Your pap smear is abnormal … now what? By Dr. Annie Kim, MD, FACOG Cervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent, with regular screening tests and followup. There are currently two screening tests that can DR. KIM help prevent cervical cancer or detect it early. The Pap smear looks for precancerous changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if not treated appropriately. The HPV test detects the human papillomavirus that can cause these cellular changes. The Pap smear is recommended for all women between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, and this test can be done in your doctor’s office. If your Pap smear is normal, then routine follow-up is recommended as recommended by your doctor. An abnormal Pap smear is one in which the laboratory interprets the cellular changes to be different from those normally seen on a healthy cervix. Although an abnormal test result can be worrisome, it does not necessarily mean you have cervical cancer. Of the 3 million women who receive an abnormal
result from a Pap smear each year, only about 10,000 are actually cases of cervical cancer. There are a few conditions that might cause an abnormal Pap smear result, including HPV, which is the most common cause. HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection, and most sexually active individuals have been exposed to at last one of the more than 100 known strains of HPV. Other sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea and chlamydia, as well as vaginal inflammation from bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection can also cause changes on your Pap smear. If you have an abnormal Pap smear, your doctor will probably ask you to come back for a follow-up appointment for a procedure called a colposcopy. Colposcopy is an outpatient procedure where your doctor takes a closer look at the cervix using a special instrument called a colposcope, which combines a bright light and magnifying lens. If abnormal cells are seen, then a biopsy is performed and sent to the lab to determine whether these cells are cancerous or precancerous. The type of cells that are found on biopsy will dictate the treatment. Moderate to severe precancerous cells need to be removed by procedures such as con-

ization or loop excision, but if the biopsy is completely normal, then more frequent Pap smears would be recommended. The most important thing to know about an abnormal Pap smear is that as long as you follow-up with all of the recommended testing, you are not likely to develop cervical cancer. The most magical time of the year is finally here, and Avalon in Alpharetta is once again North Fulton’s home for the holidays. From story time and photos with Santa to Avalon on Ice, the mixed-use destination invites the community to enjoy a merry and memorable holiday experience for guests of all ages. To kick off the season, Avalon will host its sixth annual Lighting of Avalon on Sunday, November 24 from 1 to 8 p.m. Presented by Northside Hospital, the festive celebration features activities for the whole family, including face painting, ice skating performances, live music and more. At 7 p.m., guests will experience the magical lighting of Avalon’s 40-foot Christmas tree, led by Santa himself. During the Lighting of Avalon, the destination’s Rockefeller-inspired ice skating rink will open to the public, welcoming skaters of all ages through January 26, 2020. General admission tickets are $18 per adult and $14 per child under nine, including skates. Group rates and season passes are available for $175 a person. From Nov. 25 through Christmas Eve, Saint Nick will set up shop in his North Poleinspired cottage in Palmer Plaza to spread holiday cheer and take photos with families. Parents are welcome to personalize each visit using Santa’s high-tech RFID tags, which can be activated at Santa’s house or Concierge. Reservation appointments are full, but walkups will be accepted. On Thanksgiving Day, families can create new memories along The Boulevard, such as an Avalon on Ice skating adventure or exclu-
sive holiday specials from Avalon’s retailers. On Black Friday, be sure to return to Avalon for great shopping deals, activations and more from retailers and restaurants. For those with a sweet tooth, Malvi Mallow will bring its famous “mallows” treats to Avalon every Wednesday through Sunday from Nov. 24 to Jan. 6, 2020. On Sunday, December 22 from 5 to 6 p.m., join Avalon and Chabad of North Fulton for the third annual Chanukah celebration, featuring a traditional Menorah lighting ceremony, refreshments, music and more. Other holiday happenings at Avalon include Story Time with Santa each Monday beginning November 25, Pet Nights with Santa each Tuesday starting November 26, Breakfast with Santa at Chick-fil-A Avalon on December 14, and Breakfast with Santa at Oak Steakhouse on Dec. 15. Finally, Avalon will host its second annual Noon Year’s Eve celebration at The Hotel at Avalon on Thursday, December 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Perfect for little ones with early bedtimes, guests can enjoy live music, face painting, crafts and a countdown to Noon with a giant balloon drop. Tickets are $15 for adults and children over two.
