ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Nearly $180,000 worth of computer equipment was reported stolen from a Mansell Overlook office building.

Police said 179 computers went missing from the offices of a minerals-based company in the building. An executive reported the theft Oct. 8, telling officers the company bought about 700 Lenovo computers in December. The devices were stowed away in a storage room on the sixth floor until they could be formatted for employees. The computers remained in the storage room through the end of July as COVID-19 forced many employees to work remotely from home, the woman said.

Alpharetta man defrauded by rental ad on Craigslist ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Alpharetta man reported Oct. 6 that he had been scammed when he wired $444 to rent a home he found on Craigslist.

The victim, a 48-year-old Alpharetta firefighter, told police he found the home online Oct. 4. The ad poster sent him a contract from a Google email account.

The man filled out the contract, and the poster asked him to send the $444 fee through Zelle. When the victim sent the money, the poster stopped responding to him, according to a police report.

He told officers he contacted his bank and Zelle to report the fraud, but neither had returned his payment. He also notified Craigslist about the alleged scam, and the site removed the ad.

Police noted that someone later posted another ad with the same information.

Police investigate report of threat at karaoke bar

ROSWELL, Ga. — Police were called to Chaplins restaurant and karaoke bar on Oct. 8 following reports of a gun threat.

According to police, an angry patron was reported to have made threats and said he would return to the establishment

around July 27 and were given key cards to the storage room.

All of the computers were accounted for when company officials took stock Aug. 27, according to police. But by Sept. 15, about 60 computers had gone missing. Company officials reported the missing computers to management but did not contact police until another 100 were discovered to be missing Sept. 30.

Each of the computers was valued at $1,000, according to police. The company representative told officers that in addition to the key card lock, the door was secured with a deadbolt lock requiring key access. She said the remaining computers were moved to a different storage office that is secured.

Police questioned the manager and bouncer, who told them the man nearly provoked a fight inside the bar so they escorted him out. A bartender said she only served the man one drink, which he never even finished before he was kicked out. But she said she thought he’d had drinks before he arrived.

Police criminally trespassed the man from the business and remained on scene until he left the area in a ride share, according to the report.

Woman cited for stalking after incident at restaurant ROSWELL, Ga. — A Roswell woman was accused of following store employees to their homes after she had been kicked out of a deli, according to Roswell police.

Police arrested 22-year-old Veronica Martinez-Granda, of Park Ridge Court, and charged her with stalking.

According to the report, Martinez-Granda stole a cell phone and caused a dispute at American Deli, 10479 Alpharetta St., on Oct. 7. The store’s manager and an employee called police and requested a criminal trespass warning be issued to the woman. Officers responded to a Hemingway Lane apartment complex early the following morning. The deli

Fulton schools reopen after 7-month pause Virtual learning remains the choice for thousands

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON — A milestone in the slow rebound from COVID-19 was the reopening of schools in Fulton County last week and the cautious return of students and staff.

On Oct. 14, almost seven months to the day the pandemic shuttered school buildings, teachers and students were again in the same classrooms — albeit socially distanced and wearing face masks under the new rules of normal.

Approximately 60 percent of the district’s 90,600 students chose to return to schools. The rest chose to continue with classes online.

Among North Fulton’s 48 schools, the return rate was slightly higher with about 65 percent of students opting for face-to-face instruction.

Decisions varied across the region, from nearly every child back in class at Vickery Mill Elementary in Roswell, to fewer than 35 percent returning in person at Creekview Elementary in Alpharetta.

Zone 5, which includes schools in the Centennial and Roswell high school cluster, saw the highest rate of return with 76 percent of students opting for in-person instruction. Zone 6, which includes Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview high schools, had the lowest return rate, with just over half of students back in classrooms.

School Superintendent Mike Looney said the district has been planning since last spring on how to safely reopen

schools as the pandemic persists. A phased re-opening tied to health data served as the Fulton School System blueprint.

“I’m really pleased and thankful that we stayed true to the commitment [I made] to the community of letting the data drive the decision-making process,” Looney said.

Schools began phase one after Labor Day, beginning with small groups of students in school for one day a week and gradually adding more students for longer periods.

Looney said the decision to move forward with the full reopening on Oct. 14 was made at nearly the last minute to ensure health data supported the decision. The target was for the county to have fewer than 100 COVID cases per 100,000 residents.

“We had two back-to-back reports [that gave us] the green light for faceto-face instruction,” Looney said. “I’m thankful we stayed true to [our] commitment of letting the data drive the decision-making process.”

Despite health data that indicates an improving situation, thousands of parents opted to keep their kids home. Many took to social media to challenge the health data and the decision to reopen.

Chief Academic Officer Cliff Jones said the district supports any decision parents make for their children.

“We will honor and continue to support [families who], for whatever reason, do not want to return to face-to-face instruction,” Jones said.

He outlined the 12-step process for virtual learning designed to improve instruction and address concerns parents and teachers have expressed.

Schools are also working to support teachers as they instruct students in person and remotely. Many teachers have said the hybrid approach for inclass and virtual students is not sustainable.

School can choose from three ways to organize classes: teachers either have all remote or all face-to-face; teachers have a mix of students; and/or teachers have some classes in person and other classes with remote learners.

