Authorities arrest pair suspected of shoplifting ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man and a woman Oct. 15 after the man was seen shoplifting from the Macy’s at North Point Mall.

The store’s loss prevention officer said she saw the man conceal items in a shopping bag with the help of a woman after exiting the dressing room. Both then left the store without paying for any items.

The total value of the missing items was just under $500.

The man, a 20-year-old, and the woman, his aunt, were arrested for shoplifting. The woman was identified as 56-year-old Anastasia Doyle of Eastpoint.

Two juveniles suspected of theft at mall store ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating an Oct. 13 incident in which two juveniles are suspected of shoplifting from the Von Maur at North Point Mall.

The loss prevention officer said he saw one of the juveniles conceal a wallet.

The two then selected some clothing they put on, then left without paying for anything, the loss prevention officer said.

The total value of the missing items was close to $300.

The loss prevention officer stopped the juveniles after they left and released them to their parents.

Police arrest employee for felony shoplifting ROSWELL, Ga. — Police arrested a man Oct. 15 for allegedly stealing merchandise from the Big Lots on Holcomb Bridge Road.

The loss prevention officer said she had seen the man void purchases, ring items as refunds that were not refunds and fail to ring up several purchases since March. Multiple instances of this activity had been caught on security camera, store officials said.

The total value of the missing items is valued at just under $1,000.

Police said the employee, identified as 28-year-old Shawnton Johnson of Roswell, admitted to the theft. He was arrested without incident for felony shoplifting.

Man takes photograph of hit-and-run suspect ROSWELL, Ga. — Police are investigating an Oct. 16 incident in which a female driver allegedly fled the scene after striking a man’s car.

The man had parked his car at the Home Depot parking lot on Woodstock Road that afternoon. After spending about 30 minutes in the store, he returned to his car and saw another driver strike his vehicle.

While waiting for police to arrive, the man saw a woman drive by with damage to her car’s passenger side headlight and a missing rubber vent cover. The man took a photo of the driver.

Police found a broken headlight covering and rubber vent cover next to the man’s car.

Alpharetta gives Tech Village another shot at zoning change

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The developers behind Alpharetta’s Tech Village will get another shot to pitch a rezoning request before the City Council, possibly ending months of litigation over an earlier denial.

At its Oct. 21 meeting, the council voted 5-0 to grant TPA Group a hearing in December to apply for zoning changes on the same property within a year of an earlier application’s denial.

Normally, the city restricts new zoning requests on a piece of property to one in a 12-month period if a first request has been denied. TPA Group’s first rezoning request was denied in January of this year, so, under the policy, it would not be able to resubmit a new zoning proposal until late January of 2020. City code does allow for the council to shorten that frame to six months.

TPA’s new proposal will include a master plan amendment, rezoning and conditional use request for Tech Village, a $250 million mixed-use development on Lakeview Parkway near Haynes Bridge Road.

Crawford Arnold, TPA Group director, told the City Council Oct. 21 that his firm is in the final stages of negotiations with a large corporation seeking 120,000 square feet for its corporate campus. The corporation has requested to remain anonymous for now, he said, but it plans to provide 500 jobs with an annual average salary of $70,000.

“They have a very tight timeline, and in order for us to stay in contention with them, we would need our plan to be heard and considered by the

council in December,” Arnold said.

In addition, TPA Group is negotiating with two other firms interested in occupying a combined 200,000 square feet of office space, he said.

Back in January of this year, the City Council denied a request to extend the May 2019 deadline for TPA to seek building permits for some 276 apartments before the site reverted back to its previous zoning that allowed forsale residential.

The council showed little interest in accommodating Tech Village at the time. For one thing, city officials expressed concern that the city has no shared document with the developer that specifically detailed the site plans.

Another point, highlighted by Mayor Jim Gilvin, was the project’s affiliation with North American Properties, the developers for Avalon. Gilvin pointed out that North American had originally proposed no apartments in its second phase at Avalon when it came before the City Council for zoning approval in 2012.Ultimately, the second phase plan called for 275 apartments.

TPA Group filed suit against the city in February claiming the denial represented malfeasance and wrongful conduct by the city. The city responded by asking the court to dismiss the suit outright.

Gilvin was not present at the Oct. 21 meeting. Councilman Ben Burnett was also absent.

With the Oct. 21 vote, TPA will now be able to seek zoning changes on the property a little more than 10 months after the earlier denial.

A public hearing on the new proposal has been tentatively set for Dec. 17.

Roswell prohibits installation of neighborhood speed humps

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Speed humps are no longer an option in Roswell neighborhoods.

The Roswell City Council voted 3-2 in favor of the measure that eliminates vertical deflection devices, like speed humps, as approved traffic calming device in local neighborhoods.

The measure passed Oct. 15, with councilmembers Mike Palermo and Marcelo Zapata opposed.

The vote will affect one of the city’s two traffic-calming programs.

The Residential Traffic Control Enhancement Program covers more passive, standardized devices, like in-street speed signs and radar speed displays, to address speeding about 5-10 mph over the limit.

The Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program covers vehicles traveling 10 mph or more over the speed limit, and usually includes physical improvements to the roadway. Vertical deflection devices, such as speed humps and speed cushions, were once included as an option is this program but are now prohibited. Speed tables, raised intersections and raised crosswalks are also prohibited if used as a speed-hump type deflection.

Transportation Director Muhammad Rauf said vertical deflection may still be used in cases where it consists of a much longer ramp and is not as abrupt as a traditional speed hump.

“One of the reasons that we were getting rid of the vertical deflection devices was really for emergency response,” said City Traffic Engineer Scott Brunner.

“The traditional speed hump has some pretty serious issues.”

Speed humps, for example, can actually cause people to speed up more than if the road had no speed humps, he said.

But the biggest problem, Brunner said, is safety.

“They interfere with emergency response, not just response time,” Brunner said. “They affect the way we can safely treat patients and transport them.”

He estimated that a speed hump is about 20-30 percent more dangerous to a motorcyclist than to a car.

Speed humps also raise several other concerns, Brunner said.

“Most pertinent to this area is that their presence tends to reduce property values or create a perception of reduced property values,” Brunner said. “That is the reason most cited for petitions for speed humps to fail.”

Under the city’s new policy, existing

speed humps in neighborhoods will not be removed.

The speed hump issue has come up because the city has recently adopted the International Fire Code as part of its Code of Ordinances. As a part of that document, traffic calming devices must be approved by the city’s fire marshal.

Roswell Fire Marshal Charles Vacca said he does not want vertical deflection devices installed on public roadways, and Roswell DOT staff agrees, according to Brunner.

The updated policy provides several alternative traffic-calming devices, including horizontal deflections like chicanes or diverters, narrowing roadways, textured pavement, landscaping and on-street parking.

“I want to encourage residents and HOAs to take a look at the suggested methods of traffic control,” said Councilman Matthew Tyser. “There are some really creative methods in there.”

Not all of the councilmembers were happy with removing speed humps as an option, however.

Palermo said that neighborhood traffic and speeding is one of residents’ top concerns and that he was uncomfortable eliminating an option for controlling traffic.

He questioned whether it was possible to prioritize other traffic calming measures but still keep vertical deflection devices as an option in certain neighborhoods and situations.

Zapata agreed, saying he could not vote for a motion that would remove speed humps entirely.

With the new policy, if a neighborhood requests a new traffic calming device, the city will be responsible for half of its cost. The second half of the bill would be footed by a neighborhood group or association requesting the measure.

Fulton Science Academy honors key supporters in community ALPHARETTA, Ga. — More than 100 people turned out Oct. 25 for the inaugural STEAM Innovation and Awards Dinner to benefit the Fulton Science Academy.

The event, held at Alpharetta’s Metropolitan Club, was organized to recognize and honor those whose support has contributed to the school’s success.

Founded in 2012, Fulton Science Academy provides advanced instruction in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics to students in grades K-12. Last year, the private school represented Georgia in seven national and international competitions.

“As the school is growing so fast, we wanted a way to show recognition and also introduce ourselves to the community,” said Rookmin Maharaj, partnerships and events director for the school.

“This is not your ‘normal’ curriculum program at FSA. STEAM is embodied in all that is done.”

The project will provide 35 additional classrooms and includes construction of a two-story classroom addition, a single-story portion of a classroom addition and another single-story addition to the back of the existing cafeteria.

Fulton Science Academy Principal Kenan Senar said the additions will allow the school to increase capacity to 1,000 students.

Honorees at the awards dinner were selected based on their contributions or facilitation of a program at the school.

Maharaj said the school hopes to make the awards dinner an annual event.

When an employee verified that the bill was fake, the man fled. He took the food with him without paying.

Suspenseful ‘Night Must Fall’ provides GET’s Halloween treat

By HATCHER HURD For The Herald ROSWELL, Ga. — Georgia Ensemble Theatre has offered up a delicious concoction just in time for Halloween with the psychological thriller “Night Must Fall” by Emlyn Williams.

Set in a suitably remote cottage in 1935 New England, Williams’ play was first performed on the London stage in 1935. It echoes Agatha Christie and Stephen King but pays no allegiance to either.

In it, we meet Mrs. Branson (Susan Shaloub Larkin), a cantankerous old hypochondriac who rules her little domain, a cottage ensconced in the New England countryside, with an iron hand and acidic tongue.

First among her subjects is her young niece Olivia (Christina Leidel) who lives on an allowance from her aunt but is merely one more foil for the dowager aunt’s household. Olivia has a feckless suitor (Doyle Reynolds), but she knows she doesn’t love him, yet she is too afraid of the world to leave her aunt’s employ to find if not true happiness, at least a life of her own.

Soon after the curtain rises, a stranger named Dan (Jonathan Horne} appears and inserts himself into the household,

first as the handyman. But he quickly ingratiates himself to Mrs. Branson, and she is smitten by the attentions of this darkly handsome young man who quickly inserts himself in the household and

takes to calling Mrs. Branson “Mother.”

