to, we would have had to pass the cost onto our vendors.”

The Roswell Farmers and Artisans Market runs from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday from April to the end of October.

It is a producer-only market ,so all items must be grown or made within 100 miles of Roswell, Schreiner said.

Convention bureaus team up to promote craft brewery trail NORTH ATLANTA, Ga. — The destination marketing organizations behind Visit Roswell, Awesome Alpharetta and Visit Sandy Springs have announced the launch of the Topside Tap Trail.

The brewery trail includes seven branded breweries in metro Atlanta’s “topside,” in the cities of Roswell, Alpharetta and Sandy Springs. The trail was created to recognize North Fulton county’s craft beer culture.

Gate City Brewing, Roswell’s first brewing company, is located in Roswell’s Historic District. The name is rooted in neighboring Atlanta’s historical moniker as the “Gate City of the New South,” due to its reputation as a hub for culture, commerce and transportation. Gate City offers a large taproom filled with highboys, a long bar, and soft seating, with several garage doors that open to outdoor space with tons of picnic tables and a separate private event space.

Variant Brewing Company employs a collaborative approach and passion for the art of the brewing process to create experiential blends for the occasional beer drinker and craft beer enthusiast. Self-Advocacy and Second Opinions Brought to you by - Premier Dermatology and Mohs of Atlanta Second opinions can be invaluable. A study by the Mayo Clinic found that a diagnosis was changed or discovered in 21% of patients seeking a second opinion, and nearly 66% of all patients seeking a second opinion had their diagnosis refined. Receiving care for the wrong diagnosis or, more often, not receiving care for an undiagnosed issue can be life altering or sometimes even prove deadly.

Recently, a surprising number of patients have told me about experiences when their own initiative or a second opinion proved to be lifesaving.

One patient was told that an incidental finding of low platelets (thrombocytopenia) was dismissed by his first physician as likely of little consequence. This patient sought a second opinion, and a bone marrow biopsy identified leukemia and led to treatment. Another patient’s doctor told her that a mass could be watched and that since imaging was not necessary, it would not be covered by insurance. She paid out of her own pocket for a CT scan that identified the cancer that she suspected she had. Multiple other patients shared similar stories. And whereas this may come as a shock to some, it is, sadly, not surprising to me. Physicians are not infallible. I genuinely believe that

patients should be their own advocate.

Good physicians support their patients seeking additional professional opinions. In fact, my patients and I share similar stories because a second (fifth actually) opinion saved the life – or more accurately the quality and course of life – of my son: I count my blessings that my wife holds to her convictions and advocates for our family. Multiple “second” opinions at her insistence saved my oldest child from a lifetime of developmental struggles and unnecessary deafness.

Our oldest effectively stopped talking at about 14 months old. He never had a diagnosed or suspected ear infection.

And although he would eventually turn towards us when we called his name, my wife was convinced that he could not hear. She took him to multiple pediatricians and was repeatedly dismissed with the counsel that “boys will be boys” and “not everyone is a talker.” These were board-certified, well-trained physicians. Over the course of a year, his speech deteriorated from a dozen words at 14 months to only 2 words at 2 years old. A pediatric ENT, an audiologist and another pediatrician examined him and suggested autism, but when asked, they could not support their conclusions convincingly. The diagnosis just didn’t fit, as there were no other symptoms of

Finally, at our second pediatric ENT and audiology appointment, the audiologist determined that the way sound waves bounced back from his ear drums was not consistent with open, air-filled middle ears. Dr. Matthew Whitley (Pediatric Ear Nose and Throat of Atlanta) scheduled an appointment to place tubes in his ear drums and explore further. Shortly into the surgery, Dr. Whitley discovered that my son had “glue ear,” which is when a glue-like semisolid form behind the ear drum. Our son could hear sounds, which explains how he passed his first hearing test at one year old, but sounds were heard as if underwater, and he could not differentiate between many sounds which made speech unintelligible. Dr. Whitley inserted tubes, removed the glue-like material from our son’s middle ear and restored his hearing. Within one week our son went from speaking two words to twenty words. We were informed that in a case such as our son’s, it would likely have taken years for the glue ear to resolve on its own. Had we stuck with our first, second, third, or fourth opinion, our son would have been severely affected by

deafness (and thus speech) during critical developmental years.

As a Mohs surgeon, I have had many of my greatest successes in the field of skin cancer, oftentimes in the context of my serving as a second opinion. One patient was told by his previous Mohs surgeon that further surgery was not possible on his scalp, which was riddled with painful cancers. However, my patient and I selectively employed photodynamic therapy, 5-fluorouracil cream and Mohs surgery with skin grafts. His scalp is now healed and pain and cancer-free. Other patients have come to me with skin cancers dismissed by their previous dermatologists who assured them that a biopsy was not necessary. The most common scenario has been that of growths that the patients were reassured were cysts but that ultimately proved to be squamous cell carcinomas. Biopsies have often identified the presence of skin cancers that, if left untreated, could metastasize to other organ systems.

