CUMMING, Ga.— Officers responded to a call on March 13 at Northside Hospital Forsyth in response to two patients in the Emergency Department with gunshot wounds.

Authorities say the individuals, a 19-year old male and a 15-year old female, claimed to have been shot as they walked along Dahlonega Highway on their way home from a Cumming BP Station.

Authorities charge pair with entering autos FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Two men have been arrested in connection with attempting to enter autos in a south Forsyth neighborhood.

Deputies were called to Three Chimneys subdivision on March 9 regarding two individuals entering multiple automobiles. Authorities say Justin Joseph Bruno, 21, of Cumming, and Anthony Jeremiah Nasah, 20, of Suwanee, went

into an open garage on Woodward Way, unlocked a vehicle, and stole items from the vehicle.

Authorities say the pair also entered an open garage and took items from two vehicles parked inside a garage on Old Oak Trace. The suspects were unsuccessful in attempts to enter two other vehicles.

Bruno was arrested March 11 and charged with five counts of felony entering auto, one count felony attempted entering auto and one count felony burglary non-force. He has since been released from the Forsyth County jail on $35,180 bond.

Nasah was arrested March 13 and charged with first degree burglary– forced, and six counts of theft by entering automobile. He has been released on $33,290 bond.

Authorities investigate fraudulent checks FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Forsyth County woman alerted bank personnel to fraudulent activity in her checking account.

Authorities say a Regions Bank representative told the woman that a man had presented two checks from her account.

The victim had the checks in her possession, suggesting that the checks presented by the man were fraudulent.

Raymond Joseph Collier, 62, of Decatur, was arrested March 12 in connection with the incident and charged with two counts of identity fraud. He is being held in the Forsyth County jail without bond.

The man, Giovan Adrieo Kirkhart, 19, of Norcross, was arrested and charged with two counts possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana (less than 1 oz.), three counts possession of firearm or knife during commission of a felony, possession of drug-related objects and reckless conduct.

He remains in the Forsyth County jail under a $91,485 bond.

The juvenile was released to the custody of a parent.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County officials are implementing guidelines for operations during the ongoing coronavirus threat.

With three confirmed cases of COVID-19, county officials are updating the county’s website as needed.

Updates will also be provided on the county’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

Several departments are under limited access while others have been temporarily suspended.

The Board of Commissioners will continue regular meetings and public hearings, as well as meetings that are required due to ordinance processes. Monthly meetings by various boards, commissions and authorities are under review.

Fingerprinting and background checks for alcohol permits, alcohol licenses, and firearm licenses have been suspended by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office effective March 17. The Forsyth County Business License Department will be unable to process alcohol sales permits until further notice.

The county has also suspended a series of community courses, such as Citizens Law Enforcement Academy and women’s self-defense classes. Precinct and jail public lobbies will remain open as needed, but sheriff’s staff is asking residents limit visits and use phone services. There is a temporary suspension of outside organization programs at the jail and family visitation for inmates.

First case of COVID-19 confirmed in Forsyth County

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Public Health announced the first confirmed case of coronavirus disease in Forsyth County on March 16.

“The patient was seen and tested at Northside Hospital Forsyth, was not admitted, then sent home per CDC guidelines to self-monitor,” Katherine Watson, Northside Hospital spokesperson said.

In wake of the announcement, Forsyth County Commission Chairwoman Laura Semanson issued a brief statement: “This morning we received confirmation from public health that there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 in Forsyth County. We are keeping this individual, their family and those caring for the individual in our thoughts and prayers.”

Semanson said the county continues to follow the most up-to-date guidance from local, state and federal health officials. Any updates regarding impacts to county facilities and services will be posted to the county website, she said.

The second case was confirmed the next day.

The Georgia Department of Public Health provides a daily status report showing confirmed cases of the illness.

The latest figures available show Forsyth County with three confirmed cases of the disease.

State of emergency declared for Forsyth

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga.—Forsyth County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Laura Semanson declared a state of emergency in Forsyth County March 18.

