Murals celebrate Women’s history

DUNWOODY, Ga. — Art is how Elma Orr connects with and serves her community.

She’s been an artist for more than 20 years and a Dunwoody resident for 12. Orr is one of six artists who created a mural for the city to display at the Brook Run Park skate park as part of a Women’s History Month exhibit.

It’s the fourth mural display the city has hosted and Orr has made a piece for each one.

“The project just started last year, and it was one of those things that spurred out from COVID,” Recreation Program Supervisor Rachel Waldron said. “We wanted people to be able to go to the park and interact safely with our programming and we thought, what

DUNWOODY, Ga. — The City of Dunwoody has reached an agreement with Camp Run-A-Mutt following multiple noise complaints from nearby residents.

The business, which opened in May 2018, touts itself as the premier cage-free dog day care and boarding with 11,000 square feet for dogs to play and socialize.

In 2021, it was voted in the Georgia Business Journal as the best dog day care and boarding in Dunwoody.

But on March 1, the city and Camp Run-A-Mutt filed a consent order in municipal court, limiting the hours the dogs are allowed to be outside.

The consent order states Camp RunA-Mutt will restrict the dogs to outdoor activities between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Monday through Saturday, and no dogs will be allowed outside for outdoor activities on Sunday. “Outdoor activities” do not include a single, non-barking, supervised dog that was taken outside to use the bathroom.

Man makes two trips to steal Ulta perfumes DUNWOODY, Ga. –– Police responded to a shoplifting call March 5 at Ulta Beauty on Perimeter Center. Loss prevention stated a male entered the store, grabbed several bottles of various fragrances and placed them in a plastic bag. He exited the store without paying. The items were estimated to have a total value of approximately $900.

The same male came into the store again, grabbed several bottles of fragrances, placed them in a bag and left the store without paying.

Loss prevention said she believed the male has committed the same offense at several Ulta Beauty locations throughout Metro Atlanta. She was unable to provide video surveillance of the incident.

Man arrested for theft of over $682 in items DUNWOODY, Ga. –– Shoplifting was reported at Nordstrom on Ashford Dunwoody Road March 8. The male suspect was detained by loss prevention, and they stated the suspect was seen on camera in the jewelry section, where he selected a pair of earrings. He went past all points of purchase and was confronted by staff.

The total value of the items stolen was $682. Nordstrom advised that they want to prosecute. He was arrested and transported to DeKalb County Jail.

Catalytic converter taken from car parked in lot DUNWOODY, Ga. –– Police responded to a larceny call March 7 in the parking lot of Perimeter Mall. The victim stated her vehicle, a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, was parked outside of the Macy’s.

When she returned from her car after shopping, she started her vehicle and noticed her car was making a strange noise and emitting a funny scent. She took it to a mechanic, and he said the vehicle was missing its catalytic

converter and oxygen sensors.

The total cost for repairs to the vehicle was estimated at $3,000. There was no video footage of the incident and police have no suspects.

Women steal bottles of perfume at store DUNWOODY, Ga. –– Shoplifting was reported at Sephora on Ashford Dunwoody Road March 10. The store’s loss prevention investigator stated she saw three females enter the store and leave with 12 bottles of perfume without paying. The total value of all 12 fragrance bottles was estimated at $1,338.

Thief flees mall store with men’s underwear DUNWOODY, Ga. –– Shoplifting was reported March 7 at Von Maur department store at Perimeter Mall.

The suspect was monitored on store video surveillance – a 6’1”, white male – and stole a three packs of Polo underwear. The male was stopped by loss prevention but he evaded detention and fled the mall.

DeKalb County police nab three suspects, meth and guns

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The DeKalb County Police Department Narcotics/Vice Unit conducted a major drug bust and arrested three suspects near Dunwoody Crossing on March 15.

The bust led authorities to seize 157 pounds of crystal methamphetamine, 152 pounds of powder methamphetamine, 8 pounds of cocaine, 4 pounds of heroin mixed with fentanyl, 5 ounces of cocaine mixed with fentanyl, 183 pounds of marijuana, 900 Xanax pills and 2 gallons of liquid meth.

