5 arrested after Ga. 400 chase, manhunt ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested five people Aug. 9 after they allegedly led officers on a multi-county chase. The pursuit of the suspects’ two vehicles started near the Forsyth County/ Cherokee County line after midnight and ended in Alpharetta that morning when the vehicles crashed on Ga. 400.

Group leaves nail salon without paying charge ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating an Aug. 1 incident in which a man and two women left a nail salon without paying their $450 bill.

At 2 p.m. that day, the three suspects came into the shop at Old Milton Parkway and ordered several hours of services.

The man tried to pay with two debit cards, which were both declined. He then left the debit cards at the checkout counter and said he had another payment method in his car.

Instead of returning, all three suspects left in a red sedan.

Police said one of the names on the debit cards is for a man wanted out of Cobb County on two counts of financial transaction fraud.

Employees said the suspects were all unfamiliar. There is surveillance footage of the incident.

Copper wire taken from construction site ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A construction company working on a site at Wills Road called police Aug. 2 after an employee noticed that $35,000 worth of copper wire was missing.

The wire was last seen the previous night. When workers arrived at 8:30 a.m., it was gone.

The copper wire had been threaded through four floors and stored in packaging.

There were no cameras or signs of forced entry.

Anniversary ring missing from locked hotel room ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating an incident at The Hilton Garden Inn in which a woman’s $5,000 anniversary ring went missing when she left it in her locked room.

The chase began that morning when Forsyth County deputies alerted the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office about several car burglaries in the area. Soon after, Cherokee County deputies spotted the suspects’ two vehicles and started the pursuit.

Traffic on Ga. 400 southbound was backed up for morning traffic because of the chase and resulting crash.

The woman took the ring off at 8:30 a.m. on July 31 to put some lotion on and forgot to put it back on when she left. She returned to the room that night and couldn’t find the ring.

The woman’s insurance company advised her to file a police report.

Computer drives stolen from local guitar shop ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An employee from Guitar Center on North Point Drive called police July 31 to report that two computer hard drives had been stolen from the store.

Two days earlier, an employee was assisting a customer with a product in a locked display case. When he unlocked it, he saw that two hard drives, worth $2,000 total, were missing.

The two hard drives had been registered online, but the manufacturers were unable to provide any information associated with the person who registered them.

The employee said the company has had theft issues in the past.

Employee phone stolen while locking up ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a July 30 incident where camera footage showed a woman taking an employee’s phone from the Victoria’s Secret on North Point Circle.

The employee had laid his $500 phone on a table the previous night while he closed the gates to the store.

When he returned to the table, it was gone.

Surveillance footage showed a woman take the phone and leave.

The last known tracking location of the phone was in Stockbridge.

Cards, tools stolen from unlocked car ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A man called police July 31 to report that someone had stolen his credit card and three tools from his unlocked car.

The man had parked his car the previous evening at Carriage Trace. The next morning, the man noticed his glove

compartment was open, but he said he didn’t think anything of it.

A few hours later, at work, the man received an alert from his bank about suspicious activity on his account.

At that point, the man realized his car had been burglarized.

The missing tools are worth $400 total.

Family alerted to fraud on their credit report ROSWELL, Ga. — A family called police July 30 after receiving several credit cards they had not signed up for in the mail.

The family checked their credit scores and found several unfamiliar inquiries from Floor and Decor, Justice, Northern Tool & Equipment and Firestone Complete Auto.

None of the credit card accounts open under the family’s names had charges on them.

Police advised the family to close the accounts and contact Social Security Services.

Wanted man recognized walking on sidewalk ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a wanted man July 30 after officers recognized him while he was walking in downtown Alpharetta.

An officer said he knew the man had previously been arrested for possession of meth and for shoplifting. He checked the man’s information and found he had an active warrant from Atlanta for shoplifting.

Police stopped the man, identified as 35-year-old Scott Dobbs from Alpharetta, and arrested him without incident.

Scammer steals identity to open phone lines JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A man contacted police Aug. 1 after he received a bill from Verizon Wireless despite having never done business with the company.

The man discovered someone had opened four cell phone accounts under his name and had purchased four iPhone XS for each line through the Verizon website.

State of the City: Roswell sets bar high

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Mayor Lori Henry says she wants Roswell to set the standard for cities in North Fulton, and she wants to set that standard high.

And 2019 might have just been the year for that vision, she added.

Henry spoke at the Aug. 8 Roswell Rotary Club meeting at Roswell Area Park about the state of the city and its future. She chiefly spoke about Together Roswell, the city’s first citywide strategic comprehensive plan initiative launched this summer.

“2019 is the year the community came together to forge a vision for our common future,” Henry said.

“You have made your vision for Roswell very clear. Roswell residents and business owners want a prosperous, innovative, green and welcoming city that thrives with diversity and distinctiveness. Roswell is a city that cherishes its rich city and serves as an example of what it means to hold true to its own history while moving forward into today’s world.”

The strategic plan will help create a clear direction for the city’s future and will see policy based on it, Henry said.

Together Roswell is still in Phase I, the engagement phase, and residents can still provide input online at togetherroswell.org.

Henry also said she is excited about the ongoing preservation project inspired by Pastor Sabin Strickland for Doc’s Cafe on 20 Oxbo Road. The cafe,

a historical landmark, was the only gathering space in the 1950s where African Americans could eat out, Henry said.

