DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody City Council held two more public hearings on keeping the city’s proposed property tax rate steady at 2.74 mills.

The hearings, held June 28 at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., drew only one resident to speak on the proposal.

“It’s necessary that the government tax us,” Robert Wolford said at the morning public hearing. “I believe that we are taxed at a fair rate.”

Council members commented during both hearings that they felt that the city’s property tax rate is a bargain for homeowners.

“I just want to make sure everyone knows what a value it is to live in this city,” Councilman Joe Seconder said. “I’m looking at my 2009 tax bill and it is exactly the same.

We are getting a great bang for your buck here.”

Testy driver strikes car in road rage encounter DUNWOODY, Ga. — Police were dispatched to a June 23 road rage incident at a SunTrust Bank along Chamblee Dunwoody Road. The victim said another driver intentionally sideswiped her vehicle during a traffic dispute that spilled into the bank’s parking lot.

The Roswell woman claimed the suspect tailgated her northbound on Chamblee Dunwoody Road and grew visibly upset as she followed behind a commercial truck. When she turned in to the SunTrust Bank, she said the suspect followed her into the parking lot and intentionally struck the right side of her Nissan Sentra.

The suspect then drove off, according to police. The victim was unable to

give officers a description of the other driver.

Man with ‘meth eyes’ steals cyclist’s wheels

Mark Stuart Lange, 65, of Wood Hollow Drive, Atlanta, was arrested June 15 on Kingsland Drive for DUI and improper lane usage.

Jane Elizabeth Hoag, 49, of Olde Village Lane, Dunwoody, was arrested June 15 on Dunwoody Village Parkway for DUI. Melvin James Thornton, 27, of Buckley Woods Drive, Norcross, was arrested June 21 on Chamblee Dunwoody Road for DUI and speeding.

Alicia I. Thomas, 47, of Perimeter Center East, Dunwoody, was arrested June 27 on Perimeter Center East for disorderly under the influence.

Dionisio Pacheco, 39, of Kay Drive, Norcross, was arrested June 24 on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard for drug-possession of amphetamine and disorderly conduct.

Nandish Chikkanna, 35, of Summer Drive, Atlanta, was arrested June 24 on Perimeter Center East for DUI and wrong side of roadway.

Connie Elaine Jones, 61, of Dunbar Drive, Dunwoody, was arrested June 21 on Shallowford Road for DUI and improper lane.

DUNWOODY, Ga. — A Dunwoody man had his bicycle stolen from a Chevron gas station along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard early June 24.

The 26-year-old victim told officers he noticed the suspect glaring at him from across the parking lot when he pulled up to the store on his bike around 2:15 a.m. When the victim exited the store, the suspect was standing outside near his bicycle. The man grasped for what appeared to be a gun in his waistband and told the victim to “keep shopping,” according to police.

The victim said the suspect continued to scowl at him with what he described as “meth eyes.” He described the suspect as a 5-foot, 6-inch man in his 20s to 30s with a medium build.

The robber rode away with the victim’s bicycle heading south on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard toward Tilly Mill Road, officers said.

Brookhaven social justice commission prepares revisions to city policy

By CHAMIAN CRUZ newsroom@appenmedia.com BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — Anticipation is building as Brookhaven’s Social Justice, Race and Equity Commission approaches its first year of existence.

The commission met for its regular monthly meeting June 24 to discuss upcoming events it hopes will create community engagement.

Founded in September in response to months of protests over police brutality and racism, the commission is reviewing city policies, procedures and the police department to draft a list of recommendations to the Brookhaven City Council by the end of the year.

The council allocated $179,635 to fund the commission, and elected officials will decide whether to enact policies based on the commission’s recommendations.

Chairman John Funny said the point of the commission is to review policies and ensure there are no inherent biases or injustices, but he also stressed there are no glaring improprieties in current city operations.

“As the country was dealing with a lot of racial issues in the year of 2020, I put together an op-ed for the mayor and council just sharing that Brookhaven is a great city and I would want it to remain a great city,” Funny said. “I considered it an opportunity as a new city to take a look under the hood and do a tune-up if needed.”