Perhaps most frustrating to my patients, innumerable individuals have come to me upset that at their previous practice they were never told that Mohs surgery is an option. Frequently, patients first see me when cancers treated elsewhere begin to regrow. Usually, these cancers were treated by a scrape and burn (ED&C), standard excision

or freezing by another doctor. Each of these methods is appropriate in certain circumstances, but what frustrated these patients is that they were not offered the choice of Mohs surgery.

Mohs surgery is a method of curing skin cancer by removing small pieces of tissue and checking the edges under the microscope until clear, cancer-free margins are obtained. Mohs surgery has the highest cure rate (usually 99%) of any procedure for the most common skin cancers and is considered the gold standard treatment for skin cancer on the head and neck.

Physicians have an obligation to present patients with the most reasonable treatment options, even when that treatment option is not available in their own practice. I sleep well at night knowing that I genuinely give my patients treatment that I would not necessarily pick for myself. My job is to present facts and to be a guide but not to choose for my patients. Just today, I saw a patient who was referred to me for Mohs surgery of a basal cell carcinoma on the lower edge of the nose. We reviewed his treatment options together.

He had never considered radiation therapy until I presented it as an alternative to Mohs surgery, and ultimately radiation therapy is what he selected.

Likewise, I occasionally have patients referred to me for Mohs surgery who select imiquimod cream instead of surgery

after I present it as a treatment option for certain types of basal cell carcinoma.

When non-surgical options exist, it is a surgeon’s responsibility to help educate a patient about treatment options worth considering.

Readers “supposably” like to make me cringe A few weeks ago, I asked readers to submit their (least) favorite mispronounced or misused words in response to Dictionary.com adding “supposably,” a mispronunciation of supposedly, to its dataJOE PARKER base. The response was Editor fantastic, and by that, joe@appenmedia.com I mean our readers might have been out to slightly torture me by forcing me to view all the wince-worthy words and phrases.

Looking at this snapshot of responses, it is abundantly clear that the most loathed, hated and cringe-inducing word of them all among those in North Fulton, Forsyth County and Dunwoody is “irregardless.”

Jan J. (real name: Jan Jay), put it succinctly: “Irregardless!!! Regardless of what people say, there is no such word!” she wrote.

Rich Lappin agreed.

“Irrespective and regardless of what other might say, irregardless is not a word,” Rich said. “Sadly, that has not prevented it from slipping into common usage.”

Joel Huey submitted one of my favorite misuses of an idiom — “I could care less.”

Saying “I could care less” implies that you do care, and totally goes against what people actually mean to say, “I couldn’t care less.”

As an example, I could care less about what deodorant I use. I’ve refused to wear anything other than Old Spice Pure Sport since puberty — that magical time in a man’s life when he hopes his particular smell, which is awful at the time no matter what deodorant he uses, will attract a mate despite him looking like a sporadically haired, acne-riddled genetic experiment gone wrong — but I don’t know why I’m so insistent on only using that brand.

Meanwhile, I couldn’t care less about any Royal baby, some mundane thing a Kardashian did or what deodorant brand you use, provided you’re at least wearing some kind if I’m standing close.

Another submission from Huey was the misnomer of “tin foil.” Foil, the kind you use to wrap leftovers in, throw in the back of the fridge and forget about until they have sprouted bacteria spores that appear to be from Mars, or the material used to make hats for QAnon believers, hasn’t been made of tin in over half a century. It’s

aluminum.

On the subject of food, a misuse that is particularly aggravating in the Parker household, and my wife’s submission, is “Shepard’s pie.” Shepard equals sheep, not beef. A “Shepard’s pie” with ground beef is cottage pie.

Pie Rankin, who has to be ranked as having one of the coolest names I’ve ever heard, takes issue with “safety deposit box.” I agree. A safe deposit box is, as the term suggests, a box within a safe you deposit items into. A “safety deposit box” sounds like a specialized container for shipping stool samples.

Several readers also took issue with those who say “heighth” instead of height.

Whenever I hear “heighth,” I go back to the time I was in college when several friends and I created a “Beer-lin Wall” with empty beer cans, and with our speech slurred by consuming the contents of our building materials, I’m sure we were impressed by its “heighth” and “bread, er, breadth.”

Dale Lewis said one of his favorite cringeworthy phrases is “for all intensive purposes,” a mispronunciation of “for all intents and purposes.”

That mispronounced phrase makes me imagine one of those look-at-how-tough-

our-truck-is commercials from Ram, Ford or Chevy where the grizzly voiced announced might say, “The new 2021 Buff Basher Bold Bigflank Butch Blowfist 1500 is, for all intents and purposes, the best truck for all intensive purposes.”

Audrey H. shared her list of annoying mispronunciations, including real-I-tor (when did realtor become a three syllable word, she wrote), come with (where is the rest of the sentence?) I borrowed him money (No, you loaned him money) and “esculate” instead of escalate, not to be confused with the Cadillac Escalade. Or is it the Esculade?

Charles Reny takes issue with people who say “probly,” using the example of, “I’m asking her to marry me and she’ll probly say yes.” Reny’s response: “probably not” if you can’t be bothered to use a word with more than two syllables.

Lucky for our future groom, better, worse, richer, poorer, sickness, health, love, cherish, till, death, do, us and part don’t include any three syllable words. But he’ll be in real trouble if his bride’s name is something like Samantha or, even worse, Elizabeth.
