FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash on Feb. 6 on Canton Highway near the Spot Road Connector.

Authorities found Christina Marie Steffen, 59, of Cameron Court, Cumming, in the driver’s seat of the vehicle on the side of the road. Her husband, Daehn Keith Steffen, also 59, was in the passenger seat. Deputies learned that Daehn Steffen was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Suspected car thief identified on cameras FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities say a Cumming man took a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox from the owner’s driveway on Jan. 11. The Equinox was located a short time later, parked in the same neighborhood and had slight damage to the passenger side.

Authorities identified and located the suspect through the use of neighborhood Ring cameras. He was identified as Scott Warman, Jr., 19, of East Hills Court, Cumming. Warman was arrested Feb. 5 and charged with theft by taking and theft entering an automobile. He remains in the Forsyth County jail on a $22,845 bond.

Car stunt victim arrested on warrant FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies responded to a medical call on Windermere Crossing on Feb. 4 and discovered that the victim was wanted on a felony warrant.

Authorities said Dquan Jameel Usher, 23, of Wollaston Road, Cumming, was injured after riding on top of a friend’s vehicle. Usher had a felony

and it was determined that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and he was placed under arrest,” For syth County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Stacie Miller said.

The report also states that Christina, who was in the driver’s seat when deputies arrived, was investigated for DUI. She was also arrested for DUI after deputies learned she had attempted to get the truck out of the ditch prior to their arrival on scene.

Drug & DUI arrests Ivan Ramirez Paramo, 28, of Magnolia Place, Cumming, was arrested Feb. 3 for DUI–alcohol and failure to maintain lane.

Orlando, Diaz Cortes, 32, of Magnolia Place, Cumming, was arrested Feb. 3 for public drunkenness.

Marjorie Kathleen Carter, 70, of Bransford Drive, Cumming, was arrested Feb. 3 for DUI–alcohol and failure to maintain lane.

Charles Preston Todaro, 24, of Summit Overlook Way, Cumming, was arrested on Feb. 4 for possession of heroin and possession of drugrelated objects.

Theodore Julius Percevecz, 59, of Meadowgrove Lane, Gainesville, was arrested Feb. 8 for DUI–alcohol, failure to obey stop sign and vehicle defective or no headlights.

Cristian Castro-vega, 22, of Sharon Lane, Alpharetta, was arrested Feb. 8 for DUI–alcohol, possession of open container by driver, failure to maintain lane, failure to obey traffic control device and driving without a valid license.

Jeffery Scott Smith, Jr., 26, of Estuary Trail, Alpharetta, was arrested on Feb. 8 for DUI–alcohol, expired or no license plate decal and failure to maintain lane.

Melissa J Read, 42, of Bronze Oak Way, Cumming, was arrested Feb 9 for DUI–alcohol and failure to obey traffic control device. she returned to her home on Rexford Lane and saw a man in her home.

The woman had returned home around 7 p.m., and when she entered the house, she saw the man run out her back door.

Police cleared the house and found that the glass of the back door had been broken.

The woman did a quick inventory of her belongings and said nothing appeared to be missing.

County’s first snowfall: here today, gone tomorrow

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Residents of Forsyth County awoke to snow Feb. 8 and by mid-day Mother Nature had covered the area with several inches of the white powder.

The snow didn’t last long, but it made a big impression for one young resident.

For Darian Domiguez it was his first experience with the white powder.

“It was great!” said the 9-year old who moved to Forsyth from Arizona earlier this year.

He got the full experience, from having a snowball fight to building a snowman to pelting an unsuspecting reporter with a snowball.

“He wanted to get up at 1 this morning, when the snow was expected, and see if it was falling,” his grandmother Jan Dominguez said.

The two were walking Maui, their 3-year old dog Saturday morning. Darian was scooping snow from the tops of mailboxes, creating a massive snowball, which later became the base of his first snowman.

He took the flurries in good spirit, as did his buddies who were helping.

