ROSWELL, Ga. — A man attempting to buy flowers for his girlfriend became the victim of fraud when he unknowingly made a purchase from a closed business that processed his payment.

The man said he attempted to buy the flowers through Roswell Garden Flower’s website. He picked out the flowers and submitted a payment of $80. When he went to retrieve the

flowers at the shop’s listed address, he was informed by the new business owner that Roswell Garden Flowers is no longer in operation.

Police spoke with the owner of the new business who stated the previous owner of the flower shop still accepts payments on a regular basis though the shop is no longer operating.

Woman loses package to front porch thief

Insulin supply stolen from charity volunteer

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman reported the theft of a delivery package from her doorstep on Carybell Lane Dec. 15.

The woman said that her daughterin-law had shipped her a package and had texted her earlier that evening that she had been notified the package had been delivered. But when the woman went to retrieve the package, she found nothing on the doorstep.

The woman told police she had been home at the time of the delivery but had heard nothing. The home was not equipped with a doorbell camera.

The value of the missing items was placed at about $45.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A Roswell man lost his wallet, his credit cards and his supply of insulin to a thief while working at a charity event on North Point Circle Dec. 14.

Police said the victim stated that while working the event he had placed his tan bag containing the items on a chair early that afternoon. When he returned about an hour later, someone had taken it. The man, who is insulin dependent, said the bag contained two insulin shots worth $250 and his wallet which contained his driver’s license and credit cards.

Wanted man arrested at park after curfew ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A Milton man, wanted on a warrant out of Troop County, was arrested after police noticed him pacing near his parked vehicle at North Park shortly before midnight Dec. 15.

North Park is generally not open to the public after dark.

Police reported they could smell a strong odor of marijuana as they approached the man. The man denied he

Worker loses iPhone while on lunch break ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police responded to a report of the theft of a cell phone Dec. 14 at the Moe’s Southwest Grill on Old Milton Parkway.

An employee at the restaurant notified police that in the early afternoon he walked next door on break, then returned to work to eat a meal when he noticed his iPhone 10 was missing. He searched the restaurant and the business next door cut could not locate the device, which was valued at $400.

When co-workers called the number, the phone rang. The employee said he’d forgotten the password to activate the location app for the device.

He told police he would notify them if he located the password so it might help with the investigation.

Tennis rackets stolen from man’s vehicle ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A Cumming man called police Dec. 13 to report he had located three tennis rackets that had been stolen from his car the day before on display at a local sporting goods store.

The man told police that the rackets, along with $100 in cash, keys and a phone charger, had been removed from his car Dec. 12 at the Park and Ride on Mansell Road.

The man said he had paid a $75 deposit on the rackets, which were valued at about $250 each. The man said he later checked with Play It Again Sports on Mansell Road and was told the store had purchased three rackets of similar make on the afternoon of Dec. 12. He said he then visited the store and identified the three rackets as those stolen from his car.

The store promptly returned the rackets to the owner.

Alpharetta has much to look forward to in 2020 Those of us fortunate enough to call Alpharetta home can look back on 2019 as another wonderful year for our city. And as we look ahead to 2020, we have every reason to hope the new year we will be Jim Gilvin even better.

It is a place where friends and neighbors come together to share life and music over exceptional food and drinks. A place where people live, shop and work in a friendly, safe environment with something for everyone.

And as your local government, we will continue to make downtown even better. But it won’t stop there.

The year ahead promises wonderful improvements to Alpharetta’s park and transportation systems, too. Soon the first leg of the AlphaLoop will be

completed between City Hall and Avalon along Thompson Street. Then our award-winning Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department will continue their great work with other projects throughout the city.

This spring, we are looking forward to unveiling our first indoor facility on the east side of Ga. 400. In partnership with the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta YMCA we will open a wonderful space at their current location on Northpoint Parkway. Residents will have a place to enjoy events, meetings and innovative programs right there along the Greenway.

And speaking of the Alpharetta Greenway, 2020 will be the year we finally begin construction of the section between the northernmost point along Windward Parkway and the southernmost point of Forsyth County’s greenway on McGinnis Ferry Road. Once completed, residents of both counties will be able to enjoy a beautiful trail totaling 20 miles in length.

Roswell looks to 2020 for improved quality of life As Roswell’s mayor, I am excited and proud to serve our community on a daily basis. Roswell is a vibrant, diverse city that is thriving. We are moving forward and 2020 is going to be another Lori Henry great year for us.

Roswell mayor mayorhenry@roswellgov.com We have made great strides in just the last year to improve our transportation system and connectivity throughout our whole community. Easing traffic congestion and improving our cross-city connections are two of my transportation priorities. We have a number of major transportation projects that are going to transform traveling through and across Roswell.

The City of Roswell is partnering with GDOT on a new interchange at Holcomb Bridge Road and Ga. 400.

This new interchange is a once-in-ageneration opportunity and will be a transformational project for Roswell.

In addition to the new interchange, GDOT will be constructing a bridge

over Ga. 400, south of Holcomb Bridge Road as part of their express lanes project. This will be another way residents can travel east and west over 400 without using the Holcomb Bridge Road interchange.

And of course, the City of Roswell will be building Big Creek Parkway, a bridge over 400, connecting east and west Roswell north of Holcomb Bridge Road.

These three projects together will make commuting and traveling east and west easier and more convenient for our residents, dispersing and improving local traffic patterns. These projects will also present opportunities for this area of Roswell My administration is diligently reaching out and working productively with our counterparts across the region and the state for the benefit of Roswell’s residents. The collaboration with GDOT on all of these major projects is one example and a testament to the City of Roswell’s professional approach to our working relationships.