“Roswell is special because of its diverse and remarkable story,” Henry said. “However, the story of the Groveway Community really has not been told or preserved. Groveway is a vibrant historical community in Roswell, and we must work with the Groveway Community to save this history and expand the story that is being taught to generations to come.”

The cafe was in danger of demolition because of the Oxbo Road Realignment project and has since been moved. A permanent home for the cafe has not yet been chosen, Henry said.

The mayor spoke about Roswell’s new Police Chief James Conroy. She also gave updates about major transportation projects across the city, including the Historic Gateway Project with GDOT and the newly completed Hardscrabble Green Loop.

But the largest transportation project Roswell has ever undertaken, Henry said, is the Big Creek Parkway project, to redesign and replace the Holcomb Bridge Road and Ga. 400 interchange. The city held an open house to show project plans Aug. 8.

“The people of Roswell want a government that works, that is effective, performs basic services and pushes every day to improve those services,” Henry said.

She added that Roswell’s employees are working at an exceptionally high level and that citizens must not take the work for granted.

City cuts funding to Tech Alpharetta by 20 percent

For much of the past year, members of the City Council have questioned how much return the city receives for providing the enterprise to foster young tech companies.

At an Aug. 5 City Council meeting, officials voted to reduce funding to the organization to $100,000 over the next year. The agreement covers a one-year term.

Since it began operations almost 10 years ago, the nonprofit has received tens of thousands each year from the city. Over the past several years, the city has contributed $125,000 annually to assist with its operation.

Councilman Ben Burnett raised the point at the meeting that the city had originally proposed offering the $100,000 contract for a three-year term. He pushed the council to reinstate that term, but that measure failed.

City Administrator Bob Regus said the idea of a long-term agreement would provide Tech Alpharetta a better planning tool for future development.

“There was some discussion to do a multi-year agreement, and it would certainly help Tech Alpharetta with its sponsorships… but we just never brought that forward,” Regus said.

City Attorney Sam Thomas said the city has a number of multi-year contracts, but funding is allocated each year by the City Council. Each multi-year contract, he said, has opt-out provisions that would allow the city to dissolve the agreement.

Mayor Jim Gilvin said Tech Alpharetta CEO Karen Cashion is constantly looking for opportunities for the nonprofit to generate revenues. Last year, the organization held an ag-tech conference at the Alpharetta Conference Center at Avalon as a means of raising money, but that event fell short of expectations.

“At this point, I don’t know that there’s anything that’s obviously going to generate tremendous revenues

above what’s already being grown organically by the organization through sponsorships and fees,” Gilvin said.

Councilman Jason Binder said he has optimism Cashion will grow Tech Alpharetta to a more self-sustaining level, but for now he feels more comfortable keeping the city’s obligation to one-year terms.

“I love where it’s going, and I think we’ve had some great conversations, so I don’t want it to seem that I’m taking away from that,” Binder said. But right now, he added, he doesn’t see any tangible proposals for future fundraising the organization is planning.

At the City Council’s annual retreat held last February, council members proposed the organization place greater emphasis on certain revenues, such as dues paid by members of the board of directors, which now are set at $500 per person. Officials said the dues could be set on a sliding scale, with some of the larger companies represented on the board paying higher dues.

Cashion assured council members that participation and commitment among board members has spiked dramatically over the past couple of years.

Roswell gives update on Holcomb Bridge traffic relief project

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell is at a crossroads with one of the largest transportation projects it has ever undertaken: Big Creek Parkway.

The $58.5 TSPLOST project, approved by voters November 2016, would improve connectivity and reduce congestion along Holcomb Bridge Road by constructing another road that crosses Ga. 400 with an overpass. City staff is now pouring over two potential options for the project, and on Aug. 8, held an open house to present them to the public.

Hundreds of residents met at City Hall to give their thoughts on the designs.

Roughly 70,000 vehicles use the Holcomb Bridge Road and Ga. 400 interchange each day. A new two-lane road just to the north would help reduce that number by about 8-10 thousand vehicles, Deputy Director of Transportation Rob Dell-Ross said.

“Is building Big Creek going to solve Holcomb Bridge? Absolutely not,” DellRoss said. “Traffic on Holcomb Bridge is going to be here as long as the foreseeable future. What Big Creek does is it is a backdoor to Holcomb Bridge. It’s a way for resident to get from one side of the city

to another without having to interact with that interchange. Because the ramps at Ga. 400 is what creates the congestion.”

He added that Big Creek Parkway will play a similar role to Alpharetta’s Encore Parkway.

The original alignment plans for Big Creek Parkway were approved by the Roswell City Council in 2013.

However, earlier this year, Roswell came up with a plan that could save millions on Big Creek Parkway and funnel that savings to improve traffic flow at the Holcomb Bridge Road and Ga. 400 interchange.

The city approached GDOT about a potential partnership to redesign and replace the interchange as part of the state’s Ga. 400 express lane project.

With a potential partnership on the table, Roswell City Council asked staff to come up with a way to save TSPLOST money on Big Creek and, as a result, staff proposed the current modified version, Dell-Ross said.