“By declaring a State of Emergency, the county will be able to utilize personnel and financial resources to proactively ensure the safety of county residents,” said Semanson.

Semanson stood with public safety leaders and told the county that by declaring a State of Emergency it will allow the county “to move into a more proactive stance to be able to combat the threat of COVID-19” in Forsyth County.

“The intention of stating a state of emergency is for us to be more reactive, more responsive and to be able to act nimbly and quickly and be able to shift our resources whether they be personnel or finances to address problems as they present,” Semanson said.

Sheriff Ron Freeman stressed that the declaration is “simply giving us [Forsyth County public safety leaders] additional authorities,” adding that his office will now be looking at instances of price gouging.

“It is simply a change in the normal course of business of how your government works to allow us to better respond to any needs our community has regarding the needs of the current crisis,” Freeman said.

Forsyth County Emergency Management, County Fire and the County Commission are prepared to provide residents with necessary services, Freeman said.

Cumming restricts public access, plans closings

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — City of Cumming leaders issued a statement March 17 announcing a temporary restriction of public access to all city buildings and facilities.

The temporary restriction became effective March 18 and will remain in effect until March 31.

City leaders made the decision, they said, out of an abundance of caution for the safety.

The decision follows recommendations from national health organizations

such as the Centers for Disease Control.

“Developing and implementing changes such as these is a tough balancing act,” Mayor Troy Brumbalow said. “We are a public entity, owing our existence to our citizens, and restricting access for them is a difficult step.”

City leaders have a responsibility to guarantee a safe workplace for our employees and a greater responsibility to our state and nation as a whole to do all we can to control the spread of this virus that is making its way across our country, Brumbalow said.

“Hopefully these will be short-term

changes. We will be reassessing every day and keeping in touch with our employees and the public as we try to do the right thing for all concerned,” he said.

The city has taking additional steps to reduce employee exposure.

All departments will remain staffed and operational, but city business will be conducted by phone and electronically. Public access to city buildings will be restricted to appointments only and to necessary in-person meetings.

All in-person meetings are to be changed to phone or video conferencing, if possible.

All Cumming utility payments can be paid by phone, online or in the utilities night deposit box in the City Hall parking lot, across from the main entrance doors.

City officials also announced the Cumming Municipal Court would be closed at least through April 15.

Utilities, businesses waive late fees, disconnections

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Service providers Georgia Power, Comcast and AT&T are giving customers a break as financial strains become another symptom the COVID-19.

Georgia Power has suspended its cutoff policy for 30 days and will then reevaluate.

Comcast is offering free access to its Xfinity WiFi hotspots. Everyone, including nonsubscribers, can take advantage of the 60-day offer. New customers are given 60 days of free basic internet service. The cable company is also providing unlimited data to customers at no additional charge. It is not charging late fees or disconnecting services for those who can’t pay their bills.

Comcast is not the only business suspending shutoffs. AT&T is also suspending the termination of its wireless, home phone or broadband services when customers are financially strapped due to coronavirus disruptions. Late fees will also be waived, the company said.

AT&T is also providing free access to its public Wi-Fi hot spots. Consumer home internet wireline customers and fixed wireless internet customers would receive unlimited data, the company said.

Phone service providers Verizon and T-Mobile are also offering help. Verizon said it is waiving late fees and suspending service termination for those customers “negatively impacted by the global crisis.”

Meanwhile, T-Mobile said it is providing unlimited data to all current customers who have plans with data

for the next 60 days, and it will also provide additional data to mobile hotspot users.

Charter Communication is providing free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi internet for the next 60 days to households with K-12 students or college students who don’t already have a subscription. It’s also offering its Wi-Fi hot spots for free to the public.

Atlanta Gas Light has suspended its shutoffs for seven days and is using that time to evaluate its options.

For those students stranded at college and residential learning institutions, Enterprise, the car rental company, announced that it is reducing the minimum age for renting a vehicle to 18 through the end of May “to make it easier for students to get home to their families” due to the suspension of college courses.