Funny, who has served on the city Planning Commission and on the board of the Brookhaven Police Foundation, said he thinks the social justice commission may be one of the few of its kind in the country.

“We are working with an organization out of Ohio, The Kettering Foundation, and they have expressed to us that we are one of the few that have this commission in place,” Funny said. “So, they are awaiting the output of our product to be able to share with others the great things that we are doing.”

Chrysalis Lab, an Atlanta-based company that provides facilitation services, partnered with the Kettering Foundation to manage and execute the work of the commission.

In its first phase, the 35-member commission reviewed the city’s vision statement and launched community surveys. In phase two, it divided up into subcommittees to develop community engagement plans.

The third phase involves an engagement plan to identify community partners and prior issues on policing, procurement and hiring. The final phase will be for the commission to present the City Council with

recommendations.

Up until last month, the board had been conducting all meetings online. It plans to host a number of events this summer, such as pop-ups at Northeast Plaza on Buford Highway where there is a large Hispanic population, to educate the public about its mission and to collect feedback from the broad Brookhaven community.

The commission will also hold a series of Civic Dinners, also with a virtual option similar to Zoom meetings.

Commission member Stephen Causby said all of the Civic Dinners will focus on racial equity.

Funny said the summer campaign will be vital to the commission’s success.

“We’re really, really getting ready to go right into this public engagement component,” Funny said. “This is a big piece, because I think the public should have input into what we’re doing.”

Brookhaven has a fair mix of racial diversity. Of its roughly 55,000 residents, 53 percent are white, 30 percent Hispanic/Latino, 10 percent Black and

5 percent Asian. And, while the city is majority female, its city staff and police department are more than 60 perent male.

Valerie Lemmie, director of exploratory research at the Kettering Foundation, who sat in on the meeting Thursday, praised the commission for its work so far.

“I appreciate the opportunity to really observe and be a part of the innovative and creative work that your community is engaged in. Very few communities take on a responsibility this demanding and this challenging and rise to the occasion,” she said. “I have just been so impressed with everyone’s participation, engagement, ideas and mutual respect. That’s the model you want the community to take and you are doing an excellent job.”

The Brookhaven Social Justice, Race and Equity Commission meets the third Thursday of each month.

Johns Creek swears in new police chief Veteran officer named to head department damaged by scandal

By SYDNEY DANGREMOND sydney@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Less than a year after it severed ties with Police Chief Chris Byers, the Johns Creek City Council swore in Mark Mitchell as the department’s new head June 21.

City Manager Ed Densmore, who served 12 years as Johns Creek’s first police chief, led the search, enlisting the help of the International Association of Chiefs of Police for the nationwide search.

“We chose [IACP] specifically because they offered to do a turnkey selection process,” Densmore said. “And they were one of the few [third party search firms] that were able to incorporate community feedback using surveys and those types of functions that we were specifically looking for.”

Using input from the city manager, the City Council and survey responses from the community, the organization began compiling an ideal candidate profile. The community survey, conducted through the city’s website, drew 456 resident responses, according to Johns Creek Communications Director Bob Mullen.

The IACP screened applications and shared a shortlist with Densmore.

At the same time, three panels of five members each were assembled for preliminary interviews with candidates.

The first panel, Mayor Mike Bodker said, was composed of citizens who were either nominated by City Council members or who had expressed interest in joining the process. Those candidates were then screened and approved by the IACP. The second panel included members of surrounding local law enforcement agencies from Forsyth County,

The third and final panel featured Johns Creek government department heads, not including law enforcement.

Each panel interviewed four candidates, drafted a list of pros and cons for each, and submitted their findings to Densmore, Bodker said.

The city manager then met with the candidates several times before extending the offer to Mitchell and submit his nomination to the City Council on June 7. Densmore said he considered the input from the community survey and from the three panels to form a desired candidate profile. He also registered informal conversations he’d had with residents throughout the search process.