Because of the complexity in scheduling with the three options, parents are being asked to not change their decision from face-to-face or remote learning until next semester.

A representative for Fulton Schools said Looney will make a decision by Thanksgiving on plans for instruction next semester.

Roswell approves $243,000 for Big Creek Parkway design

Big Creek Parkway will be a two-lane connector roadway that starts at Warsaw Road and runs east to Old Alabama Road.

It will feature a new bridge spanning Ga. 400, and the project will rebuild an existing bridge on Old Holcomb Bridge Road.

City officials envision the road will be a pressure valve to reduce eastbound and westbound traffic coming off Ga. 400 at Holcomb Bridge Road.

Phase 1 of the two-pronged project will widen Warsaw Road, add turn lanes and include improvements at its intersection with Holcomb Bridge Road. At the Sept. 30 committee meeting, Rauf said a phase 1 construction contract could come before the committee within the next month. He estimated construction on that portion of the project would get underway by early next spring.

The new roadway and bridge are slated to be built as part of the project’s second phase, which will also feature upgrades at the Old Holcomb Bridge Road.

Initial plans for Big Creek Parkway called for the roadway to extend to Holcomb Bridge Road’s junction at Old Holcomb Bridge Road. But during an August 2019 open house, residents requested the

thruway be extended farther west to Warsaw Road. Four days later, the City Council pushed forward that request at a work session. The board later approved a $1.5 million contract for design of the realigned road at a Sept. 9, 2019 council meeting.

That contract with Gresham Smith did not include costs for extending the road. Rauf said the money earmarked during the Oct. 13 meeting covers that work. He noted that the amount was already included as contingency funds in the existing contract.

“I certainly support this, connection to Warsaw is a crucial detail,” Councilman Mike Palermo said at the Sept. 30 committee meeting.

Palermo asked Rauf why it took so long for the contract modification to come before the board “We wanted to bring you an exact amount for what it’s going to need to design it,” Rauf said.

Rauf said he hopes to begin the design-build bid process for phase 2 of the project next fall. He indicated that plans for the project continued over the past year and the need to amend the design contract has not held up progress.

“Nothing is changing scheduling wise,” he said. “We just wanted to be sure that we bring it just once for approval.”

Advocacy group reminds drivers to keep their focus on the road Alpharetta woman injured in 2008 crash leads campaign effort

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It is a message often heard and always understood — distracted driving endangers all on the road — but sometimes we need a reminder.

That is the message behind a new campaign from Molly Welch, an Alpharetta native and founder of distracted driving awareness group A Second Later.

The group is fundraising for bumper stickers and magnets reminding drivers to keep their eyes on the road, a simple message with serious implications Welch knows all too well.

In 2008, Welch was a junior at Auburn studying journalism. After visiting a friend over the weekend, she was driving back to her school when she suffered the consequences of distracted driving firsthand.

Welch took her eyes off the road to play back a recording she had made of an interview. In that momentary lapse, her car veered into oncoming traffic and was struck by a pickup truck.

The crash left Welch in a coma for weeks and with a traumatic brain injury.

The incident left her nearly unable to speak, and it was three years before she could walk again.

Welch’s story has a positive outcome, though, following speech and physical therapy. She completed her bachelor’s degree four years after the crash and now works as a motivational speaker and leads initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of driving while distracted.

It is her hope the bumper stickers and magnets will help keep drivers’ attention on the road ahead.

“I want to see them on the back of every car, bus or truck,” Welch said. “Like the name, ‘A Second Later,’ that’s all it takes. It’s not worth it. No conversation, no text message, it’s not worth the suffering and heartache.”

Marie Koch, owner of North Atlanta Kids Directory, became involved with Welch and the awareness campaign and emphasized the importance of the magnets as a reminder to stay focused while driving.

“It’s a nice reminder,” Koch said. “It can change your life, a stranger’s life and then you have the ripple effect to

families, just because someone was putting on mascara while driving. It’s not just texting, it’s eating, being distracted by music or anything else.”

Welch said she hopes the stickers and magnets will raise awareness and help her get the message to others.

Funds collected through A Second Later will be used to spread the word on billboards and in movie theaters. It will also help Welch to travel to other states to speak. Her message is geared to all ages. She has spoken before senior resource groups and to kids in fifth grade.

“Distracted driving can affect any age,” Welch said. “Kids definitely should make sure they are not a distraction, and make sure parents have a cell phone mount so they’re not holding the phone or distracted by it.”

Fulton Schools extends superintendent’s contract

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON — The Fulton County Board of Education expressed its confidence in the district’s leadership by unanimously approving a contract extension for Superintendent Mike Looney through 2023.

The three-year contract is the maximum length a school superintendent can be under contract in Georgia. Historically, the Fulton County School Board has maintained a three-year rolling contract for its superintendents.

The extension made no others changes to Looney’s initial contract in June 2019 when he was hired. That contract provided Looney with a benefits and salary package of nearly $400,000 a year, placing him among the highest paid superintendents in Georgia’s 189 public school districts.

In announcing the contract extension on Oct. 13, School Board President Julia Bernath praised Looney for navigating the state’s fourth largest school district through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is clear through this tumultuous time that Dr. Looney’s guidance was critical to the stability and success of the district,” Bernath said. “With all the ups and downs, it was important for the board to confirm that district leadership remain consistent through the transition period back to education under nonCOVID circumstances.”

