(BPT) - Modern medications can work wonders, improving quality of life, curing illness and even saving lives. However, those miracles can come at a high cost, as anyone who’s had to pay for branded prescription medication knows. In fact, spending on prescription drugs has increased 73 percent in the past seven years, according to a new report from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). What’s driving the increase The Health of America Report found prescription drug spending by Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) members increased 10 percent annually since 2010. High costs of patent-protected drugs account for the lion’s share of the total increase. Generic drugs account for 82 percent of total prescriptions filled, but account for just 37 percent of total drug spending. By contrast, patent-protected prescription drugs comprise less than 10 percent of all prescriptions filled but account for 63 percent of total drug spending, the report found. “Experience and past price trends suggest drug costs will continue to rise in the future,” says Maureen Sullivan, chief strategy and innovation officer for BCBS. “The need for more affordable generic alternatives to costly patentprotected brand-name pharmaceuticals is urgent. As prices continue to rise, more consumers will be looking for ways to curb the cost of their medications.” What you can do It is possible to lower your drug costs while still taking the medications your doctor has prescribed to help your health. BCBSA offers some guidance: * If your doctor prescribes a costly name-brand medication, ask your physician or pharmacist if a generic version is available. Generic drugs are identical to their brand-name equivalents in dosage form, safety, strength and quality, how you take them, performance and intended use, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Generics typically cost less than name-brand medications. The BCBSA report shows how costs for medicines like Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Avapro (irbesartan) plummet when generic alternatives become available. * It may be possible for your doctor to prescribe a higher strength than you need of a particular medication and allow you to split the tablet or pill to get the lower dose you need at a lower cost. In fact, many pills that can be safely split come pre-scored with an indenta-

tion that makes it easier to cut them in half. However, not all prescription medications can be safely split, so be sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about whether it’s safe to split your medications. * Ordering prescription medications through the mail could lower drug costs, but it’s important to ensure you’re buying from your pharmacy benefit manager, typically listed on the back of an insurance card. The FDA recommends you only purchase drugs from organizations located in the U.S. and licensed by the state board of pharmacy where the company operates (find a list of state boards of pharmacy at www.nabp.info). The mail order pharmacy should have a licensed pharmacist available to answer your questions, require a prescription from your doctor in order to sell you medication, and have someone you can talk to directly if you have questions or problems. * Another way to reduce drug costs is to ask your doctor to write your prescription for a 90-day supply so that you will get a three-month supply of the medication for the price of one co-pay. * Finally, review your prescriptions with your doctor at least every six months to ensure you’re not taking any more medicines than you absolutely need. However, never skip doses of medicine, avoid refilling a prescription or stop taking medicine altogether without first consulting your doctor. Basal Cell Carcinoma By: Dr. Brent Taylor, Premier Dermatology and MOHS Surgery of Atlanta Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is an abnormal growth or lesion arising from the skins basal layer, the deepest layer of the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin). Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. When a person taylor is overexposed to UVB radiation, it damages the body's natural repair system, which causes basal cell carcinomas to grow. These tend to be slow-growing tumors and rarely metastasize (spread) to other organ systems. What does basal cell carcinoma look like? Basal cell carcinomas can present in a number of different ways: • raised pink or pearly white bump with a pearly edge and small, visible blood vessels • pigmented bumps that look like moles with a pearly edge • a sore that continuously heals and re-opens • flat scaly scar with a waxy appearance and blurred edges Despite the different appearances of the cancer, they all tend to bleed with little or no cause. Eighty-five percent of basal cell carcinomas occur on the face and neck since these are areas that are most exposed to the sun. What are the risk factors for developing a basal cell carcinoma? The BIG cause: Both long term sun exposure over the course of a lifetime as well as intense sun exposure (sunburn) combined to cause sun damaged skin that may lead to basal cell carcinoma. Most basal cell carcinoma Both long-term sun exposure over your lifetime and occasional extended, intense exposure (typically leading to sunburn) combine to cause damage that can lead to BCC. Almost all BCCs occur on parts of the body excessively exposed to the sun — especially the face, ears, neck, scalp, shoulders, and back. On rare occasions, however, tumors develop on unexposed areas. In a few cases, contact with arsenic, exposure to radiation, open sores that resist healing, chronic inflammatory skin conditions, and complications of burns, scars, infections, vaccinations, or even tattoos are contributing factors. It is not possible to pinpoint a precise, single cause for a specific tumor, especially one found on a sun-protected area of the body or in an extremely