“I’m glad to see snow, honestly,” he said. “I grew up in Europe, and when it snowed, it snowed. It doesn’t look like this is going to be much.”

The plan was to load stuff first, then organize it once inside the truck.

“We’ll try and have as much fun as we can,” Demeeter said. “We’ve already thrown a couple of snowballs. We may leave a snow angel when we leave.”

Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman took to Facebook and posted a statement that his office was working 14

wrecks and there are dozens of stranded cars all over the county.

He wrote that travel conditions “stink,” are dangerous and “unless you’re going to the hospital, it just isn’t worth it.”

Jason Shivers, division chief, Technical Services, for the Forsyth County Fire Department said the department “stayed very quiet the entire day.”

“Since the weather occurred on a Saturday, traffic was a non-issue as everyone seemed to stay at home,” Shivers said. “We didn’t respond to any major accidents and had no fires.”

As the weather predictions aired, the Georgia Department of Transportation began prepping roadways.

“We went on 12-hour shifts Saturday at 7 a.m. and used brine and salt to pretreat bridges and overpasses,” Katie Strickland, GDOT-District 1 spokeswoman said. “We continued to deploy folks district-wide until Sunday mid-day when temperatures returned above freezing.”

Temperatures rose during the day but dipped below freezing Saturday night, leaving behind black ice. A sunny and warm Sunday helped melt the snow and by Monday morning it was back to normal for Forsyth County.

County to consider new special-needs ballfield at Lanierland Park

By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH, Ga. — Forsyth County commissioners will consider plans Feb. 25 for a new therapeutic ballfield in north Forsyth that will accommodate special needs athletes.

The county’s Parks and Recreation Board voted unanimously Feb. 7 to present the plans to the board after meetings with county staff and members of the Cumming Forsyth Miracle League Board of Directors.

The issue arose recently when projected road changes near Coal Mountain Park sparked concern among Miracle League Board members over the possible

New roadways could impact Miracle League players and families during games and other events at the park, said Steve Kirby, president of the Cumming Forsyth Miracle League Board. The organization brought its concerns, along with requests for updates to the existing structure, to county officials.

Kirby said meetings with county staff and officials proved fruitful.

“Originally they weren’t going to do anything,” he said.

at Lanierland Park, about 6 miles away on Jot ’em Down Road.

To draw more details, Mills, Commission Chairwoman Laura Semanson and Parks and Recreation Director Jim Pryor visited Cherokee County’s Patriots Park, which has a facility to accommodate special needs athletes.

Lanierland Park currently has a fully accessible playground that provides more and better equipment than currently available at Coal Mountain, Kirby said. Lanierland also has more ball fields and restroom facilities than those available at Coal Mountain.

“We’re excited,” Kirby said. “It’s just not as convenient.”

The new ballfield would be an advanced turf material that is fully wheelfriendly, provides a much more realistic baseball experience, drains quickly and is less heat reflective, Kirby said.

“We want to make wise decisions with taxpayer money,” Kirby said. “It’s not the county’s money, it’s the taxpayer’s money.”

The turf would allow the field to be use by other teams, creating an allinclusive atmosphere, but would be reserved for the Miracle League during scheduled games and events.

“The more people who understand the special needs community, the more they will accept them,” Kirby said. “We don’t want to separate, we want to associate.”

If approved by commissioners, the new field would open in 2022. The existing field at Coal Mountain Park would be converted to a dirt field.

“We realize change is not always easy,” Kirby said. “The current field, all those who helped bring it into existence, has served our special needs community well, and we will remain grateful. We are particularly grateful for those who blazed that trail.”

Carroll Edge was the impetus for the original ballfield, Kirby said. He remains a staunch and relentless supporter.

Kirby has been involved with the local Miracle League since 2008, starting as treasurer and becoming board president in 2018. The Coal Mountain community was the sole area willing to accept the Miracle League ballfield and the most open to its development when the idea was first brought up, Kirby said.