“It really kind of boiled down to somebody who could restore some of the trust, help with the morale of the department… somebody who had a passion for the position,” Densmore said.

“It was somebody who had been in that role before as a chief. Somebody of high ethical standards, somebody who can really show a pattern of being able to work with the community.”

For Mitchell, the decision to lead Johns Creek Police was not difficult.

“Johns Creek has always had a very excellent reputation in the law enforcement community as one of the topnotch departments in the state,” Mitchell said. “The more I went through the interview process, the more intrigued I was about the department, the more I wanted to be part of the organization.”

Mitchell joins the department with 28 years of law enforcement experience, having served as chief of police for the City of Canton and most recently as the chief of staff for the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.

Mitchell said his time with the Canton Police Department taught him a lot about the importance of building trust within the community and gave him the opportunity to put the pillars of 21st century policing into practice.

The phrase “21st century policing” comes from a task force formed during the Obama administration that established policing best practices.

The six pillars governing the principle are: • Building trust and legitimacy • Policy and oversight • Technology & social media • Community policing & crime reduction • Training & education • Officer wellness & safety Mitchell said he sees good implementation of the pillars in the JCPD already.

“I believe my experience, along with what this department already has, as it relates to that mindset for community, engagement and building partnerships in the community, may definitely be a good marriage,” Mitchell said.

The partnerships between the community and police are important, Mitchell said.

“We can sit here and talk about community policing all day, ‘It’s what we’re going to do, this is what we can do,’ and all that,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got to follow through with what we say we’re going to do, to continue to build that trust and those partnerships because communication is going to be the biggest key.”

Trust in the JCPD was damaged in the wake of the former chief’s exit last August. Before quietly settling with the city for $325,000 and resigning, Byers was investigated and found guilty of sexual harassment within the department.

Mitchell said he plans to uphold a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment that was maintained during Interim Police Chief Roland Castro’s administration.

“That’s something we would not tolerate here at the Johns Creek Police Department at all,” Mitchell said. “So, maintaining that standard, maintaining the professionalism of the organization, and making sure that it doesn’t matter

who you are, what race, what gender you are. Here in this department, you know that you can come to a safe work environment, a successful work environment, without being harassed in any way.”

The road back to positive community relations is a long one, but Mitchell said he is determined to build that bridge.

“This is not an overnight thing,” Mitchell said. “But it’s a daily thing, a daily reinforcement, daily consistency, because we want our citizens to say, ‘That police department has our best interest at heart. They’re going to professionally and procedurally treat us justly. And if they make a mistake, they’re going to tell us that they made a mistake… But they’re going to also put things in place to fix it.’”

Health Insurance – What are my options, and what is right for me?

Height and weight measurements.

On average, children ages 5-12 grow a little more than two inches a year, and they gain about 6.5 pounds a year.

Blood pressure measurement. Ideal blood pressure ranges vary based on a child’s age.

Hearing and vision screenings. Your family’s pediatrician can ensure your child’s hearing and vision are functioning well so they have the tools they need to succeed.

Olympic torch crossed through Dunwoody 25 years ago July 18, 2021 will mark 25 years since the day the Olympic torch relay went from Roswell through Dunwoody to Sandy Springs, before continuing toward Atlanta.

In the fall of 1995, VALERIE newspapers across the country anBIGGERSTAFF nounced three ways to become one of 10,000 torch bearers in the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay, which was sponsored

by Coca-Cola. In all, 5,500 community heroes would be selected by United Way chapters. An application and essay were required explaining why the nominee was a hero.

Another 2,500 community heroes were selected to participate in the relay as part of the Coca-Cola Share the Spirit program. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and the U.S. Olympic committee selected 2,000 present and former Olympians and other VIPs to complete the list of torch bearers.

According to olympics.com the total number of torchbearers for the 1996 games reached 800 in Greece and 12,467 in the United States.

The Olympic flame arrived in the United States from Greece on April 27, arriving at Los Angeles in a specially designed lamp. Dunwoody resident and Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games CEO Billy Payne took the lamp from the plane. At the Los Angeles Coliseum, the Olympic torch was lit. This was the beginning of a cross country 84-day journey.