His arrival into the household coincides with the disappearance of a young woman at a nearby hotel, leading Olivia and the servants to let their imagina-

tions and their suspicions to play out.

Is handsome Dan really the poor young ne’er-do-well who only needs the stability he never had as a child? Or has he gone over to the dark side? And if not Dan, who is responsible for the missing woman?

Who indeed? The play is a mark of GET’s maturity. It is a fine cast with outstanding performances by Larkin as Mrs. Branson and Horne as mysterious Dan. Stirring the pot is director Shannon Eubanks. She exhibits a deft hand in transitioning from comedy to drama to suspense in alternate scenes. There is laughter and there is menace which must come to a climax. And? Well, that is this Halloween confection, served up with aplomb by GET. Kudos also goes to the lighting, sound and production pros who create the ambiance in which this tale is told. Again, this is mature theater for discerning audiences. Why settle for reruns of “Psycho” or “House of Blood” this Halloween season when you can see it up close, personal and in (living?) color.

Wine Festival grants $10,000 to local school foundation

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell North Elementary Foundation was recently granted $10,000 to help fund a new outdoor classroom.

The Roswell Wine Festival, held Oct. 6, chooses to send a portion of its proceeds to local nonprofits each year.

“We decided very early on that we wanted to build an event that helped the community and benefit local nonprofits,” said Roswell Wine Festival Co-Founder Dwight Cunningham.

This year, Wine Festival organizers chose the Roswell North Elementary Foundation as well as Star House and North Fulton Community Charities.

“We love to fund projects that have a lasting impact in Roswell,” said Roswell Wine Festival Co-Founder Peggy Robinson. “Early education is so important.

[Dwight and I] actually met in college and now each have our own young families. We are passionate about early education, because it lasts a lifetime.”

Cunningham and Robinson chose the Foundation, in part, because of the work one teacher, Elizabeth Rains, has been doing with the students in the school’s garden. Students at every level work with Rains to plant, grow, harvest

A portion of the money raised by this year’s Roswell Wine Festival has been sent to the Roswell North Elementary Foundation to fund a new outdoor classroom. and later cook vegetables. Such programs are an extension of the school’s Licata Science Lab. The Roswell North Elementary Foundation is the sole source of funding for the Licata Science Lab and its extension programs for cooking and gardening as well as the salary of full-time teacher Rains.

“This permanent outdoor classroom will be enjoyed by students and community members for years to come,” Robinson said. “We also love what Elizabeth Rains is doing with the students at Roswell North to offer them hands-on experiences. Perhaps one year they will even grow grapes in the gardens adjacent to the outdoor classroom.”

Roswell North Elementary Foundation President Lyndsay Slocum said she was excited about such a large step toward the $40,000 goal needed to create the outdoor classroom.

“The outdoor classroom has long been a dream of students and teachers alike, and without this substantial donation, it would still be a distant vision,” she said.

During the Roswell Wine Festival, Roswell North Elementary School parents and business partners donated more than 200 wine bottles for a Wine Pull that raised close to an additional $4,000 for the outdoor classroom.

Previous beneficiaries of grant awards include Bert›s Big Adventure, Roswell Fine Arts Alliance, Friends of Roswell Parks, ArtAround Roswell, Keep Roswell Beautiful and the Children›s Development Academy.

The annual Roswell Wine Festival is one of Atlanta’s fastest-selling events. This year, 2,500 people attended and tickets sold out within an hour.

Two local military veterans inducted into Georgia Hall of Fame

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Two local military veterans have been selected to join a handful of veterans statewide who have been inducted this year into the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame.

This is the seventh year that the nonprofit has honored Georgia veterans after it was established in 2013 by the Georgia State Senate. Fifteen veterans, chosen by an independent selection committee, are inducted each November.

This year’s inductees include former Staff Sgt. Richard F. Dundon, a Vietnam veteran living in Johns Creek, and former U.S. Army medical specialist and Roswell resident Roger W. Wise, Jr. Hall of Fame Co-Director and Chairman of the Board Col. Rick White said this year’s inductees were chosen for demonstrating one of three categories: valor for heroic action in combat; outstanding achievement while in service; or significant local, state or national contributions after leaving active duty.

Wise said the nomination came as a shock.

“When I received the call from Col. White, at first, I thought he was playing a joke on me,” Wise said. “But when I found out he was serious and advised me that I would be inducted in the class of 2019, I started crying… I felt humbled reading the resumes of the membership of the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame. You see great patriots, those that have given much for their country. I feel honored to be part of their team.”

Wise has kept busy after he was honorably discharged in January 1967.

Community Summit to address financial vulnerability in North Fulton ROSWELL, Ga. — The North Fulton Poverty Task Force will host its first Community Summit on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Over 200 business, faith and civic leaders will gather to learn more about financial vulnerability in North Fulton. Roger W. Wise, Jr., a former U.S. Army medical specialist and a Roswell resident, has been inducted into the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame. right out of college, served in the lst Cavalry Division when it was ambushed in 1969 in the Song Be Province.

