The Young Men’s Service League is a national nonprofit for teenage boys and their mothers. The fouryear program provides volunteer opportunities that aim to benefit the local community. The group’s

annual Ultimate Gift is a multi-day philanthropic event with a different partner every year.

For the 2022 Ultimate Gift, 130 members of the Sandy Springs Young Men’s Service League chapter worked with Sandy Springs Mission, an organization created in 1999 to support Latino youth through academic programming.

North Carolina man arrested for shoplifting DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody police have arrested a man after he allegedly attempted to shoplift more than $1,000 in “high end purses” from Von Maur at Perimeter Mall.

Police reports said the man was arrested Dec. 4 after loss prevention officers saw him concealing several purses in a bag, while walking around the Von Maur store. The suspect fled the scene but was stopped at a side exit and taken into custody.

The suspect, a 34-year-old resident of North Carolina, was charged with felony shoplifting and was transported to the DeKalb County Jail without incident.

Parked vehicle’s wheels stolen in Dunwoody DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody police reports said that someone stole the

wheels off a car parked off of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in November.

The incident occurred Nov. 26 at about 4 a.m. and was captured on security camera footage, police said. The victim was able to watch on the recording as his vehicle was put on a jack and its wheels were stolen. Reports said the victim’s wheels were custom made and cost about $3,000.The victim could not provide a description of the suspects or their vehicle and said video footage of the incident had accidentally been deleted.

No further information was available at the time of the report.

Dunwoody man arrested for domestic battery DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody police arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly attacking a family member during an incident at a residence.

Police reports said officers responded to an apartment on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard Nov. 27 and were told that a resident of the home had broken down a door and struck another resident of the home while forcing his way into a room.

A female victim reported the suspect was demanding money to “purchase some marijuana,” and her refusal sparked the attack.

The suspect also is alleged to have

broken several other pieces of property in the home. Police later learned the suspect has been arrested several other times for similar incidents in the past.

Dunwoody police officers located and arrested the suspect the next day, and he was charged with assault and criminal trespass.

Burglar takes electronics from woman’s apartment DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody police are investigating a burglary that took place at a local apartment complex Dec. 2.

The resident of an apartment complex on Abercorn Avenue reported that she arrived home at about 10 a.m. Dec. 2 and found her front door had been kicked open. In addition to the damage to her door, the woman said multiple electronic devices had been stolen.

The woman said she believes her exboyfriend, a 30-year-old Decatur man, was responsible for the burglary.

Using license plate reading traffic cameras, officers were able to determine the ex-boyfriend had been in the area of the burglary during the time the apartment was unoccupied, the report said.

No arrests had been made in the case.

DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody police reported of ficers fired on an ar med during an incident of f Perimeter Center Dec. 8.

No one was injured in the confrontation.

Of ficers were called to 124 Perimeter Center West at about 3 p.m., responding to a “trouble

unknown call” and reported finding an ar med suspect at the scene.

The suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at the of ficers, said Sgt. Michael Cheek of the Dunwoody Police Department.

“The two of ficers on scene fired shots at the suspect and missed him,” Cheek said. “Moments later, the of fender was taken into custody without further incident.”

Neither the two of ficers nor

the suspect were injured, but of ficials said the incident has been submitted for outside review to the Sandy Springs Police Department.

“A thorough review of this incident will be completed,” Cheek said.

Dunwoody and Sandy Springs Police have not responded to Appen Media’s requests for further infor mation.

Marist School selects its first lay president DUNWOODY, Ga. — Marist School has selected its newest president. James D. Childs will serve as the first nonordained president in the school’s 122-year history. He will officially begin the role on CHILDS July 1.

Childs will take over the position from Fr. William Rowland. He’ll lead Marist, the oldest Catholic secondary school in Metro Atlanta, with an enrollment of about 1,100 boys and girls.

Originally from South Bend, Ind., Childs is president at Bishop O’Dowd High School in the Diocese of Oakland, California. He served as the school’s principal from 2016 to

2018 until he was appointed president.

Childs also served as president and principal at Mission College Preparatory Catholic in Califor nia, and before that, as a religion teacher and director of spiritual life at Catholic schools in Indiana and North Carolina.

Childs has a bachelor’s degree in English, philosophy and theology from Notre Dame, and a Master of Theological Studies in Systematic Theology. He also holds a Master of Education in Catholic School Leadership from Marymount University.

“We searched far and wide for the right person to lead Maris School through the next phase of our history as we transition to lay leadership,” Chairman of the Marist School Board of T rustees Bill Roche said. “We couldn’t be more excited about Childs’ vast experience as a proven leader in Catholic school education and his enthusiasm about joining the Marist family.”

Post offices played vital role in Georgia’s development Two of our nation’s founding fathers share responsibility for establishing the postal service that we pretty much take for granted today. In 1737, Benjamin Franklin was selected by the British government BOB MEYERS to be Postmaster of Columnist Philadelphia, a post bobmey@bellsouth.net he held for several years. During his tenure, carefully marked routes were established from Maine to Florida, overnight mail delivery between New York and Philadelphia was launched, and a postal rate chart based on distance and weight of letters and parcels was created. This was essential infrastructure that enabled future enhancements to take place.

In 1775, a year before Congress declared independence from Great Britain, Franklin was appointed our nation’s first postmaster by the Second Continental Congress, a position he held for only about a year, long enough to establish a new system of postal routes from today’s Portland, Maine, to Savannah, Georgia,

which became the first post office in our state. Soon after the colonies declared independence in July 1776, Franklin was named an ambassador to France.

The postal system by then was well established and continued to flourish.