Last week, the district’s 106 schools finally opened to in-person instruction after a seven-month pause.

Stability in the leadership position has come under scrutiny in Fulton Schools in recent years. Looney is the ninth superintendent, either full time or interim, for the district over the past 25 years. Only one served longer than five years in the top position.

School District was a key factor in the board’s decision during the hiring process, according to those close to the selection.

“We have amazing students, teachers, principals, staff, parents and taxpayers, and they deserve consistent management as we focus on recovery and excelling going into the future,” Bernath said.

Roswell seeks to streamline business license renewals

By MATT BRUCE news@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell could soon make it easier for all 4,600 businesses in town to renew their license each year.

City officials discussed the change at an Oct. 13 Administration, Finance and Recreation and Parks Committee meeting.

Roswell Finance Director Ryan Luckett proposed revamping the occupation tax renewal process by eliminating revenue projections for the upcoming year.

It was the second time in two weeks City Council members addressed the occupation tax.

During a Sept. 29 council work session, city leaders discussed the prospect of shifting to a new IRS profitability table, a move that could’ve more than doubled some businesses’ tax rates in 2021.

That proposition was met with disapproval from at least three council members, who spurned the notion of a tax increase on local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other council members, however, suggested the city needed to switch to the correct profitability table to establish consistency and avoid a repeat of an accounting error that led to a $600,000 deficit in project-

The matter seemed to be at a stalemate when council members couldn’t reach a consensus on how to move forward at the end of the work session.

But the issue wasn’t on the table.

Instead, they talked about removing red tape from the city’s business license formula.

Luckett focused on streamlining the annual process by which Roswell business owners renew their license. Under the current model, owners must provide the city actual gross receipts documenting their revenue from the previous year. They must also give an estimated revenue marker for the current year.

The Business Registration office then compares the actual receipts from the

prior year to the business’ projections for that year. That helps the office calculate “true-up” adjustments to determine if the business owes the city money, should be credited for overpaying or paid the correct amount for the year.

Luckett recommended eliminating the estimations from the process and basing each business’ occupation tax only on its actual gross receipts from the previous year. That, he told council members, would simplify license renewals for business owners and make staff more efficient.

As she did at last month’s work session, Henry suggested making 2021 occupation taxes “revenue neutral,” a move that would cap assessments and ensure businesses aren’t hit with an increase in commercial taxes next year.

“Basically we are easing on into this, and we are conscientious about not

causing our businesses any additional harm,” Henry said. “We recognize COVID and we recognize what’s going on here and we’re switching the tables.”

Other council members focused on the application process.

They seemed to support Luckett’s idea, but it was clear there were still some kinks to work out. The biggest sticking point was how to treat reorganizing brand new businesses when they apply for licensing with no gross receipts from the previous year.

Luckett said the city would still rely on estimates from those businesses for their first year. But his proposal did not offer room for penalties or adjustments for incorrect first-year projections.

That didn’t sit well with several council members who sought adjustments for new businesses that miss the mark. “[For] the ones that should get a refund, is there a way that we can look at giving them that credit back?” Councilwoman Christine Hall asked. “Then on the other side, if people are too low, can we bill them for that amount?”

Luckett cautioned that tweak might nullify the gains made from streamlining the system.

General store aims to be outdoorsy gathering place in downtown Roswell

By MATT BRUCE news@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — When Bruno Costanzo would take his wife Julie out to dinner downtown, he grew restless accompanying her afterward when she window shopped at nearby boutiques.

The problem?

All of the shops seemed to cater to women.

Constanzo saw a void in storefronts tailored to the area’s male clientele and he sought to fill it.

The solution, he hopes, is Roswell General and Outfitters at 35 Woodstock Road, a stone’s throw from Canton Drive in the heart of downtown Roswell.

“I think there was a huge need for a guy place out on Canton Street,” Bruno Costanzo said.

The new business, which opened in June, is a partnership between two married couples that live across the street from each other. Bruno and Julie Costanzo joined with their longtime neighbors Robin and Ken Moncrief.

Robin Moncrief is a longtime Realtor who sells houses for Atlanta Fine Homes. Ken is a traveling food plant designer by trade. Meanwhile Bruno Costanzo has owned his own general contracting company in town for the past 15 years. Julie works as a schoolteacher.

The owners envision the store as a gathering place where people can hang out, have a beer and make connections.

They throw weekend grill parties on the front deck when professional chefs are invited to do casual cook sessions and share their craftsmanship on the Big Green Egg. “This is a community center,” Ken Moncrief said. “We encourage people to

The store is a throwback to campground general stores. But it has a modern twist. It’s anchored by two popular products with loyal customer bases — Big Green Egg and Yeti — serving as a platinum dealer for both brands.

Hats, BBQ sauces, housewares, coolers, charcoal, CBD products, thermoses and camping backpacks are other mainstays.

Robin Moncrief and Julie Costanza added the women’s touch, bringing in scented candles, lotions, penny candies and clothing for female customers.

The store seeks out local businesses and entrepreneurs to partner with, so many of the items are homegrown products. The themes are outdoor living, uncommon goods and family fun.