“Disregarding his own safety, he crawled through enemy lines to direct accurate fire support, resulting in the retreat of hostile forces and the capture of a wounded enemy soldier who would later

provide vital intelligence of enemy positions and munitions caches,” said Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame spokesperson Marilyn Weitzel. “For this feat of heroism, he was awarded the Silver Star.”

Dundon again came under intense hostile fire the next year to ensure the successful completion of his mission, Weitzel added. His actions earned him the Bronze Star Medal with “V” device, the fourth highest military decoration for valor.

“All I can recall is fear and trepidation — in Vietnam it was more of the same,” Dundon said. “I remember coming home and getting off the plane and kissing the ground. I do not consider myself a heroic military veteran… I am a survivor who carries the scars and memories of those we lost and what I went through. It never goes away.”

Photos of the two new inductees will hang on the Heroes Wall of the Floyd Building in the State Capitol Complex in Atlanta along with the previous 100 inductees.

The ceremony and banquet honoring this year’s inductees will be held Saturday, Nov. 2 starting at 6 p.m. at the St. Luke Ministry Center, 301 11th St., Columbus. It is open to the public.

Award-winning author to visit Barrington Hall

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The South is steeped in Civil War history, and one visiting author is providing a new angle for studying the subject.

Scott Mingus, co-author of “Targeted Tracks: The Cumberland Valley Railroad in the Civil War, 1861–1865,” will visit Barrington Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. to talk about his book and sign copies. The book, co-written with history author Cooper Wingert, focuses on the Cumberland Valley Railroad, which connected Hagerstown, Md. to Harrisburg, Pa. “The Civil War was the first conflict in which railroads played a major role.

Although much has been written about the role of railroads in general, little has been written about specific lines,” Mingus said. “Its location enhanced its importance during some of the Civil War’s most critical campaigns. Despite the line’s significance to the Union war effort, its remarkable story remains little known.”

Mingus, a scientist and consultant in the global pulp and paper industry, has written 22 books about the Civil war and Underground Railroad. His biography

on Confederate General William “Extra Billy” Smith has won multiple awards.

Mingus has written books on all three railroads that ran between Pennsylvania, a free state, and Maryland, a slave state, during the Civil War. “Targeted Tracks” is the last of this series.

The name of the book comes from the railroad’s unique position during the war.

“The Confederates attacked the CVRR three consecutive years — Jeb Stuart in 1862; Albert Jenkins, Robert Rodes, and George Pickett in 1863; and John McCausland in 1864 — making it one of the chief targets of the Confederates,” Mingus said.

Mingus’s interest in history came from his parents, including his father, who was a World War II veteran.

“From my earliest childhood, I shared their love, as have my two sons who are both college history professors,” he said.

“As a research scientist by profession, I really get into the research aspect of writing books and it was a natural extension of my interests and skills set.”

“Targeted Tracks” was written using the railway’s reports, letters and diaries from local residents, and newspaper accounts.

Appen celebrates best in business Annual gala honors readers’ favorites

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — There was dancing, dinner and air of celebration Oct. 24 as some 450 members of the business community gathered at Alpharetta’s Metropolitan Club for the seventh annual Best of North Atlanta Gala awards ceremony.

The event, hosted each year by Appen Media Group, recognizes the best businesses in North Atlanta as determined by readers. This year, more than 30,000 people cast ballots for their favorite business in any of 114 categories, from cosmetic surgery to auto service repair.

“We hold this gala every year in an effort to recognize the best businesses our communities have to offer as decided by our readers,” said Appen Media Publisher Hans Appen. “And wow, our readers had a lot to say this year. We shattered the record for total number of voters with just over 30,000 people voting.”

The reader engagement in the survey says a lot about the appreciation residents have for the high quality businesses they patronize, Appen said.

“It also says a lot about the enormous honor it is to receive one of these awards,” he said. “It’s a competitive contest, and winners should be proud of the recognition.”

In addition to the businesses recognized as best and runner-up in each category, the gala honors two businesses in premier categories.

The Pillar Award is presented to the business voted as making the most positive impact on the community.

and Terrie Altman of Alpharetta BurgerFi. The local franchise was honored for its popular family dining experience and its array of philanthropic efforts in the community. Those efforts include promoting local charities on its social media and championing fundraising efforts on their behalf.

“I’m humbled by this,” Ron Altman said. “For us, the privilege of being in Alpharetta and serving this wonderful community of people who like our food is just a great blessing.”

He said the most gratifying aspect is the ability to incorporate charitable campaigns as part of the business.

Terrie agreed.

“We do what we love,” she said. “We love serving the community, and I’m blown away to be recognized for that.”

The other premier award, the One to Watch Award, honored Sherri Selman and Lisa Wilson, co-founders of NexSeason Transitions, a firm specializing

“To be recognized in our second year of business is astounding,” Selman said.