Additionally, detectives recovered five rifles, four handguns, and “a large amount” of money.

In a March 16 announcement on Facebook, the DeKalb County Police Department stated all three suspects were charged with trafficking offenses in relation to the incident but did not release their names or specific charges.

Anyone with information regarding the sales, use or possession of illegal narcotics within DeKalb County, is asked to contact the DeKalb County Drug Hotline at 770-724-7762.

City Council settles door issue with commercial development

By JEFFREY ALBERTSON newsroom@appenmedia.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The March 14 Dunwoody City Council meeting included a zoning amendment vote, construction contract discussions and a ceremony for three city officers. It was the second consecutive meeting all council members and the mayor attended in-person.

After more than a month in limbo, a rezoning amendment at 600 Ashwood Parkway received approval.

Discussions about the development’s glass doors and a pedestrian path were the focus of the council’s concern at both February meetings. The rezoning amendment as approved was broken into two conditions, one focused on glass doors and another addressed the pedestrian walkway.

At the Feb. 28 meeting, significant discussion centered around tenants in the building having two glass doors. Those concerns were removed from condition 24 and revised to require all tenants have glass doors facing Ashwood Parkway. Any restaurants or bars that may occupy that building must have glass doors that are accessible to the general public and be open during business hours.

Condition 24 passed 6 to 1, with Councilman Tom Lambert opposed.

Condition 28, which dealt with pedestrian access to a path, passed by a 4-3 margin with council members Tom Lambert, Stacey Harris and Joe Seconder voting against. Updated renderings presented by the developer showed a truncated pedestrian path in the development.

Also at the meeting, three construction contracts were discussed for improvements at Brook Run Park and at two city intersections.

Last year, the city solicited bids to construct new sidewalks to connect parking at Brook Run Park’s Great Lawn to the amphitheater. The Parks and Recreation Department received an initial bid of $48,145 from Blount Construction Company, which was the lowest of three

The department asked the same company for an estimate to complete a set of stairs.

The combined cost of this contract, if approved, would be $62,822. A contingency up to $69,105 was listed in the same memo.

One road improvement plan carries a $1.97 million cost and would add a left turning lane at the intersection of Chamblee Dunwoody and Womack roads, close to the Dunwoody library. The plan would lay the groundwork for a future right turn lane, meant to reduce congestion at the busy intersection.

The other road plan centered on finalizing design plans for updates to an intersection between Mt. Vernon Road and Corners Drive. The plan requested $94,500 with a $10,000 contingency. The current plan calls for the widening of Mt. Vernon Road, updating sidewalks and new

Dunwoody Farmers Market returns to Brook Run Park DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody Farmers Market has returned to Brook Run Park, offering residents fresh, natural food every Saturday.

This year’s farmers market welcomes new vendors from across Georgia, including Watsonia Farms strawberries and produce, Dickey Farms peaches and JavaGenesis organic coffee. As always, the market offers locally grown produce, meats, eggs, cheeses, baked goods, honeys and other foods.

The market is open from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday from March to

December. In addition to food, attendees can enjoy kid’s activities, wellness seminars and get tips on gardening and composting.

Council members also took time to honor three Dunwoody City police officers for rescuing a 91-year-old man trapped in a house fire on March 6.

Dunwoody Police Chief Billy Grogan and DeKalb County Fire Chief Darnell Fullum recognized Sgt. Josh Sanders, Officer Eric Haviland and Officer Will Smith for their bravery in responding to a 3:45 a.m. 911 call to a fire on Wilder Court. The officers entered the smoke-filled residence, removed the man and began resuscitation. The police arrived about three minutes after the 911 call was placed and the fire department arrived moments later.

“We certainly owe a debt of gratitude to these three officers, the firefighters that were there and the ambulance personnel as well,” Chief Grogan said.

Fullum presented the officers with a fire department challenge coin and joked his department is hiring firefighters, if the officers were interested.

“Often times (between) the fire service and the police service there is a lot of banter that goes back and forth about the work that we do, but we do know at the end of the day what we are all here to do is save lives,” Chief Fullum said.

“What these three gentlemen did that night, I just wanted to be here to honor.”