The couples bought the two-bedroom

home in January and planned to hire contractors to retrofit it. But COVID-19 forced them to scrap those plans. Instead, they did the work themselves. The foursome tore apart the home’s interior and rebuilt it, revamping the building from wood-planked floor boards to the vaulted ceilings.

“Since none of us were going to work, the four of us got on our hands and knees, gutted the whole building and re-did it in those few months,” Robin Moncrief said.

The store fittingly opened on Father’s Day this year.

The home had been a beauty salon, a day care, served as the offices of a dynamite shop, and was possibly even a ski store. All four said it was once a house of disrepute known for drug activity.

The couples spent 16 weeks between

February and June reshaping the building, chipping away at its past notoriety one board at a time.

Neighboring business owners, runners, bicyclists and pedestrians in the neighborhood witnessed the old home’s daily evolution as Ken, Bruno, Robin and Julie carried out the renovations.

“This is really like an egg to all these people, and now we’ve hatched it,” Ken Moncrief said.

The crew started doing their repairs shortly before COVID-19 reached the U.S. The pandemic bogged down supply, making it a hurdle to get items in the store. As companies shut down or scaled back, products took longer to be delivered. Julie Costanzo said Big Green Egg merchandise nearly didn’t make it in time for the store’s grand opening.

“It was very frightening,” Julie Costanzo said. “But we’ve been busy.

And the community has been so responsive.”

She noted another ironic twist of the pandemic. It slowed down business from the owners’ respective day jobs, allowing them to focus on repairs.

“It gave us the time to do this work,” she said. “So, in a way it was a blessing because we were able to build this store.”

Wood from a fallen tree at Barrington Hall, one of Roswell’s oldest homes, was used to build the store’s counter and is prominent throughout the shop. Bruno Costanzo said he hopes the store can provide locals relief from the pandemic.

“We took a horrible building at a horrible time and made it a beautiful structure,” he said. “At a time when the community [is] falling apart, they can come here and meet and socialize with one another..”

I’ve previously had the pleasure of speaking with you both separately regarding Premier Dermatology and your particular contributions to the practice, but I wanted to take time to sit down with you both to hear your thoughts on your continued success.

Dr. Taylor, congratulations on another win for Best of North Fulton 2020! This marks your 3rd year being named both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist in North Fulton since opening in 2017. That’s quite an accomplishment.

To what do you attribute your continued success?

Dr. Taylor: Thank you Alyssa! Well, as I’ve said in the past, I believe that my patients understand our sincerity and our dedication to our patients’ healthcare. Kathryn and I and our amazing team all honestly care about our patients and their well-being. I hope that that sincerity comes through during our interactions. We always strive to give our patients our complete attention and to learn more about an individual as a person as well as a patient. There are plenty of times when a patient brings something to our attention or compels us to do additional research, and Kathryn and I are constantly collaborating on our patients’ behalf. I believe that comes through. All of that, and my awesome dad jokes are a big hit. I’m a father of three boys ages seven, five and two, so I have plenty of time to practice my material.

Kathryn: I agree with everything that Dr. Taylor said, especially how nice the patients are to laugh at his jokes. Our team really is wonderful. We have experienced and caring team members. And we have received a lot of compliments that the practice has a personal and “boutique” feel, even as we deliver care that is scientific and academic.

Alyssa: Kathryn and Dr. Taylor, how is

everything going in this odd Covid time?

I believe Kathryn joined the practice in March? I bet that was an interesting time to expand?

Dr. Taylor: We are beyond grateful for the addition of Kathryn! She really is a fantastic provider and is knowledgeable and experienced in dermatology.

Most importantly, our skillsets really complement one another. For example, my focus in the vein clinic portion of our practice has been on treating venous disease that results in leg swelling and pain, and Kathryn has years of experience performing aesthetically-focused cosmetic sclerotherapy. She brought PRP for hair rejuvenation to the practice as well as chemical peels and is an expert Botox® and filler injector. The addition of another provider also means that we are frequently able to accommodate patients for same day or next day appointments. Covid was inconvenient but the slowdown also allowed us to make sure Kathryn’s integration to the practice was seamless.

Alyssa: Well I think that’s enough serious business for now. I thought we could ask a few casual questions to allow your readers get to know you both a little better.

If you won the lottery tomorrow what would be the first thing you did after you cashed it?

Brent: I would probably pay off the mortgages of my family and all my staff. And I would buy some new socks because mine are pretty sad right now.

And some chocolate chip cookies.

Kathryn: Flee the country and not tell my husband. No, seriously, after working so hard to put myself through college and my medical training, I would love to set up an educational fund for young adults from my hometown in Michigan so they could receive higher education and not have to take half of their adult life to pay it off.

If you could immediately become fluent in something, what would it be?

Brent: Italian. Feeling like a local in a foreign country has to be fun, and I think Italy tops my list.

Kathryn: Spanish. I was able to apply a lot of my “Splanglish” while living in South Florida, but Dr. Taylor puts me to shame when he is able to communicate fluently, and I only understand a portion of what he or my patients are saying.

What were you like in high school?

Brent: I was very smart. And very naive.

I had very little time for much besides keeping my nose to the grindstone but was still happy and people still joke that in the back of my head I seem to have The Girl From Ipanema playing on repeat.