The July 10, 1996 Crier newspaper described the path of the torch through Dunwoody. The newspaper announced that the torch was expected to arrive at 5 p.m. on Thursday July 18. “Carried by a score of Dunwoody residents, the torch will pass around the city and around the

From Roswell, the torch came down Roswell Road, turning left on Pitts Road and right on Spalding Drive closer to 6 p.m. Skip Lehman ran the relay along Spalding Drive to Chamblee Dunwoody Road. The next torch bearers were Ann Stoer, Julie Guthrie, and Craig Ehlo.

At Dunwoody Village Parkway, Walter Sessoms continued the relay past the Cheek-Spruill House. Charles Coe carried the flame to the right at Mount Vernon Highway, followed by Bill McNair and Bryan Langston along Ashford Dunwoody Road. (The Story of Dunwoody, “The Olympics Come to Atlanta and the Torch Comes Through Dunwoody”, Bill McCahan) The torch relay turned right on Hammond Drive, crossing Peachtree Dunwoody Road and entering Sandy Springs.

From there, a right turn at Barfield Road and a left at Abernathy Road brought the torch to Roswell Road where the relay continued toward Atlanta.

Dunwoody Road just north of the fork with my two children that day, having decided that it was essential for them to be there. It was an exciting few minutes when the torch passed by. The part that

stands out most in my mind is the heat.

Tax: Continued from Page 1 While most citizens will see little change in their city taxes, commercial property owners, homeowners who have had their properties reassessed or have purchased a home in 2020 and those ineligible for a homestead exemption will pay more taxes in 2021.

DeKalb County School taxes are exempt from the homestead exemption and make up about 60 percent of the total tax bill. In order to have a true “revenue-neutral” budget, Dunwoody would have to roll back its millage rate to 2.48 mills, but it has elected not to do that.

Each “mill” reflects a tax of $1 for every $1,000 of assessed value of a home or property.

Data from the Dunwoody Finance Department shows the average annual increase to a homeowner with a residence valued at $450,000 will be about $46.80. The increase for a $2.2 million house will be about $228.80.

New home purchases, commercial properties and re-assessments will mean an increase of about 10 percent in tax revenues, Dunwoody Assistant City Manager Jay Vinicki said.

Most homeowners in Dunwoody have taken advantage of the homestead exemption, with more than 85 percent opting to apply for a freeze that will last as long as they own their property, Vinicki said.

50th Wedding Anniversary

On July 16, 2021, Dunwoody residents Jerry and Roberta Maddox will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Roberta moved to Atlanta from Sarasota, Fl. and married Jerry, a life-long resident of Decatur, GA in 1971. They became members of Dunwoody United Methodist Church and remain members through the present date.

Roberta is retired from twenty-seven years of employment with a large law firm in Midtown, Atlanta, as a secretary, and later worked in the resource center. Jerry retired form Sears, Roebuck, & Co., in Atlanta where he was employed for thirtyone years as a Catalog Management Executive. In 2019 he received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Who’s Who in America for being in the top 5% of 600,000 other biographies shown in the 2019 edition of Who’s Who. The Maddox’s three children; Lamont, Ryan, and Jolie all graduated from Dunwoody High School and Auburn University. Lamont and his wife Jennifer, live in Florence AL, where they are employed by The University of North Alabama. Ryan, his wife Kathy, and their daughter, Finley, live in Dunwoody with Ryan being an epidemiologist at the CDC. Kathy is an independent consultant in public health. Jolie lives in Atlanta where she is employed as an architect with the Lord Aeck and Sargent firm.

More about birds And their feathers The grandkids were here last weekend, and it’s safe to say that a good time was had by all! There was a little too much rain for us to do much fishing, but we did get in a bit of rock collecting (more on that STEVE HUDSON next week).