The modification would still handle about the same amount of traffic, save the city $17 million — which could be put toward the partnership with GDOT — and reduce wetland impact and residential displacement. Regardless of

New year brings new principals to area schools

Joel Peterson, Ed.S Northwestern Middle School Peterson began his career in education in 2010 after serving in the United States Navy where he was awarded the Naval and Marine Corp Achievement Medal for his service. Over the past nine years he worked in various school communities, most recently as an assistant principal at Hopewell Middle and Cambridge High School. Before being promoted to an administrative position, Peterson was a graduation coach and special education teacher for social studies and science at Chattahoochee High School, and a World History and U.S. history teacher in the Forsyth County School System. He is a native Texan and graduate of Texas A&M University.

Peterson takes over for former principal Charles Chester who is now principal at Langston Hughes High School in South Fulton.

Damian Bounds Elkins Pointe Middle School Originally from Erie, Penn., where he began his teaching career, Bounds moved to Georgia where he worked as a teacher and administrator in the Cobb County School System. He joined the Fulton County School System in 2013 as the assistant principal at Centennial High School before leaving to become the principal at Lakeside High School in DeKalb in 2016. Bounds is a graduate of Edinboro University (Penn.) with a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education and master’s and Educational Leadership degrees from Georgia State University. He is the father of two college-aged children and two in elementary school. Bounds replaces former principal Kindra Smith who is now prin-

Susan Walker, Ed.S Vickery Mill Elementary A native of Marietta, Susan Walker joined FCS in 2013 as the School Governance Facilitator helping to build the foundation of School Governance Councils and lead their strategic planning efforts. In January 2015, she became an assistant principal at Northview High School. Walker’s educational back-

ground includes three years with Teach for America where she helped teach English in the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. She has a bachelor’s degree from Emory University, a master’s degree from Georgia State University, and a specialist degree in educational leadership from Kennesaw State University.

Walker also is a graduate of the Georgia Education Policy Fellowship Program and LEAD Atlanta. She has two children currently attending schools in the Fulton County School System.

Kerri-Anne Williams Ocee Elementary Williams comes to Ocee with 16 years of experience as a teacher, instructional coach, assistant administrator and most recently as assistant principal of Northwood Elementary School in Roswell. She was recently named the 2019 Northeast Learning Community Assistant Principal of the Year. Williams is a graduate of the University of Michigan where she earned a Bachelor’s of Science in education, and also holds a Master’s in curriculum and instruction from the University of Florida and an Educational Specialist Degree from the University of West Georgia. She has four children.

Fulton Schools opens classes under new superintendent Emphasis on technology, school safety continues

Technology Updates FCS rolled out Infinite Campus over the summer, allowing parents online access to school announcements and their child’s grades, assignments, schedule and attendance. Parents can get realtime information of what is happening in their child’s classroom through the website or mobile app. Register for access at https://campus.fultonschools. org.

Parents can take the guesswork out of when to head to the bus stop by downloading the “Here Comes the Bus” app which tracks buses using GPS technology. Similar to ride-sharing apps, the bus shows up as an icon on a map, and users can follow its progress as it moves toward the bus stop. Download the program at www.herecomesthebus.com or through Apple or Google app stores.

An additional more low-tech way to track elementary bus riders will be used this year. Every child will be given a tag for their bookbag which contains their bus ID as well as an animal/color, so the student can easily match it with the corresponding sign on the outside of their bus.

The doors to 106 school buildings across the Fulton County School System open this week for the nearly 93,500 students expected to enroll for the 201920 school year. The district still stands as the fourth largest in the state, behind only Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb county school systems.

The school year opens under the direction of newly hired Superintendent Mike Looney, who began work in June, along with more than 600 new teachers hired over the summer to fill open positions.

District officials say they are set to begin the year at nearly full employment, with some vacancies yet to be filled in the traditionally hard to fill areas of math, science and special education.

The district’s total teaching force is approximately 7,000 educators.

In all, 14 of the district’s 106 schools will open with new principals, including five in North Fulton.

Over the summer, district staff were busy coordinating new construction and renovation projects, upgrading technology and making school campuses safer.

School-based renovations Holcomb Bridge, Hopewell, Northwestern and Webb Bridge are among the seven middle schools opening with renovated media centers that align with how students prefer to use what was once called a “library.” Over the summer, the media centers were gutted and reconfigured to provide expanded areas for students to work, study and interact.

Taking a page from the Apple playbook, the media centers have a “genius bar-like” space where students can go for help with their technology devices or to find other resources.

“Books still fill the library shelves,” said FCS spokeswoman Samantha Maxey, “But the racks themselves have become smaller since large collections — like encyclopedia sets — are quickly outdated.”

The centers contain more collaborative spaces with moveable furniture to encourage teamwork, along with small break-out rooms for independent study.

Other renovation projects at area schools include playground upgrades at Cogburn Woods, Shakerag and Wilson

School Safety All Fulton County schools will undergo a comprehensive safety and security assessment this year funded by the $30,000 per school grant provided by Gov. Brian Kemp.

“The results will make emergency processes even more [effective],” said Maxey, who noted the results will not be shared publicly to protect details of the safety plans.

The remainder of the grant will be used to implement the improvements identified by the assessments.

Modern security cameras continue to be installed in all Fulton school buildings allowing facial recognition and other appearance searches via desktops, monitoring stations and mobile devices. All schools will have these systems in place in the next two years.

The FCS Emergency Operations Center is now monitored around the clock to better respond to active threats or concerns and to provide an extra level of support and officer safety.