N. Atlanta Welcomes Dr. Brent Taylor Insist on the BEST young individual. Other risk factors for developing a basal cell carcinoma include: having fair skin, sun exposure, age (most skin cancers occur after age 50), exposure to ultraviolet radiation (as in tanning beds) and therapeutic radiation given to treat an unrelated health issue. Diagnosing basal cell carcinoma requires a biopsy — either excisional, where the entire tumor is removed along with some of the surrounding tissue, or incisional, where only a part of the tumor is removed (used primarily for large lesions). Treatments for basal cell carcinoma include: • Cryosurgery — Some basal cell carcinomas respond to cryosurgery, where liquid nitrogen is used to freeze off the tumor. • Curettage and Desiccation — The preferred method of dermatologists, this treatment involves using a small metal instrument (called a curette) to scrape out the tumor along with an application of an electric current into the tissue to kill off any remaining cancer cells. • Mohs Micrographic Surgery — The preferred method for large tumors, Mohs Micrographic Surgery combines removal of cancerous tissue with microscopic review while the surgery takes place. By mapping the diseased tissue layer by layer, less healthy skin is damaged when removing the tumor. • Prescription Medicated Creams — These creams can be applied at home. They stimulate the body's natural immune system over the course of weeks. • Radiation Therapy — Radiation therapy is used for difficult-to-treat tumors, either because of their location, severity or persistence. • Surgical Excision — In this treatment the tumor is surgically removed and stitched up.

The power of laser therapy has been experienced by thousands of physicians and patients and the results of its therapeutic effects have been extraordinary. In my 18 years of being in Physical Therapy, I have never seen anything that produces results like Laser Therapy. This procedure is FDA cleared for the treatment of pain, inflammation, arthritis, and muscle spasms. Laser therapy uses a process called photobio-modulation to enhance your body’s ability to heal itself. It works by flooding the tissues with photons, energizing damaged cells and increasing circulation to the painful area. Treatments are safe, painless and fast and generally last about 5 to 10 minutes per session. The results can vary but most patients report results in 3 to 5 treatments with long lasting effects. We are the first Physical Therapy practice in the area to invest in Laser Therapy technology. I am constantly amazed at what it does for our patients. If you are reading this article and are experiencing any type of pain and you want pain relief fast, I would invite you to come in and try Laser Therapy. I’m

Five steps to plan for dealing with diminished capacity and illness (NAPSI)—Aging can change many things in a person’s life, including the ability to manage one’s own money. That sobering reality is behind the creation of a new resource, “Planning for Diminished Capacity and Illness,” issued by the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). These organizations offer this key tip for how to prepare for your financial future: Hope for the best but plan for the worst. The Problem “Diminished financial capacity” generally refers to a decline in a person’s ability to manage assets to serve his or her best interests. When people of any age lose the capability to manage their finances, they may also become more vulnerable to investment fraud and other forms of financial abuse. What You Can Do These five steps can help you prepare. Step 1: Organize your important financial documents. Store them in a safe, easily accessible location. Give copies to trusted loved ones or let them know where to find them. When it comes to bank and brokerage statements and account information, make a list of your accounts with account numbers. Keep a separate list of online bank and brokerage passwords and PINs, and keep both lists in a safe place. List the locations of your safe-deposit boxes and their keys. Keep your mortgage and credit information, insurance policies, retirement benefits and Social Security information easily accessible. Step 2: If you work with a financial professional, give that person emergency contact information in

case he or she can’t reach you or suspects something is wrong. Discuss what you would consider to be an emergency and specify when your financial professional may contact someone on your behalf. Step 3: Consider creating a durable financial power of attorney. A financial power of attorney gives someone the legal authority to make financial decisions for you if you cannot. That person is called your agent. A financial power of attorney differs from a health care power of attorney, which covers only health care decisions. After signing a durable financial power of attorney, you can still manage your money and property as long as you have the ability to make decisions. Since you’re essentially giving financial decision-making authority to your agent, it’s critical he or she be someone you trust. Step 4: Keep things up to date. If something changes (for example, you open a new account), keep your information as current as possible. Your trusted contact may also change over time. Keep your financial professionals informed of changes regarding who has authority to review your account or whom they should contact in an emergency. Step 5: Speak up if something goes wrong. If you ever think someone is taking advantage of you or that you’ve been the victim of a fraud, speak up. Sadly, sometimes even family members, financial professionals and other people they think they can trust commit financial crimes. If this happens to you or your loved one, you’re not alone—and the sooner you let someone know about it, the better chance there is of put-