The night’s ceremony announced individual winners in each of the categories, with certificates presented for “best” and “runner-up.”

One recipient, Edna Blackman, 85, received the certificate for Best Senior Activity Center for Roswell Senior Center.

“It means a lot,” Blackman said. “The award also means we appreciate the help we receive. For many seniors, this is their second home.”

Kristen Lewkowitz received the award for Best Art Gallery/Retailer on behalf of the Johns Creek Arts Center. The nonprofit also received awards for children’s

lessons and children’s parties.

“That’s fantastic for us,” she said.

“We’re a nonprofit, and the more people who can come to our facilities, the more people we can bring art to.”

Name recognition was also important to Danielle Boglione, co-founder of The Maids cleaning service in Roswell, which was honored as runner-up in maid services.

“It helps to give peace of mind to people when we go inside their homes,” she said. “There are single moms, working moms with a lot going on.”

Following the awards ceremony, the gala concluded with a dance and social.

Appen said the entire staff pitched in to make the event a success.

“It took months to prepare, and everyone pitched in,” he said. “We had some hiccups along the way, but I’m blessed to work with an amazing team, and I am proud of the end result.”

Developer plans 900-home subdivision in Peachtree Corners One of the largest residential projects in the metro area is being proposed in Peachtree Corners on 115 acres that sprawl along the Chattahoochee River. Peachtree Corners has come a long way over the last several years since it incorporated. For years it had been known as a strip of aging retail centers you had to travel through in getting from Roswell to I-85 along Holcomb Bridge Road and Jimmy Carter. But since incorporating, city officials launched a rebuild of the city that included a new town center that opened earlier this April.

The town center sits on 21 acres across from the Forum that was purchased in 2013. Following a Livable Center Initiative study, the city rezoned the property to mixed-use and approved a town center design concept in 2014.

In 2015 it signed a contract with Fuqua Development and sold the property to them in 2017, the same year of the project’s groundbreaking.

The town center included a large town green, a veterans monument, a significant amount of retail and some residential townhomes. Their plan is to also include a botanical garden in the

Since construction of the town center, the area has seen more interest from investors who want to build in Peachtree Corners. The latest is one of the largest residential plans. According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the 115-acre site is actually the old campus of the headquarters of Fiserv. The existing buildings will be torn down to make way for the residential development.

The plat has 4,000 linear feet of frontage along the river and the homebuilder said there will be sweeping views of the river.

Final plans have not been submitted, but the project is slated to include condominiums, townhomes and singlefamily homes, as well as age-restricted independent and assisted living facility.

It will be gated.

In the ABC article, Peachtree Corners mayor spoke in favor of the project.

“We want to make sure that housing for these citizens is available,” he said.

“This project will provide that housing while respecting the sensitive river corridor and tree canopy that we all love and enjoy.”

The builder expects to break ground in January with the first homes being up for sale by the end of 2020.

Ashton Woods Homes also proposed a 971-unit residential project along the Chattahoochee River just up the road in Duluth. It would sit on 145 acres off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth on property that was formerly a golf course.

According to the Chronicle, a recent proposal was to include 161 townhomes with the rest being single-family homes.

Of the 145 acres, 65 acres will be preserved as open space.

In Lawrenceville, another developer is proposing 171 homes on 32 acres on Cedars Road near Winder Highway that will include townhomes and single-family homes. And near the Mall of Georgia, another is proposing 245 homes on 58 acres off Bart Johnson Road.

While much smaller, but still large in measure of recent residential developments, another project has been proposed just up the road in Tucker. Plans have been filed for a 22.5-acre property at the LaVista Road-Midvale Road intersection, about a mile outside of I-285 near Northlake Mall. The project would include 63 single-family homes with 5.6 acres of open space.

With inventory still low, especially for houses under $400,000, there seems to be a strong market for residential construction.

The art of being a good listener isn’t about listening, it’s about asking good questions. The key to doing this is being well prepared before you meet with customers.

For every meeting you have, you should have specific goals and objectives that will help you develop an overall agenda for the meeting.

Developing a meeting guide with an outline of the topics and questions you want to ask is a great way to prepare for a meeting.

When asking questions, it’s best to start at a high level. Your questions should be open-ended and require your customer to respond with more than a “yes” or “no” answer. As you begin to understand more about your customer’s business, you can start asking probing questions about their specific wants and needs. Asking questions about some of the issues or challenges they are facing are great ways to identify potential opportunities to help them.

Having a meeting guide with good questions will help ensure you are a good listener. By being a good listener, you are much more likely to establish trust and credibility with your customers, a requirement for doing business with them.

Alpharetta, Johns Creek post wins on way to monster matchup

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com Class 7A Milton 37, Forsyth Central 7 Forsyth Central scored more points Friday night than their combined point total from the previous three games against Milton, but it was not near enough. The Eagles captured their 11th straight 5-AAAAAAA win on the road in Cumming, downing the Bulldogs 37-7.

Milton is tied atop the 5-AAAAAAA leaderboard with North Forsyth at 3-0 in region play.

