ROSWELL, Ga. — Dust still hasn’t settled from the mishandling of Roswell’s Oxbo Road realignment project it seems.

Seven months after revelations of significant delays and millions in cost overruns on the project, some Roswell residents continue to doubt whether city officials won’t make the same mistakes.

This time, though, the target was a project consultant who may have had little if anything to do with Oxbo Road.

The Roswell City Council approved an initial $1 million contract with engineering consultant Atkins North America on May 9 to manage capital improvement projects funded by the second Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or TSPLOST. Atkins, based in Atlanta, was the only company to respond to the city’s request for qualifications in March.

Ostensibly, the agreement runs for five years, with payment of $1 million each year. The City Council has the option to cancel the contract during the five-

Car burglary reported on Webb Bridge Road ALPHARETTA, Ga. –– An Alpharetta woman reported more than $300 worth of items were stolen from her parked car along Webb Bridge Road April 27.

The victim said someone had smashed out the front passenger-side window sometime between 7-8 p.m. and had taken a Reebok bag containing a Tory Burch wallet, her driver’s license, American Express card, $20 cash, Coach reading glasses, Coach wallet and Apple earphones.

Thief takes firearm from woman’s car ALPHARETTA, Ga. –– An Alpharetta woman reported someone broke into her car April 29 while it was parked on Carriage Trace. The victim stated she had parked her vehicle in front of her apartment building for the evening.

PUBLIC SAFETY When she went to her vehicle the next day, she noticed the doors were unlocked and papers were strewn throughout the vehicle.

She then noticed a blue Los Angeles Dodgers baseball hat was missing from the backseat floorboard and a black 9mm Taurus G3 handgun, located in the glovebox had been taken.

The victim told police her vehicle automatically locks and unlocks once the key fob is nearby, and she does not know how someone could have accessed her vehicle.

No surveillance cameras were in the apartment complex.

Roswell man scammed in extortion incident ROSWELL, Ga. –– A Roswell man was scammed May 3 of $2,400 after a caller claiming to be with Fulton County Police said he faced a bench warrant for failing to appear for jury duty. The victim said the caller had claimed to work for the Fulton County Clerk.

The victim said he was convinced the caller was legitimate because she had his driver’s license number. She told him he needed to send $2,400 to clear the bench warrant off his record, so he sent the money through the Zillow app. After he made the payment, he went to the office

address provided by the caller and found no one there.

He then reported the incident to Roswell police.

HVAC supplies stolen at apartment complex ROSWELL, Ga. –– A pair of air conditioner condensers and seven bottles of refrigerant was stolen May 3 from a leasing office for Holcombs Pond Apartments on Holcomb Bridge Road.

Police said two maintenance employees arrived to work and saw the garage door of the maintenance building had been pried off its track.

Police are securing surveillance footage to check for possible suspects in the theft.

Apple products taken in vehicle burglary ROSWELL, Ga. –– A Ball Ground woman reported her car was burglarized March 2 while parked on Atlanta Street in Roswell.

The woman said the car’s rear passenger window was shattered, and her Apple MacBook Air, iPad and Apple Pencil were taken. The losss was set at approximately $1,700 worth of items taken.

The victim said her alarm system to her car never went off.

Roswell police charge 12 for illegal street racing

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Police Department has charged 12 suspects, including a 17 and 20-year-old from North Fulton, for their involvement in an intersection takeover on Easter Sunday.

Both the juvenile, of Alpharetta, and Taylor Levey, of Roswell, are facing at least one charge of city ordinance – non-driver participation in street racing and/or reckless driving exhibitions.

The other suspects, ranging in age from 18 to 26 years old, are all from outside North Fulton, and at least one remains at-large.

Roswell police spokesman Tim Lupo said on May 4 that warrants have been obtained for 21-year-old Jhoan CastroDelgado, of Bethlehem, but he is not yet in custody. He is facing charges of reckless stunt driving, fleeing and attempting to elude and driving on the wrong side of the road.

According to an incident report obtained by the Herald, at around 6:30

p.m. on April 17, Cherokee County 911 notified the Roswell Police Department that street racers had moved over to the Houze Road and Rucker Road intersection after being seen in the area of Arnold Mill Road and Cox Road.

John Lamb, owner of Bagel Boys, said he was excited to be back in downtown and interact with the community in a special way.

Lamb has three Bagel Boys locations, and he said not only does “Alpharetta rock” but the community members make it even more worthwhile.

Officer Chris Benfield said it’s his first year managing the social media and lead recruiter branch for the department.

Benfield decided being a part of Taste this year would allow more of a presence for the department.