Kathryn: I moved halfway through my freshman year, so it took me a bit to find my place. I was outgoing and took part in Cross Country, Basketball, Track, several academic and service clubs, played piano and worked as a server at a restaurant. I also enjoyed a lot of time on the beach of Lake Superior (cold, but true) Who is someone you look up to?

Brent: My dad. Sounds cliché’ but it’s true. My dad is just such a wonderful man. He’s kind and patient and incredibly intelligent. He has worked extremely hard to accomplish everything he has in life and really instilled in me a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. I am beyond fortunate for my family.

Kathryn: My Grandmother. She grew up on a dairy farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and taught school in a one room schoolhouse until she went to nursing school in Ontario in her 20’s. She didn’t marry my Grandfather until her late 20’s, had her children in her 30’s and worked as a nurse in Detroit until her 70’s. She always had a positive outlook on life and a laugh that would turn into a “hissing fit” because of her asthma, which made all around her giggle.

What do you do in your free time?

Brent: I use those ten seconds to fantasize about having free time. I’m only half-joking. Hobbies are a bit on pause with three boys seven and younger.

Every moment my wife and I have we try and do something for the kids. The park.

Hiking, playing baseball in the backyard, reading together, teaching them to ride a bike, fishing, playing piano. I don’t have children that will just sit and watch a movie. I don’t know if it’s their age but they are just nonstop. My wife refers to them as tiny tornados. When I do have time again, I’d like to resume flying.

I have my pilot’s license and love the beauty of the world seen from the air.

Kathryn: Traveling if I have that much time. Otherwise running, golf, hiking, kayaking and family and friend time.

Honestly, I love taking my dog for a walk on the greenway too!

If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Brent: Is this my opportunity to plug Outback Steakhouse and hope they mail me an honorary-Aussie free-food-for-life card?

Kathryn: Soup. My Dad was our primary cook growing up and never wastes food. You can make soup out of anything.

What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Brent: Watching fish swim around a coral reef in a sea so warm that you forget you’re even in the water.

Kathryn: Oh, this is a fun question.

Something to challenge myself. Going to a new place. Seeing something out of the ordinary. The last perfect trip I had was in Costa Rica, where I kayaked at night in bioluminescence water, climbed a 200 foot tree, hiked through the rain forest and swam in the river (yes, I got ticks). I even tried surfing and ate a termite! Flights and weather were perfect.

Locals were amazing. Can’t wait for the next perfect vacation.

What is something embarrassing about yourself?

Brent: Um, I never remember birthdays or anniversaries etc. Not because I don’t remember what day they are but because I don’t ever know what date it currently is. Oh, and I once was backstage a Miley Cyrus concert. It was a friend’s fault I promise!

Kathryn: I used to be amazing at remember peoples’ faces and names. Now I’ve turned into what I used to make fun of my mother for. Sigh.

What is a long-term goal?

Brent: More than anything I want my kids to grow up to reach their potential and be happy.

Kathryn: Ditto to that. Happiness and health for my children and never stop learning.

Local charity sees record numbers Good news feels so good Listen online as families sign up for holiday aid

By MATT BRUCE news@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The holidays are approaching, and that means it’s busy season at North Fulton Community Charities.

The Roswell-based nonprofit spends much of the year addressing homelessness and hunger. But the focus shifts to easing the financial strain on struggling families in the lead up to Thanksgiving and Christmas.

On Oct. 5, NFCC opened applications from families for five holiday giveback programs. North Fulton County is on pace for a record year of need. NFCC officials said more than 700 families signed up for holiday help through the first week of registration.

“We have never seen this high a demand,” NFCC Executive Director Holly York said. “We just have had to add so many families because of COVID that have never been in this situation before.”

The nonprofit has organized a winter coat drive and is collecting turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner giveaways. That coincides with donations being accepted for senior gift baskets and a holiday toy drive. Families in financial crisis can also begin signing up for a holiday sponsor later this month.

York said she expects the number of people who participate in this year’s slate of holiday programs will be more than double the usual rate.

York said organizers will make a number of changes this year to keep participants and volunteers socially distanced. That could mean restricting the number of families allowed at giveaways and scheduling more pick-up dates.

This month is a critical period. The program needs more food and gift donations, and volunteers are needed in abundance to handle the high demand. York encouraged schools and businesses to organize toy and food drives, but she said she understands that could be a challenge during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re having to be more creative, more flexible,” York said. “We’ll be especially challenged because many offices that normally do that for us are not working in person, so they’re not going to be able to do the toy drives. And then our biggest food drives in the North Fulton area was the schools this time of year. And they’re just going back.”

Coat drive Warm Coat Day has kicked off NFCC’s holiday assistance season for the past 13 years. Last year, about 1,900 new and gently worn coats, jackets, hats, scarves and gloves were distributed.

This month, those items can be donated through Oct. 31 at the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta YMCA, 3655 Preston Ridge Road.

NFCC has registered a wish list of items at Target. The charity will continue to accept donations Nov. 2-4 at the Old Thomasville Furniture store, 310 North Point Parkway Circle. The donations will be handed out to families in need the first week of November.

At first, we would talk about his son’s progress — the successes and the stumbles — and about this ominous monster that threatened to eat him alive. But after months and months, I began to hold back, worrying that my questions and my concern for his son were making the hurt and the pain worse for him. The amount of bad news always seemed to outweigh the good.