Metro Atlanta gets new 943 area code METRO ATLANTA — As if 770, 678, 470 and 404 weren’t enough, a new area code just arrived in Metro Atlanta: 943.

The Georgia Public Service Commission approved the new area code to appear in the region beginning March 15.

Telephone customers with area codes 770, 678, 470 and 404 may be assigned the 943 area code if they get a new phone service or an additional line, but existing phone numbers won’t change.

Alpharetta, Roswell, Dunwoody,

Johns Creek, Cumming and Sandy Springs will all host 943 numbers, along with cities such as Duluth, Lawrenceville, Gainesville, Marietta and Peachtree City.

A news release from the city of Alpharetta urges those in the affected area to ensure their phones and services recognize 943 as a valid area code and continue to store or program phone numbers as 10 digits.

Stage Door Theatre to present ‘Circle Mirror Transformation’ DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody’s Stage Door Theatre will perform “Circle Mirror Transformation” by Annie Baker beginning April 1.

The play focuses on four New Englanders who enroll in a six-week drama class in a community center and begin to experiment with games, presenting the audience with “the antic sadness of a motley quintet.”

The Obie Award-winning show is described by The New York Times as “absorbingly, unblinkingly and sharply funny.”

Stage Door is partnering with artists from the Spruill Center for the Arts for the show’s design. Select instructors are loaning their handcrafted jewelry for costumes, as well as art pieces that will decorate the set of the community center.

“We are thrilled to be working with our friends and neighbors at the Spruill Arts Center to bring the feeling of a real community center to life with Circle Mirror Transformation,” Stage Door Executive Director Justin Ball said.

The show welcomes back Stage Door ensemble artists from its returning 202122 season ensemble while also welcoming additional talents.

Remembering the Regenstein home After writing about the historic Atlanta store Regenstein’s, and the Regenstein family who lived on Mount Vernon Road, I heard from Barbara Regenstein. Barbara is the daughter of Jean and Robert Regenstein and grew up in the house at 1214 Mount VALERIE Vernon Highway along with her sister Susan.

BIGGERSTAFF Robert and Jean Regenstein met at Barksdale Field in Shreveport, Louisiana where he was serving in the Army Air Corps. He was a lieutenant when they married in Valdosta, Georgia, in 1942. In 1946, the couple bought a home on 10 acres along Mount Vernon Highway in Sandy Springs.

The Regenstein property had 7 acres of pasture, an orchard, barbeque pit, and badminton court. The couple started out with cows at their country home, but they later kept horses. Barbara remembers she and her sister Susan riding horseback from their home to Thompson’s country store at Mount Vernon Road and Chamblee Dunwoody Road.

One of the girls’ favorite past times was playing under the large fort formed by the muscadine arbor in their yard.

Major and Marie Payne were neighbors of the Regenstein family. The Payne home was on Mount Vernon in the area that crosses Ga. 400 today. The home was an 1869 farmhouse previously owned by Walter and Harriet Austin Williams and relocated in 1985 to Sandy Springs Circle.

The Glenn family lived down Abernathy Road. Their son kept sheep for his 4H project on the Regenstein property. George and Polly Coleman lived directly across from the Regenstein driveway. George Coleman built their Mount Vernon home, as well as their next home. Polly Coleman was an organist who performed in the community. Other neighbors were the Ruckers and Fergusons.

Nearby on Spalding Drive was the home and horse farm of the Christian family, where Barbara’s parents sometimes bought horses. Jean Regenstein once brought home two horses from the Christian farm, holding the rope out the window of the car.

Jean Regenstein was a founding member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church. Barbara recalls attending fundraising events for the church including pancake breakfasts at Guy Webb School on Hammond Drive near where Ga. 400 is today. Jean was also active in the Sandy Springs Garden Club.

Robert Regenstein was a leader in the Kiwanis Club, DeKalb Hospital Authority and at Pace Academy where Barbara and Susan went to school. He was on the Board of Directors of C&S Bank.

A few of the women who worked at Regenstein’s purchased a baby-size baseball uniform for Barbara, and her parents brought her to the Sandy Springs field dressed in the baseball uniform. Robert Regenstein was an umpire at the baseball field.