“We wanted to recruit because we do need more applicants, but also it’s a good way to show off the city,” Benfield said.

“We’re looking at the interaction with the public that most people don’t get with the police, fire department or 911 operators.”

Wellstar building cancer treatment destination

ROSWELL, Ga. — Wellstar North Fulton Hospital is investing approximately $10 million to expand its cancer center program over the next year.

Jon-Paul Croom, president of Wellstar North Fulton Hospital, says the fully comprehensive cancer center will house surgical, medical and radiation oncology, and an approximately $6 million CyberKnife system to treat everything from brain tumors and prostate cancers to lung cancers.

CyberKnife technology, a noninvasive option for surgically complex or inoperable tumors that enables the radiation oncologist to deliver targeted, high doses of radiation, requires no anesthesia, hospitalization or lengthy recovery period. Wellstar North Fulton’s sister facility, Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, is currently the only program in Atlanta that offers patients with this capability.

Up till now, patients have had to wait up to four weeks to get on the Cyberknife machine. Dr. Mark McLaughlin, a radiation oncologist who is spearheading the expansion, said anywhere from 10 to 15 patients a week are

transferred to the Kennestone location from North Fulton to have their radiation treatment.

“They’re either outpatients who live in the Roswell, Alpharetta area, or they’re in-patients who have to be transferred from one hospital to the other to get radiation because they’re so sick,” McLaughlin said. “Our expectation is, once we get situated here and have full-time staff, that is going to grow incrementally.”

McLaughlin has been at Wellstar North Fulton for about three and a-half years and with the Wellstar system since 2005. Before that, he worked at the Mayo Clinic for nearly 14 years but came back to take care of his parents when they had cancer.

Having been on both sides, McLaughlin said he hopes Wellstar North Fulton can become a “cancer destination” for the community.

“When my parents were diagnosed with cancer, I remember I had to go to one building, to another, to another,” McLaughlin said. “It wasn’t all concrete.

At North Fulton, our goal is to have everything together, so the patient can come to one destination and meet multiple physicians. It promotes efficiency, quicker care and better communication.”

Croom said this will all complement Wellstar North Fulton’s STAT Clinics, which is one of the things that makes its cancer services so unique. Atkins: Continued from Page 1 year term.

During the May 9 meeting, residents Jason Yowell and Janet Russell raised concerns with Atkins, insisting that because the firm served as the program manager for TSPLOST I, which helped fund the Oxbo Road realignment project, they should not handle TSPLOST II. But, interim Transportation Director Dan Skalsky said, Atkins has a clean record with the City of Roswell.

In April 2017, the City Council approved a $1.2 million contract with Atkins for three years with the option to renew for two additional one-year terms.

Skalsky said the company worked on the entire transportation funding program, including a few “very large” projects like Phase 1 and 2 of the Big Creek Parkway project, but not on Oxbo Road.

The Oxbo Road project was proposed more than a decade ago to solve a host of safety and mobility problems at Ga. 9 and Oxbo Road near Mimosa Boulevard, among other areas.

An independent investigation conducted by the law firm Jarrard & Davis revealed in September 2021 that extreme mismanagement by city staff and the city attorney had led to significant delays and millions of dollars in cash settlements for the project. It also concluded the delays were due to issues with property and right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation and slow construction, all things Atkins will now be handling.

The Oxbo Road project is expected to be completed by December 2023 and cost $18.4 million, more than double its original estimated cost of $7 million in 2016.

Skalsky said while residents’ concerns are legitimate, Atkins had “zero” responsibility for what happened with the Oxbo Road project. He added that Atkins is not mentioned anywhere in the 34-page Jarrard & Davis report.

“The project responsibilities and the responsibilities of the program manager are dictated by the city,” Skalsky said.

“We are the client. We tell them what to do. We ask for their qualifications in certain areas. … Oxbo was pretty much out of the gate, out of the drawing boards and into the procurement process, and the city was handling the land acquisition process for that project [when Atkins came on board].”

In hindsight, Skalsky said, he wishes Atkins had been more “aggressively involved” but that it may have been too late.

“I fully intend to make sure that their roles and responsibilities going forward are more fully accountable and responsible for overall program performance,” Skalsky said. “And, if we are successful in moving this forward, one of the first things that they will be involved in doing

Yowell didn’t buy it.

“I don’t think there’s a worse way to spend a million dollars of city money,” Yowell said. “I don’t think the fact that they weren’t mentioned by Jarrard & Davis is a ringing endorsement, because it sounds like they didn’t do anything. …

I can’t believe that the scope now is so much more encompassing that they’re willing to entertain taking $200,000 less for a whole lot more work. Something’s not right in this picture.”