“We are grateful to the Coal Mountain community,” he said.

He encouraged residents to attend the Feb. 25 board meeting to show their support for the project.

Commissioner Mills said she is looking forward to the new accommodations.

“It’s going to be a wonderful multipurpose field that can be used for more than just softball,” she said. “Hopefully other sports will be offered on the horizon and will all fit with our thriving therapeutic program and summer camps, too.”

So, imagine my surprise when my wife told me that no, I could not wear jeans to her company’s shindig because they did not conform with the dress code. I was not planning on wearing the bright blue ones with the hole in the crotch, mind you. I am holding on to those for the purpose of embarrassing my daughter when I pick her up from school some years down the road. No, I planned on sporting a nice, new pair that were dark, fit well and, in the dimly lit room where the party was to take place, could not be told apart from the finest of dress slacks from 10 paces.

I am fairly certain the only stipulations of this company’s everyday dress code state that genitals must be covered, most of the time, anyway. So I was rather surprised that the company had outlawed denim from its party like its cotton fibers would usher in the actual Ebola virus.

University of North Georgia continues scholarship trend

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — For the third year in a row, the University of North Georgia has been designated as a top-producing institution for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the 2019-20 academic year.

UNG also is the only public and private university in Georgia to receive the recognition for the student program in the current academic year.

Four other Georgia higher education institutions were named to the top producer list on the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, which is for faculty, administrators and other professional researchers.

The Fulbright is a prestigious and highly competitive fellowship that enables recent graduates and graduate students to pursue academic endeavors overseas. It is designed to increase mutual understanding between U.S. citizens and residents of more than

160 foreign countries.

“This recognition indicates the excellent academic and leadership development opportunities that we provide our students, and for UNG to receive this honor for three consecutive years is a tribute to our talented students and the faculty who mentor them,” UNG President Bonita Jacobs said.

UNG earned the recognition as a top producer for the first time in 2018 after a record eight students went abroad on Fulbright scholarships to conduct research or serve as English teaching assistants in foreign countries. The new record placed UNG as second nationwide among master’s universities in producing Fulbright students.

UNG earned the top-producing award for a second time in 2019 after three graduates were deemed finalists. This third consecutive recognition stems from four UNG graduates receiving the Fulbright.

Women gather Feb. 11 for fun, friendship and fundraising

Personalized mini bouquets were just one of the fun activities offered during the Galentine’s at Halcyon Feb. 11 at the RBM Mercedes location. After crafting bouquets, the ladies took selfies in new vehicles.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Halcyon hosted a ladies’ nights out Feb. 11, and its “Galentines Day” theme was a big hit.

Based on the notion of a fake holiday created by Leslie Knope, a fictional character on the TV series “Parks and Recreation,” the Galentines evening focused on celebrating friendships among women, whether they’re single or not. Whether they sipped and sampled, made crafts or shopped, the ladies had a great time celebrating friendship.

“The event was well planned with many treats along the way. We had so much fun checking out all of the shops,” Marsha Hendricks said. “The Valentine theme was uplifting. The best part was knowing the money was raised for the wonderful Mentor Me organization.”

Mentor Me is a nonprofit dedicated to serving children ages 6 to 17 years of age in Forsyth County. The organization connects children in need and improving their self-image, life choices and opportunities with mentors.

“We are delighted and honored to partner with Halcyon,” Teresa Bath, Mentor Me development specialist said. “The event far exceeded our expectations.

We were hoping to get 200 participants and we have almost 500.”

There was plenty to do see and sample at the liveplay-eat-work development off McFarland Road. Businesses within Halcyon donated raffle prizes, discounts and delicious snacks within their retail and residential spaces, Susan Grunwald, director of marketing for Halcyon said. A scavenger-type activity allowed the ladies

to visit the establishments, browse and play. Mercedes Bends Experience|RBM of Alpharetta hosted a bouquet activity in which ladies created bouquets of fresh flowers and greens, ranging from the exotic to the traditional, courtesy of Syd Nichole, Fashion and Floral. Mercedes staff was on hand to snap photos of ladies in the show cars and answer questions about their vehicles.