It’s something I am proud of and it’s a win for both Roswell and the state.

new park space at the old soccer park on Windward Parkway. The new park will have restroom facilities, walking trails and playground space for families to enjoy. Other improvements will continue at parks throughout the city including Wills Park, Mayfield Road and the Old Farm Park on Old Rucker Road.

And while the city focuses on improving access to parks and trails, we will also continue to work on much-needed transportation improvements. The final touches on the Rucker Road project should be completed by spring, and that should give way to muchneeded work on other corridors. We hope to complete the additional northbound left turn lane at Ga. 400 and Windward Parkway and expect to begin work on the much-needed additional east bound lane on the south side of Kimball Bridge

between Northpoint Parkway and Waters Road.

In addition, the City of Alpharetta will continue working closely with the Department of Transportation on details of the upcoming Ga. 400 toll lane project and its impact to our local roads and existing bridges. There may be opportunities to improve east/west traffic in our city by replacing the two-lane bridges on Kimball Bridge and Webb Bridge Road over Ga. 400 with four-lane bridges as part of the state project. We will also continue working on congestion relief projects being designed for McGinnis Ferry Road, Haynes Bridge Road and several other corridors.

Yes, 2020 promises to be another great year of progress in Alpharetta. We thank you for your tremendous support and we look forward to another banner year.

Continued property tax relief heads list of priorities for 2020 As 2019 comes to an end, I’m pleased to have the opportunity to reflect on a few of Fulton County’s accomplishments during the past year. There is plenty to be proud of, and I look forward to continuing our moBob Ellis Fulton County Commissioner, District 2 mentum throughout the coming year.

Property taxes are an area that affects virtually all Fulton County residents, and I was very pleased that the Board of Commissioners voted to reduce the millage rate for the fourth year in a row. Residents also saw significant tax relief through a cap on property tax increases implemented in 2019. Also, our senior citizens realized additional tax reductions with the expansion of their homestead exemptions.

These changes helped keep the increase in tax bills in check and ease the impact of skyrocketing assessments that reflected improvements in our nation’s economy. Lastly, we resolved property tax litigation with the State Department of Revenue in the favor of Fulton taxpayers.

Efforts to identify additional opportunities for property tax relief will continue

in 2020. Among other things, the county will work with the state Legislature to simplify and improve the homestead exemption and appeals process. Plans are also in place to expand educational programs and materials to help property owners better understand the process and protect their homeowner rights. As always, be assured that I will continually strive to keep more money in the pockets of Fulton County taxpayers.

I believe excellence in customer service is a key component in building citizens’ trust in government. During the past two years, we have expended significant efforts in this area and have made great strides with those initiatives. To date, more than 1,000 front-line employees have received comprehensive training, and we expect the satisfaction rate from citizens will continue to increase.

To consolidate and improve health services in North Fulton, the county recently purchased a spacious facility on North Point Parkway in Alpharetta. When opened in late 2020, the new center will offer convenient, one-stop shopping for those seeking access to health, behavioral health, developmental disabilities, primary care and social services.

Schools want to work with parents to strike the right kind of ‘balance’ As I look forward to the next year, the word that comes to mind is “balance.”

My three millennial children speak often of the importance of work/life balance as it relates to job choice.

They are not Katie reeves alone; it is a Disitrict 2, Fulton County Board of Education common theme among this generation.

Balance is something we all strive to achieve, including those of us in education. Here in Fulton, like many districts, we are working to find the right balance of accountability and reduced testing. Most agree that the testing has gotten out of control, mostly from federal and state mandates. Indeed, our board has advocated at the state and national level to address that issue. At the same time, our excellent schools are what drew many to this area to raise their families. We can’t abandon common sense accountability. It is particularly important in a world where comparisons

with other world class districts is not only important — it’s expected.

We also struggle to find the right balance in our curriculum. Our graduates are expected to demonstrate that they have the right critical thinking skills to problem-solve for the next generation.

But just as you can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, strong foundational skills mastered at the elementary level allow our students to reach their full potential in middle school and high school.

Speaking of curriculum, parents and students alike have probably noticed our board’s emphasis on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).

One cannot ignore the signs of a community in distress. Suicides and addiction problems have shaped our conversations. As we seek answers and solutions, we must again remember the importance of balance. As an educational institution, while we want to provide the resources necessary to weather challenges related to SEL issues, we must also remember

Fulton Schools is well-prepared to face challenges that lie ahead There is nothing like the groundbreaking of a new building to put one in mind of the future and expectations of what is to come. Recently, construction ceremonies held for both the new CraKATHA STUART bapple Middle School Disitrict 1, Fulton County and the Innovation Board of Education Academy helped set the stage for Fulton County Schools in 2020. The new middle school, set to open in the fall of 2021, is a welcome addition to our community and an exciting place for learning. Additionally, parents across Fulton County should look into the unique opportunities the new STEM focused school will provide. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2020 for the Innovation Academy, and the stateof-the-art building in Alpharetta will open that fall as a professional development facility until the first class begins in 2021.

The prospects for Fulton County

Schools in 2020 are bright. The new year will be exciting; however, this time of year also reminds us all of family and community. Sadly, as we come to the anniversary of the tragic loss of one of our Roswell students from suicide, we are also reminded the holidays can be a trial for many families and it is important to support one another.

Fortunately, in our community we have a strong network of organizations that work collaboratively with our schools to address many of the social and emotional needs of our students and provide a wide range of services. With Community Collaboration as one of the tents of our Strategic Plan, we are proud to partner with North Fulton Community Charities, STAR House, Summit Counseling, United Way, the Rotary Club of Roswell, and other organizations to provide a variety of services to families and students.