Brian Bolick, Atkins vice president and southeast senior division manager, responded to the criticism by reiterating that the company had nothing to do with the Oxbo Road project, because it was tasked with handling other “very targeted assignments.” In 2017, Bolick said, city leadership decided they wanted their own engineers and project managers to handle Oxbo.

“We work for cities of all sizes,” Bolick said. “I personally worked for years for the City of Flowery Branch, which is much smaller, and we work for the City of Atlanta. We’re one of the top designers for Georgia [Department of Transportation]. This is what we do. We do it very well, and I think if you talk to the clients that we have done this for, you will find that they are very well pleased with what we do.”

Skalsky backed him up.

“Atkins will help with our speed of delivery,” Skalsky said. “I also believe it’ll increase our ability and capacity to deliver projects on time and on budget.”

Councilman Mike Palermo moved to approve the contract, which received a second from Councilman Peter Vanstrom.

It passed 5-0, with Councilman Marcelo Zapata absent.

First passed by Fulton County voters in 2016, TSPLOST is a .75 percent sales tax whose revenue is divided among the county’s 14 cities outside Atlanta to pay for transportation improvements such as road widenings, sidewalks and intersection improvements. Atlanta has its own transportation sales tax.

Voters agreed to renew TSPLOST for another five-year term last fall. It is expected to generate between $70 million and $80 million for the City of Roswell over that term.

MARTA expands ride-share to Alpharetta core locations ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta residents will soon have another alternative to Uber and Lyft, at least in certain areas.

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority is expanding its MARTA Reach on-demand ride-share service to a zone of Alpharetta that includes Avalon, the downtown district and the Georgia State University Alpharetta campus. Beginning May 30, the service will provide connection to MARTA bus routes 85, 140, 141 and 142.

Rides will cost $2.50, the same as a regular MARTA fare. MARTA Reach runs from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. on weekdays. Because it is a ride-sharing service, other passengers may be picked up and dropped off during a trip.

“This is the first expansion of MARTA’s service in Alpharetta in many years, and we are excited to see them introducing this solution,” Alpharetta Mayor Jim Gilvin said. “Last mile connectivity, the gap between where a bus or rail line ends and a rider’s actual

destination, has long been a challenge that has limited public transit’s usefulness to our residents and those who work in Alpharetta. This on-demand shuttle service may be the solution to that problem.”

The MARTA Reach program debuted March 1 as a six-month pilot program to test how on-demand shuttles can improve MARTA’s service. It initially launched in west Atlanta, Belvedere and the Gillem Logistics Center.

Interested customers can download the MARTA Reach app for their smartphone. The app will guide riders to designated pick-up and drop-off stops.

Customers can also request additional stop locations in the app if there is not a designated stop where they would like.

Riders without a smartphone can call MARTA customer service at 404848-5000 to request a ride. All MARTA Reach vehicles are wheelchair and stroller accessible.

Friends of Bulloch to host 37th Magnolia Ball fundraiser

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Atlanta Country Club will host Friends of Bulloch’s 37th Magnolia Ball on May 21, with honorary chairs Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson and First Lady Stacey Wilson.

The Magnolia Ball, which starts at 6 p.m., is the primary fundraiser for the preservation and restoration of Bulloch Hall, the home of Mittie Bulloch, mother of the 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt.

Bulloch Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as a wildlife preserve.

Friends of Bulloch, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, states its commitment this year is the pressing need for repair and preservation of the house and grounds as

well as the completion of the Blacksmith Shop and the pergola entrance to Orchard Hill.

Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, fine dining, dancing to the music of the Fly Betty Band, auctions and shopping.

Additionally, the evening will highlight the Greek Revival architecture of Bulloch Hall.

The historic house was built under the guidance of Willis Ball, a skilled builder from Connecticut. Heart Pine was used in its construction. Four Tuscan columns 21 feet tall grace the pedimented or triangular gable forming the roof over the portico or porch. It revived a style of architecture used in the ancient Greek temples.

Scratch closes in Milton after 12 years in business

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — All mother-daughter team Kelley and Samantha Hughes wanted when they opened Scratch Fresh in Milton more than a decade ago was for their customers to feel comfortable and at home.

So, on May 1, when they saw their little breakfast and lunch restaurant fill up one last time with loyal customers, Samantha said she was reminded they had accomplished their goal and more.

“We just wanted everybody to feel that they could come in and not have to worry about whatever was outside of those doors,” Samantha said. “And that’s kind of what we stuck with. We started making lots and lots of friends.