Meanwhile Elan Halcyon and Everleigh, the two residential properties within the development, focused on tours of the living space offerings. Elan Halcyon provided the opportunity for participants to create a box of chocolates with yummy confections from It’s A Sweet Life and Kilwins and sipping champagne.

Everleigh offered a hot chocolate bar, complete with marshmallows, cinnamon sticks and adult beverages for added flavoring. When all the meandering and sampling was over, guests were able to receive a chair massage from Totally Running and Walking.

Pine + Pigment art studio in Cumming conducted wine glass etching instruction for the first 100 registrants. Deisel Barber Shop joined the fun, offering complimentary video games for a little friendly competition. Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee provided samples of coffee from a collective of 200 women in Rwanda.

“I love that they picked out a coffee sample made by the women of Rwanda,” Grunwald said.

When the night concluded, the Galentines left with bags of goodies, new memories — illustrated by plenty of selfies — and a sense of compassion, knowing they had supported Mentor Me, despite the rain.

The Place of Forsyth County and Jesse’s House have benefitted from previous Ladies Night Out events, Grunwald said.

American Legion post seeking applications for Georgia Boys State

CUMMING, Ga. — American Legion Post 307 has announced the start of the selection process for the 2020 American Legion Georgia Boys State. This year’s event will run May 24-30 at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga. Boys State is a leadership action program where qualified male high school rising seniors take part in a practical government course. It is designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government and to impress upon participants the fact that our government is what we make it. Along the way, delegates have the opportunity to learn the political process by organizing a mythical 51st state. Each level of government is run by those delegates who are elected to serve. Instruction is presented on the law and court system, parliamentary procedure and Georgia political history.

The American Legion has certain qualifications for prospective Boys State participants.

Only males who have successfully completed their junior year of high school and who have at least one more semester remaining are eligible. Previous participants of a Boys State competition may not attend a second session.

The American Legion focuses on those students who illustrate leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service in their schools and community.

Merit and ability are the basis for evaluation during the actual citizens’ selection process.

Charities group offers free tax preparation services

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — As tax season rolls around, North Fulton Community Charities is again looking to smooth out the hassle for local families.

North Fulton Community Charities is now offering free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance with a team of IRS trained and certified volunteers for area residents. The service is intended for moderate to low income individuals to help with basic tax returns.

“The reason we do this is to make sure folks understand what they are eligible for, to avoid scams and to avoid the refund loans that several places will trap people into,” said Director of Programs Eden Purdy. “This program is very widely respected nationwide.”

Each year, North Fulton Community Charities sees several people who fall for scams or are taken advantage of when they are charged enormous fees for such services or have their personal information stolen by illegitimate tax preparers, Purdy said.

The VITA program, which is held in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service and United Way, is one way residents can avoid such pitfalls.

Another big advantage of the program is that it can also save time and money, as the average tax return costs about $200, Purdy said.

“It is saving you money, but also, the way that we file, through e-file, your refund is deposited directly into your bank account,” she said. “So, the refunds are processed much faster.”

Last year, North Fulton Community Charities helped over 400 people through VITA. This year, the number is expected to grow to about 450-500 people.

Necessary information In order to take advantage of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance services, interested individuals must bring specific documentation and information with them, including: • A picture ID • Social Security cards, a copy of the cards or a Social Security number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration • The Individual Taxpayer Identification Number letter • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN • Birth dates • Wage and earning statement forms from all employers • Interest and dividend statements from banks • Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit, such as a blank check A full list of required information is available online at nfcchelp.org.

North Fulton Community Charities/Special

IRS trained volunteers can help residents file basic tax returns for free through April 14 thanks to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offered by North Fulton Community Charities in partnership with the IRS and United Way. That increase in demand could indicate that it’s getting harder for people to live and work in the local community, Purdy said.