As a society, we must also focus on at-risk families and students. Early childhood education is a priority for getting

Alpharetta City Council approves New state laws North Point tax allocation district boost education

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The City of Alpharetta has taken a leap of faith for the future of its once vibrant North Point Corridor.

In one of its last acts of 2019, the City Council voted unanimously to approve formation of a tax allocation district in an effort to revitalize the area.

A tax allocation district, or TAD, is not a new tax. But it does allow a portion of future property taxes generated within a certain area to be set aside and used for improvements like sidewalks and parks within that area. First adopted by the Georgia Legislature in 1985, Metro Atlanta today has more than two dozen tax allocation districts — most notably Atlantic Station.

The TAD, which covers almost 4 million square feet of commercial property in the North Point Corridor, would set aside any future increases in tax revenue it generates into a special fund that would be used solely for capital improvements in that area.

Estimates compiled for the city

by Bleakly Advisory Group show the district could receive anywhere from $65-$88 million in funding for these improvements over 25 years if the county and school district consent to be a part of the plan.

Right now, the area within the district generates over $1 billion in retail sales and pays out more than $10 million in property taxes to the city, county and school district annually, said Gary Mongeon, senior vice president with Bleakly.

“It’s an extremely important revenue generator for the entire region,” Mongeon said.

If the area maintains its current value, all taxing jurisdictions would still receive their current share of property taxes. If the properties grow in value, that extra property tax revenue would go into the separate TAD account for capital improvements.

In order to reap the full benefits of the TAD, the city will now have to convince officials with Fulton County and Fulton Schools to sign on. Without their cooperation, the TAD’s revenues would decrease dramatically.

Mayor Jim Gilvin said he hopes the county and school district will come on board because property values in that area are declining and may continue down without some major initiatives. If that happens, he said, both the county and school district will be hurt.

“As a revenue producer, Fulton County School System and Fulton County and other municipalities receive the vast majority of any of the revenues, whether it’s sales tax or property tax,” Gilvin said.

Future development, guided with input and tax dollars from the city, county and school district would have the potential to reverse the downward trend of property values in the area, city officials said.

“I’m glad we’re finally being honest about the current situation at North Point,” Councilman Jason Binder said.

“It’s going through hard times, much like the retail area in general across the nation. It is a city issue, a North Fulton issue, a county issue, a state issue …

This is the best tool, where we can all come together and help stop that as much as possible.”

Back in April, the governor signed 21 bills into law that went into effect July 1. Those new laws covered issues from human trafficking to flag displays.

The latest series of new laws run the gamut from expanding deductions for college savings plans to narrowing the criteria for those placed on the child abuse registry.

Here’s a rundown of some of the new laws that went into effect Jan. 1: HB 166 establishes licensing requirements for genetic counselors. The law mandates continuing education for these professionals who create treatment plans for individuals or families affected

by or at risk of genetic disorders.

HB 478 sets stricter requirements to list someone on the state’s child abuse registry. Abusers can now only be listed if they are 18 years old. Formerly, those as young as 13 could be listed. The process for having a review hearing before being added to the list or having a name expunged has also been updated.

HB 266 doubles the tax-deductible contribution you can make to a 529 savings plan from $2,000 to $4,000 per child if you’re a single taxpayer and from $4,000 to $8,000 per year if you file jointly with a spouse.

HB 182 requires remote sellers and online retailers to collect and submit state and local sales taxes if they exceed $100,000 in Georgia gross revenue.

Studies estimate the state could realize up to $3.9 million in annual tax revenue from the new law.

HB 63 provides doctors a way around what is commonly referred to as “step therapy,” a protocol contained in health insurance plans that requires physicians to try certain preferred medications first and have those drugs fail before moving on to a medication that might be more suitable for the condition. The law now gives doctors a way to apply for exceptions to avoid step therapy and quickly start patients on the medication they recommend.

HB 288 establishes flat, predictable and in most cases higher fees that clerks of the superior courts are entitled to charge for filing documents and instruments pertaining to real estate or personal property. It also provides for a flat sum structure, a repeal of certain related alternative fees and a repeal or provisions related to additional fees and costs in counties having a certain sized population.

HB 507 revises the criteria used by tax assessors to determine the fair market value of real property. Tax assessors now shall apply the existing zoning, use, covenants or restrictions, bank sales, and rent limitations in determining the fair market value.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Beginning Jan. 2, visitors to downtown Roswell will find some prime parking spaces opening up a little faster.

Several on-street parking spaces on Elizabeth Way and along a por tion of Canton Street are being converted to paid parking spaces.

The city has installed new signs and equipment to alert visitors that the street spaces carry a charge for longterm parking.

The city took the action back in August to encourage movement and turnover of the on-street parking close to several restaurants and shops in downtown Roswell.

Visitors may pay for on-street parking at a kiosk pay station at the corner of Canton Street and Elizabeth Way by entering their vehicle’s license plate number and paying with a credit card.

Alternatively, visitors can download and pay for on-street parking by using the Park Mobile Smartphone application, parkmobile.io.

Before 6 p.m., the first two hours of parking will be free. After 6 p.m., the fee will be $1 for the first two hours. Ad-

Visitors looking for free parking within walking distance to downtown Ro-

swell will still have plenty of options to choose from, including: The City Hall parking lot, 38 Hill Street, has more than 400 free parking spaces available.

The parking lot on Green Street behind Fire Station No. 1 at 1056 Green Street has 70 free parking spaces 24 hours a day, every day.