As our customer base grew, they became more than just customers. They became our very close friends, and we’re still very close to them to this day.”

Samantha said they made the tough decision to close Scratch after struggling for several months to keep up with rising food costs and staffing shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Another factor, Samantha said, was her father, Toby’s, declining health.

“It was time for us to, unfortunately, close it, so we could be with him,” Samantha said in a phone interview on May 4.

Kelley and Samantha bought Scratch in January 2011. Samantha said her parents moved to the area in the late 1980s and both she and her sister grew up in a house just off Mayfield Road in Alpharetta. Her dad, a master plumber, already had a large customer base from years of working in the community when they decided to go into the restaurant business.

“Alpharetta started getting bigger and bigger, and we gained a bigger following and more friends,” Samantha said. “So, we just grew organically. It wasn’t something that we had planned on. It being that we didn’t realize, honestly, how big of a community impact we and Scratch had until this final week. The community really came out and showed us a lot of support.”

Scratch’s customers, including City of Milton and City of Alpharetta first responders, showed up in droves May 1 to bid the Hughes farewell.

One customer, Tom George, had been going to Scratch for more than 11 years.

Samantha said he and his wife are like family.

“The Milton/Alpharetta community lost an iconic presence,” George stated in a letter to the Herald. “It is an awful

shame. … I started out as ‘Grumpy Tom’ but grew out of it. My wife Kim and I can legitimately count the entire Hughes family and their staff, notably Leah Gatti and Jazmine Shah, as close personal friends. Heck, Leah even made the trek to D.C. to attend our wedding! They are all way more than simply people that served us food.”

George stated he enjoyed Scratch because of its “country feel,” complete with a sign above the registers with the words, “I love you more than biscuits and gravy.” He recalls that when it opened, Scratch started out as a burgers, biscuits and shakes place in the Windward Way shopping strip across from Walmart and soon evolved into a full menu breakfast and lunch, made-toorder restaurant.

His personal favorite, George stated, was Kelley’s pot roast sandwich.

“In the early years, Scratch had this endearing way of delivering your food,” George stated. “When the order was ready, they would shout your name out to the restaurant and deliver it to the raised hand. As I said, everybody knew your name, literally.”

George stated customers could barely get through the doors on the Saturday and Sunday before the restaurant closed.

“It is clear they knew they were losing something special,” George stated. “I know that to be true. ...

The following 11 years has seen tumultuous personal change. … And now, I have lost my favorite haunt.

I feel that pain with a great sense of personal loss. … Taped on the front door is an open letter from Kelley and Sam. It thanks us for ‘12 years of love and support from our community and customers.’ Right back at you ladies.

Samantha said she was flabbergasted to see just how much people cared about them and their business.

“It’s easy to get stuck in the day in and day out of things, and sometimes you forget why you started,” Samantha said. “But Kelley and I were quickly reminded this past week of why we’ve done what we’ve done and that’s strictly because of the friendships that we have made.”

Moving forward, Samantha said they’re letting God take the wheel and lead them where they need to go. While they have no plans at the moment, Samantha said she and Kelley hope to take a couple of vacations with their families, as they have taken about three in the past 12 years.

“Right now, we’re just focusing on our family and what comes next is in God’s hands,” Samantha said.

North Fulton cities approved for infrastructure funds ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta, Milton and Roswell are set to receive $200,000 each to use at their discretion for infrastructure improvements.

The North Fulton Community Improvement District announced that on May 3 its board approved a total of $800,000 for the North Fulton cities and Fulton County as a local match for the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The bill, passed by congress in the fall of 2021, sets aside $1 trillion for infrastructure improvements across the country. Nearly half of the funds will be allocated to federal highway, bridge and public transportation improvements, according to the North Fulton CID. It also gives local entities the opportunity to apply for grants to implement infrastructure projects from

roads and bridges to broadband.

CID Chairman Kerry Armstrong said community improvement districts are “perfectly positioned” to help local communities access these funds.

“We are helping our partners expedite important projects and creating an opportunity for our communities to bring these funds to North Fulton,” Armstrong said.

In Alpharetta, Mayor Jim Gilvin said the city is “extremely grateful” for its partnership with the North Fulton CID. “We are excited for the opportunity to benefit from this important funding and feel we are better equipped to apply thanks to the action taken by the North Fulton CID,” Gilvin said.

Kemp signs ‘Gift of Life Act’ promoting organ donations

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Gov. Brian Kemp has signed into law a bill known as the “Giving the Gift of Life Act,” or House Bill 275, inspired by State Sen. John Albers who donated a kidney to his son last summer.

