It’s said that “money does not buy happiness,” but it takes money to buy a stationary bike or other investments in self-improvement and healthy living that may add years beyond your scheduled expiration date. The famous contempo rary philosopher Bo Derek once observed, “Whoever said money can’t buy happi ness didn’t know where to shop.”

Why the differences? Highest life expectancy was found largely in the West ern and Northeastern states and included Minnesota and Florida. Perhaps locales conducive to outdoor activities encour age healthier living. In states with lower life expectancies, concentrated poverty in areas that spur unhealthy living contrib utes to shorter life spans.

It takes careful planning to ‘prosper and live long’

pared to 2019. There’s increased concern about patterns of marijuana use, facts of interest to parents who want to see their teenagers grow up, prosper, and live long.

A 2018 study indicated that longerterm use of cannabis, extending from age 18 into the late 20s or beyond, was asso ciated with “increased risk of self-report ed health problems at age 50.” Problems included psychiatric and psychological disorders, use of more lethal drugs, alcoholism and physical illnesses. With harmful drug use of any kind, in addition to the cost to purchase the substances, overall earning power and financial wellbeing suffers. Financial poverty and “poverty of spirit” contributes to short ened life spans. If you have just turned 18 and are off to college, a work career, or the military, don’t let your dreams of success and financial independence go up in smoke or vapor!

In 2020, heart disease, cancer and COVID-19 were the three top causes of death. Unintentional injuries such as drug overdoses, homicide and diabetes also contributed to lower life expectancies com

What we are talking about is “longrange financial life planning.” Looking out over the next 10 years, and 10 years beyond that, what challenges, positive or negative, do you foresee? Your answer to that question starts the conversation.

If you are approaching retirement and want to take an around-the-world cruise or a dawn balloon ride over the Seren geti, have a three-to-five-year reserve in insured money market accounts, taxfree municipal bond portfolios, or other low volatility reserves, so you can spend “Freedom Money” with peace of mind even when your stock portfolio is down in value.

By the way, Bo Derek is now 65 years old. That’s how fast time flies. Plan ahead!

LEWIS J. WALKER, CFP

In the original Star Trek series, actor Leonard Nimoy, playing the char acter Spock, popu larized the Vulcan salute, “Live long and prosper!” The point was to wish someone good health and good fortune. How ever, given a recent Wall Street Journal report on life expectancy in America (8/23/2022), the greeting is best reversed as an adieu for real-world earthlings, “Prosper and live long.”

Many advisers promote achieving financial independence by your anticipated retirement date. Since “retirement” means different things to different people, why not pursue financial independence at the earli est date possible? Mitch Anthony, in his book, “The New Retirementality: Planning Your Life and Living Your Dreams...at Any Age You Want,” 5th Edition (Wiley, 2020), diagramed a financial rendition of Abra ham Maslow’s famous Hierarchy of Needs.

At the base of the pyramid is “Survival Money.” Once you earn and accumulate enough money after tax to meet basic needs, the next level is “Safety Money,” reserves to “meet life’s unexpected turns.” Next comes “Freedom Money,” spend ing on things that bring “enjoyment and fulfillment to life.” Like trying to achieve Diamond level in Delta Airline’s “hierarchy of frequent flyer perks” aimed at traveling

THE INVESTMENT COACH

Next comes a focus on the best alter native to answering each challenge, fol lowed by deducing the resources needed to power the best alternative for meeting challenges.Lastly, what are your expectations? What do you want to experience when it’s all said and done?

Before you reach the Freedom Money level, you have to cover the basics and have a sufficient “safety money” reserve before you can begin to wisely and prudently pay for things in the “freedom and fun catego ries” without running up debt. Use credit cards to accumulate frequent flyer points, hotel nights, or cash back, but paying usu rious interest rates on credit card debt isn’t freedom, it’s servitude.

There is a distinct link between finan cial stability and healthy wellbeing and longevity. Average life expectancy at birth in 2020 was pegged at 77 years, down 1.8 years compared to 2019 due to COVID-19 and other factors. Where you live may make a difference. Hawaii had the highest life expectancy at 80.7 years; Mississippi the lowest reading at 71.9 years. The Southern states don’t fare all that well. Georgia’s life expectancy at birth in 2020 is 74.10 years, below average.

There’s an old saw about the “three phases of retirement”...go-go, slow-go, and no-go. Have a plan to cover slow-go and nogo eventualities. Elder care is expensive!

“Stunned” is the only word I have, even though I have known for years it would probably happen. Gut-punched. If this is true, we all “Everyonelose.knows that the future of our business is digital,” AJC Editor Kevin Riley is quoted as saying, and he is also quoted as saying that the AJC will continue reporting “the news” seven days a week online. Really Kevin? To me, that is akin to saying that “someday cancer will be cured.” Yes, it is probably a given that the future of “news” will be digital. However, there may be a small fly in the ointment. That statement makes an as sumption that there is a future for “news,” that the business model of using news to make money will remain a viable business model at scale. Maybe it will. Or not.

Let’s see, a printed newspaper with a brand still trusted and respected by a large portion of the public, versus digi tal newsletters and a website. Not sure I would want to make that bet.

to consider that there could be room for a not-digital future. You know however, we now can make every form of music electronically on a keyboard, and yet, now after centuries we still have real violins, real pianos, real drums played by people performed in front of audiences of real people in person. The same is true with other forms of art. Books are still printed. People still write. People still actually read.

Yes, there is the New York Times with 9.17 million paid subscribers, of which only 761,000 are print subscriptions and the rest are digital. And they continue to grow. Their digital paid subscriptions increased 180,000 in the second quarter of 2022. On face, that would support Mr. Riley’s confidence in digital. But, again, we are talking about the New York Times, a brand that was already at scale nationally and which has consistently made the right decisions at the right time. I am not sure how duplicable their business model is.

According to reports from news website SaportaReport, the AJC plans to cease daily publication sometime in 2023. My bet is that will happen sometime in the first half of the year. According to the reports, there will still be a “weekend” editionpresumedly once a week. Of note, although numerous sources indicate there is a move to cease daily publication in the near future, there has been no official definitive confirmation as of today – Sept. 8, 2022.

People need interaction with other people, and digital so far has not proven to be an adequate substitute. In fact, it is often insanely toxic. “Meta” may be the biggest financial blunder in the history of the world. Or, it could rival Amazon as the best. What will sustain humanity I fear is not something digital; it is something moreButpersonal.digitalis a mighty strong current to swim against.

How do I describe two books that are well-written but, in some ways, unsatisfy ing? At least to me? Both expertly wove together red herrings and clues. Both had victims that were less than likable. For me, too many of the char acters in each were also unlikable. Some were downright despicable, and they weren’t even the victims or the killers. Still, there’s no denying that both books were well-plotted.

The book opens on the wedding night, and the first chapter is narrated in the third person. From there, chapters move back and forth between the day before and the wedding night and also switch between several characters who speak in