Eagles’ quarterback Devin Farrell and running back Ahmad Junearick combined for four touchdowns to lead Milton.

Farrell scored on a 17-yard rush to give the Eagles an early lead, and Junearick ran to the end zone early in the second to extend the margin. Farrell’s second touchdown came four minutes later with a throwing strike to Jake Walter.

Central cut the deficit to 21-7 with a touchdown pass from Bronson Landreth, but Jordan McDonald and Junearick added rushing scores in the fourth to secure the win.

The Eagles (5-3, 3-0) will bring their unblemished region record on the road again Friday to take on Lambert. After

dropping to 0-3 in region play, Forsyth Central will go on the road to face South Forsyth in a crucial game for the Bulldogs’ playoff hopes.

Alpharetta 28, Northview 12 Alpharetta put its undefeated Region 7-AAAAAA record on the line Friday and came away with a 28-12 win over Northview at home.

Northview led 6-0 after a low-scoring first half, but Alpharetta took the lead early in the third with Kristofer Thomas returning the kickoff for a touchdown. Quarterback Will Gerdes extended the gap to 14-6 a few minutes later with a passing score.

Gerdes added his second touchdown in the fourth to put the margin at 20-6.

Alpharetta’s defense extended the score soon after with a pick-six.

Northview found the end zone with a rushing score from quarterback Beau Lark in the final minutes of the fourth, but there was too little time to complete a comeback.

The Raiders (7-1, 6-0) have a huge region matchup Friday on the road against Johns Creek with the winner taking the outright lead of the 7-AAAAAA standings. Northview (4-4, 3-3) will look to improve on their playoff hopes at home against Pope.

Cambridge 59, Pope 21 Cambridge earned a crucial win over Pope Friday night to improve their playoff hopes with just one game remaining in their regular season schedule.

The Bears improved to 3-4 in Region 7-AAAAAA play with their lopsided win, putting them at sixth in the standings.

The Bears’ 59 points was the second most in a game in program history.

Cambridge was led offensively by five touchdowns from quarterback Zach Harris.

The sophomore connected with Hayden Gardella for two scores and with TJ Mowery and Evan Kurtz for one grab each. Harris also added a 3-yard touchdown run.

Running back Philip Michael Collins compiled two rushing scores.

Cambridge scored early and often and led 38-7 at halftime before cruising to the dominant win, their first over the Greyhounds since 2016.

The Bears (5-4, 4-3) have a bye before closing out their regular season Nov. 8 against Alpharetta. Cambridge is seeking its first playoff berth since 2016 and just their second all-time.

Johns Creek 37, Centennial 17 In a matchup of the top and bottom Region 7-AAAAAA teams, region leaders Johns Creek remained unbeaten in region play with a 30-point victory over winless Centennial.

Following a heartbreaking loss to Dunwoody Oct. 18, Centennial stuck with the Gladiators in the first half with Johns Creek holding a 10-3 lead.

However, the game opened up in the Gladiators’ favor in the final 24 minutes of play.

Ben Whitlock threw his second touchdown of the night to extend the lead early in the third, and Will Watson added a rushing score seven minutes later to give Johns Creek a 23-3 edge.

Whitlock threw touchdown number three early in the fourth. Centennial responded with a 75-yard touchdown pass, but the Gladiators racked up two more scores to remain undefeated in region play.

Johns Creek (7-1, 6-0) will put their unblemished region record on the line Friday at home against Alpharetta (6-2, 6-0) in a battle for the outright lead in the 7-AAAAAA standings. Centennial (0-8, 0-6) will seek their first win of the year against North Atlanta on the road.

Class 4A Denmark 28, White County 21 After taking two losses to top-five ranked teams, Denmark got back on track Friday night by downing White County on the road to improve to 3-2 in Region 7-AAAA play. The win gives Denmark its first postseason berth.

The Danes led 14-0 at the half and extended the margin with a Zach Ogbogu rushing score early in the third.

White County responded with a touchdown to put the margin at 21-14 entering the final period of play.

Denmark’s Jordan Brunson scored early in the fourth, but White County added a score to keep it a one-score contest.

White County looked to tie the game late, but the Danes’ defense held on an attempted fourth down conversion with two minutes, allowing Denmark to run out the clock and punch its ticket to the playoffs.

The Danes (6-2, 3-2) have a bye before closing out their regular season against Flowery Branch.

Blessed Trinity 59, Chestatee 15 After winning two nail-biters decided by a total of three points, Blessed Trinity earned a lopsided win over Chestatee Friday night to remain undefeated in Region 7-AAAA play.

Running back Elijah Green scored three touchdowns in the first half, and the Titans cruised to the win, their 11th straight in Region 7-AAAA play. The victory also extends BT’s win streak over teams outside of the top-10 in the state rankings.

The Titans have not lost to an unranked opponent in the regular season since 2013.