Sanitation companies crucial in eliminating spread of COVID-19

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Many people are now working from home as employers try to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Not many off-site employees, however, are considering the ramifications of their curbside trash.

Red Oak Sanitation, service provider for thousands of Forsyth County customers, implemented precautionary measures.

Red Oak services over 30,000 residential customer per day. This scale of contact carries risk and responsibility.

“The sanitation industry is on the front line as it handles, transports and disposes of the waste from every individual,” Red Oak spokesman Tim Citrone said.

Each individual has their own standards of hygiene and at times like this, it exposes the sanitation employee to the high risk of contracting and spreading any virus if proper procedures are not followed, Citrone said.

The Gainesville, Ga.-based company shared its protocol for best practices to keep employees and customers safe.

The company issued a statement last week saying the protocols are designed to limit common surface contact with the virus, and eliminate spreading it from customer to employee, and from employee to customer.

“No one wants to be staring into a reality where there are no longer any sanitation workers healthy enough to provide waste removal,” the statement said. “Sanitation is one of the few necessary services that must remain operational to help avoid further public health

The company strongly suggests all trash and recycling be put in bags and tied before placing in the carts to eliminate loose debris being left in containers or on the ground. The company is also asking each resident spray to disinfect their trash containers before handling them once emptied, Citrone said.

Locally owned Sanitation Solutions has not announced any recent change in policies, and Advance Disposal did not reply to requests for its updated service protocols.

All recreation center programs, athletic leagues, school field trips and outdoor programs are cancelled or postponed. The Sawnee Mountain Preserve Public Input meeting on March 26 is cancelled.

Outdoor park areas and trails are open and Shady Grove Campground is also open.

The Georgia Secretary of State announced that the March 24 Presidential Preference Primary has been postponed until May 19.

Votes already cast in person and by absentee ballot for the March 24 Presidential Preference Primary will be counted. Advance voting ended March 14 and will resume April 2020.

All senior centers are closed through March 29, with a planned reopening date of March 30. The annual Senior Expo, scheduled for April 18, has been postponed.

The County Tax Commissioner’s office locations are temporarily closed. Matters will be handled by mail, phone or email, Tax Commissioner Matthew Ledbetter said.

All branches of the Forsyth County Public Library are closed.

Books are due back April 6, regardless of previous due dates.

All other departments within county government are working under regular operations.

Hospitals prepare for possible influx of patients

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com METRO ATLANTA, Ga. — Atlanta area hospitals are eliminating elective surgery and turning their attention to accommodate testing and treatment for patients of the COVID-19 virus.

Right now, the state is scrambling to make testing services available to health care providers, and some drive-thru testing is available in Atlanta and other regions of the state.

Gov. Brian Kemp announced efforts are underway to expand drive-thru testing.

For now, testing at most drive-thru facilities is limited to the most vulnerable: the elderly and those with compromised immune systems or respiratory conditions.

Locally, spokeswoman Katherine Watson said testing and treatment for the coronavirus is available at Northside Hospital Atlanta on Johnson Ferry Road and at Northside Forsyth in Cumming.

“We are working closely with the Georgia Department of Public Health to ensure proper clinical management of any patient who comes to one of our Emergency Departments exhibiting coronavirus symptoms,” Watson said. “Our Infection Control specialists and clinical leadership are implementing a coordinated and comprehensive plan to handle infectious disease patients, adhering to the CDC’s recommendations and guidelines for prevention, surveillance and treatment.”

Alysia Satchel, spokeswoman for Emory Johns Creek Hospital said Emory Healthcare is in the process of rolling out a frequently asked questions service to provide the latest information about

testing and treatment at its facilities.

Emory could be poised to take the lead on testing. Just last week, the Swiss pharma company Roche said it would provide Emory its lab supplies to process about 200 test kits per day.

Another large presence in the region, WellStar Health System hospitals have been rolling out safeguards and initiatives in the past weeks in anticipation of more positive coronavirus cases.