You may recall that our back deck has become a favorite dining room for all sorts of birds. My wife and I have had a great time watching the feeder and the bird bath. We’ve picked up a number of bird ID books. We have binoculars for watching the ones that stay a little farther away. We’ve even got a little USB camera that focuses on the main feeder, giving us some high-tech views of some of our feathered friends.

We’re learning to identify them (fun in itself!), and we have even taken one more step and put up a couple of hummingbird feeders.

We talked about the hummingbird feeders in a recent column. The two feeders hang right outside our den window.

Near them are several containers planted with hummer-friendly plants, too.

For a while, we were not getting any hummingbirds at all. Then, just about a week ago, that changed. First, we would see one every couple of days. Then one every day. Then two…then four…and then, just yesterday, we counted eight separate visits. They’re coming more frequently, and they’re staying at the feeders or the flowers for longer at a time.

Apparently, the word is out (“Free food at the Hudson place!), and that’s been really exciting.

The grandkids and I had fun watching the feeders and looking for the occasional hummingbirds, and (like kids everywhere) they quickly became fascinated with all the avian comings and goings. It’s really neat to see kids become interested in something in the natural world, isn’t it!

They also had a blast practicing casting with their new fishing rods. Yes, being the dutiful Granddaddy that I am, I made sure that there were two shiny new Zebco spinning outfits waiting when they arrived.

Because of the afore-mentioned rain, our fishing time was limited to one 45-minute excursion. I must be a good teacher, too, because the grandson hooked a nice bass.

It’s always fun to enjoy the out-ofdoors with kids.

And that brings us to…

A correction: I remember when my own kids were little, we spent a lot of time walking around in the yard and down by the pond looking at things. A favorite thing to look for was always feathers. We’d spot one, and one of the kids would announce its presence. “Look, Daddy! A feather!”

Thanks to the pond by the house, many of those feathers once belonged to Canada geese. Those geese loved the pond, and it was pretty common to see shed feathers (especially during molting season, which is this time of year) laying on the ground.

But that brings us to an “uh-oh.”

Once, I’d have been tempted to pick up that feather. In fact, I talked about picking up feathers in a recent column.

Kids (of all ages) seem drawn to them.

But it turns out that you can’t do that. You can’t pick up feathers from most wild birds, including migratory birds such as geese. So says the law.

Say what?

Yes, it is true. I checked with the Department of Natural Resources, asking specifically about the goose feathers, and they confirmed it. No collecting goose feathers. In fact, no collecting of almost any feathers in the wild.

I’m paraphrasing here, but the law says that it’s not okay to collect feathers.

So, disregard all that stuff you’ve heard or read about gathering goose feathers out in the wild for use in projects and things. You can’t do it.

Need some goose feathers for a craft project? They’re available for sale in lots of craft and hobby shops. Yes, you can use feathers you buy at the craft store.

But no, you can’t pick up goose feathers from the park or the yard, even if they’re just lying there in the wet grass.

Those are from wild birds, and the wild birds (and their parts) are protected.

What do you tell your kids who want to take a feather home? They probably aren’t interested in the details of the statutes and treaties protecting various bird species. That’s too much info and more than most young ones are interested in.

Instead, tell your kids that dropped feathers are part of the natural world.

Other creatures may use them (maybe to build a nest or something?), so let’s leave them in place where they are.

Then go home and make some lemonade and grab the binoculars and go birdwatching in a nearby park or even in your yard.

Kids have a way of seeing right to the heart of things, and I’m betting they’ll be fine with that.

Pet cat Puddin’ gives thumbs up to ‘Nala’s World’ Wow! Mum read an awesome book about a cat who’s on a ’round the world trip with a guy on a bicycle. I’m not sure I want to travel on a bicycle — or at all — but it’s a grand adventure story.

KATHY And it’s not fiction.

MANOS PENN It’s true.

Nala was a tiny kitten, when Dean, a cyclist from Scotland, found her on the side of a mountain road in Bosnia, at least 10 miles from the nearest town. He couldn’t believe it when what he thought what might be a squeak in his rear wheel turned out to be a kitten meowing. How could she have turned up on a mountain road in the middle of nowhere?