The bill was signed May 2 and accomplishes two main goals.

It prevents life insurance companies from canceling or denying coverage to someone who donates all or part of their kidney, liver, pancreas, intestine, lung or bone marrow, and it increases a tax credit from $10,000 up to $25,000 to cover a donor’s lost wages and other impacts.

After signing the legislation, Albers thanked Kemp for giving more Georgians “access to life-saving organ donations.”

“Many families in Georgia have experienced the difficult decision to either donate potentially life-saving organs or risk losing their insurance coverage,” Albers said. “After serving as a living donor to my son last year, I saw this struggle first-hand and was committed to finding a solution to ensure

no potential donor would be unfairly penalized for their life-saving act.”

In 2020, John’s son, Will Albers, was 24 years old and could not drive more than 10 to 15 minutes without having to pull over and take a nap.

John said his son had lost a lot of weight, experienced a lot of cramps and pains and could not keep food down. Then, one night, Will drove a short distance to his parents’ house, where his mom, Kari Albers, insisted he go to the emergency room after she noticed he had started vomiting blood.

Will was admitted to the intensive care unit that same night.

John said they immediately started the process of getting Will on the national organ transplant list, but despite being well-educated and wellconnected, they found it quite difficult. It wasn’t until three weeks later, after John found out he was a match, that he and Will underwent surgery at Emory University.

Since then, John said he has made it his mission to try to help others in similar situations.

Milton teen murder suspects appear for online court hearing

By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ATLANTA — Two former Milton High School athletes accused of murdering an Alpharetta man in October appeared via Zoom for a case management hearing in Fulton County Superior Court on April 27.

Cameron Walker, 17, and Jonathan Murray, 18, both of Roswell, face three counts of felony murder, murder, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal attempt to purchase marijuana and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Both were denied bond in March.

Adam Abbate, with the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, told Judge Shukura Ingram he is still awaiting the medical examiner’s autopsy report and on the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for the crime lab report for firearms, but he expects to receive both in the next 60 days.

“I believe most of the discovery has been served…,” Abbate said. “We’re still waiting to receive the final report from the medical examiner’s office, but I know the photographs have been turned over. The report is just taking longer than usual.”

Arrest warrants obtained by the Herald state Walker and Murray attempted to rob and ultimately shot 24-year-old Connor Mediate, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds on the night of Oct. 14 at the Collingwood Apartments in Alpharetta.

2. Sometimes it takes more courage and intelligence to be silent than to speak. It took me a long time to understand and respect silence. I’m still learning that it’s a mark of maturity and, most of the time, intelligence. Also, respect everyone’s differences and challenge yourself to learn about them.

3. Never stop learning. I don’t mean that in a teacher way, I mean it in a learning life sort of way. You are constantly growing, maturing, and developing, so enjoy it. Life is a condition to which no one is immune. We learn something every day. Our taste in music, food, TV, and the people we surround ourselves with evolves. It’s natural for these preferences to change. I wasted a lot of time trying to be someone I wasn’t because I thought I was supposed to be someone else. To complete number three, you need to invest in number four…

4. Spend time with yourself. Since you’ve been in my class, I’ve learned how amazing you are, each in your own way. If you sit and spend time with you, I think you’ll feel the same way. I’m such a people person, but sometimes the best thing is time alone with great music, a book, TV, or whatever.

As cheesy as this sounds, be your own best friend. The sooner you learn that all of your faults and idiosyncrasies are what make you awesome, the sooner you will be a better person and enjoy life so much more. That leads to number five…

5. Everyone has faults. With the advent of social media, I sometimes find myself comparing my faults with everyone else’s highlights. Scrolling through your Twitter feed (or Snapchat or TikTok), you see people lauding their accomplishments, great times, and great friends. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this, as long as you understand that what you see on social media is an incomplete picture. If you compare all of your faults to those highlights, you may feel a bit inadequate. Everyone has faults, so embrace yours. Grow from them and know that they add to what makes you you. And remember, you’re awesome.

6. Surround yourself with people who love you and think you’re great (but also who know and accept your faults). You need this. If someone won’t accept you for who you are, ask yourself if you really need that relationship (be it friends or more).

7. Smile. Every day. I’m not getting into the psychology of it all, but it could possibly make you happier and healthier. It works. Trust me.

8. Don’t trust people just because they say, “trust me.” Still...

9. Trust people. It’s endearing. I know this is very contradictory, but it’s true. Even though “trust me” should raise flags, trusting people means you are human and we all need people we can trust.