The lot at the Hagan Center on the northeast corner of Canton and Norcross streets offers 67 free spaces after 5 p.m. on weeknights and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Parking on Canton Street has been a hot issue plaguing the city for decades, and in the past couple of years, people have become more vocal about it. For years, citizen groups and downtown merchants have pushed for more public parking in the highly popular downtown area.

In 2018, the city leased three parking lots: the Green Street lot, with 70 spaces, Harlow lot on the corner of Canton and Norcross Street, with 84 spaces on nights and weekends, and the Methodist Church lot on Magnolia Street, with 92 spaces on Friday and Saturday nights. It has also created a Rideshare space on Canton Street.

Ga. 400 Hospitality Highway Century event rides again

By JULIA GRCOHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — After public outcry from fans and bicyclists, the Ga. 400 Hospitality Highway Century bike ride has been reinstated for 2020.

The ride, which has been held annually since 2009, gives participants a rare chance to ride their bicycles on a section of Ga. 400. The event requires special permitting to close a section of the highway for about half an hour.

“We are one of two in the nation that has a highway portion of a ride,” said organizer Eric Broadwell. “It’s a very unique experience.”

On Dec. 11, Broadwell sent a notice that the Georgia Department of Transportation had denied permitting to close Ga. 400 for the bike ride this coming year, essentially ending the event.

Fans soon rallied and signed a petition to save the ride, and after a few days, gathered nearly 1,500 signatures.

Broadwell himself also reached out to political advocates to see what they could do to help reinstate the ride.

“I talked about the economic impact,” Bradwell said. “Everybody felt that it needed to continue, because it’s kind of a signature event for Roswell and draws

The event has raised more than $390,000 throughout the years, mostly through registration, and has donated the funds to local charities. The event now has adopted a major charity: Emory Healthcare.

Some participants also stay at local hotels and patronize local businesses during their stay.

“One year, I calculated that there was about a $34,000 tax revenue generated just even from the sales that people said they had spent,” Broadwell said.

Since its inception in 2009, more than 75,000 riders have participated in the event, and it regularly brings in participants from across the nation and occasionally from other countries. “The goal of the ride was to introduce Roswell

and North Fulton as a fantastic place to ride your bike,” Broadwell said. “But the ride was also to create economic impact.

We want to bring people to Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton and Sandy Springs, not only for them to see the communities, but to come back and explore the cities.”

Broadwell said the event has most recently been gaining traction and popularity.

“USA had just committed to help us push nationally,” he said. “We were becoming the Peachtree Road Race on the bike.”

GDOT has agreed to the permitting for the 2020 ride, but organizers will have to work with the agency regarding upcoming construction on Ga. 400.

For rides beyond 2020, the future is a bit unclear. Broadwell said they will work with GDOT regarding construction.

The route may go north instead of south in the future, for example, or organizers may have to abstain for a few years.

“All of our concern is for the safety of our riders,” he said. “If there’s going to be something that isn’t cycling friendly, we don’t want to put people into that position.”

As in previous years, the 2020 ride will contain several different-length routes for riders of all levels.

Registration is expected to open early January at ga400century.com.

Popular radio personality starts new podcast

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Cadillac Jack, the longtime morning host of Kicks 101.5, and his wife, Donna Choate, are gearing up to release the first episode of their new podcast. It’s a new career direction for Jack, who was terminated from the station this summer.

On Jan. 7, the couple will debut their first episode of “Cadillac Jack: My Second Act,” a lifestyle podcast.

“We’ll be talking about things going on in our daily life,” Choate said.

“Current events, parenting, challenges, work-life balance, raising kids — a lot of it is going to be geared towards Northern Atlanta, where we live, but we’re going to be a podcast that anybody can listen to.”

Longtime fans of Cadillac Jack will still hear his sarcasm and storytelling but with no bars or rules, Jack said.

“I’m a southern, sarcastic storyteller,” Jack said. “That was always, internally, my calling card at the radio station. On all three of those elements, we’ll be able to expand much more. Basically, this is my morning show with my best friend, who happens to be my wife.”

The new format will also allow him to be even more transparent in his discussions.

Politics and religion, for example, were two topics Jack could not broach on the radio. The podcast, however, is much freer about such subjects.

“I control the brand,” Jack said. “I control the messaging.”

The two co-hosts are most looking forward to having great conversations, Choate said.

“On the radio, you could be having great conversation that sort of got interrupted by music, or games, or giveaways or commercials,” she said. “And even though it is a podcast, we’re going to incorporate listeners and people. They’ll be able to leave us messages and comment on things we’re talking about.”

The couple said it was a “very, very” easy decision to switch to podcasting.

Jack said he noticed that the medium was gaining traction, especially among radio

stations, where he saw an increase in marketing and stories directing listeners to podcasts.

“Everybody is shifting,” he said.

Choate said podcasts also allow fans to rewind or hear old episodes everywhere, regardless of where they live.

“People would say, ‘I heard your husband talked about something really funny today. Do you know what he said?’” Choate said. “If you missed it, you missed it. But the great thing about what we’re doing now is you can rewind, you can fast forward, if you really loved it you can listen to it two or three times… It really opens it up to everyone to listen.”

After 26 years of radio, Jack and Choate have built up a strong base of listeners, whom they call friends and family, and they said they’re excited to welcome more into their lives.

“They have always been a part of the fabric of our lives,” Choate said. “They’re not just people we are broadcasting to.

They are actually people who we know as much about their lives as they know about ours.”

“Cadillac Jack: My Second Act” will air episodes twice a week on all major podcast platforms as well as on northfulton.com/podcasts.

