Austin Elementary moves to new location By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — Students at Austin Elementary began the new year with a new building, moving into their Roberts Drive location Jan. 6. “Although we have waited a long time, the fruits of our labor have finally paid off,” Principal Ann Cullbreath said in a letter to parents. “Our new facility is amazing!” Cullbreath thanked the Austin Eagle Foundation and Parent Teacher Organization for working to make the transition seamless. “Our ‘Momma Movers,’ room parents and classroom volunteers worked tirelessly and we could not have accomplished our move without them,” she said. al procedures can be found at austines. dekalb.k12.ga.us. Although the new facility for Austin Elementary School has the capacity for 450 students more than the old location, Dunwoody’s public school overcrowding problems are far from solved. The DeKalb County School District is in the process of redistricting its elementary schools. After three public input meetings, the staff has presented its recommendation, a plan that attempts to distribute overcrowding across schools more evenly and moves about 100 students from Hightower Elementary to outside the Dunwoody cluster. A first read of the superintendent’s redistricting plan was on the agenda for the School Board’s Jan. 13 meeting. A final plan is expected to be adopted in February. It is set to go into effect August 2020.