“We can confirm that WellStar Health System is equipped to screen, test and treat patients diagnosed with COVID-19,” spokeswoman Patricia Nicolas said. “It is important to note that patients must meet specific criteria to be considered for testing and should contact their primary care provider before

visiting a medical facility if possible.”

As numbers climb, WellStar has been erecting tents at some facilities to serve as temporary extensions of emergency departments.

“This helps us prepare to respond to the growing surge of patients visiting our emergency departments for symptoms, which may be associated with flu, strep, pneumonia and other common respiratory issues,” Nicolas said. “The tents are not for walk-up COVID-19 testing.”

All 11 of WellStar’s facilities are still open under normal business hours, and the organization is also working to head off any potential problems with overcrowding or overworking staff, an issue that has hit hard for some medical centers across the world.

“We are monitoring our staffing levels and supply chain on a daily basis to make sure we have adequate, contin-

ued access to personnel needed to care for patients, as well as materials and equipment,” Nicolas said. “WellStar is also prepared to draw on its network of expert physicians, health professionals and facilities across our health system for support, as needed.”

WellStar has created a 24/7 Coronavirus/COVID-19 Caregiver & Workforces Helpline to provide accurate and updated information about the work-related COVID-19 issues for medical staff. It has also activated a crisis care program for employees with caretaking needs for children, elders and pets. Team members are reimbursed for any crisis care arranged with anyone outside of WellStar’s network, Nicolas said.

“WellStar caregivers are the heroes of our health system and community,” she said. “They are on the frontlines day and night, caring for people in their time of need. Every single caregiver performs selfless, compassionate and vital work that saves lives. We are thankful for each and every one.”

WellStar is restricting entrances and is screening visitors at its hospitals, health parks, urgent care centers, ambulatory offices and long-term care facilities. It is also suspending social visitation. Anyone under 18 will not be allowed to visit patients.

Limited visitation is still allowed in some cases, such as emergency or surgery patients or laboring and postpartum patients.

One of the biggest challenges now, Nicolas said, is educating the public on self-care, containing the virus through social isolation and to reach out to healthcare providers if the symptoms worsen.

Local YMCAs to offer childcare for healthcare workers

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH GEORGIA — YMCA of Metro Atlanta facilities are closed to the public but will still provide a much-needed service amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The organization announced last week it will offer childcare for healthcare workers, and plans are in place to begin the service in Alpharetta and Forsyth County.

The service will be available to several Atlanta area hospitals, including the Northside and WellStar systems.

Lauren Koontz, CEO of the YMCA of Metro Atlanta, said the organization is “repurposing” to provide services that will critical in the coming weeks.

“In many ways this is our moment to truly deliver on our promise of service to

those who turn to us for community and to those who turn to us for survival,” Koontz said.

The Y plans to begin offering childcare at the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta YMCA this week with plans to roll out the service at the Forsyth County Family YMCA. “When there is a need, the Y fills that need,” Allison Toller, chief social impact officer with YMCA of Metro Atlanta said.

“The healthcare industry and its workers are being stretched, so who is there to take care their children? This is a way to ease that burden.”

Childcare will be available from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. for kids aged 3- to 12-years old. Toller said the metro Atlanta Y system has the capacity to take care of over 2,000 children.

“While we realized we needed to

close for the health and safety of the community, we still have the opportunity to be there for our community,” Toller said.

The partnership between the hospitals and the organization will also allow Y employees to continue working while normal operations are suspended. The hospitals offering childcare to employees are either covering the cost of the service or working out a fee structure. “[Childcare] is something we want to provide, and with the Y being closed, our revenue model is being drastically shifted, and the revenue from those hospitals is critical,” Toller said.

In addition to providing childcare for healthcare workers and first responders dealing with COVID-19, some metro Atlanta Y locations will also provide assurance to those facing food insecurity.

Toller said as the Y works to assist the metro Atlanta community, some are asking how they can lend a hand to the organization.