“Even though we have a thriving economy and North Fulton is a very affluent area to live in, there are a lot of folks that we see every day that are struggling just to

live in this area,” she said. “We are seeing rent going up, and we are seeing wages stagnant… It only takes a car to break down or for the main provider to get sick for someone to start losing their income and to get into financial trouble when you live in North Fulton, especially those who are living paycheck to paycheck.”

North Fulton Community Charities, located at 1125 Elkins Road in Roswell, will offer the VITA program MondaysFridays and some Saturdays through April 14. Appointments are required during weekdays. Walk-ins and appointments are available some Saturdays.

Don’t like the weather? It will change Many years ago and right out of college I worked for a good ol’ boy who owned a successful home remodeling company. We’d get to the job site on a blustery morning, the kind where the wind Geoff smith feels like tiny icicles Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com stabbing through your clothes, knowing that we were outside all day. Before we could say anything, he’d say “Don’t like the weather? Stick around ’cause it’s gonna change.”

He didn’t have a lot of patience for me back then, but I like to think that at least I amused him.

Another one of my favorite sayings I stole from him came from when we were about to start the demolition on a 150year old house in Atlanta. The interior walls were horsehair plaster over old wooden slats.

As we stood there ready to get started, I was pontificating about any possible pipe or electrical wire that could be hidden in the wall that he didn’t already think of. I pointed out the location of the bathrooms, kitchens, electrical boxes and explained scenarios where those things could be connected via a pathway through that wall. After standing there with a sledgehammer in his hand and watching me go on, he finally shoved it at me and said “Boy, you about to find out.”

And I did. Quickly.

With that said, I’ll get to it. The weather here in Georgia is quite insane, especially this time of year. The changes are mostly due to the jet stream sliding north and south of us. When it’s to our south, it’s cold because we are feeling the air coming down from Canada. When it is north of us, it’s warm because we are feeling the air coming up from the Gulf.

That’s why a couple weeks ago we went from a beautiful spring day with

a high of 72 degrees on Thursday, to a high of 42 degrees with snow on Saturday, back up to 70 degrees the next Tuesday.

That is a huge shift, but do you know what the weather was for that same time period in Chicago? It was a high of 32 degrees on Thursday, 30 degrees on Saturday and 35 degrees Tuesday. As I’m writing this, it is 0 degrees in Chicago and “feels” like -15 degrees. No wonder I have so many friends who moved from there to here. I’ve been there in the summer, and it is a truly wonderful city. It occurs to me that the winters must be truly awful to push people away from there.

My Chicago friends laugh when they see us natives freak out over the first hint of snow. But for us, for our children, we know snow here is fleeting.

I was at a Cub Scout Pinewood Derby when the snow began to fall last week.

A dedicated group of dads had worked hard with their sons to carve a small car out of a block of wood and were eager to see how their car competed against the others. An even more dedicated smaller group of dads had worked the night before setting up the track in the Queen of Angles gym. But once those fluffy white flakes started falling and accumulating, we had no chance. It could have been full-sized drag racing with Guardians of the Galaxy superheroes driving and there still would have been no possibility of keeping the young scouts inside.

The snow did accumulate. Snowmen and snowwomen were made. Sledding

occurred. And by 4 p.m., the roads were clear.

Here in Atlanta, we are admired for the success of our business community. We grow more jobs every year than almost every other major metropolitan city. We talk about the work done at the ports, on growing our logistics, fintech, data-centers and auto industries. We talk about the genius in laying fiber-optic cables all over the place and making the climate here business-friendly. But I will tell you that, in secret, our top economic development experts will tell you that our greatest asset is our weather.

While we may be famous for shutting down during snow days, those days are far and few between. We don’t have hurricanes or earthquakes. We get a little of every season, and for the most part, our businesses stay open.

So enjoy those short bursts of spring and fall. Because they don’t last long here in Georgia. The weather will always change.

Include a to-do list as part of routine in your workday Are you getting all your tasks and activities completed each day?