Robert Regenstein was instrumental in bringing City of Atlanta water to Sandy Springs. A celebration was held on July 4, 1950, with a baseball game and square dance. Atlanta Mayor William B. Hartsfield

The Regensteins lived in their Mount Vernon home until 1979. Barbara looks back at her childhood on Mount Vernon Road fondly.

“We had lots of fun!” she said. “We played baseball in our front yard, which was so big no one could hit a ball into the street…therefore no worry about cars. It was a great place to grow up.”

Construction begins in earnest on Roswell History Museum

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Historical Society’s 25-year dream is finally coming to fruition.

Construction began in early February to transform the second floor of the Roswell Cultural Arts Center into a museum solely dedicated to housing items, such as textiles, artifacts, rare books and photographs, that detail the founding of the City of Roswell in 1854.

Roswell Historical Society President Kevin Bamford said that for decades the society shared the second floor of the Roswell Cultural Arts with the Georgia Ensemble Theatre and partnered with spaces like the Visitor’s Center for small showings.

But in 2021, Bamford decided it was time to push for a permanent space.

“It’s called Historic Roswell, we’re the Roswell Historical Society, we have all these collections, we need to get it out so people can see it,” Bamford said. “We need to have a space where people can touch it, feel it, know the stories throughout history, and I really worked hard to bring City Council members in and understand that story.”

Bamford said he received a lot of positive feedback from the Roswell City Council at a budget presentation last year, and because the Roswell Cultural Arts Center is a city-owned building, the city agreed to spend approximately $150,000 to renovate the top floor for the museum.

Building Four Fabrication, a fullservice exhibits and display firm in Atlanta specializing in custom-fabricated visual designs and environments as well as hospitality and custom artwork, is working on the build-out. Bamford said that should last until the end of March or mid-April.

The project has already been pushed back due to supply-chain issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Bamford said the goal is to unveil the museum at the end of the summer or early fall.

Right now, a $75,000 capital campaign is underway to help raise the remaining funds necessary to complete the museum’s design and implementation plan.

Bamford said the society has raised about half of that total so far.

“I think it’s just an exciting time,” Bamford said. “A lot of people have been hoping for this to happen at some point, and I know our surrounding sister cities have been able to put money towards opening similar things. … It was time for Roswell. Roswell is where it started.”

In 2018, the City of Alpharetta opened the Alpharetta and Old Milton County History Museum at 2 Park Plaza.

The museum was more than four years in the making and houses a permanent collection of artifacts, interpretive displays and a Stories Project kiosk where visitors can hear 70 local residents speak.

The museum was funded by the City of Alpharetta, developed in partnership with the Alpharetta Historical Society, and put together under a more-than $300,000 contract by Malone Design/ Fabrication, a Decatur-based creator of museum and visitor center exhibits.

Bamford and Elaine DeNiro, archivist for the Roswell Historical Society and City of Roswell Research Library and Archives, said the Roswell museum will be similar in that it will have a space for permanent displays as well as for rotating exhibits that celebrate different milestones in Roswell history.

DeNiro said she’s excited about all the new opportunities the community will have.

“Between the archives, the research library and museum, it’s going to be an amazing facility,” DeNiro said. “We’ll no longer have to be trotting around with our stuff and taking it across town.

Now we can have a beautiful space with all our resources right there. The other amazing thing because of all this is that people have been contacting me to donate additional photographs and artifacts because they know now that they’re going to be seen at some point.”

Cemetery restoration continues

In the meantime, the society continues with efforts to restore the Old Roswell Cemetery on Woodstock Steet, which is under the guidance of Roswell Historical Society Project Chair Janet Johnson.

In April 2021, the cemetery, officially called Methodist Cemetery, was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The register is the federal government’s official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance.

The Old Roswell Cemetery is only the fifth property in the city to achieve the designation. The other properties are Bulloch Hall, Barrington Hall, Smith Plantation and the Historic District.

Bamford said it took five years and three submissions to get the Old Roswell Cemetery on the list.