“We imagine there is going to be a need for resources, and already we have been asked by companies in the area how they can help,” Toller said. “We would urge people to contact their local Y and see if there are ways they can help, either financially or in-kind. There are going to be needs, and we ask the community to support us.”

The organization also wants its members to stick with the Y amid the coronavirus shutdown.

“We ask our members stay with us,” Toller said. “While the services we provide members are on hold, we hope they continue to be members and support what we are doing.”

Forsyth Schools launches meal services for students

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Given the extended closure of schools across Georgia and possibility of food scarcity, Forsyth County Schools has developed three options for student and family meals.

The first option is a drive-thru service in which meals are brought to cars at Sawnee Elementary and Whitlow Elementary schools from noon to 1 p.m. The service is open to all students between the ages of pre-school to 18 who attend public and private schools. Those in special needs are eligible up to age 21. Students will receive lunch for the day and breakfast for the following day.

The service is available weekdays only.

The second option is a delivery service which will run Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There are seven routes covering areas designated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as “eligible,” where 50 percent or more of its residents are eligible for meal benefits. Lunch for the day and breakfast for the following day will be provided. The service provides dropoffs to neighborhoods only, and you can view locations and stop times at the district’s website, forsyth.k12. ga.us/.

The third option is the Mobile Pantry Service, a partnership with The Place of Forsyth County. It is available to anyone in Forsyth County. The Mobile Pantry Service runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will provide shelf-stable groceries at Cumming Elementary School on Mondays, Brandywine Elementary

Crossover Day ends with suspension of 2020 session over coronavirus Path of most bills set by end of critical day

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA – Crossover Day in the General Assembly began March 12 under a coronavirus cloud, with unusually empty hallways and whispers of an early close to the session. Within hours the rumors became truth with the decision to suspend the 2020 session until further notice to limit exposure and spread of the virus.

In the waning hours on Crossover Day, legislators went to work winnowing down the long list of pending legislation, selecting those that will remain viable this session.

Legislative rules require bills to pass their originating chamber – House or Senate – by end of Crossover Day to be considered for passage in the current session. The day generally occurs on the 30th day of the 40-day session.

Bills which fail to pass on Crossover Day could still find relevance as amendments attached to active bills – known as “Christmas tree” bills.

Among the high-profile bills that “crossed over” was Senate Bill 386 which expanded the special needs voucher to more students. The law, first passed in 2007, allows parents of eligible students with special needs to receive a tuition voucher for a private school.

SB 386 would allow any student who has a plan in place that allows special accommodations in the regular classroom, commonly referred to as a 504

plan, to be eligible for a voucher.

Education advocates across the state rallied against the bill, noting a 504 plan is relatively simple to obtain, and the law would allow state tax dollars to subsidize a private education with limited guard rails.

“At a time when we are cutting dual enrollment, REACH scholarships, the supplement to new math and science teachers, etc., why would we expand an entitlement to private school?” asked Angela Palm, legislative director for the Georgia School Boards Association.

Last year the special needs voucher directed $33 million in public funds to private schools for tuition, she noted. In addition, the state provided $100 million in income tax credits from donations to student scholarship organizations tied to private schools.

“For fiscal year 2020, the state is spending at least $321 million to provide school choice for parents [and] $133 million of that went to private schools,” Palm said. “And now [legislators] want to expand this entitlement.”

Another prominent bill that successfully navigated Crossover Day is SB 423, “The Max Gruver Act,” which increases the prison time for anyone involved in the death or serious injury of a Georgia college student. It was dedicated to Gruver, a Roswell resident, who died last year during a hazing event at a Louisiana university.

Bills that were not able to muster the support to make the crossover deadline included: SB 343 – Raises the age of mandatory education from 16 to 17 SB 398 – Prohibits the assignment of graded homework for students in grades K-2 SB 486 – Requires all public schools to administer the SAT or the ACT to students in grade 11 HB 1055 – The “Tim Tebow” Act which allows home study students to participate in extracurricular and interscholastic activities in the student’s zoned public school.