Well, I can answer that question.

Someone in a pickup truck threw me into a bush in midtown Atlanta when I was a “wee thing” as Dean would say.

I bet that’s what happened to Nala, whom Dean named for the lioness in “The Lion King.”

What a lucky kitty. Not only did Dean hear her, but he also decided to take her along on his journey. He left Scotland, determined to cycle around the world with a friend. When his friend bailed on him, he went his merry way alone. Finding Nala meant he had a new companion. Maybe you’ve seen the video of their adventure on the youtube video posted by Dodo. If you haven’t, you don’t know what you’re missing.

Yes, Nala, is lucky, but so is Dean.

He says she’s given him a new outlook on life, and their relationship has changed him. I think all cats can have a positive influence on their peeps, given a chance, but this tale is an exceptional example of the power of one tiny kitty.

Dean and Nala sleep most nights in a tent, and Nala loves it. Again, I

might like spending a bit of time playing in a tent, but every night? No way.

I like my beds. The more Mum read, the more I learned about all the accouterments Nala has. She has toys and a harness and a pet carrier for the back of the bike, though she prefers riding up front on the handlebars where she can keep an eye on Dean and take in the scenery. The first day, she left the bike bag, climbed up his arm to his shoulders, and wrapped herself around his neck. How cute is that?

When she developed a chest cold after the two were caught in a downpour, they spent three weeks in a hostel instead of a tent so she could recover, and she enjoyed that too.

She’s quite a hit, not only with people the two encounter on the journey but also on Instagram and YouTube. Dean has GoPro camera plus a drone with a camera and is forever posting photos of their adventures.

Mum says she was skeptical about how good the book would be, but it turned out she couldn’t put it down.

Well, I could have told her that would be the case. What’s not to love about a book with a cat in it? She enjoyed it so much, she now follows Nala and Dean on FaceBook at 1bike1world. Yup, she’s hooked.

You know my Mum writes the Dickens & Christie cozy mystery series, and Christie, the sassy black cat in her books, rides in a backpack when her owner goes on walks. Thankfully, Mum hasn’t tried that with me. I’ve made it clear I’m happy observing the world from the screened porch and Dad’s lap.

I’m a little worried, though, because Mum has a bicycle with a pouch on the front. Goodness knows what I’ll do if she gets the idea I need a bicycle ride.

Repeat after me, “No bike, no way.”

First night out, after long time gone We wove our way slowly in and out of the late afternoon crowd on our way to get in line for the concert. It was humid and not so comfortable, but at least the heat was beginning to recede.

RAY APPEN I was acutely aware Publisher Emeritus of my lack of sunray@appenmediagroup.com glasses, the ones I had not been able to locate prior to leaving the house.

All around us, folks were in shorts, golf shirts, tee shirts, sandals, Braves hats, halter tops — some “appropriate” and some not so much — jeans, pirate bandanas, scatterings of various band shirts and sunglasses (everyone except me).

Everyone chatted, mingled, peoplewatched, and generally behaved wonderfully, waiting. Yes, waiting. Waiting, like adults should wait, adults with their heads screwed on properly, respectfully and civilly. That sounds kinda similar to another (historical - 1969) concert/festival from another lifetime, no? Except that at that festival, there wouldn’t have been a single cell phone — in contrast to today where those phones appear invisibly bound with unbreakable cables to almost every ear or hand in sight. Those phones bug me.

What was it that Nobel Prize winner (in 1975 for Economics) Herbert Simon said?

“What information (i.e. use of cell phone today) consumes is rather obvious; it consumes the attention of its recipients.”

That is, it detaches, separates/isolates from the immediate, the here and now, the essence of things —humanity

— and only replaces it with a shallow substitute, a wholly unsatisfying one at that. We miss so much that we can never recover because of the distraction of those phones.

Anyway, after we got inside the gate and got situated in our seats, my old friend, “crowd-generated anxiety,” paid me a visit.

“Hiya, long time. Wasup? Kinda crowded isn’t it. Not many exits are there?”