Johns Creek Symphony schedules performance of Scandinavian works

By SYDNEY DANGREMOND sydney@appenmedia.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Melodies from northern Europe will fill Johns Creek Methodist Church March 26 as the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra performs its spring concert, “A Scandinavian Tour.”

“If most of the concertgoers are like me, in that they’ve never visited Scandinavia,” Music Director J. Wayne Baughman said, “then for me, the next best thing to being in a place is experiencing the culture of that place, seeing artworks, or in our case, visualizing what those Scandinavian countries and landscapes look like through the music of Scandinavian composers.”

The show will be led by Maestro Baughman and will feature Concertmaster Adelaide Federici as a lead soloist, performing Sibelius’ Violin Concerto.

As concertmaster, Federici serves as the maestro’s right hand — she also happens to be his daughter — helping tune the orchestra before the performance and taking over conducting when needed. She has been a member of the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra since its founding 15 years ago.

When she’s not performing on her 12-year-old violin in Johns Creek, Federici plays as assistant principal second of the Atlanta Opera Orchestra, as a member of the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, in the Edgewood String Quartet and regularly performs with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Federici also teaches her craft as Kennesaw State University School of Music’s artist-in-residence in violin and is a selfdescribed “freelance violinist.” Federici has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music and spent time in Europe studying at Holland Music Sessions and the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

She’s played with acclaimed orchestras in the classical music realm for decades but has also recorded with nonclassical performers like Bruce Springsteen and the band Train.

Joining the family business

Federici’s passion for music is in her blood. Her late mother, Lynn Baughman, a violin teacher, had Federici learning to play the instrument at 2 and a-half years old.

Baughman was a proponent of the Suzuki method of teaching.

“The idea is to teach children to play an instrument like you’d learn how to speak, so a lot of early exposure is key,” Federici said. “I think I was her first guinea pig … my first violin was a Cracker Jacks box filled with newspaper, and I would just practice holding it under my chin.”

Eventually she moved up from the Cracker Jacks box, but she never took her passion seriously until late in high school.

“Growing up I never wanted to be a violinist,” Federici said. “I was going to be a doctor and was super into math and

The City of Dunwoody has reached an agreement with Camp Run-A-Mutt over noise complaints from nearby residents. The dog day care and boarding business opened at the Shops of Dunwoody on Chamblee Dunwoody Road in May 2018.

Neighbors: Continued from Page 1 Additionally, the consent order states Camp Run-A-Mutt will strengthen its policy on barking dogs so that if a dog barks three times, it will draw immediate attention from a handler, and if the dog barks a fourth time, it will be restricted indoors for the remainder of the day.

“This agreement shall not be construed as an admission by the respondent that a nuisance has occurred,” the order states.

A hearing was initially scheduled on March 1 for the city’s petition to abate a public nuisance, but both parties agreed on the consent order the night before. A status conference is slated for Sept. 14 to determine whether there will be a hearing on the matter.

Neighbors voice complaints Nearby residents have been up in arms over Camp Run-A-Mutt ever since the business announced plans to open at the former Dunwoody Academy child day care center in the back of the Shops of 0Dunwoody in 2017.

At the time, residents argued they were worried the loud barking would carry into their backyards and potentially drive down property values. But while city code allows commercial property, including animal care facilities, to be within 100 feet of residential property, the closest residence to Camp Run-A-Mutt is more than 200 feet away.

Records show neighbors from Trail-

ridge Way in the affluent Dunwoody West neighborhood submitted several complaints about the dogs’ “habitual barking” at Camp Run-A-Mutt to the city’s Planning and Zoning Division on May 24, 2021.

City of Dunwoody spokeswoman Jennifer Boettcher said that case was handled separately from the nuisance filing on March 1.

Code Enforcement Supervisor Shane Peeples issued Camp Run-A-Mutt a verbal warning as a result of the neighbors’ complaints, and in June 2021, the Planning and Zoning Division cited Camp Run-A-Mutt to appear in Dunwoody Municipal Court for possible noise violations.

The city states this is the highest level of enforcement the Code Compliance Division can take.

Facility spent $10,000 to mitigate sound While the matter was still pending, Camp Run-A-Mutt took several steps to be a “good neighbor” and spent upwards of $10,000 in sound mitigation measures to address the complaints.