The Titans (7-1, 4-0) will continue their budding rivalry with Marist (9-0, 5-0) Friday night in a battle of top-5 ranked teams. The programs have met four times with the winner of the contest either securing the 7-AAAA title or the Class 4A state championship. BT is 3-1 in the series, and three games have been decided by a total of six points.

BT downed the War Eagles, 16-7, to take the 2017 Class 4A state title.

Class-A Private Fellowship Christian 55, Mount Pisgah 14 Fellowship Christian has made a habit of winning big this season, and that continued Friday with the Paladins downing Mount Pisgah, 55-14, in Johns Creek.

Fellowship has scored 42 or more points and has held opponents to 21 points or less in all eight of its games this season.

Fellowship’s win put the all-time series between the teams at 8-8 dating back to 2004.

Five Paladins found the end zone Friday. Josh Cole and Bryce Paul had two touchdown runs each. Murphy Reeves and Trexton Lewis ran for scores, and quarterback Eli Hildebrandt threw a touchdown pass to Jordan Brewer.

The Paladins (8-0, 6-0) will be home Friday to take on Whitefield Academy (71, 6-0) in a winner-take-all matchup for the Region 6-A subregion B title. Fellowship enters the matchup as the defending subregion B champs.

Mount Pisgah (2-6, 2-4) will close out its subregion B schedule on the road against Walker Friday.

Hornets outlast Walton in overtime for vital region win

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — With the forecast calling for soggy conditions, Ray Manus Stadium was far from full Friday night, and Roswell’s marching band was given the night off. But the atmosphere was anything but dull with the Hornets and Walton, the two defending Region 4-AAAAAAA champions, duking it out in a defensive battle that needed overtime to be settled.

With the game deadlocked at 7-7 after four quarters, Roswell (5-2, 2-1) went on offense first and needed just three plays to find the end zone. The Hornets’ defense then stood tall, forcing a turnover on downs to seal the victory.

Hornets head coach Matt Kemper made no bones about the importance of the win. Roswell entered the game 1-1 in a region in which teams are only given five games to earn playoff spots and region titles.

“It’s huge,” Kemper said. “Now we’re going to take care of our business, [Walton] can hopefully take care of business, beat Cherokee, and we’ll both be hosting in the first round.”

In a contest where points were at a premium, the Hornets scored on their opening possession with a 13-play, 77-yard drive capped off by a 9-yard touchdown rush from John Copenhaver. Roswell started two more drives in Walton territory in the first half but was forced to punt on both possessions.

Walton (4-4, 2-1) tied the contest early in the second with a long drive of their own. The Raiders went 90 yards on 16 plays, led by the rushing of Kenny Djaha with quarterback Zak Rozsman calling his own number for a 4-yard touchdown run.

“We got a little stagnant there in the middle but moved the ball still with some consistency,” Kemper said. “I’d like to have seen us punch it in after some of those drives, though.”

Walton took over on their own 20yard line with under two minutes to go and drove inside Roswell territory, but the Hornets forced the Raiders to punt with 18 seconds remaining, pushing the game into overtime.

Roswell had focused on the run throughout the game and spread its rushes among the backfield. That plan was no different in overtime.

Walton won the toss and elected to go on defense. After a short rush from Ryan Hill, John Copenhaver ran to the goal line on the ensuing play to set up a 1-yard score from Hill.

Needing a stop to secure the win, Roswell’s defense heeded the call.

“Plunkett did a great job,” Kemper said.

Roswell brought pressure on the ensuing third-and-long play and forced Rozsman to scramble to set up fourthand-9. The Hornets’ secondary gave Rozsman few options down the field, and with the pocket collapsing, the quarterback threw the ball to a receiver in the flat. Though his target had space, the pass skipped off the ground, sending Roswell’s bench onto the field in celebration.

“I’m proud of the ways the guys played hard and physical,” Kemper said.

Roswell compiled 201 yards rushing with Willis leading the charge with 56 yards ahead of Hill’s 51 and Copenhaver’s 46. Savion Mccrary added 32 yards on nine carries.

Walton compiled 245 yards of total offense, led by 154 yards rushing from Djaha.

Roswell is now tied with Walton, Cherokee and Etowah atop the 4-AAAAAAA leaderboard, but the Hornets will certainly be the favorites Nov. 1 when they go on the road to face Woodstock (2-6, 1-2).

Local basketball teams contend with use of two different balls Players faced with use of varying equipment when season kicks off

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The basketball is the central focus throughout each local high school game, but it is easy to overlook its importance to the feel and flow of the game. That might not be the case this year.

The GHSA has permitted teams to either use the Wilson Wave ball, which has been the organization’s official ball for several years, or the new Wilson Evo NXT. The shift in equipment goes far beyond a name change. The two balls carry a price difference and have a significantly different feel. The Wave includes 24 grooves around the ball while the Evo is a more traditional, spherical ball.

The Evo will be mandatory for girls and boys basketball in the 2020-21 season, but this year, schools will have the option to use either ball, with the home team determining which Wilson model will be used as the game ball. That means players could have to contend with playing one ball during a Tuesday

night game and the other on Friday.