Milton upends rival Alpharetta in region opener

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Milton extended two significant streaks Friday night.

With their 35-20 win, the Eagles increased their number of consecutive region wins to 14 and their consecutive victories over rival Alpharetta to five.

It was the Region 5-7A opener for both squads.

The matchup was the first in-region meeting of the teams since 2011 with Alpharetta’s move to Class 7A this season.

The rivals traded blows through the first half, but a strong performance from Milton’s defense and plenty of offensive firepower allowed the Eagles to take control in the second half.

“That’s definitely a heck of a way to open up region play with a crosstown rival,” Milton head coach Adam Clack said. “With losing the summer and starting late, it still feels early in the season, even though we have a few games under our belt. We are still trying to catch our stride, but I felt like things came together for us tonight.”

Milton (4-1, 1-0) entered having surrendered just 8.8 points per contest, the lowest average in all of Class 7A. Though Alpharetta (1-3, 0-1) found paydirt three times in the first half, Clack said his team’s defensive performance was

impressive.

“We hadn’t been in that situation much, giving up scores, but if you look closer, some of it was big penalties, a heck of a throw and catch by [Alpharetta quarterback Ben Guthrie], and sometimes you can’t defend the perfect play,” Clack said.

Alpharetta struck on their first drive.

A late hit call on Milton and a thirddown conversion by Alpharetta set up a 2-yard touchdown rush from sophomore Jake Gil. Milton responded quickly though, building a 21-7 lead with three unanswered scores.

On the Eagles’ ensuing possession, Milton appeared to set up a screen pass to running back Jordan McDonald, but instead, quarterback Devin Farrell connected with a wide-open LT Overton, the top sophomore defensive prospect in the nation, for a touchdown. “[Overton] is so gifted of an athlete… and his football IQ is off the charts,” Clack said. “We wanted to run some multiple tight end sets, and he is a threat in the pass game.”

The Eagles took the lead for good early in the second quarter with the first of Jordan McDonald’s three touchdown runs. Clack said it was “huge” to have McDonald, who missed the McEachern game, back from injury.

Farrell recorded his second touchdown of the night on Milton’s next possession midway though the second. The junior hit tight end Jack Nickel with a 49-yard pass before avoiding pressure to rush the ball in from 18-yards out.

“He really gives the offense that explosive capability,” Clack said.

Milton gave up free real estate on Alpharetta’s ensuing drive with facemask and pass interference penalties.

Alpharetta took advantage, ultimately converting a fourth-and-3 to set up an 8-yard touchdown run from Guthrie.

The Raiders scored again before the half on a perfect pitch-and-catch from Guthrie to Matteo Carriere down the sideline. However, a botched PAT play kept Milton in the lead, 21-20.

Alpharetta’s two scores late in the first half gave them momentum coming out of the locker room, but Milton’s defense turned the tide when play resumed.

Milton cornerback Bryce Thornton intercepted Guthrie on Alpharetta’s opening possession of the second half, the first of two picks for the sophomore, to set up McDonald’s second rushing score of the game, pushing the margin to 28-20. “[The secondary] played well,” Clack said. “There were a lot of 50/50 and deeper balls. There was a lot of space

to cover and [Thornton] was always in the right spot. I talked to Bryce after the game about how proud I was of him. He got beat early, and the average person might let that get into their feelings a little bit, but he came out in the second half and played incredibly.”

Milton’s defense forced a threeand-out on the Raiders’ next drive, and Farrell again showed his rushing ability with two evasive rushes to set up McDonald’s third touchdown late in the third quarter.

Alpharetta had three more possession on the night, but two ended with a turnover on downs, and Thornton’s second pick in the final minute iced the game.

With Friday’s region and rivalry win, Clack is pleased with where his team stands at the midseason.

“The defense came out early and they have been really hot and have been super impressive,” he said. “They can be trouble for any offense. With the offense, things should start clicking by the time you get into region play, and I think we were at that point tonight. We’re ascending.”

Both teams continue region play Oct. 23 against Cherokee County teams. The Eagles return home to play Etowah, while Alpharetta will be on the road against Woodstock.

Roswell gets past Etowah to remain undefeated on year

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CLASS 7A Roswell 21, Etowah 14 Roswell played its 765th game in program history Friday night, and it was special. The Hornets not only posted a 21-14 win over Etowah to open Region 5-6A play, it was also the first time they ever faced a former head coach as the head coach of an opposing team. Matt Kemper, who led Roswell from 2017 to 2019, had to take the loss at the helm in Woodstock Friday.

Despite five turnovers, the Hornets managed to outlast Etowah.

Roswell broke the stalemate early in the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Robbie Roper to Marquis Willis. The Hornets had a goal-line stand to keep their lead following Willis’ score, but Etowah knotted the game with a 5-yard touchdown run.

The Hornets took a 14-7 lead into the half behind a fourth-and-goal touch-

down run from junior Ryan Stephens.

Roswell extended the margin to 21-7 with a touchdown on their opening possession of the second half, a seven-play, 72-yard drive capped off by a Ryan Hill rushing score.

Though the Hornets struggled with turnover throughout the night, sophomore cornerback Ethan Nation continued to be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. Nation had two picks in the fourth quarter for his sixth and seventh interceptions in five games.