The 2020 session had been set to end on April 2, but that date will likely be moved to the middle of the month at the earliest. Complicating matters is the upcoming primary election on May 19 in which every House and Senate seat in the Georgia General Assembly is on the ballot.

State law prohibits legislators from fundraising while in session, although their challengers are free to do so. Of the 180 House seats, 114 are contested races. Among the 56 Senate seats, 41 are challenged.

Agencies draw up plans to assist residents

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Local and state agencies met March 16 to formulate a plan to serve Forsyth County residents facing layoffs and food insecurity.

United Way of Forsyth County Executive Director Ruth Goode hosted a meeting of local programs and food pantries to coordinate efforts. The meeting included some who attended in person and others who joined on conference call.

“This is an unprecedented time,” Goode said at the meeting, held at United Way’s office in Cumming. “We have never lived through something like this.”

Goode encouraged everyone to stay strong and positive.

“The United Way motto is ‘united we fight, united we win,’” she said.

The purpose of the meeting was to address where agencies and organizations are needed the most and begin an organized effort for food distribution, Goode said. Collectively, “we will have the most impact in our community,” she said.

Among the topics discussed to help those individuals was home deliveries, including Meals on Wheels and Meals by Grace. Meals on Wheels has modified its deliveries to provide a week’s worth of frozen meals supplemented by food bank items.

“We’ll still be working to serve older adults in need no matter how bad the COVID situation may get,” Forsyth County Senior Services Executive Director Ruthie Brew said.

Meals by Grace, on the other hand, is serving 75 families, pre-selected by FCS social workers. The Place of Forsyth County is delivering 20 hot meals to seniors weekly, with extra groceries for the weekend.

Goode asked the organizations to share their inventory with one another and use Charity Tracker as a means of communication which will enable them to work effectively and efficiently to serve the community.

Businesses scramble to adapt as customers keep their distance

Some have been hit harder than others. And some are taking novel approaches to their business model, observing heightened protocols to ward against the spread of the deadly coronavirus virus.

On March 18, Gov. Brian Kemp announced that Georgia has received an official statewide disaster declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration that will provide Economic Injury Disaster Loans to impacted small businesses in all 159 counties in Georgia.

Kim Eells, senior vice president of SBA Business Development at Georgia Primary Bank, said Georgia has been added as a declared state for Coronavirus Disaster Loan Assistance with the SBA. Businesses that have been adversely affected by COVID-19 may now apply for Disaster Assistance directly with the SBA, no banks involved, Eells said. These loans are up to $2,000,000, up to 30-year term, fixed rate of 3.75 percent. You can apply online at sba. gov/disaster.

While that aid is welcome news to the thousands of small businesses in north Metro Atlanta, business owners are adapting in other ways.

Restaurants have been closing or are turning to take-out options.

Ryan Pernice, owner of Table & Main and Osteria Mattone in Roswell, and Coalition Food and Beverage in Alpharetta, says they’ve had to change their entire business model.

“It was pretty much as if someone had flipped a switch about two weeks ago,” he said. “All of a sudden, we reached the tipping point with the news and the sound and fury surrounding this, and revenue just fell off a cliff...

It just didn’t make sense to stay open anymore.”

To adapt, Pernice has combined the most popular dishes from his restaurants into one menu, from which people can order for take-out from his only open restaurant: Osteria Mattone.

He said he worries about his staff.

“Everyone is very concerned with their jobs,” Pernice said. “We’ve got

“Even just positivity online will help us,” he said. “For your favorite restaurant, share their menu, talk about the to-go options, a word of encouragement helps.”

Finding employment, helping out Those looking for a job can still find support during the pandemic.

The popular Roswell United Methodist Church Networking program, which meets every other week, has moved online.

The program regularly sees 200-300 people seeking job-hunting advice, companionship and leads.

Organizers launched a program March 23 providing online workshops

through Zoom and/or Webex. The service provides instructions for participation in the coming days along with updates at RUMCjobnetworking.com.