Other tasks take less time to complete and when completed, can free up your time to focus on more important activities. Check off the things you complete and how long it took. Maintaining and managing your to-do list is a key to working more efficiently every day.

Forsyth County athletes excel at swim and dive state championships Cambridge, Blessed Trinity girls win overall state titles

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Forsyth County and North Fulton swim and dive teams had standout performances at the 2020 GHSA swim and dive state championships Feb. 6-8. Dozens of athletes earned state titles, the girls teams of Blessed Trinity and Cambridge won team titles, and North Fulton schools nearly swept the boys and girls podium in Class 6A. Alpharetta Alpharetta had an impressive performance at the state meet with the boys and girls teams placing second in Class 6A team scores behind two individual and one team state titles.

Alexandra Clark and Alicia Henry lead the girls squad. Clark notched a state title in the girls 100 fly and Henry bested the field in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Henry notched another state crown in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Audrie Uphues, Ally Metcalf and Lauren Hinton.

Hinton placed second in the 100-yard freestyle and third in 50-yard event. Clark was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Hinton, Sarah Kate Wilson, Clark and Henry were state runner-up in the girls 400-yard medley relay.

The Alpharetta boys 400 medley relay team also placed second behind performances from Charles Lu, Nathan Jin, Jerry Wu and Phillip Kutznetsov.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lu, Jin, Liam Clark and Peter Meng notched a state runner-up finish, and Kuznetsov, Wu, Clarke and Thomas Xiao were third in the 200-yard medley relay.

The Raiders were well represented in the 200-yard freestyle with Lu placing fourth, Wu in sixth, Jack Casey in 7th and Meng in 10th.

Lu was third in 100 free, Xiao was fifth in 100 breast and Jack placed

fourth in the 500 free. Kuznetsov finished third in the 100 fly and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Cambridge The Cambridge girls made history in capturing the Class 6A girls state championship, the first for the program. The Bears held the lead over Centennial entering the final competition of the night, and the girls 400-yard medley relay team of Sophie Brison, Jayla Brown, Claire Kerber and Abigail Grottle sealed the championship by pacing the field to win the event.

The same four racked up another state championship in the 200-yard medley relay.

Individually, Grottle bested the 200yard freestyle field by over 1.6 seconds and added another state title in the 500 free.

Brison also netted two individual state championships in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke. Kerber and Brown each had top-5 finishes. Kerber was fourth in the 100 fly and Brown fifth in the 100 free.

In boys competition, Matthew Gaines led the Bears with a third-place finish in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 fly.

Denmark Denmark earned eight top-10 finishes at the meet and the girls and boys each earned top-15 placements in team scores in Class 4A-5A competition.

Natalie Gilson was fourth in the girls 50-yard freestyle and eight in the 100yard event. Sarah Clark raced to eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Hanna McNamara was 10th in the girls 500 free.

Clark, McNamara, Gilson and Samantha Kenney earned 10th in the 400-yard freestyle relay and McNamara, Clark, Gilson and Shelby Mauldin were 10th in the 200-yard medley relay.

In boys competition, TJ Flores earned two top-10 placements with sixth in the boys 200-yard individual medley and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke. CJ Woodruff placed 10th

in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Flores, Woodruff, Ryan Case and Christopher Trinh finished seventh in the 200-yard medley relay.

Forsyth Central Forsyth Central’s meet effort was led

by Thomas Eaton who placed third in boys 100-yard fly and fourth in 100yard breaststroke.

In girls competition, Amanda Cesario, Katie Semler, Riley Byers and Kate Eaton earned a top-10 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Semler was ninth in the 200-yard individual medley.

Lambert Lambert’s Daniel Gallagher earned a state championship in the 200-yard individual medley and was third in the 100-yard backstroke to lead the Longhorns’ boys swimmers.

The boys 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams each finished seventh.