“Personnel can easily view security cameras at each school and other district facilities, [then] information is relayed directly to any school police officers who are on duty,” Maxey said.

Fulton County reduces municipal election costs

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Fulton County Commission adopted a resolution Aug. 7 that will give cities a reprieve in costs of municipal elections.

The resolution, put forward by Commissioner Liz Hausmann and co-sponsored by Commissioner Bob Ellis, has the county absorb more of the cost for the elections.

It takes away the 10 percent administration fee and overhead costs that cities were to be charged, and instead sets a rate of $2.96 per registered voter for the initial election and $2.46 per voter in a run-off.

“Basically, this is just the cost for this year’s actual election that does not include any of our normal operating costs for the department that was included in some of the original estimates,” Hausmann said.

The resolution will only impact this year’s municipal elections and will be reevaluated next year when the state adopts new election equipment.

Earlier this summer, many cities had sticker shock when they saw what Fulton County would be charging for the administration of the municipal election.

In Alpharetta, the cost was to be $202,000, almost twice the $124,000 charged in 2017. In Roswell and Johns Creek, the estimates were closer to $500,000.

About a week after the original estimates were sent out, the county went back to the cities with updated quotes, lowering the cost of elections by limiting early voting. Still, some city officials were upset with the payment scheme.

“I continue to be disappointed in the way Fulton County treats its cities as it relates to this,” Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker said Aug. 5. “I think it is entirely punitive to have the citizens pay these kind of amounts and still pay the same general fund amount to Fulton County, when all the other counties in the area charge the equivalent of an administrative fee to run a November off-year election.”

Bodker said he supported Hausmann’s proposal and urged other city officials to do the same.

The Fulton resolution passed 5-1, with Commissioner Marvin Arrington opposed.

“I was getting pushback from the southern cities about the bill being exorbitant,” Arrington said. “I’m in support of taking some measures to reduce it, but I would rather have it uniform than to try to say we’re going to do this in odd years, and this in even years.”

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — In a 5-1 vote Aug. 7, Fulton County commissioners rolled back the rate on property taxes.

For 2019, the general fund property tax rate, also known as a millage rate, will be 9.899 mills, or $9.90 in taxes for every $1,000 of assessed value. The levy is a reduction from last year’s rate of 10.2 mills.

“I think the fact we had no public comment speaks volumes,” Commissioner Liz Hausmann said. “Mad people tend to show up and let us know their

thoughts on something, so I would assume the silence here indicates we’re on the right path with the millage rate.”

Commissioner Marvin Arrington cast the sole dissenting vote.

For most North Fulton residents, county property taxes make up a greater portion of their tax bill than city taxes, but far less than what they pay in school taxes.

This year the school board is considering a rate of 17.796 mills.

Local election qualifying begins Aug. 19 ROSWELL/ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Qualifying for municipal elections in Roswell and Alpharetta is days away.

The qualifying period, Aug. 19-23, is set by state law. However, the law allows cities some leeway to determine which days to allow filings. Qualifying must be for at least three days but no more than five.

Four at-large seats are up for election this year in Roswell, and candidates have a five-day window to file. Qualifying runs Aug. 19-23, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

The four seats up for election in Roswell are: Post 1, currently held by Marcelo Zapata; Post 2, currently held by Mike Palermo; Post 3, previously held by Sean Groer; and municipal court judge, currently held by Brian Hansford. Groer resigned from his seat Aug. 11, because his family moved out of town.

Roswell qualifying fees are $540 for council seats and $1,386 for municipal judge.

“GDOT’s express lanes project, building two lanes in each direction, is moving forward completely separate from our Big Creek Project,” Dell-Ross said.

“Arguably, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s hard to imagine we’re ever going to have another opportunity like that. Do we want to find a way to make that partnership work?”

The answer to that question is time sensitive. The city has been talking with the state about the project for years now, and it has less than a year to decide on a partnership with GDOT, he added.

The original planned alignment includes two phases. Plans for Phase 1 have already begun and include widening Warsaw Road from two to four lanes and adding second left-turn lanes at the Holcomb Bridge Road and Warsaw Road intersection. Construction is expected to begin on that portion in early 2020.

“It’s a much-needed intersection improvement,” Dell-Ross said. “It will help solve a lot of the existing congestion issues we have out there right now.”

Phase 2 has two options — the original and the revised plan.

The first option, the original alignment, includes a new two-lane road from

municipal elections. Candidates may file at City Hall on those days from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Voters will cast ballots for mayor and three council seats, all of them at-large.

Alpharetta’s three council seats are: Post 4, currently held by John Hipes; Post 5, currently held by Jason Binder; and Post 6, currently held by Dan Merkel. All three have announced plans to seek another term.’ Mayor Jim Gilvin has likewise declared his intention to run.

Alpharetta mayoral candidates must pay a qualifying fee of $900, and candidates for City Council must pay a qualifying fee of $450.

To be eligible for office in either city, candidates must: • Meet the requirements of a qualified voter in the city • Be at least 21 years old prior to the election date • Continue to reside in the city during the seat’s term Roswell requires candidates to have been a bona fide resident of the city for at least one year prior to the Nov. 5 election. Alpharetta has a residency requirement of six months.

Warsaw Road east over Ga. 400 to Old Alabama Road. It also includes a new twolane connection road from Big Creek Parkway south to Old Holcomb Bridge Road.