Alpharetta welcomes 158-room Home2 Suites

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta’s portfolio of hotels just got bigger with the recent opening of the Home2 Suites by Hilton Alpharetta at 12075 Morris Road.

Dozens of dignitaries and business leaders were on hand for a ribbon cutting Dec. 13, including key executives from Hilton.

The 158-suite hotel developed and owned

by Mitesh Patel of RAM Hotels, provides convenient access to Alpharetta attractions such as the shops and restaurants of Avalon.

RAM Hotels started operations in 2003 and currently owns and operates 23 hospitality properties in Alabama and Georgia. The company plans to open two more hotels within the next quarter, has four under construction and four in the early planning phase.

Patel, executive vice president of RAM Hotels, said the hotel’s featured amenities, like all Suite-style rooms, outdoor kitchen, fire pit and fitness center make it a perfect fit for the Avalon shopping area.

“We are confident this will capture premium extended-stay clients to stay with us for long term,” Patel said.

With close to two dozen hotels now operating within its borders, Alpharetta has drawn a large share of the business and entertainment hospitality market for North Fulton.

In addition to drawing people who stay, shop and eat in local restaurants, hotels provide cities with additional revenue in the form of local hotel/motel taxes. These taxes can add up into the hundreds of thousands each year.

Roswell is currently home to 11 hotels.

Four additional hotels are in development — three business class hotels on Westside Parkway and a boutique hotel in the Historic District.

Roswell Inc, the city’s economic development arm, is pursuing a plan to bring more hotels into the city and recently launched a second hotel feasibility study in partnership with Visit Roswell, said Roswell Inc Director of Communications and Public Relations Carisa Turner.

Johns Creek has three hotels operating within the city.

Matthew Thomas, Alpharetta Economic Development manager, said the hospitality industry serves to help keep the local economy vibrant.

“We know we have a lot of corporate travelers in the city during the week,” Thomas said. “A lot of them do business here, and to have the supply of hotels to accommodate those travelers doing business in our city with a great product such as Home2 Suites means Alpharetta is even better positioned to accommodate meetings, accommodate events and other needs of the business community.”

For 2020, let’s leave the clutter in the past Let’s just start off that we all agree we were way too gluttonous over the holidays, and it’s time to clear out the clutter and find the right laser-focus that is going to make 2020 the best year ever.

Maybe not all of us, and maybe not to that extreme, but for sure, all of us can always find ways to improve. And January is a great time to take that to heart.

Last week, I had the great fortune of talking to a friend, Wendy Ellin, whose business and passion is to help high-lev-

el executives organize their work-lives.

Her job — and she’s very successful at it — is to create productive work spaces and processes so her clients can work more efficiently. She’s a New Yorker who gets straight to the point and will tell you exactly what’s holding you back in your workspace and how you can more efficiently push yourself forward.

Since we are all looking for clarity right now, here are a few things that Ellin says every one of her clients have found helpful.

Ellin is a huge fan of keeping a clean E-mail Inbox. A workmate of mine asked her why she thought this was important.

“Do you go to your regular mailbox and only take out what you want? And let everything else pile up?” she said.

She suggests first to sort your inbox by “sender,” then go down the list and delete all the e-mails you no longer need. She strongly suggests just deleting anything over a year old. But, she says that if you absolutely have to hold onto

Inventory is a very expensive asset. Making sure your customers can get your products when they want them while at the same time minimizing your investment in inventory will help you maximize your profits.

Ongoing planning, taking advantage of discount terms with your vendors and utilizing inventory management technology will help you to manage inventory in your small business and improve your bottom-line results.

Ellin also talks about not letting an inability to do something perfectly get in the way of doing that thing at all. For example, all of us have that task we want to accomplish. But we put it off until we have a clear idea of how it will end perfectly. Success lies not in completing a perfect project, but in actually starting the project at all. Annual budgets, planning for a new strategy or planning for a new company position are all things that get put off while we wait until the perfect moment. She says to just put it on your calendar and get started.

She reminds me of one of my favorite Vince Lombardi quotes when she talks about the not letting the desire to be perfect get in the way of creating something excellent.

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence,” Lombardi once said.

Ellin also believes we should all make a commitment to never be late. This is one small thing you can do to manage people’s perception of you. Because after all, we earn our reputation either way. Ellin says to schedule travel time on your calendar before every meeting or event so that you arrive on time. And then honor it. If you are the first one there, you can use the time to catch up on managing your inbox, catch up on a task you were involved in, or just plain catch your breath.

Alpharetta Chamber announces Taylor mortgage team joins Synovus 2020 officers and board members COLUMBUS, Ga. — Synovus Mortgage has announced ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce has announced the volunteer officers and Board of Directors for 2020.

Ron Altman, owner of BurgerFi restaurant, becomes the chamber’s eighth chairperson. He replaces Lisa G. Shippel of Lisa Shippel Law, LLC, who becomes immediate past chair.

Educating parents about what students need before they enter the classroom is very important. Through our work with groups like the Children’s Development Academy (CDA) and Georgia Pre-K, Fulton County Schools is creating better understanding about these resources and how parents can prepare their students.

At the other end of the educational cycle, we also have to focus on dropout prevention. All high school students face pressures — grades, peer pressure, bullying, alcohol and drugs — creating high levels of emotional stress. The board has focused on adding resources to help address these needs, but it is never enough. When kids don’t see the connection between their education and their future, they may determine the best option is to leave. We must take time to reach these students, find the causes and help guide them to graduation.

Our goal is to help every student graduate ready to reach their goals.