10. I’ve saved one of the most important tips for last: Be happy. Genuinely happy. Choose a profession that pays the bills and makes you want to go to work most days. You won’t be happy every day. You will have bad days, weeks and maybe even months, but you’ll be generally happy. Money will not, in the end, make you happy.

One of the greatest pieces of advice my Dad ever gave me was to make great memories. Good and bad, and all kinds in between, they are all part of our life.

So make them good ones and remember that you are part of other’s memories so make sure they are positive, too.

I have to end this the way my mother ended most of our conversations when I was in high school and college. Make good choices. (I repeat this often to my own kids.)

Kimberly Ann Rye

The family of Kimberly Ann Rye, 60, sadly announces that following a brief but serious illness she passed away peacefully Friday, May 1, 2022 at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Alpharetta, GA. She had resided in Alpharetta from 2007 until the time of her death.

Kim was born September 28, 1961 to Georgianne Smith and Bernard Rye in Willoughby, OH, grew up there and graduated from South High School in 1979. She went on to graduate from Allegheny College in 1983 with a BA in Political Science/History, receive a Juris Doctor from The Ohio State College of Law in 1987, and an AS from Columbus State Community College in 1996 specializing in Interpreting/ Transliterating Technology.

Kim was preceded in death by her

devoted father, Bernard Rye and two aunts, Dolores (Rye) Zonarich and Barbara (Smith) Wolski.

Surviving to cherish Kim’s memory: her mother, Georgianne Smith, brother, Jeffrey Rye (Kelley); Aunt, Marcela Blout (Frank); Uncle, Forrest Smith (Maureen); Uncle Frank Zonarich. Cousins, James Smith (Kim); Margaret Flynn (Aaron); Alyssa Rae Younger (Kyle); Stephen Zonarich.

Also mourning Kim’s loss are Alpharetta friends, Donna, Jeff, Todd, Jason, and Dave also acknowledging Jennifer, Doug, Kathy, John, Kay, and Caroline among others.

Kim was so fortunate to have had all of you in her life. Words cannot express how eternally grateful Jeff and I will always be for your loyalty.

Everyone should have one or more hobbies.

Mine are gardening and music. I once liked to watch baseball games on TV before billboards started popping up behind home plate PAT FOX with every windup – Managing Editor it gives new meaning pat@appenmedia.com to the term “pitch.”

Another hobby is keeping a list of great writing. When I read something that shows a real talent – a turn of phrase, a clever literary device – I make note of it.

It’s my own list, and no one has to agree with it. I am not on the list.

I could tell you that the most glamorous literary paragraph written over the past century is on Page 82 of “Babbitt,” by Sinclair Lewis, or that Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning” is the most impactful book written over the same period.

The saddest lament – among the many great ones written – comes from Mingo war chief James Logan, whose entire family was killed in the 1774 Yellow Creek Massacre, and mourned, “There runs not a drop of my blood in the veins of any living creature.”

While few among us could match this level of virtuosity, it still saddens me that few people try. Websites and even newspapers are awash in sloppy writing.

The noted poetry critic John Ciardi once opined that everyone is a poet.

Your thoughts, your inspirations are as profound as anyone’s.

The difference between the average clod like me and, say, Lord Byron is that the bard had the skill to translate his thoughts onto paper. That takes work, Ciardi said… “more than the

excitation of one’s own ignorance.”

What I’m talking about here are writers who, bless their hearts, are serious about making a point without sharpening their pencils.

I can spell reasonably well. And, I have a better-than-average understanding of grammar and punctuation.

That’s a low bar for a writer.

Unless you’re Virginia Woolf or William Faulkner, most sentences should have a subject and a predicate. Nothing fancy, just a noun and a verb.

“Jesus wept.”

See? Easy.

I don’t want to single anyone out for special treatment here, but I find today’s online sportswriters the most profligate with the written word and most corrupt at journalism in general.

I’ve been privileged to have worked in the same newsroom with some of the best sports writers in the country – Furman Bisher, Jack Wilkinson, Steve Hummer, to name a few. Their writing had power and prose. It always looked easy, but I know it wasn’t.

My complaint is more with those behind sports news websites.

Here are some observations about this new crop of sportswriters cluttering these sites: • Every sports story must include the word “arguably.”

• Most sports websites do not report sports. They report what a sports figure says about something, usually some trash talk. Most times, the story has been stolen from a post-game interview conducted by a legitimate sports reporter.

• Some sites employ the “double steal,” the practice of republishing remarks from Twitter about remarks stolen from the post-game interview.

• Most online sports writers love

More astounding still is the number of online sports sites that enlist a team of high school interns to comb social media sites to rehash what has already been reported by legitimate news services.