At the same time, some Roswell restaurants have stepped in to address food security concerns for students.

Mike Thomas, owner of Wild Slice Pizzeria in Roswell and his wife Cristy, a special needs kindergarten teacher at Esther Jackson Elementary School, started a school meal program that provides food for students in need while supporting local restaurants.

“Purchase gift cards to participating restaurants and donate the value to a school meal distribution program,” the couple said. “The restaurant prepares healthy meal options based on the amount of gift cards purchased. Volunteers pick up the meals and distribute them to the students in need.”

Several area restaurants are participating, including Gracious Plenty Bakery & Breakfast, PURE Taqueria, From the Earth Brewing Company, Big Oak Tavern and American Pasta Factory.

“What we’re doing, and most regional chambers are doing, is putting together guides that are an amalgam of all the different resources available to business,” she said.

When the Small Business Administration announced its $2 million in disaster recovery loans, she said the chamber immediately sent out the information along with a list of local banks who are preferred SBA lenders.

Boatright said Georgia Commute Options has moved up its commuting webinar series. Many small businesses, she said, have never explored telecommuting, and the chamber is distributing the information to help some businesses adapt and stay in operation, she said.

The primary concern of businesses across the board, she said, is the health and safety of their operations and their employees. Also of concern is the loss of employee incomes.

“That would be immediately devastating, not just to the employee and to the business, but to the entire community’s economics,” she said.

Boatright said she includes her cell phone number with her emails, and she has gotten plenty of calls.

“The idea is that I’m listening to our members and I’m able to see what it is they’re concerned about and what it is that they need [is important],” she said.

There are some steps the community can take to help out, she said.

She suggested people buy gift cards that can be used as a later date to help businesses through the tough times.

Another idea is to patronize businesses that may be struggling, like getting your car serviced.

“I’m going to do that now because I think that small business could use that support,” she said. “Certainly, if we’re all thoughtful about it, then we’re going to be able to make it through together.

That’s the goal.”

Addicted skin – Does your skin have a habit?

By DR. BRENT TAYLOR Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Many people assume that medications that do not require a prescription are relatively harmless. Over the Counter (OTC) DR. TAYLOR medications include drugs like acetaminophen (Tylenol®), ibuprofen, aspirin, and, in dermatology, hydrocortisone.

Given the current opioid epidemic, almost everyone is aware of the dangers of abusing prescription drugs, but I have found that a fair number of my patients have caused themselves harm with some very common OTC medications.

Medications like Tylenol have a lower therapeutic window meaning that the toxic dose is not much higher than the recommended daily dose. A toxic does of Tylenol causes liver failure.

Other medications like aspirin can cause stomach ulcers and bleeding when taken in abundance. In dermatology, the over the counter medication with which patients often have the most problems is hydrocortisone. It is present in numerous medications including Cortizone-10® and some types of Preparation H® as well as eczema and itch-relief creams. Hydrocortisone is a topical steroid.

Steroids are wonder drugs in medicine. Before steroids were available, many diseases were a death sentence or at least a sentence to a life of pain and disability. Steroids suppress the immune system broadly. They have the ability to treat patients with diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and a host of other autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Steroids are also “dirty drugs” in the sense that they carry a host of side effects ranging from increased risk of cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetes to osteoporosis, trouble sleeping, anger issues and the list goes on. Nowadays, medications with fewer side effects are available, but steroids remain indispensable in many circumstances.

When used on the skin, topical steroids are also a mixed blessing. They are amazing at helping with poison ivy and are still the go-to medication for most cases of eczema and many nonspecific itchy rashes. However, topical steroids used chronically will thin the skin, cause easy bruising, stretch marks and fragile skin. And even a few days of applying topical steroids to the face

can sometimes lead to “addicted skin,” that breaks out in acne-like lesions or rashes whenever someone stops using the topical steroid. If someone unwittingly uses hydrocortisone on the face, he or she may develop a case of perioral dermatitis or steroid acne that can take weeks or months of oral antibiotics and other topical medications to quiet down and control.