Good news. Heading into 2020 I feel as if we are moving in the right direction with Dr. Looney at the helm. He has valuable experience, shares our priorities, and has had success dealing with these issues. The board and he are personally dedicated to ensuring we are on the right track.

So, every year about this time I am convinced that I’m probably going to have to skip this year’s Christmas/ holiday column because I can’t think of anything positive to say. I have Ray appen a hard time getting Publisher Emeritus past how polarized ray@appenmediagroup.com we have become and all the many horrible events that have been transpiring — the evil, debilitating acts unworthy of humankind.

Every year, however, I ultimately end up remembering this: For every act of hatred, for every evil event, for every unkindness, for every minuscule or massive selfish act — like mass shootings — there are a thousand beacons of light, kindness, courage and grace; we just don’t always see them or hear about them like we do with the bad stuff.

Good intentions are OK. But good acts are better. Action is better than intention. That’s what our minister Ollie Wagner keeps telling us.

“Don’t just think about doing something to help people, actually do something.” This is one minister who, for the record, practices what he preaches too.

Acts of courage and grace are all around us in the person of your neighbor, your kid’s teacher, your old friend from college, the new person at work or just some complete stranger who is stopping to change a flat tire of a stranger. Grace is found in those fostering a child, pulling someone out of a burning house, taking in a refugee family, sitting someone’s adult parent with dementia so they can have a couple hour break, reading to someone or just sitting next to a friend or stranger and listening.

she walks the walk and consistently is coaching me to do the same. And I know and realize that I fall so short on the “do something” spectrum. If I have any goal for 2020, it is going to be become that someone who actually does more. My wife, and my children have taught me 99 percent of what I know that is worth knowing, and how to live as well — and how we should treat others. To them I am so grateful.

There are no small or large acts of grace or courage; they are all the same size — the size of the entire planet, the size of “being alive,” the size of “past the stars.”

Horace Mann once wrote: “Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.”

That victory is achieved every time your attention is focused outward instead of inward, and in some way that makes someone else’s life better or happier or less alone — “past the stars.”

Being kind to one person shines as brightly as the light that comes when thousands are saved.

Grace is color blind and has no nationality. So is the courage to act with grace, too. When Christ said “that what you did not do for the least of these (my children) you did not do for me,” he meant everyone — including those who cross borders out of fear, those who feel helpless, who are hungry, and those who are persecuted. They are all his children and we are expected to help them all.

When we choose not to, we are choosing to separate ourselves from God and his grace.

I watch my wife ask others how they are doing. I hear her ask about their children, their parents, their job — or their job hunt. I watch her take food to them. I see her invite them to eat with the group — day in, day out. There are no large or small acts of grace or kindness; they are all the same size.

What will you say to your children someday, or their children?

Acts of courage require making choices, making decisions about whose values and standards to follow — yours or theirs, yours or your parties, yours and what is right or theirs and

what is expedient. They are all choices.

For elected officials, when is it time to vote for what you know is right, even if it means the vote is not expedient and may not help you get reelected?

Is holding office so important that it is worth compromising what and who you are until you can’t even recognize yourself — compromising and betraying who your children and grandchildren thought you were or what you stood for?

This has nothing to do with any of the current political chaos. It has everything to do with stuff like whether or not we want to help each other or hurt each other or whose laws and values we choose to follow — man’s or Gods. It about the personal decisions we make.

Our neighborhoods, our city, our state is full of good people who care, who participate in mission trips, who volunteer, who give time and raise money to help those who are less fortunate than they are. I can think of so many individuals I know personally who are amazing in this way. Yet then so many turn around and make choices to do just the opposite and attack, demean, criticize and basically contribute to making our collective world a worse place because they are a Democrat or a Republican or because they hold office and choose to vote for what they don’t really believe, in order to be reelected.

Why do so many of us choose to compromise our values and the good works we do — the work we perform to help the least of us — by not having the discipline and the faith to be loyal to our real values, and instead opt out to adopt the values and contempt of others?

We all have the capacity to take the higher road, the more difficult road, the road that is ruled by love and unshakable faith.

So, despite what seems to be a world turned upside down today — one beyond redemption and reconciliation — I choose to hold on to hope and faith in us and to celebrate our “better angels.”

SEL issues are family and community in nature, with the schools supporting the parents and students.

And speaking of balance, you can hardly ignore the elephant in the room — the role technology and social media have played in changing the classroom and our students’ larger world. Technology has changed our world and education in many positive ways. But it has also reportedly contributed to many of the issues related to SEL. Too much screen time, negative social media issues, and a general feeling of isolation are but three of the problems that are commonly mentioned. This is a critical area that I hope our community and district strive to find balance for in the new year. If we believe that too much screen time might be having a negative effect, what are the responsibilities of the school system? What are the things we can model in our own homes to impact it?

So for 2020, I hope we all strive to find the right balance, whether in family or work. I know that as your representative I will continue to ask the questions and seek the best balance for our students and district. Happy New Year!

Region 7-6A basketball teams enter second push of region play

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Fans will likely be in for another tight race for the No. 1 seed in the Region 7-AAAAAA tournament with the standings logjammed after the initial round of region games in boys and girls play. Region play tips back off this week following the holiday break.

The standings are especially tight in boys play with the top six teams separated by one game or fewer.

Near the top of the fray is Cambridge, defending region champs who are 5-2 against 7-AAAAAA opponents. The Bears have a host of new talent leading the squad this season, and their added focus on defensive play has allowed them to outscore their region foes by an average of 15 points per game.

One of the Bears’ two region losses is to Johns Creek, who downed Cambridge 83-82 on Dec. 10.