Back in the old days, we used to call this plagiarism. It was looked down upon.

Years ago, I worked for a small daily newspaper in the Midwest. We had some 10 reporters and four photographers.

The paper didn’t make a lot of money, so our work was important to us. We were proud of covering local and regional news for our subscribers.

Every day, the news director of a local radio station spent his noon broadcast reading our stories verbatim over the airwaves. We asked him repeatedly to stop doing it, maybe preserve the crease in his pants and go do his own reporting. He seldom did.

He was lazy.

It seems to be catching.

Sandra Kahn Hearn

Mother peacefully met Jesus on the afternoon of April 7, 2022, with family by her side.

Sandra Kahn Hearn was born February 11, 1937, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Ada Estelle Johnson Kahn and Carroll Kahn and was raised in Palm Beach, Florida. Having terrible asthma, doctors urged my grandparents to move to Florida, where the air would be better for her lungs. They made Palm Beach home. Mother grew up in a wonderful time in Florida on 30th and 34th Streets.

Summers were spent visiting aunts, uncles and cousins in Portsmouth, Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina with my grandmother, the youngest of 10.

A graduate of Palm Beach High School, she was active in intramurals, GAA, Girls Choir, Royal Palm Staff, Frond Staff, Hi-Notes, Allied Youth, Press Club, was a Sophomore Superlative and apparently, in her Senior yearbook, she “left Tony and Abner all the fun on the Hill.” In reading her Palm Beach High School friends’ entries, I had to laugh as the Hill was mentioned quite often. I hope they are all having a good time on that Hill.

Between school and her active membership in First Baptist Church of Palm Beach, mother had a tight friend group, which included the late Burt “Buddy” Reynolds, and she stayed in touch with all of them through the years.

Later she moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida, with friend Collette Gurney Hurst and pursued a career with General Electric, which was contracted at the time by NASA, where she met the love of her life, my father, Harold “H.C.” Clyde Hearn III, who was responsible for scheduling the launches. They married on November 24, 1967, at First United Methodist Church of Cocoa Beach. Later in 1969, I was born, and Dad, an aeronautical engineer with a master’s in business, decided to make a change; they moved to Delray Beach so that dad could pursue a career with Merrill Lynch. Mother stayed home to raise me and manage the household, and boy could she manage. She was very talented in many ways and always had her hands busy. She could sew clothes, crochet, paint, make Christmas ornaments, bake, cook, entertain and create the most beautiful tablescapes. In fact, the Biltmore wanted to hire her as their event decorator, but she turned them down. She made the best brownies, a mean Rusty Nail

or scotch and water, without the water, and my favorite spaghetti sauce, of which she would never share the recipe. Mother sometimes would not say I love you, yet told the grandchildren “Isle of View” and had them say it three times fast.

Life in Delray Beach was wonderful, and she made the most remarkable friend group with my father. They were part of the Jublieers, formed a travel group called the White Feathers and were social members of the Ocean Club of Florida. Through the years, they traveled with friends, entertained, went to parties, volunteered and were very generous in so many ways.

Every weekend was filled with the true treasure of friendship, and I am grateful to have witnessed it all. Never one to turn down an invitation or a dinner out, Mother could sometimes be seen running into a favorite restaurant kitchen and grabbing her waiter to dance. There may have been stories of jumping in pools, high heels and all!

Mother was a dutiful mother and grandmother. She was always impeccably dressed for the day and the occasion. She was extremely generous, talented and on the stubborn side. She made friends with all types of people. My childhood friends loved her. One described her as classy and sassy—spot on.

Mother asked Jesus every day to take her after dad died, and he finally did 10 years later with family by her side. She is survived

by Abbe Carroll Hearn Laboda, daughter; Steve Laboda, son-inlaw; two grandchildren Morgan Delaney Laboda and Lauren Bailey Laboda; step-daughter Kristin Hearn Levi; step-grandson Nick Levi; cousins Bonnie Broughton, Cindy Broughton and Kendall Broughton.

Mother left me with directions: no service, just a party and spread her ashes in the Atlantic Ocean off Palm Beach just as my father was done. Her chosen songs are “No Man is an Island,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “I’ll Walk with God” and “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”

A luncheon in her honor will be held at 12 p.m., May 6, 2022, at Delray Dunes Golf and Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Crabapple Knoll Veterinarian Stray Program.

The first, best step in making America great again I always thought the idea was puzzling. America is still great. I don’t recall that we ever ceased to be great.

I remember reading something a while ago that really does speak to this. It said RAY APPEN that if we decided to Publisher Emeritus allow anyone in the ray@appenmediagroup.com world to immigrate to this country who wanted to, half the world would move in next week. And they would.