Etowah did make it interesting with a touchdown in the final minute, but Roswell held on to secure the victory.

Roswell (5-0, 1-0) is set to take on another unbeaten, Cherokee (6-0, 1-0) in a battle of top-10 ranked teams Oct. 23.

CLASS 6A Cambridge 37, Centennial 0 Cambridge ended a three-game skid and earned its first Region 7-6A win Friday with a shutout, the program’s first since 2015, over Centennial.

Pandemic, recession create crisis for women’s wellbeing Mental, physical health under increased threat

By TIFFANY GRIFFITH newsroom@appenmediagroup.com NORTH ATLANTA, Ga. — Research on America’s first six months battling the coronavirus has doctors and mental health experts alarmed. It shows dramatic increases in domestic violence, substance abuse, depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts for women.

This perfect storm is a combination of social isolation, being confined to homes with abusers, taking on most family and domestic responsibilities, working from home, working in public and financial stress if unemployed or underemployed.

“There’s been a lot of extra pressure that women seem to be bearing the brunt of,” said Dr. Rebecca Gomez, a clinical health psychologist with Wellstar Medical Group.

Data shows women are reporting greater emotional distress related to the pandemic compared to their male counterparts, Gomez said.

An August Center for Disease Control and Prevention study involving nearly 2,800 women showed more than 41 percent suffered an adverse mental or behavioral health symptom. More than 12 percent started or increased substance abuse to cope with pandemic-related stress or emotions. Nearly 250 of those women seriously considered suicide in June.

Comparing September 2019 to September 2020, Gomez said Wellstar hospitals have seen a 26 percent increase in patients experiencing suicidal thoughts or attempts.

She said seniors are also dealing more with depression and loneliness.

Many in the older population are not comfortable going to the doctor on their own or using virtual apps, she said.

Yet, Henry and council members Mike Palermo and Marie Wilsey still pushed for adjustments to be incorporated into the system for new businesses.

Gomez offered her best advice for getting through the hardships of the coronavirus recession.

“First and foremost, please stay connected with your medical healthcare,” Gomez said, adding the importance of exercise. “Look at your routine. Chances are they’ve changed, but are you maintaining a consistent routine?”

Gomez said 30 minutes of moderate activity a day is equivalent to a low dose antidepressant. She advises women to watch their diet and remain social while physically distancing.

Journal reports many women live in areas with unreliable service, and those with access might have an abuser listening nearby.

Frontline numbers tell story Dr. Michael Lipscomb, a physician at Wellstar North Fulton Hospital, said the problem is apparent in his emergency room.

“There’s definitely an uptick in the number of substance abuse, depression, suicidal thoughts across most of our facilities,” Lipscomb said, speaking just of the emergency rooms alone.

Lipscomb said many Atlanta-area hospitals are so overwhelmed, patients are diverted to other medical facilities for psychiatric care. That is despite a 40 percent drop in routine and emergency room visits due to coronavirus fears.

“Our ability to take care of psychiatric patients is now stretched,” Lipscomb said.

Tammy von Nordheim, a mental health therapist at Growth and Wellness Therapy Center in Roswell, said she sees the coronavirus recession affecting women of different ages in different ways.

“I have the young group, ages 25 to 30, they are struggling more with isolation,” von Nordheim said. “They’re used to having girls’ night out. And the women ages 35 to 50, primarily they’re struggling with trying to find balance in work, family, and personal time.”

In terms of physical wellbeing during the pandemic, Johns Hopkins Medicine

reports a rise in murder-suicide, involving a male partner killing a female and then himself.

Authors at the New England Journal of Medicine have expressed concern that stay-at-home orders to prevent the spread of COVID-19, have trapped victims with their abusers. Their study shows many shelters and hotels remain closed or operate at limited capacity, providing fewer safe havens for women and children escaping abuse.

Internet and cellular service has become vital in maintaining communication during the pandemic. But the

“If you look at the number of COVID deaths, comparing White Americans to Black Americans, the graph is staggering,” Wellstar’s Lipscomb said. “Across all age groups, the death rates, are double for the Black population. That escalates when you reach the age of 75 or 80.”

If you need to be seen by a doctor, Lipscomb said, don’t fear the hospital, because the risk of catching the coronavirus is extremely low. The experts also stressed the importance of normalizing mental healthcare.

Racial unrest in 2020 adds another layer of tension, von Nordheim said.

“I have a section of women who are struggling to manage the different personalities they have to work with, whether it’s a cultural or racial situation,” she said. “As we know, COVID has brought out with it a lot of extra stress that has always been there, but it’s really found a way to rear its ugly head. So, they’re trying to find a level of respect for what they bring to the table.”

Doctors have called upon society and elected leaders to address the wellness of women who are struggling or in danger during the pandemic. They also urge women to be intentional about their self-care.

“The biggest thing I would say is take some time out for yourself. It’s totally 100 percent okay to say, ‘I need some me time and I am not going to be apologetic about it,’” von Nordheim said.

“Am I missing something Mr. Luckett, because I feel like we would be penalizing a new business,” the mayor asked.

“They’re going to base their taxes on what they think they’re going to make, but then their next-year taxes are going to be based on the actuals like everyone else.”

Henry said she wants the licensing process to address receipt estimates made by new businesses to hold them accountable for accuracy. She said new businesses would be credited for any overpayments.