Since compiling a 24-5 overall record in the 2015-16 season, the Gladiators have been near the bottom of the 7-AAAAAA standings the last three seasons. However, Johns Creek seems to have hit its stride in the opening half of this year, winning nine of their opening 12 games and compiling a 5-2 region record.

The surge has been led by the Gladiators’ offense which is tops in the region with 78 points per game in 7-AAAAAA play. Senior guard Jordan Johnson has been a consistent leader on the stat sheet, scoring 25 or more points in the Gladiators’ last four region games.

Chattahoochee, which finished third in the region tournament last season, enters the second half of its region schedule fourth in the standings. The talent-rich Cougars return to action this Friday against Cambridge.

Hooch’s two region losses have been in tight contests. The Cougars fell to Pope, 67-61, and dropped their Dec. 6 matchup with then undefeated North Atlanta, 55-51.

Despite a sub-.500 overall record,

Centennial is winning the games that truly count — its 7-AAAAAA contests.

Under second-year head coach Matt Barksdale, the Knights are 4-2 to open region play.

Centennial will be challenged early in its return to region play with the Knights taking on Pope Jan. 2 and Johns Creek Jan. 4.

After winning their opening region matchup over Dunwoody, Alpharetta has dropped five straight to put the Raiders at seventh in the standings in Clay Crump’s first season at the helm.

Northview has battled throughout its region schedule but has come up just short in several contests. The Titans fell to Cambridge, Centennial and Pope by eight points or fewer and lost their Dec. 10 matchup with North Atlanta, 60-57, in overtime.

After winning its season opener, Dunwoody has since dropped 12 straight games, including seven region tilts. The Wildcats, ninth in the 7-AAAAAA standings, are back in action Jan. 4 against Northview.

GIRLS While the standings are a bit more spread out in girls play, there will still be plenty of jostling for position when region play resumes this week.

Leading the standings entering the second phase of 7-AAAAAA games is Johns Creek. The Gladiators are tied at 6-1 with Cambridge in the standings, but Johns Creek took the Dec. 10 matchup of the teams, 57-46.

The Gladiators returned much of their offensive firepower from last year’s state tournament team and have the region’s top scoring offense with an average of 56 points per game in 7-AAAAAA play. Senior guard Ahmia Childs has led the way with significant contributions from junior guard Carson Tanguilig and senior forward Samantha Breslow.

Cambridge is off to its best start in program history and will look to continue to rack up region wins this week.

With just two seniors on its roster, the Bears’ youth has powered an impressive start to the season. Freshman Jordynn Dudley has been a major offensive contributor, with sophomore Angelina Cofrancesco and junior Kennedy Daniels contributing on both sides of the court.

Alpharetta has also enjoyed early season success compiling a 5-1 region record ahead of the break under firstyear head coach Rickey Jordan.

After falling to Cambridge to tip off its region schedule, Alpharetta has won five straight in 7-AAAAAA play, including a 49-46 win over leaders Johns Creek on Dec. 10. Sophomore Simone Lett has led the Raiders, averaging a team-leading 12 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

Johns Creek, Cambridge and Alpharetta have separated themselves from the pack, with Pope and North Atlanta tied for fourth with 3-3 marks in region play.

Dunwoody will enter its Jan. 4 matchup with Northview at sixth in the standings. The Wildcats are seeking

Three-time defending region champions Northview are at the bottom of the standings at 0-7 in 7-AAAAAA play.

After losing several standouts to graduation and former head coach Chris Yarbrough, the Titans have fallen from being the consistent leader in the region standings. Under new head coach Michael Martin, the Titans are 0-13 overall and are being outscored by an average of 41 points per game in region play.

Tailgating, literally 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 The proposal from Chevy was simple and hard to refuse.

The auto manufacturer would provide me with a 2020 Silverado 2500 packed with tailgating gear and tickets to the Nov. 30 matchup of JOE PARKER Tennessee/VanderEditor joe@appenmediagroup.com bilt football game in Knoxville. All I had to do was make the drive, tailgate and tell you, my dear readers, about the experience.

I am sure a lot of logistics work, planning and preparation went into making this possible for me, only for my lack of preparation to ruin it all.

I was not a Boy Scout for long, not enough time for me to adhere to its motto about always being prepared, anyway.

Instead of looking ahead at where to park, I instead chose to just drive in the vicinity of Neyland Stadium and find a spot. That raised no real issues until I found out that I stumbled upon a geological wonder — a 1.3-mile hike that inclined sharply, both ways.

That would not have been so bad except for the fact that it was raining.

Hard.

I was hardly a stone’s throw away from the Silverado and already soaked because I was unprepared. I knew it was going to rain. I knew I would be rained on. But instead of planning accordingly, I simply grabbed a jacket that morning that I was pretty sure was water resistant. It was not.

My partner on this trip, my father, did have a little foresight and packed

rain pants. Lucky enough one pair did fit me, in the sense that I was able to put them on, but I am pretty sure the experience has left me without the ability to reproduce.

Before the rain picked up and not long after we arrived in Knoxville, there was only a persistent drizzle in the air.

But no worries, Chevy provided a large canopy that would keep our beers from being watered down. Well, that would have been the case, except I left the canopy at home.

I had removed the cooler provided in the 2500 and replaced it with my dad’s, which already had ice in it. The problem was, the cooler provided in the Chevy was not empty, it contained the tent’s canopy. And if you were wondering, a canopy doesn’t block much rain when it is located inside a cooler 200 miles away.

Being exposed to the rain could have fried all the electronics Chevy had sent along, including a TV and large speaker, but only if they were actually supplied with power. And they were not, because I had not thought of that.