In a letter sent to the Dunwoody City Council and city staff in August 2021, Shaun Adams, a former attorney with Andersen, Tate and Carr, stated that Camp Run-A-Mutt maintained that any noise stemming from the property during acceptable hours of operation fell within the reasonable noise expectation of a doggy day care with outdoor facilities of its size and scope.

“Despite this,” Adams stated, “the client desires to be a good neighbor and a continued asset to the Dunwoody community and has worked diligently to

implement sound mitigation measures that do not alter the service and care that their customers expect when leaving their dogs with them during the day.”

Adams stated that after the complaints were filed, Camp Run-A-Mutt hired a professional to educate the handlers on techniques to reduce barking, purchased additional equipment and toys to keep the dogs entertained and proceeded to send unruly dogs home.

The business also hired more staff, started using silent dog whistles, conducted research and review of best practices for similar dog day cares, started offering private training for customers to help them control dog barking and installed misters to keep dogs cool and settled during warm days.

Additionally, Camp Run-A-Mutt installed acoustiblok, a type of soundproofing insulation and acoustic insulation, on the back fence to block noise directed toward the nearby neighborhood. Adams stated the acoustiblok typically takes 8 to 12 weeks for production, but Camp Run-A-Mutt paid to have it expedited and installed.

Adams stated Camp Run-A-Mutt received more than 45 letters and emails from customers in support of their operation and the service they provide to the surrounding community soon after the complaints were filed.

In December 2021, Camp Run-A-Mutt pleaded no contest, and the city dropped all fines based on the cost the business spent on noise mitigation measures.

Camp Run-A-Mutt’s attorneys did not respond to the Crier’s request for comment on the March 1 public nuisance filing by press time on March 21.

That summer, she went to music camp at the Meadowmount School of Music in upstate New York.

For six weeks, Federici practiced for five hours a day. Despite the “terrible” food, she said, her camp experience was a turning point.

“I was playing chamber music with other people who had really similar interests and … you just improved so fast and you’re working with these great teachers,” Federici said. “After that I decided that I did want to major in music after all.”

When she returned home, she dropped the extra math and science classes she had loaded on her schedule, instead leaving herself free periods so she could practice her craft.

She never looked back.

Now, after nearly 50 years of playing the violin, Federici has passed a love of music on to her two children.

Her daughter plays the violin and dances, and her son plays the cello and is on his school’s soccer team, Federici said.

Sibelius is special

Studying music for so long, it’s hard for Federici or her father, Baughman, to pick music favorites, but both said the piece Federici is playing at the concert March 26, Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is one of their favorite concertos.

“It’s in D minor, which, for anyone old enough to know Spinal Tap, they know that’s the saddest of all keys, and it’s just so beautiful,” Federici said. “It’s just one of those pieces that is truly gut wrenching, and the last movement is very exciting too.”

Baughman said he feels lucky to watch his daughter play and to perform alongside her.

“We both love this piece, and for me, it’s a privilege to play with a musician who’s as good as she is, and the fact that she’s my offspring makes it very special,” Baughman said. “I obviously regret that her mother is not here to hear that in

person, even though I suspect that by some miracle… she will know that her daughter is playing, and she’ll listen in. She might also have some criticism depending on how the performance goes.”

The admiration goes both ways.

Growing up, Federici said, Baughman was an awesome example of a professional musician. She said the inspiration never waned.

“He’s such a great musician, and the Johns Creek Symphony is such a dream for him and to see him in his 70s following his dreams still … he’s always improving and it’s so inspiring to see that and to be a part of that,” Federici said.

“There will likely be tears… getting to play a whole concerto, and one of our favorites together… there’s going to be a lot of emotions.”

It began with a month-long exhibit of murals honoring Black History Month in February, then Women’s History Month in March. Both exhibits returned for a second year with all new artwork.

The pieces, commissioned by the city, also get put on display in October for Dunwoody Arts & Culture Month, Waldron said.

Alongside Orr’s piece, which features NASA astronauts Joan Higginbotham and Kathleen Rubins in front of the International Space Station, are five other 8 by 4-foot murals in varying artistic styles.