Wilsey shared Henry’s concerns that

businesses that open mid year could be overtaxed based on their early anticipations. She called for “some kind of roll-up or accountability” and proposed a more uniform “administration fee” for first-year businesses instead. Luckett said that would be a violation of state law because the city would effectively be taxing new businesses differently than existing ones.

The councilwoman later pointed out that the city has a goal of promoting economic development with a posture of business friendliness.

“When we’re looking at what this

policy is, I think we need to look at it through the lens of attracting businesses,” Wilsey said. “Attracting that Maserati dealership or that technology company that’s going to employ 250 people. So I just don’t want to make it so complicated and such a burden that it detracts rather than meets the goals that we want it to.”

No action was taken on the matter.

The council is expected to vote on a resolution confirming a plan that addresses procedures for new businesses while simplifying renewals for existing ones.

Fulton Science Academy principal earns doctorate while guiding school expansion Administrator says degree will help him set course to promote achievement

But for Kenan Sener, complacency in his own educational leadership is not an option. While overseeing the multiple phases of Fulton Science Academy’s

Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Sener always had an interest in technology growing up. He was accepted into Bosphorus University to study computer programming. However, after experiencing a few internship opportunities in the corporate world, he quickly began to change gears within his career path.

“I had a passion for teaching and education, and accordingly, I accepted a computer teaching position in Nairobi, Kenya,” he said. “It was a significant change in my life to move from Istanbul to Nairobi at that young of an age.

school, continuing my education and also coaching and coordinating Kenya’s national team in the International Olympiad in Informatics.”

Upon visiting a number of countries around the world, he earned a scholarship in San Diego and moved to the United States to continue his education.

Sener loved teaching computers and robotics. He soon became involved with Fulton Science Academy’s administration during the school’s establishment in 2002.

“I was also helping the school administration on instructional technology issues, and that led to an offer to work in the administration,” Sener said. “I am truly proud of our community for creating a caring academic atmosphere for

our students to flourish. It never feels like a job for us.”

Originally a charter middle school, the academy transitioned into a private institution reopening as Fulton Science Academy Private School in 2012. The school built a 67,000 square foot facility where they focused on providing STEAM education to gifted and high-achievement students in Pre-K through eighth grade. Continuing to double their enrollment every year, the academy began offering classes for high school students in 2015.

The school currently serves 740 advanced students and earned its ranking as one of the best private schools in Georgia. Sener could not be more proud of their accomplishments in recent years.

“Education is a very rewarding field,” he said. “There are few careers where you can see your hard work and feel that you have made a difference.”

He said he is especially proud that students achieve academically and socially, adopting caring, empathetic, thoughtful, and conscientious attitudes toward others.

“It makes me very happy to think that they are equipped to create a much better world for all of us,” Senar said.

The 20-acre campus is continuing to change and grow as a number of expansions are underway. This summer, the school completed its second phase which included a high school hangout area, innovation lab, science and technology labs, art and music classes, and 35 additional classrooms. The academy is now in the final phase with the additions of an athletic field, art center with an auditorium, greenhouse, tennis courts and an outdoor basketball court.

In recent weeks, members of the faculty have discussed ways to better assist students who are struggling with virtual learning and the many changes

that go with it. In the hopes of forming stronger relationships with students and parents beyond the classroom, the school has created a virtual home visit program.

“It warmed my heart to see that they genuinely care to help each student in their class to the fullest extent possible,” Sener said.

Despite the difficult times brought on

by COVID-19, Sener said he is excited about the future of the school and his career. While acknowledging that academics and schooling will be different in the foreseeable future, he remains hopeful in the field and the skilled educators that inhabit it.

“I hope to contribute to educational reform initiatives positively,” he said.

“I foresee more focus on soft skills and interdisciplinary studies through these reforms. I commend all educators for their hard work and care for their students during this pandemic.”

Herbert August Severit

September 16, 1933 – September 29, 2020

Herbert Severit, 87, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2020. He was born and raised in Bremen, Germany. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gloria Severit, two children, Scott and Leslie, and three grandchildren, Caroline, Rachel, and Sarah. He was a member of the U.S Airforce, and became a U.S. citizen in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1962, he started working for IBM where he met his wife, Gloria.

In this time, he also attended college under the G.I. Bill. Upon retirement, Herb developed a love for wood carving, and spent every Thursday at East Cobb Senior Center with his wood carving group.

His love for travel brought him to all seven continents and all 50 states of the United States. Because of COVID-19, there will be no viewing, and he will be interred at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.

Richard said, “I recommend for your spiritual practice for the next four months that you impose a moratorium on exactly how much news you are subject to — hopefully not more than an hour a day of television, social media internet news, and/or political discussions. It will only tear you apart and pull you into the dualistic world of opinion and counter opinion, not Divine Truth, which is always found in a bigger place.”

Instead, he said, “I suggest that you use this time for some form of public service, volunteerism, mystical reading from the masters, prayer — or preferably, all of the above. The gift I received from my friend’s child’s recovery took me only halfway to where I need to take myself. I had nothing to do with his recovery or his redemption. The remaining half requires that I take action to help, to focus, to engage in the well-being of others around me and not drown in my own inward focus. I can do this. If I can, so can you.