Other improvements include a roundabout on Warsaw Road at the new Big Creek Parkway and a complete street on Holcomb Woods Parkway, east of Old Alabama Road.

The newly proposed plan calls for using the existing Old Holcomb Bridge Road to make a new connection west over Ga. 400 to Old Alabama Road on the east. The entire road would be a complete street. But, unlike the original plan, the new route would connect to Holcomb Bridge Road on the west side of Ga. 400, instead of Warsaw Road.

The new proposal will decrease Holcomb Bridge traffic by 10 percent more than the original plan and will provide several options for future upgrades and connections, including a tie to Warsaw Road, Dell-Ross said.

The original alignment plans would create a shorter route but is $15-$20 million more expensive than the proposed alignment, in part because it goes through 8-10 apartment buildings that would be expensive for the city to acquire. The original plan also includes an expensive bridge over wetlands, while the proposed alignment reduces impacts on the wetlands, Dell-Ross said.

The Roswell City Council has not made any formal decisions about the next steps for Big Creek Parkway. They were scheduled to discuss the project and potential options at an Aug. 12 work session.

Chadwick Operation School Bell is the one universal national program operating in all 120 regional locations. In 2018, in Atlanta alone, Operation School Bell distributed wardrobes through 235 elementary and middle schools to provide 14,707 students with every item needed for a full week of changes of brand new clothing, as well as contributions of hygiene kits, shoes and a backpack. Ellis and Lee Morris had supported a rate of 9.77 mills, the minimum needed to fund the budget. But the Finance Department recommended a higher rate, 10.2 mills, as a means of maintaining reserves and securing millage rate reductions over the next four years.

At the time, the opposing commissioners, who all represent North Fulton, were skeptical the county would follow through on the plan to continue to lower the rate.

However, this year’s rate is lower than the Finance Department had predicted last year. It had predicted the county would need a rate of 10.12 mills this year, about .2 mills more than what PuzzleJunction.com was eventually passed.

Brick-and-mortar travel company provides edge over online

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — In an age where more and more services move online for convenience, Aladdin Travel Services co-owner and CFO Richard Gerber says customers can find more offers and security in person.

Both woman- and veteran-owned, Alpharetta-based Aladdin Travel Services has been serving the Atlanta area since 1987 when it was started by co-owner and President Valerie Gerber. It provides a variety of travel services, including air travel, cruises, wellness and relaxation trips, safaris and more.

They haven’t slowed down since the start. Richard estimates the company processes about 180,000 bookings each year for individuals and corporate clients, including film agencies.

The success is partially because of the advantages a brick-and-mortar travel company has over online versions, he said.

One of the biggest issues the company has seen is misrepresentation online.

“They try to be ethical, I think, and they try to do things with integrity,” Richard said. “But there are occasions where people run into problems, and there’s no recourse… Online, once you send, you send, and you’re finished. If you run into any problems, you’re out of luck.”

Leisure and film agent Kelli Hardy said she has seen many cases where someone books a trip, but when they get to the hotel, the room’s flooded, or there’s cockroaches everywhere, or the property is not at the waterfront as advertised. And there’s often no options

Aladdin Travel Services, however, can provide help in such cases.

“There’s always going to be problems with travel, but we can minimize that and intercede on your behalf,” Richard said. “We can act as an intermediary and take care of things if you have a problem, because we know the people at the properties, the vendors involved.”

Security, likewise, is a big part of

their business, especially for their corporate clients, and it can’t be found with online companies, Richard said.

“We can ensure that wherever you go, we are aware of any precautions that need to take place, and we can advise you on that,” Richard said. “If there is any issue that takes place, we can extract you and get you to a safe place.”

A brick-and-mortar travel company can also help people save money, Richard added.

Similarly, the company employs travel agents specialized in different areas who are familiar with various companies and can plan entire trips.

Is your neighborhood cool? Is there a there, there?

I stumbled upon a website called The Culture Trip. It’s kind of a travel site with an Anthony Bourdainish tint to it. You type in a city and it Geoff smith tells you what is cool Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com there. The article I was reading was titled “The Coolest Neighborhoods in Atlanta.”

Brenda and I lived in Atlanta 20 years ago in a neighborhood called Candler Park. There was not a lot to do in Atlanta back then, other than the big attractions.

You had a small handful of restaurants on Crescent Avenue in Midtown, the Virginia Highlands and the eclectic Little Five Points. Our very small duplex was within walking distance to Little Five Points, and we would go there for music, dinner or a coffee. In terms of defined entertainment districts back then, Little Five Points was the coolest thing we had.

With roots going back to being the local headquarters for the Hippie hang-out, it carried that creative and fun vibe through the years. We still never knew exactly what we were going to run into in the way of street entertainment back then.

It was right around that time though that people started flooding back into Atlanta and energizing neighborhoods that had before been considered run-down.

The Old Fourth Ward was a neighborhood that you only ended up in after you took a wrong turn somewhere. And now it has Ponce City Market, the Beltline running through it and was considered the second coolest spot in Atlanta in the article. East Atlanta was trying to become something and at the time seemed to be centered around a dive-bar that always had really, really strange movies playing in an upstairs loft area. According to the article, it was on the top of the cool list.

Suppliers will typically offer a percentage discount, like taking a 1% discount off your invoice, if you pay them quicker. This could help you reduce your costs of goods sold, which translates to more profit for your business.