Anyone know another country that would compare?

One of the things that makes this country great, possibly more than anything else, is our values – individual rights, freedom, equal opportunity, honor, integrity, honesty, and especially the rule of law. These values are at the core of who we are today, and, most importantly, they will determine our future.

As important as these values and ideals are, there is one thing that is and historically has been even more important – our willingness to defend them.

Time and again, we have been willing to defend them, to fight for them on battlefields from Normandy to the jungles of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama, and on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in front of a quarter

They are not free. We have defended them for over 200 years with our blood, our lives, our honor.

Today, however, we seem to have lost our way. We’re still great, but we have stumbled. Our country has been torn apart. We have forgotten who we are. We seem to have abandoned most of our values.

Why? I can’t write about “why” now, here, because there are so many reasons we have collectively stumbled. But, I will point a broad-brush finger at three, and they are all related and generally get back to money: unlimited PAC money (Citizens United) pouring into our political “system;” unregulated social media and internet spreading toxic and frequently false information on a massive scale; and the geometrically increasing concentration of wealth in this country – basically turning control of the country to a bunch of billionaires, most of whom don’t know any better than you or I about what is right, wrong, or good or bad, but whose opinions and desires now are weighted a thousand times more than my opinion or yours.

So how do we fix it?

One step you can take now. I believe 1,000 percent we fix it by each of us individually consistently taking tiny

steps in the direction of restoring and reprioritizing our core values. That is, we all have a choice to be part of the solution or part of the problem. And we’re lucky to still have this choice.

Much of the rest of the world does not.

Fixing our country is all about values. Our actions need to support the values we believe in.

Voting is one of our tools that allow us to communicate – and demand – which values our electors must prioritize.

Here is why and how: Brad Raffensperger.

Please consider that voting for the next Georgia Secretary of State is not a Democrat, Republican or Libertarian issue. It is a “value” issue, and our values in this instance should be independent of party.

In the last election and against overwhelming pressure from his own president and his own party, and with almost no support from his peers, Raffensperger defended truth and the facts. He stood his ground for you, for me, for every American. He defended the rule of law and the veracity of our election system that ain’t broken – because it was the right thing to do.

We all know – at least in private – that there was no significant election fraud. The unlimited money spent and the scores of investigations would have found it if it existed. It didn’t.

Each and every one of us know that.

Brad Raffensperger had everything

politically and personally to gain by caving into the pressure and prostituting our law, but he didn’t. He stood his ground, something that almost no other fellow elected official had the guts or spine to do. They are cowards.

Raffensperger is an American hero. He is the type of guy that in combat, you want covering your back.

Right now, every voter in Georgia has a huge, very specific opportunity to slap down the clowns – those who have abandoned the values we hold sacred – and fire a broadside warning to them by reelecting Mr. Raffensperger.

If we don’t support him, what message would that send to the elite entrenched, self-serving politicians in office who don’t honor the same values that we honor? Keep doing what you do? Keep trashing our Democracy?

Don’t do the right thing if there is any risk to your own status or personal agenda? Keep hiding behind your wall of silence, and don’t stand up for what is right?

We need more – many more – elected officials with the integrity, backbone and honor like Raffensperger. This election is our chance to communicate to all parties that we will be taking control back and the deadwood will no longer be tolerated.

This is our time; seize it for all our sake.

Thank you Brad Raffensperger for doing the right thing – for us all.

driving exhibitions; • Taylor Levey, 20, of Roswell – city ordinance – non-driver participation in street racing and/or reckless driving exhibitions; • Osman Yildirim, 18, of Marietta – city ordinance – non-driver participation in street racing and/or reckless driving exhibitions; • Juvenile female, 17, of Alpharetta – city ordinance – non-driver participation in street racing and/or reckless driving exhibitions; • Kevin Valencia, 19, of Smyrna – city ordinance – non-driver participation in street racing and/or reckless driving exhibitions; • Mario Ruiz, 18, of Buford – city ordinance – non-driver participation in street racing and/or reckless driving exhibitions; • Ericka Rodriguez-Caba, 22, of Sugar Hill – city ordinance – non-driver participation in street racing and/or reckless driving exhibitions;

Roswell Police Chief James Conroy said the arrests send a clear message that “reckless and stunt driving in our cities won’t be tolerated.”

“RPD has gathered a wealth of video and photographic evidence, both from our own investigator’s diligent work and the public, all of which we’ve shared with our neighboring jurisdictions for additional charges where applicable,” Conroy said.