In girls competition, the Longhorns placed fourth in Class 6A team scores.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Sara Maschmeier, Ella Jones, Lauren Martin and Sarah Blackstone finished as state runner-up. Jones, Lily Blank, Kara West and Mia Wallace were fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The 200-yard freestyle team also placed fifth.

Jones placed as state runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle and was fifth in the 100-yard fly. Martin and Sarah Blackstone each notched top-10 placements with Martin seventh in the 100yard breaststroke and Blackstone eighth in the 50-yard freestyle.

Milton Milton earned several top-10 finishes at the state meet, including two podium finishes.

Cooper Cook was third in the boys 200-yard freestyle and fourth in 100yard backstroke. Wilson Dubois was third in the 500-yard freestyle and seventh in the 200-yard event.

Nicole Lin placed eighth in the girls 100-yard breaststroke.

North Forsyth Hailey Galbrath led North Forsyth by capturing the state championship in the girls 50-yard freestyle. She was also just short of another title, placing second in the 100 fly.

Alex Gonzalez was state runner-up in the boys 100-yard backstroke.

Pinecrest Academy Pinecrest Academy earned five top-10 placements at the state meet.

Anthony Birozes finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle ahead of teammate Mason Carter in 12th, and Birozes recorded another top-10 with sixth the 100 free.

Birozes, Carter, Diego Perez and Brendan Spillane were third in the 200-yard freestyle relay and fourth in the 400-yard event.

Perez placed ninth in the 500-yard freestyle.

South Forsyth South Forsyth’s boys 400-yard freestyle relay team of Jake Taulbee, Ben Isakbayev, Barrett Breeze and Sreenivas Yellayi placed 10th.

West Forsyth West Forsyth athletes earned several state championships in Class 7A competition.

Jack Aikins stood atop the podium in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. He finished ahead of teammate Aikins’ teammate Brett Sasser also shined in the freestyle, placing second in the 100yard event and third in the 50-yard sprint.

Aikins added to his state title total in relay competition. Aikins, Sasser, Griffin Egolf and Owen Holland bested the field in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

West’s June Phang also notched a state title in the 100-yard breaststroke in girls competition. Phang, Kayla Goninan, Nanna Van der Wall and Catalina Infante were sixth in the 200-yard medley relay.

Continued from Page 6 Maybe it is because I am a sports journalist, the least well-dressed in a profession not exactly known for being the epitome of fashion, but I see nothing wrong with donning a nice pair of denim pants in any situation.

But it seems that opinion is still a bit radical for those who have a deeply seeded belief that jeans are far too low class to be worn at certain events or in general office culture.

Perhaps it is the blue-collar background of blue jeans that causes denim discrimination. Some people scoff at the notion of wearing jeans to a Christian church service, as if God will smite those who do not don the finest of fabrics around their legs while in his house. And show up to a country club in jeans? Wearing the same thing a farmer wears to work at this fine Bushwood establishment? A question Ted Knight as Judge Elihu Smails would likely ask.

I have experience in the latter situation where I was barred from trying out for my high school golf team. I went to school that day wearing denim, and being an ill-prepared freshman, I left my “country club suitable” pants at home. Not having the time to go home and retrieve them before the tryout started, I donned my jeans and approached the coach to tell him why I was wearing such “ghastly” pants at a golf club. My explanation fell on deaf ears, and I was barred from making the team for my pants, not for the real

reason I should have not made the team — I am, and have always been, a terrible golfer.

But I dream of day where a man is judged not for the fabric of his pants, but for the content of his character.

We must break the belief that denim is somehow inferior to slacks, dress pants and other means of covering our legs. It is also imperative that we break the stigma that jeans are only for those with blue collars, and wearing them outside of such endeavors is worthy of a scoff. We also must realize that denim is within the means of almost all, because not everyone can afford a silk suit.

It is for all these reasons I believe we must end this denim discrimination! And maybe for the fact I wanted to wear jeans to the aforementioned party because I have put on weight and all my dress pants are a bit tight now…