Renegotiating your supplier terms, especially with those that you are doing more business with, may help you on both payment timing and discounts.

Creating a win/win scenario where your supplier is getting paid quicker and you are getting a bigger discount is one example of how this might work.

Negotiating terms with your suppliers should be an ongoing process in any small business as there is a direct correlation to improving working capital, cash flow and profits.

Canton Street in Roswell my hometown of Roswell. Our intown friends feigned excitement for us. But every time we tried to get back together, we were usually the ones making the trek, back into Atlanta. Canton Street hadn’t taken off yet and when friends did come up, we entertained in our home.

Since then though, Roswell, like many suburban cities, has grown to develop several different areas that have what Gertrude Stein called a there, there.

Canton Street is, well, Canton Street.

The neighborhoods are developing their own character. If you’re lucky enough to be invited to hang out in the Brookfield County Club Clubhouse on a Saturday during college football season, bring the children, you are in for a real treat.

There is a real vibe swelling just east of Ga. 400. Martin’s Landing, where I grew up, sprawls along the Chattahoochee River. There are protected woods with trails, a lake, all three pools are popping during the summer, and there is going to be an all-day music festival this October. Big Creek Park is a mile away and is one of the most visited mountain biking destinations in the area, and an awesome farm-to-table restaurant and brewery called From the Earth Brewing Company hosts quality live music, serves great food and beer. It has helped turn the Connexion shopping center into a sort of town center for the immediate area. From the Earth boasts beers named after songs by Widespread

Panic, the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers, to name a few, and has inspired the Roswell Food & Beverage Festival this coming October 27.

Stories like this are happening all over the metro area. A lot of communities that were developed back in a time when our planning and development policies were nowhere near as sophisticated as they are today. They weren’t looking hard to create a “sense of place.”

It was more like a refugee camp of whitecollar workers moving by the thousands to Atlanta, and they were just trying to figure out where to put them all.

Residents today want more. They want a town center. They are developing their own style and sense of place. To my intown friends, many of whom are still in Atlanta, while you and The Culture Trip may not see beyond the 12-laned I-285, we’ve got cool out here now. Feel free to make the trip.

The program will take place in two one-hour sessions with a 10-minute break. Topics include credit scores, bank accounts, basic budgeting, borrowing and savings among others. The semi-

nars have been sponsored by Southern Bank Equipment and the Rotary Club of Alpharetta as a fundraiser that Rotary is undertaking for a clean water service project in Tanzania later this year.

Let’s talk aging and bladder control While it is normal to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed discussing bladder issues such as incontinence, it is important to understand just how common these problems are for aging women. The involuntary loss or leaking of urine is a common syndrome that affects at least 1 in 3 older women, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Symptoms may range from minor issues such as slight bladder leaks to the need for the protection of an adult diaper to prevent the complete and sudden loss of bladder control. Chief of Surgery for Emory University Hospital and Division Director for Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Gina Northington, MD, PhD informs her patients that while common, “Bladder leakage is NOT normal aging. There are often functional problems of the nerves and muscles within the pelvic floor that can be treated to improve bladder control.”

Get ready to look for Georgia rocks!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of being part of the Summer Adventures Day festivities at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. That event, held on Sunday afternoon, gave visitors (especially STEVE HUDSON kids) the opportunity Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net to sample outdoor activities ranging from canoeing and hiking to flycasting — and gold panning!

Gold panning is where I came in.

This year, I carried my gold pans up to the Nature Center where I set up my portable “creek” (a large plastic tub) and then showed kids and parents how much fun it can be to prospect for Georgia gold.

The folks I got to visit with seemed fascinated by it all. We talked about how gold was discovered in Georgia and how prospectors recovered the gold using gold pans.

“What kind of pan is best?” asked one young visitor.

I showed them some of the gold pans

I like to use.

“That looks like my mom’s frying pan!” observed another. “Can I use her frying pan to look for gold?”

To that question, my answer was “probably not.”

Then the panning demonstration began. I dumped some potential paydirt into my pan, submerged the pan in my portable creek, and got to work. A few minutes later I’d reduced that panful of dirt down to just a tablespoon or two of concentrates. I swirled the water gently over the remaining material. And there it was…

“Gold!” observed one young man, drawing the word out. “Go-o-o-o-ld!”

We oohed and ahhed over the gold, and then — inevitably — the conversation turned to other treasures from the mineral world.

“I’ve got a piece fool’s gold!”

“I’ve got a quartz crystal!”

“I’ve got a fossil!”

Fool’s gold…quartz…fossils — they can be found right here in Georgia, and collecting them is great fun too! “Rockhounding,” it’s called, and it’s something that I’ve enjoyed for years.

fishing. In fact, even when I’m fishing, I may have one eye on the ground in case something exciting shows up. So far, I haven’t discovered that fist-sized gold nugget winking at me from the bottom of a creek (though hope springs eternal). But I have found lots of other neat goodies — large sheets of mica, sparkly pieces of quartz and amethyst, rich red garnets and natural crosses of the mineral staurolite (also known as “fairy crosses”). Once or twice, I’ve even found a piece of beautiful blue aquamarine.

And then there are fossils. The first fossil I ever found in Georgia was what’s called a “crinoid,” a creature that lived on the bottom of warm, shallow seas more than 200 million years ago. The one I found came to light in a roadcut up in the northwest part of the state.