Another pitfall of topical steroids like hydrocortisone is their potential to make infections worse. Because steroids suppress the immune system, conditions of inappropriate immune activation like eczema and poison ivy rashes get better with steroids. Unfortunately, infections can get worse because we rely on an intact immune system to fight bacteria, yeast and viruses. If that rash you thought was eczema turns out to be fungus, then putting a steroid on it can allow the fungus to grow. Certain medicated lip balms contain hydrocortisone and cause viral outbreaks. Again, topical steroids suppress the immune system.

So, if someone has ever had the “cold sore” virus HSV-1 (which between half and two thirds of the population has), then applying a topical steroid can allow the virus to reactivate and cause more frequent and worse cold sore outbreaks.

Likewise, I have seen many cases recently of parents putting hydrocortisone on their children’s eczema in the setting of a molluscum infection, and the molluscum has spread and become very severe.

A final important note: topical steroids generally do not cure anything – they merely control certain diseases.

Whenever possible, it is important to identify the underlying cause of the disease so that it can be addressed. Protecting the seniors who protected us The American lifestyle has vastly changed in the past month. COVID-19 is now a global pandemic causing a feeling of uncertainty. While the virus has closed down schools, businesses, and events, it most severely impacts the elderly. Seniors like Warren Holder, who have fought in wars and lived through historic moments, are at a greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Village Park Senior Living would like to emphasize the important role every person in the local community plays in protecting the seniors who protected us.

Warren Holder was born in 1925, during a time of uncertainty. He was one of 13 children growing up in an orphanage. At the age of 17, he joined the Navy to serve his country during World War II. He soon became one of the first black officers and served as a Frogman (predecessor to Navy Seals).

As a Navy Frogman, Holder swam through the ocean to disarm underwater mines. The dangerous task often placed him in harm’s way. One incident in the Pacific Theater nearly led to him losing his leg. He also faced continuous adversity and prejudices as a black officer in the World War II era.

His achievements can be seen

through the many medals and awards he has been given, including a Purple Heart. Throughout his lifetime, he has protected future generations and his experiences have since turned into wisdom.

At the age of 94, Warren Holder remains compassionate and uses his experiences to inspire others. Every Friday, he speaks to other veterans about overcoming the hardships of war and coping with the residual impacts.

Warren’s story is just one of the many amazing stories of bravery, selflessness, and sacrifice that older Americans have made for future generations. GHSA: No decision on sports until schools are back in session

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The GHSA will not consider resuming the halted spring sports season until schools are back in session, a spokesman for the organization said. With the statewide closure of all public and private schools, high school sports are suspended until at least March 31.

Steve Figueroa, GHSA media director, said the organization will have no further comment until after the school shutdown has ended.

“If at that point in time schools resume, we will make plans then,” he said. “But only then. It is pointless for us to discuss plans now when we do not even know if

schools will start back March 31 or when they might start back afterwards.”

The spring sports season — which includes baseball, lacrosse, soccer, golf, track and field, gymnastics and tennis — was put on hold for all Fulton County Schools March 13. Soon after, Forsyth County Schools and all local private institutions also suspended after school activities, including sports.

On March 16, Gov. Brian Kemp announced all elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools would be closed statewide until March 31. Though local schools were already closed, Kemp’s decision led to the statewide suspension of all high school sports.

ment what would likely be a highly expedited schedule. Under the organization’s schedule, tennis, soccer and baseball are set to complete the regular season the week of April 16. The golf and lacrosse seasons are scheduled to end April 25 and May 5, respectively.

The regular season for some spring sports had yet to reach the halfway point when the schools closure began. Most local baseball and soccer teams have played only a handful of region games.

COVID-19 has all but shut down the sports landscape across much of the globe. Locally, the virus spurred the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament Final Four slated for Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Masters in Augusta and the NASCAR Solution race weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