Drew Catlett, head boys coach of the defending Class-A Private state champs St. Francis, said he is not concerned with his players using different balls throughout the season.

“I think the guys, when they play AAU or over the summer, they might play with a Wilson, play with a Spalding, they play with different balls all summer,” Catlett said. “I think as a coach you sometimes over worry, but my own opinion is, if you can shoot, you can shoot with anything.”

However, the Knights’ coach said the cost difference did raise his eyebrows.

The Wave is $60 per ball while the Evo rings in at $80, a significant difference for a sports program that is backed almost solely through fundraising.

“That’s my only gripe with it,” Catlett said. “I bought 12 new Waves last year and 12 the year before that. I can’t just discard them. That’s a lot of money.”

Catlett said with budget restraints, he will likely have to phase in the Evo’s, and it could be 2 to 3 years before he has a full rack.

Another issue is getting a hold of the new balls. Due to a backup with St. Francis’ vendor, Catlett had to purchase the team’s two Evo’s at a retail store.

While other coaches in the state

have taken to Twitter to complain about vendor backups, that was not an issue for Chris Short, head coach of the Chattahoochee boys team.

Short has a stock of Evo’s, but he will also use Wave balls throughout the season in practice.

“We have both balls, and my plan is to infuse and work in the new ball to any situation in practice that I can,” Short said. “We are going to split time with each ball so we are acclimated so they’re not surprised in the moment.”

The Cougars’ coach said his players are split on the new ball.

“Some like it, some don’t,” he said.

“Some like the feel of it, some hate the color, we’re kind of all over the place.

The guys are not reluctant, they are more than willing to use both balls, and it’s up to me as a coach to make sure they get both in their hands.”

Short said Chattahoochee’s region, 7-AAAAAA, could vote on using one model throughout regular season region games or in the region tournament.

Catlett said Region 6-A could make a similar move.

Teams coming out of their region tournament looking to make a deep run in the playoffs will need to be familiar with the Evo. The GHSA has mandated that either ball can be used in the open-

ing rounds of the state tournament, but only the Evo will be used in the semifinals and state championships.

For that reason, the Roswell boys will use the Evo throughout the season.

“If it’s the state tournament ball, that’s what you’ll play at Roswell,” head coach Ty Phillips said.

Phillips said the verdict is still out on the Evo. He, along with Catlett and Short, said there were rashes of complaints from players, and even officials, on the Evo during GHSA-sanctioned camps in July, but Phillips said the balls appear to be more playable once they are worn in.

“The verdict is still out,” Phillips said.

“It was not their favorite ball at first, but then they adjust. In the end, it’s just playing basketball.”

All three coaches said that they will be downplaying the issue of using two balls throughout the season to their players.

“I’m not going to make a big issue of it with the players, because once you get it in their head that it’s the ball, that can affect them,” Catlett said.

Phillips said he will not bring up the topic with his players.

“It would be a mistake to make it an issue because then you get kids thinking about something they can’t control anyway,” he said.

Knights record ‘signature win’ over Mount Paran

By ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — For the first time in school history, St. Francis has bragging rights over Mount Paran Christian.

The Knights (5-3, 4-2) won 42-25 over the Eagles in the late-season Region 6-A matchup, their first win in four attempts against the school.

Senior quarterback Josh Gil rushed for one touchdown and nearly 150 yards and passed for three touchdowns and nearly 200 yards. Senior wide receiver Isaiah “Zay” Wadsworth finished with over 150 receiving yards and one touchdown.

“We’re trying to build a program,” said head coach Frank Barden. “We had really good kids and a good foundation laid last year, and this year we were just looking for a signature win. To get that win and get a signature win for our program, that’s big. I’m so proud for St. Francis.”

Mount Paran scored its first points of the night on a 3-yard touchdown run by Alex Lee to put the score at 14-7.

The seven-point margin didn’t last long, however. On the second play of the Knights’ next drive, Jai Smith took a handoff 80 yards for a touchdown, putting the Knights back out in front by two scores. St. Francis carried its 21-7 lead into the half.

The third quarter was a period full of scoring. Mount Paran started out with the ball and added a field goal to make it a 21-10 game.

The Knights responded with a 5-minute, 71 yard drive capped off with a 1-yard touchdown run by Gil. The Eagles responded on their ensuing drive with a 1-yard touchdown run

Early in the final period, the Eagles’ defense gave up one of many big plays to the Gil-Wadsworth attack. This time, Gil evaded the pass rush and was hit as he threw, but not before he found Wadsworth down the sideline for a 57-yard touchdown.

Needing a stop on defense to save any chance at a comeback, the Eagles were unable to contain the Knights’ offense.

On third-and-20 with just over six minutes remaining, Gil pulled off one more trick in the form of a 60-yard touchdown run. Junior kicker Jake Heintzleman hit his sixth extra point of the night, and the Knights went up 42-17.

St. Francis dominated in all phases of the game, and Barden didn’t downplay the significance of the win for the Knights.

“To win against a program like that, it’s big for us,” he said.