Since then, I’ve found shell fossils, plant fossils and even trilobite fossils, all right here in Georgia.

Some of the kids and their parents stuck around after the gold panning was done, and we talked about how much fun it can be to collect rocks. I could tell that their imaginations were fired up too.

“But Mr. Steve,” one asked me, “what do you do with them after you find them?”

“I’m glad you asked!” I said.

After each rock hunting trip, I’ll go through what I found and pick out the best one or two specimens. I’ll identify them, writing down the identification on a little piece of paper. Then I’ll put rock specimen and ID label together into one of the compartments of an egg carton.

Yep, an ordinary egg carton! The ones sized for a dozen eggs are ideal. They make a great place to store small rock specimens — they’re easy to stack and available for free.

So that’s your homework this week.

Round up an egg carton or two.

Then over the next couple of months, as the weather cools, maybe we’ll talk about a few places around Georgia where you too can do a little rockhounding of your own!

I hate running; I love having run.

Running after just a month or so off hurts my pride, my thighs, my confidence, my calves, my brain, my chest and my relationship with neighbors who don’t wave back at me.

I wake up, maybe throw some water in my bedhead, stretch for far too long, and get the right shirt, pants, shoes, headphones and finally hit play on the right podcast. I am more obsessed with music than really anything else in my life, but when I run, I need someone to just talk in my ear about anything that is not running.

Bassy hip hop, loud punk, soothing folk rock, none of it distracts me enough from the task at hand.

I need something where I find the conversation engaging, or can ask myself if I agree with the host’s takes, and invariably it’s a podcast about NBA basketball or movies or the author John Green. Everyone has their thing.

Essentially, I need my mind to be somewhere other than just counting mailboxes while every inch of me hurts and wants to call it quits early.

There are a lot of things about running that I do enjoy.

I like getting myself up early (the only possible time to run in this state is before 9 a.m.). I like getting outside a little, because my job and hobbies mostly put in me in a seat with air conditioning running. I also like the idea that I, a short,

stocky kid with bad knees, am a runner.

Or at least that I am someone who runs. I am someone who runs without much of a reason anymore. I no longer have to get in shape for high school lacrosse practices or pass a presidential fitness test.

I do like the idea that I can maybe look slightly better and more fit if I continue this long enough. But mostly I like getting up and trying to get a little farther than I did the previous day, and even if I do little other activity for the rest of the afternoon, I can at least feel pride in the fact that I have moved my feet across a long stretch of asphalt with the sun on my back, up and down hills, around the cruel circle of my neighborhood’s main drag and got home sweaty and tired.

I don’t believe in what lunatic long distance people refer to as “runner’s high.” I don’t think I will ever do this seriously enough to achieve that, and I mostly just feel like I’m going to die when I get done running a couple miles, but I do believe in feeling better after I have run, simply because I have run.

Also, I don’t always get farther than I did the previous day. I remind myself that growth is not always linear. Sometimes (okay, often times) I have to walk for a stretch when I get to the worst hill in the subdivision.

That feeling is not great. Walking is not the goal of running. But it can be part of progress.

One of my English professors once said that they hate writing, but they love having written. I hate running. I love having run.

Arts Center to host anti-bullying movie, discussion

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It’s no secret that bullying is an issue students face daily.

And with a new school year underway, local author and screenwriter Mike Buchanan is helping students, especially bystanders, take a stand against bullying.

Buchanan, who taught for 32 years in high school, will offer a free screening of his movie, “The Fat Boy Chronicles,” followed by a discussion on Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Alpharetta Arts Center, 238 Canton St. The movie, based on a book Buchanan cowrote with Diane Lang, follows fictional student Jimmy Winterpock as he deals with bullying because of his weight.

“It’s the world students live in,” Buchanan said. “Kids connect with it. They understand the pain of being picked on.

If it’s not for being overweight, it’s for being too smart, too skinny, for wearing glasses — everybody has something that potentially makes them a target.”

He added that students see themselves somewhere in the narrative, whether it’s the student that gets picked on, the student that bullies or the bystander. It’s the last group that’s the largest and the one he tries to address in school talks.

“They’re the ones that you need to get in the mix, because they can make the biggest difference,” Buchanan said.

“If there’s five kids saying, ‘Hey, that’s not cool,’ or if the athletes decided that they don’t want a culture of bullying, it can change everything in the school.

Because, right or wrong, it’s the athletes who tend to be the most respected kids in many schools.”

The movie and discussion will also cover topics like mental health, cutting, abuse and suicide.

“We didn’t write the book thinking we were going to address these issues,” Buchanan said. “We just wrote a story, with much of it based on our own experiences.”

Winterpock’s story is largely based off of the true account of a student named Doug Hennig who struggled with his weight-loss journey, bullying and suicidal thoughts.

Buchanan said Hennig approached him and Lang to tell them his story.

“He told me about how difficult it was,” Buchanan said. “He told us, ‘If you could write a book that talks about what it’s like to be the overweight, picked-on kid and have a hopeful ending, I know it would help a lot of people.’”

The story is told through a series of journal entries for English class that include lighthearted school tales as well as more serious, introspective sections.

Read This Page,” changed after critiques from a pediatric doctor and other writers. “[The doctor] said most of the problems that teens have, that people have, is that everybody dances around the topic instead of just confronting it head on,” Buchanan said.