“Every mural is so different from the next, it’s just a really cool way for everyone to get something out of each piece,” Waldron said.

Before the art came to hang on the fence at Brook Run, the city put out a proposal and a call for artists. Interested individuals wrote a statement, shared their backgrounds and gave their pitch for a mural that would fit the Women’s History Month theme, Waldron said.

From there, the artists were selected and given the canvas, a 32-squarefoot wooden board and accompanying primer.

Then they created their murals.

Orr got her idea when she was reading technology news, she said. Before she became an artist, Orr worked in the technology field, and she likes to keep up on new developments in the industry.

She stumbled onto the NASA website and astronauts Higginbotham and Rubins caught her attention.

Orr said she wanted her mural to be inspirational for her 18-year-old daughter and other young women in the city.

“To be a NASA astronaut, you don’t need to just be smart, but you also have to be very courageous,” Orr said.

She hopes her piece will serve as the “extra push” needed to help them

dream bigger dreams for themselves, Orr said.

It took Orr between seven and 10 days to complete the mural, she said, but she had been working on the concept for longer.

Dunwoody Mayor Pro Tem John Heneghan featured Orr and her mural as the subject of a recent blog post.

In it, Heneghan calls Orr someone he admires and finds inspirational.

The two met when Orr coordinated a homecoming dance for Dunwoody High School students after the school cancelled the event citing COVID-19 numbers, Heneghan said.

When the city posted images of artists featured in the mural exhibit, Heneghan recognized her and decided to write about her in his blog.

“Elma, Dunwoody is more beautiful because of what you do but we are all richer because of who you are, and I thank you for generously sharing your gifts and talents with the community,” Heneghan said in the post. “We are all better for it.”

After moving to the city from Grenada, Mississippi, Orr said she had a hard time assimilating. She was seeking the same kind of art community she had before when she finally found the Dunwoody Fine Arts Association.

The group opened her up to the rest of the Dunwoody community, Orr said.

“I started to be more involved in the community because before then I was kind of lost,” Orr said.

Since joining the DFAA, Orr has been involved with many art projects around the city including the murals and some picnic tables she painted for local organizations who needed more outdoor seating to mitigate virus spread.

She said she has plans to continue to serve her community through her passion.

And Dunwoody plans to continue its public art exhibits, Waldron said.

OBITUARY Jane Autry, age 90, lifelong resident of Dunwoody, GA, peacefully entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.

Funeral services for Jane will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Dunwoody Baptist Church, with Pastors Allen Jackson and Allen Taliaferro officiating. A private burial service will follow for family attendance at New Hope Cemetery, Dunwoody, GA. The family will gather with friends prior to the service from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the church.

A descendant of one of Dunwoody’s earliest founding families, the Spruills, Jane was born July 18, 1931, to the late Walter Lane Anderson and the late Lucy Carpenter Anderson; also preceding Jane in death were her beloved husband of 64 years, Clarence Autry; her son, David Andrew Autry; her daughter, Brenda Diane Autry; and brother-inlaw, Edwin Parker.

Jane was a lifelong and charter member of Dunwoody Baptist Church.

She was a graduate of Chamblee High School Class of 1948. She was the secretary/bookkeeper for Dunwoody Elementary School under several principals and later transitioned to the Occupational Education Center in Dunwoody, ultimately retiring after 30 years with the DeKalb County Board of Education. After retirement, Jane and Clarence spent many happy hours on a Honda Goldwing motorcycle, traveling all over North America, from Florida, to Canada, to California. When not traveling, Jane made sure everyone was always well fed by hosting countless family gatherings and cooking in the church kitchen for Wednesday night suppers and other church events.

Jane is survived by daughters, Denise Autry, Linda Moore and husband Jason, and Nancy Maki; beloved grandchildren, Brian Maki and wife Tasha, Jay Moore and wife Caroline, Kevin Maki and wife Sandra, and Laura Moore Mattison and husband Blake; cherished great-grandchildren, Emily, Kayla, Nora, Andrew, Caleb, and Lea; brother, Kenneth Anderson and wife Alvi; and sister, Carolyn Parker.