So, is the 2500 a work truck also good for play?

Well, I can say that the biggerfor-2020 Silverado swallowed up tailgating gear with ease. Packed in the backseat were two foldable chairs, a TV, large speaker, sizeable table, a tent base (without a canopy), a hefty cooler and other items under the rear seats.

The 2500’s wheelbase has been stretched 5.2 inches on new models, and the 2500 is taller and wider overall. The swelling has given the heavy-duty some added capability. Max trailering on gas models is 14,500-pounds and opting for a diesel adds 4,000 to that figure. My gas-powered four-wheel drive crew cab came with the optional Gooseneck/5th Wheel Package ($1,090) which allowed for a max of 16,650 pounds. Chevy also has tons of trailering tech and several cameras to get the big boy through tight spaces, but buyers need to select higher trims or tick options boxes.

The 2500 also has a large tailgate, which easily accommodated the food my father and I had picked up and ate on the tailgate before the sky’s taps opened.

So, while there was enough gear in the cab of the Silverado to rival some “man caves,” we tailgated, literally.

Powering our trip was Chevy’s new 6.6-liter V8 offering 401 horses and 464 ft.-lb. of torque, which replaces the 6.0-liter. The new power plant had plenty of grunt to get the heavy-duty Chevy on the move with ease and provides quick responses to throttle input.

The V8 is paired with a six-speed automatic that, despite a lower number of gears, avoided clumsy changes at low speed and was quick to drop a cog when I looked to pass a left-lane loiterer.

As with most heavy-duty pickups, the Silverado’s ride is flouncy riding without the added weight of a trailer or full bed.

While the 2500’s interior is cavernous, it’s pretty humdrum. The styling is taken directly from the half-ton pickup, and there is quite a lot of cheap-feeling plastic. While a 7-inch screen (8-inchers are standard in higher trims) is a respectable size in most autos, the 2500’s massive dash make it seem diminutive.

Chevy’s Infotainment 3 is fairly straightforward and responds swiftly to input, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity come standard.

The Silverado’s seats were comfortable enough for shorter treks, but after the 200-mile trip to Knoxville, I was wishing for a little bit more support. On the way back from the game, however, the 2500’s seats felt lavish.

You know those square-foot hexagonal paving stones people use to outline flower beds or their driveways? Sit on one of those and you can experience both the size and comfort of a “seat” at Neyland Stadium.

The 2500 is offered in five trim levels, from the base work truck to the wellappointed High Country. My Custom (a new trim and only available with the gasoline V8) tester was second from bottom in the lineup and came with 20inch wheels, a trailering package with hitch guidance, 12-fized tie downs in the bed and rear bumper corner steps. The tester also came with the Custom Value Package ($1,880) which adds remote start, LED lighting in the bed, trailer brake controller, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, SiriusXM capability and other features.

With a few grand in options, the crew cab, four-wheel drive model rang in a bit over $48,000. Base regular cabs start a bit under $36,000 with the decked out High County Crew Cab going for $62,895 with the gasoline-powered V8.

As far as tailgating is concerned, the 2500 has plenty of room to transport just about anything you could want for your pre-game setup. If you can deal with an unsettling ride, the Silverado has plenty of passenger and cargo space powered by responsive and powerful engine to eat up the miles toward the stadium. Just make sure you are prepared to tailgate.

After sleeping for less than six hours the night before the game and having to deal with the stress of driving in torrential rain for over three hours following the game, I arrived home exhausted. I was also thoroughly soaked and wanted nothing more than to take off my cold, drenched socks.

Despite my ill-preparedness, it was a great day. My Volunteers beat Vandy, I found the only hill in the known world that rises in both directions, I learned that my jacket was not waterproof and would stick to me like I was a vacuumsealed pork chop when wet, and I received a valuable lesson in planning ahead. Most importantly, I got to spend the day with my dad — and that was a good time with no tailgating required.

Car passenger charged for gun possession ROSWELL, Ga. — A Roswell man was charged on possession of drugs and possession of a firearm without a license following a traffic stop on Dec. 16.

The suspect was the passenger in a car pulled over by police just after midnight. The driver was charged with DUI, and the passenger could not take possession of the car because he was also under the influence of alcohol, according to the incident report. The passenger was released and allowed to walk to a nearby restaurant.

While searching the car, police found a handgun in the passenger side floorboard. Police then tracked down the passenger who did not have a license to carry the gun. Police also located individual baggies of marijuana on the suspect.

He was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies (possession of marijuana) and possession of a firearm without a license.

Roswell Street to be renamed after pastor, community activist ROSWELL, Ga. — On Friday, January 17 at 11 a.m., the City of Roswell, at the request of the Dr. Frank Lewis Legacy Foundation, Inc., will rename Dobbs Drive in Roswell after pastor and community activist Rev. Frank Lewis. The street will be renamed to Frank Lewis Drive.

Lewis was the pastor of Zion Missionary Baptist Church from spring 1983 until his death on Aug. 5, 2014.

During his tenure, Lewis was considered a pillar in the Roswell community with his Christian Ministry and philanthropic contributions.

For over a quarter of a century, he championed campaigns to generating funding and support for multiple churches, medical clinics, missionar ies and a variety of other missional needs, including Haiti, South Korea, Nova Scotia, Canada and numerous multicultural outreaches in the Roswell area.

“Dr. Frank Lewis had more Eagle Scouts from his church than North Fulton County combined and that speaks volumes about that man’s leadership and what an inspiration he was to a lot of people, including me,” said former judge Maurice H. Hilliard, Jr.