The response to the book and movie, Buchanan said, has been overwhelmingly positive. The book has become required reading at some of the local high schools. And he regularly speaks at screenings and schools across the nation about “The Fat Boy Chronicles” and its anti-bullying messages.

“It’s very frustrating when people don’t want to admit that they have a problem,” Buchanan said. “Every school has issues, and I’ve been at some schools where they’ve been really proactive. But the schools that have bullying problems don’t want to admit that they do.”

This is the first time a movie has been screened at the Arts Center, and staff is planning to host similar events more often. Buchanan said staff is already looking to show his most recent work, a historical movie about Alpharetta called “Farmhouse,” in the coming months.

Branch & Barrel donates to Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Branch & Barrel team presented the Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation with a check for $2,000 as the first quarterly donation from an ongoing program that continues through 2019.

The owners and culinary talent at Avalon’s Branch & Barrel Craft Bar & Kitchen are helping the foundation make a difference for Alpharetta’s Department of Public Safety employees.

The donation funds are gathered by the restaurant through allocating a portion of the proceeds from each drink special and Brussels sprouts appetizer purchase.

The promotion is a way for patrons to try the Beam Suntory Cocktail of the Month special and an appetizer while contributing back to their Alpharetta First Responders. For each Cocktail of the Month purchased, $1 is donated to the foundation, and for each Brussels sprout appetizer, $0.50 is donated.

29th annual Rivers Alive Cleanup returns to Roswell ROSWELL, Ga. — Rivers Alive, Georgia’s annual river cleanup, comes to Roswell on Sept. 28. The event is presented by Keep Roswell Beautiful and the City of Roswell.

Homeowners associations, Scout troops, schools, churches, clubs and service organizations are being asked to pull together to make a difference for the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries.

The cleanup will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Riverside Park.

Volunteers are needed to pick up litter along local roads and in the river, remove privet (an invasive plant species) at Riverside Park and mark storm drains in surrounding neighborhoods.

Participants will need to bring their own watercraft. Awards will be given at the end of the cleanup for the most trash collected and most unusual item found.

Roswell announces fall Citizens Police Academy ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Police Department is inviting Roswell residents and Roswell business owners to attend the Citizens Police Academy. The free program is designed to introduce the public to various functions of police work.

During the 10-week academy, participants will become familiar with the aspects of the Roswell Police Department. Alpharetta announces Wire & Wood Music Festival headliners ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Wire & Wood Alpharetta Music Festival returns to downtown Alpharetta for its seventh

Metro Water District announces 18th annual water essay contest ATLANTA — The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District is calling for metro Atlanta students in grades 6-8 to enter its 18th annual Water Essay Contest.

This year, participants are asked to answer the question, “How do you value water?” The average metro Atlantan uses around 50 gallons of water a day at home, most of which is used for drinking, bathing, washing clothes and dishes, and flushing toilets. Huge amounts of water are used to produce the food, energy and other products we use daily.

This contest challenges students to consider the value of water deeply.

All students in grades 6-8 in the 15 counties that make up the Metro Water District are invited to participate by submitting 300-500 word essays by Oct. 25.

CrossFit Dynamo benefits cancer research with 24 in 24 event

BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — CrossFit Dynamo is preparing to kick off its third annual 24 in 24 fundraising event Aug. 23 to benefit the Rally Foundation for childhood cancer research. This year will include more workout equipment and a new speaker system to increase motivation.

CrossFit Dynamo raised $82,000 last year, and has upped its goal to $100,000 this year.

Participants will be asked to perform 24 workouts in 24 hours with all proceeds and donations going to the foundation. CrossFit Dynamo’s affiliate owner and Head Transformation Coach John Manser came up with the idea for the event based on a charity event with which he was previously involved.

“I had been a part of a cycling event called the 24 Hours of Booty, which was a 24-hour cycling event held at Stone Mountain and then, later, at Sandy Springs for four to five years,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the event had to withdraw from Atlanta, so I came up with the 24 in 24 to fill the void.

The owners of Dutch Monkey Doughnuts put Manser in touch with the Rally Foundation for Children’s Cancer Research.

“We hit it off and here we are in our 3rd year, having raised nearly $125,000 thus far,” he said.

Founded in 2005, the Rally Foundation started when founder and CEO Dean Crowe spoke with a 17 year-old boy fighting a brain tumor for the second time in two years. When Crowe offered to help the boy, he simply requested for Crowe to find a way to raise money for cancer research. Since its inception, the Rally Foundation has raised over $16.7 million in childhood cancer research grants from around the world.

Donators have a say in how their funds are granted and are ensured that 93 cents for every dollar donated goes directly to the cause. For every $50,000 raised, a grant is directed by the benefactor to a promising research. For this reason, Manser selected the Rally Foundation as the center for their charity work.

“I was looking for a local charity that ran lean, with most of the money raised going to benefit the actual cause… Some of the Rally Kids have come to the event and shared in the experience, which is meaningful to all the participants,” said Manser. “This year, we as a group, directed a grant to Dr. Oh, of Emory University, for his work on DIPG, a brain cancer that works entirely too effectively… Knowing exactly where the money is going and getting to know the people involved in finding cures is a huge differentiator for our participants.”

‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ comes to the Georgia Ensemble Theatre

ROSWELL, Ga. — Georgia Ensemble Theatre will open its 27th season this September with a southern classic from Tennessee Williams, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”