“Go away. Go far away, I don’t have the time to pay attention to you right now. Get!“ I replied.

Added to that was the other penny in everyone’s shoes, that awkwardness that I sense half that the world is beginning to experience — that transition of going from a world of pandemic-generated chaos, isolation, disruption and fear, back to the more familiar world of non-pandemic dysfunction.

Moving through the queues to get into the concert, people seemed at ease. No one seemed to be in a hurry — for once. Being in a hurry, I think, is some sort of a disease. It is maybe one of the worst aspects of living in our lovely amazing North Fulton so many of us call home. Especially beguiling are those in such a big hurry that they ride bumpers, honk, weave in and out of traffic and generally make public fools of themselves. Me, me, me, me. And, of course, the majority have no reason to be in a hurry. Most of the time, they are just impatient, myopic and can’t help it.

We made it past security and then, Yuenglings in hand, we managed to get to our seats without spilling or overly disrupting the folks already in place.

Giant fans were blowing air down from above. The night looked inviting; we were going to enjoy this first night out since the pandemic. That was my

thought. And the bands, more than a couple times kept saying how ecstatic they were to be back out in front of a live audience. It’s been a long, long road home I kept thinking.

I felt awkward though, and my ol’ buddy anxiety continued to poke me in the ribs. How was this going to go?

Then I started inventorying the crowd.

That’s when the guy with his wife in the seats next to us, the one that arrived late and then insisted that we were possibly in their seats — until he realized we weren’t — leaned over and asked me if I noticed how “old” everybody was.

“You believe this? Who goes to concerts with nothing but senior citizens?

Did they let out all the assisted livings at once?”

I just grinned and shook my head, but if the truth be told, I was thinking the same thing, including about him (even though he was at least 10 years younger than me)!

I wanted to leave before the encore to beat the traffic, but Christina vetoed that.

“I want to hear “Sail Away,” she said.

“OK,” I shouted back, thinking that I can probably make it just a little longer.

It was nice, darn nice to “get back out,” I thought later; it definitely has been a long time coming. But gosh, that crowd was so old, and Styx surely must all be grandparents now. Glad I’m not like that.

I don’t even recall what music we listened to in the car as we drove home that night. Didn’t matter though, because we got out — with people without masks — and drank a brew, chatted and had a time that resembled normalcy.

“Come sail away, again,” I thought.

Couldn’t get that tune out of my head — even at my age!

OBITUARY Herschel Allen, Jr. passed away peacefully on April 11, 2020. He was born in Monticello GA, November 30, 1932, to Herschel and Josie Allen and was the devoted husband of Betsy Pritchett Allen of Atlanta.

He was a loving, gentle ALLEN truth-teller with an infectious smile.

Herschel enjoyed playing every sport available at Monticello High School. He attended Davidson College, where he also lettered in several sports. He was a class officer, a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa, a Leadership Honor Society. He loved all things Davidson. During college he worked at Glacier National Park where a lifelong love for National Parks began.

Furthering his education, he attended Columbia Seminary where he received a Th.M in Pastoral Counseling and was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister. He obtained additional training at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, KS, and The American Foundation of Religion and Psychiatry in New York. He was a Charter Member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.

As a lifelong pastoral counselor, Herschel loved being able to work with and help people at times in their lives when his skills made a difference for them.

His greatest gift was loving and caring about all people, and his greatest talent through his counseling career was helping his clients learn to love and care for themselves. Among others, he worked at The Bradley Center and the Medical Center in Columbus, GA, and the Georgia Baptist Health Care System and the Peachtree Counseling Center in Atlanta.

Herschel is survived by his wife Betsy; his children Scott Allen (Leslie); Suzanne Allen Valdivia (Raphael); Ashley Walters (BJ); Catherine Livingston (Wayne) and his grandchildren Alex, Elliott, Grace, Claire, Caroline, Callie and Hunter. He was predeceased by his son Anderson H. Allen.

A long-delayed funeral service will be held at 11:00 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree St. Atlanta GA 30308