George Washington signed the Postal Service Act in 1792 creating The Post Office Department. This pivotal legislation gave the postal service responsibility for creating additional postal routes, essential for settlement of a new and expanding nation. It recognized a right to privacy by stipulating severe penalties for opening other people’s mail and allowed inexpensive distribution of newspapers by mail, which encouraged literacy and participation in community affairs.

Franklin, along with George Washington, were honored by being on the first U.S. postage stamps in 1847.

Certainly, the U.S. Postal Service has its challenges today. It lost $4.9 billion in 2021. The volume of mail has been declining for years while advertisements now constitute the majority of USPS mail.

Competition from other carriers, the cost of pension benefits for more than 1 million workers and retirees, increased cost of fuel and equipment pose real challenges

for the institution. However, the USPS is written into our Constitution and still provides essential services. Don’t expect it to go away any time soon.

The history and importance of post offices in Old Milton County and surrounding areas in north Georgia has been studied in great detail by Ed Malowney, president of the Alpharetta and Old Milton Historical Society and founder of the Johns Creek Historical Society. Over the past five years, he has researched some 40 post offices in Old Milton County and another 30 or so in surrounding counties, plus some 200 individuals connected to the post offices.

His initial efforts focused on four villages, or crossroads communities, Newtown, Warsaw, Shakerag and Ocee and quickly expanded into surrounding areas.

When studying post offices, Malowney has noted the importance of family ties.

Post offices often existed in tight-knit communities where the postmaster was the head of a leading family. His descendants or close relatives often followed in his footsteps and became postmasters in the same or nearby communities. This interconnectivity existed in many post office jurisdictions.

Another interesting finding of his research is that several postmasters were medical doctors.

“I’m not sure why,” Malowney says. “It is the last thing I would expect.”

The Skelton-Teasley House, built in 1856, was the home of physician Dr. Oliver P Skelton, appointed in 1858 to be Alpharetta’s first postmaster. It is located on one of the highest points in Alpharetta. It is now home to the Ginger Room, a coffee and tea cafe.

Because many post offices were housed in or near stores, he believes this may have been a promotional tool by a store owner if the doctor held regular clinics in the store.

Malowney notes that the first postmaster of Alpharetta was Dr. Oliver P. Skelton, who was appointed in 1858, the day the Farmhouse Post Office was closed. Farmhouse was a small community located northeast of Route 400 and Old Milton Parkway. The Farmhouse postmaster was Isham Teasley, Skelton’s son-in-law. Skelton served two other Alpharetta appointments and Teasley also was later appointed to serve as the Alpharetta postmaster. In 1899, Isham’s wife, Nannie Teasley, became the first female postmaster in Alpharetta.

A third finding of the research pertains

to the devastating economic impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction period, which delayed the establishment of Milton County post offices. Only one Milton post office was added in 1873, three in the early 1880s and six in the late 1880s.

Nine post offices were added in the 1890s.

Most were discontinued by 1907 with the implementation of Rural Free Delivery.

At that time old Milton County had one post office at Alpharetta. The Roswell Post Office, then part of Cobb County, covered the south portion of the county; Duluth, in Gwinnett County, provided mail service to the eastern part of the county.

Ed’s goal for his research is to preserve the basic information electronically and in hard copy for current and future generations and to selectively write summaries for each post office and related individuals.

Dr. Jeremy Rosenberg

October 30, 1973 – September 21, 2022

Dr. Jeremy Mathew Rosenberg, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend passed away on September 26, 2022. Jeremy grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and attended Woodward Academy. He went to University of Georgia where he was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi and where he met his wife and best friend of over 23 years, Amy Shuman Rosenberg.

Jeremy and Amy live in Dunwoody, Georgia and are members of Congregation B’nai Torah. Jeremy is survived by Amy, their two Daughters, Sarah and Hailey Rosenberg, and their two dogs, Breaker and Lily. Jeremy attended Case Western Dental School and was a member of Alpha Omega, the dental fraternity. Jeremy’s dental practice, Peachtree Dunwoody Dental Group, serviced the metro Atlanta area for 17 years. Jeremy was Amy’s true partner in life and love; and they enjoyed spending time hiking with their dogs at the river, traveling with their family and friends, relaxing at home, attending concerts and movies, and going on their evening walks and catching up with their neighbors. Jeremy was an adoring father and he loved to spend time with his daughters baking, laughing, and attending their activities. Jeremy cherished his nephews, laughing and wrestling with them during their visits. Jeremy loved spending time with his friends, whom he considered family. He cared about his patients, most of whom were with him from the beginning of his practice, and his dedicated staff. Jeremy was super handy and could fix anything - especially related

to cars. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved comedy and jokes. He was an avid fan of history, especially anything to do with World War Two. Jeremy always had music playing in the background and loved live music, especially the Grateful Dead and Tom Petty. He was a wonderful role model and member of the community, known as hardworking, honest, caring, thoughtful and always looking for ways to help others. Even in death, Jeremy as an organ donor, will be helping numerous individuals receive lifesaving transplants that will extend and improve the recipient’s lives and their families.

Jeremy is survived by his wife Amy and his daughters Sarah and Hailey, his mother Susan and stepfather Howard Rothman; his grandmother Diane Plochl, his father Paul and stepmother Cathy Rosenberg; brother Joshua Rosenberg and sister-inlaw Alison Fine and nephews Max and Levi Rosenberg; sister Lisa Rosenberg; mother-in-law Mona Shuman and Gerald H. Shuman (OBM); sister-in-law Eileen J. Shuman; step-siblings Michael and Rhonda Rothman, Aviva and Clemens Reuter, Karen and Murray Diamond, and Sheindle and Jack Rudniki; and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and cousins who will miss him every day.
